No Christmas in California: Management Company Orders Removal of All Christmas Decorations From Common Rooms at Senior Apartment Complex

Residents in a Newhall senior apartment complex are protesting an order from management to remove their beloved Christmas tree from the community room because, they were told, it's a religious symbol. On Tuesday, Tarzana-based JB Partners Group Inc. sent a memo to staff at The Willows senior apartment building demanding they take down Christmas trees and menorahs in communal areas. The company has owned The Willows for four years, but this is the first time it's given such a directive to staff. On Wednesday, two dozen residents in the 75-resident complex gathered in the lobby to place a neon green sign that read: "Please Save Our Tree." "We're all angry. We want that tree," said Fern Scheel, who has lived at the complex for nearly two years. "Where's our freedom? This is ridiculous."

It also predates the widespread worship of Sol Invictus, the pagan cult that supposedly it was trying to replace (given that pretty much every other date was sacred to some pagan god, it would be hard to have picked one that wasn't close to a pagan festival, so proximity isn't necessarily significant...)

SFGoth, that's the point. What reason does this private business have for demanding that all religious symbols of holiday celebration be removed? There's no basis for it save some silly "diversity" or "inclusion" clause in some handbook somewhere. If it's because of some requirement in their Medicare acceptance policy or some other federal or state money granted to them, then they should SAY SO.It's foolish and disruptive, and it completely ignores the will and desire of the people who live in the facility. They're a private business -- why would they do something that would make their customers so angry?

Don't try to claim that Christmas is some specifically Christian religious holiday that does not draw from any pagan influence at all. That's simply silly. Among other things, Christians didn't even celebrate Christmas until at least a Century after Jesus's death and ascension.

And what's with these school districts who are backing down from allowing their school choirs from performing a Christmas program for charity because of threats of law suits. That's going on in Hawaii, with the cries of separation of church and state.
I thought the Supremes had already settled that--that the "separation of church and state" is simply the prinicple that the state cannot impose a state religion.
I'm not religious but I'll gladly fight against the hateful people who are standing in the way of such things.

True, for instance I will not process an order in my sales business from Vietnam. Experience has shown that they are all fraudulent. Technically this is probably racism but I've never had to argue it, and don't make it public. And the ignored orders never complain for some reason.

Christmas is only one of eleven FEDERAL holidays listed in the US Code (above). So, by federal law, Christmas is not just a religious "tradition".

Yeah, we get that the management's ugly and cruel behavior was "legal," but a lot of ugly behavior is "legal." That's not the ONLY benchmark for how people should behave.
These folks pay their rent. They have been able to have a Christmas tree and menorahs all along -- now the other party to the contract wants to change the terms? THAT, I think, would give the old folks legal justification to withhold their rent: they didn't move into a holiday-hostile place, it was changed after the fact.
