| No Christmas in California: Management Company Orders Removal of All Christmas Decorations From Common Rooms at Senior Apartment ComplexAnd menorahs, too. We all have equal rights to be equally miserable. Residents in a Newhall senior apartment complex are protesting an order from management to remove their beloved Christmas tree from the community room because, they were told, it's a religious symbol. On Tuesday, Tarzana-based JB Partners Group Inc. sent a memo to staff at The Willows senior apartment building demanding they take down Christmas trees and menorahs in communal areas. The company has owned The Willows for four years, but this is the first time it's given such a directive to staff. On Wednesday, two dozen residents in the 75-resident complex gathered in the lobby to place a neon green sign that read: "Please Save Our Tree." "We're all angry. We want that tree," said Fern Scheel, who has lived at the complex for nearly two years. "Where's our freedom? This is ridiculous." Comments1

From Christmas Tree.com
Traditions: Christmas Trees and Ornaments The fir tree has a long association with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. But it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time. Posted by: Vic at December 06, 2012 12:32 PM (YdQQY) 99

Christamas is celebrated at Dec 25th because this was near the Winter solstice which was a pagan holiday and the Church wanted to stamp it out.
Posted by: Vic at December 06, 2012 12:29 PM (YdQQY)Except that apparently the December 25 celebration dates prior to AD 200, when Christians were a persecuted minority and trying to differentiate themselves from paganism, no coopt its symbolism, IIRC. It also predates the widespread worship of Sol Invictus, the pagan cult that supposedly it was trying to replace (given that pretty much every other date was sacred to some pagan god, it would be hard to have picked one that wasn't close to a pagan festival, so proximity isn't necessarily significant...) The issue is not whether or not the management company can do this; it's private property, so they can. The issue is that they felt the need to do it. There can be several reasons to do this: 1. They're bored. 2. They delight in pissing off helpless old people. 3. They think bad publicity is better than no publicity. 4. Their lawyers told them that if they receive state and/or federal dollars they might be liable if they allow a public expression of religious belief. None of the above are good and the fact that 4 is probably the answer is demoralizing and a sign of intolerance.

"St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree" What an a-hole. Seriously. Correction: He walked, unarmed, right into a bunch of armed tribesmen known for violence and rapine and cut down their sacred tree while they were in the middle of worship and then asked them what they were going to do about it. BTW, a lot of these early Irish and English missionary saints were born as members of a warrior aristocracy, and, oddly, tended to act a lot like Beowulf-with-a-crozier.... LOL! So it's gone from, "How is this an Obama issue?" to "This isa private company doing what it wants, nothing to do with the first amendment," to "Maybe they think it's a fire hazard" (despite this being their fourth year of ownership and only the first year they've made this demand, with no mention of health or safety hazards being the driving cause). What next, sweetie? Is it going to be, "Maybe the company president didn't get the Thomas the Tank Engine sheets he wanted from Santa when he was a little boy and he's hated Christmasever since. We should all respect and soothe his psychological trauma." Nobody is saying the company has no rights to do this, nor saying that there needs to be some kind of legal remedy (unlike libtards who legislate everything they can). The thing that angers us is the constant attack on every harmless, indeed entirely beneficial, aspect of traditional western custom and tradition. They are actively working to wipe out distinct western cultural elements. Yet the cultural contaminates introduced by non-westerners, most of which are harmful and degenerate, are not only tolerated but are actively embraced. We are being made unwelcome in our own land. Fuck that.

Paganism is gone? So my Wotanic friends don't exist? Paganism has never gone, and it never will. More specifically, the idea of a Christmas Tree (a nearly perfectly circular conifer) comes from... well, lots of places, but especially the Germanic Yule (yep: the Yule Log, too) which included a circular decoration (often a tree) to signify the circular nature of the seasons. Don't try to claim that Christmas is some specifically Christian religious holiday that does not draw from any pagan influence at all. That's simply silly. Similarly, if burning the flag is outlawed then suddenly all "freedom of expression" is jeopardized. You can't have it both ways, otherwise you become a fascist state. So take the good with the bad. Paganism is gone? So my Wotanic friends don't exist? Paganism has never gone, and it never will. Unless your Wotanic friends practice human sacrifice and believe that only those who die in battle go to Valhalla, than no. Neo-paganism, the paganism of today,is a mishmash of cherry-picked bits of mythology, post-modern philosophy, and historical speculation. Modern papanism is in no way a continuation of the pre-Christiaian religions of Europe, and, yes, the German-speaking peoples ceased practicing paganism as an actual religion over a thousand years ago, isolated superstitions notwithstanding. More specifically, the idea of a Christmas Tree (a nearly perfectly circular conifer) comes from... well, lots of places, but especially the Germanic Yule (yep: the Yule Log, too) which included a circular decoration (often a tree) to signify the circular nature of the seasons. I'm going to back up Grey Fox on the timing of Christmas issue. This notion of "Christians picked 12/25 to steal the season from the pagans" is an urban legend. Yes, it sounds nice and fits and is widely accepted among those with "just enough knowledge to be condescending assholes", the historical reality is that for the first hundred years after Jesus' birth, (1) the pagans were not out celebrating the season with any particular vigor, and (2) the big date for early Christians was Easter. It was only after Christians began widely celebrating Christmas that "winter solstice" picked up steam, just like Hannukah and Kwanzaa are increasingly popular, despite being relatively religiously insignificant (or "made up" in the case of Kwanzaa).
The 12/25 date may be wrong (just as the year is wrong), but that is a function of poor calendaring calculations by early Christians, not cynical "stamp out the pagans" nonsense. Posted by: wooga at December 06, 2012 01:38 PM (/aD1n) 285

I have seen scientists argue that it was much colder, and some saying it was more humid, but I do not know who is more accurate -- the "cold 1 AD" folks seem to be peddling a "Jesus was boogie boarding on a chunk of ice and it looked like he was walking on water" theory -- so I don't put stock in any particular theory there.

Seems pretty simple to fight back against this.
At meal times, throw your food all over the cafeteria. Every time you have to go to the bathroom, choose instead to pee/poop yourself and force the staff to clean you, even if you are fully able to use a toilet. Everyone push your nurse call button simultaneously, repeatedly, all day long. That seems to be how to get your way in today's world. Posted by: aaa at December 06, 2012 01:49 PM (JFsQc) 291

The climate would not shift that much. It would take a pole shift to do that and that would kill almost all the life on earth. Besides that, it was still Roman tax time even according to biblical accounts. Roman tax time was in the Spring. Posted by: Vic at December 06, 2012 01:51 PM (YdQQY) 292
This is just the tip, as they say. Wait til these fine, fine seniors need medical care in the new era of Obama.

Don't fuck with old people. Life without possibility of parole isn't really a big deal for us.

Christmas tree ... a religious symbol Yeah, from those tree-worshiping Germans. Boniface converted them to Christianity, and the Church, having done this previously and pleased with the results, usurped the old religion's festivals and symbols. Thus why we have Christmas trees, yule logs, holly and wreaths. Posted by: I R A Darth Aggie ® at December 06, 2012 02:18 PM (1hM1d) 296

286 ...It was only after Christians began widely celebrating Christmas that
"winter solstice" picked up steam, just like Hannukah and Kwanzaa are increasingly popular, despite being relatively religiously insignificant (or "made up" in the case of Kwanzaa)... ========= This. Posted by: edj at December 06, 2012 03:11 PM (+QKfp) 299
Screw their holiday spirit - they practically are spirits. Die already! The world belongs to the young!

I ascribe to the broken-window theory. So let's break all the windows and let management sort THAT one out.

Private retirement homes have the absolute right to do what they want on their property. Sure they do. But they have no rights to be shielded from the consequences of making their patients miserable.

Something to point out here.."Senior Apartment" usually is section 8, which means it is under HUD jurisdiction. This may have nothing to do with landlord's wishes, it may be a Federal Regulation....

Federal holidays are designated by Congress in Title V of the United States Code (5 U.S.C. § 6103. Christmas is only one of eleven FEDERAL holidays listed in the US Code (above). So, by federal law, Christmas is not just a religious "tradition". Posted by: porthuronpunk at December 06, 2012 04:45 PM (Jcs2b) 305

Put on an islam flag and korn in the manger and see how things go. I bet THAT would NOT be taken down because it has religious affiliations. I bet it would even be said that is the best navativity setting we have EVER seen.

Some atheist jackass exercised the HECKLER'S VETO, and the management caved. (OH, Atheeeeiiiisssts? whatever happened to "Live and Let Live?")
Yeah, we get that the management's ugly and cruel behavior was "legal," but a lot of ugly behavior is "legal." That's not the ONLY benchmark for how people should behave. These folks pay their rent. They have been able to have a Christmas tree and menorahs all along -- now the other party to the contract wants to change the terms? THAT, I think, would give the old folks legal justification to withhold their rent: they didn't move into a holiday-hostile place, it was changed after the fact. These heckler atheists, man. Some people could fuck up a wet dream. Posted by: beverly at December 07, 2012 01:45 AM (r+WHH) 309
I suggest that we replace it with a pentagram. We can have a decapitated rooster in a manger instead of Christ. And abortion debris should be the hay. Posted by: tboyle at December 07, 2012 02:36 AM (w7CNQ) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0524 seconds. |
