The House has a similar sales tax bill so this is a likely done deal. It really pisses me off. The Supremes ruled long ago that States could not charge sales tax on out of State merchants. But the SOBs in Washington, no matter which Party, all bow to lobbyists and contributor’s bribes and contrary to what Republicans say, they have no problem with taxes. 17 Cross-posted from the overnight thread.

I was looking for a Groucho Marx story last night, but I’ll be damned if I can find it. So I’ll tell it, but until I can find the reference, I’ll have to substitute fake names:

Groucho was throwing a party one evening when he ran into a writer friend (we’ll call him Vic). “I’m glad you’re here, Vic,” said Groucho. “I want you to do me a favor.” He pointed across the room to. . .oh, let’s say CharlieBrown’sDildo, a director who’d just been signed to a big picture after a few years without any work.

“You see CBD over there?” Groucho asked. “This is the first time he’s been able to enjoy himself in a while. I want you to go over there and show him some money.”

“Show him what?” asked a flabbergasted Vic.

“Money,” Groucho repeated calmly. “He’s been broke, you know, and hasn’t seen any money in a long time. If you pull a five or ten-spot out of your pocket and show it to him, I know he’d be very grateful.”

So Groucho left a befuddled Vic and slowly worked his way around the party, saying hello and dropping a wisecrack here and there until he got to CBD. “Good to see you, old man,” Groucho beamed, shaking his hand. “I’m glad I got to you in time. Do you see Vic over there?” he went on, nodding across the room. “I just wanted to warn you that he’s been a little goofy lately. He insists on showing his money to people and nobody knows why. So if he pulls a bill out of his wallet, just nod and say nice things, will you?”

“Sure, Groucho. Anything you say.”

Leaving CBD, Groucho then grabbed himself a drink and a couple of friends he’d let in on the joke, all of them barely containing their laughter as they watched the two men meet in the middle of the room, one holding out a five dollar bill to the other, who smiled and said it was a wonderful thing to see.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

39 Thoughts on the ONT link to conservative blogger poll for 2016 candidates (http://is.gd/IN7YpU)

It is far to early for us to be talking about potential candidates for 2016. Not only is everyone sick of this shit but there are two other major concerns. First, we have to get by 2014 and we need to work on that to keep the House and try to take the Senate. Second, and most importantly of all, anyone we start pushing now is, by definition, an establishment candidate who’s turn it is. I want to see some damn new blood.

And that’s it for today.

45 I just posted this in the now dead ONT. Let me know what you think:
*******************************

So I'm still looking why Romney lost the election, and I think I've hit on something. Let me know what you think, though.

In
general, Democrats win low turnout elections, and Republicans win high
turnout elections (in general). So it behooves Republicans to ensure a
high turnout election. So how do we do that.

The one thing that
neither McCain nor Romney would do was get into conflict with Obama.
Certainly they had areas of disagreement, but they wouldn't actually get
into conflict. Now, this is important because conflict is exciting.
People get involved in conflict; they root for one side or the other.

Take,
for example, American Idol. American Idol did better every year until
Simon Cowell left. Why? Because Simon Cowell was a dick. He was very
specifically a dick, because it caused conflict. With him gone, there is
no conflict, and the show is boring.

Or take American Wrestling
(or, as we called it, "wrastling."). There was a time when no one paid
attention to it. It wasn't entertaining at all. The some guy came along
and decided that his wrastling persona was going to be "the bad guy."
Suddenly, it wasn't two grown men in their underwear tussling in a
boxing ring, it was a fight between Good and Evil. To this day, the WWE
keeps that dynamic, and they do very well.

I think Republican
politicians, especially on the national stage, need to court a certain
kind of controversy, of conflict. Certain "well duh" rules apply here of
course (if you're ever having to explain that you think rape is bad,
you've already lost, for instance). But imagine if, during one of the
debates, Obama had said something about having to "raise revenue," and
Romney had returned with this rejoinder:

"Mr. President, I
completely reject your premise. We don't have a revenue problem, I'm not
particularly interested in seeing the US Government take in more money.
We have a spending problem, and that is what we should be attacking."

Now,
instead of his mealy mouthed "Well, I want to raise revenues, too!" we
have conflict. One side wants to "raise revenue," and the other wants to
"cut spending." Now we have conflict. Now we have controversy. Now we
have sides.

I saw one of Brubeck's last performances about a year ago at the Blue Note here in NYC. What a phenomenal artist, gentleman and performer. Even at 90 he was sharp and engaging.

And he loved America and freedom, likening jazz to democracy:

(from 2005 AP interview) "Jazz is about freedom within discipline. Usually a dictatorship like in Russia and Germany will prevent jazz from being played because it just seemed to represent freedom, democracy and the United States.

Many people don't understand how disciplined you have to be to play jazz....And that is really the idea of democracy - freedom within the Constitution or discipline. You don't just get out there and do anything you want."

RIP Dave Brubeck.

That could be due to lack of conflict on Romney's part but I don't know. I never saw a single ad on TV here issued by his campaign so I don't know how he ran it.

Interesting thoughts, but I would take it a step further.

The reason that the so-called moderate Republican candidates don't engage (aside from fear of being called racist and ridiculed by the MFM) is because they don't believe in their hearts in the very principles that should drive their engagement; individual liberty, private property, limited government as outlined in the Constitution and the free market. Romney's background should have made him a better candidate than McCain, Dole, Ford or Bush 41, but the only time he was a vocal advocate for limited government was when he responded to "you didn't build that."

At this point, it's going back to one's vomit, but it does illustrate the point that we must DEMAND a true conservative fighter/proponent and that the Republican Party under Boehner does not represent us.

''American voters favor the legalization of marijuana, 51 - 44 percent, with a substantial gender and age gap, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Voters today are divided 48 - 46 percent on the issue of same-sex marriage, reversing the 55 - 36 percent opposition to same-sex marriage in a July, 2008, survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. White Catholics support it 49 - 43 percent.

Climate change did not cause Superstorm Sandy, voters say 53 - 37 percent. ''

Social issues seems to indicate softening, while climate change kooks are losing the battle.

70 #56 I said this yesterday but I will repeat it. For 30 years we have heard about how Reagan won with "sunny optimism" and positive ads like "Morning in America." My own governor-elect (Pence) refused to run a negative ad and lost his impressive lead and fortunately squeaked through.

I think that this "positive" ad thing is because people didn't really understand why Reagan won. He won because he was a friendly TV celebrity and Carter was a sour incompetent.

The celebrity portion of Reagan's personna was why he won, not his campaign style. For 30 years we have been following that idea and it is completely wrong.

I don't blame Romney for following what EVERY GOP EXPERT has been saying for 30 years. But we had better wake up about the effectiveness of negative ads and quit counting on the good sense of the American people.

Trust me, my vast successful political experience tells me that conflict is NOT the way to run a campaign. Reasonable moderate voters are not interested in ideas, principles, or policies, they want candidates that will grow in office and reach across the aisle to do the people's work!

86 Morning.

You may recall back in October there was a huge explosion here in NW Louisiana. Turned out to be a company that was improperly storing explosives at Camp Minden.

Well, last week inspectors were back there, looked out a window and found a million pounds of explosive powder, sitting around in boxes outside.

Then when they started looking around, they determined that it was more like 6 million pounds of "M6 smokeless gunpowder".

A local town, Doyline, has been partially evacated for several days now while authorities try to move the boxes out of there.

I'll post a couple links separately.

100 Since Groucho was the subject of MPPPP's movie star story this morning do any of you remember a clip of Groucho and his family on a trip to Germany after WWII? Specifically of them at one of the concentration camps, dancing. His version of a big FU to the Nazis, as if to say, 'You tried, but you didn't get us all.'. IIRC, a link was posted here at the HQ some time back
Posted by: Retread at December 06, 2012 08:26 AM (zxitI)

Actually, Groucho danced on Hitler's grave. From an article in the Sarah Lawrence College Magazine:

The late comedian Groucho Marx, famous for his quick wit, performed some of his best work in 1958 on a pile of East Berlin rubble for an audience of five.

Among the five was Judith Dwan Hallet ’64, then 16 and the daughter of Robert Dwan, the long-time director of Groucho’s radio and TV shows. She and her father, along with Marx’s wife and 11-year-old daughter, had accompanied him on the tour of Europe. In Dornum, the German town where Marx’s mother had been born, the travelers discovered that the Nazis had obliterated all Jewish graves, and removed from the local church the old register of inhabitants from his parents’ generation. Marx hired a car with a chauffeur, and told the driver to take the group to Adolph Hitler’s grave in Berlin.

It was surprisingly easy to get there. The car slipped through a checkpoint into a devastated gray and brown city of people in solemn clothing. Marx told the chauffer to drive to the bunker where Hitler was said to have committed suicide, where he was supposedly still buried.

The rubble at the site was about 20 feet high. Wearing his characteristic beret but without the trademark cigar, Marx alone climbed the side of the debris. When he reached the top, he stood still for a moment. Then he launched himself, unsmiling, into a frenetic Charleston. The dance on Hitler’s grave lasted a minute or two.

The left has totally co-opted the language. It's what Arthur Lackoff and Alinsky taught, i.e. controlling and framing the debate on your own terms.

Not possible. Just heard Obama say dynamic scoring is bullshit. Only static models are realistic. If we made X in revenues by taxing amount Y at Z percent, we will obviously make X' by taxing Y at Z', and there is no chance Y will decrease as a function of policy aversion.

119 AllenG and Miss Marple,

Allen, you are correct. Obviously Obama has been playing like he's John Stewart, and with the Hollywood-ization of politics, it's only going to get worse. So putting up a guy who sounds like Mitt against a guy who sounds like he's a talk show host makes it tough.

On the other hand, act too much like their clown, and you turn off your base. So it's tricky. Can't go out there sounding like Mark Levin, can't go out there sounding like Bob Dole. Gotta find the sweet spot.

Miss M has it partly correct, but I believe there's an extra portion to Reagan that damn near every single politician and analyst continually fails to spot, even with my help, down here in comment-land. As Ace wrote recently, Reagan had a way of telling you uncomfortable things in a comfortable way (or something like that). More importantly, though is that Reagan had a knack for chopping through the loaded question crap from the press. SPECIFICALLY the loaded questions that bogged Santorum (to name one conspicuous example) down every single day he spoke to the media: God, Gays, Guns, Evolution, Global Warming. The gotcha questions.

Reagan had a way of answering the leftist hacks in short, tight messages that were difficult to raise an objection to. My favorite example was on abortion. Reagan gave some really great speeches on abortion, but those were well written to be solid arguments. But when interviewed, he always kept his answer short and sweet: "Until science catches up to the question of where does life begin, I always say, 'err on the side of life.'"

Pitch Perfect.

Not one dog in the race in 2012 ever bothered to study that answer.

No one ever bothered to analyze why it was so full of win.

Until candidates do that, they cannot break through the iron dome the media puts up around the leftist du jour.

133 From another article:

Authorities are slowly moving some of the 6 million pounds of explosives improperly stored at a munitions recycling facility because they feared a chain reaction blast could have spread through corridors packed with explosive materials, the sheriff of the threatened area said Tuesday.
...
Webster Parish Sheriff Gary Sexton said Tuesday that the buildings operated by Explo Systems Inc. are several hundred yards apart but connected by above-ground corridors wide enough for a fork lift to shuttle materials between them.
He said state police who discovered the storage problems found the corridors stuffed with explosives, including a propellant called M6 that is used in artillery shells.

I'm still shaking my head about how the explosion was in Oct. but "investigators" just found this stuff last week.

Oh, and the owners of the company are out of the country, but expected to return.

Sure they will.

From the town next door:

Sexton said a trio of burglars apparently thought they could take advantage of the evacuation and attempted to break into the home of an elderly couple just outside the city limits early Saturday.
When they tried to break into a rear window, the 77-year-old woman shot one with a .44-caliber handgun. Sexton said the injured suspect was hospitalized in critical condition and the other two suspects were arrested. He did not have their identities.
"She dropped the hammer on one of them. One is fighting for his life," said Sexton, 59, who is in his third term as sheriff.

150 J.J. and Hrothgar,

Pushing back on leftist language would be really nice to see.

But what I've been yammering about for years is that our rummies have got to stop sounding like their rummies when talking about an issue. Wehn we use the language of the left, we're pre-screwed in the debate.

The one that makes me want to grab folks by the necktie (yeah, I know the kids don't wear 'em anymore) and slap them with each word is: Stop Calling It An "immigration" Problem. Stop. It.

We do not have an immigration problem. We have an illegal alien problem, a porous border problem, and a law enforcement problem. NONE of which will ever get solved by screwing around with immigration law. Bear with me: Why? Because they never deal with any of those issues in immigration law.

Hell yes it would be nice if some crafty rascal on our side slipped an end to the anchor baby problem into page 90,310 of the next omnibus bill. That would be really great. But that doesn't fix the illegal alien problem. It just reduces it enough to allow politicians to keep it un-fixed.

And for the nit-pickers, sure, we need to actually change the immigration laws to reflect at least nineteenth century issues, if not all the way to the present. But fix that stuff later, after the bigger problem has been dealt with.

Yeah, I'm not sure what it's going to take to un-screw us. I'm all for testing politicians on their knowledge of American life and law, with the results being made public. I advocated that for a while.

But these days, I'm liking the idea of a Conservative Boot Camp for potential candidates, preferably with someone like Gunny Sargeant Ermey in charge. I'd like to see them doing pushups while getting yelled at to reinforce a few principles of freedom and crawling through mud while protecting a copy of the Constitution.

Vic, Amazon WANTS that bill. They figured out that they could charge their affiliated vendors for handling the sales tax calculations for them. It also creates a barrier to entry for competitors who might try to compete with them, as they probably don't have the resources to manage the ever changing database. Crony capitalism marches on, and now picks up Amazon in it's clutches.

I'm with 96. Require every candidate to pass an exam on the US Constitution. But I'd certainly require the candidates to also pass a math and book keeping course, proof positive that they KNOW how to balance a budget before they get elected.

Politicians including Hillary Clinton who overspend in campaigns and refuse to repay debts should be barred from government. Of course she isn't alone in that practice. The BILLIONS of dollars spent barraging voters with crap! Just to end up with the same old same old liars.

Given the internet's relative inexpensive format, as a voter I'd rather all political advertising simply be at the home page per candidate. If a voter wants the scoop, just go to the home page per candidate. The media? pfft. Get off the televisions and radios, screeching the same old same old "promise them anything, just get their votes" crapola commercials.

I hate perpetual campaigning. My $.02 ad? As an American citizen tax payer and registered voter, "I approve this message."

After I saw the results of that stupid poll I could already sense that Republican party-ism is going to trump restoration again this cycle.

We have some really great "values" conservatives. Perry, Rubio, Romney, etc, etc.

None of those guys gives a shit about restoration. (which is why Mitt lost.)

And I'll say it again clearly: Rubio is not a Restoration guy. He's not a Tea Party guy. He's a values conservative. A good guy, but like Mitt, he' not what we need right now. I wish to hell he was.

Reagan DID care about restoration, a lot. Those early speeches J.J. was referring to showed that clearly. He actually believed in what the founders were trying to do. Romney, like Bush 41, never seemed the least bit interested in that boring old "Constitutional" stuff.

I remember as an employer, after one of the many 'fixes' to immigration (you probably remember, better then me how many times they 'fixed' the problem over the decades) being required to have employees show proof of citizenship. It took maybe two minutes of secretaries time per employee. She was done in an hour.

I didn't complain, the employees didn't complain, life went on. I never want to hear about a business that thinks checking status would be tough. The only reason they might bitch is because they know they're breaking the law and want to continue.

Sure. I'm aware of that. But it absolutely will not be a winnable argument as long as our guys keep tripping over their own bootlaces calling it "immigration" issues. This country has always been open to immigrants and for many more years it should remain so. Somehow the racists on the left have managed to plaster the mask of "latino" over the word "immigrant" in people's minds.

We need to plaster the mask of "jihadist" and "lawbreaking scum" on the word "illegal alien." and shoe it back hard, with enough mental discipline to never let TEHM get away with calling it an immigration problem.

Shit hit the fan.

So really, at this point, who really cares what douchebags say about fools who hire them?

Rather, care about replacing the "leadership" bent on corruption.

Conservative? Conserving the right of elitists to twist and break rules they make for lesser mortals to suffer the "benefits" of obedience to their "betters". The Republican Party is NOT the party of fiscal conservatism, or the US Debt would not have doubled during the administrations of GWBush. And the Republican Leadership? At the emergence of the outraged conservative Americans during 2008 who rallied 'round the "Tea Party" 2010 elections to impact results, the Republican national leadership declared that the GOP would simply usurp the Tea Party. It isn't as if they didn't accomplish the knife in the back after the conservative voter "victory" that amounted to Republican treachery when George W. Bush was initially elected with what he called "political capital" to spend, and spend and spend.

A pox on both major parties' leadership, Republican and Democrat each according to their own mannerisms, enforcing authoritarianism while dissolving our Constitutional Rule of Law. Our US Government is every bit as corrupt today as any Union or criminal organization. Perhaps different mannerisms while conducting business, different phraseology, but the same methods regardless of decorum or lack of decorum with the same results in the end. Corruption. Loss of Liberty. Tyranny and terrorism.

114 I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ANY POLITICIAN TELL ME WHAT GREAT THINGS THEY WANT TO DO FOR ME!

Exactly! They can't do anything FOR us without doing something TO us.

** All at OUR tax funded expense.

208 Smart, charismatic VP pick gets cut off at the knees by GOP 'advisors'. Huh. That's never happened before...

Heh.

Then politicians can do a lot of great things for you, at zero expense, or at least they can try. You should demand that they concede all Whites the full legal and financial equality that elites do not need (because they are doing so well anyway) but that non-elite Whites do need, and that they are actively being deprived of every day, by enforcing anti-White laws and policies through highly expensive bureaucracies.

This is not too much to ask. This is not unthinkable. This is necessary. And this plus an end to mass immigration and forced integration and assimilation (by which I mean that the Whites are forced to integrate and assimilate, though the non-Whites enjoy cultural separatism and identity politics) has to happen, or else Whites have no future.

This is not a call for supremacy. This is a call for the minimum conditions of life: to be free, to be equal, and to have a future where your posterity will not be wiped away by government policies that are guaranteed to put an end to people like you.

How can this be "at your tax-funded expense" when all that's necessary is to pass and repeal the right laws and abolish malign bureaucracies that already exist at tax-funded expense?

How can it be too much to dream and demand, when non-Whites, when they were so much less powerful than Whites in historically White countries, already got all their legal disabilities removed? They have everything I ask for: full legal equality, full access to jobs, and a future, where they can foresee their posterity extending endlessly, the way America's founding fathers did. It must be possible.

210 I clicked a link at Ace of Spades HQ that said "First Stills of 'Smaug' From Third Hobbit Film" and I ended up being very disappointed. Smaug had only one head. The beast that was displayed had two! What the heck is Peter Jackson thinking?!
