Obama: I Won't Play That Game, And By Game I Mean "Some Degree of Financial Responsibility"

The GOP is threatening -- I hate even to use the word "threaten" -- to demand some kind of future fiscal sanity from Obama in exchange for a present increase in the debt limit.

Obama considers that unfair and racist. And also, a game.

Meanwhile, an analyst offers four different scenarios for raising the debt limit. Two involve breaking the Constitution. None of them involve spending less money and solving the country's solvency crisis.

A normally mild-mannered writer offered these thoughts:

One of the problems the GOP is that they have a negotiating partner who never seems to learn the right lessons.

His first term was full of failures, stumbles, mistakes, etc., but who has a remarkable ability to shift blame. Stimulus wasn't "shovel-ready"? Not his fault. Economy stinks? "Headwinds." Scott Brown wins in a warning shot against Obamacare, and he charges ahead anyway. His received a stunning rebuke in the midterms, but didn't change his approach. Debt ceiling debate? "Don't call my bluff, Eric."

Now he sees in his reelection absolute and total vindication of everything he's done as president. This is why I'm skeptical of Keith Hennessey's theory that Obama is more willing to deal than his public stance suggests - I think Obama's not nearly as afraid of going over the cliff as he ought to be.

One way or another, Obama will be in office for the next four years. So maybe what is needed most is a giant "teachable moment" for Obama - some mess so big and so vast, even he has to realize he screwed up.

Over the cliff? Higher tax rates for everybody? Double-dip recession? If the country is in even worse state by the end of 2013, perhaps Obama will realize he's presiding over five years of recession, a depression that will define his presidency, and he'll start being more conciliatory, and negotiating in good faith again?

Call it the Let It Burn program, Cool Hand Luke subroutine.

11 I don't think the Democrats and, hell most Republicans, actually view our current debt situation as any kind of existential crisis affecting the future of our country. It is just a game to them. It is all about destroying the Republicans. That the rest of the country will then burn is deemed racist fear mongering.

24 Part of the problem is that almost no one is going to actually talk about the actual motives behind peoples' actions.

Sometimes and to some extend this is because we're not mind-readers, but at some point that becomes an excuse.

Nothing Obama has said about what he wants is congruent with what he does. It's pretty clear he's lying about his motives. The same goes for a *lot* of other people in the fever swamp we know as DC.

And yet, to be taken seriously, you have to act as if the lies mean anything.

End result: horror, disaster, destruction.

Obama isn't going to "learn from his mistakes" because they're not mistakes (well, not all of them). He's simply motivated by a set of ideas than not only don't work, but that he's unwilling to openly admit having.

If you have no idea what those ideas are, then *of course* he looks like he's randomly staggering about in a fog. Because nothing he does works out the way he says he wants them to.

But that's not exactly the case if you accept that hes lying about his motives. In that case, his actions make a lot more sense (though since his ideology is broken, a lot of things *still* don't turn out the way he wants).

73 I've suggested a couple of simple monkeywrenching things the House GOP can do in response to the "fiscal cliff" crisis.

Here's a new one. Just go ahead and call Obama's bluff on Clintonomics.

Obama put Clinton up on stage at the Democratic convention as an exemplar of how great the economy can be with a Democrat in charge. Okay, let's go with that. Here's the proposal, in full:

-- A return to Clinton era tax rates, across the board, for everyone

-- A return to Clinton era SPENDING rates, indexed for population and inflation

What's Obama going to do? Claim that Clintonomics was a disaster and that he couldn't possibly sign on to such a plan? After he held up Clintonomics as a shining example just a few months ago?

Oh, by the way, for those of you who haven't done the math on exactly how much spending Barky would have to cut to get back to the average Clinton spending level per capita, suffice it to say that we're talking about meat-ax levels of cuts.

If nothing else, this would make it clear to any average Joes and Janes who are persuadable on the issue just how huge the gulf is between Obamanomics and Clintonomics.

The real leverage is around February when the debt ceiling is hit. There's the GOP's leverage, and they have to be just as willing to go over that cliff as the Dems are now. Let a Constitutional crisis flare up -- even better. The time for rational bargaining with these idiots is past.

99 No matter how bad it gets, it will be the GOP's and the Tea Party's fault. Obama will be able to read all about it in the NYT and the WP and watch it as it happens on NBC and CBS, and that will be good enough for him.

Forget about convincing the opposition politicos about anything. The only thing that will teach them anything is losing at the ballot box.

So the people to convince are the voting public. That involves speechifying about fundamentals and first principles by people who mean it and who the voting public don't mind listening to. They didn't want to listen to McCain or Romney, but those two (and GWB) didn't have much to say about fundamentals anyway and what they did say they didn't much mean.

Posted by: Ken at December 05, 2012 07:09 PM (3ar4L)

100 There is no point in trying to pressure Obama into doing anything because there is nothing to threaten him with outside of actual threats to his person. And violence isn't an option here.

There is no scenario that doesn't work out well in Obama's eyes.

America collapses and Obama gets to put all his favorite lunatics in charge of rebuilding while remaining President for life. Obama will regarded as unto a god by leftists forever after.

Things get better in spite of Obama but he still gets to claim victory and validation of his policies along with all of his followers.

Thing muddle along about the same and Obama and his ilk gets to spend the rest of his life talking about how much better thing would have been if not for those insane Republicans. Pretty much as Bill Clinton does now.

There is no point in trying to negotiate with a pathological liar. The first audience he mastered lying to was himself, so no matter what happens he'll remain convinced it was far better an outcome with him in charge than otherwise.

No, what needs to happen is punishment of the fools who put him in power. Those are the ones who can change future elections if they learn there are real consequences or simply have their numbers diminished when they can no longer parasitize those who keep the civilization working.

124 I oscillate on this "teachable moment" business. I have look-on-the-bright-side moments where I think, OK, give him what he wants and let everyone see, all doubt removed, what comes of it.

Here's the problem. Liberals are unteachable. (I'm not saying conservatives are teachable, necessarily - separate issue.)

Look at gun control. We point to the cities with draconian gun law and huge gun crime rates. They respond that it's because of nearby jurisdictions with minimal gun control.

Taxes: They always refer to the cost of the "Bush tax cuts." We say revenues went up. They reply that they would have gone up even more (static analysis) if we hadn't cut taxes. Note that tax cuts and a robust defense are the only thing the left ever asks if we can afford. (They ask rhetorically. The answer is no.)

We tell them, don't raise that tax because it will hurt the economy. OK. Our president was asked, What if you knew an increase in the luxury tax rate would actually result in lower revenue, as it has time and time again? He answered, as we all know, I would have to consider it anyway out of fairness.

We say: That's completely insane. 81% of voters polled say, Wow, that guy cares more about the issues that affect little ole me than the out of touch rich guy who gives millions to charity and volunteers many hours per week.

We look at California, Illinois and Detroit and say, This is where unchecked liberal governance leads. They look and say, Nothing wrong that more resources wouldn't fix - but those selfish Republicans won't let us ask the rich to pay a little bit more.

Teachable moment? I'm sorry. We're into alternate versions of reality at this point, and after you go over the cliff, even after impact, the left says it was government austerity and those selfish rich people that were the problem.

Maybe one of our trolls can tell me - is that really my fair share? Or should I expect that you will ask me to cough up a little more so that we can pay huge pensions to folks a year older than me who already are retired with full pay, or "invest" money in more Solyndras? Just so you can properly analyze what is fair, you should know I donate to and do work for charities I believe in, including my local school. My husband works full time (80 + hours week) and employs others. Maybe it would be easier to just tell me how much money you think we should be allowed to have. After all, at a certain point, a person has made enough money! But keep in mind, we support ourselves, 2 kids in college, a disabled relative, and aged mother. Posted by: Mirror-Universe Mitt Romney at December 05, 2012 07:16 PM (GceFv)

128 I'm thinking we're not giving enough credit to John Boehner. He's an old-school politico, a wheeler-dealer who's been around for years and years. His whole job consists of reading people, taking the measure of allies and opponents. He recently stripped many Tea Party-backed GOP members of congress of their committee assignments, risking enormous backlash from the base. His motive? He's showing the White House his power and taking the Tea Party out of the equation. Whatever course the GOP House takes in the fiscal talkscan't be blamed on the undue influence of Tea Party 'extremists'. He's also put forwardmoderate, compromising proposals, variations of the Simpson-Bowles Commission proposals, all now rejected.

I think Boehner's going to walk away. The President isn't completelyrational, frankly. As others have pointed out, Obama's a hollow shell, an empty suit (or chair), a man without a core, a narcissist, a rigid ideologue, and he's determined to take us over the cliff, thinking it's win-win: the Republicans get blamed for economic disaster and the President can then exploit the crisis to put forward even more radical proposals and programsin the guise of FDR-like 'experimentation'. However, Boehner sees what we see--what anyone can see without ideological blinders: a second recession far worse than 2008, along with the civil unrest and foreign policy uncertainties that go with it. Whether or not the MSM can pin all the blame on one segment of the legislative branch remains to be seen, but I don't think even they can cover up the magnitude of that failure, or completely obscure whose failure it really is. We'll see, I guess.

The whole point of LIB is to be on the outside and part of the side that builds the replacement.

One thing that a lot of people can't get through their heads is that we're already over the cliff. There is no way to deal with eliminate the insurmountable debt without telling a lot for people to go screw themselves.

And those people aren't going to be the Chinese. They stopped buying our debt a while back and have plenty of problems of their own. They may collapse before we have a chance to screw them over.

The welfare checks and transfers stop going out in July. Imagine what August is like.

Or everybody on welfare gets a check for a million dollars, just as the price of a loaf of bread hits $10,000.

It's the same effect. No money or worthless money. Rioting ensues in the urban centers. Then things get interesting.

It's worse than that. Republicans who work inside the government are surrounded, every day, in ways no lobbyist could dare to dream, by people who depend entirely on government spending. They have to fight that *and* all the Dems and every other leftist to get *anything* done.

You can't convince pedestrian thinkers who know that a 1% decrease in budget X means their kid won't go to the "right" college that all this insane spending is going to kill the whole economy.

They're surrounded every day by a million people afraid that any cut means their own bellies go empty. We talk about culture wars, the very culture of DC is not only alien to the rest of us, it's dependent on us, and dependency breeds contempt.

We're greedy because we won't give them everything we have to maintain the *only* region in the country that's growing like wildfire.

183 O/T: rd brewer: just want you to know those glass frogs link on sidebar gives me the heebie-jeebies. If I saw one of those I would react like I do to all reptiles: scream and run. I have literally shot vertical about three feet, with my legs running in air like a cartoon, when walking and a snake was enjoying heat of pavement. Husband said "nonpoisonous" after catching up with me and prior to me giving him a face plant to warm pavement as I disagreed: they are all poisonous vipers, like the political party in charge.

True story: We have little green tree frogs here in the wilds of Floriduh. Tiny little critters with suction-cups on their little feets. When my boys were young and watching TV after naps in our first house, I opened door to get mail (just outside of door). A green tree-frog leaped out of mailbox and landed on my supermodel bosom. I screamed like a banshee and scraped it off with the mail. I mean, I was loud. My young sons came running, thinking OJ had arrived (this was shortly after he'd taken care of his wife). Not one of my elderly and possibly deaf neighbors noticed. Very comforting.

The other thing these frogs do is somehow get into toilets in Floriduh through pipes on the roof, unless there is a screen over them. This is also a true story: when working in the emergency dept an elderly woman came in complaining of chest pain. When asked what she was doing when the pain started she stated a frog bit her hemorrhoid.

I cannot express how much I long to move back out West, land of the free of tree frogs and lizards in the alpine meadows. I will take my chances with other critters.

The only difference is that the people in 1770s America weren't lulled into a coma by luxuries and responded sooner than later. This time around it takes a collapse to get the public's attention. So be it.

The machine will just keep trundling along if not destroyed entirely. Mere damage is absorbed and soon forgotten, until it finally becomes so great it can no longer be ignored. But that is accompanied by catastrophic events.

But most important of all, the opposition wants to destroy the machine too, and be the ones to build what replaces it.

Either way, the machine is doomed. You can either stay aboard and share its fate or get off and be part of a future of your choosing as opposed to the one the left wants to impose.

"It" won't burn quickly and be ready for a reset in a matter of days, or weeks, or months. I don't know if we can even prevent "it" from burning, and I know it is exhausting trying to convince others to do the right thing, but giving up means giving up in the long run. There is no quick reset by giving up.

267 Back in 2008, right at the peak of the McCain/Palin, Obama/Biden presidential election, I wrote a scathing opinion to the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman about Sarah Palin (titled “Caribou Barbie”), and five years later, I would like to recant my opinion and tell the people of the Mat-Su Valley just how wrong I was at the time.

The Frontiersman published the opinion and it drew a lot of comments, mostly negative, and here we are almost five years later, and I want to pass on what I have learned.

Let me elaborate. Regardless of the politics involved and what you may think now, Sarah Palin did one thing that we shouldn’t forget. Put aside all other actions, failures, controversy and animosity for just a second about Palin and consider this: she warned us about Barack Obama.

She stood up and said clearly, openly and without reservation just exactly what Obama would do and how he would do it. She said that he had socialistic — if not Marxist — views, that wealth would be taken away and redistributed and that he would create a new economic dependent class. Not to mention a power grab in the justice department and what appears to be complete control over all government functions, regardless of opposing dissent.

And here we are in Obama’s second term, and who could argue now that Sarah didn’t have it right all along? Not only was Sarah dead-on the mark, it is shocking to see just how far along this radical agenda has evolved.

Yes it's once of several quasi constitutional things the executive can do in a debt ceiling showdown.

Or we could just balance the fucking budget. Obamas 1 trillion stimulus has been made permanent year over year. If we reverted to the fucking 2008 levels, finished pulling out of AfPak, and a few other small things, we'd have a balanced budget FFS.

Instead, the GOP has permitted 2 years of continuing resolutions. Fml.

EC, I wish I could believe that. The lesson learned will be "Bush's fault." Hate to be cliche here, but there are two scenes in 1984 that will likely describe our burnt future. One is where Winston tries to get people think about the pre-burning past, and they know nothing about it. The second is the craptastic cartoon propaganda put forth by the government still blaming the capitalists in the tall hats.

Letting it burn won't cause people to suddenly understand economics, but rather cause them to look for the quickest and easiest excuse possible that doesn't land blame on them. "Blame Bush."

We can't stop the burning. The fire was lit back in the FDR days and the left has been throwing on fuel ever since. Most people have been too trusting or disbelieving of their motives to take action, even when they openly declared their intents and methods ala Cloward-Piven.

We are in a situation familiar to any experienced firefighter. At what point is it still worth entering the burning building in hopes of saving lives and some of the structure or remain out side and concentrate on containment, even encouraging the isolated fire to burn itself out faster to end the threat to surrounding structures.

If the left is determined to go down in flames, I say give it to them fast and hard, and in as much isolation as can be arranged.

Amazing how so many still don't understand Obama, or the unique circumstances of his power which place him beyond "learning lessons", beyond the realm of ordinary political consequence or cause and effect.
In a manner of speaking, he is a King, almost a supernatural one. Nothing he does produces pain or problem or political repercussion for himself. He has the most extraordinary assurance of invulnerability and unaccountability in the history of political rule -- the Media.
He was able to do everything listed above and force the country to experience the resultant pain of those decisions, and yet he won re-election. Why, in his mind, would he ever "learn a lesson" or believe he had to?
And it's not exactly that he doesn't care about the fiscal cliff -- the greater concern is the destruction of the GOP. Going off the cliff might very well enable his objective -- total control of the three branches in 2014. Otherwise,he will continue to use unilateral executive power (EOs, regulations, recess appointments, etc.) to transform society. And in this pursuit, he knows he is safe both from scrutiny or consequence (any kind that matters anyway).

354 Obama isn't really the problem (hear me out). The real problem is the number of cult members who worship the guy. Make no mistake, it is a cult, and they outnumber us. Don't waste time thinking that the courts will be your refuge, because Obama appoints the judges. This is the way our system fails. Read the Federalist Papers. Read Plato. This is the way societies like ours collapse into totalitarianism.

At this point, it's not a matter of "letting" it burn. It's a matter of acknowledging the reality that it's already burning, and it's time to get out. The fire is too large to fight from inside the house.

But history shows that freedom is often best helped by those who flee totalitarian societies. The principles that made America great once will work wherever they are applied.

Just bits of it. A friend of mine went through that. Fire started in the garage and took out the kitchen too before it was extinguished. So he set up a small refrigerator and microwave in the guest bedroom while the burnt areas were being restored.

I had another friend in a less livable home than that for almost two years. An old Hollywood bungalow built in the 1920s for habitation by starlets and/or mistresses. When he got it cheap it didn't have working plumbing or power to most of the place. He joined a gym nearby and took his showers there. Slowly but surely he got the place in shape for a fraction of what it would have cost if it had been renovated before going on the market.

Neither of these situations were optimal. But they beat the alternatives at the time.

Chances are we lose a lot of expensive real estate in urban areas. But we also lose a lot of welfare dependents in the mayhem as well.

Stuff is going to break. Expect it. You have seat belts in your car because you cannot stop other people from being bad drivers or might find yourself suddenly impaired. You buy insurance against disasters striking your person and property in hopes it won't be used. If you know for sure such an event is approaching, plan accordingly. That doesn't mean building a bunker with a five year supply of food. Most of us have neither the money or the means. But awareness alone can make a big difference when SHTF.

“Last week [Treasury] Secretary [Timothy] Geithner brought up a proposal that was so unserious,” McConnell said on the floor, “I would like to see if my Democratic friends would like to support it.”

McConnell suggested that the Senate vote on what he called the president’s “ridiculous” plan as an amendment to the Russian trade bill that is being considered.
Reid, however, objected to McConnell’s suggestion, saying the Russian trade bill, H.R. 6156, is about job creation, not political stunts from Republicans.

400 I know there are some southerners here, so I understand they might not like the analogy, but it's like when Lincoln was trying to find a General to run his eastern army. He had a bunch of preening wimps who were more interested in having a pretty army than they were fighting and killing the enemy.

So when Lincoln would practically beg them to use their soldiers to fight and pursue and try to outflank and fight and shoot and kill and battle and fight and kill and...

It drove him to the point of madness. What other reason would there be for having an army?????

So that's where we are. Sending congresscritters to Washington, and they are more interested in trying to look pretty. Not a one of them seems to want to fight.

Posted by: BurtTC at December 05, 2012 09:07 PM (BeSEI)

401 No matter what happens, it will not be Obama's fault. A depression, collapse of the dollar, unemployment at 15%, whatever. It will be someone else's fault, and the media will go along with it. O has never taken responsibility for anything in his political career. I don't see why he would start after nuking the US economy. "Oh yeah, my bad." I don't see it happening. Somehow it will be greedy bankers, intransigent Republicans, racism, or some other of the million excuses we've heard the past four years.
Posted by: Conservative in Chicago

This is a safe but ultimately dangerous assumption. It assumes that the GOP and conservatives in general continue with biz as usual. If the GOP doesn't re-build their whole brand, it will be accurate for the foreseeable future.

However, if conservatives are able to interrupt the low-flying shit-eaters that comprise the GOP leadership, we have to change the way we are perceived.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at December 05, 2012 09:07 PM (08zV/)

402
Some may recall the catastrophic debacle that was the 2010 lame-duck session.

The GOP had just won one of the most sweeping and deep electoral victories in US history. Clearly due to one of the most important and powerful genuine grass-roots political tides in US history.

So armed with this raw political power, the GOP folded (without getting too Capitol Hill geeky, it was even worse than it appeared, as the House actually had an extremely rare Senate GOP commitment to block all business until budget matters were resolved, and instead of hanging tough and making a deal on Dec. 29, the House folded and "voila!" tons of awful shit got passed, such as DADT, nuke treaty, etc.)

The origins of that particular GOP disaster are easy to see: they're not too bright, in a tactical political and certainly substantive sense, and they're cowards and generally speaking very very small people in terms of character. Nothing has changed. Not sure excactly what they'll do, but it will be the worst thing for the country, and for them.

Alternative? Easy. Begin the scandalously over-due process of aggressive public education by calling out all the absurdities of recent budgetary chaos - which means "making news" with vituperation against the president and his idiot co-religionists, and by aggressively challenging every single element of false frameworks embodied in questions from the media. An ideal press conference would end up having about 3 questions, 10 angry exchanges, and several long, detailed, and epithet-strewn lectures on economic and fiscal reality, and recent history.

Either do this - on ALL major topics - without pause, without the least bit of concern for false decorum and the vapors among the airhead media types - or admit you're only inside the Beltway for the money and short-term ego gratification.

No guarantee this method will work. But it's pretty clear, after this ridiculous election, that the country is literally over the edge - in terms of being a rational, informed, serious polity. No exaggeration to assert that emergency measures are called for. And quibbling about the details of the latest irresponsible kick-the-grenade farce achieves nothing, substantively or politically.

Wide shot of President Obama and a very cute four-year-old girl.

Obama turns to the face the girl, smiles, and pukes two half-digested burritos on to her head.

He then says, "Oh, sorry, let me fix that" and whips out Mr. Happy and wash the barf off the girl with a powerful wizz of THC-saturated urine.

A big part of the problem is we have a game of Political Musical Chairs wth Kill the Messenger option active. The last man standing has to tell the truth and then get the blame.

The truth is the government could seize the entire assets of the 100 wealthiest Americans and it wouldn't cover the current rate of spending for a year. And you can only pull that stunt once. At some point a LOT of people get told they they're off the federal payroll and/or the dole. Things will get very ugly, especially in the densest urban centers.

Everybody in high office knows this cannot go on forever or is utterly delusional. The former mostly hope it waits until after their time for SHTF. As we're seeing now, those who want the truth out are being told to surrender their toys and go sit in the corner.

"Over the cliff? Higher tax rates for everybody? Double-dip recession? If the country is in even worse state by the end of 2013, perhaps Obama will realize he's presiding over five years of recession, a depression that will define his presidency, and he'll start being more conciliatory, and negotiating in good faith again?"

Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected THREE times in such conditions. I'm guessing he found a way to shift blame, too. He also gave away lots and lots of FREE SHIT. We don't remember it because we weren't there, but I guarantee you he did the same shit Obama is doing now.
Obama won't learn this lesson because he has been rewarded with the blamestorming. He'll simply rely on the media to blame everyone else just like they've always done before.
It's worked well so far, so why not continue. If we go over the cliff, you don't think it will be the Republicans who take all of the blame? The only way they don't is by giving up to his demands, and even then I'm not sure they won't take the blame - like this:
If the Republicans had done what I said immediately after the election, things wouldn't have spiraled downhill, but they waited, and now we face a depression (he'll call it a depression because he can blame it on Republicans).
Fact is, the only way he is going to be forced totake responsibilityis when the whole thing crashes down and the bullets start flying.
I hate these liberals with the heat of a million billion suns for the destruction they are doing to what was once the light of the world.
I don't feel sorry for the people that have leeched the system and voted for this - I'm going to enjoy watching them get what they deserve.

Hope for the best, but at least think about ways to prepare for the worst, and do some of it. This problem will not get better on its own, nor will it get better just because you think someone will save you, or you think that it can't happen here, or you think that nothing really bad could ever actually happen to you.

History is full of nations that have collapsed. Not only can it happen here, but it has happened here. There is only a very brief window to get out before it gets worse.

Look, if it does get better, you can always come back. Let's face it, you're not actually doing anything to "help the cause" here anyways. Nothing you couldn't be doing from somewhere else.

476 476 I've been saying for a long time that this country doesn't survive with a lying, treasonous press like we have. That's why Obama doesn't get called to account for anything. Because of them.

As noted in last night's ONT, gas was at 60 cents a gallon in Los Angeles on the weekend Star Wars opened. Yet the economy was doing horribly at the time and inflation was getting very scary. It took a major rejection of the then lunatic leftist administration to turn things around.

But it only takes a few decades to forget every lesson learned.

I don't know why anyone ever thought Bradley Manning wasn't working out[
Marine Corps Master Sgt. Craig] Blenis referred to a letter Manning had signed “Breanna Manning,” an alias he had used on occasion. The defense revealed at a hearing last year that Manning had written to a supervisor in Baghdad before his arrest, saying he suffered from gender-identity disorder. He included a picture of himself dressed as a woman and talked about how it was affecting his ability to do his job and think clearly.

bet his supervisors were afraid to get rid of him and pull his clearance long before he was arrested because they would be accused of persecuting him

We'll let Jim DeMint lead us. or we could elect a conservative but we do know Senator DeMint.

Absolutely correct. There are a relative handful of fucks- the news anchors for the various networks and the editors of a few newspapers - that set the agenda for the national "conversation". If they don't think it's important IT DOESN'T GET FUCKING DISCUSSED and for all intents and purposes it never happened. Kind of like the tree falling in the forest and nobody hearing it. They apply this to anything that might be favorable to Republicans or conservatives.
On the other hand, anything favorable to Democrats and the Left is pounded into the national consciousness through the simple technique of repetition. Every single fucking night, until the message sinks home and the masses repeat it like the puppets they are.

And that's why we've lost the country. That and the fact that our education system has eliminated critical thinking from the curriculum, leaving us with a critical mass of citizens who are spoon fed their daily propaganda and never think to question one iota of it.

The house should not pass one spedning bill.
or they can out Obama Obama.
The house can pass the "Obama tax the rich bill". Everyone who make sover $3 million a year gets taxed at 100% rate for all income above $3 million. Sports stars, rappers, hollywood types will love Obama if this is passed. But Reid will never bring it to a vote. Republicans can say "at some point we think you have made enough money" and the dems refuse to tax the rich.
When Obama mentions global warming the house should pass the "Obama antiglobal warming bill " calling for $3 a gallon tax on gasoline.
When Obama talks about education the House should pass the :"Obama education bill" where everyone is granted a free education paid for by savings from doing away all pensions for congressinal members.

532 Truman, Happy Days went off the air when she was four years old and had been unwatchable for a few years before that. By the time she was aware of it it was just another old 70s sitcom in perpetual reruns on the lesser channels.

I was born two years before Star Trek started and I'm sure it was viewed by my older siblings throughout its run but I personally wasn't much aware of it until it was in out of production and in syndication. AFAIK, the only shows I really remember from the 60s were those that were rerun a lot in the 70s.

Anything that happens before the age of around five can be pretty vague when looking back as an adult.

The DINKs (dual income, no kids) couple are all hip and post-ironic when they somehow manage to conceive a new life. A miracle occurs, and she doesn't abort. Her parents want to have her committed. Gurman is set to be arraigned tomorrow in Mineola.
“The Walking Dead” fan apparently believes a secret government experiment might go haywire and trigger the undead’s birth across the land.
“He said some kind of government testing went wrong and this would be the outcome,” Ray said.

564 Truman, I think I have a story to beat yours. A fellow officer and I were out to lunch about four years ago, and the restaurant speakers started playing "Land of Confusion". We started talking about how we both liked the song and the waitress, who couldn't have been more than 18, obviously has no idea what song it is. We're both shocked and explain the song and the music video with Ronald Reagan, and she replies, "Who's Ronald Reagan?"

566 Cut the military by 50%.

There is a hope that maybe the neocons would finally realize we must defend ourselves and not police the world.

2 birds with 1 stone.

Plus, the sooner we cut the whole military the sooner the lefties can't blame the spending on the military. Then you get into real cutting.

I really think you don't get it man.

This is all theoretical talk anyway. You can worry yourself over Afghanistan if you please, you should be worried about the US. Shit is gonna burn. There aren't going to be any cuts, except maybe military. And it won't be up to you. Ultimately the military will be gone because the whole thing is gone.

We must trust now in the Canadians to keep us safe. Which they probably will. Safe, so that we can probably slaughter each other. When the Republic of Texas is nuking the People's Republic of California, nobody gonna give two shits about Taiwan anymore, anyway. They're on their own, and the sooner they realize it, the better chance they have of making it. Don't sell them no superhero bullshit, ain't no one gonna save them either.

575 444 Crude oil has fallen to $88/bbl. Some analysts see sub $60 coming with US production increasing every year.

It will be hard to fuck up the economy with low energy prices.
Posted by: Herbert Hymenhopper at December 05, 2012 09:28 PM (vjq6E) Are they comparing the same type of crude as they did during Bush's years, when they purposely reported the price of the more expensive grades? If oil is lower than it was during 2005, why is gasoline still so high? Obama, told us that low oil prices are a result of low demand, which is a result of a bad economy. So if oil is falling in price, then it must be due to low demand, which means a bad economy.Which, in this case...it does.

-----

And the head of this website backed it, being a 'smart' politics guy, or something.
The most leverage/best opportunitythey were going to get, possibly ever, considering demographic changes, and they gave it up. Today, of course, they have next to zero leverage, and Boehner's doing everything possible to provide himself political cover on the right for another capitulation, to include internal purges.
And, as you indicated, those guys are still in charge.

Sorry to be a bore on chemical weapons, but they don't change anything. Very impractical ever since maneuver warfare emerged in the mid-20th century. Sure, "effective" (depending on lots of things) against static civilian targets. But not much more than well-delivered high-explosive and fragmentation fire in an urban situation. Oh, right, the "terror" element. Yep, I'm sure the people of Hama in 1980 were downright relieved to know it was only HE killing 20,000 of them (ditto for Iraqis in Karballah and Basra in 1991).

And sorry to be a bore on the whole Iraq WMD thing, but by raising the (non-trivial) assertion that Iraqi WMD were sent to Syria in 2003, you're stipulating the fundamental distortion of even the WMD portion of war rationale, not to mention ignoring the overall rationale. There was unaccounted for - still is - Iraqi chemical WMD physically inventoried by UNSCOM that was cited as part of the 2003 war rationale. VX. Syria don't got VX. Ain't nobody got VX except the US and Russia. Iraq's ability to produce VX was one of the key facts that made taking out the Ba'athist regime by far the prudent move in 2003. Preventing the Venn diagrams of WMD from state sponsors/alliesand AQ from crossingand creating that little slice of gray color was the key rationale for Iraq. And if Iraq could produce VX once (and pursue 5 paths to uranium enrichment, vs. the Manhattan Project's 2), plus all the other very impressive shit they pulled off pre-1991, they could do it again.

And, as the Kay/Duelfer report documents, they had every intention of doing so, and had postured themselves for resumption/breakout once sanctions were formally lifted, as opposed to mostly de facto ineffective.

Sarin won't change a thing about the Syrian end-game. And Syria had a chem weapons program before/apart from Iraq (in fact Syria's CW was a motivator for Iraq's program - though logically speaking you can't really separate the motivations, and there were more than enough w/out Syria).

Kind of a pattern. Ninety percent of what even "conservatives" seem to believe about many foreign policy problems is factually off - but it doesn't change the substance of the policy choices, and doesn't change the fact that the current administration and its admirers are utterly clueless about dealing with the world.

To respond to chemjeff - yes of course you are correct, the lame-duck House was of course Dem-controlled. However, the particulars of the politicaland legislative situation left the GOP in both Houses with tremendous leverage (as confirmed by the outcome - WH meekly submitted and extended Bush tax rates, thereby setting some new sort of record for nearly-simultaneous reversal/holding two positions just after the campaign had ended).

My point is they had, at that juncture, huge leverage (debt ceiling), and even the bizarre spectacle of a Senate GOP usings ITS leverage to block all business until the debt ceiling/tax rates/CR thinggy was resolved. Thanks to the timing, the House GOP should have quadrupled down on their position and not backed off a bit until Dec. 28, then have two days of 24-hour "talks", and agree to the deal they did at the last minute. Same tax/budget outcome, minus all the toxic shit that was passed in a leisurely fashion thanks to the GOP's clueless, near-instant cooperation.

I recall, wistfully, that the incompetence of the GOP was so horrific, and its consequences so clear, that even Hugh Hewitt was, for a few days, serious and apoplectic about the obvious, rather than mostly a shill for whatever the GOP leadership's lame priority was that day.

581 Last year during the debt ceiling brouhaha, Obama agreed to some deficit reductions. He also took an estimate of $800 billion savings from Iraq/Afghan winddown and incorporated into the numbers of the day. Today, he's back with these same previously agreed to items, tabling them up again and wanting to count them yet again as deficit reductions. So apparently all those prior promises were just that. Promises. Obama has a way of forgetting promises the minute he makes them (right, Bart Supack?). So what does that tell you? There is no point negotiating with this guy. No point. He does not bargain in good faith. He deceives. His word means nothing. The House should simply do its Constitutional duty. Allocate spending, pass a budget, forward that up to the Senate, and be done with it. "This is what we can do, work with it." Then the Senate and the White House can decide if they want any discretionary spending at all. Unless the House deigns it, they have nothing.

I've suggested a couple of simple monkeywrenching things the House GOP can do in response to the "fiscal cliff" crisis.

Here's a new one. Just go ahead and call Obama's bluff on Clintonomics.

Obama
put Clinton up on stage at the Democratic convention as an exemplar of
how great the economy can be with a Democrat in charge. Okay, let's go
with that. Here's the proposal, in full:

-- A return to Clinton era tax rates, across the board, for everyone

-- A return to Clinton era SPENDING rates, indexed for population and inflation

What's
Obama going to do? Claim that Clintonomics was a disaster and that he
couldn't possibly sign on to such a plan? After he held up Clintonomics
as a shining example just a few months ago?

Oh, by the way, for
those of you who haven't done the math on exactly how much spending
Barky would have to cut to get back to the average Clinton spending
level per capita, suffice it to say that we're talking about meat-ax
levels of cuts.

If nothing else, this would make it clear to any
average Joes and Janes who are persuadable on the issue just how huge
the gulf is between Obamanomics and Clintonomics.

Keep in mind that they aren't talking about automatic increases in spending (budget act of 1974), which are about 7% per year.
They're arguingabout how much to cut from spending above and beyond the automatic 7% increase in spending.

590 A lot of people don't get that Obama is a Bolshevik. He is a hardcore Marxist-Leninist. A professor at Occidental (also a Marxist at least then) who knew Obama, socialized with Obama, said that at the time Obama was clearly a Marxist-Leninist. He regularly spoke of "when the revolution comes".

The progressives think of FDR's 4 term depression as a magnificent period. Lots got done, FDR got reelected.

Obama wishes to wreak the country domestically and internationally.

Everyone keeps thinking that there is some secret good guy inside of him, NO THERE ISN'T. Despite the loser Romney's and the loser McCains constant refrain that Obama is a nice guy he isn't.

He is a revolutionary.

591 16 FDR was President from March 1933 till April 1945, so he didn't preside over the depression for 16 years.

The depression ended in the early 1940's, FDR presided over it for about 10 years.

D's want $$$ for individual welfare while R's want $$$ for everyone's welfare. Big vs. small Fed gov't. in a nutshell.
