Teachers Unions, Who Are The Super-Educated People Entrusted With Teaching Our Children, Offer a Nuanced and Highly Intellectual Take on the Financial Crisis

Oh, sure, teachers are la creme de la creme. Obviously so. Obviously these rocket scientists could be drawing enormous salaries in any number of prestigious brain-work fields, such as furniture repossession and department store greeting.

Anyone want to argue this organization isn't explicitly communist? There was old claim, offered by class-conscious communists, that the petit bourgeoisie, the lower middle-class, were the most zealous defenders of the Unjust Capitalist Class System because, having just a bit of the benefits of the Class System, they were the most highly invested in preserving it.

Let me adapt that line of thinking and suggest that the most marginal government workers -- whose who could not possibly succeed in any demanding field, and in fact are only kept in their own jobs by union measures which make firings more costly than they're worth -- are the New Vanguard of Socialism.

Let me posit that while Ashely Judd may have a faux intellectual preference for socialism, it's the people whose next meals depend on an expanding and richly-funded government who are viscerally pro-government.

And I mean "viscerally" as "in their guts." The government keeps their bellies full. This is not just an ideological preference for them.

As I've noted before, the union's shock troops, those most committed to the union, are precisely those who know their jobs depend only on the union requiring governments to keep marginal-to-incompetent workers on the payrolls.

Better teachers may be pro-union, but they also know they could get jobs, and keep jobs, without the union. Also, being more on the ball, they believe they could actually change careers, if need be.

But the shock troops of the union? No, those are the malignant incompetents who are unemployable without a powerful organization demanding employers overlook their incompetence.

There's a difference between a political belief and a survival belief.

By the way, Ed Asner, who narrates this, is an out-and-proud communist and also a 9/11 Truther.

This is from the California Federation of Teachers. Quick, let's give them more power.

Thanks to @benk84.

1 For those who understand, no explanation is needed.
For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

David R, PHD
Professor of Economics, University of Georgia

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for a beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.00.
The sixth would pay $3.00.
The seventh would pay $7.00.
The eighth would pay $12.00
The ninth would pay $18.00.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.00.

So that’s what they decided to do. The men drank in the bar everyday
and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner
threw them a curve.
“Since you are all such good customers,” he
said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.00.
Drinks for the ten men now cost just $80.00.”

The
group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.

But what about the other six men, the paying customers? How could they
divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get their fair share?
They realized that $ 20.00 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth
man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner
suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly
the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should
pay.

And so:
The fifth man like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of 12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid 14 instead of 18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before! And the first four
continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men
began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10
back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!” “Wait a
minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything
at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men then surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine
sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the
bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough
money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And
that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax
system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most
benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being
wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might
start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

If you want to Let It Burn in California, the CA Teachers Association is a Santa Ana wind, dry brush, a can of gasoline and a carton of matches

Prop. 98, aka the"Financial Armageddon Amendment" to the CA state constitution put on the ballot by the teachers' unions, requires - requires - that 39+% of the state's budget must be spent on K-12 education (roughly $35 bn last year, and CA was 49th in test results).

Thanks, teachers' unions!

I would like to respectfully disagree. Detroit didn't kill itself; it had a shitload of help from the autoworkers unions. Then you've got the NLRB telling Boeing they can't build a facility in a right-to-work state, and that's not to benefit public unions.

116 My Dad was an English and History teacher for over 30 years, from the time he got out of the Air Force in in 1970 to 2003. So I have some familiarity with teachers.

I'm also friends on Facebook with a couple of chicks I know from high school who are also teachers. These stupid chicks can't go a day without at least three posts (mostly image macros, nothing requiring actual thought to produce) about how teachers are soooo much better than everyone and how teaching is sooo much more difficult than any other job and how anyone who defames a teacher is a stupid tea-bagger and on and on.

Someone mentioned to one of them, "Well, you do get summers off, so that's kind of a perk," and you would think that a bomb dropped.
"We don't get summers off! We work on lesson plans!"

I thought, "Unless you spend 8 hours a day, five days a week working on lesson plans don't tell me you don't get summer off." I mentioned this to my Dad and he said, "They do realize they can re-use lesson plans, right? Grammar doesn't change that much over a year."

I also recall, back in the 70's when teachers didn't get paid in the summer, my Dad mowing lawns to make ends meet, so I have just about had enough of this "Teachers are a downtrodden oppressed class of holy people meant only to be worshipped!"

That is true, but most of them STILL support the union over the best interests of the students. I have a sister in law who is a unionized teacher. She is an excellent teacher. She knows that there are substandard teachers. She knows that there are school districts that are a complete loss and a complete waste of taxpayer money. And yet she supports the union that supports the worthless teachers.

She is angry at the republican Michigan governor who is taking over school districts that have been failing for decades, because he is throwing out union contracts. She has to know that the union stands in the way of real reform in these districts, but she still supports the union AGAINST the governor.

These teachers are against what the governor is doing, but there isn't a white teacher in the union that would send their own children or grandchildren to these districts. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE BUT THEMSELVES. It is that simple.

Well, yes. When anyone talks about raising "revenue" they really mean raising tax rates. That does not make my statement false, it makes them false for misleading with their own statements.

We don't have a revenue problem. The US Treasury took in around $2,500,000,000,000.00 last year. We do have a spending problem (it's slated to spend ~$3.8tn this year).

As for having a "tax problem," I mostly agree, but there's not much we can do about it, other than not making it worse.

If we're going to have an income tax, it will be a progressive income tax. Why? Because it gains votes, and a flat tax would not. If we're going to have a progressive income tax, current tax rates are not *completely* (just mostly) insane. Lower would be better, obviously, but you're not going to change the fundamentals there.

I think Obama secretly doesn't want higher taxes on the rich. Once he gets them he won't have it as an excuse. If taxes stay low on the evil rich, no matter what happens in the next 4 years he'll be like "well if we only taxed the rich more this problem wouldn't have happened, not my fault"

I use the example of engineers. There are 4 in my family. None belong to a union. The ones who are extra ambitious or just smarter get more promotions and pay raises. They get put in charge of projects.

My niece was hired by a tech company that will bring in a whole herd of newly degreed engineers for interviewing around August. They hire a mess of them all at once. They start out at the same salary, but they do NOT end up all making the same salary.

The ones who have leadership or who handle the learning curve better get put in charge of areas and are given more responsibility. These are the ones who get called in the middle of the night if there is a problem. This is how it should work in education.

The lazy teachers should not be making the same salary as the teacher who is in the classroom 2 extra hours after school. Or the teacher who is tutoring failing students on her planning time.

There are 2 automatic raises every year regardless of performance or competence. 1 raise is the step raise that they get for the fact that they taught another year. The second is whatever percentage increase is negotiated by the union.

I'd suggest starting with prayer. Divine guidance helps. After you're done doing that, talk things over with like-minded friends in the real world, people whose faces and names you know. Most importantly, refrain from writing specific and very self-incriminating things in public, as you've beendoing. We know, for example, that the Obama Administration keeps an enemies list. Try not to figure too prominently on it. Take it from there. If you're feeling alone and discouraged, reach out (privately). My own email address is accessible on the website link on my AoS username. I use my real name wherever I post, andI'm not averse to contacts from people who share my political and philosophical beliefs.

211 For those of you who are parents, please answer this question:

Why don't you hold these teachers more accountable? By that, I mean going into the classroom, at least one day a month and see for yourself what they're teaching. If enough parents participated in this, you'd have a parent in the classroom every school day. So if, say, they were teaching about the evils of capitalism or the glories of Marxism, you could call them out on it. Write the local paper. Attend school board meetings. Speak up and let council members know that your vote depends on their support for your ideas.

Bitching about this stuff on ace's website might make you feel better, but it's not going to fix the problem. Your kids are still being corrupted. The only way to solve it with a grassroots effort of hands on participation.
