Oh, My: Amsterdam Proposes "Scum Villages" At Outskirts of City For Criminal/Antisocial Persons

This sounds kind of creepy, because it is. Or at least it seems to be. The "scum villages" would not be a matter of voluntary choice; you'd be shipped there, involuntarily, after an official order. So it would be coercive.

This is the problem with socialism. Here's what Amsterdam wants: They want their city inhabited by upstanding, pay-your-own way sort of people so that the city can be prosperous and a major tourist draw and also so everyone can make (and keep) more money. (Yes, I said this twice.)

But they have socialist laws (I assume-- and I'm quite sure I'm right) which block the natural market mechanism for this sort of thing. To wit, as a city gets more prosperous and more desirable to live in, property values and rents should naturally rise, thus making it very difficult for anyone making less than, say, a lower middle-class salary to live there. But they have laws on the books to prevent that sort of natural property value escalation, because they don't like the un-socialist elitism by exclusivity that creates.

And yet they still want to drive out the non-prosperous.

This is always the weird and creepy thing about socialism: If you've got this desire, then why not simply end subsidies for low-income residents and stop building projects in the city? No, they can't admit that; they want to keep those measures on the books. But they'll correct the problems with those anti-liberty laws by creating even more anti-liberty laws, these new laws not even being restricted to the realm of economics, but taking that full step towards physically seizing citizens and physically moving them against their will to a new State Created Ghetto.

It's bizarre. The problems of anti-freedom laws are never corrected by more actual freedom, but only by truly Orwellian new anti-freedom laws.

So, here we go: forcible evacuation to camps, I mean villages, for scum.

The “scum villages,” as critics have called them, would lie in isolated areas and provide only basic services to their unwilling residents. According to details of the plan reported by Der Spiegel and the BBC, residents will live in “container homes,” under the watchful eye of social workers or police. The residents themselves might not make very good company. According to the BBC, they’ll include families that engage in repeated, small-scale harassment, like bullying gay neighbors or intimidating police witnesses.

89 I live in very expensive and oh-so-PC Fairfax County, and the libs running the government are always going on about affordable housing, and how any new development must include x percent of "moderate" income housing. Two points: first, they assume that doing so is free. They never ask about foregone tax revenue, nor higher crime rates (when they say moderate, they, of course, also mean low income), nor lower school performance. Second, when pressed as to why some developer should be forced to give up the profit from the higher end units for which the area is suited, they'll mumble something about fairness, and how people who work in the county should be able to live in the county. When I point out that I live in the county and work in DC, they suddenly remember other obligations.

Bottom line: you have no right to live anywhere other than where your income allows you to live.

It's not a matter of if people get thrown into camps. It's just a matter of which side ends up doing the throwing.
All for the good of the nation, of course.
You'll do anything for the good of the nation, won't you citizen? The government is here to help, after all. You're a good patriot, aren't you? You should have no problem with going to the camps, yourself, all for your own good and the good of the nation.
You're not headed to the camps, you say? Well, then, you'll have no problem with helping your neighbors get on the buses and trains, and get them on their way to where they'll recieve the help that they so desperately need.
It's only reasonable, after all.

Funny that they are now deciding that perhaps that wasn't such a good idea.

Even funnier that they aren't willing to admit that perhaps "we" were right all along - maybe having laws on the books that punish people who, yannow, break the law, isn't such a bad thing, after all. And maybe enforcing those law is a necessary evil, to keep law-abiding citizens safe.

But after what succeeding measures? If you've been labeled an Undesirable is your vote still counted? Has your freedom of speech been subverted?

Under a system in which you can be forcibly relocated, your other freedoms can be each in detail excepted and minimized. There is nothing to stop the political class from making any 'preference cascade' irrelevant to the country's political landscape.

Less freedom does not automatically create the impetus for greater freedom. Sometime it only creates less and less freedom.

The mid-70s, actually. Several states (including mine, CA - yay!) passed laws restricting involuntary institutionalization. Ultimately one of them made it to SCOTUS, which saddled us with the current standard (only those who present an imminent danger to themselves or others can be dropped into the loony bin against their will).

Upshot: states had to empty out mental institutions, and at the same time, by curious coinky-dink, there was a massive upsurge in the "homeless."

I wasn't shocked that plenty of the whores were Mexican transvestites. Why not?

The AIDS activists said that despite all the Dutch government's pious yapping about progressive social ideals and enlightened pragmatism, the whore-stops were utterly unregulated, and the immigrant whores were spreading untold diseases.

Having lived in five socialist nations, I'd one more aspect to Ace's observations on the weirdness and creepiness of socialism: Every single government official enforcing socialist laws only pays lip service to socialism, and most citizens of socialist nations hate living under those laws but insist to outsiders that their system is superior.

The most brutal cops in the western world are in European socialist nations. The French Action Service of the National Police fielded death squads when fighting the Secret Army Organization in the early sixties. When I lived in Norway, we were terrified of the cops. At the station they beat you on the kidneys with telephone books so it wouldn't leave marks.

Ever see how Danish cops clear the streets of peaceful protestors? The real fun begins at 2:53.

I saw and experienced the what socialism does to the people it's supposedly designed to help. When I confront my liberal friends with this, they are dumbfounded. See, most of them would never dare live among the dregs of society. They'd rather tsk-tsk my cold hearted capitalist ways and soothe the nagging and constant echo of their liberal guilt with another misguided and destructive social program that never quite seems to have the desired outcome. (Funny how giving a junkie a clean needle causes them to want to shoot up some more.) At the end of the day, liberals are selfish and uncaring. It's not about helping the needy, addicted or oppressed, it's about squashing guilt and, ultimately, feeling superior. Both to the poor unfortunate poor and the evil unenlightened capitalist.

If the people they define as scum actually own their own homes, then it smells like another excuse to confiscate property and relocate people "for the public good", which the US government has practiced on my family roughly every other generation for the past 200 years. 264 Isn't the real problem that leftists don't want to do what they must, which is lock up criminals?

In 1999 I saw a guy filming upskirt videos on little girls in Santa Monica, using a camera in a backpack that he held under their butts. I followed him into a store and saw him putting the backpack under the doors of the changing rooms.

I went outside and flagged down a cop, and the guy was detained until they could get a court order to search his backpack. He was arrested, charged, and pleaded to a lesser charge. I didn't have to testify against him.

A month ago I was informed by the Los Angeles District Attorney that the guy has now been found guilty of forcible rape of a minor, and I'm going to be subpoenaed to testify on his past convictions at the sentencing hearing as they go for a life sentence.

The Assistant DA told me that this guy was consistently allowed to plead down for the past 13 years as his crimes steadily escalated, and now he's going up the river for life, but he's left a trail of destroyed children behind him.

California does whatever it can to "rehabilitate" criminals and give them chance after chance, at the cost of public safety.

In other words, leftists are indifferent to the greater good. It's all about patting yourself on the back for not being Texas.

So don't picture these as places where the 'underclass' will be shuffled off to, but people like Gert Wilders and his free-thinking ilk. One of my theories is that the Constitution and the Republic worked (for a while) because people were inured to a very tough living environment, didn't expect much of anything from the government (and were really more used to the government taking their stuff away), and there were immense land resources to the west (so you could just move on down the road and get away from pesky neighbors and government).

None of this is true today. Very few people can subsist independently of a salary today, and virtually no one can avoid the embrace of the ever-present government and its schemes to confiscate whatever you produce, have produced, or might produce in the future.

My great-grandfather was able to have a self sufficient farm that supported many people to one degree or another. I am lucky to have an IRA (until it gets confiscated for the "general welfare")!

I'm sorry, but these seem like a great idea, for a socialist country, that is.

There are innumerable stories of shitty neighbors making life difficult for everyone around, and because of the housing laws, they cannot evict problem residents.

Hell, this is a problem in our country. Bad neighbors are nuisances. We can't get rid of them or control them in any realistic fashion here, and given our legal structure, probably shouldn't, except through civil nuisance law.

In fact, we have places like this right now for the most incorrigible. They are called trailer parks. Problem is, not everyojne in the park is a miscreant.

However, if they are going to be a recognized socialist nation, I fail to see how this is the path to Dachau. They're not targeting any but the "anti-social."

As water follows the lowest lying path, Socialism is the easiest route to unchecked power.

You wrangle your constituencies by declaring them victims of 'others'. To the 'others' you say, "Join us or be targeted." You can silo a variety of groups in this way. All willing to hand you greater levels of power by preying on humans' natural desire for short-term gain and an envious and vengeful sense of 'justice.'

Posted by: tasker at December 05, 2012 02:49 PM (r2PLg)

327 I would hope that this "solution" (not yet a final one) from the Dutch highlights the point that anytime any group of people becomes targeted by any other group as being "less than human" or who don't have "skin in the game" or are in some other way can be singled out for vilification, derision, insults and generally called animals by the targeting group, only results in more and more dehumanizing treatment.

On this blog and in this thread, I've seen folks use the same logic concerning those who for whatever reason (whether deserved or not) have taken advantage of State Programs to assist them during a time of reduced income as being less than human and thus deserving and actually demanding that they be treated as less than human.

That type of thinking leads to ghettos (real ones), rehabilitation camps, reeducation camps and then to labor camps and finally to being gassed. It's not that far a step from thinking someone is worthless to thinking someone is a burden to thinking that that burden should be removed for everyone's sake.

Sure, but it's far more likely that the first identifiable "group" in the Netherlands would be the muzzies, like in France.

But in any event, at this point, I fail to see how enforcing some type of stigma or punishment on people who simply won't live peacefully with others is the second coming of Auschwitz.

There is nothing whatsoever to indicate that these scum villages will be "targeting" any particular group. 348 But in any event, at this point, I fail to see how enforcing some type

It's simple. We have a place for people who refuse to live peacefully with others. It's called prison. But that is a drastic step, and requires that one break laws as duly constituted by a (hopefully) representative government. What we're talking about here is prison without the name for vague offenses, and that is a very important distinction.

It is also very different from a place for people on the dole. That is voluntary. This is not. I have no problem with putting Section 8 housing in whatever area has the least negative impact on others. Don't like it? Don't take it. But we're talking about involuntary incarceration here. Again, we have laws and prisons for that.

Posted by: pep at December 05, 2012 03:05 PM (6TB1Z)

Yeah, yeah, when the Netherlands passes laws defining Jews as a nuisance, I'll get worried. Otherwise, it's a reasonable response to these self-entitled, low-class, rude asshole neighbors.

I'll admit my elitism, but I cannot abide a rude neighbor.

And I'm sure you will all be very welcoming of the Section 8 renters moving in down the block from you.

Posted by: imp at December 05, 2012 03:06 PM (UaxA0)

350 "If you've got this desire, then why not simply end subsidies for low-income residents and stop building projects in the city?"

Why punish all poor for the bad behavior of a minority? Since the gubbmint is paying the rent, they get to decide where the freeloaders live. If you have a history of bad behavior, and you want gubbmint housing, you'll live in the outskirts where they assign you, or else don't take the gubbmint freebies.

I have no problem with putting Section 8 housing in whatever area has the least negative impact on others.

Living on your street has no negative impacts to the Section 8 renters.

These are not "prisons" since I see no restrictions on ingress or egress. They are places out of the way for those on the dole who cannot live with others.

No one is being moved involuntarily, either, except to the extent they want to stay on the dole.

Thus constituted, I fail to see the problem.

if it's set in stone that only the abusers of taxpayer
funded government-dole are to be removed from tax-funded housing/bennies
and sent to CLUs, that's one thing.

I see no indication to the contrary, and all the fookin Euro-conventions that protect coddle the muzzies seem to make it pretty much "set in stone." You can tell me how likely that these will become access-restricted prison and death camps in the foreseeable future.

Can it be abused? Sure, if you're taking government housing. But if that's the case, get a job.

357 Amsterdam has always been a scum hole badly in need of the 1 Second Urban Renewal Plan (BOOM).

One summer in the 80's when I was serving in the USAF in WGERa friend of mine and I loaded our bicycles on a rack on top of my car and went on a 2 week tour of Denmark, The Netherlands and Belgium. We went to Amsterdam to look at the museums (I'm a big fan of Dutch Painters) and we camped on the outskirts of town and rode our bikes into town. We parked them in front of the train stationsecuring them with2 heavy duty stranded cables with top of the line Master locks, way above and beyond the typical locks that euro types used. When we returned a few hours later our bikes were gone. Looking at the remnents of the cables and locks it was obvious they tried to cut the locks and failed utterly. They then went to work on the cables and if you've ever tried to cut one of these you know it is no simple or quick task. I estimate it took them at least 10-15 minutes to cut their way through... In front of the main train station...while probably dozens if not hundreds of people saw them do it...with a cop station ~100 feet away. We filed a police report but the cop yawned, threw it in a large cardboard box where I'm certain it stayed until the box went to the dump. The city is/was hopeless.

We got ours back the next day, though. We were eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe when we heard some lady with a heavy Brooklyn accent yell "My Poise! My Poise!" My friend who was a runner jumped up and started chasing the guy down whith me jogging up behind. He tackled the guy and in the process of retrieving the lady's purse the perpetrator somehow manged to break his nose, arm and sustain several severe contusions and lacerations. Totally by accident! I swear! When a cop finally showed up he laughed at the guy's condition but told us he didn't need a statement from us because they didn't bother to apprehend or prosecute purse snatchers anymore.

This was in 1983 and I seriously doubt things have gotten any better. And things are getting this way in CA. Time to get ready to go full Mad Max.

A family from Czech live here...get some govt assistance for paying the rent, have two kids that get rather boisterous in the garten. one neighbour's called police twice to complain about the noise. most people on the street now avoid the czechs because they've been determined to be undesirable members of the pretty-much geriatric street. how long until this family is removed?
this isn't going to apply just to one particular class of people...folks may want to try real hard to believe that, but it just ain't

First they came for the A$$ Holes, but I'm a nice guy.
Then they came for the Republicans, but I'm a Democrat.
Then they came for the pot smokers... Wait a minute! They are coming after Pot Smokers. Answer: You ever talked to any Duchmen not from Amsterdamn?

361 "they’ll include families that engage in repeated, small-scale
harassment, like bullying gay neighbors or intimidating police
witnesses."

Come on people, can't you read? These "scum villages" are really "Muslim fundamentalist holding camps." For "intimidating police
witnesses" read "intimidating people who want to testify against rapes."

These aren't "socialism camps" they're "tolerance camps."

The great thing about concentrating the undesirables in one place is that it makes the next phase so much easier.\

363 'It's bizarre'
Just a more extreme example of how anti-freedom laws always beget more anti-freedom laws. It goes on all the time but it will soon spiral out of control. The nihilist left vs. the religious right. Both are out for absolute power, both want to destroy any remnant of freedom. But only one can win this battle. There will only be one cannibal allowed to remain at the pot.

364 Hasn't this been done already? Voluntarily? Sounds just like the Occupy encampments to me.

367 I would be in favor of this if they simply made it a requirement that to receive government money, you would have to live in a scum village. No forcible extractions, just no money unless you lived there.

371 I suggest the old French solution, of a scum-country.

If you are going to exile undesirables, find some malaria-ridden pesthole for, them.

373 "This is the problem with socialism. Here's what Amsterdam wants: They
want their city inhabited by upstanding, pay-your-own way sort of people
so that the city can be prosperous and a major tourist draw and also so
everyone can make (and keep) more money. (Yes, I said this twice.)"
-
That's not really the problem. The problem is not people without enough money to pay their own way. Old age pensioners living quiet as mice but not paying their way would not cause this reaction. The problem is disruptive, aggressive and dangerous people.

374 There's a Heinlein short story along these lines - "Coventry" - where the malcontents are banished to a walled territory to isolate them from their civilized neighbors.
One would expect anarchy but Heinlein allowed a primitive libertarian government to arise and establish some level of police power, at least from my memory of reading it 50 years ago.

375 There is a worse solution than this, and that is continuing mass immigration and forced integration and assimilation. (And by forced integration and assimilation, I mean forcing the natives to integrate and assimilate - the invaders usually cultural separatism and identity politics.) That is genocidal for the whites; it necessarily means that eventually they won't exist at all.
