This is old info 2009 data from the WSJ, but it keeps coming back to haunt me. A tax code that depends on 1% of taxpayers, 144,000 filers, to finance 50% of state income tax revenues has proven to be unsustainable, notwithstanding the liberal dogma that says tax rates don't matter. If those 144,000 people fled California, and it's possible. California collapses into anarchy. 144,000 Out of, what? 37 million or so? I'm not sure if it is above or below 144k at this point, a few years later than the piece, but I bet some of those have already left. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704471504574443413742032356.html sept 30th, 2009 Posted by: beach at December 05, 2012 11:59 AM (LpQbZ) Posted by: BumperStickerist at December 05, 2012 11:59 AM (RuUvx) Posted by: dananjcon at December 05, 2012 11:59 AM (jvd3N) 12

I got a dangerous warning for that link.
BTW, I hate the term "socialism" as defined by today's liberals who do not like the use of the term "communism" because of the 50 era Soviet Union bad PR. And guess what, liberals write the dictionaries and almost all other books. The one who originated both terms was Karl Marx. Socialism is an intermediate step in the trip to Marx's supposed utopia of communism. The US is, and has been a socialist State since the 30s when FDR started implementing his socialist programs. SS is socialsim, labor laws are socialism. Virtually every government program there is ow is socialism. We are ow working towards the "Communist Utopia" envisioned by Marx now. When the US started getting rid of private property we started marching on the road to communism. We started that in the 60s and are now well on the way. Obama is putting the cap on it now. He is nationalizing industries as we speak. The press just will not use that term. Posted by: Vic at December 05, 2012 12:06 PM (YdQQY) 44

The painting itself was done life-sized, in order to challenge the audience to accept these men's real, actual lives, and contrast their lives of suffering with the viewer's own life of opulent comfort in the Academe and Salons of the day. It was considered scandalous and revolutionary in the political sense. Posted by: Truman North at December 05, 2012 12:18 PM (I2LwF) 91

OT Just had my office Christmas potluck luncheon. There's a lady co-worker who I find absolutely stunning in beauty. She's Egyptian Christian (Coptic?) and she's built like she's straight out of a comic book. Long dark hair, olive skin, and a face you can lose yourself in. (Who's Kate Upton?) 4000 years ago, she'd be fucking Pharaohs and launching fleets. Her contribution to today's potluck was......not shitting you.....cake. Red velvet cake. Homemade. Yeah... If I say that Obama is a socialist in this crowd, I'll get hammered. Simultaneously, they note we were blamed for everything bad in the past, even when it's been the Democrats' fault. “[Dr. Wright] bent down and picked up the cross. He felt the weight dig into his shoulders. He placed the crown of thorns on his head. He started down the hard road, walked by the preachers and saints before him. The road walked by Martin and Malcolm. The road that still has the footprints of our Lord. He heard again the words of ridicule and derision, because the Romans were sore, sore afraid. … He embodies within him the power and the glory Satan cannot break. In the gospel of Matthew when Satan left Jesus … angels came to Jesus and anointed Jesus to preach the word of God. And that word tonight, in the preacher before us, lives and breathes, and so do the angels who stand by him.” . . . “The Romans, who Dr. Wright correctly reminds us were white — it was Jesus who was a person of color — don’t like preachers any more today than they did two-thousand years ago.” Posted by: WalrusRex at December 05, 2012 12:53 PM (Hx5uv) 224

One thing that conservatives need to get better acquainted with is the language of public goods beyond the military. Libertarians seem to have a better grasp on it and it's very useful in distinguishing between things like "roads" and "financing health care" or "investing" in anything beyond basic research and which can, on occasion, become government's responsibility and which should always be left to civil society or the markets.
Once you subject liberal programs to the criteria of public goods, you see that many of them fail to meet that criteria or meet it in ways that are reflective only of subjective preferences on the part of those staffing the various bureaucracies. The greatest success of Leftist propaganda over the past century has been in blurring these distinctions. But, Republican candidates seem to lack the ability to talk about these distinctions coherently and so fall prey to the media swarm around terms like "socialism", which is too bad because there is a very rich philosophical discussion around these terms going back ages which can be used to rebut the idea that every policy the Left would like to enact is analogous to the government providing roads and bridges. At the very least, GOP candidates could say "We don't object to the government providing goods that everyone can use, what we object to is the government picking specific classes of citizens and providing things only they can use" and then go on to make the case that the first part of that sentence doesn't imply nationalization of industries because that would require violating people's right to private property and free association. opinion on the matter) have the power to tell Banks who to lend to, or at least how to weight their approval criteria? If the answer to that is "yes," the the Government controls lending. The fact they do not exert full control does not mean they do not have full control. --- This. Liberals win when people don't understand history and where things came from. I was talking to a Social Studies teacher the other day about her civics unit, which uses an NYT article to essentially say that conservatives like old policies whereas liberals are for freedom and progress. I asked if she went into the history of the labels, and I got this really funny look and a negative answer. So much for "critical thinking"... Since the 1970s I used to think it would take another Pearl Harbor to wake this country up. Some of the country woke up after 9/11 but it wasn't enough to compel them to change course. I refused to believe that the 2008 election was the tipping point. After 2012 I have no choice but to believe that the people who crave liberty and understand what it means to be an American are now outnumbered by those who prefer an entitlement society. I hate it, but there's no way back.

Turns out that in practice, it's not really that. Part of the problem is that young people generally haven't had any experience in making difficult decisions regarding scarce resources, which is what adult life and capitalism are about. And as for the idea that it was the "wrong people" in charge, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that everyone in the leadership of the Russian Communist movement, even Stalin, was a fuck of a lot smarter than Obama and any of the dipshits who support him. expressly not to blame in the mortgage bubble. However, almost all of those people who failed to be approved for "conventional mortgages" were then approved for "sub-prime" mortgages. This is what makes me crazy about conservatives and the sub-prime debacle....CRA was around from the 1970s. In the 80s and 90s there was no sub-prime craziness. Then in the 2000s, under a Republican president, the sub-prime shit hit the fan. And what is to blame? CRA, a 30 year piece of legislation. Let's ignore the 0% interest rates set by Greenspan. Let's ignore the "owenrship society" pushed by Bush. Let's ignore the CDOs that magically turned junk status notes into AAA rated notes. The FEDERAL government, does not set speed limits. They can tell States "set the speed limit on road X to Y, or you don't get sweet, sweet government money" but the State Government actually sets the speed limits (and can be over-ridden by local government in the right circumstances). You're about this close (holds fingers close together) to me deciding you're a troll and telling you to F off. I wasn't "ignoring" anything in the subprime bubble. I was pointing out- relevant to our conversation- that CRA and it associated regulations give the Federal Government complete control (or close enough that the difference is negligible) over lending- especially (in the case of CRA) over mortgage lending. You're the one who came back trying to disprove that statement by referring to "Conventional" mortgages- completely ignoring the subprime mortgages. This makes me sick. I'm done with the GOP.
-- Me too, though not really due to Boehner's purge although it's an additional sign and symptom. The GOP has at best looked the other way or at worst assisted in the cover ups of Obama's radical background, Fast and Furious, and Benghazi (to name only a few). They have refused acknowlege what is happening to and in our country today, to spell out the nature of this administration and to educate the public. They don't do anything about the media bias (suicidal, IMO). Since the GOP has an obvious motivation to do all of these things for their own benefit not to mention for the good of the country, but they haven't, I've concluded they are enabling Obama and the Dems. They sure aren't representing me. Posted by: Mayday at December 05, 2012 01:35 PM (F3s39) 292
If socialism worked in the real world, I'd be a socialist. I follow the logic and go where it takes me. But, based on historical experience, socialism doesn't work and--since it's based on false premises regarding value and innate characteristics of human nature--it cannot work, ever, so I'm not a socialist.
Glad to know the word is finally coming out in the open. It disgusted me no end that 'mainstream' Republicans would refuse to call out Obama for what he is, what he's always been. As a heads-up, socialist states are typically ruled by one party. Dissent is...discouraged. Voting is a formality with a preordained outcome. Also (and most importantly), socialism is at complete odds with the US Constitution in purpose and specificintent, both word and spirit. An American citizen is duty-bound to resist a socialist state. GMA and Stephanopolous had a similar response to the story. They all just turned to each other and said "Socialism"? Huh? Well, I wonder why?
This week a slew of polls came out that show majority of Democrats view Socialism positively and soon after Obama was elected in 2008, Hillary, Howard Dean, the entire brain trust of the party were making remarks like, We need some Socialism or Why do people say Socialism is a bad word. So its not like these people don't know what the Dictionary story means. The truth is they just don't know how to spin it. O'Donnel's statement is almost nonsensical. "I find it so interesting that Socialism is the number one word, because Obama was 'Labeled' as a Socialist so people wanted to see the actual definition. I find that so interesting". What the hell does that mean if we assume she is sincere, which she is not? I find it so very, very interesting that people looked up the definition of "Birth Certificate" because of the Birther accusations. I just find that mind blowingly fascinating. Charlie Rose hit the eject button on the segment by declaring "I'm definitely not a Socialist". Eject! Posted by: TJ King at December 05, 2012 03:49 PM (bTARb) 295
