Bob Costas: I Wasn't Talking About Gun Control. People Just Inferred That. Do I Support Gun Control? Why, Um, Yes I Do.

Damn you for inferring what I implied!

That's on you, bro.

What I was talking about here, and I'm sorry if that wasn't clear to everybody, was a gun culture. I never mentioned the Second Amendment. I never used the words gun control. People inferred that. Now do I believe we need more comprehensive and more sensible gun control legislation? Yes, I do. That doesn't mean repeal the Second Amendment. That doesn't mean a prohibition on somebody having a gun to protect their home and their family. It means sensible and more comprehensive gun control legislation.

Even if you had that you would still have the problem of what Jason Whitlock wrote about and what I agree with. And that is a gun culture in this country. It demonstrates itself in different ways. It demonstrates itself in the Wild West, Dirty Harry mentality of people who actually believe that if a number of people were armed in the theater in Aurora, they would have been able to take down this nut job in body armor and military style artillery. When in fact almost every policeman in the country would tell that you that would have only increased the tragedy and added to the carnage.

It also plays itself out, and Jason Whitlock had some insight into this. It plays itself out in the inner cities where teenage kids are somehow armed to the hilt. And it plays itself out, and this I know the whys and wherefores of, in the sports world, where young athletes are disproportionately armed.

The "teenage kids" have those guns illegally. Many will have records, and so cannot obtain a gun license. The rest will just never seek a gun license, because it's all but impossible to secure one in most cities. Same for any citizen.

So, the people he's talking about should not, by law, have guns, and yet they do. His preferred strategy? Let's have some more laws that criminals can ignore.

No, seriously, only the law-abiding abide the law. It's sort of implicit in the words themselves. Look them up in a dictionary, Bob. I'm not making this up.

No one ever explains why it's critically important to strip rights away from law-abiding persons.

I feel like using the gay marriage argument against them -- they are fond of saying "My marriage doesn't affect yours." How about, "My gun -- lawfully purchased, and lawfully used -- doesn't effect someone else's illegal gun, and their illegal gun doesn't affect mine."

Can we just call a spade a spade here.
We need to talk about "thug culture." Not gun culture. "Gun culture" is diffuse beyond reason.
Heck it's even more diffuse than "geek culture." At best it's a loosely connected group of several sub cultures. But even that is wrong ("Handgun culture?" Unlikely.)
But yeah, let's go ahead and group all that shit together. The High Caliber lovers, the handgun lovers, the skill target shooters (often not shooting high caliber weapons) the hunters, the collectors, the thugs. They're all exactly the same, right Bob?!
Also his reasoning is flawed at best, especially bringing up the theater shooting. Would he advocate that people don't carry pepperspray or tasers? In this case a gun is just another tool of self-defense and protection. (Plus there's a miserable strawman there that we all believe the theater shooting would have simply been stopped by a plethora of gun wielding citizens. At best I think most people think it would have shifted the odds in the favor of the theater goers not completely eliminated the threat/carnage (crazy gonna crazy.) Plus factor in his stuff about upping the carnage. I haven't taken any conceal and carry or tactical classes, but wouldn't they teach you not to take a shot that could potentially injure bystanders? (Similar to the hunting idea that you don't shoot if you can't tell what's on the other side of your target.) I realize the situation is stunningly different, but most people aren't going to just shoot wildly and risk injuring someone they're trying to save.

So the TL;DR, BULLSHIT.

said, 'How many of you guys own a gun?' And roughly 65 hands went up.
Even if all those guns were obtained legally, you can't have 65 guys in
their 20s and 30s, aggressive young men, subject to impulses without
something bad happening. And I posed this question. I didn't have time
to pose it Sunday night but I'll pose it here. Give me one example of an
ath-a-lete. I know it has happened in society. But give me one example of a
professional ath-a-lete who by virtue of his having a gun took a dangerous

gun, a professional ath-a-lete wound up in a tragic situation.

How do we dig ourselves out of the gun culture mess? Stricter gun control laws won't help, as was said, because law breakers will find a way to obtain them illegally like they are already doing. Just like kids buying alcohol underage. You can regulate liquor stores till the cows come home, but they will always find a way to get it. Maybe they will steal it. Maybe they will pay someone of age to go in and get it legally.

That said, what CAN we do? "Talking" to kids in the schools isn't helping. Hoping that parents will raise law abiding children sure isn't helping. Pouring money into inner city youth programs isn't helping. So, what is the solution?

They all rage against guns in the name of safety, while seeming quite happy in the safety that comes from living life behind layer after layer of armed protection.

Or, more precisely, a gun "sub-culture" exists, primarily in urban, poor neighborhoods that are mostly black and Latino (the subculture from which many professional athletes come). Stricter gun control laws won't help, as was said, because law breakers
will find a way to obtain them illegally like they are already doing.
Just like kids buying alcohol underage. You can regulate liquor stores
till the cows come home, but they will always find a way to get it.
Maybe they will steal it. Maybe they will pay someone of age to go in
and get it legally.

That said, what CAN we do? "Talking" to kids
in the schools isn't helping. Hoping that parents will raise law
abiding children sure isn't helping. Pouring money into inner city youth
programs isn't helping. So, what is the solution?

Prison, no key required.

Seriously though- too many jurisdictions treat felony gun possession like jaywalking. A felon drug dealer who gets caught with a gun and drugs? There's a good chance they'll plea bargain away the gun charge because they're more interested in getting the drug conviction.

Too often they consider the gun charge a lesser crime than possessing an eighth of cocaine.

"Of sorts?" Yes, if by "of sorts" you mean "a complete fabrication for the purposes of selling entertainment."

IIRC, in the years surrounding the famous Shootout at the OK Corral, the town of Tombstone never had more than 1 or 2 murders. Their highest homicide rate of those years *was* the Shootout, and that accounted for all of the homicides that year.

People in the "Wild West" had better things to do than get in gun fights. And, since everyone was armed, the Rob Howard doctrine applied- people are more inclined to be impolite when giving offense does not generally end up with them getting brained by a rock.

Error. Does not compute.

The problem is not one of a gun culture (however nebulous a term is). You've fallen victim to the classic blunder of accepting their premise. The problem, as others have eloquently stated, is one of exalting the thug culture over traditional values of strong family relationships, hard work, personal responsibility, obeying laws, etc.

The NFL and other professional sports are some tools by which the thug culture has prospered. Film and music are others. Costas is merely ignorant or lazy or both in inaccurately blaming a whole segment of society for the ills that brought this man to shoot his wife and take his own life.

He long owned firearms before he got to the point in his life where he decided that violence against his woman was the answer. But for the gun, he might have strangled or stabbed her. And no amount of additional gun control would have address the issues that made him the man he was.

I won't put words in Dave H's mouth directly, but I think you missed the actual point of his post at 169.
Until we can critique the actual problem (gang culture, thug culture, whatever) we can't get anywhere. But it's not a "gun culture" problem (especially as Costas means it). The closest connection you can draw is that it's a cultural problem in which guns play a role.
But even that's off the point. If by some magic I could literally will away the existance of every gun on this planet as well as the memory of the existance of guns, so no one's angered that their guns are gone. (I don't want to do that, but let's grant that for the hypothetical here.) These "subcultures" would still have a violence problem which is the real issue here not the guns. You'd see a different manifestation (Molotovs, rocks, knives, whatever.) But the end result would be the same.
How do you solve that problem? Well you start by locking up criminals, and you have to rebuild the family nexus among other things.

Woah, woah. We're blaming Dirty Harry here. An old white (fictional) guy. You start blaming thug culture, and that gets too close to rap culture, which is too close a multi-billion entertainment industry that NBC is part of. Bobby don't play that.

257 Dear Bob Costas,

You are making so many non-apologies lately precisely because what you said was dumb and offensive, supported someone else's column that was also dumb and offensive.

Once again an out of of control angry childlike football player murdered someone, the mother of his child, and killed himself in a stadium in front of his coach.

Bob, and a considerable portion of the NFL and the press apparently wants to hold head injuries, racist society, and the legality of owing a handgun responsible for the murder suicide instead of the rich privileged football player that did it.

The man did not obey the laws against murder, so why presume he would obey a law banning or restricting the sale of hand guns? He had two of them. And what's this crap about the pressures of class and cultural degradation in this racist country? Romeo had a BETTER position and life than most people do here. He was not oppressed!

He was elevated! He killed his own girlfriend because he'd rather see her dead than have her leave him like he was some decadent prince who knew he was above the law! He was the oppressor! He has bozos like Bob Costas trying to absolve him of being a murder who killed a helpless person who purported to care about.

He was a Nero gunning down some nameless replaceable concubine until the reality hit him! Would that reality had hit him sooner before he hurt anyone! Then he went to his coach, whined about his mistake, and took the coward's way out as he heard police sirens. Better to not ever feel a bullet than to lose all your stuff and risk ending up in Jail and PAY for your crimes!

And Bob Costas wants to help blame everybody and everything but the actual jack off prick murderer for the fact that Romeo Belcher was a jack off prick murderer. Someone has to hold the gun and decide to use it costas. It's not a little steel demon that takes control.

Also while we're busy boycotting NBC don't forget the other channles you'll have to avoid:

306 Something I was thinking yesterday and have had my thoughts confirmed twice already today is liberals like to punish innocent people while being soft on crime. They are like the proverbial drunk who looks for his lost keys under the street light, even though he lost them somewhere else, because it's easier to see there.

Guns are the classic example, but this predilection comes up again and again: someone isn't obeying an existing law, so we pass a new law that *everyone* has to obey--or become a criminal. What does that do but create more and more criminals? Why would the old criminals obey the new law any more than they did the old law? Yet you will have formerly law-abiding folk who run afoul of the new regulations, practices, laws, whatever you want to call them.

This liberal friend was joking about how we ought to put a curfew on males to fight rape. Yeah, because someone who ignored the prohibition against rape will abide by a curfew.

I no longer think this is an accident of stupidity by the way. Many of the people who want to take away your guns aren't really doing it to stop the criminals with guns--they just don't like that you have them. Just as this liberal wasn't really expecting a curfew to decrease rape: she just harbors a secret desire to make life harder on men. That rape might not decrease is irrelevant to the utility of poking all men with a new law. (Serious? Probably not, but imagine if I made the joke about *black* men and putting a curfew on all black men to cut down rape).

Posted by: KG at December 05, 2012 01:13 PM (p7BzH)

319 Costas is one of those simpering buffoons who would prefer that victims of violent crime choose the CERTAINTY of being KILLED execution style, with a bullet to the back of the head than the RISK of being WOUNDED by somebody attempting to stop the carnage.
He and that mental defective Whitlock are today's Judenrat, kicking everybody else onto the boxcars first, hoping to be the last ones "resettled to the east".

320 The term Moral Leper just doesn't get used enough.

321 It's not as if the big Conservative hooha about Costas' remarks are changing Liberals' minds. If anything, it confirms that Costas is correct to the liberal mind.

I don't care about "liberal minds." My target is the multitude without a hard political belief. They are the ones we need to engage. The low-information voter to whom Costas' rant sounds reasonable. If we're not there to offer an alternative, we lose.

How about instead of attempting the near impossible - a successful boycott that actually drives a network out of business - we find conservativevs to fund their own networks? There's room for more than one. And plenty of money to be made.

322 Why, White People again! Jason Whitlock:

my thoughts on the NRA and America’s gun culture – I believe the NRA is the new KKK. And that the arming of so many black youths, uh, and loading up our community with drugs, and then just having an open shooting gallery, is the work of people who obviously don’t have our best interests [at heart].

Everything is because of Whitey.
But I didn't here because of Affirmative Action; I earned mine.

I think that's a great idea.
But I'm concentrating on something WE can do. You and I.

I don't even think this is all that "impossible". Conservatives HATE the MSM. They know they're the problem. We just need 10 million to drop NBC. 56 million voted for Romney.

If we get Rush, Levin, Palin or Beck behind something like this - it's very doable.

A network boycott is doable. I'd try that. Sure. Bringing the cable industry to its knees would be something else.

325 Has anyone pointed out that Costas' "gun culture" clearly meant "black culture"?

Where is puffy face Chris Mathews, the official interpretor of dog whistles, when we need him?

326 Send this windbag to Egypt and let him sell gun control there.

Isn't he right, at least partially? The KKK was a bunch of racist democrats who hurt blacks; the current democrats who are loading up the black community with drugs via handouts and social programs are also a bunch of racists who hurt blacks.

328 Interesting that the examples Costas uses for the gun culture that he wants controlled are gun-owing professional football players ("aggressive young (black?) men in their 20's and 30's" was his phrase) and teenagers in the "inner city." Clearly, pasty white Bob Costas doesn't care about keeping guns from people generally, he wants to keep guns from black men particularly. While fat girly-man Chrissy Matthews warbles about dog whistles and racial codes in between pleasuring himself while watching Obama's first innaugaration, he ignores the fact that Costas has revealed himself as a shorter and more feminine version of Bull Connor.

329 I saw a clip from the inane midget Costas on O-reilly, and he notes that Tony Dungy told him that a lot of NFL players have guns. Costas thinks that is because of some 'Dirty Harry' (the evil mean Republican Clint Eastwood; and the numbskull Costas forgets to note that Dirty Harry was a cop, who legally can carry a gun even in Costas' Utopian world where citizens can't own guns) or Wild West fantasy. He jumps back 30 plus years for those pop culture references, but being the progressive that he is doesn't mention that a lot of rappers rap about guns; the little midget is very afraid of ever being called a racist (which he is because he thinks blacks are perpetual victims and need to be protected by liberals like him because of their helplessness). As Rush Limbaugh, Ace and others have mentioned, this little turd and Whitlock wait around until a tragedy happens to push their political crap, and the second they are questioned on it, they claim that they are being attacked because their ignorance has been exposed.

330 Costas is a PU$$Y!
I hope he needs a gun someday to save his life and doesn't have it.
