Detroit Councilwoman To Obama: We Voted For You Now Show Us The Money!

Via @AG_Conservative a story which enables Mitt Romney to say...told you so.

City Council member JoAnn Watson said Tuesday the citizens support of Obama in last month's election was enough reason for the president to bailout the struggling the city. (Click the video player to listen)

"Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that," said Watson. "Of course, not just that, but why not?"

Nearly 75 percent of Wayne County voters pulled the lever for Obama in November.

"After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. and came home with some bacon," said Watson. "That's what you do."

Pay up you damn 1% types!

This is why I'm on Team Let It Burn. There's simply too great of a disconnect between the reality of our situation and what too many people think can and should be done. Four more years of this is going to put us well beyond the point of no return. Sometimes you need to let the old growth forest burn so that younger, healthier trees can take root and grow.

79 Detroit cannot get out of its own way. There hasn't been a single economic development project in Detroit in the last 20 years that has borne any long-term benefit at all.

And the reason is, the place is completely ungovernable. The minute someone comes along with a good idea that might work, and people start lining up behind it, the city government has its hand out.

That's where everything falls apart. Because we all know it's racist if you don't agree to line some politicians pocket on the way to decent governance.

Oh, and it's also racist to observe that Detroit has exclusively African-American mayors since January 1, 1974.

97 I don't have to become an official LIB member. It's going to happen
anyway. There is no saving us. Not when half the country is populated by
people like this.

The point of joining team LIB is two-fold: 1) Preparing for the enburnening and 2) getting to point and laugh at all those who didn't join when they had the chance.

I see two chances for America. We divorce. Or states take back power
from the federal behemoth, and leave them with only that which is
literally granted in the Constitution.

I'd prefer the later. I suspect the former is more likely.

Smokey the Bear heads

His ranger's hat is cocked

---

We had a city-parish merger about 30 years ago as well, though they still love to game this at times.

Specifically, the politicians put together an expensive bus tax and only let people living within the cities of Zachary, Baker, and Baton Rouge vote on it, even though the vast majority of people living within Baton Rouge live in unannexed areas developed in the past 30 years.

It passed in Baker and Baton Rouge but would have likely failed miserably in the latter it had included the unannexed areas considered to be within Baton Rouge.

There are a few specific things that did it.

203 It's kind of intriguing to me to think about Detroit. It's a bigger version of Allentown/Bethlehem, PA. Cities that were built and achieved great prosperity based on a single industry, which disappeared. Driving past the old Bethlehem Steel Works today is spooky and heartbreaking, but also sobering because this town really has no reason to be there anymore.

The western U.S.was oncefull of ghost towns that had sprung up around mines and oil patches, and once those resources were exhausted, the townspeople abandoned them. There was never any talk of bailouts for these towns so that the people could stay there. Americans understood that industry could come and go and you had to follow the jobs. Nobody felt entitled to live in a particular place if they had no means to support themselves there.

Why should anyone live in Detroit, and why should it be my responsibility to subsidize them when there are no jobs there anymore and won't be in the foreseeable future? What created Detroit was a one-off that cannot be recreated. Plenty of Americans have moved for jobs, sometimes repeatedly. Today we have thousands moving to western PA and North Dakota for jobs in the oil and gas fields. This is as it should be.

People in Detroit need to just get the hell out.

Detroit really needs to be burned down. Completely. It has no reason to exist anymore

Would you burn down the ruins of the Colosseum? The Parthenon? That place should be historically protected. Especially since America has relatively so few outright ruins.

We should make it a federally protected park. A timeless reminder of the hubris of man, and the end of all things in due time. A warning to future generations.

Yes, LiB/MiB. But, here is a problem I see.

The infamous Laffer Curve. We are by most accounts on the left hand side of the curve; it would be awfully hard to argue otherwise. So all them gob'ment actuaries know they can extract higher revenues with a higher tax rate. It is a fact. Will it hurt job growth and GDP? Why yes, but who cares; the gob'ment needs a short-term fix. That is all they NEED.

If higher tax rates push us over to the right hand side of the curve, well then our betters in DC will adress that problem when it comes. In the mean time (double entedre intended) - Pay up suckers!

You already know "we" are in no position to "kick some ass" anywhere.

"We" voted for sensible politicians -- some of us bitching loudly while doing so -- and lost. "We" demanded fiscal sanity.

"We" lost. Free Shit, Race and massive voter fraud (sorry, Ace, but you're wrong for backing away from this) won.

Choom Boy is in full control now. He has the MFM and the so-called Republicans in Congress supporting him, either directly or indirectly. The supposed "opposition" in bloggy-land is reduced to irrelevant whimpering and snark.

It doesn't matter whether we advocate the LiB "strategy," though I suppose it makes some people feel brave to repeat it endlessly. We lost.

Maybe after the coming collapse we can pull a few people together and save a few bits and pieces, but the major damage has been done.

290 Reminds me of the old joke:

Coach Bobby Ross had put together the perfect Detroit Lions team. The only thing he was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges, and even the high schools, but he couldn't find a ringer quarterback who could ensure a Super Bowl win.

Then one night, while watching CNN, he saw a war-zone scene in Bosnia. In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Bosnian soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand grenade straight into a 15th-story window 200 yards away -- ka-boom!

"I've got to get this guy!" Ross said to himself. "He has the perfect arm!"

So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football, and the Detroit Lions go on to win the Super Bowl for the first time in history.

The young Bosnian is lionized as the Great Hero of football, and when Ross asks him what he wants, all the young man wants to do is to call his mother. "Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the Super Bowl."

"I don't want to talk to you," the old woman says. "You deserted us. You are not my son."

"I don't think you understand, Mother!" the young man pleads. "I just won the greatest sporting event in the world. I'm here among thousands of my adoring fans."

"No, let me tell you," the mother retorts. "At this very moment, there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and this week your sister was kidnapped in broad daylight."

The old lady pauses, and then tearfully says "...I'll never forgive you for making us move to Detroit."

I had some level of hope that with Romney's election relieving the dread many businesses have towards the future, coupled with Romeny's success in business and knowing what business needs to succeed, coupled with the massive new Energy sources coming from Canada and North Dakota, that perhaps maybe, just maybe, we could out grow the current debt long enough to scale it back and create a soft landing.

I suppose a great many republicans think if Obama wasn't elected, we wouldn't have these problems.

Nothing but team red kool aid. We'd be just as boned and burning under McCain or Romney. No politicians can fix what's coming, the whole political system is FUBAR and has been for decades.

You can't look at the GOP history of governing and pretend their small government rhetoric is anything more than propaganda. If Obama is unusual, it's because usually democrat presidents underspend republican ones. Reagan spent more than Carter, Bush spent more than Clinton, and now Obama spends more than Bush. Romney would have spent more than Obama.

Nobody - nobody - turns this around. It might scare you and make hero narratives attractive and comforting, but no one is going to ride in andsave you. It will continue expanding until it explodes, and then everything burns.

323 @ 167, Baltimore. I grew up there. Last time I was B more (Charm city heh, heh) with the new wife, I wanted to go to the inner harbor.

Mama said you can't go there. Black gangs attack white people for fun but the press don't print about it.

I pulled back the duster, I had a AK pistol 30 round mag on 1 side, and a PPS 43C (35 round mag) on the other side with a concealed carry permit. Both are considered legal pistol carry in Texas.

Mama said, Md does not recognize Texas concealed carry permit.

My reply.."F MD. I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6"

I had a wonderful day at the harbor. I guess it was the evil glint in my eye, or those big gun outlines on either side of the duster! The homies did not bother me at all and kept a distance. No cops to be seen, they avoid it like the plague.

BTW ...let it freaking burn! Lighting fuse now!

I had some level of hope that with Romney's election relieving the dread many businesses have towards the future, coupled with Romeny's success in business and knowing what business needs to succeed

Ugh. Business. Big business in this country is socialist, no other way to do it, has been for decades. It takes 2 to dance, you cannot have socialism without Business on board. They ain't victims.

The other day they had a poll showing 25% of republicans support socialism, and everyone was like 'wtf are they smoking?'

But the same poll showed that 75% of republicans supported "big business". That means somewhere between 75% and 100% of republicans support socialism.

Yup, we have very much entered a Fascist phase in this country. It was a beautiful country while it lasted.

326 I'd just like to add that I don't take saying "Let Detroit die" lightly. Henry Ford was a great American pioneer, building his empire from scratch. He changed the course of American history. He helped thousands upon thousands of people gain employment, contribute to society, realize the American dream. (Back when the workers' American dream was just to have a decent paying wage and steady job, before the age of greed took over)

In that sense, I see Detroit as an American institution, an icon. It represents the American century, the roaring 20s, a simpler day and time when people were just grateful to have a job, do it well, provide for their families.

But, Detroit is clearly not what it once was. And, it's just not worth saving.

329 #326 A Henry Ford could not happen now, which is the really sad part of the story. Ford had an idea, a very populist idea, that he could make a lot of money making cheap cars that lots of people could afford. He had to take the existing auto cartel to court to get the right to build his cars. The cartel actually owned the patent on the automobile, and had refused to grant Ford a license to build his. In today's world, the cartel would win and Ford's idea would never see the light of day. And even if he did, the government would mandate so much pollution-control, safety, and other crap on the car that it would be too expensive for a minimum wage worker to buy.

Imagine the economic boom that could be created if a new company could build a basic car that cost $2000. If the company did not have to provide expensive health care and other benefits to its workers, had no UAW contract, paid no bogus corporate income tax that had to be baked into the price of the car, but just paid a decent hourly wage (which could probably be $25 an hour or more if none of the other taxes or union benefit rules applied); and the car did not have to meet CAFE standards, have air bags and computer chips and roll bars and 5-mph-bumpers. Just a basic car. Thousands could be employed making them and selling them, and could afford to buy them. This could be a "geek chic" car that young people would buy in droves, and poor people could have basic transportation to get them to jobs and good schools for their kids.

The Ford model is really what we need today to restart our economy on a large scale. But too many government rules made in the name of safety, pollution control, health care, and "tax fairness" prevent it. Liberals and low-information voters can never be made to understand this. The knee-jerk reaction is always, always "there go those conservatives arguing for slave labor and unsafe cars and more pollution." And then they argue for massive government spending on mass transit.

330 #327 No, I am not concern trolling here at all. Just being a bit contrarian to the knee-jerk eternally-aggrieved conservatives whoI think are actually hurting the cause more than helping. In fact, the real concern trolls are the people who are pumping up the Jim DeMints and telling conservatives to just go for it and blow up everything.

The last for years sucked, and the next four are going to suck some more. But a unified GOP in Congress has kept the last four years from sucking much worse, and could still stave off some of the worst shit Obama wants to do to America in the next four. Or, we can dissolve into stupid internecine squabbles and pointless primary fights, and lose control of the House in 2014. The DeMint approach seems to be:
1. Ignore the election and demand huge cuts in domestic spending with zero tax increases.
2. ?????
3. Win!

333 Would be nice to a documentary on NPR or PBS with names and faces of all the politicians in charge of Detroit -- examine their policies, their politics and show the end result.

Now that would be informative. Or, would that be racist?

So many on this thread saying, 'Let it burn!' and talking up apocalyptic scenarios and the like; e.g., the '35-mile rule' and so on. Has it occurred to anyone that President Obama and the cadre of hardcore, old-school revolutionaries who have mentored and supported him all these years not only want the system to crash but are doing all they can to bring it about? They've spent years--decades--orchestrating his ascent to the White House and engineering an economic catastrophe, which is now imminent and for which--thanks to the quisling American press--they will receive none of the blame. The whole point of this decades-long project has been to create the conditions under which these totalitarian ideologues will never have to relinquish power. So please stop imagining that bugout bag in the closet and directions to Uncle Bob's rural cabin by the lake are going to somehow make you safe from what's coming our way. There is no safe place or perfect plan.

Those of us who resist increasingly authoritarian measures such as free speech limitations or unconsitutional gun laws and regulations will be villified as racists and extremists in the press, with our characters assassinated, homes invaded, guns and property confiscated, audited, ruined, imprisoned. So what to do? I don't know. Quote Lincoln, I guess: "Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it."

2. Decide you want what liberals want.
3. We won!

336 Dream on if you don't think Obama will bail them out (and IL and CA and RI) because he doesn't need their votes.

Get this through your heads... CHICAGO WILL NEVER LET GO OF WASHINGTON!!!

Whether it's Michelle or Rahm or Barak himself if he can pack the Supreme Court and have his tame poodles invalidate the 22nd amendment, Chicago will be on the ballot for the sham "election" in 2016.

337 >> But a unified GOP in Congress has kept the last four years from sucking much worse,

How? We have PlaceboCare, taxes are about to go up at least as much as simply expiring the Bush tax rates (with the only question being whether the middle class gets to share in the pain), government spending is still a quarter of GDP and NOBODY is talking about even bringing it down below 23% GDP.

The best thing for Michigan is to let Detroit go down.

Once
the city stops making it's payroll, the exodus will happen. All the city
dwellers will leave for states with better benefits, leaving the real
estate for new pioneers.

Get rid of the current residents and I would invest in a new city.

xxx

Um... the exodus would probably head our way, and we're not keen on that plan.

Perhaps we can arrange mass transit to Illinois? Our taxpayers (yes, WE have them) would be OK with that.

Well, of course. The burning is going to happen, so let's get on with it now before he consolidates his power any further.

There are still some judges and military officers who won't go along with Obama., but time is not on our side.

Judges are increasingly irrelevant and almost wholly suborned. Look at 'Go Along, Get Along' Roberts. And military officers? The same crowd who kept glossing over the 'idiosyncrasies' of Major Nidal Hassan because they were fearful of violatingthe pervasive culture of poltical correctness in the officer corps? The ones like Petraeus, who went along with the Benghazi coverup because he was suckered intothe world's most obvioushoney trap? Please.

We're on our own.

344 I used to think that conservatives were the optimistic ones of this world, but now I'm thinking that view actually belongs to the Libs.

I present example A...Whole Foods is building a retail grocery store in Detroit set to open in spring 2013.

http://www.freep.com/article/20120514/BUSINESS06/120514018/Whole-Foods-Midtown-Detroit

You have to be really optimistic to think that Detroit will be able to support an upscale grocery store like Whole Foods. They are currently calling for artists to paint murals on the sides of the building, and are willing to fork over $8500 for labor and materials...considering the graffiti artists, I can't imagine why they think they need to pay some one.
