Unshocker: Majority of Democrats Like Socialism

Okay that's not really a surprise  - the fact that 53% of Democrats view socialism positively seem rather low actually.

But who the hell are these 23% of Republican voters who loves themselves some socialism?!? Are they unclear on the concept or did they punch the wrong chad or something?

"Careers Start by Peeling Potatoes"

There's no substitute for having deep knowledge of every step involved in a business. And that is best learned from the ground up.

One of the iconic punishments in basic training in the military was being threatened by our drill instructors of being assigned to KP - Kitchen Patrol - as a penalty for breaking some rule. If you got assigned to KP you were sent to the base kitchen and had to peel potatoes all day for all the soldiers on the base.  It was tedious work but to my surprise I found that it wasn't the dreadful experience our drill instructors made it out to be. But working in the mess hall, the real eye-opener was the inside look at the workings of something I took for granted - how do you cook three meals a day for 10,000 people at a time. Peeling potatoes was a small bit in the thousands of things that had to go right every day to keep 10,000 of us fed.

One my first career lessons: stop taking for granted finished goods and appreciate the complexity of the system that delivered them.

The Disappearance of Heroism in the Nanny State

Sometime the cradle-to-grave lesson  of passivity and deferring all action to the authorities doesn't quite take. Here a 14 year old British student was the one who wouldn't stand by.

A teenager in his school uniform dived in to stop a fight which saw four security guards punched, kicked, head-butted and bitten.

Have-a-go-hero Jack Slater, 14,  did not spare a thought for his own safety until after he saved the security man from four attackers.

[snip]

Dozens of adults gathered to watch the  spectacle, but only Jack jumped in to help.

...'I've never done anything like this before and it was only afterwards I thought, "I could've been hurt there".

'My friend tried to stop me and said I was stupid for getting involved but it was a spur of the moment thing.'

Years ago I spent several summers in Mexico with friends and we would usually gather at local Denny's-type café for our daily lunch. After a few weeks we were regulars and knew all the other regulars. Once when some drunk was hassling a woman and got violent the regulars took him down and gave him the bums rush. But while doing so one of them told us to guard their stuff and the cash register so I knew we were accepted.

There were a couple other incidents involving rowdies and would-be thieves where we had to help out in the melees.  There were no authorities around but then people didn't have to have them around in order to take action and deal directly with trouble-makers.

How TV Killed the Soviet Star

Dallas didn't bring down the Iron Curtain but it sure helped.

As Nick Gillespie of Reason notes in the above encomium to the late Larry Hagman and the show that made him a superstar, in the 1980s, Nicolae Ceau?escu allowed Dallas to be aired in then-communist Romania, because Ceau?escu believed that the CBS prime-time soap opera showed all that was wrong with decadent capitalism. Instead Romanian viewers loved what the saw - and wanted a piece of it for themselves.

In Estonia as well:

In the eyes of the Communist leadership, that American serial with its jousting millionaires epitomized the creeping allure of capitalist decadence.

In the facetiously lighthearted documentary "Disco and Atomic War," the director Jaak Kilmi, who grew up in Tallinn in those days, recalls how the exploits of J. R. Ewing and company mesmerized his city in the far north of the country, where the broadcast infiltrated the Iron Curtain.

And sometimes heavy handed Soviet propaganda against the US ended up making the case for western 'decadence':

In 1977, the year I was born and the year my father, his mother, his aunt and many other Jews left the Soviet Union (my mother and I left in 1978 ), the Soviet propaganda machine began circulating a rumor. It went, roughly: life in America is so terrible that the old people eat cat food.

This was.perplexing.

People didn't quite get it: they have food specifically made for cats in America? What a country!

A lot of things about America remained beyond their comprehension.

An Homage to Larry

Larry is forever known as the middle-guy stooge and doesn't get much respect. But he was in every Stooges short and movie, didn't mind being the permanent straight man, and seems to have lived a pretty good life.

But Larry? Heck, 99% of the world IS Larry.

Larry Fine, a loyal Stooge for over 40 years, probably took more slaps, punches, eye-pokes, and stomach jabs than any comedian in history. According to Larry's brother, he developed a callous on the side of his face from Moe swatting him. But he stuck in there, he did his job, he watched as Moe hogged the leadership and Curly got the majority of the laughs. No one, in movies or in the real world, ever went with the flow like Larry Fine.

In real life, Larry Fine and his beloved wife Mabel had a happy marriage of over 40 years. Mabel passed on in 1967. The couple had two children, a daughter, Phyllis, and a son, John.

Whisky Cures Blindness in Vodka-Poisoned Man

Whisky on vodka, all is clear:

he doctor thought he might have formaldehyde poisoning, which is associated with ingesting methanol and can be treated by administering ethanol - the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

There wasn't enough medical ethanol available in the hospital, so the registrar nipped down to the local bottle store and picked up a bottle of whisky.

"Johnnie Walker Black Label. It was good whisky, yeah."

...Auckland City Hospital intensive care medicine specialist Tony Smith said administering ethanol was a well-established treatment for methanol poisoning.

It worked because the ethanol competed with the methanol and prevented it from being metabolised into harmful formaldehyde, which can cause blindness.

23 Peeling potatoes? Must have been in the 30's. When I worked at McD's in the 60's and they still made real fries, we had a machine that peeled the potatoes.

You threw them into this spinning container and it grated the peels off. I am betting the Army has them too.

you are describing what it is like to live in nyc. retail space for grocery stores is so limited stores only carry a limited variety of things. I went online to wmt several days ago and was flabbergasted by how many varieties of soap and detergent there are.

nyc and the unions refuse to let wmt in so we are ordering online. wmt will ship nearly anything you desire for free if you order $50 or more.

Socialists began their 'long march' through our institutions...in churches and seminaries. ...in the 1830's with the early Christian Socialists.
It really kinda started with whatwas going on in France, a about a generation before that. Somewhere around the time Napolean got started. (French Revolution)
Some guy named Thomas Paine was involved, too. (read some of his later works and not just "Common Sense."
So...if you see some conservatives in America who like socialism, I'd guess that chances are, there was/is a christian socialist in the pews or behind the pulpit, somewhere.

My college roommate was a Republican. He also loved Clinton and was upset that Hillarycare didn't become reality, hated Newt Gingrich with a passion. (as you can guess I was in college in the mid 90s). He was also one of about 15 people nationwide who supported Arlen Specter's 1996 presidential bid. 149 I pulled KP in bootcamp for a week. It was SOP for all Marine recruits. I got spud detail. We dumped spuds in a abraision drum and dug out the eyes afterward. It cost me Platoon Honor Man. I wasn't first in anything but I was second in every test both physical and mental. I got potato jammed in what would be my trigger finger the following two weeks when we went to the rifle range. My finger swelled so large I could barely get it through the trigger guard. Shooting was more than a little painful. The DI saw it and after squeezing it and asking me if that hurt, to which I responded, "NO SIR". He said, "Bullshit!, Get to the Corpsman." He lanced it and poked some silver iodide in the hole. That plus another distraction led me to qualify rifleman with the M-14. My Platoon Commander said Keith, If you had just qualified Sharpshooter I'd have recommended you for PlatoonHonor Man. That would have meant in addition to the rank of PFC I received out of boot I would have gotten a set of dress blues. They cost about $100 back then or a month's pay for a PFC. Yes, spud duty was a reality in 68.

I disagree to an extent.

If overhead costs go down a company can spend its money on many things. Two of them are expanding its work force and trying to steal/maintain talented performers - both of which will drive wages up.

Those aren't the only things a company can do obviously...but some money will go in that direction.

Anyway, increased wages, decreased costs for everything...what's not to love?

Now, I'm not really a fan of hardwood floors as I remember tumbleweeds of hair and skin accumulating on them when I was a kid, no matter how often you swept. The dogs urinating on the carpet and the resulting smell, even though I broke out the green machine and cleaned the spots convincenced me something had to be done. So I have spent the weekend removing carpet, nailing squeaks, pulling up carpet tack strip (I hate that shit), pulling up the oak hardwood in the hall (we're putting down natural maple), pulling up the 1/4 inch luan under the hardwood, sweeping, sweeping and more sweeping. By the end of next week the floors should be finished. Thats our Christmas present to each other. I think she is coming out ahead on the deal.

It was in response to someone who asked whether she had good locks on her doors or pepper spray.

A few years ago I bought a couple of guns and some ammo. I took a course in how to use and clean them. It also heavily emphasized principles of safety.

A little while later I replaced some doors and windows. The new ones are reinforced and are much more secure than the old ones were.

I spent much more money on the doors and windows than I did on the guns and ammo.

It doesn’t have to be either/or.

I think you'd hard pressed to claim Whitman, Weld, and Romney (at least when he was running as a local Massachusetts politician and not on a national level) represented anywhere near as large a segment of the party as the soc cons. Schwarzenegger was a freak occurrence, because of Davis's fuck ups. He couldn't get elected dog-catcher today.

It's fair to say Whitman, Weld, and Schwarzenegger were as in favor of big government as Bush and Huckabee, so point taken there. I just don't really view them as being representative of a significant portion of the Republican Party anymore, whereas Huckabee and Bush still are.

298 When I finished my basement a few years ago, to my regret, I removed a few crossbucks to rerout a heater vent to the floor above. I should have found a way to tie the joists together again. As I didn't the diningroom floor above has a bit of movement which loosened the nails holding the osb. That resulted in the floor squeaking a bit. So, while the carpet was up I used ringshanks and twist nails to re-anchor ther flooring. If I had real ambition I would remove the ceiling downstairs in that area and tie the joists together again.

300 That poll indicates at least 2 things. 1) People don't understand what it is to be a capital "C" Conservative. 2) People don't understand Socialism either. Most average people are somewhere in between but in general are pretty clueless. If the general public were forced to bear the true tax burden of Socialism then we might be more Conservative as a nation.

In retrospect we should have let the Dems tax us to death long ago. We have only enabled their government expansion by allowing liberals to hide the true cost of their policies by borrowing money. I say go off the cliff and give these fuckers whatever tax increases they ask for. They will have hung themselves.

A smart investor should buy a shitload of that crap when the price is down. Go to Home Depot or Lowes when there hasn't been a hurricane for a while and you can buy 7/16th OSB for under $5 a sheet. Have one hurricane blow in or threaten to blow in and the price jumps to $13 a sheet.

418 I did something like that for a brother, Dan, at Christmas when we were older and decided just to have one gift given by lottery like a secret Santa thing.
He had wanted those plastic-carrying-case sort of document holders so I got him about six of the things but I hid a 1967-style Maple Leafs' hockey sweater in one. He looked pretty disappointed at the gift but then he didn't open any of the friggin' boxes! So I had to get one of my brothers to hint to him that he should take a look in so he could find it (to his great joy, I'd add). So you'd better be careful or he's liable to put them through the wash before finding the small amount of money. (Unless that would make the point even better if he did?)

And goodnight, Ms Lizzy.

420 OMG more venting. The two shows I "watch" whilst cooking (not Canadian, either), are Judge Judy and Cash Cab, because neither one requires ocular attention. But they are both incredibly disheartening, in that you will see massively educated people being stupid, and terribly uneducated (although they, as citizens, had access, and most likely "graduated" high school) people being stupid. Either way, it's fucked up, and I don't even know why I watch them. Oh, nevermind, yes I do. To feel superior. I should just be a leftist asswipe so I could feel superior all the time. 427 About the Zimmerman photos released in discovery...I am EXTREMELY FAMILIAR w/this issue, since I've received ~3,000 discovery disclosures from FL prosecutors over the years.

Most prosecutors will NOT send you color copies of color photos--I think it's probably just cause their secretaries, who actually prepare the disco packets, don't have color photocopiers. The original photos are of course produced by cops, at least 98% of the time. Most of the time, the difference between color vs BW is immaterial.

The FL discovery rule, FRCP 3.220, doesn't actually REQUIRE the prosecutor to provide ANY copies...it only requires them to provide ACCESS to the discovery (police reports, photos, tapes, etc), and then you (the defense) may then copy it on your time dime. However, this wd force prosecutors to have dozens of defense attorneys walking around their offices all day, so they avoid this by simply sending us the photocopies.

Not to backseat drive this car, but even the black white photo is pretty inflammatory...If I'm defending a murder charge (very high profile), I like to think I'd be on the phone to the prosecutor to ask him if there WAS a color original of the BW photocopy.

Maybe they did? And the prosecutor stonewalled them? If so, then this will be a huge advantage in a potential Motion to Dismiss for "StandYourGround"--good equity for the judge, helps to offset that bad equity re the bail issue a few months back.

BTW, I am a real FL defense attorney, but I don't play one on TV.

A smart investor
should buy a shitload of that crap when the price is down. Go to Home

can buy 7/16th OSB for under $5 a sheet. Have one hurricane blow in or

One man testified that this sort of restriction led to supporters in Seattle suing the city for restricting the collective gardens.

Then there are a lot of liberal poseurs who fall within the self-identified "Republican leaning" camp. Arrested development types. Perma- students. College professor types. David Brooks acolytes. It all adds up. They're ignorant. Spoiled.

It doesn't add up all the way to 23% of Republicans (that's obviously an outlier), but it does add up to a much higher percentage than what it should be. Bad demographics = bad results.

The fact that Zimmerman -- who has a finite store of years to fuck around with this kind of bullshit (as opposed to the state of Florida, which apparently has no more pressing issues) -- still has to spend time and treasure on this issue when bloggers have meticulously pieced together timelines, movements, chronologies, and histories that show he should bear no legal penalty for this tragedy (and it remains a tragedy, still).....it just fuckin' boggles the mind.

Posted by: logprof at December 04, 2012 12:17 AM (gBuIk)

511 Okay, so one of my friends, who considers himself a moderate, but I consider to be liberal, posted a rant on FB......he has openly criticized ObamaCare, but has made far more leftist posts.

He talked about being disgusted with the Obama administration for worshiping anti-Capitalist, leftist socialists (his words). He asks that we write to Obama, and also to the commies (again, his words), like Gates and Buffett, calling them the enemies of the free market society. He says that they do not speak for real Americans, and need to stop pushing their liberal agenda.

Now, like I said before, for someone I am so used to hearing liberal dribble from, this was a very shocking thing to see on FB.

He apparently hung around with a crowd that supports this kind of assholery. One of his friends had an email exchange with one of the gawker websites where this friend says that Kasandra was "the catalyst for this whole event" because she had taken the baby to her cousin's house without Javon's consent (it's just silly to think she was legitimately afraid of a guy who drank, abused pills, and made a nice living as a human battering ram, and who, uh...killed her), and she was only after his money. The evidence of gold-digging was that Kasandra, parent of a newborn, hadn't yet gone back to the part-time retail job she'd held while she and Javon were together for the past few years.

The tell is, how would a "moderate" come to the understanding that Gates and Buffet are anti-capitalists? 569 Ethical question for the horde:

It's Salvation Army red kettle time, and I have questions. Generally, Salvation Army is one of the orgs I support, usually by dropping things off at their store.

But... this is where I worry. I've seen lots of stats about people on welfare who can work, but instead, choose to get every government benefit and live off Uncle Sugars teat. Even though they are fully capable of working.

So.. here's my ethical dilemma. Is it ethical to say no to charity? I don't know where the money is going, and with so many people who can work and who are choosing not to, how can I be sure I'm not helping them? How can I be sure my cash is going to the genuinely poor, not the government teat crowd?

As I said, I have no problem with the Salvation Army, but every time I see the red kettle now, I want to say "why don't you set up at a union hall, they're the ones benefiting from this economy, I'm not."

And I'm not that kind of person.

Anyone else having these problems?

He is the prime example of why you should never go with an "electable" Republican over a solid, and just as electable conservative.

During the recall election, the establishment went for Arnold, even though Tom McClintock (not a Congressman) could have won considered the anti-Democrat mood the people were in (>60% of the vote, IIRC, went to a Republican candidate). A McClintock governorship would have helped save the state, instead, we have the People's Republic we have today.

Charity is a different animal from welfare. The Salvation Army, and other good nonprofits working with addicts and other welfare-ish groups, demand accountability from their clients, and most people are (or at least should be) more inclined to be accountable to charities than to the government. Feeding the poor isn't what makes welfare bad---it's the entitlement aspect. Charity says "this is a gift" welfare says "this is your right".

Long story short, if I could pick, I'd give to charity only. Since I can't, I research and give to charities that seem to hold their clients accountable and run their operation efficiently. Check Charity Navigator.

582 Salvation Army has an excellent reputation for having very little overhead, compared to other charities.

I'll still give to them. The Socialists are trying to drive charities out of business and say that the government should be taking care of the poor.

That's become the general attitude in Europe, where there is much less private charitable giving than in the United States. In welfare states, the attitude is "that's the government's job."

587 Another thought---if you're concerned that your charitable acts might be enabling moochers, stick to charities that focus on children. There are groups that are there to benefit kids whose parents are in prison, and kids in the foster care system. Those are definitely innocent kids, and often enough their parents aren't anywhere around to mooch the gifts from the kids.

They do great work, and they are unabashed in their faith, but they help all regardless of faith.
A few years ago, I was on the board of a couple of non-profits, those non-profits seemed to get 95% of their funding from the government, and bitched and moaned when they didn't get their money when the economy went into a recession and the government had to make cuts. Since that time, I don't give a penny to non-profits that get the vast majority of their funding from the government. I will support the Salvation Army.

Ethical question for the horde:

It's Salvation Army red kettle
time, and I have questions. Generally, Salvation Army is one of the orgs
I support, usually by dropping things off at their store.

But...
this is where I worry. I've seen lots of stats about people on welfare
who can work, but instead, choose to get every government benefit and
live off Uncle Sugars teat. Even though they are fully capable of
working.

So.. here's my ethical dilemma. Is it ethical to say no
to charity? I don't know where the money is going, and with so many
people who can work and who are choosing not to, how can I be sure I'm
not helping them? How can I be sure my cash is going to the genuinely
poor, not the government teat crowd?

As I said, I have no problem
with the Salvation Army, but every time I see the red kettle now, I
want to say "why don't you set up at a union hall, they're the ones

I have been getting increasingly cynical about all sorts of charities, and there's a lot of 'em that I wouldn't give the time of day to. The Salvation Army -- assuming they're real, I wouldn't assume everyone with a red kettle and a handbell wasn't taking the swag every night to DNC headquarters and recycling through debit cards overseas into campaign funds -- is one that is solidly reputable.

Few people realize it, but SA is actually a church, and its management live like churchmice. Their fundraising expenses are smidgeons away from nothing, and their paid consultants for fundraising are even less. They truly help the poor with all that they can and do a solid job of it. Kroc's widow (of McDonald's fame) gave 'em a boatload of money a couple of years back because of their reputation -- and I understand they've talked to money managers accordingly......but there hasn't been a scandal yet.

But as far as any random "battered women", "hungry kids", "scholarships for the deaf" folks parked in front of WalMart? They can DIAF. They're getting all of theirs 'cause they voted in the grifter-in-chief, and I will be stone dead before they get another cent from me voluntarily.

And even for the SA -- who are the good guys -- these are years when we burn through what we got and you burn through the Kroc fortune.....with luck, I'll see ya on the other side of 2016.

Yeah, I know. That's why I singled out two groups---foster kids and prisoners' kids---who aren't living with their parents (or at least, not with the worst one in prisoners' kids cases).

I dunno. Personally, I hold that charity is not for perfect people so I accept that I'm helping some moochers along with some who will use the charity as a hand-up and eventually pay it forward (I'm one of that last group, and I wouldn't have gotten the help I did if everyone was more interested in punishing me for making a bad choice). But if someone is specifically concerned about enabling bad behaviors in adults, that's fair, too.

Maybe the Make-a-Wish foundation or St. Jude's Hospital? Or the Ronald McDonald House? That gets bonus points for pissing off the junk food nazis, right?

I actually know some kids in foster care, and my husband and his three sisters were in foster care off and on. A kid can't just up and decide to go to foster care because they don't like the rules, and most of the kids old enough to even try it would end up in a "therapeutic ranch" or group home. If you choose one of those places over a 9pm curfew and brussels sprouts, you're out of your mind, so I daresay that most of the little shits who chronically run away and end up in care for that reason aren't leaving great homes.

As far as the kid's charities go...

I have also been part of a few local kid's charities for about 15yrs (except 1 or 2 when I was the one needing help!) now.

It's kind of great, making Christmas for a family!

It's kind of sad and then frustrating and then maddening, when you realize that this kid or that family will NEVER have a decent fucking present under the tree provided by their parents, ever.

I just cannot wrap my head around someone raising her kids to ask "Santa" for; shoes, new socks (don't have to be fancy but my sister likes green), space heater that can't be knocked over by Abuelita, a good padlock with a combination, a real Bratz girl, the kind of pants that aren't jeans that bosses wear, with creases in front (I assumed he meant khakis) ...

Always peel potatoes. The skins contain all sorts of chemicals that kill the soil organisms that would otherwise cause them to rot in the soil they are buried in. Many are copper-based chemicals similar to what they used to use in pressure-treated lumber. Ever notice the green on red potatoes? That's the copper. All potato skins have them--some varieties are just worse. Why do you think our ancestors that ate every part of an animal--including its squeal--disgarded potato peels? It was not to be wasteful.
Older scientists at the U of Illinois tried to get the word out in the 1980s, but it all fell on deaf ears because of the potato skin craze (remember those mall stores?). The actual chemical analyses are pretty convincing.

The Northridge quake in 1994 was at 4:31 in the AM.

The 1971 Sylmar quake was at 6:00 AM

I remember both quite well. Earthquakes, the SoCal alarm clock.

651 Did something major happen? Or is this possibly a sarcastic post? Or maybe Obozo is falling out of grace with his constituents?
Posted by: Tickled Pink at December 04, 2012 12:18 AM (E1Vkf)

Obozo is, and has been falling out of grace with his constituents. They are dealing with this disappointment of promise, not by examining what it is they thought he stands for or their shared, flawed worldview, but by explaining that Obozo is ultimately a moderate Republican, being to the right of Nixon on xyz.

I've been noticing a lot of Nixon love in the leftosphere recently.

652 611 But who the hell are these 23% of Republican voters who loves themselves
some socialism?!? Are they unclear on the concept or did they punch the
wrong chad or something?

I have a loose acquaintance through an alumni-network, a pro-Obama prog in financial services. One of those guys who basically sells whatever shit they're pushing that week, but declares he's a 'financial advisor.' He trumpets supposed Independent status, lamenting the extinction of Rockefeller Republicans (often to cloud thinly disguised cultural and regional xenophobia). Anyway, he likes to describe himself as "locally conservative but liberal federally," which I take as nothing more than loving to spend other peoples' money on shit he'd rather avoid but stepping back when the hat is passed.

North Korea used to show the SK riots in the North, but their people were like "WTH, they can riot?" "...and look at the clothes they're wearing, and the nice cars, and the shops..."

656 Hmmm...

Fox-N-Friends thinks that the ACTU should set up a national bar exam for teachers.

Makes me think that there should be no State Bar exams for being a lawyer.

Oh, hell fucking no!

Even in AZ, it is 70% of the chance to educate a potential HS Math teacher to bullshit about "social justice" .

Teaching is NOT a profession.

Pedagogy is NOT even a "Social Science".

Not to say that I don't think these important subjects...

You'd be amazed at how many Catholics are Marxist. Ever hang out with any Jesuits?

Don't get Ann Barnhardt started about Marxists in the Catholic Church.

659 I'm in California and work with foster kids through a local charity. I'm familiar with about 25 cases. Not one ran away for the fun of it; instead they are in the system due to parents' massive neglect or abuse or both. Usually parent substance abuse and or other criminal activity is present. And policy favoring family reunification makes it very hard to ever place them into stable permanent adoptions....
