Bob Costas, Bien Pensant

ojsimpsonbobcostas.jpg

I cribbed that from Instapundit.

Costas revealed a series of flawed thoughts. I thought I'd note some of them.

The first flawed idea is the notion of mastery over the human condition, via the policy preferences of the dominant liberal elite class. Murders have been occurring for all 100,000 years of human history. And an especially ugly class of murders involve men killing their women when their women decide to leave.

No gun is needed for such murders, since men are generally much stronger than women. As the picture demonstrates, a man (especially an athlete!) doesn't need a gun to kill; he just needs a halfway decent cutlery set.

Bob Costas gets around this (he thinks) by suggesting it's not just about the gun, but about "gun culture," a culture, if I'm to understand this correctly, that encourages violent outcomes to personal disputes.

Responsible gun owners certainly don't believe that. Irresponsible gun owners and criminals do, but that's hardly a "gun culture" extending to responsible citizens.

Nevertheless, Bob Costas wants you to know that if you sign on for the cultural preferences of the monied liberal urban elite, we can finally have an end to this whole murder business.

This is an extremely arrogant idea, of course. But is as usually the case, people have the strongest opinions when they have the least actual knowledge.

Another thing Costas does here is to ignore three cultural matters that are less easily burbled about than his anti-"gun culture" kick, which of course safely targets White Republicans. Adam Carolla talks about this a lot -- it is a favorite posture of the liberal urban elite to discuss safe villains, White Republicans, who have nothing to do with the ills they're discussing, in order to avoid talking about things that aren't so easy to talk about. Things that actually do have something to do with the ill they're talking about.

The easiest of the other three cultures to discuss is the bubble that athlete heroes live in, in which most of their personal problems are "fixed" by a large and wealthy organization that has a lot of investment in them. This leads to the idea of action without consequences and all the evils that flow from that.

More difficult to discuss is the very violence implicit in football itself -- violence that leads to concussions and brain injuries (and brain injuries of course may well lead to defects in thought and judgement).

This is especially difficult to discuss because you can't have football without this. You cannot have what we know as "football" without the very real risk and frequent incidence of serious brain trauma.

Thus, we're all kind of complicit in this, or, putting it a different way, we've all accepted the violence as a necessary evil for a bit of entertainment. The athletes accept the cost-benefit tradeoff; the teams accept it; NBC accepts it; the public accepts it. We all accept that to have the game as we've had the game, and as we want the game, there are going to be some serious casualties along the way, the most serious of which involve the brain and spinal column.

And that's kind of a heavy, ugly idea. But it's true. Ninety percent of human thought is, I sometimes think, devoted to rationalizing why things which are obviously true are not true. And we reward people who give us the best, most plausible falsehoods denying the obvious truth.

The most difficult culture to talk about is a strain of black culture that is so rejectivist -- so knee-jerkedly oppositional anything "white" -- that it often throws out a lot of babies with the bathwater. That's a problem, because what we might call "conventional traditionalist white middle-class culture" happens to have seized on a great many extremely positive and useful mores, so any culture which is broadly oppositional to that culture is going to wind up rejecting many crucial moral guidances.

But while all of these are far more relevant to the murder-suicide than the "gun culture" Costas discusses -- his cowardice posing as a form of informed courage -- actually, none of them have much to do with the murder-suicide, either. Brain injuries may have something to do with it, but that's highly speculative. I'm just nothing them as having more to do with the murder-suicide than the Easy Dodge Bob Costa offers.

The main problem is really human wiring. Yes, for a 100,000 years men have frequently thought that killing a former lover was a good way to deal with heartbreak. (On the distaff side of the coin, women have also occasionally thought murdering a male spouse was a pretty good idea.)

People do in fact snap. Some brains snap under much lesser strains than others. And when people snap, they start thinking a lot of murder, and suicide.

And they don't need guns to do this, as they have never needed guns to do this. A knife works pretty effectively; a woman can use a knife, too. She's every bit a man's physical equal when a man is asleep, or pass-out drunk, or drugged. And beyond knives there is poison, and there are of course bludgeons and ligatures; and drowning people in bathtubs; and running them down with a vehicle; and dousing them with kerosene and setting them on fire.

A lot of these emotional-snap murders involve setting people on fire, including setting one's children on fire; nutty, murderous people seem to think that killing one's children is a great way to either spite the straying spouse even more, or a great way to clasp one's children to one's breast as one enters a fiery heaven. No idea what they're thinking, actually.

But I do know we're not talking about outlawing matches.

I have several problems with this sort of Automatic Liberalism, this sort of unthinking liberalism, but, confining my critique to the intellectual plane, my problem is that it is thoughtlessness passing as thoughtfulness and cowardice masquerading as courage. It's a very weak dodge, a manner of avoiding more difficult conclusions, but the Dominant Media/Informational Culture of the country has deemed these weak evasions to be Brave and Intelligent, and thus they are.

Costas will be praised for his guts-- but I notice he didn't discuss anything controversial, like the Athletic Bubble (that's something that's sort of easy to discuss for most-- but not when your job is promoting athletes and getting interviews from them), the broad Black Counterculture which is generally harmful to anyone who embraces it (and is unwillingly embraced by it) and, most of all, the sad and often violent state of the human condition.

This last one is the hardest one to discuss at all, because it offers no easy answers at all.

And that's precisely the thing that Jason Whitlock are looking for, easy answers, simple-minded statements they can posture as sages for speaking.

It's not an 'idea', it's dogma. It's axiomatic if you're a liberal that society is made through its government's laws and not the other way around, no proof is necessary. You can't be a liberal if you don't believe it.

56 In the past 2-3 weeks in Chicago, there have been, of course, multiple shooting murders. One emblematic one was the shooting (assassination) of a couple of gangbangers at a church for the funeral of another gangbanger who had been shot. This follows a tradition of gangbanger funeral processions where the scum weave in and out of traffic while waving guns around. It was even reported that a couple of guns were recovered at the scene of the shooting with only some police reporting later that the recovered guns were from the two scummy gangbangers who had been shot. Chicago does not have a murder problem but, instead, has a black murder problem. What mindset would make shootouts at funeral sensible. Over to you, Bob and Jason.

What women do to men is just as horrible and, in many ways, far more insidious. Not to mention that women also physically abuse men and good luck getting that taken seriously.

I'm not kidding that I could pick a guy's name out of the phone book at random, show up at the courthouse crying my eyes out and claim that he hit me and I'm terrified of him and the court would immediately issue a temporary protective order that would include confiscation of all of his guns. A few days later, the hearing gets held and I don't show up and it gets dropped. Nothing will happen to me. The guy has to go through the nightmare of trying to get his guns back and, as a bonus, he now has on his record that, yup, someone once took out a restraining order against him. Let me repeat, it is highly unlikely that there would ever be consequences against me for doing this.

Costas doesn't object to Men with Guns, so long as those Men have the appropriate government-certified credentials.

What they object to is you and I having a gun. They object to Non-Governmental Men with Guns -- men whose livelihood does not depend on the elite governmental class (the pool from which men like Costas are drawn) who dole out salaries to lower-class men who do real work for a living protecting yuppies, and are thus more willing to follow their orders.

Assholes like Costas don't have a problem with guns. They have a problem with freedom. More specifically, they have a problem with men they can't control.

86 In the past 2-3 weeks in Chicago, there have been, of course, multiple shooting murders.

Bob Costas gets around this (he thinks) by suggesting it's not just

Responsible gun owners certainly don't believe that. Irresponsible
gun owners and criminals do, but that's hardly a "gun culture" extending

Basically, we need to be naked all the time, and have a rule that says that no one can touch anything, ever, except when your feet touch the ground.

163 The Great Society did terrible damage to the black family. But black crime rates -- especially violent crimes like rape, murder, assault -- were much higher than white crime rates long before the Great Society. Black crime rates have been much higher than white crime rates for as long as the US has kept any statistics.

And crime has come down in the past 20 years even as single mom black families have soared -- now at 80% I believe.

Black violent crime rates have always been 5-10x that of whites. And whites are 2-3x that of asians.

Focus on all these other things make them the cause, and divorces abusers from responsibility for what they do

181 More difficult to discuss is the very violence implicit in football itself -- violence that leads to concussions and brain injuries

Yet soccer players, who head a ball dropping from ~50 feet in the air at 32 feet per second, and jar the shit out of their cerebellums on a weekly basis, are infinitely more likely to BE murdered then to commit a murder.

I think the NFL is being pussy-fied by the threat of lawsuits. These 'athletes' are people who, if they weren't getting paid mega-millions to beat up on other teams, would gladly beat up on any other individual for the pure joy.

187 Stupid history, always getting in the way....

----
Officially sanctioned as the Monroe NRA Rifle Club Mr. Williams recruited other Black veterans. The group armed themselves and started training with their guns. This further infuriated the Klan but it also inflamed the white liberals who had previously supported Mr. Williams and Dr. Perry.

The liberals were no more interested in seeing Black men exercising their Second Amendment rights than the Klan was. The White liberals were only interested in the Black population attaining some rights, not in securing the full rights afforded all free men by their creator.

The Klan was quick to recognize that the Blacks no longer enjoyed the support of the White liberals and increased their harassment of the Black community. Armed Klansmen regularly drove through the Black section of town shooting into homes and shooting at anyone unfortunate enough to be out after dark. Frequently, these drive-by shootings were preceded by a police patrol car that scouted targets for the Klan.

Unable to disband either the local NAACP branch or the local NRA branch, the Klan decided to mount a full, armed assault on Dr. Perry’s home. They thought they could bring down the groups by eliminating their most influential leader.

The local NRA branch heard about the planned raid and quickly called a meeting to be held at the doctor’s house on that night. Well armed men showed up at the doctors house and prepared for the assault they knew was coming.

When the Klan arrived, instead of finding the good doctor alone with his family they found the house fortified with sandbags and guarded by armed men who knew how to use their weapons. A firefight ensued.

The Klan and their police support were no match for the local NRA members. The NRA members drove off the attackers inflicting unknown causalities on the raiders.

227 Good post, Ace. And I know you are on eggshells writing about black culture, but the black football culture in this country is another thing entirely that needs some light shed on it. It would be really nice if some people like Jason Whitlock and Bob Costas would do this, but since it is politically incorrect to write or say anything bad about black people in America now, that's not gonna happen, instead we will just Blame The Guns.

It's entirely possible that Javon Belcher never even wanted to be a professional football player. That his greedy-ass parent(s) pushed him and bullied him and bullied other people to get him to a level where he could play in the NFL and make the big bucks so they would live on Easy Street. That he read and thought on an 8th-grade level because his football prowess got him the doctored grades and the fake college degree in African American Studies, so he had no clue about anything to do with being a functioning adult, much less a father. Isn't it just possible that such a young man carries an incredible amount of anger and guilt and angst within him, with no place to put it except knocking the hell out of opposing players on the football field? Until that one day, when his girlfriend has had enough, and she snaps, and he snaps.

230 Costas is 100% correct. In England they have no guns and so nobody ever gets murdered.

<i>"A teenager stabbed to death after a
party advertised on Facebook spiralled out of control has been buried in
a Cookie Monster coffin. Jay
Whiston, 17, died from a single stab wound to his heart after he
attended a party being held by a 15-year-old schoolgirl in an upmarket
neighbourhood in Colchester, Essex.

Despite
efforts from the girl’s family to keep the revellers closely monitored,
the event became overrun with up to 100 gatecrashers after it was
leaked onto Facebook. Jay, a student who lived in nearby Clacton, was stabbed to death in the road just yards away from the house." </i>

Written like a true theta male. Probably pissed his pants writing that because he scared himself.

Providing it was written by a male. It's got the kind of patronizing, elitist tone to it that most women "journalists" have when writing about things like this.

Here's my take: men are raised to be tough. This is what it is, and it happens on its own if it's not helped along. That's fine.

But If a man feels that he needs to talk to someone about a problem, then what I DON"T support is telling that man, "Don't be a pussy!" Men have every right to a calm, centered internal life as women do. If there's a problem that they can't work out for themselves, then I want that person to find someone who can help them instead of fighting a losing battle with their pride. Giving oneself permission to ask for help is, in many ways, as beneficial as actually asking for help itself.

240 The major flaw of Costas' (and the other guy) logic is that the lack of gun would have prevented the tragedy.

In other words, Bob Costas believes the KC player only meant to SHOOT himself and his girlfriend, which is - of course - absurd. The player intended to kill himself and her as well.

Intent to kill is irrelevant to the weapon used. When someone intends to kill, they will find the most convenient method to carry out that killing. In the absence of a gun, the KC player would have used an icepick, a frying pan or his fists...as to the suicide there are a few high locations he would have thrown himself from...in the absence of a gun.

The idea that the player and his girlfriend would still be alive is infantile. One way or the other he would have dispatched himself and his girlfriend. The gun was simply the most convenient method available.

If the kids are at any time able to access the internet for at least five minutes when no one is around during the day, the following school-administered (of course) advice should be sufficient for them to determine their orientation:
(1) They should note which version of the sites they visit to watch streaming videos
(2) If in doubt, they can click over to other version of a site, see if those videos do anything for them, or if they can even bring yourself to click one once they see the thumbnail.

Pretty simple. In fact, letting them visit these sites during sex ed. class sounds a lot healthier than whatever the "teacher" is doing for them.

Oh, and maybe some STI descriptive statistics tables broken down by gender and orientation so they don't leave with the wrong idea about the risks involved with spontaneous experimentation.

I've been called fat and laughed at my entire life. Guys in school used to leave fake love notes in my locker thinking I'd fall for that gag like some idiot Molly Ringwald character in an 80s movie. I never really cared much about going to dances or doing all the "girly" things that girls are supposed to like to do. And I got teased unmercifully for it. for most of elementary and middle school I just kept to myself and didn't make waves. Then in high school I woke up and realized, "Wait a second -- these people are IDIOTS." And I was much happier from then on.

It's called "growing up." Instead of taking insults to heart, you let them wash off or you use them to fuel yourself to get better. It's hard and it really, REALLY sucks sometimes. But when you grow up, guess what? You're the ADULT now. That means you get to do whatever you want and you don't have to listen to Sissy Spengler laugh at your hair anymore. You can laugh at Sissy Spengler. Or, even better, ignore her entirely. See how that works? And as for physical bullying, I fully support any kid who beats the living shit out of the bullies by fighting dirty, mean, and low. Give that kid a gold star.

If you're still holding on to childhood traumas to the extent that they negatively affect your adult life, then you need help. And like I said previously, I think anyone who wants help should know that they can seek it without being mocked. But dammit, sometimes you just have to put on your big girl panties and glare at the world and say, "Who gets stompy-booted today, assholes?"

284 KEEF OBERDOUCHE

in twitter rant Oberdouche called JR SALZMAN a dishonor to the military for disagreeing with Costas about gun control.

this is JR SALZMAN,

Emotionally affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks, Salzman chose to join the National Guard, enlisting shortly after the two-year anniversary. He was able to compete in the Great Outdoors Games twice more before his unit was activated as part of the 34th Infantry Division in the fall of 2005.[1]

In the spring of 2006, he was deployed to Iraq.
In Iraq, Salzman was primarily assigned to convoy security duties. On December 19, 2006, while scouting for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the lead Humvee of a convoy traveling through Baghdad, his vehicle was struck by an Explosively Formed Penetrator.

His right arm was severed below the elbow and his left hand was pulverized by the blast. He also suffereed a traumatic brain injury. As he is allergic to morphine he was transported to a field hospital before any anesthetic was given.[1] The first thing he said to the medic, indicating that his legs were uninjured, was "at least I'll still be able to logroll."

He recovered at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a nearby Fisher House, learning to use a prosthetic arm and recover his physical skills including fly fishing. His brain injury causes him short-term memory loss, and he is considered 100 percent physically disabled.[3]

Nevertheless, after returning to Hayward, he successfully attempted to logroll again, practicing with and without his prosthetic; "with" seemed to work better. Salzman returned to competition, and won a log rolling world title in 2009.

He is an ESPY award winner. I would expect Olberdouche to know this

285 #264 Good point. Men used to have the corner tavern, the Elks or Moose lodge, the poker group, etc. -- plenty of places to Just BeA Guy and shoot the shit with other guys. Those that went to college had the frat house or the men's dorm. My dad worked his ass off as a doctor, and had an exhausted wife and 5 kids at home, but he never missed his monthly poker game and his Elks meetings and his Temple Brotherhood meetings and his Civil War Round Table meetings. Sometimes I would get mad when he left us to go to these things. But he was one of the happiest people I ever knew, and his men friends were too, and overall they were great fathers and husbands. They would never have dreamed of any sort of violence against their wives or kids.

One culture you missed is the prevalence of rap culture. Men kill their women. Beat them up. Screw them and leave them to deal with the baby. Drugs are fine. Quick money is good. Violence solves every dispute. Baddest mother-effer wins.

The broader culture has not just allowed it to slip in, we have lauded it, cheered it, emulated it, repressed our own sensibilities of right/wrong to make accommodation for those whose life circumstances are different than our own. And it has taken over, and now professional sports are less athletic endeavors than they are semi-controlled street brawls.

Take a kid who's been steeped in rap culture, give him millions of dollars and no repercussions for bad behavior, and what do you get? Now do it thousands of times and put them on squads of 30 to 70 of the same kinds of kids.

The amazing thing about the Michael Vick thing a few years ago is not that his money corrupted him, but that it merely allowed him to do what he was probably doing all along; he just got caught when his wealth scaled the operation up to an obvious level.

And I'm afraid it will never change until the inner-city culture changes for the better. But reactions to the OJ verdict and Obama elections pretty much tell you the chances of that happening.

There are crap-tons of them hanging around every pro sports franchise, but because there are so many players on NFL teams, that's where most of them flock. They ain't in it for the babies, they're in it for the child support checks. The leagues actually have training classes for rookies to tell them how to stay away from these sharks, but men want what they want.

You would have thought the revelation years ago that Shawn Kemp fathered something like 13 kids with 13 different women would have shaken things up a bit, but apparently it has only gotten worse. Too many black girls are growing up knowing only how to use their p---y to get financial security

Getting hyped up about your kid's athletics to begin with is a big problem. The whole Friday Night Lights phenomenon is insane. It's a sport played by kids. Kids who can't do basic math getting a scholarship to a university (but that's a whole other discussion).
And no before you ask, I played sports in high school too. I played for fun. I had no aspirations of turning pro. And on a good day there'd be maybe 50 people watching a game, most of them being siblings/girlfriends of team members.

I saw you post earlier about single parenthood affecting the black community. When you look a the numbers, there is a clear picture that domestic violence is a problem, and a statistically greater problem in the black community. Why is that?
I think it is racist to say it can't be helped, but what accounts for it?

If it is the disintegration of the black family, isn't that part of its culture? Why is single parenthood so prevalent? Why is it accepted? Why are males not expected to be an integral part of the family unit? Why the hostility to women in song and slang? Why is that not just accepted but lionized?

There has to be a reason the incidence is higher in the black community. If it is cultural, it can be addressed. Otherwise, what is the cause

342 Bob Costas on the inner city streets preaching against the game "knockout punch". Which he believes was started by old white men to corrupt urban yuths.

343 When you find yourself saying "I agree with Jason Whitlok completely" you should consider it time to hang it up.
Costasis a tonedeaf boob. He says stupid crap all the time and gets a pass because he's mainly compared to idiots - his competition in sports broadcasting isn't staffed by sages people. The little twerp harshed on Cleveland Stadium Mustard while doing an Indians game, and couldn't fathom why the people in Cleveland think he's a pansy.
He's probably got a concealed carry permit actually.

You're asking me whether illegitimacy is a part of "black (American) culture," presumably since slavery? You're an American, right? Don't you know the answer already? Don't you know American history?

345 elliot m: The real criminal is the person that dyes Bob's hair. What color is that? Saucy Chestnut? I believe upon further inspection that Bob dyes his hair with soy sauce. It'd be a shame to let all those free packets from the take out place go to waste.

346 Those same lefty rat moneyed liberal "elites" will have a bulletproof limousine and a mercenary security force with all the best weaponry to keep them safe from those too stupid to manage their own lives peasants.

348 I wouldn't piss on Bob if he was on fire.
