Not Starving the Beast

Not only do we spend money we don't have on government but we're not even getting our borrowed money's worth.

The American species of homo economicus has been paying hundreds of billions to get rid of poverty for decades, what do we have to show for it? Poverty rate in 1975: 26 percent. Poverty rate in 2010: 26 percent. What a great return on the investment. Federal spending on education? Ahem:

Steyn: If You Want European-Sized Government, the Middle Class Must Pay European Style Taxes

Obama now wishes "the rich" to pay their "fair share" - presumably 80 or 90 percent. After all, as Warren Buffett pointed out in the New York Times this week, the Forbes 400 richest Americans have a combined wealth of $1.7 trillion. That sounds a lot, and once upon a time it was. But today, if you confiscated every penny the Forbes 400 have, it would be enough to cover just over one year's federal deficit. And after that you're back to square one. It's not that "the rich" aren't paying their "fair share," it's that America isn't. A majority of the electorate has voted itself a size of government it's not willing to pay for.

A couple of years back, Andrew Biggs of the American Enterprise Institute calculated that, if Washington were to increase every single tax by 30 percent, it would be enough to balance the books - in 25 years. If you were to raise taxes by 50 percent, it would be enough to fund our entitlement liabilities - just our current ones, not our future liabilities, which would require further increases. This is the scale of course correction needed.

How to Learn From Failures

This is how the Israeli Air Force does it and from talking with retired pilots I'm pretty sure the USAF and USN accident investigations are similar. Even in industry full-on engineering post-mortems generally follow the same procedures and guidelines.

If you truly want to solve a problem and prevent it from recurring, you have to get all the data you possibly can, abandon any preconceived ideas, and approach the problem impartially rather than trying to assign guilt. The GOP (and the conservative base ) would be well advised to follow this path when figuring out how to avoid another 2012 election. H/T Bookworm

China Asserts Right to Board and Search Ships in Most of South China Sea

Apparently China is feeling frisky and ready to throw its weight around. Note that half of all the world's oil passes through these waters and that traditionally one of roles of the US Navy has been to defend freedom-of-navigation in international waters. Interesting times to follow.

Already, China's expansive claims to the island territories and waters of the South China Sea have put it at odds with its neighbors and the United States over the past several years. Yet freedom of navigation has always been seen as the one red line with China's growing military strength. Beijing can threaten Taiwan, oppress Tibet, tussle with Asian neighbors over contested island territory, and build stealth fighters and carrier-killer missiles, but interfering with the world's trade and free navigation was assumed to be the one (plausible) thing that would result in intervention by the U.S. Navy to uphold international law.

The 'Success' of Gun Control

Various gun control legislation since 1968 was intended to reduce the amount of guns in the US and make gun ownership rare. Well that didn't work out so well.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) reported in a national survey that in 1994, 44 million people, approximately 35% of households, owned 192 million firearms, 65 million of which were handguns.

...By the same year, 2009, the estimated total number of firearms available to civilians in the United States had increased to approximately 310 million: 114 million handguns, 110 million rifles, and 86 million shotguns.

Per capita, the civilian gun stock has roughly doubled since 1968, from one gun per every two persons to one gun per person.

What Happens When You Find Your Pic on a Big Nose Fetish Site

Last year, I posed for Heeb Magazine's Shtetl Bunny Series. A couple of month's ago, a casting director friend texted me and asked, "Do you ever google yourself?" I told him it had been a long time. "Oh," he responded, "Did you know you're on a big nose appreciation site ?"

Um, no. I didn't.

A "Real" Vampire Talks About Drinking Blood, The "Twilight" Films

No sparkles and all the daily mortal hassles.

Movies.com has found the "Twilight" interview to end all "Twilight" interviews: a man named John Reason who lives in East Texas and claims he realized at age 14 that he is a vampire. John rides a motorcycle, wears cowboy boots, and was married for seven years . which all sounds pretty normal until you get to the part where he runs a site called RealVampireNews.com.
"[W]hen I was 14 years old, I started feeling really funny and having these headaches and body aches and different sleep cycles and cravings for blood. I thought I was crazy. That period is called the Awakening, and it usually happens around the time of puberty, but sometimes people are 40 or 50 years old."

..."[I]n the vampire community a lot of the struggles revolve around family life, whether it's just normal, day-to-day getting a job, or coming out of the coffin-as they call it-and explaining to your loved ones that you drink blood."

Result: A massive and permanent transfer of private wealth to the government. Presto, socialism, whether you wanted it or not.

Because Javon Belcher makes over a million dollars a year playing "professional football" , and has a child out of wedlock with some woman, and maybe he had a manic depressive episode, or was using some kind of illegal pharmaceutical (because sometimes that happens with professional football players), and now two people are dead.
And it's the gun culture (and the NRA). I see the logic that Costas and "Jason Whitlock" were using here.

Not really - the Reps had the option to cut any number of not particularly popular programs in 2004-6 and didn't even try.

One could imagine Republicans putting together a budget was serious cuts in some things, making the argument it is the only way we can afford other things.

Then when the Democrats/Media whine about it -

"Why would you rather fund cowboy poetry slams then the VA?"

etc...etc...etc...

D. CELOTEX II

At the direction of the DCI, surveillance was conducted of Jack Anderson and at various times his "leg men," Britt Hume, Leslie Whitten, and Joseph Spear, from 15 February to 12 April 1972. In addition to the physical surveillance, an observation post was maintained in the Statler Hilton Hotel directly opposite Anderson's office. See, this might be interesting if anybody in our leadership ever felt like getting around to making this argument or mentioning that reversing the current tax cuts don't get us anywhere near to taking care of the deficit, but that's apparently never going to happen.

I mean, they only have a limited amount of time available to speak over the months they've been discussing this, so it's not like they can just take 10 seconds to bring up this fact.

Later the top fifth or so of the picture had fine white horizontal lines across it. Then the sound started dropping from some channels. As more channels lost their sound, some switched to Spanish. I saw the shinebox scene from Goodfellas in Spanish! Narration accompanied the soundtrack on other channels, while yet on other channels I could only get the "sound" track (eg. car engines, theme music) without voices.

I wish I had seen the final death throes, but I left it on and when I came back a few minutes later it was stone cold dead. I wonder what its last seconds were like.
~~~~~~~
In the old days when the TV died the picture would just turn into static or a pinhole. My fortune cookie that said "You will live in interesting times" was right!
Ah, Jason Whitlock is an overweight African American.
There can't be real guilt for this young brother, Javon Belcher. The gun culture made him buy that gun, and shoot his girlfriend nine times.
He was misunderstood.
At some point, you would think adults in the African American community would speak up about the prevalence of black-on-black violence. Unlike "Law and Order" episodes, most poor black people are killed by other poor black people, unless it is a doctor performing an abortion.
Wait, didn't Bill Cosby say something about that and get criticized?
But it seems like if the meat is gonna hold its juices and therefore be good, then the drippings are purely fat, which doesn't make the gravy good. It's just aright... Not deeply brown and flavorful, like if I were to roast the shit out of the meat. Hubby says he prefers the meat to be good, so I got nothin' to bitch about, but just for my own standards.
entity known as cthulhu can change forms, and sometimes has as many as a
Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at December 02, 2012 10:35 PM (1OZSU)
In the Lovecraftian sense, Cthulhu generally looks the same, except when he's pureed by the propeller of a boat....after which he reconstitutes, looking much the same. He may extend an odd pseudopod at times, but the "resting state" is fairly consistent. You may be thinking of Azathoth, or Yog-Sothoth, or many of the other Great Old Ones. On the other hand, Cthulhu's testicles are not given much attention in the canon, in that humans beholding his awesome presence seldom express an immediate interest in sex play. [Those with some facility in Japanese may understand why the word "seldom" is used, instead of "never".]
284 Oh shit sorry, someone up the thread here said something like. "Reversing the Bush tax cuts would not come close to closing the deficit."
With all respect: the marginal rate decreases enacted in 2001 and 2003, as every marginal rate decrease ever actually enacted, actually increased revenue to the treasury. From 2001 to 2008, revenues increased by over 50%.
This is because when people keep more of their own money, they use it to grow the economy and therefore the tax base.
Theoretically, there are decreases in marginal tax rates which would also decrease revenue- such as decreasing rates to near zero. But in the real world, based on evidence we actually have, revenue increases as marginal tax rates fall.
So having "the rich" or any other group pay at a higher marginal rate would not only not close the deficit gap, but would likely increase the deficit as those who are taxed increasingly take their capital off the table, shrinking or regarding the growth of the tax base.
Class warfare is not only morally wrong, but it is also economically wrong.
And a second aside: the "Bush tax cuts" have been in effect for twelve years and were re-authorized by Democrats in 2010. They are no longer "tax cuts;" they are simply the current rates.
Okay, back to bed. Good night.
316 Kalneva, on gravy: try simmering some red wine and beef stock or bouillon, add sauteed onion and mushroom pieces, and then add the pitiable amount of excess cooked out of the beef. Then, thicken that if you must.
Others may disagree, but I find cornstarch alone as a thickener gives a sauce an unpleasantly slick glaze. Start with one tablespoon of flour completely dissolved in half a cup of water, stirred a little at a time into barely-boiling juices and stock. Then use a teaspoon of cornstarch, dissolved the same way, if more body is needed. I've never needed more than that.
This seems a particularly unseemly place to congratulate Robert on losing all that weight. Robert, take good care of yourself. That's a lot of stress you've gone through. 329 No. That's not all I have to say about it.
It is galling, it is enraging, when leftists mischaracterize our support for simple and low marginal tax rates as "greed" or as "protecting our friends on Wall Street."
We should make the education of the Boo Boos about the fundamental nature of prosperity a sound it's that we repeat at every opportunity.
Additionally, we should tell anyone who will listen that Democrats want high taxes in order to destroy prosperity and kill poor minorities.
Their racist tax policies, we ought to shout, are all about keeping minorities in chains like the KKK.
See what democrats do whenever we attack one of them who is dark-skinned or has a vagina? They immediately jump over defending their actions to accusing us of racism or sexism. They don't even bother to stop to consider the accusation's truth value!
We ought to do the same sort of thing on taxes. The only difference is, our position has the benefit of being demonstrably true, unlike anything they ever propose.
At first they would ignore us. Then they would laugh at us. Then they would be frightened of us. Then we would win.
358 @344- Yeah, dry as a bone. We're well overdue for a big dump of snow. I heard the mountains were only at about 40% of expected snowpack depth. Last time I drove by Blue Mesa the water level was so low that the islands were mere peninsulas. The river from Gunnison extended almost a mile into the flats at the inlet below the Lake City bridge. Gonna be rough next summer if things don't pick up.
You can be significantly depleted of potassium and have a normal serum (blood) potassium level. If your blood level of potassium is actually low, you are seriously depleted.
459 Ah, opening weekend for Star Wars. That carries a lot of emotion for me, and some of you likely remember this story. The last time I went anywhere with my father was when my parents tried to take my brother and me to it. It was playing in two theaters in LA, in Westwood and nearby Century City. The crowds were extraordinary. It made the news how people were turning out for this movie that hardly anyone had heard of in this era long before the web and cell phones took the concept of flash crowds from a Larry Niven story to reality.
There was a secret behind it but I wouldn't find out for almost twenty years.
We gave up on seeing Star Wars that night. It would have required at least a six hour wait. Instead we caught a double feature of Silver Streak and Norman, Is That You? The former was great and the latter verged on incomprehensible to a twelve year old in 1977.
The following week my father went into the hospital and was dead a couple of weeks later. He had a genetically based auto-immune disorder that had been destroying his heart for years and my folks didn't see any point in telling us kids about the diagnosis given five years before.
It turns out the George Lucas had realized well ahead of time the 20th Century Fox had no idea what Star Wars was going to be and took it upon himself to hire his own marketing guy who had a lot of connections in SF fandom and wanted to get into the business. This was Craig Miller. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003653/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
Craig had been an organizer of the 1972 Worldcon in Los Angeles (Anaheim really but it was considered an LA Con.) and still had a mailing list of all the attendees and participants. He also had the same data from the annual LOSCON, set during Thanksgiving Weekend. He organized a phone bank operation similar to a political campaign to get the word out to Southern California fans. They had to see this movie. Creating that crowd generating huge PR while Fox was still running 30 second ads on TV that went by so fast you had no idea what the movie was about other than things shooting at other things.
It worked wonderfully, as history records. Many years later I had joined the LASFS, the club that puts on the LOSCON, among other things. One day I was talking to Craig Miller and he told me the story of his flash crowd and I told my perspective on that weekend.
It was kind of a 'you won the battle but you killed my dog' moment.
Best GF ever took me to see Knopfler/Dylan in Chicago last month. "Blind Willie McTell" is particularly awesome.
I saw them in Philly on Nov. 19. He didn't play "Blind Willie McTell" but he did play "Mississippi".
That has become one of my favorite Dylan songs.
Here's a poor-quality audience recording from a year ago. I love this performance. Dylan's live band kicks ass six ways to Sunday, and this recording barely hints at what his live shows really sound like.
There was a time when Square said they were going to remake all of the PS1 entries for the PS2 but a regime change at the company killed that plan.
It's been an absurdly long time since those games were in general release. The 8 ad 16-bit entries have all been remade multiple times. If you eliminate the redundant data and use modern compression FFVII wouldn't even close to the upper limit for DS games and far below the 2 GB current max on 3DS carts. FFX was 4.2 GB on the DVD but could likely be reduced a fair bit since there is no need for redundant files to reduce load times, compression has improved a fair bit, and scaling to the 3DS screen would reduce the volume a bit.
That is what emulators are for.
I have just a few holes to fill in my PSP library and the FFIV remake is one of them, largely due to the additional material. I'll probably download a save game file to avoid the bulk of game I played twenty years ago. I tend to max out my characters in RPGs, so I'm less inclined to replay them.
Which may make it seem odd that I want remakes but it's more for the benefit of others I'd like to suggest the games to.
I really went overboard in FFVII, using the undersea base to give most of my characters 256 for all stats. When the time came, Sephiroph was struck down by Cloud so much as evaporated when Cloud vaguely waved his sword in his general direction.
The undersea base had a different monster for each stat and defeating it delivered a potion that gave you a +1 on that stat. They were fairly tough monsters, so you wouldn't want to hang out down there unless you were already at a high enough level to finish the game.
IIRC, there was Materia that increased your chances of getting the best items after a battle, and that was essential to making a decent pace on the upgrades.
It was something I tended to do while listening to the radio or an audio book, or watching TV if the game was on a portable device. I'm currently playing the post-game bonus level on an Android RPG called Aeon Avenger. Pretty much an 8-bit game with much better graphics but not a lot of animation. The two lead characters are already maxxed out at level 99 and the weakest is around level 86 IIRC. Yet the going is somewhat tough. The level has given me a number of armor and weapon upgrades and I suspect there is more of the same needed to reach the end successfully.
Google Play had a bunch of this company's games on sale recently. A lot of them were console games a long time ago in Japan but never had US releases. For a buck each they're good time killer to have on a phone.
I know I'm al little late to the party, but damn, when Stephen King says to stop reading after you are crying because the junkie and the boy and the lady in the wheelchair are finally HAPPY...Stop reading or you will be pissed of for a long time. At least a little break. My heart broke.
I don't know, I liked it. I think it was pretty much hinted at the entire time, that we would continue to repeat this cycle for a very, very long time. Some of the other things about the last three books bothered me though. I wish I had left off after Wizard and Glass.
Also, it seemed to be suggested that it was possible for him to somehow break out of that cycle, just not this time around.
Anyway, what Steven King SHOULD have done with the ending after the disclaimer was this:
"Roland entered the tower, whistled for a cab, and when it came near, the license plate said “fresh” and there were dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought “naw forget it, yo home to bel-air!” I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabbie “yo homes smell ya later!” Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there. To settle my throne as the prince of bel-air."
I think the biggest problem was that King did the later books more out of obligation than inspiration. If he'd been more focused early on and gotten through the story before his near death experience and alcoholism compelled him to write himself into the story (a thing which nearly always goes badly) he might have reached a more satisfying version of the eternal cycle.
I suspect he drew from Moorcock there, who was at the height of his output around the time King was in school and the first versions of the Dark Tower concept were developed. Throw in an overfertile imagination that pulled him in a million directions at once and the prospects aren't good for a multi-volume epic to retain its consistency.
653 646: I guess, but I was so glad about the ending with Eddie and Susannah and jake, then it was so sad. Also, I listen to them instead of reading, and it was a marathon, so I was overly attached. I listened to all of the books in about 10 days. Crazy, I may do it again...
I agree with just about everything in your post, although I don't know who Moorcock (now on my Read Later list). Writing himself in was a terrible gimmick, his "voice" was very different, and a bunch of other complaints I could make but there were still some very good scenes.
653
I completely understand. After reading Wizard and Glass again as an adult I knew this was not going to end well for anyone. The whole thing with Roland is that he always did what he thought was right and the good people around him always died, but he himself was never allowed to rest. So yeah, fitting.
Jake had very much grown on me by the end though and it was still very upsetting.
Posted by: Not Ready to Unsock at December 03, 2012 02:40 AM (BgIBZ)
659 At some point Roland forgets that he has done this before and merges with his younger self, chasing the Man in Black though the desert. He has nothing to remind him of past cycles and can never be free. Each cycle is a bit different. His companions, his ka tet may be drawn from an entirely different world than the previous time.
The Crimson King is just as much a prisoner, eternally driven to pull down the Tower as Roland is compelled to stop him. Possibly the only one who knows his past is Flagg but he is always having a good time, even when he gets killed for a while. So he is never going to give the game away.
Michael Moorcock. Highly influential British 'New Wave' writer from the 60s and onward. Utter lunatic but he is one of those writers whose influence is so broad that a lot of younger writers don't know him as the source they're lifting from. (Kind of like when Todd McFarlane would steal from other comic writers without being aware they were paying homage to classical literature, because McFarlane by his own admission has never read anything but comics.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorcock
Moorcock wrote a number of sword and sorcery and SF series and decided at some point that all of his protagonists were really the same eternally reincarnated person. And that it was possible for more than one incarnation to encounter another. They could even briefly merge to form a being of godlike power.
He is also like Philip Jose Farmer in that he has done a lot of takes on classical adventure fiction. In addition to the Eternal Champion characters there are a number of others characters who keep turning up, such as a woman named Una Persson. Sort of Eternal Sidekicks, although Persson usually is better informed than the lead character.
Dorian Hawkmoon. The closest to a conventional good guy in Moorcock's works.
Elric of Melnibone probably had a big influence on the Dungeons and Dragons rules, as it has a theme of good and evil being separate things from Law and Chaos. Elric's alignment varies throughout.
