| French Socialist Minister: We're Just Nationalizing Industries, Like Obama's Doing In the USndustry Minister Arnaud Montebourg, a member of the governing Socialist party, caused controversy last week when he said that the Indian company, which employs close to 20,000 people in France, should leave after it said it would have to close down a factory. The French government announced on Thursday that it could nationalize the factory in question, with backing from an unnamed businessman. ... Montebourg told CNBC after a meeting with trade unions in Paris: “Barack Obama's nationalized. The Germans are nationalizing. All countries are nationalizing. I've also noticed the British nationalized 6 banks.”Everyone seems to think Obama's a socialist except the American media. And how is all this socialism working out for Europe? Not well. The unemployment rate continued its steady rise, reaching 11.7% in October, up from 11.6% the month before and 10.4% a year ago. A further 173,000 were out of work across the single currency area, bringing the total to 18.7 million. Now, of the two Europes, which one are we following? That's right, the south, big spending, big borrowing. And soon, huge unemployment. We're really heading for something so severe that people will finally understand it to be a Depression. I suppose all I can do is laugh anymore. Comments1

Festively, and I repeat myself:
Oh, the takers' greed is quite frightful But the left finds it delightful And since we'll all be doomed anyhow Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn The spending is never stopping With spineless men always a-flopping Just drive it over that cliff now Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn When it finally all implodes We'll all pick it up from the ground And if we fix government all right We might keep it fiscally sound When the fires are slowly dying And the left is finally crying We can all say "We told you so" Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn Posted by: Locarno at November 30, 2012 06:04 PM (f7XGr) 8

By the way, I son't know if anyone noticed, but we've been cruising along at around 350k new unemployment claims per week, and had something like +170 less unemployed allegedly last month. The claims spiked by 100k (to 450) the week of the election and 'fell' to 420 something the following week and 391 (surely to be revised upward). Expect a negative job print for November. Nationalization how romantic. I had a buddy who had a nice shrimp boat operation in Africa back in a day or too..
He got a call from his partner one morning that the local gendarmes were there to seize the boats and the shrimp processing plant....by the time he got too the local bank they already had his stash all but a few clams he sent to a NY Bank gone. The respective fortunes of northern and southern Europe diverged further. In Spain, the jobless rate rose to 26.2% from 25.8% the previous month, and in Italy it rose to 11.1% from 10.8%.
In contrast, unemployment in Germany held steady at 5.4% of the labour force, while in Austria it fell from 4.4% to just 4.3%. Europe's Recessionary Collapse Beating Even Most Optimistic Expectations http://tinyurl.com/d92pqa8 French consumer spending in October was down 0.2%, compared to an unchanged reading in September, but far more troubling was that German retail sales imploded at a rate of 2.8%, the biggest monthly collapse in 4 years, and worse than even the most bearish forecast. I spent today working at my church's food pantry. It is necessary work but depressing.
Most of the people who come in are truly in need. We had several men today picking stuff up for their families. They were blue collar guys who probably used to do carpet-laying or house-framing. Very polite and grateful for peanut butter, bread, cereal, soup, etc. Several women asked if we had shampoo or dishwashing detergent. How sad is that? I stopped by CVS and bought some stuff tonight. Empire of Jeff, here is some serious advice. Wash it out with hot water and soap. Fill it with chlorine bleach and let it sit for 5 minutes. Empty the chlorine bleach out and then run it through the dishwasher on the heaviest setting (probably pots and pans) where the water is super-heated. You should be ok after that.

You have to remember, and he admitted it himself (proudly, because he's stupid), that Obama's attraction to Marxists/"Marxists" was aspirational. The American intellectual class identifies itself with "Marx," and Obama wanted prove himself a part of that class (while also pretending he's fuckin' DMX or something). He wasn't hanging out with, like, Louis Althusser (actual Marxist intellectual). He was hanging out with professors, professors' groupies, and with other politicians' and bankers' kids. They *identify* themselves with Marx(ism)--but what they actually know of Marx is minuscule, and that minuscularity is Marx as interpreted by Lenin and Mao, whose interpretations are fascist. *Political* "Marxism," if it isn't antipolitcal, *is* fascism. Obama is a non-intellectual conventional-wisdom representative of his *class*, not a Marxist. There's no way that imbecile could follow "Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right." By any rational standard, electric car drivers ought to pay more in taxes than everyone else, since they don't consume as much gas (and don't pay as much in gas taxes), but nevertheless damage the road at the same rate as everyone else.
but no, instead, electric cars are subsidized, while the rest of us driving "gas guzzlers" are punished with ever higher gas taxes Posted by: chemjeff at November 30, 2012 06:50 PM (cnS/d) 189
"157 re: "Obama's current economic model most closely
follows classic fascism; however, I think he is probably a Marxist at heart. He has spent a lot of time with Marxists." You have to remember, and he admitted it himself (proudly, because he's stupid), that Obama's attraction to Marxists/"Marxists" was aspirational. There's no way that imbecile could follow "Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right." But he knew that pretending to totally be down with that shit was important for his career. Don't believe the hype. Posted by: oblig. at November 30, 2012 06:41 PM (cePv So, your big idea is that Obama is too stupid to be a true Marxist (and unfortunately true Marxism has been corrupted by Lenin and Mao, and is "fascist" anyway.) Ok... Let's leave Hegelianism and Marx's "improvements" to it aside for a moment, and focus on something more fundamental. Define the following two terms: 1) authoritarian 2) totalitarian. Which matches Leftism more closely, keeping in mind it's cultural and social dimensions, as well as its aspirational political tendencies, in addition to its opportunistic economic "moderation." (And of course, Rand would remind us that A is A and Leftism is Leftism and everything that deviates too far from that is just stupid wanking.) If the left can't pull out a dictionary and follow along, they think everything is fine it's something new so nothing to see here.

Statists masquerading as Anarchists. Anarchists by definition cannot organize. I once had a conversation with a self-described "anarchist" who was agitating for higher taxes on the rich in order to pay for roads and bridges. I politely asked him "so, you are an anarchist who wants to give the government more money and power? Don't you believe in having no government at all?" To which he responded angrily with "don't judge me, bro! there's lots of different kinds of anarchists!" I think that the label "anarchist" is just something that the kool kids want to wear as some sort of rebellious label, but they have no idea what it really means. My guess is that many conservatives learned the art of knot-tying when they were good, upstanding young Eagle Scouts, like Paul Ryan. (And what a wonderful thought, Paul Ryan fastening a noose around Slow Joe's neck. In the most polite and respectful way imaginable, of course.) The old Eagle Scouts might be joined by present Eagle Scouts who are sharp enough to understand that the Free Shit Army is perfectly willing to sell later generations into slavery, as long as as the old socialist pigs get to feed that the trough. And the bodies of the old pigs would be taken down and properly disposed of, because conservatives do not leave litter in the streets. Posted by: Donna V. at November 30, 2012 07:32 PM (BStAJ) 284

We're really heading for something so severe that people will finally
understand it to be a Depression. I suppose all I can do is laugh anymore. Embrace the Schadenfreude. Nothing's going to be funnier than listening to all the Obama voters screeching their heads off about their lost jobs, health insurance, Pell Grants, etc. We'r already starting to hear it as The One treads all over his own dick on a daily basis. I know we're all on the same boat, but I take my inspiration from a passage in Down to a Sunless Sea, a post-apocalyptic novel by David Graham. After all the nukes go off, an airliner finds it can't land because the entire earth is blanketed in radioactive fallout. As the airliner crew radios around, they come into contact with a Strategic Air Command's EC-135 Looking Glass, one of which was kept aloft 24 hours a day, full of officers who could take over the armed forces in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack. The EC-135 is just out about out of fuel, and the air force pilot tells the airliner pilot that he has a bet with the general on board that he can get the EC-135 up to Mach one before they auger into the ground. They're going to use their last fuel to see if they can do it. "Wish us luck!" the air force pilot says as he signs off. So laugh, Ace. In 500,000 years nobody will care the teeniest bit about any of this. Posted by: Llarry at November 30, 2012 07:37 PM (ymCXi) 302

I'd been on a long distance biking trip in my 20s with a half bottle of white gas left over that I'd used for my ultra-small pack stove. When I returned to my apartment and wanted to do a cookout with my roommate, sure enough, we had charcoal, but no lighter fluid. Resourceful soul that I am, I thought I'd use some of the white gas--same thing, right? 287 goes from Great Falls, MT to Port Arthur, TX. And, yes, it is a major truck route because the Feds, with all that stimulus money, cannot figure out that it is the most direct route from Dallas to Denver, and should have an interstate there. As for the deathtrap, it's usually the passenger cars that cause the carnage. Especially in construction zones.

The stock was just collateral for the TARP loans. The banks bought their stock back. It was a temporary program. Sure, there were lots of flaws with it, but it did what it was needed to do (stop the debt-driven run on the banks), and most of the money has been paid back, and likewise most of the stock has been returned.
Nationalization has an actual meaning. It means that the government runs the business. TARP did not do that. Posted by: JohnJ at November 30, 2012 08:20 PM (Tt6ky) 413

Cant hire, cant fire, cant divest or invest in human capital = unemployment and stagnation. Now we have disgruntled 20-somethings in the US with an entitlement mentality who cry about making 80k per year and not getting promotions every 9 months. On top we have the NRLB conspiring in the background working with SEIU on strategies to organize "service" (e.g., white collar) workers. Ace: "I suppose all I can do is laugh anymore."
And indeed, Ace, that IS one way to act the fool. Why do you bother ... and why do I? The fact is that every since arbitrage or enlistment of an asset to the public weal is a 'form' of socialism. Thus, by that measure, every single American president was (and is) acting "socialist". Now, I grant the young froggie minister was not referring to anything particularly close to debate-worthy, so was probably referring to the auto bailout, or to tarp, or to the STIM's PPP aspects -- though certainly not to health care insurance reform, because the Obamacare model does not socialize medicine any more than American medicine was already socialized by previous presidents and Congresses (which brought about Medicare, Medicaid and the requirement that every state require hospitals to admit patients through their Emergency departments); or, perhaps the tadpole WAS referring to that, but was simply misinformed. And IF misinformed, then one is justified in pointing to Ace as part of 'Team Misinformation' in this regard. Posted by: Rex the Wonder God at December 01, 2012 03:24 AM (21TJo) 439
I'll sit and watch as the liberals, leftists, socialist and communist/Communist attempt to lie their way out of the complete and total phuc up they are engineering.
Once the country hits rock bottom, everyone severely and badly affected and in dire straits and the socialist and their media buddies are still talking up Obama and the true joy of being alive in a post America era people will wake up and wonder why there ain't no coffee to smell, discover what fools they were and take steps to insure Obama doesn't get a fourth term as POTUS. let it burn, they cannot hide the fact they were playing with fire when the country has burned down. Once the republicans become socialist democrats in all but name they will burn with the democrats. let it fall apart. COFFEE mug used as E/urinal. Do not wash give as gift to any socialist, liberal democrats you might know and smile. Posted by: HEP-T at December 01, 2012 11:49 AM (0Aw0p) 440
While i agree that the US will likely experience a an extremely painful lesson, possibly by the shock of experiencing a depression; I'm not ready to embrace fatalism just yet. The last minute save does occur, and if the opportunity never emerges, then better to go down fighting til the end than to allow hopelessness and passivity to rule the day.
