| Overnight Open Thread (11-28-2012)Can you judge a human book by its cover? Well when it comes to faces, people can - albeit not perfectly but definitely better than chance. Several years ago, a woman named Brook White appeared on the reality TV competition show American Idol. White was 24 years old, blond, and strikingly pretty. When she sang her song, "Like a Star," she struck a familiar chord among some viewers. White said nothing about her religion, but Mormons, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, were certain that she was one of their own. And people don't just have 'Mordar', they've also been proven to have 'gaydar' and even 'crimidar': At Cornell University, psychologist Jeffrey Valla and his colleagues set out to test just how readily people can spot criminals based on facial appearance alone. They prepared close-cropped, expressionless, facial photos of clean-shaven Caucasian men in their twenties and asked volunteers to identify the murderers, rapists, thieves, forgers, drug dealers, and so on. Men and women alike could distinguish convicts from noncriminals with above-chance accuracy, but, interestingly, not violent offenders from nonviolent ones.
The Sad State of Free Speech in the UK Basically there really isn't any since almost any non-trivial thing you say could possibly be 'offensive' to someone. And that's now illegal. Hunt master who called black saboteur a f****** w** is fined £3,000 (Here I assume he said 'fucking wog' but since no source ever printed the actual statement who knows.) Christian demoted at work after writing on Facebook that he opposed gay marriage in church You can also be prosecuted for insulting tweets but only if you're popular. The UK Independence Party is set to become the 3rd largest party in the UK but just being a member is considered by authorities enough to make you unfit to be a parent. Tory Students at Oxford ask for legal protections due to continual persecution How could you possibly advocate a political position in the UK when often just expressing it is enough to get you prosecuted? But of course certain kinds of actual hate speech are just fine and dandy. The Mindset List for the Class of 2016
Also: OMFG Kids Today Are all Psychopaths!!!! Uh no. It's another bullshit study hyped by the media. Supposedly Lawrence Kasdan is going to write and produce one or two of the Star Wars pre/sequels. Too tired so phoning it in for realz...... Gary Oldman: The most non-typecast actor Teh Tweet! Yahoo group. That is all. The Biggest Victims Of Socialized Healthcare Are Babies
A recent firestorm has erupted over a baby, in the care of the U.K.’s National Health Service, was left “to die like an abandoned animal.” The doctors and nurses repeated exclaimed that the child was fine and treated the child’s mother as a nuisance, with one doctor even ” ‘glared’ and ‘barked’ at her, giving her a look of ‘utter contempt’.” Whether is was incompetence or sheer indifference, this case goes far beyond simple medical malpractice. Emergency treatments that were ordered took up to 22 hours to be implemented. The obvious need the child had for real medical care was obvious: A passing member of the public, who had been visiting another child, went up to Mrs Stevenson and told her: ‘Your child cannot breathe.’ But at 11am, a cardiology registrar recorded Hayley as ‘stable’. Paula says: ‘We were very upset that a complete stranger could see that Hayley was in difficulty but the medical professionals merely said that she was fine.’” The mother badgered and did everything she could to save her child even going so far as to ” bribe a nurse with £100 shopping voucher to get them to care for her daughter better.” Alas, the option of quality and affordable healthcare has been swept aside by the NHS, which ironically was meant to provide quality and affordable healthcare. Sadly, infants, as with the elderly, are more likely to be the targets for rationed healthcare, or healthcare denied, since “ethicists” consider them to have less worthy lives. In the case of infants, “ethicists” are outright saying that they should not be considered legal persons, and parents and doctors should be free to dispose of them as they wish, to the point of saying: “The moral status of an infant is equivalent to that of a fetus in the sense that both lack those properties that justify the attribution of a right to life to an individual.” The two “ethicists,” Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva of the University of Melbourne, whose full monstrous journal article can be read here, are clearly blazing the path towards limiting the rationed healthcare to those more capable of providing for themselves, while taking it from those who can’t. Yet again, the irony of socialized medicine, which was purportedly meant to provide for the weakest amongst us who can’t provide for themselves, actually being used to restrict and deny healthcare to those who really need it, is as stark as it is sad. This should be under comedy, but it was the NY Slimes leading story today;
California Finds Economic Gloom Starting to Lift http://tinyurl.com/bnfxo7d After years of spending cuts and annual state budget deficits larger than the entire budgets of some states, this month the independent California Legislative Analyst’s Office projected a deficit for next year of $1.9 billion — down from $25 billion at one point — and said California might post a $1 billion surplus in 2014, even accounting for the tendency of these projections to vary markedly from year to year. A reason for the change, in addition to a series of deep budget cuts in recent years, was voter approval of Proposition 30, promoted by Gov. Jerry Brown to raise taxes temporarily to avoid up to $6 billion in education cuts. “The state’s economic recovery, prior budget cuts and the additional, temporary taxes provided by Proposition 30 have combined to bring California to a promising moment: the possible end of a decade of acute state budget challenges,” the report said. On Lawrence Kasdan writing new Star Wars, now the current rumor is he's not actually writing anything for the new sequel trilogy but might instead be writing a spin-off of some sort. God damn it, I had a long post that went poof because I'm using a different computer and my name wasn't loaded. HEre's what you need to know. Obama doesn't care two shits about higher taxes. That shit was simply a wedge he used to get elected. Period. My fear is that Zero gives the pubs what they want as serious concessions on tax rates. Pubs in turn give zero everything he wants as far as raising the debt ceiling and the "grand bargain." Pubs need to make zero own this shit. Agree to raise taxes big time, even higher than he wants on the rich, million and above. But say, we went overboard in what we are offering. It's on the table as long as we see some proposal for serious cuts. There won't be any. Then we all go back to clinton rates. MAKE THEM FUCKING OWN IT. After all, these are CLINTON rates. Make Americans feel the pain. This is the fucked up economy that he has wrought. The free shit society is expensive. Time to pay the fucking credit card. My oldest son is in "the class of 2016". He's got his flaws and problems (as any 18 year old does), but he is really a pretty good kid. And having known some of his friends and peers for years, a lot of them are pretty good kids too. The world changes in the superficial ways (like how we move our bags in an airport?), but people don't change that much. They are conditioned in behavior by the culture that surrounds them, but they can also be taught to resist. In small ways, I try to teach my sons how to resist the culture by challenging the silly assumptions that seem built into much of pop culture. It's a long term guerrilla war, and that's how you have to wage it. Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch is not Santa Claus at November 28, 2012 10:23 PM (Md8Uo) 69

Being 7 hours long it gets a lot more in depth than the recent film. Also has Smiley's People but I have not read or seen it yet so I can't give you an opinion on that. Link: http://bit.ly/U3HQqn Posted by: Not Ready To Unsock at November 28, 2012 10:50 PM (BgIBZ) 195

We just adopted a rescue dog, very cute little Schipperke mix, approximately 3 years old, and he's been doing a good job of whining randomly in the middle of the night. Trying to be patient, as the poor guy was 1 day from being euthanized, but I've been pretty groggy the past few days... And then, of course, he sleeps like a champ in my office all day long, despite my efforts to keep him awake! Re: the face thing. It may well be that certain genotypes that predispose people toward homosexuality or criminality or Mormonism or whatever also result in a particular phenotype. Funny thing about gaydar/gayface -- it does rather put the lie to the thought that homosexuality is purely a conscious choice. If that were true, there would be too much randomness to it.

Posted by: logprof at November 28, 2012 11:18 PM Yeah, "The Big Dirty" was ok, but it didn't capture the spark of seasons 1-5. "Countdown to Liquor Day" was a return to form. Thanks. I'm a neurotic clock watcher. I wake up a few times during the night, then I keep looking at the clock to see what time it is, and how much time I have till I have to get up. Posted by: nerdygirl at November 28, 2012 11:20 PM (r3uU6) --One of the most useful Christmas gifts I've ever received was a cheap clock from Radio Shack that has no lighted display; you just hit a button and it literally "tells" you the time. The red-display digital clock I had used before was too bright. I have had the Radio Shack clock for almost 16 years and only have needed to change the batteries once. Apparently it not only outlasted the marriage of the relative who gave it to me but it may outlast Radio Shack as well. Speaking of all of these bad dreams, I used to have dreams that I was in Nethack. They were extremely lonely and frightening. Very dark. And always ended in one of those situations where you're about to be murdered violently, often by something that bears little resemblance to a human being, and you are desperately trying to wake yourself up so you don't have to experience the pain. Of course, I was never able to wake up but it never really hurt either, just an uncomfortable sickening feeling and then I woke up.

This guy is a GIANT DICK. He singlehandedly killed the Republican Party in San Diego. If you really want to know what happened to California, it's assholes like Baldwin who started in 1990 and ultimately turned the GOP there into a fringe lunatic party that actually thinks they can get rid of homosexuals in the state of California. The thing about the CPAP is that, at first, it is real disconcerting and panic inducing. I mean you turn the damn thing on and air is being forced down your throat. I thought I was gonna go crazy. Once you get used to it and actually sleep, it is amazing. My sleep apnea was real bad. Doctor said that I probably hadn't had REM sleep in years. Posted by: Truck Monkey at November 28, 2012 11:32 PM (jucos) For me, it wasn't so much a panic issue -- I'd been SCUBA diving for years, which I found incredibly restful and soothing. It was the feeling that I'd been kicked in the chest when I woke up in the morning. It took more than a month to get used to that. Then, almost 10 years afterward, I have another appointment with the Stanford-associated sleep specialist MD.....and he casually mentions that -- out of hundreds of patients -- I've got the highest prescribed pressure he's ever written.... It's outlasted any of the others I've owned. I've had some I held together with a dozen zip ties. It's a pain in the ass, but the cardiologist said I probably wouldn't have survived the virus that caused my heart condition without both the side-effects of the condition (resistance to oxygen deprivation) and the treatment (enhanced breathing compensating for reduced oxygen transfer). So there you go, the sucky condition saved my life. The gear will be a PITA in bed, BTW. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at November 29, 2012 12:17 AM (bxiXv) 413

My 83 y.o. father has progressive supranuclear palsy. Bro emailed me today saying: "That
said, he is losing the mental fight. Higher level reasoning is definitely being impacted and he is having more difficulty putting together multiple ideas at one time etc. I would not be surprised if in six months it is very difficult - if not impossible - to have much of a conversation with him." We didn't have the best relationship but I never went hungry and didn't have to pay for any schooling through grad school. I'm "retiring" next year to, in part, work on a music project I've neglected for 20 years. Unfortunately, if I'm successful, he'll never know, even if he's still around. You know, in some ways, dying of old age (including diseases/conditions that go with old age) is in some ways sadder than dying by other causes. It reminds us that not only are we mortal, but there's nothing we can do about it. Posted by: SFGoth at November 29, 2012 12:19 AM (fW3/w) 417

re: Pavement Patty Years ago (like in my teens) I was out having fun...We were living it up out at the bottom of the dam and I walked with my pal in the dark away from the group so she could go pee. All of a sudden she went splat. I helped her up and walked her back to the group. Mind you, we had both had the same amount to drink/etc/etc....When we came to the light I looked at her and 1/2 of her face had scrape marks/bloodied-ness. I decided to let that go. She asked us how she looked, and opened her mouth and all of her front teeth were either gone or chipped off/jaggily-like. I swear she looked like a fucking pirate. It took all of my might not to laugh out fucking loud at her. You know in the cartoons when they'd blacken out missing teeth?... That was funny in my head then it depressed me cuz if Mitt had really said that he would've won the youth vote. So TFG can't work an iPhone and she doesn't know what a Wii is. I have sorta a Pavement Patty tale -- There was a neighborhood pub that my wife and I hung out and our next door neighbor did too. It was close enough to walk or bike back from.
I get a 1 am phone call from on of the other regulars saying that the neighbor is all scratched up and could he bring him by. Sure I said. So he soon delivers Pete and his bike to my house. Pete has scratches from head to toe. It seems he kept climbing onto his bike and putting his feet into the stirrups, then would lose his balance and fall over cuz he couldn't extract his feet in time. Sixteen times. A very persistent fella. So we washed his scrapes and mercurochromed the shit out of him. He was real grateful the next day when he sobered up. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. True. I recall an interview where talked about being a workaholic. Reminds me. Rita Rudner had a variety show on the BBC for on series. Sketch comedy and musical numbers. (She was a Broadway dancer before going into standup comedy.) One sketch has her and her husband browsing in a video store for something to watch that night. It seems everything thefind has Michael Caine in it. Then while looking in the French section they not everything has Gerard Depardeiu in it and wonder if Gerard Depardeiu is French for Michael Caine. Posted by: Waterhouse at November 29, 2012 01:34 AM (8kyw4) Oh, don't get me wrong. I thought it was fantastic for certain reasons. Action? Yep. Boobs? You betcha. It still seemed clearly like a standard 70s B-movie crime film, though...just starring Michael Caine. Actually, I just checked. It had a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 89%, so maybe my rader is a little off...or those reviewers properly appreciate the right combination of action, boobs, and Michael Caine. Posted by: MrCaniac at November 29, 2012 01:39 AM Really? I hadn't heard that. Normally with such things, I'd say, "no way", but, the series had a solid basis to make a good movie from. However they'd probably stuff it up, so it's just as well. The late 60's, early 70's vibe is a huge part of the appeal, but in the right hands, it could be updated as a serious piece. Casablanca was a B production, too. It was sometimes advantageous to be in that situation. The studio bosses were less likely to interfere. Another example is Rod Stewart's Maggie May. It was his third solo album after two failures and his label was going to drop him if he didn't produce a hit. Although the album would later have several very successful tracks it didn't get any traction early on. A DJ in Cleveland really liked the B side of the single Reason to Believe, although the song in question had nearly been left off the album because Stewart felt it wasn't that good. The DJ put the song in heavy rotation and it became a national and international hit within a few weeks Posted by: epobirs at November 29, 2012 01:59 AM (kcfmt) 484

Oh my fucking Christ. I have not watched any "modern" sitcoms. Probably Seinfeld was the last one on a major network. I just accidentally saw a snippet of something or other. It's so bad there are no words. People still watch this crap, you guys! It's no wonder we lost! They're all retarded! And don't fucking tell me that "retarded" is a verboten word. Look it up, instead. Appropriate.

Oh, and Sunny in Phil doesn'tcount, cuz it's not stoopid. It is, but on purpose, and it's a very nuanced commentary on society. No sarc tag. Really. For reals.

The Dude, what channel is that on? I mean what network. You can see how old I am. Holy shit, I am so not liking all this new shit. WTF is "The Middle" about? It better be better than Modern Family, because I hate that shit. ALL my friends tell me how much I'll like it, and they are sooo wrong. I HATE it! Everything that I hate about society, wrapped up in one sit-com. The only good thing about it is Al Bundy. (But alas.) Luckily Peg is still available on SOA, and she's gotten smart!
Posted by: kalneva at November 29, 2012 02:17 AM (S+/pH) 492
@445 - Nah, Mitt probably would have paid Shigeru Miyamoto to come play Pole Position with the kid. In fact, given the way that he handled stories about things that he's done for people, he probably DID do that, and we'll find out about it two years from now... In 1978 the first anime I ever saw without English audio dubbing was Getter Robo R. There were no subtitles either as this was a part-time Japanese UHF station in L.A. But still, this show was far cooler than anything shown on the US networks.
It was actually the second series, replacing the original mecha with more refined versions, and also replacing the fat guy who'd been killed off at the end of the previous series with another fat guy. You gotta have a fat guy to pilot Bear/Poseiden. That is the rule. Some of you might have seen a US version edited from various episodes into a feature length movie called Starvengers. I finally, after looking for many years, found a torrent of both series. So I'm going to go relive my childhood a bit. Except with subtitles this time.
