Hey, Where Is The Conservative Side of the Creative Media?

I've been asking this too a lot.

Actually I sort of think this is barking up the wrong tree. A tree near the right tree, but still the wrong tree. I don't really love political messages in entertainment of either stripe. I roll my eyes at both.

Still, it's near the right tree.

Well to be fair using the story telling medium to convey a "moral" is arguably as old as story telling itself. Expecting to find your stories "moral free" is like ordering a double whopper with cheese and being aghast it contains...hamburger.

Some problems can't be solved. This is one of them.

Well HP, I wrote a whole dissertation on the very topic. Now away from the shameless plug. My ultimate point was that.

1. Entertainment has real world value, that does fluctuate yes, but it is there. Good entertainers have made a good living in any era even the dark ages. We should treat it like it has real value.

2. Along those lines we should not necessarily encourage our youth from getting into the field, but stop actively discouraging them from doing so like we do now.

Just so you know, I don't think that being conservative of mind precludes you from being able to compose or tell a good story, or good music. I think our own prejudices against the worth of such pursuits is a far greater barrier.

53 The upfront costs for a major media outlet are ridiculously prohibitive. You know what my suggestion would be for the greatest bang for the buck? Start up a video game studio. Do everything from casual games to the huge franchise epics. Video games are far more interesting than most movies or books these days. Not to mention that for the franchise games, you're looking at 40-50 hours of gameplay. You can work a lot into that. As stupid as I think setting the new Assassin's Creed during the Revolutionary Way is, and wow do I think it is, I am fascinated that the trailers portray the revolutionaries as the heroes.

Andrew Klavan is going after a huge gap in the YA market by writing works that are aimed more for guys. Conservative story lines that are also exciting to read.

I do think the rise of indie publishing and the slow progress on making indie movies more widely available will help. Go around the gate keepers, not through them.

61 It's the appeal to emotion. That's what storytelling is.

The moral of the story is what hits you right where it counts. We have real-life stories to tell of people and families who've lost everything thanks to the government. I saw one today. Why not make it a point to put these on the evening news? And yes, Fox News, I'm looking at you. And speaking of Fox News, why isn't that on at 6 pm every night on every local Fox channel?

We must recapture the media and turn it back towards the average American again. Make the government bureaucrat the enemy and we'll start winning elections again. Hell, we wouldn't even have to make anything up to do it, it could be a reality show.

The case was seen as largely symbolic
because the defendants, most of whom live in the United States, are all
outside Egypt and are thus unlikely to ever face the sentence. The
charges were brought in September during a wave of public outrage in
Egypt over the amateur film, which was produced by an Egyptian-American
Copt.

I wonder how much of that is because of the nature of the wars, specifically the occupations.

We fought tooth and nail for 4 years to take territory back from the Nazis and the Japs. By contrast, we beat the Iraqi Army and the Taliban in about a month, combined.

Have there been good war movies about occupations vs. terrorist insurgencies? Maybe "Zulu", but that's the only one that comes to mind.

People are living in fucking fantasy land.

Been reading Mill's essay on Representative Democracy. He repeatedly, to the point of annoyance, says society will not preserve such a government if they are not capable or willing to do so. It's so simple, but it's so true. The people in this country may or may not be capable of being citizens, but they are not willing to do so. Any story you come up with that deals with the truth isn't going to be pleasant and isn't going to be heard.

There are a fair number of conservative themed movies that do quite well
at the box office but they usually don't beat the audience over the
head with the political message.

I think Jason Reitman's works are quite conservative, to the point that I don't comprehend how he is such a hit with the ever so hip crowd. Young Adult, in particular, is utterly, utterly brutal towards Charlize Theron's character. It's the married guy about to have a kid who is the sympathetic one, not her.

104 The Rock/77:

I am so glad you asked. Tom Cotton is the newly elected representative for the 4th Congressional District in Arkansas. He is from the same area roughly as Bill Clinton.
His grandpa was a WWII combat vet. His dad was a Vietnam combat vet. His dad owns a cattle farm in a rural area. He was a jock in HS and some college (not a fucking cheerleader) and comes from a regular, blue collar family. He has a very slight tinge of a Southern accent, but it is barely noticeable.

He was accepted to Harvard Law and was in the top of his class. I believe he also spent some time at the Claremont institute. Through and through educated in conservate ideas and principles.

9-11 happened in his last year of law school. When he got out of school, he worked, paid off his debts and fulfilled his obligation to clerk fora 5th Circuit court of appeals judge.

After that, he enlisted in the Army. They wanted to put him in JAG and he insisted on infantry, front line combat duty. He served two tours, one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

While he was in Iraq, he wrote a letter to the NY Times slamming them for releasing classified info about a terrorist financing program that GWB's administration was using. He called for the authors and I think editors to be thrown in jail.

The NYT (of course) didn't print the letter. But John Hindraker at PowerLine did, and Tom Cotton has been a legend since.

He destroyed the vote, and I will bet anyone a $1000 that he will unseat Mark Pryor and become the next US Senator from Arkansas in 2014. I know the state well and used to work for Pryor when he was AG.

Then, God willing, Marco Rubio will pick Mr. Cotton as his running mate once Mr. Rubio sews up the R nomination for 2016.

115 101/Hannity's:

That is a great question. I'm not exactly sure because it's never happened. That is one fact I know for sure. But since exchange rates float, and if you need oil you need to buy it in dollars, then this creates essentially an artificial demand for the reserve currency, since I need to buy all the shit I need for my country in said currency and therefore must have some of my reserves in that currency as well.

It further means that other countries will enforce the stability of the dollar so that they can make sure they can get what they need and will have ample dollar liquidity available (see the Fed's action with the Euros).

This is not to say that we cannot have inflation, I fully expect gold to hit $5k. but in normal supply/demand markets, we should be getting there soon anyway I would guess.

It is just the hyperinflation we won't see unless everyone gives up on the dollar or else the whole world apart from us goes up in smoke.

In other words, out of all the world's currencies, the dollar shall be the last to fall, imho.

You know what's an intensely pro-life movie? Kill Bill. I am not kidding about this. The entire plot is about Kiddo's revenge on those who she believes killed her child. Budd says point blank that she deserves her revenge.
Kiddo's speech to Bill about how when she found out she was pregnant everything became about her child is shocking in how unapologetic it is that being a mother is the single most important thing to Beatrix. The whole freaking point of Kill Bill is that a mother will do anything, absolutely anything, for her child.

There is a contradiction between values of "responsibility" and "loving your neighbour as yourself".

"Responsibility" means that you take on your own burden first, and when done with that you consider helping others out.

"Loving your neighbour as yourself" does not allow for this. It ends up as a weapon, used by bums to demand that you love them as you love yourself.

172 Conservative creativity is not simply political, but a values message. It can be of family, God, economic prosperity, or something along those lines.

You know art that is not a crucifix in urine, but maybe a mosaic of American family.

Why do we not see this? Because it is not cool to be conservative or think conservative. Because our society has been taught from an early age that conservatives are angry old white racists, sexiists, homophobes wanting to return to the days of slavery.

173
Back when I was very little, my grandparents had a book called "The Managing Hen and the Floppy Hound," that I loved and had them read to me until they were sick of it. I recently bought a copy to read to my nieces. The story is pretty simple:
There was once a hen on a Appalachian farm that ruled the roost, watching out forvarmints and keeping the other chickens in line. One day the owner of the farm bought a puppy, who was supposed to be a watchdog but was too young to do much except get in everyone's way and hinder them from working. One day, there was a big storm that blew the hen away. When the puppy went exploring in the woodsafterwards, he found a fox getting ready to eat the hen. He fought the fox and won, then brought the hen back to the farm, where the owner told him he was a good dog and he and the hen made friends. The end.
The book doesn't mention the government at all, but it a fundamentally conservative book: It told my five-and-six-year-old self that the world was a dangerous place, that in order for a community to survive everyone had to work or otherwise contribute, that fighting meant hurting and being hurt, that fighting was sometimes necessary to defend the weak, and that with diligence and courage you will survive.
That is sort of story that we need to be telling - ones that encourage our root values, not just ones thataddress particular contemporary political issues (though those do have a place as well, I think).

187 Look, right after the election I had a nice and heated discussion with my sis about why she voted Obama. Her main reason: she didn't trust Romney because he changed his mind too often.

Let that sink in for a second. She voted for a guy who's promises come with expiration dates. I pointed more than a few of those out (Gitmo, gay marriage, the debt being "unpatriotic"); no reaction at all.

I hate to be this pessimistic, but most voters out there are ignorant to an extreme. None of them know how deep in the shit we really are, how much worse it is getting, and they don't care. When problems do hit, they'll blame Bush or "the corporations." I've asked every single person who said the housing crash was caused by Bush to tie any specific policy of his to the crash. None could, but they keep on saying it.

I don't see how liberty can continue in such a place. It breaks my heart and makes me despair of my own future. But there it is. Being on the right side doesn't mean we'll end up on the winning side.

219 Technology today means that for about $10,000 you could buy the basic digital video and editing equipment to start producing amateur films. Thanks to the internet, you can even distribute them.

Conservatives need to start there, producing short and well made web films that reflect conservative values. As others have pointed out, it's not about blatant messaging, but the subtle messages. It's whether or not you make a Sarah Palin joke or an Obama joke when the script calls for political humor; it's about showing individual responsibility and respect for tradition and self restraint instead of narcissism and self loathing.

225 Do we need the creative stuff for entertainment, or to win converts?
If entertainment, start here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/cc5rdl3 (I would add "Dr. Zhivago" (1965), surely still one of the greatest movies ever made! Klaus Kinski has one of the best lines in the film, "I am the only free man on this train!". And if you like girls, you'll be happy watching either Christie or Chaplin.)
Converts? We need to come to grips with the fact that some of the Commies may never, ever come around. Forced interbreeding? Starvation? Practically, I don't see either of those strategies working at all. The problem then becomes one of how to keep them from being a major problem. Fortunately, the solution is Limited Government. If they keep needing handouts, and the gummint stops giving them, their best hope then becomes a 1-way bus ticket to SanFran. For the rest, helmet cams and running war heroes may be the ticket, and a very active offense on the whole Commie stable. Why let a Kerry even run for dogcatcher after his sorry, sad pile of s**t he laid off on Congress back in the day? Ted Kennedy? DWI patrols on the island. Some of their marijuana Messiahs? Black bag ops to lace their weed with 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate. Not fair? Hey! They're the ones so into drugs!

Are you someone who wants to make movies? Try releasing a movie outside of the Hollywood machine. You will not be seeing that movie or show in theaters, television, or cable. You might get lucky and have Netflix stream it.

260 Having enough stories out there is one thing. Many of the greatest stories of all time are conservative.

Harry Potter, for example, is very conservative in its worldview, but there's also the matter of plugging this in to the greater world at large. The greatest influence of HP may be in the years to come, but we have to not only create the works, but relate them to more around us.

264 We need to be in the culture to win the argument.

We need insiders who understand how you make conservative arguments in movies using universal themes. John Nolte had a series about "when liberal movies were good" that should be required reading for understanding how the lefty ideology snuck into what was a conservative industry in a conservative nation.

It's not just an argument about "nudity, sex, ack!" and *violence* and surface level bullshit, but an argument about ideology, themes, and all that.

Someone on NRO had a point recently about how Judd Apatow's movies are really very conservative, about guys deciding to grow up and accept responsibility, just for instance.

Hollywood and TV is where the argument is won and we are not even there playing. That's why we are losing.

Also in colleges, but that's a different post.

304 Okay, I just read the article ace linked. So, he's talking about the left winning stories. And the story that the left is winning is not necessarily a bunch of movie and tv show stories that peddle liberal ideology, it's the telling of American history.

Anyone who bought in an way the new American history as peddled by the left in US History classes in colleges across the nations knows that THE central story of America goes like this: "Slavery, freedom of slaves, Jim Crow, civil rights, racism -- what are you going to do about it?"

That's it. that's the story historians teach, that's the story every pop cultural product (created by students of those history classes( tells in one way or another and that is the argument Obama won.

We need to reverse Will Ayers and all go and get PhD's in education, history, and teaching credentials and go take back American history.

308 We need reality tv. People love that stuff, and we can come up with people that point out how conservative values improve your life.

For example, there's a program called Gold Rush. It's about guys that go up to Alaska every year and mine for gold. One of the guys is a young kid, I think 18 now, that is mining his grandfather's old claim. He's very impressive. You can watch him learning how to run a crew and how to deal with some of the less scrupulous miners in the area. I can't say that he's a Repub, but he certainly has the behaviors we would like to see in others.

On the other hand, there's Hard Core Porn, set in a pawn shop in Detroit. If you ever wanted more of the Obamaphone lady, the show is full of them. People coming in and demanding money for things that are basically crap.

People love stories and we are not doing a good job of reaching them. The best investment for the party right now is to find those storytellers and get them on tv and in the movies.

333 @325

"It's not really a separate issue. America slavery and racism are seen as one instance of Northern/white oppression over the Southern/colored rest of the planet."

In American Colleges....cultural/sociology studies have focused on the idea that it is impossible for minorities to be Racist. They were able to accomplish this MindFuck manipulation on the population based on the idea that Money=Power therefore whoever has the Money is Racist by default.

The problem here is that true Racism is learned, and is defined by action not by genetics or bank account status.

I asked a Psychology Professor friend of mine who spews this shit once, "If Black People were the Majority and were Wealthy relative to the White Minority population, would they then be Racist?"

He replied, "No...because the White Population still has the Wealth of History and knowledge that would need to be overcome, before the tables could be turned."

So they have us coming and going!

right! This view is sort of based on a neo-Marxist standpoint theory.

where the underclass who is oppressed and deprived of their labor actually has greater access to reality than the upper class that controls the means of production and exploits the "workers" for their labor.

IN this view b/c blacks and other minorites have been oppressed for so long they have a cultural access to truth (these people are not relativists) that white people simply do not and will not have until the means of production is taken away from us. Therefore whatever black people perceive whites to be is true, not racist, whereas what whites say about blacks (and other minorities) is done in an effort to control their labor.

Money people on the right won't pony up because of the risk factors.

The only way to eliminate risk is by adding sure value commodities.

Such as established movie stars, directors, studios, etc...

which is 90% prog.

So to get them involved, you have to toss out any kind of center-right or non-pc message.

At that point, you're just producing you're peeing in the shallow end of the Hollywood pool and guaranteed to lose your arse.

Trust me. Only person who probably knows this gamut better than me is Beck.

So until financiers understand the long-game of culture wars, we lose the game.

And rightie money is more interested in profits that changing culture.

----------

So then I guess we need to focus on the people who don't yet have families and mortgages? Maybe it's one of the things that begins at home---maybe more conservative parents should be accepting (and maybe financially supportive) of their young adult kids doing the whole chase-the-dream thing?

Or maybe supporting the arts in other communities could be helpful? NYC and LA natives (read: Democrats) have an advantage because they can start breaking into the biz and take quality classes while it's still acceptable to live at home, even while in high school, and they have family and friends already in town, don't have the hurdle of a cross-country move. Maybe we should be supporting serious film-making based in places like Texas, where young adults who come from conservative homes and aren't firmly set on politics yet, could get in the biz without changing their whole lives.

357 I've been making this point too. Conservatives tend to be serious about working 'real' jobs and making 'real' money but they need to invest in good fiction that promotes conservative ideas and ideology.
Things like Avatar get a lot of attention but that movie had some obvious liberal BS in it. Liberals already funnel their money into art, cinema and various other areas of fiction so it only stands to reason that we're bombarded with a one-sided point-of-view at the box office.

358 The real problem is conformism. The "creative" community is as conformist as it can possibly be, because in their world, nothing matters more than popularity. It's laughable when they claim to be edgy after saying something hateful about a Republican or kissing another woman. Nothing could be more banal.

Posted by: Peej at November 29, 2012 08:57 AM (u0XTA)

359 "Until conservatives get serious about bankrupting the intellectual competition by canceling subscriptions and voting with their dollars, we'll keep losing."

How exactly does one vote with dollars against the Associated Press style guide?

Boycotts are useless. They don't even work for the left, and the left actually enjoys being told what to do.

There's nothing - nothing - inherently leftist about creativity, art, literature, movies, or culture. Leftists have dominated those fields because conservatives haven't bothered to show up. We self-censor for fear that someone will say mean things about us.

We're doing exactly what the left has done - building ourselves our own little alternate reality bubble to avoid having to engage with concepts that make us uncomfortable. We need to stop acting like helpless prisoners inside an enemy culture. It's our culture too, and they can't have it.
