Germany Won't Back Palestinian State At UN

You know what's sad? That the "worthy" news story is one country's decision NOT to back Palestinian statehood.

Fuck the Palis.

17 It does appear that CNN will try to out-left MSNBC

Jack Welch, head of NBCUniversal’s then-parent company, GE, suggested that Zucker had turned the Today
show into Pravda. As head of NBCUniversal, he mandated that almost
every prime-time show include green themes. He was personally a donor to
the Obama 2008 campaign.

Bad ratings? Check. Horrible programming choices? Check. Massive
liberal bias? Check. Turns out Jeff Zucker will be the perfect fit for
CNN.

The MFM and all of its forms must die. NBC first would be a bonus

It's been so long since I went to see a movie that I don't even know when they've come and gone at this point. I keep seeing that commercial for the Blu-Ray/DVD release of the Spider-Man reboot, and every single time I think, "Wow, that was already in theaters? When did THAT happen?"

Isn't Tom Hanks supposed to be in some movie at some point this year? The Cloud Atlas thing? Has that already opened and closed, or is it yet to premiere? I ask because I want to make a point of NOT going to see it, and I want to make it loudly.

34 - "Germany Won't Back Palestinian State At UN"

It's an amazing irony, but Germany at present by far has the most sentient government of any developed nation.

- "2/3 Of British Millionaires Left Britain To Avoid 50% Tax Rate"

Millionaires don't become millionaires by being naive or stupid.

- "Republican Senators Float National Dream Act"

The Dream Act is unnecessary and it distracts from the elephant in the room. Fiscally and economically we can't keep subsidizing a giant black market labor force. Ergo we need some type of guest worker visa program for illegals without criminal histories. Something along the lines of what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for a full decade has been promoting.

- "The Coming Middle Class Tax Hike"

Elections have consequences.

39 Very excited about GOP prospects in 2014. Win six of the 7 Democratic-held seats in states Romney carried (Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia), and Republicans will control the Senate. Find someone to oust clown Franken in Minnesota just to make it entertaining. But Jim Moran is already fielding good talent. Club For Growth and Jim DeMint are doing all they can to find a Mourdock or Angle for this race. Other than Capito, the next most promising pick up is in South Dakota. Former Gov. Mike Rounds announced that he would be forming an exploratory committee for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., two months before the November elections. Not only are Democrats defending more seats than Republicans (20 to 13) but many of the most vulnerable Democratic senators hail from some of the most conservative states in the country, where Obama and Democrats have struggled badly over the last several years., Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia), and Republicans will control the Senate. 50 Argentina confiscated everyone's IRAs already. Now they get to go bankrupt, for the second time in 10 years.

About JJJ -- My friend in Chicago and I were discussing him a couple of weeks ago; the general consensus in ChicagoLand is that he is faking in an effort to avoid the full hammerblow about to drop on him. Oh, and by staying out of sight he managed to win reelection too, which gave him more leverage for stepping down.

Sad, is it not, that some seats are so firmly held that not even being present in Congress for a full year, and currently committed to a mental health facility isn't enough for the voters to want new representation.

There's no magic wand we can wave over the voting public to fix this shit.

58 The MFM and all of its forms must die. NBC first would be a bonus

MSNBC can stay around indefinitely. NBC/Universal can subsidize them and they are actually a content-provider for the network news and for the affiliates, so they recoup that money.

CNN, I would guess, is living off of its international and airline lounge service. The international service is very hard left, so I would expect they're going to go that way and I'd expect more of a merger with the main network.

The way cable financing goes, it's a package and Time-Warner doesn't have the clout NBC/Universal does.

61 Someone mentioned it above, but let's take a look at why the DREAM act is just silly.

When someone comes to the United States illegally, we don't try to track them down, especially. We give them "free" health care. In some places they can get drivers licenses and government assistance.

In addition, they can work for $10/hr and still cost less than any legal resident, simply because they're paid under the table. This means that they're making much, much more money than they would be in their home country (whether China, Zimbabwe, or Mexico), and costing their employer less.

Once they become legal residents, they lose a lot of that. Employers won't be as willing to hire them under the table, for fear of having OSHA and other regulatory agencies called in. That means they'll have a harder time finding work that pays as well. Additionally, once they find that work, it will have to pay significantly more to make up for the taxes they'll then be paying.

So why would someone here illegally want legal status in the first place?

The correct answer is enforcement, and requiring legal status for any interaction (other than incarceration and deportation) with the government.

83 Rice, in a statement issued Tuesday, said she and acting CIA director Michael Morrell met the senators to discuss her Sept. 16 comments.

“In the course of the meeting, we explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: There was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi,” Rice said.

... I get the feeling, even though none of the press reports say it, that the biggest loser in yesterday's meeting may be acting CIA director Michael Morrell, who probably "deep-sixed" his prospects to be confirmed as CIA director.

It's history repeating itself, as a shit-ton of British millionaires fled in the 70s when they did a similar tax.

Movie stars and musicians, such as the Rolling Stones, Sean Connery, and so forth pulled up stumps and fled for Switzerland, the south of France, and elsewhere to avoid oppressively high taxation.

I liked the UK while I visited there, but I wouldn't pay 70% in taxes to live there given how expensive property is in London.

Depends on the state.

Louisiana's a mixed bag for this cycle, as the electorate is far more Republican than it used to be but the bench is not deep past Jindal and Mary Landrieu is heavily entrenched due to seniority and her family's legacy.

If the GOP runs another shit-bird like John Kennedy again, they'll lose and it won't be close.

If they can convince the loser of the Jeff Landry / Charles Boustany runoff next month to run, though, it could be interesting.

Due to Louisiana losing a House seat and the state being unable to cut the lone Democrat district thanks to it being minority-majority, Landry and Boustany had their districts combined and one will be left on the outside looking in.

The LA GOP is dysfunctional to say the least.

The top three GOP officials in the state are Gov. Jindal, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, and Treasurer John Kennedy and they all hate each other.

Part of the problem, IMHO, is that a large number of GOP officials are former "Blue Dogs" who switched out of necessity, with Kennedy being one of them.

Probably not too many mental health pros would countenance alcohol use during treatment for depression. He's been inpatient at Mayo Clinic at least twice. Would be pretty hard for a malingerer to fool Mayo Clinic doctors. Amazing he was re-elected even with a disabling mental illness.

155 This should be under comedy, but it's the NY Slimes leading story today;

California Finds Economic Gloom Starting to Lift

http://tinyurl.com/bnfxo7d

After years of spending cuts and annual state budget deficits larger than the entire budgets of some states, this month the independent California Legislative Analyst’s Office projected a deficit for next year of $1.9 billion — down from $25 billion at one point — and said California might post a $1 billion surplus in 2014, even accounting for the tendency of these projections to vary markedly from year to year.

A reason for the change, in addition to a series of deep budget cuts in recent years, was voter approval of Proposition 30, promoted by Gov. Jerry Brown to raise taxes temporarily to avoid up to $6 billion in education cuts.

“The state’s economic recovery, prior budget cuts and the additional, temporary taxes provided by Proposition 30 have combined to bring California to a promising moment: the possible end of a decade of acute state budget challenges,” the report said.

(Reuters) – New single-family home sales fell slightly in October and
the government revised sharply lower its estimate for the prior month’s
sales, casting a small shadow over what has been one of the brighter
spots in the U.S. economy.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales dropped 0.3 percent last
month to a seasonally adjusted 368,000-unit annual rate.

Government data for new home sales are subject to substantial revisions.
Indeed, the Commerce Department cut its estimate for sales in September
by 20,000 to a 369,000-unit rate.

The data leaves the pace of new home sales just below the pace reported
in May, suggesting little upward momentum in the market for new homes.

No and yes.

In the Behind The Scenes stuff with Shawn Ryan, he says that Shane's character is what shrinks call "family destroyer", someone who wipes out their entire family rather than leave them alive for their wrongdoings. I honestly did not expect that at all. I thought Shane would have been caught and arrested and his family still on the run. I had no idea what was going to happen.

Loved The Shield, loved the actual ending, hated the total stall-out of the story between Shane cracking and the start of the confrontation between him and Vic.

The pacing in there was bad, though I figure that FX's decision to spread out the show more than Shawn Ryan had intended was the culprit.

The final episode, where Vic starts rattling off every single crime he committed in exchange for immunity and then him being stuck in a desk-job under threat of his immunity being revoked with no family and no friends thanks to his family ending up in witness protection, Lem and Shane being dead, and Ronnie going up the river was the perfect way to end a series about an anti-hero.

I hated it, too. I'm perfectly OK with the same actors in multiple story lines etc. What I hated was the strongly progressive moral flavor of it (and that reference to Soylent Green was what? CHICAGO (CBS) — An ex-convict who preceded Jesse Jackson Jr. in Congress, now wants to win back his former congressional seat.

Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds will announce his candidacy on Wednesday.

Reynolds, once a Rhode’s Scholar and a rising political star, saw is
career come crashing down in 1995 after he was convicted of having sex
with an underage campaign worker.

He also went to prison for financial crimes.

242 As for drug testing requirement only one industry is required by law to test their employees and that is nuclear.

Bullshit.

Mandatory drug testing entered the American workplace in the 1980s, led by gradually expanding federal government requirements.

The government first ordered drug testing in the military, then extended the requirement, consecutively, to the Coast Guard, to federal workers in "safety sensitive" positions (over half the federal workforce), to employers receiving federal grants or contracts of over $25,000, and by the mid-1990s to workers in the aviation, trucking, railroad, marine, and pipeline industries.

286 Germany not backing Palestine State, UN or not.

Sanity prevails. Leave it to Germanic logic to state the obvious (the irony is not lost). In the end, it's up to the locals to get along and make their own peace. Politically, bold move on Germany's part, again denouncing any connection with Nazi relations which historically connected with the Muslim Brotherhood. Neat dance.

Palestine may be a region designated once by Rome, meant to erase Judea by juxtaposing the Philistine history onward. But not every region, and not every indigenous people "get" their own UN nation state. Can you imagine? Every different affiliation of people having their own "nation". Too many chiefs. No confederations, no unities, no tolerance for differences, no mutual respect shared.

Once again, the indigenous population(s) of that region, Israel, have always been of many different tribes and religious orientations. The tribe of Judah itself always had its various religious sects, even as today.

In principle, whatever government exists there today should then represent all of the various people as citizens, regardless of creed or race. So much for the US American experience of unity, distinct from the tribal European models.

Even the biblical claim of land title from God belongs to ALL the progeny of Abraham, one big family of tribes too numerous to track, except perhaps by genetic testing.

http://www.bible-history.com/maps/israel_judah_kings.html
Ironic that in policy, the modern entire Israeli territory only represents Judah that broke away from to always plot and war against its ancient brother original nation of Israel, still today despising the Samaritans of ancient Israel, for instance, as a low and unequal status. Even amongst the tribe of Judah, those descendents returning from Western Europe and the US pervade national and religious leadership positions, and denigrate those Israelis from Eastern Europe, Asia Minor or the Middle East, and Africa. Wealth speaks a universal language though not all can afford.

For all of you talking about "Cloud Atlas" - well, if you can stand to watch it, D.W. Griffith did the same thing (parallel stories, not parallel actors) in Intolerance in 1916. Frankly, the only good part of the movie is the Fall of Babylon bit, but it only goes to show there's nothing new under the sun.

And Thorvald - with regard to the idea of soul mates, have you ever read The Love Letter by Jack Finney? He's the fellow behind the book Time and Again and one of his stories was the inspiration for the movie Somewhere In Time. The story always makes me cry when I read it:

Movie stars and musicians, such as the Rolling Stones, Sean Connery, and so forth pulled up stumps and fled for Switzerland, the south of France, and elsewhere to avoid oppressively high taxation.

One of whom was John Lennon, who in between performances of "Imagine" ("Imagine there's no possessions") to avoid UK taxes fled to New York, where he got smoked.

295 284 I can guarantee you that if you operate an excavating machine within three feet of a gas pipeline you need to be drug tested.

I can also guarantee you that the "drug test assistance" industry is a lot faster at reacting to Government initiatives than the Government itself is in creating them.

Drug testing, other than (most) immediate post-accident at the scene tests, is merely one more example of a group of lobbyists (in the drug testing industry, of course) stepping up to the Federal teat for their share of the cronyism.

Like a lot of things (including all of the 0.08 bullshit), it's all designed to catch honest people that aren't real bright or careful. Actual full-blown addicts and criminals...they're so far ahead of the authorities on this one, it's just sad.
