75 to reference an earlier theme: *surely* you don't seriously attribute rush limbaugh's popularity to abstract, dissertative treatments of capitalism's benefits? don't make the mistake of reading your own intellectual engagement into your political compatriots!

you are correct in often reminding your readers of the rarity of their knowledge and involvement; it is an indisputable, if disheartening, fact that the General Public, no matter the partisan persuasion, prefers its political platitudes particularly pedestrian.

you'll recollect we're square withing the age of Shiny Things And Twitter...i was barely born in the eighties, but certainly through the nineties and naughties and right on into the current day, "accessibility" has ruled the roost.

yeah, the dems won because their politics were stupid and easy...and along the same lines, characters like bill o'reilly and rush limbaugh are popular because their politics are largely stupid and easy.

this kick we've been on about offering thoughtful arguments that would stimulate a logical internal dialectic in economy-concerned voters backfired pretty considerably on 6 nov...it's not the right time to double down on "well, my people take their politics with a dash of hegel and a side of hume."

...not unless one is content with "his people" shrinking progressively into a politically nugatory minority @.@

I hear you. But I look at it like this:

I imagine I'mstanding on the deck of the Titanic, an hour after the iceberg strike. The foc'sle is underwater. The lifeboats are gone, but I didn't get a spot anyway, because women and children first. The lights are still on, I'm still dry.

The officers are arguing (here's where I get all metaphorical and stuff). Half of them are insisting all that's wrong is some luggage is getting water damage. The other half is swearing that the boat leaks, but if we reconfigure our pumps we can save it.

Me? I'm gathering up the people I care about, lashing some wooden deck furniture into a raft, and going over the side. The boat's goddamned sinking. It sucks, but doing nothing sucks worse. There is very little that a determined group of people can't get through, given some prep and the will to not be beaten.

Unlike the libs, we read our history. We know how this story ends. People don't change; the desire of something for nothing has been, and will be, a huge driver of human behavior. I aim to plan-- and act-- accordingly.

123 "Red Dawn" (2012). No spoilers from me, but I did enjoy it. There's no Harry Dean Stanton (http://preview.tinyurl.com/c8o54pf), but the imperative is now a meme. And, really, neither this one nor the original is meant to be a how-to on armed resistance to Tyranny in your own community, but both show its necessity. In the way movies had that made little boys want to grow up to uphold Truth, Justice, and the American Way (and now to whine, stretch your body piercings, and induce psychosis with chemicals), both films (even in 1984) are retro. Xenophobic? Naw, the premise is "invasion by an occupying army". The bilious bastards at the WSJ ought to be glad it's the NorKs and not the TSA.
The bad guys have AKs, and eventually the good guys do, too. Some Marines fight the good fight, and are portrayed warmly and sympathetically. As hot as the chicks are, I have to say they're not Leah Thompson nor Jennifer Grey (but I denounce myself).
My personal advice for those who'd form armed resistance to a foreign occupying army here? Start now, and don't waste any time. Read Sun Tsu and Musashi, read widely in military history, learn at least one unarmed combat art, and learn the "One Mind, Any Weapon" way-of-life. Be on the lookout for foreign occupiers who are careless with their AKs.

Evidence please.

At Fukushima's peak the additional radiation on the US west coast was just barely measurable and well within natural variations. You probably receive more radiation from your granite countertops in a week than the total additional radiation from Fukushima.

Plus iodine-131 only has a half-life of around 9 days. So for it to cause a high increase in US thyroid cancers it would have to have crossed the Pacific in huge amounts and quickly which seems unlikely.

145 Gazans offered very public thanks to Iran on Tuesday for helping them in this month’s fight against Israel, when Iranian-made missiles were fired out of the Palestinian enclave towards Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

“Thank you Iran”, said large billboards on three major road junctions in the Gaza Strip – the first time there has been such public acknowledgement of Iran’s role in the arming of Islamic terrorists in the tiny territory.

The message was written in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Farsi. The posters also depicted the Iranian Fajr 5 rockets that were used for the first time to target Israel’s two largest population centers. No one was injured in the attacks.

The billboards were not signed, but a senior official with the Islamic Jihad, Khader Habib, said it was only natural to show gratitude for Iran’s role in the conflict.

“Iranian rockets struck at Tel Aviv. They reached out to Jerusalem. Therefore it was our duty to thank those who helped our people,” he told Reuters.

“We have distinctive, good relations with Iran and such a relationship will continue as long as Iran supports the Palestinian people and backs up the resistance,” he added.

154 Old sailor,

That may be. However the Japanese decided not to fucking respond at all because of Tepco's corruption. There need to be immediate entombment.

Thyroid problems have been found in over 40% of Fuku-prefecture children. Japan has readjusted all their official radiation safety levels upwards of 1000% to disguise the problems. Japanese cargo ships gave been turned away from foreign ports because their radioactivity is so high. Huge swaths of sealife have been rendered inedible due to radiation levels, and spot testing in toyko and beyond has found soil (esp after rain) to be as radioactive as nuclear waste.

The reality is reactor 1 and 3 probably had melt-throughs, the spent fuel pools have been exposed to air and suffered multiple recriticalities, and there is a reason Japan has since shut down every single nuke plant they have.

I think the us government could gave responded and fixed it. We were invited then uninvited. Tepco decided their worthless honor needed protecting.

The radiation poisoning is orders of magnitudes higher than hiroshima, Nagasaki, or cherynoble.

169 "I'm going to stop paying mine. Fuck these guys. Going galt, etc."

we were discussing the student-loan question the other week. as i said then, i'm torn, because i took a retrospectively horrible job in a retrospectively unethical economic sector so that i would make enough money to pay mine off quickly enough that i could go back for my phd before hitting that untrustworthy age of 30.

then again, i understand acutely that higher education is hopelessly inflated above its value in today's america, and it's pretty ridiculous to impute to an 18-year-old the entire guilt of a short-sided decision that the exploitative academic authorities are vociferously encouraging him to make.

problem is, the bad actors go unpunished...would that the universities ate the student-loan defaults. :/

"Well guys, I'm gonna have to be more erudite now and hopefully I will win lengthy four-paragraph praise from jimi rae.
Posted by: Rush Limbaugh"

i'm not saying rush isn't capable of erudition...nor saying he doesn't know exactly what he's doing, for that matter. rush is certainly an intelligent, highly educated guy, and on rare occasion he does make theoretic appeals to economic theory, just like ace said.

i'm just pretty certain that his more academic treatments, rare as they be, are lost on the vast majority of his audience...and evidently he's pretty certain of it, too, because he makes sure that most of his show is the sort of dumbed-down, accessible political sloganeering that flies high in the kardashian era.

you can cry about it if you like, but the majority of the american public doesn't care to be made to think about things. pre-packaged pabulum like bajinga-gate wins the day, and much as we may hate it, we're going to have to get back to the drawing board and learn how to stuff Big Ideas into Little Sound Bites.

You really should be asking questions instead of stating facts. There are commentators here who know a great deal about nuclear energy production. Posted by: Ostatni pocałunek at November 27, 2012 05:36 PM (n2vS6)

183 Thyroid problems have been found in over 40% of Fuku-prefecture children

Okay here's the skinny on this 'statistic':
"[...] The Fukushima prefectural government [...] survey found that 40 percent of 96,000 or so children for whom test results are available developed thyroid gland problems, such as nodules, or lumps, and cysts. [...]

Despite parental concerns about radiation exposure, it remains difficult to say with any certainty whether the 40-percent occurrence rate is alarmingly high or not. This is because no exhaustive thyroid gland tests have been done on children using highly reliable ultrasound technology."

Which means that of the children they tested 40% had a thyroid lump of some kind. But since they had never done widespread thyroid ultrasound testing of children before this, no one knows the natural rate of this to compare against. Most likely it's probably somewhere around 40%.

By a wide margin, 68 percent to 23 percent, Americans prefer stores with signs that say “Merry Christmas” during the Christmas holidays than the more generic and secular “Happy Holidays,” according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey.

A few examples:

– Among men, it’s 69 percent for “Merry Christmas,” compared to 22 percent for “Happy Holiday.”

– Women: 67 percent to 23 percent.

– Whites: 69 percent to 20 percent.

– Blacks: 56 percent to 40 percent.

– Democrats: 51 percent to 41 percent.

...i-131 nat'l exposure being probably somewhere around 40%? @.@ you can't seriously mean that.

the natural rate of thyroid cysts is somewhere around 0.6% according to the majority of medical literature. that's six tenths of a per cent, or 0.006, which is much, much smaller than the 0.4 ration of thyroid cysts found in fukusima's villages.

the scare-mongering is a bit imprecise, because rather than "prefectures surrounding fukusima", the study was only done in the small villages immediately surrounding the reactor site.

furthermore, follow-up testing has, to my knowledge, yet to show a single instance of malignant progression of thyroid tumours, so there certainly isn't any "thyroid cancer" to speak of, although a small handful of the affected children -- i think around one percent -- have presented with significant hormonal irregularities associated with thyroid dysfunction.

it's certainly not worse than chernobyl or hirosima, but it's certainly much worse than baseline, too, and it's obscenely anti-scientific to claim that 40% is a normal rate of presentation with thyroid cysts.

259 I encourage "economics in one simple lesson."

It includes an essential section as a dire warning against government intervention in housing markets attempting to create economic growth, because it could ruin the entire economy.

And one wonders why, starting in the late 69s, the book was purged from economics courses nationwide. Along with Hayak.

Once one realizes that what has occurred economically was intended, and not an accident, a lot of things begin to become more clear about how sinister the left is.

262 "No embassies have been burned, sacked, or even drawn a few protesters

Yet the "Christian Right" is the big danger to America"

of course part of the xtian right is a huge danger to america and human progress in general. hard-fundamentalist xtians have been taught from a young age to ignore any evidence contrary to their early-indoctrinated weltanschauungen, and the corollary rejection of rationality has all sorts of negative repercussions for a well-functioning modern society.

just because the primitive islamic religion is far more immediately dangerous than the slow social toxin of my-way-or-the-highway xtianity -- and just because the New Religions of radical leftism and unquestioning statism are just as dangerous as hard-fundamentalist strains of xtianity for much of the same reason -- doesn't mean that the pathological confirmation bias of non-islamic fundamentalism (e.g., "the big bang is a lie sent from the put of hell") is innocuous.

murder is not the only way that a religion's perniciousness can manifest itself.

Allow me to rebut: Fuck you.

I did not claim that 40% is the normal rate of thyroid cysts. The problem here is that they did not do ultrasound scans of children in unexposed areas to establish a baseline to compare against. So I merely speculated that the baseline rate (assuming same technique, methodology, guidelines, bla bla bla) would be pretty close to the 40%.

Your constant accusations of being anti-scientific whenever someone has the temerity to state something you disagree with are tiresome.

never felt like this before, I'm usually a happy warrior but the

bastards have me down. Fighting back seems futile. I hate this.

It is a real downer. I had to go home and look at my son and admit to myself, daddy won't win your freedom in his lifetime little boy. It crushed me. Then I started to think longer term, about his life, and the generations to follow. The fight didn't become futile, it became longer. We have far more to do, and looking at what must be done it is daunting but not insurmountable so long as we hold to the values that have brought us this far. Progressives were willing to fight for over 100 years to take away our freedom. We need to be willing to do do the same to get it back. Part of my observation on that long term multi decade plan, I just posted. For the short term, I am more along the lines of giving the US a good taste of what socialism is along with many in the LiB camp. But long term I am still optimistic that with the right attitude we can change things maybe for my Grandchildren.

It's not hopeless, it is just far and difficult. If we ever truly believed though it is a fight we cannot abandon while we still have breath.

happy holidays is an excellent and inclusive compromise, sure, but the forceful censorship of an innocuous and largely secularised holiday according to this modern game of He Who Whines Loudest is a bit distasteful from any reasonable standpoint...even a wholly irreligious one like my own.

i feel like part of our sundering as a cohesive american culture is down to the artificial interest-group fracturing of the political-correctness movement, and i, for one, am just so tired of all of the divisiveness. it's as though in the post-War age, humans are scrambling all over one another to invent novel domestic enemies in a petty bid for self-validation...

Chris Christie is a joke as a national candidate.

Jeb Bush? Really? Think the Republican Party will actually do that? Really?

Gerard Vanderluen occassionally puts up a graphic when the Republican party does something monumentally stupid.

Republicans: They thirst for death.

This just goes to show how "out of touch" the some of the big wheels are in the Republican Party. Giuliani is getting senile if he really believes that.

My guess is that this is "messaging" co-ordinated by the so-called party leadership that this is what they want us to accept. The other message is that they are out of touch with reality.

I have a message for them. Fuck you.

Utterly predictable crap.

The only moment that showed Christians in a positive light was when one white cop and one black cop were hunting down a pastor who'd committed murder (natch) and the white cop was making fun of the pastor for believing in the Rapture; the black cop said "I do, too" -- but that's because ONLY black people are allowed to be Christian in Hollywood.

The left is NOT "afraid" of Christie, unless he falls on them.

Just like we were told that Obama was most concerned about "Huntsman" as his opposition. Really. Huntsman. Oooh, scary Obama.

Three basic rules of a campaign.
1) energize your base
2) de-energize your opponent's base
3) persuade a majority of the "independents" to vote for you

Christie would so alienate large parts of the Republican base there would be little to worry about in defeating him. And he would be slaughtered in the primaries. Ditto Jebbie.

Jebbie's time has gone. That well has been poisoned and there is no going back. Jebbie is not even that popular in Florida anymore.

lol. if you're claiming it's obscenely anti-scientific to impute the increase in incidence of thyroid cysts from baseline-0.6% to fukusima-40% (that is, two magnitudes' increase!) to the well-known[i/] and -understood reuptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland, i'm not sure what to tell you.

you're basically saying that if a building crumbled when there was an explosion inside of it, it would be anti-scientific to impute the destruction of the building to the explosion before more evidence is gathered about other possible causes.

i'm not exaggerating: the correlation between internal i-131 exposure and such an extreme increase in the incidence of thyroid cysts really is that indisputable.

i'm a vocal proponent of nuclear power to the exclusion of all other methods of mains electricity generation. still, just because i like nuclear power doesn't mean i'm going to be dishonest about the obvious cause of the hundred-fold increase in thyroid-cyst incidence over baseline.

What is the reward for giving up? If we resign ourselves to the "inevitable," who pays us, when, where, in what coin?

This system that we are caught in for the time being is genocidal. Chronic mass immigration plus forced integration and assimilation mean that everything we care about, and especially the tribal continuities and values that are supposed to outlast an individual's life, will be gone like the Hittites.

There's no way to gain in the long run by "accepting" a fate like that, nothing to "move on" to collectively if one "gets over it," and no contextually rational shame or sense of foolishness to avoid by "being reasonable".

So struggle on.

That's because obviously you aren't a scientist. A scientist would give me an in depth review of how the environment in Japan changed, which environmental stressors from chemical contamination, to poor sanitation, to contaminated drinking water, lack of environmental control, drastically altered nutrition, and on and on, could contribute to the observed symptoms, and offer through actual study how much each factor likely contributed, hypothesize on amplification/diminishing of effects of multiple stressors and come up with a scientificly based conclusion as to how harmful the radiation release actually was based on the the full battery analysis. Or he would say he isn't sure but merely believes the nuclear contamination might be a significant factor. You come off as having the all the answers when you really have none of them.

--

We will know racism is truly a thing of the past when you see a black criminal and a white victim on TV.

I was almost surprised recently while watching The Good Wife. Black murderer, in prison. Of course, he had been on a college water polo team and in a fraternity. But wait! The victim was black too. And...suspected of being gay. The lawyer first argued it was a hate crime (the guy wasn't gay, but to be a hate crime, the killer just had to THINK he was gay). Then they tried saying it was a black on black hate crime because one of them wasn't black enough because he was from the 'burbs.

I was kind of confused by the end of it, but my faith was restored, because although the killer wasn't technically white, he was racist, homophobic and obviously a 1%er if he was on the water polo team. This story is obviously just like real life in so many ways. The prisons are full of black racist homophobes who kill fellow water polo team mates because of a fraternity rivalry.

413 I don't think it's 100% fair to heap blame on students over student debt.

Here's why:

1) every HS student, for 4 years, meets with "guidance" councilors who tell them they should do it. That it's a good idea, etc. Every teacher reinforces this.

2) the schools in a variety if ways trump it up above the 1st.

3) the college has you do the same thing with advisors, councilors, etc. They have an entire department (or more) dedicated to telling you what a good idea it is.

4) the colleges further lie their asses off about job prospects for the most bullshit of majors, and have been caught doing this repeatedly

5). The entire system, from the age of 5, teaches kids that magical liberal economics works

6). Kids are literally groomed for financial destruction from the age of 5. It is unreasonable, after 12 years of democratic indoctrination, to expect that the average kid to figure out that the entire fucking thing, from top to bottom is a scam.

The point is that trying to be a political - moral scold is a loser to a certain segment of the population. And true or not (not very true), that is the way that Social Con views are portrayed in the Massive Bullshit Media
To a certain degree, the right path is to talk about your personal beliefs, but re-iterate your belief in the value of Liberty.

Because the Democrats definitely do NOT believe in Liberty. At all. The want top-down control of everything. Their fall-back retort to any criticism of their basic anti-Liberty stance is that "The Republicans want to get into your bedroom!".

And the Democrats want to get into everything else. Your healthcare records, your bank account, your 401K, your ownership of firearms, the choice of car you drive, everything else. They are facists, pure and simple. This has been the overiding truth of the Democratic Party since Woodrow Wilson. And yet they are never called on it.

That has to end. The way to end this silence is to take a principled stand for Liberty and demand a real examination of the real consequences of every major policy that the Democratic Party stands for.

432 The thing about the social issues is that in one form or another they are always there. That means you can base long term strategy on them. You can plan to win election after election by moving things in the right direction, and build your party accordingly.

War isn't like that. War is episodic or unpopular. George W. Bush did a bad favor to the Republican Party in 2004 when he effectively defined "Republican" to mean "pro-war, no matter how socially liberal you are". That gave the party no long-term future.

Economics has more staying power than war, but it's still weaker than social issues in the long run, or the Romney / Ryan economics-only campaign would have been a winner. Without the social side of things, the human stories, the media salesmanship and bluntly the tribal politics and who-gets-what, people lose focus on economics. Maybe they shouldn't, but they do and they always will. Building a party on economics only is a loser - not always, but in the long run the trend will be downhill.

444 If you move enough Hispanics (legal and otherwise) into an area, and if you already have enough Blacks there, and if you put the cherry on top by treating military service and military pensions as "taking government money" then it's easy to show that red states are takers.

It's the same with many social /moral issues. The maps that pretend to refute the hypocrisy of conservatives (and implicitly of rural Christian Whites) are actually thinly disguised race maps. If you have large populations in your state with Black rates of unwed pregnancy and so on it's all over for your averages, even if the conservatives who are calling for higher standards live up to their own preaching - which in any case is not easy, with Hollywood and often the law pushing the other way.

Always take a look at the demographics before you believe anything about "red states" or "blue states".

world wars one and two combined took more victims, iirc, than the entirety of previous warfare in recorded history. that doesn't mean that the romans and vikings were less warmongering than modern man. it just means that the conditions have changed.

i know logic is not typically a major implement in the xtian's argumentative toolkit, but you really should be able to avoid such obvious situational bias.

"Explain the Big Bang Theory.

Mathematically. You may use as much notation as you wish."

...you're an imbecile.

you *REALLY* think i can't show you very simplistic and primitive solutions to the general relativity field equations that were originally done by friedmann IN NINETEEN TWENTY NINE?

you think i even have to get my gr book for that? you think i can't do that off of the top of my head?

besides matrix algebra and calculus notations being quite too difficult to waste my time with on aoshq, you're also obviously too ignorant to even begin to understand the significance of whatever math i could show you, so i'd be a fool to waste my time. i'm SURE the exact solutions in question are somewhere on wikipedia; try looking up alexander friedmann.

you're 80 years behind, chump: catch up.

anyway, it's not ONLY the friedmann solutions as evidence to big bang. it takes probably a couple of years' immersion in the cosmological physics to fully appreciate the preponderance of evidence for big-bang cosmology. but there is a reason that all the Really Smart People, and even the dumb ones like me, have all come to the same conclusion.

by the way, imbecile, the big bang just so happens to be the SINGULAR physical theory that supports your nonsensical idea of a supernatural creator: the big bang, as an undeniable consequence of causality, necessitates a so-called "first cause" that must have existed outside of the spacetime of this universe.

a slightly-less-imbecilic xtian might seek to call that prima causa "god", but it seems you are stuck on triumphantly demonstrating your ignorance of mathematical and observational evidence from the great depression.
