Time: Hey, You Know Who'd Make A Good Person of the Year? Sandra Fluke, That's Who

I know she can count on the votes of ten people in a parking lot.

One major advantage the leftists have over us is their domination of the media, of course. They can confer "Hero" status on any leftwing political actor, no matter how marginal, no matter how, frankly, whiny and cloying.

This was the real problem with Rush Limbaugh's "slut" comment. It wasn't that he called a woman a slut -- Bill Maher does that a lot. The problem was that the media declared Sandra Fluke a "Hero" and you cannot call a Hero a Slut, just the same -- almost exactly the same, alas -- as you can't shout and give the finger to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

So this whole problem was really the media's creation -- not Rush Limbaugh's mistake.

When Jake Tapper did a soft-focus Hero piece on Fluke, I asked him repeatedly what she'd done, precisely, to earn such status. I also asked him when ABCNews would be running an accompanying context piece analyzing the truthfulness of Sandra Fluke's various "stories" (stories she heard second or third hand, largely via posts on a website) of Birth Control Calamities. He kept saying such a piece was in the works, but it never aired.

At no point did anyone in the media seriously ask if what Sandra Fluke was saying was actually true. They didn't ask because, of course, the answer would not have been to her -- or their -- advantage.

The only relevant fact was that Sandra Fluke was politically aligned with them, and the general leftist attitude they call "pro-sex" (it's not; everyone's pro-sex; Sandra Fluke was specifically pro-subsidized-minor-expense-precautionary-birth-control, not pro-sex). Her "truth" was the vague "truth" of the allegedly pro-sex feminists, which was basically that anyone traditionalist or rightist is evil and backwards and sexually repressive. Since that "truth" they all take to be True Beyond All Contestation, they didn't feel the need to examine her actual claims in detail.

I've made this point before, but I think I'm going to keep on making it. The right cannot seek credibility only in the political realm. Politics are contentious when they're not boring. The best way to win on political points is to do what celebrities and the media do -- win a certain amount of goodwill or credibility in non-political areas, and then spend that capital of goodwill and credibility on politicking.

I saw in the Daily Beast a pointless, hackish article about Karl Rove's love of Argentinian fabulist writer Jorge Luis Borges. (One of his stories, "The Library of Babylon," can be read here. Alas, he's not on Kindle yet, at least not in English translation.) He's often called a fantasist, but this may be misleading for Americans whose idea of fantasy is shaped by someone like Tolkein. Tolkein wrote fantasy, whereas Borges explored the idea of fantasy, what it is, why it happens, what purposes it serves. More like Philip K. Dick than Robert E. Howard. One of his best-known stories concerns a man who creates a fictional world so detailed that other writers begin adding to it, until the time comes that the fictional world is so well detailed it is as real as the actual world. (I think maybe he got this idea from Lovecraft.)

At any rate, this nothing of an article contained three points:

1. Jorge Luis Borges is a writer interested in the idea of fantasy.

2. Karl Rove likes him.

3. Karl Rove ergo has learned from Jorge Luis Borges the art of creating fictional realities for dumb Republicans to inhabit.

I have to stress there was absolutely nothing in this "article" -- really a blog post -- apart from a brief background on a writer, a slim newshook, and a paragraph and a half of the most hackish, tendentious "Republicans Are Dumb and They Lie" bullshit. Seriously, very low level, off-the-cuff blogshit.

Nevertheless, this squeaking fart of a piece was included in their "Books" section, part of their "cultural coverage." And why did I click on it? Because I like Borges. Why did others click on it? Because they like Borges. But instead of reading anything novel about Borges they got a full-face egg-fart about Lying Liars who Lie.

As I said, I'm going to keep stressing this. Conservatives cannot just keep expecting that politics itself moves people towards political choices. The left has created a virtually seamless full-spectrum messaging machine in which hardly a word can be said about any subject without the commentator putting in a good word for socialism or Marxism (or, far more frequently, attacking those who stand against socialism and Marxism).

The right-leaning media would be well-served in expanding its own range of interests to subjects other than politics qua politics, and maybe, at some point, do a little of its own leveraging of non-political credibility into political agitation.

18 Ace, my friend, we are never going to make inroads into the culture unless we can de-program at least 3 generations of Americans and take back the schools that have brainwashed them in the first place to prevent further damage.

Anti-Americanism is now the default setting of too many people and, of course, the MFM and the entertainment biz. As someone who has worked in the latter for the past 30 years, I can say that it is virtually impossible to make significant inroads in such a way as to affect what the message is.

WE MUST TAKE BACK THE SCHOOLS.

I agree, ace. The problem, of course, is that "right-leaning media" is by it's very nature dismissed. You can't start there. You have to go to the closet conservatives in the media and academia and get them to surreptitiously start slipping their conservative messages into their leftist-approved scripts/manuscripts/curricula/etc. You have to start in camouflage until the movement has begun. THEN you can come out of the closet and say, "Hello, world! I'm a conservative!" Otherwise you're just going to keep hitting the regressive wall and never make any headway.

63 It's pretty fascinating, and horrific, how long the left has been at this, how methodical they've been, and how difficult it will be to overcome.

I don't know what came first, but the left has systematically influenced the culture and pre-disposed the masses to leftist ideology.

1. The education system. Teachers have always been left-leaning. But the late 60s and 70s saw a massive infiltration of leftist teachers into the system. Ever since, they, along with textbook publishers, have been pushing leftist ideology, sometimes subtly, sometimes not, from K through 12 - and even more aggressively in post-HS ed. Millions of children believe what they believe because that is what they were taught. (Interesting fact: You may remember the national uproar about some schools in Kansas teaching creationism. Liberals in NY didn't care about creationism, or the children in Kansas, in particular. What they objected to was the threat to their control of the curriculum.)

2. Political correctness. Through education, then through culture, media, television etc., saying anything critical of leftist ideology became either hate speech or incredibly un-cool. The left took control of language, and dictated what ideologies were acceptable an not.

3. Fairness over liberty. Fairness is the left's trump card. They've built it up as the ultimate ideal. Anything they don't like, they brand "unfair." No more first place, only participation trophies. Stop keeping score, both teams win. And thus the entitlement mentality is taught, reinforced and institutionalized.

We on the right have a lot of work to do.

That guy who built the Khan Academy on Youtube proposed an entirely new way of higher schooling credentialing. It's fucking brilliant! It works like this:

You simply watch the courses online and do the work it says in whatever field. You are the one completely responsible for watching, learning, and mastering the course material. There is no time limit, there are no tests. You can go back to the course material as many times as you want until you feel confident that you know it like the skin folds on your genitals back of your hand. When you are ready to obtain certification (i.e. the degree), you report to a proctoring center where you will be given the exam. You pay a small fee for the administration of the exam and your degree paperwork. The proctoring center takes a portion of that fee and re-invests it back into the expansion and improvement of the online course material. Khan said the proctoring fee could be as high as $150.

In fact, I've just started a new occasional series I'll be doing on "charity that works." The first of those is now up- which is only tangential to the point, which is this: "And why did I click on it? Because I like Borges. Why did others click on it? Because they like Borges."

I'm hoping people looking into "Charity" in general, and "Give a Goat" (in this case) specifically will find it. I'm hoping that some of those will be Liberals who will begin to see why things like this are so good.

I caught (because my wife wanted to watch it) Extreme Makeover: Home Edition last night. I didn't really follow the whole thing, but one of the things that was going on was they sent a bunch of school supplies to a village in Africa somewhere. A charity was there working with that village to build a new school.

Here's what's important, there: the school was being built by that village. It wasn't a bunch of American volunteers with their do-good-ism coming in and doing it, it was locals providing the labor and (from what I could tell) the material. Hopefully, they were being paid for same. Even if not, that makes the school "theirs" in a way that a bunch of Americans coming over and simply building one never would.

The culture war is vast, and we have to have people fighting on all fronts.

86 With regard to conservative media, Reagan did it through jokes. They were EPIC.

this is the kind of thing I mean when I say that we have to just flat out LAUGH at the shit these regressives spew from their mouthasses every day. Don't accept their premises; don't acknowledge any intellectual value to their arguments whatsoever, because THERE ISN'T ANY. Just laugh at them, point out the absurdity, and DON'T APOLOGIZE. Few things hurt our cause more than when a right-leaning individual expresses a core conservative belief, the base cheers loudly for him or her, then the idiot APOLOGIZES because of "backlash." You know what that does? That tells all the people in the audience who MIGHT have found themselves saying, "You know... he has a point," that they are in fact WRONG, that acknowledging the veracity of the statement is itself morally or intellectually repugnant, and that they should be ashamed of themselves for thinking it.

DON'T APOLOGIZE.

Of course TFG then wrapped his arm around her too.

They created her as the mascot of their positions on womyn. Yet it doesn't seem that, on her own, she is very effective. She's just a prop, like the docs in white lab coats they rolled out attending a TFG oration prior to passing OTaxCare. Props. No one even knows their names.

1. A filmmaker has been jailed in the United States for making a film. Jailed. By Barack Obama. Jailed. Over and over and over again. Jailed. 1st Amendment violation. Jailed. How could he??? Jailed. How is that possible in this supposedly free country? Why, Mr. President, why? Ostensibly for probation violation, but how many probation violators are led away in the dead of night?????

2. Why can't the press ask some god damned muslim protestors in Egypt, and yes in Libya too, if they've ever even seen, ever even heard of the offending movie trailer on Youtube ???? HMMMMMMMMM????? BTW, how many 'views' did it have when Benghazi went down? 20 ? 100 ?

3. Somebody PLEASE do an interview with a lefty Hollyweird icon who LOOOOVES Obama and ask them some questions about freedom, about the constitution, about why everyone who opposes the slightest remark that comes from the Lightbringer's mouth is labeled a racist. Why? Why? Why?

115 I think Ace is on to something here, but there's a fatal flaw that'll make winning in this arena impossible for us.

A very large part of popular culture is moved by powerful forces: wish fulfillment, escapism, acceptance, vicarious fame, faddishness, groupthink, the urge to belong.

By contrast, ours is a hard ideology--results matter, bullshit walks, realism (when we're not indulging the crazy cousins in our family, the evangelicals), comfort with genuine individuality, tradition, skepticism, thrift. These must largely be abandoned to enable the soft-focus alternative-world that most of pop culture sells.

I keep looking at pop culture for legitimately successful conservative "performers" or culture-movers, and rarely see them. I'm afraid the bedrock principles of conservatism are incompatible with the established mores of the popular culture appetite, and trying to "fit in" will only look fraudulent and forced.

137 Not completely true that the Right lacks good cultural arguments. Conservatives have had some success in the culture wars as well. Look at gun control with the mean ole NRA overcoming the 1950's-1960's public fetish for restricting gun rights. Pro-Life adherents have also changed public attitudes. Those following organized religion are increasingly adopting the conservative side as are the married.

The key then is adopting messaging on subjects that plays to the Right's cultural successes. If Rush had focused on Fluke's rich privileged welfare mentality instead of her sexuality, it would have been harder for the DemMedia coalition to attack Republicans for it. No one likes a whiner and ridiculing her as a rich girl who wants others to pay for her sidesteps the whole gender war thing. You also tap into latent class warfare resentment re elites.

BTW Republicans should quit firing on Rush and other commentators. Instead, attack the premise of the question--example MSM Media DSM operatives: "Do you agree with Rush Limbaugh's attack on Sandra Fluke by calling her a slut? Republo Office Holder sample answer: "No, but why is a wealthy woman attending a prestigious lawschool looking for a handout from struggling Americans? Damaging questions on cross examinations are dealt with a brief yes or no but then you elaborate on the points that you want to make. If the MSM continues to hammer Rush then remind them of colleagues at their network and whether they are responsible for all of their statements.

147 God bless him, Newt Gingrich made many of these points on Hannity last night. He said any political movement that fails to make an absolute joke of someone like Sandra Fluke and instead allows her to become the face of a campaign is a dead movement. The problem is that Rush thought he was making her a joke, but he used some of the Forbidden Words to do it and this created an entirely predictable backlash.

But the beginning of that problem was Republicans creating the circumstance for Sandra Fluke to show up at a fake Congressional "hearing" in the first place.

We still have a Republican leadership who saw nothing amiss in having an all-male panel with all-male witnesses dicussing federal policy on oral contraceptives for women. Were there no female staffers or even enlightened males that could have seen that was going to be a problem??? And when you have a ruthless uber-feminist running the opposition, the result was entirely predictable.

149 Make a documentary celebrating abortion, showing every detail of various abortions, the discarded body parts of tiny corpses.

Interview women who get abortions for convenience and congratulate them on their initiative.

And the capper -- show actual footage of a Dr. killing a partial birth baby in an "abortion" procedure.

Just present it as a documentary. Straight faced.

After all, it's legal, right? Why hide it? Why be ashamed of murdering full term babies who still have one foot in the womb.

It's legal. Right?

154 When Jake Tapper did a soft-focus Hero piece on Fluke, I asked him repeatedly what she'd done, precisely, to earn such status. I also asked him when ABCNews would be running an accompanying context piece analyzing the truthfulness of Sandra Fluke's various "stories" (stories she heard second or third hand, largely via posts on a website) of Birth Control Calamities. He kept saying such a piece was in the works, but it never aired.

He lied to you, Ace. Lied to your fucking face. So if he calls you for a comment or anything else some day, what are you going to do? Give him the content he wants or tell him, "FYNQ, you Fluke-felching pederast. Co call fucking Markos Nutsos Mustafaholio or whatever his name is, you propaganda bullshit artist with a byline."

That's why we shouldn't try to fit in. We should blaze a new trail. Or to be more exact, we should re-blaze the trail that the left has conveniently allowed to become obscured with weeds and debris.

Heroism. Virtue. Morality. Courage. Righteous sacrifice. Independence. Freedom. Good and evil. Right and wrong. These are all tried and true messages that have resonated with audiences for centuries. Those are OUR messages, not the left's. The left is all about telling the story from the coward's point of view. From the fallen angel's perspective. Through the murderer's eyes. Exploring the victim's suffering instead of celebrating her rebirth. OUR stories are stories with color, hope and vision. Theirs are cinder blocks and barred windows. There is no contest here.

Also, by virtue of being a student, even though she was 30 at the time, she got to pretend that she was a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

That's why they started Air America, of course that failed so they started Media Matters to just try to discredit talk radio and the burgeoning Fox News. But Democrats found their messaging machine in MSNBC and the internet and now talk radio looks antiquated.

Fox News really was a good station up until 2004-5 or so, then it really went downhill, i can't even remember the last time i watched it. So, talk radio is oudated and Fox News is worthless. The right has some good sites like Ace's of course, but Hot Air is a bland townhall spinoff now.

201 Sorry, Ace - this is tangential to your point. However, whenever the Fluke/Limbaugh issue is brought up, not once have I heard a conservative point out what Limbaugh was actually saying.

The unfortunate thing about Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut is that the use of that specific word was misspeaking on Rush's part. Anyone can listen to the segment and objectively note that he was making a joke about how, essentially, Fluke was asking to be paid to have sex. As he was drawing a comparison between Fluke and, not a generically promiscuous woman, but specifically a prostitute, the word he was looking for was probably "whore". If my memory serves, he even corrected himself within seconds of saying "slut". Because he misspoke, however, the left could jump all over him about attacking a poor, defenseless student, and ignore the point he was making.

Was his joke in poor taste? Probably. Should I be forced, through Obamacare, to subsidize Sandra Fluke's sex life? Absolutely not.

218 Republicans have always been perceived as reactionaries: protectors of the status quo, the defenders of The Way Things Are, the ones--in Bill Buckley's words--standing athwart history, yelling Stop! That perception (and that reality) needs to change, especially since the status quo is now a steady slide into socialist decline and authoritarian rule.

We need to be committed and unapologetic American revolutionaries. More importantly, we need to stop thinking of the Democratic Party as it once was and see it now for what it truly is. Its national leadership is composed of a pack of Marxist ideologues. Its methods are straight from the Chicago Machine. They cheat, they lie, they steal. They love power and hate freedom. Unless and until theGOP recognizes these particular truthsand changes tactics accordingly, we're going to continue to lose no matter who we select as our presidential candidate.

219 #208 The thing is, they don't care. They want ALL Western instititions debased and worthless. They want to marginalize those of us who defend those institutions. And they're damn close to succeeding.

They're still trying to figure out how to take down conservative media. That's the one hole in the dam they have built over decades, and they know it. They had a plan in 2009 but it was foiled by the Supreme Court in the Citizens United decision. Which is why they still go batshit crazy every time that decision is brought up.

220 point of order -

Limbaugh did not call her a slut qua slut

Limbaugh preceded the "slut" comment with a conditional statement "If she needs that much birth control"l

which is kind of a "it's not heroin, it's PCP angel dust" distinction.

But, it's true.

221 You know what conservatives need?

Adjectives.

Listen to any Marxist, their language is loaded with adjectives. Everything has an adjective attached to it. Since adjectives aren't the main argument, we don't think of them. As conservatives, we think of substance as the important thing, but the adjective allows them to make an unrefuted argument.

So we need the same thing:

"Failed Obama administration"
"Corrupt Obama administration"
and yes...
"Incompetent Susan Rice"

Why do you think that the lefties go apoplectic at "incompetent"? Because you can just say it while making another point. They want to kill the use of that particular adjective, so they pull out the race card.

Consider the following statement: "The failed Obama administration let 4 Americans die in Benghazi."

How do you fight that? You can address the substance or the adjective -- but not both.

At first, people will scoff at the adjective or just regard it as political rhetoric. But when you hammer, hammer, hammer it home, it eventually sinks in.

225 It's easy to forget how great a novel 1984 actually is. Submitted for your consideration--we all know a Parsons:

"Parsons was Winston's fellow employee at the Ministry of Truth. He was a fattish but active man of paralyzing stupidity, a mass of imbecile enthusiasms-one of those completely unquestioning, devoted drudges on whom, more even than on the thought police, the stability of the Party depended."

226 >>You know what conservatives need? Adjectives.

I agree completely. I think whenever I hear a woman talk about her sex life in front of a congressional hearing (and millions of viewers), I'm going to refer to her as "slutty," and I ask you to join me in doing so.

Posted by: General Zod at November 27, 2012 01:31 PM (2+bRt)

227 #218 That's an important point. Yesterday's Republicans - Mitch McConnell et.al. still think they are dealing with yesterday's Democrats. They aren't. They are dealing with full-on Marxists now, and not just ideological Marxists, but tactical Marxists -revolutionaries who will lie, demagogue, smear, break all the rules of decorum and convention in politics in order to win. And it isn't even about policy anymore, it's just about winning and crushing the conservative movement once and for all.

#221 My favorite adjective is Alinskyite. Newt Gingrich used the term very effectively in the primary debates and does in his TV and radio appearances. Most people don't know what it means, but the more we use it the more people are going to Google it and start understanding what the Democrats are doing. It isn't mean, it isn't racist, it's an accurate description of nearly every Democrat from Obama on down.

Hillary Clinton wrote her senior thesis at Wellesley on Alinsky. We should spend the next four years making Alinsky a dirty word, then distribute that thesis nationwide the day she announces for President.

Posted by: rockmom at November 27, 2012 01:33 PM (aBlZ1)

228 Hate to say it but making a media star out of a rejected congressional hearing witness is genius. We need that. War.

A *lot* of things we made fun of this year turned out to be kind of brilliant in hindsight. The Dems are really good at weaponizing the ridiculous.

230 Do you know how good that Brassai post looks on FB? A little editing of the first sentence in the preview window and it's literal click bait for artsy types. I have a lot of them as friends and have taken to cross-posting non-political posts that are on right-leaning blogs like this one.

They come, read the article, then leave. Maybe they hung out a bit and saw what the rest of the site is about. Maybe there was a less-than-conscious nudge to the right. It helps that this place isn't wallpapered with ads for Newsmax and 'one weird trick'.

Rather than cancelling cable, a conservative argument would challenge its basic business structure. Cable TV is within the knowledge of both ordinary and sub-literate Americans. It is a bill they pay or know others to pay. It is a monthly expense in which people pay a flat fee for stuff they don't watch. Why? Bundling. How does MSNBC survive when not many watch? It gets its portion of the cable fee. Maybe NBC would fund it as a continuing propaganda arm but wouldn't you enjoy making the argument that "you shouldn't have to pay for what you don't use." A populist argument that cries for legislation or at least threats of legislation. Destroy their business model or encourage them to destroy it themselves. This type of plea is self-organizing and is the type of issue that seems to be something that could become viral without some big campaign.

I still have the webspace I used to host Project 42 Radio until I had to shut down at the end of October. The hosting is inexpensive, and I'd be willing to host the site on that account.

I'm no great shakes on web design, but we could get started with Word Press and post articles as blog entries to get started.

Let me know what you think. If you really want to get this started, I'm ready.

In the spirit of kicking the commies in Hollywood in the balls, I'd like to push the slogan "Music and movies want to be free."

That'll appeal to hipster douchebags, and undercut Hollywood's revenue stream.

Yep, and to use adjectives to reverse the meaning of whatever noun they modify, as the commies use "social justice."

"Social sharing" could mean "paying your own fucking way," for example.

239 I have no tolerance for some political hack who probably just heard of Borges yesterday. That said, given the gulf between how dumb Rove actually winds up being and how smart Rove is supposed to be, I bet he doesn't get Borges much. (I could be wrong.) But this isn't about Rove: I have a dream about Commie hacks.

240 My latest project is this: Every time someone complains about anything - gas prices, food prices, taxes, trouble dealing with their doctor or insurance company - I've taken to saying: "This is what you voted for."

My girlfriend is a lefty (gimme a break, I live in Boston), though not a deep thinking one. She had planned to go to England to visit her sister, but airfares took a huge jump, and now she can't afford it.

She's been very sad about this, but, and not without trying to be supportive, I've been telling her, "This is what you voted for. Obama told you energy prices would go up, but you voted for him. Obama told you you'd have to sacrifice. This is the first of what will likely be many sacrifices you'll make over the next four years."

This. Because most people are not going to get rid of tv. Fighting to allow people to pay for what they really watch is a winning idea. Same thing with changing the copyright law and keeping the internet open and free. We can win on those issues, but we can't seem to get it to penetrate through the thick skulls of the Repubs in power. We build goodwill by fighting these fights.

Posted by: Josef at November 27, 2012 05:13 PM (c1scD)

243 Just a reminder, when talking about changing the culture, start with your library. They have become cesspools of politicially correct and leftist books. I noticed one of the new books today was "Master on the Hill" about Thomas Jefferson and his slaves. But there are ways to fight back. I always search for Conservative authors. If they don't have them, I request an interlibrary loan. I discovered last year that my library makes purchases from some of these loan requests. I got notice today that they are buying "The Fortunes of Permanence: Culture and Anarchy in an Age of Amnesia" by Roger Kimball. It makes it more likely that others will read some of these authors. I think librarians are at least willing to make an attempt to stock books from all political persuasions, but they sometimes aren't familiar with good Conservative writers.

244 I've been lurking on this site for a long time because I'm a moron. I thought I should bring up a thing I discovered awhile back on Youtube, and I felt compelled to bring it up here because you guys are also morons.

I think Sandra Fluke testifying before congress on behalf of some "Women's reproductive rights" bullshit outfit might be the exact same person as the "Kelly Dougherty" who testified before congress a few years prior on behalf of IVAW.

I could be wrong. Look up the vids on youtube.

245 Yes, yes, and yes.

All the levers of influence in our culture are controlled by the Left. Education, mass entertainment media, the news media, the bureaucracies, etc.

Until we wrest control of at least some of these institutions from the Left, we are pretty much fucked.

But then the question becomes: How do we wrest control of these institutions from the Left?

Answer that for me, and then we'll talk.
