Egypt: Same Old Dictatorship But Now With Added Islamism!

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood President declared himself a de facto dictator today.

Boy, no one saw this coming. Well if by "no one" you mean everyone who isn't a liberal foreign policy "expert".

A decree by Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi granting himself extensive new powers triggered dueling demonstrations Friday by supporters and opponents.

...

Muslim Brotherhood officials said the measures were necessary to ensure the country’s full and healthy return to democracy.

“This level of immunity for presidential decrees is indeed unprecedented, but it is necessary, and it is controlled by a time frame” that ends with the election of a new parliament, said Gehad el-Haddad, a senior Muslim Brotherhood adviser. “This constitutional declaration cements the way forward in terms of time frame and powers.”

But the decision raised immediate concerns among many liberal activists who had already been worried that Morsi had taken a distinctly authoritarian air in the three months since he swept out the top ranks of the military and sidelined what had long been a powerful independent institution in Egypt. Egypt’s short-lived parliament was dismissed by the country’s high court shortly before Morsi took power, so legislative powers also are concentrated under the president. Taking the courts out of the equation means there will be no judicial review of Morsi’s decisions.

Ah yes, "we must have authoritarian rule to allow for freedom and democracy"-Stuff Jefferson Said, The Arabic Edition.

Fearless prediction: This latest step will be met with calls for greater aid and dialogue from the foreign policy grandees who not long ago sneered at people who warned that the Brotherhood would did this exact sort of thing.

One man, one vote, one time. Hope the Egyptian's enjoyed it while it lasted.

Reminder: Always trust content from DrewM. and Ace of Spades HQ. From my post the day Morsi won the presidency.

The military is trying to hold sway over things as long as they can and try and co-opt the Brotherhood. The reality is, revolutionary movements like the Brotherhood don't see elections as a charge to govern but an opportunity to increase power. Morsi will sound conciliatory and such but will leverage this victory to increase pressure on the military and to exercise greater control than whatever formal power he winds up [with].

Lots of optimistic talk among the usual suspects on CNN...the Muslim Brotherhood will be different or something. Personally, I think they've stood for things for decades, it seems insanely naive to think that they will suddenly moderate in victory.

29 BTW,

For those of you interested in understanding what's going on in Egypt: Morsi has ensured peace on his Eastern flank (Israel). And all the attention is there.

Now watch what the left (west) hand is doing.

Several times before Egypt has made moves against Libya, and anti-Egyptian sentiment aided Gadafi's initial power grab decades ago.

The Brotherhood now wields significant power in Libya, and Egypt could provide the military power Libya lacks to purge the last of the Old Regime (around Benghazi especially). And then get all that oil revenue back online.

Those that resist in the Egyptian army get purged, those that participate get promoted, securing Morsi's power over the military.

The next big move will be the new Constitution, which us being drafted by Islamists. It will eliminate the secular judiciary and return all judicial mattersto the mosque. With that in place he will be free to pursue a union with Libya come springtime, and get the oil pumping for money.

The Sinai becomes his gulag, as he has already promised to "make the deserts of the Sinai bloom" by new experiments in "collective farming and agriculture".

109 Egypt can't win a war against Israel even with all their American supplied toys. The country doesn't have the logistical backbone to support any kind of sustained conflicted without outside assistance. If they can't even maintain a sufficient supply of food on the home-front, there is no way they can maintain an army in the field.

Syria is busy as well, so they won't be crashing the northern border any time soon either.

A conflict would however embolden Iran to pull something.

Instapundit highlighted and linked to a new book on Amazon by Andrew McCarthy "Islamic Democracy: The Illusion of the Arab Spring"

In the comments on the book page, someone wrote about their experience in Tunisia in 1968, talking with 3 Tunisian teachers co-workers. They (the three)discussed the ultimate ascendancy of Islam even then. 1968. He realized then that he really didn't know these guys he was working with. 1968.

It's out there, and has been out there. For years. Of course people that know or suspect tend to want to keep the crap game going for as long as possible to get their cut of the take. The reality was that Mubarak was an old man, and when he died or ceased to be able to rule, there was going to be a power struggle. The Arabs have no historical notion of a Constitutional Republic or democracy.Orthodox Islam (Orthodox and historical, not 'Fundamentalist') describes and proscribes all aspects of life, leaving no room for the social activities and personal choices which have been typical of Western democracies.

As long as Islam exists ( and it will still be here after we are all dust) there can be no real "democracy" alongside of it.

I just wish we could keep them out of this country. It disturbs me mightily to see Islamic social practices in public in this country that holds that all men (and women) are equal under the law. As Islam grows within this country, democracy will begin to be besieged by their beliefs and superstitions.

His speech in Cairo didn't inspire the Arab Spring. I don't mean to be haughty, but for you to even suggest that tells me you don't get the Middle East at all. This has been a long time coming, what do you think 9/11 was about? This has been a many decades long struggle.

I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't have gotten involved in Libya, but not because we were picking the "wrong side." Qadafi was a bad guy, and on a personal level I'm 100% with the rebels. Just as I'm 100% with the Egyptians who wanted Mubarak gone. But I disagree with our involvement because how in the hell do we think we can direct other people's affairs when we can't even direct our own? Leadership comes through example. And not to mention the fact that it's just plain unconstitutional. While I may feel bad for the people in Libya, who cares, it's not moral to force my neighbor to spend his hard earned money on it.

And I disagree that Obama has turned his back on Israel. How? Is Israel in ashes? When is Israel going to start paying for its own darn defense? Just in case the message hasn't gotten put out - WE'RE BROKE!

Basically, keep supporting 'progressively less bad' dictators which still need US support to stay in power (and to beat the last dictator we supported).

Eventually, the last dictator will be weak enough you can get a democratic government in there. And the populace has had time to gradually 'moderate/modernize'.

Surprisingly, Obama took that arc and reversed it. Color me shocked.

25 Egypt has no money and not enough food to feed their population. That's pretty much the classic formula for war and plunder.

If I was in Libya, I'd be concerned.

Funny thing is, the Nile Delta is plenty fertile enough to feed the population if properly modern growing techniques are used.

And of course, if you don't have a society that values death and corruption above freedom and free markets.

254 TO: American Subjects
FROM: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton

Osama Bin Laden is dead. Al Qaeda is decimated. Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood are moderate and proDemocracy.

We urge Congress to expand financial aid to Egypt to help it through this difficult transition.

255 Don't discount polygamy in Egypt. Currently 25% of all marriages within the first 3 years. According to my mathematic calculation that leaves a lot of single guys with no hope whatsoever, and looking for war.

257 Get the feeling that this latest Gaza "uprising" was staged precisely for the benefit of Morsi, so he could have a little pretense before he assumed the emperor throne? And Barky was in on it.

What did we get in return? Protection for our little king in Jordan? No more underpants bombers?

Or simply nothing.

Remember, the brohood's draft constitution included marriage to nine year old girls.

Posted by: Justamom at November 23, 2012 02:49 PM (Sptt

Ah, yes, but you cannot consumate the marriage until she's 13...
Same's true in Iran. They follow the teachings of Muhammed, peace be
upon him, who married a girl at 9, but waiting for a few years before
becoming a full-fledge pedo

Posted by: Timin203 at November 23, 2012 02:51 PM (5WxMt)

Wrong, sport. mohammed married Aisha when she was but six years old, and began porking her when she reached the ripe old age of nine. And he used her for "thighing" before that.

261 Hey, it worked for W ("I’ve abandoned free market principles to save the free market system").

Oh, wait. It didn't work. It failed horribly. Oh, well...

262 TFG elevated Morsi to the peace pact between Israel and Hamas. TFG is now more flexible because that was his last election. We are screwed!

Cut off funding to Egypt, forever!

263 Heh. But don't worry, the bible will protect them THIS time.

Maybe, but I'm guessing it'll be their nuclear arsenal.

264 Hey 261, what planet have you been on? What were the democratsthat controlled congress doing while Bush was doing all thosethings?
1. Were they just stupid and didn'tknowwhat was going on?
2. Were they complisit in the scams?
3. Were they bullies that forcedBush intoline by contant cries of impeachment and indictment?
Think about it... We now have a one party dictatorship. Enjoy!

265 So there was no Islamism in Mubarak's Egypt? Muslim Brotherhood founded in 2011? Having protestors trash MB offices and chant that they want to overthrow the MB government proves the MB is getting stronger? Having Mubarak faithful rule badly and discredit secular government for decades is better than having the MB rule badly and discredit themselves for a few months? All seems really odd to me.

Ah yes, "we must have authoritarian rule to allow for freedom and democracy"-Stuff Jefferson Said, The Arabic Edition.

And stuff Mubarak supporters said when hoping his regime would stay 'strong'.

267 B+rry can foment another Egyptian-Israeli war, and hust when the muzzies are about to get eviserated he can sent in Hillary to call a cease fire and The Killa Zero can get another Nobel for himself, for being all clever and devious and shit.

268 "By the way this power grab my Morsi ( and I have to give him credit for his timing) is a huge story and is hardly being covered in the MSM"

Let me know when the MSM covers anything that could embarrass The Lightworker. Then we can go down and have a snowball fight with Dahmer, Bundy, Hitler and Stalin.

271 Prior to the Egyptian election the Muslim Brotherhood said they wouldn't even run a candidate for President so you can trust them that Morsi's power grabis necessary and has a time limit.

Posted by: deepred at November 24, 2012 12:53 PM (YmACv)

273 Well, it certainly was nice of him to wait until AFTER the election so his buddy Obambi wouldn't have the power grab come up in a debate or something. I mean, we all KNEW the "Arab Spring" was really more like an Arab Winter, and we all KNEW that this was not going to end well. I hope we can get a responsible leader in the White House before it's too late. I hope we can just hold on for another 4 years before the next world war breaks out. Obama is such a stupid naive man child. Why America re-elected this dunce is beyond me.
