Reagan Vindicated: Missile Defense Works

Max Boot:

The latest Gaza war is only a few days old, but already one conclusion can be drawn: missile defense works. This is only the latest vindication for the vision of Ronald Reagan who is emerging as a consensus pick for one of the all-time great U.S. presidents.

For it was Ronald Reagan who made missile defense a major priority for the U.S. and our allies. His 1983 speech on the subject was widely derided as "Star Wars" because he envisioned that some missile would be intercepted in space. For years critics claimed that it was impossible to intercept missiles in flight, or that at the very least it would be prohibitively expensive to do so. But now the U.S. West Coast is actually protected by a limited ballistic-missile defense system based primarily around satellites, sea-based Aegis and X-band radars, and Standard Missile-3 interceptors. We don't know how the system would work in combat but it has been vindicated in testing.

I remember how when Reagan announced SDI, the critics - including many prominent scientists - howled and swore that it and missile defense in general would never work. Even as a wee lad I knew their arguments were bullshit even if I didn't have the knowledge or training at the time to prove it.

Well they're still going at it, continually shifting the goal posts as missile defense systems are accepted and come on line. And still just as wrong.

In fact here is some footage of a completely impossible missile defense system utterly failing to intercept a salvo of rockets over Beersheba yesterday. (thanks to BenK)

Missile defense systems 1, liberal scientist critics 0. Advantage: Reality.

USA: A Welfare Nation

Welfare is now the largest item in the federal budget, and under Barack Obama's budget-the one that didn't get any votes, but may nevertheless be a blueprint for the next four years-it is slated to grow another 30% in Obama's second term.

Robert Samuelson points out that the welfare state is breaking us and yet we can't talk about it. So of course the Obama administration wants to encourage new immigrants to get on the welfare too.

And if you disagree, you're more racist than Hitler.

How Gen. Petraeus and Paula Broadwell Exchanged Secret Emails

The same way Al Qaeda often does - by leaving emails as drafts in a shared email account. And they got caught the same way as well.

Rather than transmitting emails to the other's inbox, they composed at least some messages and instead of transmitting them, left them in a draft folder or in an electronic "dropbox," the official said. Then the other person could log onto the same account and read the draft emails there. This avoids creating an email trail that is easier to trace.

Unfortunately for them, when the IP address that logs into the account with the drafts is always the same, it can be traced back to a source. Essentially, Petraeus and Broadwell's affair was outed because Broadwell sent threatening messages over an easily traceable Gmail account to someone, and then used another Gmail account to communicate with Petraeus.

Red Dawn Review: The Tipping Point for Lazy Remakes

Consider this fairly awesome review a mere warm-up for the eventual epic Ace one. Needless to say it was a 3 thumbs down with prejudice.

North Korea has invaded America. BOOM! Did you notice what happened there? With that opening sentence, Red Dawn has already said "Screw this, I'm going out for a smoke". We're not even three minutes into the movie and we're already in full-on "re-write' mode.

...You see, Red Dawn is more of an idea than an actual film, and that idea is this: you will watch anything. An.y.thi.ng. Does it matter if they filmed the movie in 2009, and then held onto it for three years in the hopes that one day no one would notice how stupid it is? Nope. Does it matter that they switched out the "villain" from a nation that spends $144 billion on the military to one that can't feed its own people? Not in the slightest. Hell, it doesn't even matter if the words make sense, or if the edits are cohesive. All that matters is it's on the big screen, it's got a Hemsworth in it, and they'll be charging you to witness the spectacle. I'm betting you won't, and that we're in the process of calling their bluff. Fool us 500 times, shame on us. Fool us with Ethnic Chinese CGI-morphed into scenes with North Korean flags, shame on them.

It's a vicious circle--people who are unhappy and self-conscious about themselves mutilate themselves and make themselves freakish, and when society is repelled by them, they get ever more unhappy and self-conscious. Note: I'm not talking about folks who have more than the average number of tattoos or piercings, but people like this, or Chastity Bono, or that British teenager who was given male to female sex reassignment surgery and now wants his penis back. 59 On pop culture. you might want to check out Sullivan & Son. New sitcom about a half-Korean dude, his Irish Dad, and Korean mom running a bar in ... Pittsburgh, I think.

The show creator is Rob Long (not Robe Lowe, that's the 80s teen heart throb). Rob Long wrote for Cheers in his 20s. He's also openly conservative. And has been his whole career.

And the lead guy, the half-Korean dude, is a stand-up comic and clearly not a flaming lefty. If nothing else because his brother and Dad were in the Army.

That Eastwood guy:

There is an episode of "Mr. Ed" (which at times was screamingly funny) where Mr. Ed is making crank phone calls and bothers Wilbur's new neighbor........Clint Eastwood.

This is 1962 or 1963, and Clint is a lot younger and handsomer (Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide") and the woman on the show just swoon over him.
Hilarity ensues (literally). Put in "Mr Ed and Clint Eastwood" on You tube and it will come up.

It's pretty funny and a good way to kill a half hour on You Tube. Except those bastards at Google have figured an angle about how to make money because you are watching You Tube. So there's that, too.

I haven't seen this anywhere yet (although my conclusion is obvious enough that I'm sure it has been written about somewhere by people way smarter than me), but I'm thinking Iran ordered Hamas to initiate and intensify its missile attacks in order to test Israel's 'iron shield' capabilities.

In short, Hamas is conducting a probe of Israel's missile defense system and Iran is carefully noting its strengths and weaknesses. That's all this attack has been about. They're not just doing it because they're batshit crazy jihadis, although they are.

141 Even Without An Eligible Candidate on the Ballot, Democrats Still Win
http://politicalhat.com/?p=615

The Democrats in Nevada are succeeding in winning a state Assembly race, even though there was no legitimate Democrat on the ballot.

In the 9th Assembly district, Democrat Andrew Martin defeated Republican C. Kelly Hurst. However, Martin had been ruled ineligible to run for the seat due to the fact that he didn’t live in the district. Hurst proved this by using a private investigator to prove in a court of law that Martin lived elsewhere and generally avoided his purported residence within the district.

At best, Martin would be deemed ineligible by the Democrat controlled state Assembly, and would then be replaced by a Democrat appointed by the Clark County Commission, which is in the total control of Democrats. Thus, even though there was no Democrat legitimately on the ballot, the Democrats still picked up the Assembly seat.

To make matters worse, there has not been a serious inkling of Martin having to face the legal consequences of illegally filing as a resident of the district. Such prosecutions have happened before, with Republicans such as Janet Moncrief (Las Vegas city councilwoman) and Lynette Boggs-McDonald (Clark County commissioner).

When one party can steal an election without even having a legal candidate on the ballot, our Republic is in even more dire straights then perhaps most realized.

I don't think it's just sex reassignment though. Look at what some in Hollywood have done to themselves. Cher, Michael Jackson, Tara Reid, and on and on.

Have you ever seen Cher on camera trying to talk with that plastic face. It's just bizarre. Her skin around her mouth doesn't move when she talks. It just isn't normal for a woman to do that to herself. Chaz may be more well-adjusted than her/his mother.

When SDI came out, I was all for it. Anyone who hasn't seen it, find it and watch Morgan Freeman narrating a show about Reagan's nuke negotiations with the USSR -- it's a very positive show, not at all what you'd think from Freeman.

1. Ascendance of FDR-style liberalism (class warfare) and rise of the American welfare state

4. Revival of antisemitism, primarily on the left, leading to the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state

5. A militant Islamic Middle East, armed with oil-funded nuclear weapons

6. Runaway American debt, both public and private, leading to a chronically underperforming economy, high unemployment, and government-induced inflation

She started innocently telling how much Poochie liked it when she used the massager on him. My nephew's girlfriend had to leave the room, she had tears coming out of her eyes.

258 On pop culture. you might want to check out Sullivan Son.

I was praising the show in an ONT just last week or on the weekend. It's not p.c. either: the season finale mocks an FAA human rights employee hearing.

While I read a smart military blog on my laptop that almost certainly exceeds those requirements.

In fact one of their principal arguments was that computing a collision course with a missile was simply too demanding for any computer to ever handle. But even as a young proto-geek in the era of 6502s and Z80s, I knew that was utter BS.

276 You can also forget about transparent aluminum.

I doped some aluminum into a SiC wafer a few years ago. It was transparent and reduced the surface resistance from Mega ohm range down to about 60ohm.

With a little more development, it could probably replace Indium Tin Oxide on display panels.

All SDI ever really needed was faster cycle times and cheaper processors. Moore's law provided more than enough of that. You need a lot of (relatively) cheap kill vehicles so you don't need to try and get fancy discriminating between the real thing and decoys.

Which is obvious nonsense to anyone who observes any GOP officeholders.

The whole arrangement is the politicians lie to us during election season to get our votes then forget about us until the next one rolls around. Many of us go along with it because we're full spectrum conservatives. But it's silly to think we're dominating anything.

As for Santorum, it would be nice if folks here wouldn't lie on Democrats' behalf. He suggested once that we might want to discuss the moral degradation caused by the availability of contraception (a position which is totally reasonable for any faithful Catholic), and while that may imply in your mind a willingness to do some thing about it, he never, to the best of my knowledge, had any plans to do so.

But make no mistake about it. To the extent this past election was decided on the celebration of infanticide, sodomy, and theft, this nation has proven it deserves the destruction that is coming. Some of just wish it were better than that.

Different stuff entirely. You need the aluminum to be in unoxidized form to get decent conductivity out of it.

That bath scheme Corning is using isn't nearly as flexible as what I was doing either. I could selectively draw micron range width conductive traces into the surface.

The novel thing was I wasn't using the usual metal-organic pyrophoric gases to do it.

Many republican candidates deal with the abortion issue by saying that each state should make their own determination. Same with gay marriage. This was how John McCain dealt with these issues. As a matter of fact, Obama pretended to hold the same view of gay marriage as McCain. That marriage is between a man and a woman, but states should handle it individually. The problem is that the media painted McCain as being homophobic, but gave a free pass to Obama for having an almost identical view. The problem isn't the social conservatives, it's the media that portrays ANY republican as an extremist, homophobic bigot.

I'm somewhat social conservative in my views about gay marriage and abortion, but I believe that states should make their own laws. This is very common in the GOP.

357 I had a liberal con law prof in law school, but he very much played Devil's advocate. On abortion (yes, I've read Roe v. Wade; most people who talk about it obviously never have), his question was, in the future, when we can safely remove the embryo and grow it in an incubator, should a woman be allowed to abort the embryo (rather than have it incubated). You should've seen the guys going "hell no" -- basically the sentiment was, yo, beeyotches, now you're in the same boat us guys are in -- becoming parents against our will with no say.

359 "I remember how when Reagan announced SDI, the critics - including many
prominent scientists - howled and swore that it and missile defense in
general would never work.
Even as a wee lad I knew their arguments were bullshit even if I didn't
have the knowledge or training at the time to prove it."

The SDI cause -- which I supported at the time and still do -- was not helped by the huge screwup at Lawrence Livermore over the "Excalibur" X-ray laser.

There were two camps of how to implement ballistic missile defense: "smart rocks" and directed energy weapons. LLNL was pushing Excalibur as their directed-energy concept.

This is where the famous Edward Teller quote came from that a "module the size of an executive desk could potentially shoot down the entire Soviet land-based missile force".

Except that was bullshit, because the core Excalibur physics concept did not work. The Livermore boffins had convinced themselves it did, on the basis of an instrumentation fault.

When it became clear that Excalibur was a dead end, the _New York Times_ pounced all over it with lengthy exposés, and pronounced the entire strategic defense concept to be fundamentally flawed.

Which it was not. Only one part of it. Except, try explaining that to your typical urban liberal _NYT_ reader.

The smart-rock concept lived on, and proved a success after investment of a lot of engineering sweat, and that's pretty much Iron Dome right there.

In that scenario, though, the woman would only be a parent against her will if the father wanted to raise the baby from the moment she had him/her placed in the incubator...which is already the case with full-term babies, pretty much right? The mom can opt out and place the baby for adoption no matter what. It'd still really only be men who could be parents "against their will" (if you buy into that at all, which I'm less sure of. I kind of think if you consent to sex, you accept that the consequence may be a baby which you may be expected to support).

Nonsense. The "Republicans are all anti-abortion wingnuts" meme is a media creation, but the idea that abortion as an issue is killing conservatives / Republicans is an absolute truth.

Honestly, what legislative goal do you think is achievable in regards to pushing back against abortion in the next 5-10 years ?

Abortion as an issue for federal office is DEAD. The very idea that there is ANY chance Roe v. Wade will be overturned is a complete and total fantasy. It has been in place for 40 years. The Roberts Court could not even bring itself to overturn a 2 year old law and there are actually people who think any version of SCOTUS you are likely to see in the next 10-20 years is going to overturn a SCOTUS ruling that has stood for 40 years ?

Fucking please.

Talking about abortion does not gain Republicans a single vote. But it sure as hell does cost them thousands of them.

Why do you listen to it then? You're a masochist, that's why. You're one of those people who aren't happy unless they're always in a constant state of irritation over something someone else is doing.

I recommend cultivating a "don't give a shit attitude". Your BP will go down, you'll sleep better, and you'll irritate your friends less, and you're compulsion to waste time trolling blogs and thinking that accomplishes something will subside.

They only cleared two cell blocks for habitation and presumed the other walkers would stay locked up. Which is the sort of folly that always happens in zombie stories.

Also, I'm assuming the phone calls were all in Rick's head since the writers made a point of keeping him alone in the room when they occurred.

God's glory and his purpose are the end of all things. So seek out the eternal purpose and get in line with it...You will fin happiness and salvation. but not as end in itself. It is all for God."

from "The Seeking Heart" by Francis Fenelon

I believe in God's ultimate victory and a new heaven and a new earth.

So in the meantime as frustrated as I can get about the election and the situation here, I enjoy and thank God my faith, my family, my friends, the ability to minister, a new warm little kitten (It's amazing how petting an animal can lower stress .

I once knew a woman in a nursing home named Mary, She was 92 years old and diabetes had gradually taken one foot and another and then one leg and another till finally she had no legs. She could go from bed to her wheelchair. When she could she'd get in he wheelchait to the rooms of the other residents of the nursing home, She listened to them.,talked to them and prayed with them if they wanted it. She learned all their birthdays and sent them cards. Her prayers were always one thanking God for His love and and giving her another day.

I am not Roman Catholic, but to me Mary was a saint (Paul calls all followers of Jesus "saints") and i would be glad to have portion of her gracious, graceful Spirit. I have been thinking of her a lot lately

Posted by: Tammy al-Thor"

Yes. In about the year 1000 there was a formal schism between the western rite and the eastern rite.
The church had been centered in Rome and that part is referred to as Roman Catholic, eastern part of Christianity separated from Rome and are called the Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox, etc. They don't have a strong central authority figure like the pope, but the theology and many ceremonies are very similar.

To make things more complicated, there are some eastern rite Christians who are under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Church, but they look more like Orthodox and have married priests. I don't think there are very many of them.

547 Weak ones may be somewhat defensible. Real ones when we get there are just going to blow holes in all that stuff you listed.

Then they just wait until a cloudy day to hit you. The energy density needed to really power through something is truly enormous, and targeting is needs to be very precise. A miss by a millimeter might as well be a miss by a mile.

I just don't see the ROI on a pure energy weapon for taking out incoming shit.

Gigawatt range shit is so power intensive, its naturally going to have mobility issues involved simply due to the bulk of the energy handling apparatus. There's also going major issues with cycle time because of the need to cool components between shots.

I like flying rocks. Simple, mass producible, portable, cheap, and a portable Coleman generator could produce enough power to run a launch station.

Good for you.

I have been caring for a colony (13-21 cats) for several years now. If it is truly a feral, it may become accustomed to you, but is unlikely to ever become friendly. However, most stray cats are "community cats" that were once homed but got lost or were abandoned. They, with patience, can become really wonderful pets. Of the four cats I call pets, the one I am closest with was a "feral" which was TNR'd and dropped off at my house without warning.

He's my Buddy.

I'm wildly phobic -- just this morning had a filling replaced (with additional cavity underneath drilled-out) with no anesthetic -- but seriously, the procedure itself wasn't all that bad, and I didn't even notice when they nabbed 5 polyps. Getting around the "corners" was the second worst part after the colon prep, and my "recovery" was: get dressed, walk to bathroom, do massive shart, clean up, leave, nap (because the damned colon prep kept me up all night).

I did it without anesthetic because I'm phobic -- my lab tech at my regular doc had her first two without anesthetic just for cost savings, and I'm kind o' wondering why anyone should sign up for the problems of anesthesia.

615 So as the Norks step off of the invasion choppers, one of the first to land runs over to the nearest tree. Soon, he's excitedly waving to the others to come over by him.

"Look! Look! This tree still has all its bark. It hasn't been gnawed at all. Also, check all that grass we're standing on. It looks like it hasn't been grazed for days.

Tree bark soup and grass for everyone. Man, we are gonna eat good today."

That's because math is racist.

Seriously, I would welcome some advice on getting contractors to at least pretend that scheduling and communication are necessary. I'm dealing with the last third or so of a major remodel involving every major system (hvac, elec, plumbing, construction), and can't really get over how little they seem to concern themselves with timelines agreed to, or why they can't even pick up the fucking phone to let me know what's going on if they're late. I can understand difficulties they normally have in their line of work, but can't excuse their negligence of at least informing me so I know.
Oh, this is a bill for the last portion of the work you did that took a month longer than you said it would? Watch how fucking fast I move.

so because politicians, who by any reasonable recollection constituted the majority of the public opposition to missile defence, were able to drag out a few scientists who presented arguments against sattelite-based missile defence, the bloggers here at the "smart" military blog are gleefully focussing on scientists at the main problem.

and conservatives wonder why rational people take them to be anti-science neandertals -- all too happy to enjoy the fruits of scientific enquiry while denying wholesale the theories that led to them and egregiously demeaning those men (and maybe a woman or two) who dedicated their lives to making your lives easier...with science.

i doubt if he drank the bong water...i don't think anyone is ever fooled into drinking bong water, honestly...but there sure have been stories about him "bogarting dat choom". @.@

i remember reading that if obama thought someone was taking too long with a joint, he'd just take it away from them and restart the rotation...starting with himself, of course. or that sometimes, he'd just get up and re-insert himself in the middle of a big circle so that he would get the joint twice in the same single rotation.

i guess those stories could be hearsay, but suffice it to say that i shouldn't be terribly surprised at a president whose executive history has included puerile snarls of "i won" and tweets of the oval office chair captioned "this seat's taken" having "bogarted dat choom" in his less authoritative years...

This 'science' you praise seems like a complex, difficult magic - dangerous for mortals like us to approach. And the god that powers your science magic must be a jealous, weak one for he alone cannot tolerate the acknowledgement of other gods of power.

You claim your god can control the skies, water and fire, and death.

But can he also create life from nothingness, tell us where smiles and the force that binds the universe come from? Can he guide your spear strong and true to its target? Can he protect your dream soul and give you the skill to crush those of your enemies?

Bah. Your god is a boastful one and yet full of fear.

You know .... that's not a bad idea. That could work almost anywhere. A bidding situation, a market, a "pay to crush" kind of thing. You may have just discovered "the next big thing", the killer app that monetizes all of these things that have been "free" up till now.! Why, I ask myself, should I be able to type these worthless words here for "free"?! I should be allowed to "read" for free, but I should have to pay for what I say.Just think about how that might change the political dynamic. All of those lefty, no work, no money freeloaders, would be out of the market! Eureka ... you have found it!!

Probably regularly deludes himself into thinking that the reason people don't like him is because he's gay rather than the fact that he's an angry smug little shit that enjoys the smell of his own farts.

701 "This 'science' you praise seems like a complex, difficult magic - dangerous for mortals like us to approach. And the god that powers your 'science' magic must be a jealous, weak one for he alone among the others cannot tolerate the acknowledgement of other gods of power."

look, i'm not a climatologist. i'm a real scientist. i don't have certainty. in fact, if i have certainty about anything, it's that my theories are certainly wrong in the sense that newtonian gravitation was "wrong" and maxwellian field theory was "wrong" -- that is to say, vastly incomplete and ill fleshed.

unlike the climatologists whose intellectual inertia has apparently raised your ire against all science -- need that dripping-blood font for full effect -- and, pointedly, unlike the religious types whose certitude in the infalliability of their scriptural traditions leads them to lend more cosmological credibility to a preacher who has attended seminary for a few years than to the entire century-strong body of standard cosmologican enquiry, i freely change my opinions when the data and facts don't fit what i believe.

that is to say, i retire my gods regularly for the newer, shinier, and more explicatory gods that are constantly being infloresced as the fruits of the new year's scientific enquiry.

speaking of jealous gods: "You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"

so it looks like it's not my god that's worried about the acknowledgement of other gods' powers. O.O

(and for the record, i'm still pretty sure it was scientists who created the iron dome.)

"But can he also create life from nothingness, tell us where smiles and the weak nuclear force come from, and guide your spear true to its target? Can he protect your dream soul and give you the skill to crush those of your enemies?"

as for the weak nuclear force, like i told that idiot claiming to be an astrophysicist last week, i just so happen to be your huckleberry. of course we know where the weak nuclear force comes from. we even understand half lives in terms of characteristic quantum tunneling times on account of particulate energies and the corollary probabilities of their wavefunctionals to tunnel outside of the nucleus...and yes, we can and have been able for over six decades to model beta decay in terms of the limited-distance gauge fields of the massive bosons mediating the weak force. not sure why you didn't know that, because after sex decades, arcane scientific concepts generally have entered the popular encyclopaedia.

especially on a "smart" blog.

as for smiles, we're getting closer and closer every day with the advances in modern neuroscience -- emotion is hardly the black box that you appear to think it is, over-literary blather aside. since we humans of 2012 have come much closer to understanding the neurochemistry of emotion than the humans of, say, 75kya, i have little doubt that the humans of the future will be able to fully crack the mystery.

as for spears reaching their targets, again: i remain convinced that science is largely responsible for the iron dome. those spears aren't perfect, but let's not kid ourselves: the calculus of projectile trajectories is like 400+ years old. even my newtonian "god" -- one that was retired long before i was conceived -- could have pulled off such a simple parlour trick.

life from nothing is, naturally, impossible -- but life from not-life is something that my "god" -- a new god, one for the future -- is coming closer and closer to achieving every day. indeed, if not for the bleating cries of folks who believe in your weak, jealous god clamouring for government obstruction of the hubris of science, perhaps we'd already have seen inklings of the advent of true laboratory abiogenesis!

it really is a shame when your jealous god gets in the way of good science! :3

naturally, it's just as much a shame when crop prices are driven up to starvation levels under the influence of climate models that can't even retrodict the known climatological past.

but the climate god is not my god, either, and tarring all of science because a handful of bureaucratic hacks who couldn't cut it in a rigorous scientific discipline are worshipping at an altar of their own design is part of what makes conservatives seem so anti-science.

post-grad academics broke for ROMNEY...it's fucking friendly fire. x.X

702 Beware, as you lean against your hand to support yourself over the pisser, arm outstretched like Da Vinci's painting on the ceiling, as you wait for the relief to flow.

You may see an old man's hand there if you look up. I know.

It has occurred to many I imagine, intoxicated or not, in just the right light, that yesterday is gone and that that hand looks like a grandfathers hand.

Tragedy. Time. Suffering. Death. Take a stand.

That hand was young, it once was wrinkle free, strong, bronze almost, but that is how all before have felt, your fathers, your grandfathers, all.

Fear not. This is a dream. Simply be true, and wait for the call.

721 SDI was cooked up in Larry Niven's living room. It wasn't required to actually work. That was merely a nice side effect if it did. The goal was providing a new rationale to do the R and D work for better launch systems in the belief that greatly improved access to space would have benefits both commercial and military to the extent that the Soviets would be far behind and unable to compete.

Posted by: epobirs at November 21, 2012 05:49 AM (kcfmt)

This has been a thing for decades. Enviros bitching about the US using too much of the Colorado and not leaving any thing for the poor Mexicans. The only part of Mexico it goes through is just south/southwest of Yuma near San Luis that empties into the Gulf of California and a tributary of the Gila River east of there and ends just across the border.

It's typical woe is us crap.
