So how about a palate cleanser of....

Some Juicy Liberal Schadenfreude: Peace Corp Guilt

Esther Katcoff is a Peace Corps volunteer in Paraguay and apparently a well-meaning, compassionate person who just wants to help people. And I think you're all aware of the magnitude of harm this kind of person can inflict on those whose lives they decide to improve. But this isn't about them - it's about Esther and her guilt problem.

Because being a bien pensant liberal means feeling guilty about everything - even guilt itself. And it turns out that helping others is really all about you and your feelings....of guilt.

Read and savor the sweet, sweet tears of indulgent, narcissistic liberal self-flagellation here.

People all over the world are dying. They are suffering and we are watching. It is immoral, says Peter Singer, not to do everything in our power to help them. iPods, spankin' new cars, vacations to Disney World... we spend money on these things instead of paying for life-saving surgeries, feeding hungry children or investing in third world economies. According to Singer, the fact that we don´t need to watch the poor suffer doesn't change the fact that they are drowning and we know it. And we let them.

...But what to do about all that? Well, I started by not buying a new iPod after my old-school Nano broke. But would that help the hungry children of Africa? I couldn't just donate the money saved. I was an Urban Studies major. I knew about the complications of development work, the band-aid solutions, the causes that just sound good, the charity that unmotivates the beneficiaries, the money that doesn't always reach the ground. The only way, I told myself, the only way is to understand completely what the people need to fish themselves out of their lake. Then I could support them with my iPod money.

I tell people I joined the Peace Corps to understand what it means to be poor, but that's just part of the story. I joined the Peace Corps to figure out how to escape the guilt of having so much while other people have so little.

But alas even working in the Peace Corps did not fix her guilt problem:

All this seems to me a pretty depressing lose-lose situation. Either I ignore the hunger of a child, or I create jealousy amongst her peers. And either way she will be hungry again next year after I go back to America. How do I cope with all of this burden? How do any of us cope?

I feel like the go-to answer is to try drop it behind somewhere on our two year journey. Just throw that heavy sack in the arroyo. Remind yourself of the hours of work you put into that project, the tears you shed as you squatted homesick in your host family's overflowing latrine. The opportunity cost of doing the Peace Corps, all those tens of thousands of dollars you like to think you could have made if you were employed these two years in the U.S.

But unfortunately, that reasoning doesn't do it for me. Nor does the argument that extreme wealth needs to exist because people need a goal to strive for. I mean, what would Maria say if I told her I'm going to the Lady Gaga concert in Asuncion so that she can strive to have enough money to do that too some day? She doesn't get enough to eat, can't read and lives in a wooden shack with no water.

So how did she finally overcome her tragic guilt? By redistributing it of course.

For me, this is the solution to the heap-ton of Peace Corps guilt clamping down on my shoulders.

Goal 3: to help people back home understand human need and realize their responsibility to throw that lifesaver. In a sustainable way, of course. Because the guilt that we are allowing people to drown is not mine. It is ours.

Well I for one am sad that we live in a world where thousands of people suffer from First World guilt everyday but aren't lucky enough to have an entire village of Paraguayans to help them work out their guilt issues.

The Fiscal Cliff Through the Eyes of a Small Business Owner

The Wall Street law firm Davis Polk has created a new business of simply keeping track of the seemingly infinite number of rules that will need to be written to complete the process of financial regulation put into place by Dodd-Frank. Sadly, only 33% of the 398 required rulemakings have been finalized. (Only 265 rules to go!) Another 33% have yet to have even been proposed.

...What are we doing as a company in light of this uncertainty? We've put on hold business expenses short of pencils, and any capital spending we were considering, including an update of the men's bathroom some have begun to call "the latrine." Instead of calling clients and focusing on our research, we are scheduling, probably in vain, conference calls (read fees) with our attorneys and accountants to try to create contingencies against potentially bad outcomes for us in the tax code. It has forced us to ask ourselves questions that seem at odds with economic growth, like, are there any unintended consequences of employing more than 50 people?

Meanwhile the Democrats are rubbing their hands in glee since taxes will go up and defense spending will be cut without any action at all from Congress. Oh and guess who will get the blame for it all:

The Republican Party took the rap for the debt ceiling and is under suspicion for the fiscal cliff. A new Washington Post-Pew Research poll has 53 percent of Americans ready to blame Republicans if America actually goes over the edge and only 29 percent planning to point fingers at President Barack Obama

On the other hand what people say they're going to do and what they actually do are not always the same. But if you're gonna be demonized anyway, you might as well be demonized for principle.

Rice vs. Rice

It's always sexist to question a female administration official except when it isn't.

What is obvious to anyone with an IQ above 80 is that Susan Rice either lied about the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the consulate in Benghazi or allowed herself to be used to transmit other people's lies about the attack. Questioning whether, due to this fact, she is qualified for the position of top diplomat of the most powerful nation on Earth is neither sexist nor is it racist.
Condoleezza Rice was accused of lying by many Democrats; she was accused so many times that it is now accepted wisdom on the Left that she did, in fact, lie. As a result, many on your side of the political spectrum have decided that this accepted wisdom gives them license to shamelessly use against her some of the nastiest racist and sexist language ever witnessed in the history of political rhetoric in this country.

...The fact is that the non-existent, imagined sexism and racism against Susan Rice from the Right is unacceptable to the Left while the Left's own very real sexism and racism against Condoleezza Rice was, is, and always will be acceptable, and so it goes with every single instance of a "strong woman of color" who strays from the Democratic plantation.

The Atlantic Covers Up the Huma Abedin-Muslim Brotherhood Connection

I've been informed it's un-American to be concerned over Huma's mother and brother's connections to the Muslim Brotherhood or her membership in the same organization as an Al Qaeda fundraiser. So maybe the Atlantic was being extra, super patriotic by avoiding these details and making her relationship seem more tenuous that it is.

Update on the Walker vs Kimberlin Case

John Hoge's latest news in the Virginia case of Aaron Walker v. Brett Kimberlin, et al., is that Walker's attorney Dan Backer has filed motions for default judgments against Kimberlin's co-defendants Ron Bryanert and Neal Rauhauser. Backer is requesting that the court in Prince William County schedule the hearing on this motion for Dec. 4, the same date as a hearing on Backer's motion for procedural sanctions against Kimberlin.

Furthermore, Backer has filed notice that Brett Kimberlin has breached the court's order on the sealed discovery for the fifth time.

If turkey is roasted well in advance of guests arriving, or there is a delay, what's the best way to re-heat? To what temperature?-SaqibSaab

If tented with foil and left in a warm place, a turkey should stay warm for at least a couple hours-at least internally. The real danger is the skin getting soggy and the surfaces getting cold. The best way to fix this? Just pop it in a 550°F oven for 7 to 15 minutes until the skin is crisp and piping hot again. The rest should take care of itself.

Women Spend More Time Checking Out Other Women Than Men

Science:

Half of the 2,000 women polled by online retailer Swimwear 365 said they 'enjoy' comparing themselves to women they work with, befriend or pass in the street.

And the beach is the place where most female ogling goes on, with 80 per cent of those polled saying they love having a good look at other women when they are sunbathing.

...On a day to day basis 42 per cent of ladies said they dress to impress their female peers and not the opposite sex - and even on big nights out its girls they are trying to impress not men.

3 Anonymous' targets Israeli websites over Gaza war

A concerted effort of millions of attempts to cripple Israeli websites during the Gaza conflict has failed, Israel's finance minister said Monday, claiming that the only site that was successfully hacked was back up within minutes.

Cyber security experts said that such hacking attempts have become a new aspect of modern-day warfare and states have to invest in fortifying their virtual defenses on a battleground with vague terrain. (AP)

13 Turkey plans to revive its Ottoman Empire, Iran its Persian hegemony over the Gulf region, and the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists announce that they want to fulfill their dream of the revived Caliphate – all in the name of democracy.
Nothing can teach us more about the perils of a promised rapid transition to liberal democracy than the human rights abuses and chaos we have witnessed recently in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. The West called these revolutions, or this upheaval, the "Arab Spring," while others in the region have referred to it as resulting in an "Islamic Winter," a term with which I agree. The oil-rich countries of the Arab Gulf in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries might do well to learn lessons from the countries that have experienced these revolutions. The only way for GCC countries to endure the blizzard of the "Islamic Winter" is by building democracy gradually, brick-by-brick, grounded in a robust model of development.

The dangerous mistake made by the West, under the leadership of the Obama administration, is its use of an ill-defined notion of democracy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA); it leads to mixed signals and exploitation. Such a loose definition of democracy, combined with the absence of a clear strategy for implementation, leaves a vacuum for countries and groups to take advantage of a period of turmoil to pursue their own agendas.

14 Bakers Union Purposefully Threw Members Under The Bus To Punish The "1%"
More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=621

The demise of Hostess at the hands of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union was not just the outcome of an economic staring contest gone wrong.

http://tinyurl.com/d8kz8wa

The contract they were protesting was imposed on Hostess by the courts. Despite the "evil" 1% pouring money into Hostess in an attempt to save the business, which if they had be successful would have resulted in both the owners and the workers benefiting, Hostess was on the verge of collapse.

The strike led the workers from the position of earning only 68% of what they had been, to the position of earning 0% of what they had been. The bakers' union made it clear that it was worth it to sacrifice thousands of workers, including those outside the bakers' union in order punish the "evil 1%." The union knew that a strike would lead to the workers losing their job. Even the Teamsters urged the bakers' union to stop the strike, even going so far as to suggest a "secret ballot," which the Teamsters themselves have been fighting against.

The bakers' union declared a loss of thousands of their members jobs to be a "victory":

"Our members decided they were not going to take any more abuse from a company they have given so much to for so many years. They decided that they were not going to agree to another round of outrageous wage and benefit cuts and give up their pension only to see yet another management team fail and Wall Street vulture capitalists and 'restructuring specialists' walk away with untold millions of dollars.

"Throughout this long and difficult process, BCTGM members showed tremendous courage, solidarity and devotion to principle. They were well aware of the potential consequences of their actions but stood strong for dignity, justice and respect."

Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister and crystallographer, explained it best when she stated that the ideology of the left was that is was preferable that "the poor were poorer, provided the rich were less rich"

19 The thing that pisses me off so much about these smug urban studies twits is their stereotypical assumptions about their fellow Americans, as stated by the list of things "we" all do.

I have an 8-year-old car. My last vacation was to Branson freaking Missouri. I don't have an iPod, or a Kindle, or an HDTV, or a Blue Ray, or a smart phone. I have a house and insurance and am uncommonly blessed, but I'm not going to be made to feel guilty by this privileged little girl.

Lets help some orphans on our way to Machu Pichu so I can go home feeling smug and content about my trip. Never mind that the community becomes dependent on the handouts and loses the ability to sustain itself after you're gone. The real reason this moron is feeling shitty about all this is her efforts have done nothing to fundamentally change a single dynamic in that community or in her own internal value set. They are still poor and she is still delusional and in denial about the real roots of poverty. Urban studies prepares you for nothing more than ordering your iced mocha latte in spanish. I have breaking news dumbass Paraguay is poor because of Paraguayans and Gaza is a shithole because of Palestinians and only the fundamental reordering of their cultures and economic systems will have a lasting effect. Don't even get me started on the concept of the white liberal savior.

68 More GAAAAFES.

President Barack Obama called Burma 'Myanmar' after a bilateral meeting with Thein Sein, the president of that country. From the pool report:

Obama used the word "Myanmar," the preferred terminology of the former military government and currently nominally civilian government, in a spray following the bilat, rather than use "Burma," the former name of the country, and the one preferred by Aung San Suu Kyi as well as the name the U.S. uses.

"I've shared with him the fact that I recognize this is just the first steps on what will be a long journey," Obama told reporters, with Thein Sein at his side. "But we think a process of democratic and economic reform here in Myanmar that has been begun by the president is one that can lead to incredible development opportunities.

That's well put. Even though I've tried to cut off all contact with the outside world, sometimes I just can't keep my head down enough, and end up going round-ampersand-round with a handful of these pitiable fucks. The enviros are a special favorite.

Once when they 'literally' came to my door, and initial tete-a-tete revealed their irredeemably high thinking, I more or less took one by the earlobe and gave him the grand tour of the estate, documenting (for his edification) every energy-saving, recycling, waste-avoiding strategem at work here going back to my garndfather's day, complete with dates of implementation, many of them before his parents were born.

He left shaking his head (trying to get circulation back in his earlobe, I guess), but it wasn't satisfying. Like calling out any selfish born-yesterday twit, I was just as pissed off after improving his outlook as if I'd just decked him, or thrown a rock or something. What bothers you is that they're still out there, still doing their harm to the young, the halt, the lame, and the blind.

My BitTorrent client laughs at your cheap blurays.

Don't know anyone who did the actual PeaceCorps thing, but I know a chick who did AmeriCorps before going to grad school. Her program was pretty lavishly lauded and she did photo ops at the WH with Bill Clinton. The way she talked about Bill (and knowing her fairly well in real life), I'm absolutely convinced that she banged the bastard, or at least Lewinskied him in the same closet.

Yep, but if you try to do that, the hippies, the UN, the EC and the Peace Corps go ape shit because you're trying to oppress them by teaching them how not to be poor.

It has been tried, a few times. Sometimes even works, on an individual level.

They will shoot you for it in some countries. Better to be poor and die young, I guess.

155 1985's Live Aid was a joke of a concept. Let's give food to people who are starving because they live under a third world dictatorship. That'll work. Then Bill Clinton took it even further -- North Korea would have collapsed in 1994 or so due to self-imposed starvation (albeit "accidental", not like Ukraine's 1920's famine), but noooooo, we had to bail out the regime. Frankly, Bush I would have done the same thing with that goofy-ass grin. The only candidate who wouldn't have was Perot, who would've said, in that Texas drawl, "feck yerselves".

165 Because the guilt that we are allowing people to drown is not mine. It is ours.

Speak for yourself. Having been born in Venezuela and seen the fatalism, passivity, self-destruction, and tribalism of the Third World, I feel no guilt whatsoever about the self-imposed plight of most people on the planet.

The Third World has to work out its own problems. No amount of money is going to change cultures that enshrine and reward backwardness. The Venezuelans enthusiastically elected and re-elected the guy who's driving them further and further into poverty, and they did so because he appealed to their tribalism and promised them free stuff.

My favorite statistic about the Congo: There are 900 ethnic groups there, and they're all at war with each other. My great-aunt had a caretaker from Kenya. All she talked about was how much she hated the dirty Kikuyu. This was an educated woman who spoke perfect English and was a devout Christian, and every conversation came back to how much she hated the Kikuyu.

My friend Nick finally said to her, "Look around you, Ruth. See any Kikuyu? You're not in Kenya anymore. Nobody here except for you gives a damn about the Kikuyu. Why are still talking about them? You left Kenya fifteen years ago."

Made no difference. After a week of sulking, Ruth starting raving about the Kikuyu again.

What leftists refuse to accept is that the Third World is hopeless. Tribalism makes it impossible for them to improve themselves. By their actions they prove to be unworthy of civilized peoples' concerns, so the First World needs to put them out of our minds.

The best Third Worlders immigrate. African immigrants and Afro-Caribbean immigrants here have a higher average individual income than native-born white Americans.

If people want to improve, they generally do. If they don't improve, it's usually because they can't or won't.

197 I'm not too worried about the "Fiscal Cliff." We're in a regulated depression and fitzing with the tax rates isn't going to do much.

The race we are watching is between two sides of the Progressive State. On one side you have the coercive end of the State which uses the threat of financial damage or ruin for non-compliance. On the other end you have the financiers of the State funding the project by stealing wealth from every American who has any.

Progressives depend on the dollar in their mechanics of force all the while they are destroying the value of the dollar. At some point in the near future they are going to devalue the dollar to the point where their mechanism no longer works.

Then they will either try to replace regulatory force with violence or, as I suspect, their precious State will crumble.

There were photos of giant oil facilities surrounded by squalor. My gf at the time was a gal whose father was from Nigeria. The gal and her mom would read the NYT and squeal about exploitation and all that.

Not once did they try to think things through. The oil company and the Nigerian government made a deal. The oil company harvests the oil and sells it on the world market. The cash is split between the company and the Nigerian government. No where in the article was it said the Nigerian government was getting stiffed. The oil company kept its half of the deal.

The Nigerian government kept the money for itself and the Nigerian people got the shaft.

But, you know, the Narrative.

But lasting poverty is generally caused by the government of the country - compare resource rich North Korea with resource poor South Korea.

Looking down the road, Kiva's effect on long term poverty would be minimal. However, a nation can always choose to step away from socialism...presuming the socialists don't have all the guns at least.

So considering that, which are the third world countries that truly undercapitalized, as opposed to deliberately lingering in squalor? In these countries I would expect the effect of micro loans to be phenomenal.

301 Okay, Jarvis, suppose Republicans become pro-abortion, pro-gay-marriage, pro-drug-legalization, pro-amnesty, just like the Democrats and Libertarians on these issues. Then what? You'll suddenly vote for Republicans? Why would you, when Democrats offer the exact same things, AND WILL ALSO GIVE YOU FREE SHIT?

303 Jarvis, your ignorance has no bottom. Blacks made more real social and educational gains in the 1950's than in the whole period since. And FWIW -- pearls before swine, to you -- people were acting then out of actual personal belief and virtue, not just obeying a law to avoid prosecution. You are profoundly stupid.

Have you noticed how depressed Obama and the rest of the Democrat politicians seem?

Their followers are jubilant, but the people in charge don't seem all that happy that they won. In Burma--the first visit there by a U.S. president--Obama fucked up Aung San Suu Kyi's name every time he said it and used the term "Myanmar," which is against American policy. He phoned in his performance there, like his mind was a million miles away.

The Democrats are a dog who chases cars and then finally catches one. What does he do with it?

I think they're starting to face reality, and they don't like it one bit. Today I heard Karl Levin give Obama credit for the Iron Dome, even though the Israelis began developing it in February of 2007.

Levin himself didn't even sound his heart was in it, and he didn't seem to think anyone else would believe him, either.

They always feel bad either guilty or angry or whatever they are supposed to feel at the moment. They can never be happy. If they were they'd get to liking it and abandon progressivism alltogether. So prog leaders teach, if you feel happy, you shouldn't, because their is some "greater good" you are still not accomplishing, and other people are suffering for it. You by extension are a bad person for being happy. Read the opening topic of the ONT for a great example. The only thing that helps her assuage her guilty feelings, is getting others to feel as terrible as she does.

I think Obama pretty much lives in the present. He wanted to win in order to deny Romney the presidency, because all reports are that he hates Romney personally, but now that he's been reelected, it's a letdown because nothing's changed.

He also got 9 million fewer votes than last time, which has got to hurt, and now that he's safely reelected the press is starting to spill the beans about the horrible shape we're in.

The scientific priesthood stands on the shoulders of those who came before them though, and maintains the core.

There is no priesthood for social and political lessons though...at least none the unwashed (apparently) care to believe or trust.

30 years ago, I would have probably said the USA as a nation was such a social/political priesthood, but today, its been proven that I would have been wrong. All it took was one generation for 200+ years of lessons to be discarded/forgotten.

480 There is enough visual evidence with Obama's foreign trips to note a singular aspect. He is so effusive and subservient to any non-White leader of a country. This man is a racist and a very selective peculiar one at that.

His hatred for all things American, especially white America comes out in this effusive, nearly joyful sucking of cock of anyone not America and not White. In fact he let it bleed over into his relationship to Britain at first with the return of the bust of Churchill, until he realized that the current Brit head (David Cameron) also hates Western Civilization.

The priesthood is there. The administration is rife with heirs and proteges of a previous generation of those priests. Axelrod and Jarret are just two.

The difference is that in science bad ideas that cannot withstand testing are cast aside and replaced with better ideas based on more complete data and testing.

In the priesthood of leftism there is no test whose result matter longer than the memory of the electorate, which is brief at best. Thus to a budding leftist Marx is as fresh and current as the latest teenage vampire opus.

Posted by: epobirs at November 20, 2012 01:45 AM (kcfmt)

490 The big problem for science now in maintaining the core is non-persistent media. If civilization collapses for a few hundred years, a lot is going to be lost.

Stone tablets were durable. Low information density, but persistent. Even papyrus and non-acid papers were pretty persistent and durable when kept dry.

A billion+ looters/sackers versus fragile media will do far more damage than a few hundred thousand Vandals/Visigoths did in the past.

What does 200 year old polycarbonate plastic look and behave like? Nobody knows. The oldest stuff we got is only about 50 years old. A lot of the synthetic rubbers used in recent years de-polymerize over time and turn into sticky black goop in time frames where natural rubbers would still be viable. I've seen this a lot in disk drives and foam air seals.

Civilization has a big problem. A lot of "modern "stuff" isn't going to make it long enough to serve as a core.

499 Why are they here? Why are they still so pissed?

My brother is a radical leftist. In my experience, they feel it isn't enough that they win. They have to convert you to their way of thinking even if you've lost the battle or even the war.

They simply can't sleep at night knowing that somewhere out there are people who disagree with them. It infuriates them, because they've made their political beliefs their identity.

By disagreeing with them, you're negating their very selves. You're murdering them, in their minds. Your disagreement poses an existential threat to them, so they hate and fear you the way people hate and fear cancer or nuclear war.

Even if you have no power ever again, they'll still hate you. They could lock you all up in the deepest, darkest dungeons, but it would eat at them knowing that although you're in prison forever, you still disagree with them.

Like in Orwell's 1984, they must convert you to their way of thinking even if they kill you five seconds later. They can't let you escape by dying. You must be made to agree with them at all costs.

My brother can't let me have my own beliefs. For twenty years he's tried to convert me. I see him only once a year, but he still can't resist trying to argue politics. It makes him hysterical when I demolish all his points with ease. Still, he won't give up.

Meese! That was his name. I couldn't remember it. I recognized that prissy mode of expression, with the lack of contractions and the bizarre, stilted, English-as-a-second-language feel. And of course the arbitrary capitalization.

I didn't go check, but I read on another Web site that Charles Johnson has gone full circle and is now trying to debunk the debunking of Paliwood propaganda. His stated rationale is that anything conservatives report is a lie, so he's been twisting himself into knots trying to explain how showing kids killed in Syria and passing them off as Palestinians isn't really false.

Or showing a Palestinian being carried into the hospital and then two minutes later the same guy carrying someone else into the hospital isn't "conclusive."

The Swiss psychiatrist Alice Miller noted that the final step in all terminal mental illness is antisemitism. For some reason all mentally ill people hate the Jews. One way to tell that someone has genuinely lost his mind--I mean in terms of actual, diagnosable psychiatric illness--is when he develops an irrational hatred of Jews.

524 Fun. The Amazon ad that pops up is for a book called Geographies of Mars by a lady named Lane. It's sort of pricey since it's an academic book and one of these days I'm going to buy it. Does everyone see the same ads? Or do they magically know it's me looking at AoS HQ?

Anyhow! I heard Lane talk at the Bubonicon science fiction convention a few years ago and I've been wanting this book ever since. And because it was such a great presentation she gave I thought I'd push it to fellow morons and moronettes just a little.

Her presentation was about the History of Mars science and the various social elements that influenced the interpretation of what we could see, how serious scientists believed that Mars had canals and evidence of an advanced culture and how Wells and Burroughs got some things right, that those scientists got wrong, when they imagined what that advanced civilization would actually be like.

I'm assuming that her talk followed her book. One of these days, soon, I'm going to buy it. Maybe with my spring semester student loans since I'm taking a class on Mars in the spring, EPS 465, neener neener. It's gonna be freaking awesome.

My reaction is mixed. In some key ways, our country was different for the better, but our ancestors had to deal with their own set of problems. Demonic possession is real, in my opinion. In Tokyo in 1986, I was standing on a train platform talking to a Canadian friend, when suddenly I became terrified of the Japanese man standing in front of me. His back was toward me.

I was hit by waves of the worst fear and revulsion of life, and the guy slowly turned around to face me. The only way I can describe his face is that it looked concave instead of convex. It was sticking out like a normal face, but at the same time it looked like a bowl.

His expression was a combination of glee and total misery. He looked sheepish, ashamed, happy, and utterly filthy, like he was made of shit. I'm absolutely positive that he was possessed.

Since I was raised a Catholic, and since there's no such thing as an ex-Catholic, I started praying as hard as could, silently telling him to get away from me because I rejected him and everything he stood for. I asked God for strength. The bowl-faced man slowly turned away from me and then walked off down the platform and disappeared into the crowd. My Canadian friend didn't notice anything and kept yapping away the whole time.

*This.*

At Ace of Spades, all that we write will be lost, like tears in the rain.

Ten years ago, Allahpundit had a website. It was read by countless people. It helped expose Rathergate. Mary Mapes bitterly complained about it in her book, "Truth and Duty".

Now? Gone and forgotten. The electronic record of this swept away. Perhaps a copy still exists on Allahpundit's own personal computer.

After that? Oblivion.

All that will be left is Mary Mapes paper book.

We think digital is forever.

But it is so ephemeral.

disappeared into the crowd. My Canadian friend didn't notice anything

548 As to Mentally Ill patients hating the Jews...

Eh, for your organic Parinoid, I suppose it just depends on which cultural soup you swim in.

I don't doubt that there were many poor souls in say, 1850 who were tormented by the idea that they were being persecuted by some sort of vast Jewish conspiracy.

On the other hand, at least they didn't worry so much about anal probes from extra-territorial life forms in those days...

On the third hand, it seems very rare nowadays for someone to present as having delusions of being Napoleon.

Too bad, I bet Napoleon could kick alien butt!

It ain't who she is but who she knows! My brother could've had entree into the world of John Paul Jones, but he didn't have the sense to see that. Galas is a songwriter and producer who knows everybody in the music industry. She's a legend.

My brother's almost fifty and playing the folk circuit. He does "house concerts" to audiences of eight. He's all over YouTube, and each of his videos have an average of eighty-six views. Some of them have been up there for five years.

It would be like me blowing off Stephen King because I hate his writing. If Stephen King asked me to collaborate on a book with him, I'd do it for free and sing his praises to the entire mainstream media for the next thirty years.

But I still hate his writing.

Interesting.

There's going to be lots of laws being modified eventually over pot. DUI laws, for an easy example. Here's the rub -- MJ effects (stoned) are relatively short lived, somewhere in the range of 4 hours or so. But THC can reside in your system for upwards of 30 days in detectable amounts.

If my brother had recorded with Diamanda--she loves his slide guitar--she would've introduced him to all manner of people, from JPJ to you name it. She loves helping struggling musicians, which is why she made the offer to my unknown brother in the first place.

He thought she was beneath him, so he never called her after she gave him her number. It was a firm job offer for an album she was doing.

Two years later my brother is still playing his house concerts for eight people, but now he's two years older. He wants to be a star, so he can't bear to play second banana to anyone else.

583 That was closest I've come to something that evil. It was not human.

My father has a similar story about an albino that crossed his path in New Orleans when he was there on business in the late 80s. I don't remember much about it except that he needed to talk to our pastor about it, and I had nightmares for weeks over the story.

A friend of mine and I have both had what he has since explained to me as sleep paralysis-where you think you've woken but can't move-since college. He tells me 'fixing' a bout of it is as easy as remembering what it is and choosing to go back (fully) to sleep. Which worked for me a couple of times.

I bring it up because part of my experience with it was the certainty of a malevolent presence his lacked. The times I choose to go back to sleep *it* didn't seem to be there. But that aspect, when it was there, got worse despite my thinking I knew what was going on. There was something like ringing in my ears that got louder over the years too.

Until, much like you, it occurred to me to pray for protection. A simple desperate prayer was enough to end the 'dream' and after doing that a second time, I haven't had an attack in years.

At least not that I remember.

596 A simple desperate prayer was enough to end the 'dream' and after doing that a second time, I haven't had an attack in years.

From what I understand, evil (in the form of these entities) has to be invited in. If you categorically reject it, then it has no power over you.

Apparently you can't be possessed unless you agree to it on some level. The book Hostage to the Devil, by the late priest Father Malachi Martin, is one of the most hair-raising books about demonic possession ever written.

Interestingly, he said that Catholic priests could only do a set number of exorcisms in their lives because having contact with demons damages your soul even when you're there to do battle with them, not embrace them. If you went over that limited number of exorcisms, you were in danger of losing your soul.

On the other hand, Pim van Lommel, M.D., is a Dutch cardiologist who studied near-death experiences for thirty years and wrote the book Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience. His conclusion--from listening to his patients--is that while some souls go to hell, they can get out by acknowledging the wrong they committed and sincerely repenting.

I don't see Ted Bundy ever sincerely repenting. In fact, Dr. van Lommel said that his research shows him that some people choose to remain evil forever and never get out of the dark, empty place that is hell.

602 "http://www.queerbioethics.org/about/"

i guess that's pretty ridiculous.

anything that has to do with "queer theory" -- as tho individuals who happen to be attracted to individuals of their own sex need some peculiar theoretical consideration outside of standard psychology and neurology -- is pretty ridiculous almost by default.

still, if you were trying to come up with something more ridiculous than seven-day creationism and possession by daemons...

possession by daemons.

in 2012.

not only that, but the straightforward cosmology whose inescapable invocation of a necessary prima causa is perhaps the only reasonable evidence for a supernatural, extra-universal creative force is being once again tossed aside for the literal interpretation of allegorical fairy tales written by Some Guys A Couple Thousand Years Ago Who Treated Women As Chattel Because God Said So Oh Yeah And Also Kept Them From Sacrificing Doves On Their Periods Which Was Very Important Back Then But Not So Much These Days.

ah, it's so nice to see that as a "conservative", you support the price-fixing efforts of the government to impose a very non-free-market minimum wage.

it's true that illegal immigration hurt unskilled employment, sure...but only to the extent that the market rate for unskilled labour happens to be lower than the artificially imposed minimum wage. if the government weren't inflating prices by interfering in the labour market, there would be no preference for illegal workers over legal unskilled labour.

There's also the weird factor -- I can do two of chocolate, nuts, yellow cheese, and red wine in a night.....but if I do three, I get a migraine that lays me up for days. Wine jello with fruits is alcoholic (reduces inhibitions), non-allergenic, and is unusual and fun -- very nice in the date situation.

Untrue. Illegal workers can disappear and nobody makes a fuss. The person doesn't even legally exist and was working under a fake SSN, so if there were no witnesses to his little accident he becomes a cornerstone of the community.

Having an underclass handy has always had its uses. Who better to use for an already illegal enterprise? The situation is such that the authorities can only guess at the numbers.

626 lol.

what's "untrue"? that illegal workers are popular because they accept the going market rate for labour?

that the only reason illegal workers are preferentially employed to the "african american community which is hurt most by their presense" is because they work cheaper?

what's untrue about either of those? you think businesses are risking employment of precarious illegal labour just to avoid hiring black folks? o.O

not only are you apparently rejecting the fundamental economics of capital markets, but you're also apparently rejecting the fact that texas, which state notoriously looks the other way when businesses and contractors employ illegal labour at below-minimum wages, happens to have had a robust economy, creating over 50% of america's jobs in the years 2008-2011.

i'm not arguing for illegal immigration. i'm just saying that the reason illegal immigrants are popular with employers is because, paradoxically, their willingness to accept market value for their labour represents the true free market, while the legal american communities who are unable to find work are being hurt by the fact that the minimum wage Big Brother makes sure they get paid is actually too high for the unskilled labour they provide at the lowest end.

Work on that literacy thing. What is untrue is your claim that in the absence of government meddling there is no market for illegal alien labor.

That is simply not the case. We outlawed slavery a while back. Persons who have no legal existence in the US but are here none the less are ideal target for those for who canning an employee doesn't mean firing them. It means putting them in supermarkets across America. (Hat tip to Richard Pryor.)

Uncontrolled borders provides a steady flow of humans to mistreat in way that go far beyond low wages.

637 "What happens to those who are *incapable* of fully knowing what they are doing.

People like Jared Loughner for instance? "

there's a daniel something.

forget his last name, but he's a modern philosopher on the neurology of "free will", or, more pointedly, the lack thereof.

he makes the case that society has a moral incumbency to punish wrongdoers, even when those wrongdoers cannot be said to meaningfully have made a conscious decision to do wrong.

it's pretty much indisputable these days that were are little more than biomechanical slaves to our subconscious decision-making processes -- modern neuroimaging can detect the choice an individual is to make up to something like eight seconds before the individual believes that he has made the choice. the implications on libertarian free will are naturally rather obvious.

still, whether an individual can be said to be "responsible" for the genetic and developmental factors that led to his or her psychopathy, it is necessary that society maintain order -- and the punishment of wrongdoers, after all, is something that the subconscious decision-making machinery surely takes into account!

knowing that one can be killed in turn for killing another, conscious though processes aside, will manifest as a hesitation to kill another by those very same subconscious thought processes that essentially make our decisions for us. therefore, it is necessary for the maintenance of social order to punish behaviour that is "wrong", even if the old psychological models of consciousness are being supplanted by new, rather disconcerting information that we are little more than neural machines programmed by the sum of our genetics and experiences.

Not silly. Checked out some of the specialty stuff and went back to Word 2007. It has some bugs but I don't have to pay any *more* money, and most of the organizational tools (everywhere, for everything) are designed by OCD people *anyway* and can't be used by people who weren't born organized.

I just keep lots of notes.

The important things are to keep multiple backups, and to have an undo feature. Also don't keep your project in one huge file, even if you keep backups.

I use dropbox to backup between multiple computers and keep a copy online. For a writer, the amount of free storage will do you for, um, forever, probably.

I checked out Scrivener, Storybook, and WordForge, and went back to just using a word processor.

I always, for each story or scene, have two files, one for notes and one for the text itself - and then numbered copies for rewrites.

639 Chemjeff-

Buy the dark chocolate Thingee before hand...

Make your own raspberry sauce before hand...

(dead simple)

Bring your own empty stainless steel bowl (pop it into the freezer when she is searching for a vase for her flowers), a whisk, & small carton of heavy cream.

It's not really cooking!

Put the heavy cream in on the dairy shelf whilst you "chill the wine" when you first arrive.

Once dessert happens, if you two get that far...

Abashedly explain that you are not that much of a cook but that you really love the way dark chocolate tastes w/ Rasberry Sauce and some fresh whipped cream.

She will offer to brew some coffee (or be calling the police or be tearing your clothes off) probably...

Be prepared to pour little bits of heavy cream into a chilled bowl and giving yourself carpel-tunnel syndrome with the whisk to make some magic.

Well, but Loughner was found competent. He knew what was right and what was wrong.

Psychopaths, sociopaths, schizophrenics, and people with narcissistic personality disorder almost always know right from wrong. They just don't care. But they always try to cover their tracks, hide, and get away with what they do. If they genuinely didn't know right from wrong, they wouldn't try to hide their crimes.

I think everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. We all have evil thoughts, but most of us don't act on them. Some people are found not competent by the law, but that's always subjective. I don't know if there are any people who actually don't know the difference between right and wrong.

Some people suffer organic brain damage that prevents them from restraining themselves. This guy, for example, is always in trouble with the law.

http://tinyurl.com/c3ey7dr

Presumably, if we have souls that are freed when our bodies die, the soul will no longer be subject to the infirmities of the body. This guy's soul will no longer be influenced by his damaged brain, and though he'll still have the negative impulses we all have, he'll regain the impulse control that was taken from him when he lost half his brain. He can't really be held responsible for his actions if the brain matter that controls impulse was removed. Personally, I think he should locked up forever, but the courts disagree with me.

Maybe when we die, we're confronted with evidence of what we did in our lives, and if we're shocked by and sorry for the evil we committed in life, we go on to the next level or the reward or whatever. Those of us who are indifferent or who refuse to feel remorse go to the dark place, either forever or until they repent.

I've known several people who I'm convinced will never repent, no matter what. Regardless of the cost, they simply refuse to admit that they ever did anything wrong. My father is one such person, and my sister is another. And they've both committed terrible, unforgivable sins if not actual crimes.

I'd hate to be in their shoes, karma-wise.

what the fuck are you talking about?

slavery?

you're sitting here talking about "literacy", and you can't even make a coherent argument without invoking the ghosts of america's sinful past, complete with an utterly irrelevant joke about literally "canning" people.

TO WIT, the first paragraph has NOTHING to do the second: it is not an argument that there is a market for illegals in america that there are people who want to literally put folks in cans on supermarket shelves.

but i guess you're just one of those Really Smart People who don't have to rely on established economics and the hundreds-year-old theories of supply and demand in capital markets.

ROLLING MY EYES, chump.

"Uncontrolled borders provides a steady flow of humans to mistreat in way that go far beyond low wages.

Unless you regard enforcement of the laws against slavery just more government meddling."

again: what the fuck are you talking about?

are you seriously proposing that contractors and businesses treat illegal workers as chattel property? that, perhaps, they force them to do work for no pay at all, or perhaps that they physically beat them when they don't perform to standard?

perhaps you're proposing that illegal immigrants are selectively bred by their employers for more productive and less rebellious offspring?

there is NO RELATION WHATSOEVER between the involuntary servitude of slavery and the mutually voluntary labour contract of illegal immigration.

yes, it's certainly very probably that illegal workers are harmed in many cases by the lack of OSHA protections and inabilities to sue their employers when hurt on the job due to poor oversight or being forced to work in unsafe working conditions.

that does nothing to change the fact that, despite the knowledge that they have no legal protections and that in general, the type of labour satisfied by the illegal market is more dangerous than average, illegals still voluntarily commit themselves to their sub-minimum-wage labour contracts.

sounds a whole lot like slavery to me. -.-

no: because, barring the over-proponderance of trial-lawyer claims to workplace injury that are not the result of unsafe conditions or poor oversight, which is another question altogether, the expected cost of OSHA compliance, etc., is nearly insignificant when weighed against the savings versus artificially inflated labour costs, it's extremely unlikely that an employer would choose to employ a workforce which could be deported whole-sale at any time, given a single raid.

even in the current cost-saving climate, there are probably ZERO large-scale contractors and employers who would risk the extreme costs of having their entire crews deported by employing only illegal labour, no matter what the savings.

in fact, it has been reported that most employers who knowingly use illegal labour, cognisant of the ICE threat, make sure not to fill their entire forces with illegal labour, even in cities where a new crew could be picked up outside of any home depot at a moment's notice.

so i contend that, despite the attractiveness of the bullwhip, removing price controls on the labour market would be the fastest way to combat the "threat" of illegal immigration, which in any case isn't very much of a threat currently anyway since all border states except texas have been experiencing negative net illegal immigration since the financial crisis and the corollary drying up of the unskilled-labour markets.

if employers can employ reliable, undeportable domestic labour at market rates, they simply have little incentive to prefer illegal labour, unless they happen to be the sort of sadistic persons who enjoy putting their labourers in extreme danger just for the hell of it. and sorry, but there simply aren't enough individuals like that in a position to hire large numbers of labourers...the market has a funny way of denying particularly nasty people the success required to be a large-scale employer.

but whatever.

illegals.

because slavery.

BIG GOV'T TO THE RESCUE! -.-

Dropbox works on Mac (I had it on mine before I took that machine out of my lineup). There are other useful writing tools on Mac as well - do check them out, but if they don't help then drop them.

I find that if I note down the essence of an idea I can find that place later, usually. I tend to think very visually, very cinematically. I sit and listen to music and "dream" stories or scenes from stories.

If you find that notes don't work well for you then you need to block out as much time as you can get to write when you have that idea in your head.

You may not be writing for your husband. You may be writing for you.

Anyway, I'm kind of wordy (it's a bad writer habit). But then again, Stephen King and Ann Rice are kind of wordy. Don't let the fact that they are both douchebags dissuade you.

Think of your work as a sculpture. You vomit the idea onto the page, and that's like the initial selection of the stone. Editing is paring away what doesn't belong until the final story is revealed.

The hard part is giving up the really juicy, elegant phrases I always start with.

I dispute that notion.

The brain could be simply the machine that allows the three-dimensional, earthly functioning of the free will, emotions, personality, energy, and thought processes that constitute the soul.

Think of it this way: It's not that the brain creates the chemical reactions that people mistake for the soul, but rather that the brain and its chemical reactions are the means by which the soul is able to be manifested in the earthly realm.

A soul by itself can't exist in the earthly realm because it's not tangible. So, first it needs a housing. Secondly, it needs a process by which the free will, emotions, personality, energy, and thought processes can control that housing so that the soul can function in the earthly realm.

The solution is a brain that produces chemicals. The brain is a vehicle, transmitter, and governor all in one, but it's separate from the soul in the way that the eye is separate from vision. The eye is the means through which vision is manifested. The eye doesn't create vision; it channels it through a biomechanical process. Vision would exist even if there were no eyes. We know that because when we venture into areas inhabited only by eyeless creatures, we can still see.

As intangible energy, the soul couldn't function in the earthly realm unless it had both a housing and a biomechanical process that would channel the energy of the soul and operate the housing.

The brain and the chemicals aren't what make us human; they're the processes by which that which makes us human--our soul--is able to function in this particular plane of existence.

659 We choose to go to hell.

That's what I think, too. I don't believe that there's Someone sitting at a judge's bench who points a mighty finger at us and says, "You, sir, have sinned against me!" and pulls a lever that opens a trapdoor and drops us into eternal flames.

I believe that the kind of person we are determines the passages that are open to us. People blinded by hate, rage, anger, selfishness, sadism, arrogance, and dishonesty are simply unable to perceive the passages that are visible to those who haven't given in to total negativity and destructiveness. When you're distracted, you can't see or think clearly. You're more apt to get lose your way.

I believe that hell is an absence. It's a place of nothingness, darkness, sorrow, loneliness, and pain. It's like being lost in the forest.

665 "Think of it this way: It's not that the brain creates the chemical reactions that people mistake for the soul, but rather that the brain and its chemical reactions are the means by which the soul is able to be manifested in the earthly realm."

:3

then why, praytell, does the soul -- i.e., the self-aware individual -- believe he has made a decision long after his brain has actually made it for him?

if there were some dualist "soul"...some unphysical personhood that informed the biology, and not the other way around, then clearly that soul making the decision would precede the chemical reactions that you contend are manifested by some metaphysical soul.

unfortunately for your disputatiousness, it happens to be the case that the chemical reactions of the brain precede the awareness -- the soul's recognition -- of the decision being made. the brain itself has made the decision, allowing neurologists who are monitoring the electrical activity in the brain to correctly predict the decision before the self which is governed by the brain even realises that a decision has been made.

perhaps you just don't understand what you're arguing, and you're just jumping through nonscientific rhetorical hoops to justify your continued belief in the preposterous dualism of consciousness, or The Magical Self, but if the soul were to govern, from some "alternate plane of existence" (...seriously? xD), the chemical reactions of the brain, then it is straightforward to see that the decision would be registered by the self prior to the electrochemical activity of the brain that physically manifests the soul's decision.

again: it is precisely the other way around -- so sorry to say! xP

"Vision would exist even if there were no eyes. We know that because when we venture into areas inhabited only by eyeless creatures, we can still see."

...what kind of nonsense and illogic is this statement here?

we can see because we have eyes. should all live have evolved in places without light, such as did the species of complex, multicellular eyeless animals to which i assume you refer (being as the other kingdoms of life are most clearly eyeless), then, no, there would be no vision.

an eye -- or some kind of transduction of electromagnetic radiation into electrochemical signal for neurological processing -- is required for vision. there is, of course, no Magical Ghostly Self that can see absent phototransduction, and the fact that creatures with eyes can see creatures without eyes does absolutely nothing to "inform" us that "there would still be vision with no eyes". you haven't even included a train of logic leading to such a ridiculous conclusion -- you've just stated that because we have eyes, we can see where creatures that don't have eyes can't, that means that we could still see even if we didn't have eyes.

...what?

"As intangible energy, the soul couldn't function in the earthly realm unless it had both a housing and a biomechanical process that would channel the energy of the soul and operate the housing."

sorry, that's far too much magical thinking for me. you are invoking something for which there is utterly no evidence whatsoever because you are unable to apply occam's razor to the modern science of which in any event you are apparently extremely ignorant.

basically, you're saying "there is a soul because i say there is a soul, and so i am going to interpret the body according to my own preconceived notions".

that is not science, and it is not a dispute of repeatable scientific fact that you can invoke additional, completely unverifiable inventions of your creative imagination to characterise the body as some sort of a vessel for a Magical Ghostly Self.

and of course, it still does nothing to "dispute" the indisputable fact that the chemical activity in the brain takes place prior to the self-awareness that a decision has been made.

so much for a Magical Ghostly Self that supersedes the biological brain in the hierarchy of self-hood. even if you refuse to abandon your Magical Ghostly Self, if the chemical activity in the brain controls what the Magical Ghostly Self thinks and believes, then the idea that the self is no more than a slave to the neuroprocessing of the brain remains intact, Magical Ghostly Self or not.

but then again, what good are scientific experiments showing that the brain makes a decision long before the self registers that decision to someone who won't accept the conclusions of those experiments, anyway?

674 then why, praytell, does the soul -- i.e., the self-aware individual -- believe he has made a decision long after his brain has actually made it for him?

That's the fallacious argument called "begging the question." The thing to be proved is used as one of your
assumptions.

According to you, the brain has made the decision before the soul has, but my argument is that the biomechanical decision-making process entails the so-called time lag because that's how the machine works.

The jalopy body that houses the soul chugs along, the brain laying the biochemical groundwork for what evolves after eight seconds (or whatever) into a conscious decision. Since the time lag isn't felt by the soul, in essence it doesn't exist.

The inherent physical limitations of the neurons and chemicals require that the process begin long before the consciousness is aware of it.

You argument doesn't actually make much sense, because you're saying that the brain is autonomously making a decision that the consciousness later catches up to. If that were the case, what would be the biological function of consciousness? Why would we evolve individual thought? It would make much more biological sense for us to be like termites and have no individual sense of self.

If it's all just the brain secreting chemicals and making decisions on its own, consciousness is a hindrance.

you've just stated that because we have eyes, we can see where creatures
that don't have eyes can't, that means that we could still see even if
we didn't have eyes.

No, I didn't say that. You said that.

Actually, I gave up trying to plow through the rest of your post because your interpretations of my straightforward words were so off the mark that disputing what you would be a gigantic waste of time.

It's clear that you're personally invested in the notion that you have no soul and you feel deep antipathy towards those who disagree with you. Cool! I don't feel hostility toward those who disagree with me, but if I'm going spend irreplaceable moments of my life discussing it with them, I expect them to be coherent.

676 As for poor whats-her-name and her overwhelming load of guilt, two questions:

* Just what in the world did a urban-studies major think that she could contribute that would improve the economy of a Paraguayan village? They need engineers, farmers, mechanics - someone who can teach them how to improve their lives in the here-and-now. A bunch of half-remembered college lib-arts mumbo-jumbo isn't going to help dig a well or improve crop yields.

* Does this gal really, truly believe that the north is wealthy because it stole from the south? Wealth is the end-product of a culture that begins by respecting human autonomy and the right to property. None of the poor SOBs who are born into a Latino culture deserve it; but their misfortune is not my fault. But be of good cheer: the JEF and his hordes are busily wrecking the culture that generates wealth, so soon she won't have to go abroad to experience third-world poverty: she'll be living it right here.

679 "Is Jimi Ray hating on NaNo?"

oh, no. to the contrary, i love nanowrimo and any other sort of artists' community that fosters an environment wherein amateur (by which i mean non-professional, or those who don't do it for a living) artists can get encouragement and healthy criticism for their creative work.

it's just been rather obvious over the past six months or so that there are two types pf individuals that don't like me: the first, religious (and how natural to be disliked by members of a People Who Think Just Like Me Club), and the second, given to some inflated self-concept of their own expertise or uncanny ability.

merov happens to be a repeat offender on the second count -- and one that, contrary to her ludicrous above-the-fray protestations otherwise, can't seem to go a day without insulting me for no reason whatsoever.

it seems that she and others like her are, sadly, jealous of the fact that at a young age i have enjoyed quite a bit of success in my life, even in the face of multiple medical hardships and the undesirability of childhood foster care, and rather than celebrate my particular american dream, she has taken to spewing vicious hatred at a person whose real-life credentials makes him quite well-suited to exposing her utter lack of scientific expertise...a scientific expertise that she has apparently claimed in the past.

i would be remiss in failing to engage in fair-play turnabout, i think, by pointing out how ridiculous this modern-day fitzgerald is to celebrate her own "juicy, elegant prose" when she certainly hasn't any success in her life to corroborate such an unctuous boast.

still, i love nanowrimo, and if i were a middling creative writer with plenty of free time on my hands, i would probably be there, too -- i have the free time, i think, but as it stands, my creative writing is about as worthy as my cat's discourses on particle physics.

he's quite an intelligent cat, but... xP

680 By the way, I just looked up the experiment that claimed to prove that decisions were made by the brain eight seconds before the consciousness was aware of it.

Not surprisingly, it ain't exactly true.

The experiment was conducted in 2007 by John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin. People were told to press a button with either their right or left index fingers whenever they felt the urge, and to remember the letter that was showing on the screen when they made the decision. The experiment used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to reveal brain activity in real time as the volunteers chose to use their right or left hands.

The experiment claimed to show that the brain made the decision up to seven seconds ahead of time, but it was only 60 accurate at best, a percentage not much better than chance.

Oops.

Itzhak Fried, a neuroscientist and surgeon at the University of
California, Los Angeles, and the Tel Aviv Medical Center in Israel, did his own experiments and concluded that the chemical processes in the brain begin about 1.5 seconds before the conscious decision is made.

That's closer to my notion that the limitations of the flesh and chemicals involved require a "warming up" period, the way old TVs had to warm up. We know that there are layers of consciousness. Who's to say there isn't a precognitive aspect of our consciousness of which we're unaware, but which is in charge of the jelly that allows our thoughts to swirl around inside our head.

This precognition receives an alert that the decision is about to be made and begins the slow process of warming up our inefficient flesh and chemicals, which take 1.5 seconds to sort it all out, and then the final level of consciousness becomes aware of the decision.

The soul is not only one level of consciousness, or else we wouldn't have repressed memories, unconscious motivations, hidden resentments we ourselves are not even aware of, and so on.

What about split-second decisions? Let's say a guy suddenly thrusts a gun in your face and you shoot him dead in less than a second. The whole thing is over in two seconds. How the hell would that eight-second time lag work then? How would the brain make the decision to act eight seconds ahead of time when the entire incident lasted only two seconds?

At any rate, the claim that the brain makes the decision eight seconds before the consciousness is aware of it turns out, sadly, to be a not quite true. It was embellished for purposes of self-aggrandizement.

Oh, well.

Your own "scientific expertise" had a few holes blown in it by your mischaracterization of the Haynes experiment.

Either you were unaware that it was deeply flawed, or you deliberately exaggerated its effectiveness in order to bolster your position.
