It's become an annual tradition of the SEC. Late in the season, on a single weekend, like half the teams play non-FBS schools. Apparently because they imagine their conference so difficult they can all just mutually take a week off and play nobodies. Late fall cupcakes... (non-Hostess)... with the Conference musical chairs the past 18 months, many teams (such as Mizzu, T AM, etc) had cancel games with real Division I programs, and due to the late changes, could schedule 'appropriate' games as replacements... then there are some teams who want a breather before rivalry weekend

Easy to explain: every D1 school gets 2 cupcakes on the schedule every year, but ESPN/SEC reworked the early season schedule so in conference games happen very early now. Only chance to get in the second cupcake is this weekend prior to rivalry Saturday next weekend/weekend after. I'm at the Wofford game working TV and trust me, it sucks for everyone involved. Terrible football, but the Terriers get $$$ from the game.

The hallowed (just ask them) SEC plays a consistently higher percentage of non-NCAA power conference teams than any other power conference. I actually did the math (!!!) on this, using the records/schedules of every league from 2000-2011. Pretty interesting stats when I finished. Of course, the SEC will tell you that their conference is SO good that they don't need to play outside of it. Right. Saban actually questioning the lack of a decent opponent when Alabama had to play Utah in a bowl game. Which resulted in Utah absolutely 'pantsing' them on national TV. For all who believe in SEC dominance, fine. For the rest of us, a playoff system cannot come soon enough. When it's not a beauty pageant anymore, the SEC will face reality.
