Bad News: Meghan McCain Wants To See Some Changes In the GOP, Or She's Going to Stop Being a Republican
The hell of it is, the party is actually currently considering most of Meghan McCain's prescriptions. Second look at Meghan McCain?I know there are many out there, especially in the more conservative sphere, that regard me with disdain. I don’t fit into the traditional Republican box that the wingnuts who have hijacked my party think all Republicans should. For the last four years, I’ve been calling for Republicans to stop concentrating on social issues. I am a single woman in my 20s and that fact alone gave me the perspective that I don’t want to regulate a woman’s right to choice. I am pro-life, but because life is complicated, that choice is between a woman and her idea of a higher power. I believe if Roe vs. Wade were repealed, abortion would still go on. I care more about my economy, national security, and fiscal conservatism than I do about what other woman do with their bodies. It’s not my place, and I don’t believe it’s the government’s place, to make such decisions. I also don’t believe it’s the government’s role to tell gays and lesbians that they can’t be given the same opportunities in American just because of who they love. I think America needs a better immigration policy and immigrants who were brought here illegally as children shouldn’t be deported. I have said all of these things over the past four years and these issues have been important to the demographics that the Democrats carried on Election Day—single women, minorities, and young people. ... And if we don’t move forward, adapt, and become relevant again, the Republican Party isn’t going to survive. It will just continue to alienate more moderate voters like myself. If I don’t see some changes in the next four years, I’m going to consider registering as an Independent in 2016.

I'll add one thing. I think it might help if we didn't come across as so "we hate the environment". I'm skeptcial of MMGW - but so what? What is wrong with clean energy or at least making sure voters who care about the environment don't see us as crazy. Her point is stupid. This election we ran the most moderate candidate, who ran completely on economic issues.
He lost. The GOP ran away from social issues and it was a disaster. The Democrats defined us based on gaffes, and ask Scott Brown how being a social liberal/fiscal conservative works. The NorthEastern Republican strategy is an abject failure.
Now on to Meggie.
The writer is someone who makes her living as a 'token' conservative who, because she has a famous father, has a column.
Her schtick is that she's a Democrat that says she's a Republican. She reflexively criticizes the party 'as a woman in her 20s', as if she has some kind of pulse on the issues of today.
There is no reason to listen to her on this subject, any more than we should listen to a guy wearing a "DOOM" sign in a major metropolitan city claiming the lizard people are going to eat us.

I've got a kid that is libertarian/conservative. Has the same point of view. I agree, gay people should get the same equal treatment in terms of being in a partnership and having equal benefit sharing (healthcare from employer) and inheritance type issues. Just don't call it "marriage" that is a time honored sanctuary that you must not violate. If the "other side" of the issue would be a little more tolerant of those that want to honor marriage, the institution that helps create a future with humans still in existence....then perhaps we could come to better terms on the two sides of the aisle. I know somebody in Colorado who has a solar array and gets some sort of "credit" on his power bill every month. IIRC the power company is required to provide this subsidy to people who buy the solar equipment, which he did. But I believe the other ratepayers are actually subsidizing this scheme.

My 50 year old gas range with pilot lights kept working during the three-day Sandy power outage. I was able to heat up the leftovers that were thawing in my freezer and never had to touch my non-perishable stockpile. Win-win.

Small residential wind turbines have been THE biggest single bust in the "green" energy movement. There's a reason why the turbines are getting bigger and bigger every year. Because scaling laws murder their efficiency when they're small.
Of course, the very biggest wind turbines still have the problem associated with them producing power only intermittently and randomly. This inheres in the nature of wind itself.
To this, add the issue that once a turbine gets above a certain size, the physical stresses upon things like the gearbox then become extremely difficult engineering problems. Gearboxes were billed as lasting 25 to 30 years. Except there are wind farms built out less than a decade ago where failed gearboxes are now quite common. Fixing this, atop a structure many stories high, is nontrivial and very expensive.

Please provide examples. I believe the main thrust of the platform of the Republicans was to create a better economy to help the people that are poor and down on their luck. You are correct, personal partnerships and equal protection as defined in the constitution is fine. But marriage is the pillar of society. Trample on that and you trample on the foundation of what holds things together. Look at what has happened to the inner city since LBJ instilled his policies. The family has fallen apart and now the inncer cities are rampant with crime, murder, and hate. Look at the crime rates in the inner city before 1967 and then after. Striking difference...directly correlate to unwed mother and divorce etc.
I'm fine with gay marriage as long as you legally have the states vote for it. You need to keep it out of the Courts and let each state decide. It needs to be decided by the voters and in accordance with each states constitution to properly change the law. If the people vote for it, then that's what our country is all about. I would not be upset if it was legally voted for....as we claim to abide by the laws and rules of governance, so we can live by them. If the gay movement can convince enough people to support them, then that's fine. Have at it. Next up, we need to start supporting the persecuted Mormon's, who were once driven from this land, simply because they believed in Polygamy. Why isn't anyone supporting them?

The GOP basically has a coalition that's running the same playbook as if the demographics were frozen from 1980. They keep bragging about how "Reagan won 49 states" but the nation has changed, just like the Democrat coalition has changed.
I would LOVE it if Democrats kept running Michael Dukakis liberals that wanted to make capital punishment an issue and were soft on crime, but they moved on and won on other issues.
The biggest obstacle I see for the GOP is that it needs to stop trying to be the "Church Party", that's far and away the biggest impediment. We can't be the political party that's only for people who go to Church every Sunday, we just aren't that nation anymore.

The government has an interest in whatever keeps the peace. Children raised in poverty, without adequate parents, are likely to break the peace (read any of the studies out there about one-parent households and kids in jail, either as kids or adults later). Marriage, between one woman and one man, means that one person is busy doing the procreating and diaper changing while the other is doing the supporting and generally keeping the family off the public teat. These are all good things that are in the interest of the state.
So far, nobody has shown how two guys can procreate, nor operate in a manner in a family that is nearly as beneficial as a married couple, i.e. one woman and one man. While it is technically possible for two guys to raise kids, so far the psychological studies seem to validate the traditional wisdom, which is that one parent should be the mom and one should be the dad, and two dads just doesn't work as well. Some data shows that without two examples of how to be in life, i.e. how a woman is and how a man is in society, kids are not likely to learn how to be in society without becoming a detriment thereunto.
Basically, the state has no vested interest in Bob and Tom getting married. It doesn't work nearly as well as Bob and Sally, so why should the state get involved when Bob and Tom want to raise a few kids? It ends up being involved when Bob and Tom start screwing their way through the phone book and the kids end up in public funded therapy, but not in a good way.

Marriage and its moral normativity dates back to pre-Christian Rome (and before). Homosexuality was perfectly well tolerated but there were no same-sex marriages. Marriages established parentage. What would be the point of a same-sex marriage? Polygamy leads to a shortage of available women, a problem that China is dealing with right now.
What is most disturbing about the same-sex marriage argument is how it assumes the worship of the state. There is no "banning" of marriage going on. It is just that the state will not issue a license for every arrangement under the sun.

However, in the current cultural environment, anything other than glowing approval and wholehearted acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle is automatically denigrated, screamed at and called "homophobic." Just because I don't care for rutabaga, and I don't partake of it, this does not, under any normal definition of the word, make me unnaturally afraid of rutabaga.

That one is easy. You draw the line at involving children. Only legal adults may enter in a marriage (or civil union or choose the term of you prefer).
As for the children of these families, you apply the same laws to protect children as in traditional families. Christian monogamy is no protection for children, the number of dysfunctional to downright criminal families of that type is depressingly large.

We don't think about the issues anymore, and parties have made it 10 times easier not to. It also makes it 10 times easier for the media to politically devastate an entire 50% of people in this country.

That is not the argument at all. What is being argued is that the economic unit made up by traditional marriage is in the interest of the government and the unit made up by a gay couple simply does not fit that bill. The same can be said of the one parent family--not filling the needs of the children or of society.

You can argue SSM and bring up polygamy and some people will dismiss it. "Oh, that's not going to happen," they say. "Why?"
Well they sputter but basically say that it can't happen because they don't want it to happen or they can't conceive of it.
At least Grumpy is honest and a lot of SSM supporters would turn around if they thought that SSM would lead to polygamy.
Which is why marriage should not be declared by dimbulb judges (I repeat myself) to be a "right."

Now, the latest research I saw indicated that 3.4% of the population was gay. So, in essence, you're telling me that the law has to allow for the whims of 3.4% of people, to the offense of the other 96.6%. Sorry, it just shouldn't work that way. And prior to the 1960s and the beatification of the minority, it never did.

I came to the same conclusion a while ago. I roll my eyes whenever someone bleats the phrase, "get the government out of marriage!" What the blatherer really means is, "change and/or expand the definition by which the government sanctions marriage!" which is the exact OPPOSITE of "getting the government out of marriage." Since the nuclear family is considered so passe these days, I'm in support of completely removing government from the equation starting with no joint returns. While I'm at it, I'd also like to see elimination of exemptions for home ownership and children.

Reminds me of what happened to steel in this country in the early '80's. The steel making went over seas. The only thing done here is forming, cutting and shaping and a few specialty alloy mills. No more $20 hr union jobs (equiv today of about $40) and overtime. With ridiculous work rules. Knew a guy ran a crane. Actual work (hah work sitting in a crane all day) time was about 3 hrs a day. Rest of the time he sat in the crane. couldn't make him do anything else. Needless to say he wasn't happy when USS shut down the Gary, IN mills and Indiana Harbor etc.

I became something of a flashlight snob in my recent experience in the dark week. It is sort of funny. Maybe a decade ago maglites where where it was at. Now of course it is all led lights running off of aa, aaa, or cr123s. It was funny in the night in the lobby to see a couple of guys my age show up swing the 3 or 4 d cell maglites wheezing and gasping a splotch of pale orange light on the floor and some guys with some 500 lumen pocket spotlight.
Maybe it is a guy thing. Sometimes you show up with the coolest gear on a trip and sometimes you show up with antiques. Everyone always knows who is who.

the thing is that, while it's true the GOP's identification with the religious right does turn off some young voters obviously, these types of comments always just serve to confirm someone's preexisting biases. since Boortz is a hyper-libertarian it's nothing to him to suggest these things. If he, I dunno, acknowledged that a lot of Americans don't share his complete free-marketeer ideas either, that'd be more impressive, but he can't cuz his own views can't be unpopular of course.

I thought the visuals were great, along with the acting. The story, not so much. As ACE said in his review yesterday, too many stupid people in it. I will add that I didn't care for the fact they made the engineers giant humans instead of another breed of alien. Spaights original script is an improvement over what they ended up with, but it was still mundane. But to each their own.

Hmm, reminds me of my parents fighting, when I was a kid. Mom was all quiet like at 1st, dad would blow his top get LOUD, then mom would play the martyr.
So as kids, we just *knew* dad started it. Always.

Reminds me of this "Social issues" crap. R's have their views/values, and vote/legislate from that standpoint. Then election time rolls around, and the D's start screaming that the R's want to "take away" something they *can NOT* take away.

hate the environment". I'm skeptcial of MMGW - but so what? What is
wrong with clean energy or at least making sure voters who care about
