Petraeus: Some Parts of Susan Rice's "Presentation" Came From the White House, Not Intelligence, and Not Me

And other Things Which Would Have Been More Useful To Know Three Weeks Ago.

David Petraeus is going to tell members of Congress that he “knew almost immediately after the September 11th attack, that the group Ansar al Sharia, the al Qaeda sympathizing group in Libya was responsible for the attacks,” CNN reports.

In his closed door meeting on the Hill, “[Petraeus] will also say he had his own talking points separate from U.N. ambassador Susan Rice. [Hers] came from somewhere other in the administration than his direct talking points,” Barbara Starr of CNN reports, referencing a source close to Petraeus.

The former CIA director will move to further himself from comments that didn’t accurately characterize the terror attack that Rice made 5 days after on national television shows.

“When he looks at what Susan Rice said,” CNN reports, “here is what Petraeus’s take is, according to my source. Petraeus developed some talking points laying it all out. those talking points as always were approved by the intelligence community. But then he sees Susan Rice make her statements and he sees input from other areas of the administration. Petraeus — it is believed — will tell the committee he is not certain where Susan Rice got all of her information.”

Now, for weeks and weeks, we've been told that these Talking Points, as they're called, came directly from the "Intelligence Community."

Now a very high ranking member of that community says they didn't come from the IC at all, and thinks they came from the White House -- which was our strong suspicion before the Administration began telling the media this came from the IC.

The other thing he's claiming is that while he initially briefed Congressmen that there was some "evidence" for the Administration's story (the spontaneous protest), this was "disproved over time" -- in other words, "I didn't perjure myself, because even though what I said was wrong, I didn't know it was wrong when I said it."

But he's also claiming now that he new this was terrorism "almost immediately."

It appears he lied for Obama when it was critical that he lie for Obama. And now he's doing a Modified Limited Hang-Out, telling mostly the truth, while maintaining he also told the truth when he told a different account of the truth.

And I wonder why he'd do that.

What's 18,000 more on food stamps and now that the election is over who cares about an uptick in the UE rate?

I was in line behind a woman who looked very well fed at the local market the other day. She used her food stamp debit card to buy several packages of premium beef custom cut by the butcher.

Last night I had Thurs dinner with lib friends (I had cancelled last week). Came with a presentation of screenshots showing the 1 million ObamaPhone.net users in Ohio, the 50% increase in food stamps since O's been in office, how they skyrocketed in Oct but delayed release of the numbers til after the election, and the star of my slideshow was a WaPo (publication acceptable to over educated libs) talking about the rise in food stamp use by university students. Then I explained my new policy of getting separate checks because they always drink and eat more and I am tired of spitting the bill equally. It was a good night.

They meant the "Smarts Diplomacy Community" ...the ones who couldn't accurately translate a single word into Russian (a language we've had to evesdrop in and translate for well over half a century).

Smarts ... Intelligence ... same thing for retards and America-haters.

That said, Petraeus himself was happy to lie his ass off for this America-hating junta through the same time. There is not one single person in this Indonesian junta that is trustworthy. Orange jumpsuits for all of them.

I do not grudge them the natural, spontaneous outburst of joy and relief when they learned that the hard ordeal would no longer be required of them at the moment; but they should know the truth. They should know that there has been gross neglect and deficiency in our defences; they should know that we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road; they should know that we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies.

"Thou are weighed in the balance and found wanting."

And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigour, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time." -- Winston Churchill, October 5, 1938

When a general throws away his chance to be his generation's President Eisenhower, he's pretty well liberated. The issue now isn't what they have on Petraeus, it's what he has as a baseline motivation. What he has is a deep faith and loyalty to the power structure itself. Democrat, Republican, irrelevant. His version of America is the halls of power. That's his team. The CIA jersey fits just as well as the Army one.Petraeus isn't being blackmailed; he's simply caught between his own personal beliefs and an unfortunate private failing. Even without Broadwell in the picture, he's be just as reluctant to act in a manner that discredits the integrity of the national power structure. He's an Atlas who won't shrug, no matter how much he's taken advantage of.

Allen, I think cheating on your spouse is not considered one of those things that cost a military man his honor. If it was, most of the high ranking officers wouldn't have it.

Whether you consider it so or not is probably not his concern at this point. He knows there are fellow officers out there with their own secrets, and it's possible he will fall on his sword to protect them.

Honestly, we really have no way of knowing which direction this takes, but I believe he at least thinks there is a way for him to salvage some of what he values. The question is: what does he value?

No doubt there were a number of federal laws violated in the conduct of his affair (improper use of personal email accounts - I suspect there are laws circumscribing their use for personnel with security clearances, improper care with classified documents, etc.) If he says anything to put Obama's admin in jeopardy, Holder is just waiting to lower the boom. If he behaves, well, his resignation will be sufficient punishment. And that is that.

She is not phased so much by socialism but she thinks Barry is a dishonest hack so she mostly just listens to the other friend and me debate. The other friend is a loyal Democrat but a closet fiscal conservative. Over the past year we've had some intense conversations about social welfare and she's really getting sick of all the takers; she's a hardworking self-made professional and investor, and frequently makes statements like "when I was young, we made our own way." That's why I chose the "slides" on food stamps and free phones. Knowing that she gets most of her news from NPR, a major liberal newspaper in our state, MSNBC, and CNN, I assumed that she was unaware of the these reports. She questioned the sources of my information but I could tell at heart that she was disturbed. At one point she handed my iPad back to me and said "I'm losing my appetite, here." So I considered it a successful presentation overall.

Have to disagree, sven. When a marriage is clearly over due to one spouse being a despicable, lying scumbag criminal, I'd rather get half the house than let it burn down and then finalize the divorce.

The GOP needs to hold fast. Don't agree to anything stupid. Force the Senate to pass a budget (which they won't) or just let the sequester (which we all howled that the Weeping Boner had fucked up by ever agreeing to in the beginning). No more debt limit increases. Period. Keep the house standing (barely, as it is) until the divorce is final.

Of course, given who's in charge of the House, little chance of any of this. How these idiots could re-elect the Weeping Boner is just astounding. But ... the above is my recommendation and hope. Holding the line on the debt limit is of utmost importance. The only trade I could envision for raising the debt limit is a full repeal of ObamaScare ... yeah ... I know, as if.

I do have great interest in the fate of the America-hating incompetent he worked for, however. And, as a result of their actions, the MFM who have been in the tank for him.

Slight disagreement AG. I look at it this way: If I meet someone new, my judgement of them is basically a 0. I have no feelings about them as a person one way or the other. They can increase or decrease my respect for them by their actions. However, if I meet a person in uniform, or that I know is in the service, they're automatically in the plus column for me. Again, their actions will determine where they go from there.

Pointing out the the military has members who are heroic has nothing to do with the "honor" myth. West got cashiered out for his heroism.Would he get up and applaud the good generals in the papers the last couple of weeks and their honor which is beyond the ken of mortal man.In Iraq and Afghanistan, the militaryhas been more than happy to go after people involved in the most deadly fighting imaginable for trumpedup violations of rules of engagement(capturing hearts and minds more important than their lives). The "scat porn" was an image of a guy who shit himself bungee jumping, hanging upside down on the bungee cord in all his glory.

236 The other thing he's claiming is that while he initially briefed
Congressmen that there was some "evidence" for the Administration's
story (the spontaneous protest), this was "disproved over time" -- in
other words, "I didn't perjure myself, because even though what I said
was wrong, I didn't know it was wrong when I said it."

No, I think what Petraeus is saying now is that he new it was a terrorist attack almost immediately, but there was a question about motivation. The YouTube video theory was eliminated after he briefed Congress on Sept. 14th.

There was never any evidence that it was a spontaneous protest.

251 Israeli tanks and troops massed outside Gaza and the military said on Friday it was calling up 16,000 reservists, signs of a possible imminent invasion of the Palestinian enclave after 48 hours of air strikes.

Israel’s warplanes, drones and helicopters appeared to shift focus from suspected Palestinian rocket sites to the northern Gaza frontier, where their bombs created incursion corridors by clearing landmines or guerrilla gun nests.

The mobilisation was anything but secret and details put on social media by the Israeli military appeared to be a clear warning to the Hamas Islamists that govern Gaza to push for a truce.

“It is not our intention to go to war, and we are hopeful that this operation will not take a minute more than required,” Israeli President Shimon Peres said.

Since being fought to a standstill in its 2006 war against Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, Israel has been honing the training of its regular troops and could mount a land invasion of Gaza at short notice.

I'm trying to figure out where Petraeus fits in the spectrum of American war leaders. He's a fairly big fish in a fairly small pond. He's more a Winfield Scott or a George Dewey than a Dwight Eisenhower or Ulysses Grant. 'His war' is closer in scope to the Phillipine Insurrection (both in its casualty count and in its peripheral relationship to US interests of the time) than to any of the 'big' ones.

Same when joining the military. It is assumed that person understands that he has joined a 'caste' that may have to put their lives on the line to protect others who will not be putting their lives on the line.

So yes, being in the military automatically gets a level of respect from methat I don't give to others until such time your actions require reconsideration of that respect.

I think integrity is part internal part external. Those who live by the word do not need external guidance. When a failure in integrity is met with a firing, jail sentence, a bull whipping on a lamp post or a firing squad. You will see integrity make a comeback.

Even if the timeline is disputed, a timeline is a series of facts in chronological order. Take each disputed fact, one-by-one, and determine which version is correct. At the end, you have a true timeline.

How did facts and truth become disputable elements in our society, roughly equivalent to opinions?

Anyone who voluntarily places their life on the line in defense of country gets automatic cred in my book. Like I said, that's not a "forevermore" thing. Their actions determine things from there. 307 For the sake of clarity then, can we agree that while it may be true to say honoring your marital vows is an honorable thing, from the perspective of military men, it's not included in their definition of Honor?

If so, then the question is still on the table: does David Petreaus have any Honor left in him?

OT

Stocked up at the Hostess store thismorning.
Cashier union, too. I asked her if she got to vote on any of this and she said that it was all out of their control. The settlement was decided on by a judge and when the bakers struck that was it.
The driver said today is his last day but she hasn't heard yet. He told the cashier to use all her paid time off and she has more coming as of next week. Had.
A completely derelict looking man was loading a completely derelict car and said he is a farmer. Said lots of pigs and cows will miss all the free Hostess food.
BTW, did you know that unions now have been given the green light for access to non-union workers home address and telephone numbers? So they can harass them and scare their kids?

Bingo! If he had any honor at all he would have resigned and spilled the beans that day.

Of course, Petraeus was doing shitheaded things long before he got to CIA. He was another of the "hearts and minds" idiots and he was happy to criticize Americans for exercising our Constitutional right to free speech when he was overseas, giving lunatic muzzies an excuse to continue their lunacy.

I never liked Petraeus and I was never impressed with his "genius" at the notion of being able to temporarily buy off some arabs. Anyone with any understanding of history knows that arabs can aways be bought off for some time, but eventually they turn around and stab you in the back with no notice. That is arab culture and it has been for millenia. It's the desert way.

Posted by: Infidel at November 16, 2012 12:06 PM (O/fK

That been the only question all along. He's certainly a man who has worked, sacrificed and fought for a cause his entire life. Was that cause his career or his country? How blurred does that distinction become for a man in his position.Petraeus is clearly a man of considerably achievement and purpose. What you see now is a man whose personal honor may have slipped, but his fealty to the institution of national defense is unwavering. It's honor, of a sort, but arguably very deeply misplaced.

Boot’s attack on West is an effort to defend a surpassingly foolish
statement in which Gen. David Petraeus cast Israel as the source of all
America’s woes in the Middle East. To his great discredit, the general —
in a Clintonesque fashion which, as we shall see, is probably not a
coincidence — simultaneously denied making the statement, grudgingly
admitted making it while minimizing its significance, and accused West
and others of misrepresenting his views. In fact, the general’s critics
quoted his words at length, placed them in unmistakable context, and
drew from them the same commonsense conclusion drawn by Israel’s gleeful
critics — for whom Petraeus is the hero of the moment.
