Gallup: 45% Want Equal Tax Hikes and Spending Cuts

A plurality. 40% want the budget balanced with mostly/only spending cuts. 11% want it balanced with mostly/only tax hikes.

Adding the two tax-heavy groups together and you have 56%.

But the thing is, Obama talks about a "balanced approach," ad nauseam, and yet never proposes one. His actual proposal is to raise taxes by three times the size of the pittance of cuts he's proposed. And of course he wants the tax hikes now. The cuts.... eh, they can wait.

I'd sure like to see this "balanced approach" Obama talks about so much, on paper. An equal amount of tax hikes and spending cuts would in fact be a far more right wing proposal than he's actually put forward.

His actual plan is about as balanced as, say, France's Socialists are implementing.

The French economy has been stuck at zero percent growth for months, while unemployment has climbed to above 10 percent — and all signs point to an oncoming recession.

Sounds like a plan. Let's do that.

I'm finding the gravitational pull of the Let It Burn caucus growing increasingly strong and increasingly irresistible.

Marvelous. Has anyone mentioned to them that the spending cuts never happen, because Congress always, without exception, says "Hey, more money! Let's find places to spend it!" and "forgets" to cut anything?

Here's a proposal that would poll really well: Tax everybody in America besides me to fix the deficit.

Who wouldn't be up for that? And aren't we just working back from "me" or 1 person to the 56% who don't pay anything meaningful in taxes anyway? Who gives a shit how many people are willing to let other people solve their problems for them? Who can claim a mandate by pointing to the support of people who will not be contributing?

Other than TFG, of course.

Obama's stated policy, of cutting spending $1 for every $3 of tax increases, is only supported by 11-15% of the public. Obama's position is extreme. Of course, don't hold your breath waiting for the liberal media to report that.

I wouldn't even bet on getting $1 of spending cuts for every $3 in tax increases. Obama likes to talk about cutting spending, but doesn't actually do it.

Oh it's industrial grade suck. It's just I see no other medicine than harsh reality to bring the electorate back to its senses. I think of it this way, with the demographic shift, industrial grade suck, is where we are headed, like it or not. The only decision we have some measure of say in is how fast we get there. We can fight fight fight, and prop prop prop this thing up, and we can drag it out maybe for a few decades. Or we can implement the Liverpool Care Pathway for the US and get it done this decade, when those of us who lived in the 80's are still alive and can remember a free and prosperous country. So when we hit rock bottom there is that living memory of a free country.

It's a huge gamble, with momentous quantities of suck, but, I think it's the best shot we have of bringing freedom back in our lifetime and providing a future for the next generation.

95 It's a great idea, but it's too late. Electorate too dumb.

No, they're not too dumb. Or, rather, they're being dumb is not actually a hurdle which needs to be overcome.

One of the problems is that we say it, and then we try to explain *why* it works. But that doesn't matter, we just have to show that it does. It's the Roddenberry Principle (don't explain how it works, and people won't ask) applied to political realities.

Hope
that infrastructure degrades to the point that our water is undrinkable?
That the cities are uninhabitable? That those trees that fall across

impacted so significantly that our aged and infirm have a difficult time
finding enough food to survive?

I'm tempted too, but let's understand what will happen before we advocate for it.

Adding the two tax-heavy groups together and you have 56%.

Guarantee that number plummets if you say the cuts mean slashing SS and Medicare. Oh, and a balanced budget? It is to laugh. How will you double tax receipts without gutting the economy?

I don't care what any poll says. We have decades of elections proving there is no penalty for routinely funding gubmint sugar by deficit spending. Voters WANT deficit spending. Another meaningless poll. Like those saying that the public hates Congress, while in reality they often return their own representative incumbent to office over and over again. Nationally Pelosi is deeply unpopular, yet she is electorally unassailable in her district, and I promise you most of her constituents would say Congress is severely dysfunctional if a pollster asked them that question.

Tax increases do not increase revenue. At BEST they increase revenue far less than predicted.

If you want to see the deficit reduced solely through tax rate manipulation, you have to lower tax rates.

164 The key to making the "Let It Burn" strategy work is appearing at all times to be striving to prevent the conflagration.
People are never grateful to the folks who said, "I told you so." Rather than accept blame for their own mistakes, they will blame the people who they think should have saved them from those mistakes. Remember John Edwards telling his aide (who had warned him to break it off with Rielle Hunter), "Why didn't you come to me like a f*cking man and tell me to stop?"
Thus the GOP must appear to the voters to be trying everything in their power to achieve a reasonable compromise - a REASONABLE compromise, not a capitulation - so that when the car goes over the cliff, it will be clear that Obama and the Democrats are the ones with their hands on the steering wheel and their foot on the gas propelling it "FORWARD!"

166 Yes, the definition of what Let It Burn means does matter. It's short and catchy, but there's a lot of subtext missing. Here's a short definition --

TFG submits his plans and the GOP votes 'present'.

That's pretty good, but there are some things we really cannot just roll over on. Card check, for example. Unfettered illegal immigration reform. Banning guns. So I'd add to the definition the word fiscal. His fiscal plans.

Obama talks about global warming. Republicans pass the "Obama antiglobal warming tax" which levies a $3 per gallon tax on gasoline.
Obama talks about gun control legislation. Republicans pass a $1000 tax per gun sold "Obama gun control tax".
Obama talks about birth contorl. IN the House repblucans pass a "Obama birth control access tax" of $5000 for every business for every employee they employ so that women can have free birth control from the govt.
etc

169 If you want to see the deficit reduced solely through tax rate manipulation, you have to lower tax rates.

I said debt, not deficit. The only way I'd support tax increases to pay off the debt is, as I said, after three years of no deficit.

Which I realize is the same thing as saying I don't support tax increases at all but it sounds all compromisey.

170 Elimination of the tax will cost Treasury about $46 billion in refunds,

should be offset by higher tax revenue from a strong economy, Snow said

174 That telephone tax to fund the Spanish-American War? Did they actually end it (a hundred years after the end of the war), or just redirect the funds?

They did finally end it......and you are right, 100 years after the reason for the tax was enacted.

And on another note, why did they pass the telephone tax to fund the Spanish-American war? Because it was a tax "on the rich" because, at the time, only rich people had phones.

Hmmmmmmm.......think there might just be a lesson here?

Since I killed the previous thread with this, I'll repost it here (so's I can kill this thread too).

Do the krugmans of the world really believe their economic ideas work or do they know they don't and are purposely causing job losses to get more people in the welfare wagon to grow their voting block?

It's a little bit of both, IMO. What passes for economics education these days contains nothing of what I learned back in the '70's. Back then, it was well understood that wealth was created through capitalism. Any mention of "exploitation" came later, as Leftardismness began to take hold.

Notice the emotional factor and its weight in the concept of "exploitation." Note the hollowness of the charge. The concept of working in exchange for money is totally ignored, as is trade among nations. Little Billy Ayers based his whole psychotic writings on this false premise, which he still preaches today, wrongly.

In a free market, employees (and I use that word instead of the Socialist term "worker" that is suddenly becoming so popular) are free to seek other employers, better pay and benefits. The heavy hand of government, with its rules and regulations, now makes that virtually impossible.

There is a direct correlation between the amount of government intervention in the economy and a decrease in growth, as we are all seeing. What was once common knowledge is now considered "radical" by the radical leftists who have infiltrated the education indoctrination system. Want to turn this around? Start waging war against the outright lies taught in our schools and colleges.

The income tax when initially implemented was "only on the rich" and was only supposed to be some small number (like 3%) or something really low. I think I've even seen quotes from the politicians of the times saying that it would never be used against the working man....or some spiel. But they new eventually their future Kommrades could then turn it against the working man, as their future Kommrades hadn't promised this.....and this was before Kommrades were Kommrades....before 1917.

Now we are to believe that they intend to only raise taxes on the rich. A year from now, "this worked so well that we will now raise taxes on "upper middle class earners" meaning, anyone above $30k or some low number.

My "Let it Burn" contribution -our Congressmen and Senatorsshould announce that "the People Have Spoken" and simply cease opposing the Obama agenda at all - give him everything he wants on a 100% party line vote. Tell people up front "We're doing this because we want people to know who's fault the mess is in four years. You blamed Republicans for all of his failures for the last four years, from Bush to our 'Party of No' Congress. He can own the next four."

If the economy rebounds on its own despite his policies (unlikely with OCare kicking in, among other disasters), so be it. That's the only downside I see. Does anyone think we'll really be able to accomplish anything in opposition until 2016 ? Or that our present crop of leadership even intends to change business as usual in DC ?

Worried about killing innocent Libyans ?

How many "innocent Libyans" were present ?To the extent this claim might be true (which is highly doubtful), add four more American deaths to the "no collateral damage" death toll. I think the difference is I'm the firefighter and I've taken the phone off the hook. The arsonists are trying to get in touch with me to put out the fire but they can't. They realize that because THEY CAN"T GET THROUGH TO 911 they can't blame the result of the fire on anyone but themselves, so they have to start tossing water on the fire, gathering hoses, doing what they can to put it out, all by themselves.

It's a minor distinction, but in politics is a world of difference.

I just don't give a shit anymore. I really can't care about those who make 3-4x what I do if they don't care themselves. They are smart people - they have to have some sort of intelligence to bring down that type of coin - so maybe they know more than me.

“We’ve got to make sure that we are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, big anything,” Jindal told POLITICO in a 45-minute telephone interview. “We cannot be, we must not be, the party that simply protects the rich so they get to keep their toys.”

Jindal is making crap up about how Romney presented his plans for the country. He also seems butthurt because he was a Perry supporter who was criticized for his Texas version of the Dream Act. So Jindal does want to coddle to the takers because he thinks Romney was wrong to oppose the Dream Act. There is more about the Jindal philosophymuch like their is more to Christie.

They wanted increased spending on hand outs, but they didn't want to pay the taxes for them. Which in turn built up a enourmous debt.

When the bill comes thru and they don't want to pay it, the American people chose to reelect Obama, with a democrat Senate and a Republican House. Obama and the senate are there to keep the spending on full blast, the Republicans are there to blame for all the consequences.

345 Repeating myself...
When will these nitwits wake up and realize that Obama has no interest in avoiding the fiscal cliff. He knows we're heading into recession no matter what and when the "negotiations" with the Repubs break down he can blame the downturn on them. The tax increases will (in his economic pea brain) bring in more revenues that he can use to cement his power. The 20+ million additional people that are thrown out of work will become dependents of the government and greatful for the largesse he dispenses that provide them a confortable life of EBT, rent subsidies, Obama phones, etc. that allow them tosleep in and playing XBox all night. From Obama's viewpoint there is absolutely no downside to going over the fiscal cliff. Even if the Repubs cave in and give him everything he asks for he'll just keep upping his demands until it gets to the point that the Repubs can't give anymore without all them being Tea Partied in 2014. Even then we end up with 435 house + 20 Senate Aikens, Mourdocks, Angles, McDonnels in the races which will lead to California like control for the Dems at a national level. Better to call Obama's bluff, hold to principles, go over the cliff, prepare for the collapse and be ready to rebuild.

Or is the flaming image that you like?

Let It Burn -
Look at it like this. Not all forest fires are created equal. They don't all get attacked with an all out assault of the fire brigade. IF they are deemed to be cleansing, they are allowed to burn, to consume the dead wood and leave behind a healthier ecostructure.
That what Let It Burn means. We in the conservative movement have been railing against tax hikes since 88. Have been pro-spending restraint. Now we have those in power who want to increase tax rates and have never met a government program they did not like. They can own it. There will be pain, but we will as Americans take care of our own, without the federal government dictating who gets taken from and who gets given to.
And in the end, the country will be stronger and healthier.

I'm torn between Nick and Nora at the moment.

Alex, serious question - where are you located, what part of the country? If you are in any of the Babylons - New York, LA, Chicago... - is there any way you could relocate?

I'm in NWNC so actually not that bad a place so far as LIB. I'm here because the 'rents are here and until such time, hopefully many many many years from now, as the 'rents aren't here, here I shall be. The 'rents have been informed that if things get bad enough I'm moving us all to the Republic of Texas.

Is your job portable? Where anyone is at is likely to become increasingly important.

I could do what I do pretty much anywhere so that's not a consideration. There's also the fact that I'm not too proud to scrub toilets if needs must.

397 Let It Burn is not rooting for the inferno, it is acknowledging it is coming.

Let It Burn is giving the left the consequences of their actions.

Let It Burn is the result of a struggle where, to paraphrase WarGames, "The only way to win the game is not to play."

Let go of the rope, let the other side win, and fall down into the mud looking like complete assholes.

That's what Let It Burn is about.

399 Back in the Worst Economy Evah! Bush years, there was a trend for building kitchens with two dishwashers, so dishes wouldn't have to sit in the sink before the clean ones all got used.

Why not just put them away in cupboard? Then the dishwasher is free again.

What part of "...shall not be infringed." did they not get?

Don't get me wrong, I don't want it to happen. I have two late-teen daughters who are smart and college bound and Iwant them to have opportunities in the country I love. I just think it is inevitable. That makes me terribly sad, but I am glad I was raised a country boy and by happenstance was raised in environment where those skills were learned out of necessity and by cultural osmosis.

Polynikes, compare Romney's message to Reagan's message. All Jindahl was saying was do not let anyone define who we are as Republicans; we're for wanting everyone in this country to prosper, not just rich people. Who's for school choice? We are. Who's for real education reform? We are. Who's for returning decisions tostates and communities? We are. Who wants real immigration reform? We do. Who is concerned overthe degredation of American values being attacked morning, noon, and night? We are. Jindahl is right. We are the party of the people, not the special interest, ever-lovin' crony capitalist Democrat party. In other words, we are not the "let them eat cake" party, the Democrats are. We have to articulate that. And we have successes in those areas, we don't just talk about them. Hey, he's doing good things in LA. I say let's listen to what he has to say, and not through the filter of the MFM.

And no offense, but why are you lettingthe Operation Demoralize assholes, promoted by the likes of Politico, get you in a bunch of knots?

Lumber harvesting skills. [oh, yeah]
Building repair / maintenance abilities. [x]

413 Any resistance by Republicans, even of the token variety, would constitute participation in the end result by the media. More insidiously, it might even constitute causation or responsibility for the end result. The media is the third player in a one-on-one game. It seems to me that when you're presented with participation in a game in which the outcome is rigged you have precisely two choices (provided of course that you actually want to affect the end result):

1. Change the rules of the game so that they have the ability to produce a more even handed result.

2. Stop playing the game.

Now option one is a longball choice. It would necessarily require flooding the teaching and journalist professions with conservatives and Republican-leaning libertarians. This is a noble tact and should be engaged in but it would be 10-20 years before it could bear meaningful fruit. Option two provides the quicker, more therapeutic result. Let it burn, if you will. Changing the milieu of the game to a playing field of our own choosing. If we keep playing the same old game on the same old field expecting a different result......well, you know what that's called.

If they offer a program of their own, they will be "obstructionists". Obstructionists are anyone that wants to do something other than what Big O wants.

Oh and stop worrying about clean water and the environment. There's a whole army of bureaucrats that work on that all day long. That stuff is way more important than getting our financial house in order.

428 This is what comes from Republicans being the "Stupid Party". Forget the deficit. Don't ever speak of it again. The Deficit and balancing the budget is NOT the problem. There's one central economic problem in Washington and its SPENDING. Don't speak of anything else. Spending Spending Spending - that's the problem. When you speak of deficits and balanced budgets, you only give the libs and their MSM megaphones the opportunity to call for tax hikes.
