| Overnight Open Thread (11-13-2012)Q: Does Obamacare Impose a 3.8 Percent "Sales Tax" on Your Home? Well contra the article linked the answer is Yes. The only good news is that most people won't be hit with it...for now. We've been flooded with queries about this one ever since the health care bill became law. At the last minute, Democratic lawmakers decided on a new 3.8 percent tax on the net investment income of high-income persons. But the claim that this would amount to a $15,200 tax on the sale of a typical $400,000 home is utterly false. But if you own vacation or investment property though, look out: The Internal Revenue Service says that to qualify for the $250,000/$500,000 exclusion, a seller must have owned the home and lived there as the seller's "main home" for at least two years out of the five years prior to the sale. Obamacare just gets better and better doesn't it.
So Occupy Wall Street has moved on and is now buying and forgiving personal debt as part of Rolling Jubilee: OWS is going to start buying distressed debt (medical bills, student loans, etc.) in order to forgive it. As a test run, we spent $500, which bought $14,000 of distressed debt. We then ERASED THAT DEBT. (If you're a debt broker, once you own someone's debt you can do whatever you want with it - traditionally, you hound debtors to their grave trying to collect. We're playing a different game. A MORE AWESOME GAME.) Well it's their money and they're free to give it away this way if they want. This may help some people but I suspect OWS will eventually learn what a moral hazard is and/or run out of money. The 10 Most Obvious Oscar-Bait Film Tropes The Magical Negro and the Semi-Retard are just two of the most well-known ones. A Conservative's Buying Guide to Automobiles Well I've been very happy with my Jeep but when I eventually replace it I'm going foreign. Also meet our new TSA Union overlords. I remember at TSA's founding when they swore that the it would never be unionized. Well they lied like mother-fucking liars. The Young Ones: Hands up, Who Likes Me? Hmmm ... if it's possible to buy back $14,000 worth of debt for $500 (about 3.5 cents on the dollar), why don't debtors just ... *buy back their own debt*? I know, I know, they're debtors, they don't have any money. But even a down-and-outer should be able to raise that kind of money. By the way, if the OWS types want to spend their money that way, why not? It's their cash, and it's better on that than than the mischief they usually indulge in. Secession: Go sign every secession pettition. Fight back. They're fighting back in Quebec, and in Scotland. And those are "good" fight-backs. They're sticking it to the man, don't ya know? So, via the principle of political ju-jitsu, if nothing else, follow them down that road. Obama's victory supposes a comity that does not exist. He's counting on it, and Boehner Crew are obliging. You can vote no. So, vote. Vote to stop the madness. A government only has power with the consent of the governed, that's a foundational principle of the American republic. So, do vote that this government does not have your consent. You refuse to be ruled by it.

Re the automobile buying guide:
I've taken the pledge. I am never buying another UAW-built vehicle ever again. However, in all truthfulness, this is not a recent development. I swore off Detroit iron permanently back in the 1980s, after a friend found the source of a persistent rattle in his car: an empty beer bottle in a rocker panel. The rest of the car wasn't much better. A complete POS which depreciated faster than a falling brick. My friend said he'd have come out better if he had just burned a big stack of dollars in his fireplace at home. Been happy with Japanese cars built in nonunion Stateside plants. First will have to roll the 401k into a RothIRA. If you do a direct withdrawl, your 401k will automatically hold 20%. And then you will be taxed normally on what is left. If you roll into a RothIRA, that 20% is not withheld but still need to pay taxes. Second, don't buy silver first off. Pay off your debts first. Then work on building up a tenacity chest to ride out tough times, food and such. Then worry about trade/barter items like silver. Other glimpses into how people really think aren't so pleasant.... It was followed up by an "explanation" that basically said "well, I meant it well, I just assumed from the stuff you post that you were one of those young ppl who don't take their vows seriously. I have little debt. Student loans and a truck payment. I rent a house but am looking to buy a couple of acres with a small house (cash from 401k) to be semi self sufficient if TSHTF. Could I use the money penalty free as a down payment on a house? A couple of my funds aren't doing anything growth wise but I don't want to move it to the cash position because I won't physically have the money in my possession. Hmmm ... if it's possible to buy back $14,000 worth of debt for $500 (about 3.5 cents on the dollar), why don't debtors just ... *buy back their own debt*?
Posted by: Brown Line at November 13, 2012 10:27 PM (w/wSF) The Occupoopers are only able to buy the shittiest sort of debt t these prices. Debt that they would never collect, anyway. The Poopers are doing this for headlines since it's a total joke. Real debt that they might be able to squeeze money out of costs a hell of a lot more. The Poopers are buying debt that the debtors aren't bothered about (if they are still alive, real people, or in the country) and aren't suffering under. If the Poopers want to keep doing this, let them, but it's all meaningless. They're doing it for PR not to actually relieve the debt of people who are suffering from its service. I'm willing to bet that if the Occupoopers are paying 3.5 cents on the dollar for this debt that it's only worth 1 cent on the dollar. How about a used Ford? Is that acceptable under Moron standards?
Carried over from the previous thread: Our favorite holiday dish came from my late mother-in-law, a great lady...wish I could say the same about her daughter... ...but I digress. Anyway, the MIL would take dill pickles, then spread them with cream cheese, wrap the pickles in deli thin-sliced ham, then slice the pickles. They're a great appetizer. But until I married her daughter, she never had a name. I asked her what she called them. She took a couple of seconds to think, smiled and said: "Little S**tties". The name stuck, even though we had to change it to "Little Poopies" once the kids were born. "I rent a house but am looking to buy a couple of acres with a small house (cash from 401k) to be semi self sufficient if TSHTF." Where? There are a lot of semi-rural areas that are going to be overrun with no hope of rescue if things go Tango Uniform. If you are buying a rural retreat. it had better be far, far from any urban area, hard to find, and it had better have stable likeminded people nearby for mutual support. Read Victor Davis Hanson about how the formerly placid Central Valley of California is slowly reverting to a lawless no-man's-land. And that's _now_. Imagine it when law enforcement goes from delayed response to not even answering the phone. Note also that maintaining a totally self-sufficient independent homestead is incredibly hard. Really good preparedness/resilience types rehearse this. It's amazing how much small shit you can overlook and say, "Whoops, we're out. No problem. I'll just run into town to... damnit." I gotta say from the picture I'd never have guessed the one on the right was a guy (it makes a big difference in real life) if there had been no clue ("SPOT THE TRANNY!!!"). More to the point, why would an omnipotent being make a person so miserable (or, frankly, outright gay)?

So, on this OWS buys debt thing. Here's the deal though, there buying debt at "pennies on the dollar." I'm not fianancial expert, but typically when you get debt that cheap it's because the current holder is so frustrated with collecting on it they've all but given up. So all OWS is giving money to bankers that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. Way to live in the irony guys. (Plus we have a system for this, it's called bankrupcy.) just seemed appropriate.. “And the great owners, who must lose their land in an upheaval, the great owners with access to history, with eyes to read history and to know the great fact: when property accumulates in too few hands it is taken away. And that companion fact: when a majority of the people are hungry and cold they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds through all history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressed. The great owners ignored the three cries of history. The land fell into fewer hands, the number of the dispossessed increased, and every effort of the great owners was directed at repression. The money was spent for arms, for gas to protect the great holdings, and spies were sent to catch the murmuring of revolt so that it might be stamped out. The changing economy was ignored, plans for the change ignored; and only means to destroy revolt were considered, while the causes of revolt went on.” John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath Posted by: T.Hunter at November 13, 2012 10:58 PM (EZl54) 189

Burnitup- if you need cash, you should think about reducing your contributions to your 401K for the time being and put the increase in your paycheck directly in your savings account- have it automatically deducted so you don't even see it in your checking account. You should continue to contribute to your 401K at least up to the level that your company matches- it's free money and your account will grow faster. If you're worried about erosion of the amount you already have in it, pick another fund that may have a lower return, but is less exposed to market risk- a government bond fund, for example. Stay away from target date funds- they're losers.

"Us (usually conservative) 'white-collar' types get two cardboard boxes and thirty minutes to clean out our desks." Not an auto industry anecdote, but aerospace. The day after the election, and I'm not kidding, _the_ day after the election, not even waiting until the close of business, Boeing's defense group announced they were going to lay off a metric fuckton of people. Their assembly workforce is unionized, and their engineers are unionized. So they are going after the midlevel white collar managerial types. For those folks, first the company is going to roll back to 2010 headcount and then cut another 30% on top of that. Hope they have enough cardboard boxes. i don't think so...about the first part! sure, people will be pissed, but those people will generally be GOP voters anyway. blue-blooded dem millionaires don't care a whit about subsidising health-care for unproductive folks who vote to keep their preferred progressive politicians in power. and, of course, those unproductive folks will be essentially getting free health care. and they already wait an hour and a half in the ER with a minor cold for treatment they don't intend to pay for, anyway, so it's not like the service shortages will be a huge negative -.- Posted by: jimi ray at November 13, 2012 11:02 PM (79EF9) 206

"Isn't that lovely, forgive student debt. Start them out in their adult life to believe that being a freeloader is a good thing."
in defence of student debt forgiveness, 17-year-olds aren't really equipped with faculties of rationality sufficient to make decisions in their best interest on questions like choosing a college major that will define the earning potential for the rest of their adult lives. charging someone $35 000 a year to get a sociology degree is a grade-A scam; the amount of tuition inflation that has been heartily embraced by institutions of higher learning, private and public, in this country in recent years is absolutely unconscionable. i'm not for student debt forgiveness...i don't really think i am, because i worked hard to pay all mine off before coming back for my phd o.o...but i'm certainly not for the obscene tuition costs that are subsidising professors' mansions and six-figure salaries for mid-level university adminitration types. @.@ Posted by: jimi ray at November 13, 2012 11:16 PM (79EF9) 266

Mae West makes the thread worth it.
If Romney had quietly bought up a million worth of leveraged old debt and forgave it before the election, prolly coulda got half the FSA to vote for him. There is a moral hazard there, probably at least half of the debtors would just run up more. But it would have been a hell of a move. Unfortunately, they're right, the price will go up now, which will not only undercut the future of that "charity game," but will ass-rape people who need to pay off their own old debts and were hoping to do it at bargain rates. Unintended consequences are a stone cold bitch. The way to do that game is with a million dollars, not 500. It's like they went for the least possible benefit to cause the most possible damage (what am I saying, of course that's what they did). #290 - Anna Puma, That is part of what I'm thinking, yes. But the women are all reading as tools in this.
I have been a damned fool more than a few times for love, but I've never sold sex, and I've never used sex to manipulate a man. I'm doing what my guy calls "the flamenco of utter disgust" about the women in this tale. Especially since my read is that Broadhead's ID was placed in Rock Creek Park (and the media encouraged to raise a hue and cry over it) as a naked threat to Patraeus, who evidently cares about the woman. Liberals remind me of a story about the British in Africa. They gathered the tribesmen around a tree. Pulled out a chainsaw and cut it down. The tribesmen started laughing. The British ask them why they were laughing. Couldn't they see how powerful the saw was by the ease with which it cut down the tree? The tribesmen answered. You idiots. You cut down the only shade tree for a hundred miles.

A lot of those "foreign" car companies have factories in the U.S. If it hadn't been for the UAW at least some of them would have been in Michigan. Michigan had everything for auto manufacturing, transportation, engineers, engineering colleges, experienced auto workers, management, the whole works. We lost every chance to get that manufacturing because of the UAW. And many in the UAW were pretty blunt about the fact that they didn't want factories in Michigan unless they were union. <<Conservative's Buyer Guide: Automobiles>>
As a dedicated pick-up owner, I have owned three GM's of various sizes until the bailout. I was so furious I swore I would never buy another GM pick-up. I also swore I would never buy a Dodge (complete shit...why do you think they're the most "affordable" truck on the market) or a Ford (nearly complete shit; my father, brother and grandfather are/were devoted Ford pick-up owners despite the fact that all three of them had to visit their mechanics every other month). So I was compelled to look at the foreign trucks and was happily surprised to discover Toyota Tundra is the ONLY pick-up designed and built in the United States (GM builds their trucks in Canada, Ford and Dodge in Mexico...no, Ford devotees, those F-350s that are occasionally rolled out in Kentucky so Ford can claim they build their truck in the U.S. do NOT count), and they're built by non-union workers in San Antonio. My Tundra's at 60,000 miles now and all I've ever had to do was change the oil and rotate the tires. Still runs as quiet as when I first bought her and that's after hauling multiple loads, trips into the mountains off-road for camping or Christmas Trees and other assorted abuse. I have the 4.7 liter V-8, get 22 miles/gallon on the freeway and can pull up to five tons with very little power loss. Rides in the worst kind of snow/ice conditions as though it were a dry sunny day, and that sweet sport shifter; I can switch between manual and auto transmission on the fly. Best truck I've ever owned...pretty sure it'll be my last, too. Posted by: Sgt. York at November 14, 2012 12:21 AM (yk8/j) Posted by: sdavis at November 14, 2012 12:21 AM (njVMI) 411

Posted by: Jinx the Cat at November 14, 2012 12:12 AM (1Jxa1) That's right. In inflationary times you want to build up as much fixed rate debt as you possibly can. Using the money to buy hard assets is a double win. Frankly, at the rates today (artificially held, as they are) it is silly not to take on ungodly amounts of debt. The question is how long they artificially hold the rates down - or even drive them down further from these insanely low levels. >I've taken the pledge. I am never buying another UAW-built vehicle ever again.
Same here. Last summer I bought my first Toyota, an FJ instead of the Jeep I was looking at before the bailout. Its a great truck by the way. Then, at the end of this summer I was in the market for a motorcycle. I wanted to buy American, but the fact that Harley is union made stuck in my craw a bit. So, I looked into Victory. They're made in Iowa by non-union workers. Turns out, they have a reputation for being higher performance and more reliable than HD. I bought mine at the end of August and absolutely love it. The weather in Minnesota is about to shut me down, but I have had a blast on it so far. Moral of the story, the Unions can fuck off and die. I'll never give them another red cent. "Paying $35,000 for a sociology degree is grade-A stupid. There are lots of alternatives for students to achieve a meaningful degree."
i never said it wasn't inadvisable; i said the idea that kids should be fully able of their own accord to make the best choices for their future career stability when entering college is preposterous...and the extractive culture of higher education is largely responsible for what amounts to rent-seeking at the expense of ambitious young adults. it's more than a little heinous to exploit the developing minds of children who want to make a difference -- like all youngsters of that age -- by saddling them with $150 000 of debt to get a degree in vastly overserved markets. universities of all sorts mendaciously cook their "job placement" stats in order to fool students into believing that there really are enough meaningful, career-oriented jobs for a philosophy grad such that, at least graduating from this university, those horror stories about college grads having to scrape by on waitressing tips will never happen to you! if parents are complicit, that's even less reason to blame the children, of course. o.o but i really wouldn't want the inconvenient facts to get in the way of the oh-so-popular bashing of college students around here. ~.~ i'm not sure what "other alternatives" you could possibly be talking about, unless you think everyone should be a mechanic or work in retail of join the military for life...even engineering and science degrees cost $35 000 a year, for the record, and no, sorry, taking "courses" online with scam operations like university of phoenix doesn't provide the same sort of opportunities for career-oriented job placement that a degree from a real four-year university would. especially not in an economy like this one, where it's truly an employer's market, and even folks with high-powered degrees are in some cases reduced to seeking employment incommensurate with their level of education. alum associations unfortunately perpetuate an in-group sort of nepotism, so even the university you attend can be instrumental in landing you a "real" job upon graduation. alums from harvard and the ivies are known for their preferential hiring of "their own", but even state schools like A&M and UT, both heavily involved in texas oil, encourage cultures of school preference that manifest as a sort of "school-choice affirmative action". it's a hard sell to tell me that a kid entering college with a dream, who has never tried for a real job and knows no more about the job market and placement rates than what the university's Lying Lying Liars tell them, can be held fully responsible for believing what he's told. cynicism often comes too late, in that you usually don't develop it until you suffer the consequences of believing in someone else's good faith. Posted by: SFGoth at November 14, 2012 12:49 AM (/nqdo) I was in Mountain View......a bit closer....and in a building-type that failed miserably in the 1994 Northridge quake (apartments over parking). But even old building codes are better than no building codes at all. My father retired as the #3 Engineer for the City of Los Angeles, and I will firmly maintain that building inspectors are some of the great unsung heroes of the modern world, even though they can be a serious pain in the ass. And, yes -- I really believe that even though I've intentionally thwarted them at times. I was involved with a commercial project in South San Jose that involved putting a driveway across a sidewalk. Attempt #1 -- by the book. Passed all inspections. Had a few grading vehicles go over it, and it cracked. Inspector made us replace it. Attempt #2 -- by the book, with added rebar. Passed all inspections. Had a few concrete trucks go over it, and it cracked. Inspector made us replace it. Attempt #3 -- by the book until the inspector completed "pre-pour" inspection....then went back, and dug another 6" out of that MF the night before the pour. Laid in serious rebar and wire mesh. Hitler's bunker could only wish that it could have so much concrete and steel. Despite subsequent abuse, didn't crack. Only problem is if the city ever decides to run a sewer pipe through that area or something. Posted by: cthulhu at November 14, 2012 01:06 AM (kaalw) 500

"What was that post where you told us how you win people over by being civil and nice to them ... ? Cause I'm not seeing it put in practice." yeah, sorry, i'm over playing nice with the "christians" here who take every chance they can get to insult me -- folks i've never even heard of in my life -- and then, right on cue!!!!, whine about how nasty i am when i dare to respond to someone attacking me first. i've said as much before: i'm sick of "christians" calling me a "cum-guzzling douche-nozzle" (wwjd?) and then wringing their hands in despair when i show the audacity to fight back. even since the election, the "play nice" truce that commenters here were following in regards to folks with different views has been ignored in preference of obscenity-laced screeds directed against vicarious targets of their frustrations, viz, Anyone Who Doesn't Think Exactly Like Me. so, again: if anyone feels the need to snipe nasty at me for utterly no reason whatsoever, he or she can expect me to dig deeply to respond in kind with an absurdly over-adjectivised statement of my own distaste. some people are worth killing with kindness, in that there's hope that sometime in the future there will be some opportunity for meaningful discussion with them that civility would go a long way toward facilitating. then there are the conservative daily-kos kids on aoshq. lol. i'm well-aware that everyone here hates me because my views are a little different from the hard line in the sand. i suppose it's lost on the conservative kos kids that every single commenter who comes here with views slightly different than the party line somehow mysteriously becomes "an asshole" with "no sense of humour" after being pelted with the stones of your exceedingly unclever mental quarries, but there really is a simple explanation. you don't give a fuck about "condescension", because you condescend to every earnest statement of my political opinions. you don't give a fuck about "good humour", because the type of things you condemn out of my mouth are certainly no worse than the things which prompted my unconscionable response. and you certainly don't give a fuck about "asshole behaviour", because lots of you spend all night on here repeating utterly unoriginal insults attempting to one-up one another's mean-girl factor. sure, you suck gabe's dick and you suck ace's dick like good little soldiers, but the reality is that if they came in here, like i did, in good faith simply posting their views, they'd be deluged with a constant flood of nasty insults about their sexuality, how stupid they are, and how much they guzzle cum in general -- and if they fought back? SELF-JUSTIFICATION BABY: "see, i knew he was an asshole! that's why i called him a 'cum-guzzling douche-nozzle' in the first place!" yeah. spend a week using folks with slightly different opinions as a punching back for the same electoral frustrations that those folks have...and when someone gets fucking tired of it and fights back, you're suddenly wringing your hands about "civility" and "asshole" behaviour? hmm, now what political group does that sound like? You see, that entire meaningless rant was pure ignorant, unperceptive dribble, based on ignoring what I said. And that's how you started here ON DAY ONE, and the entire time you have been trying to play the passive-aggressive victim, which might have worked for five seconds except for one tiny detail. You forgot the passive part. You just opened anal-expressive and stayed there, and then feebly tried to play victim. Assuming it's not all just some sick pathetic troll mind-game, you could learn a huge lesson from what I normally tell people about the trolls around here (and they ignore, so that doesn't make you special). Water off a duck's back. If you don't go off like a meth-addled Roman Candle every time someone pokes you with a twig, you would stop being a figure of fun. Although in your case that might take a while, you've become a legend. Again, I reiterate, it's not that you're gay, it's not that you're "different," it's that you're a humorless asshole. And you're a humorless asshole because you aren't funny and you misinterpret humor and you aggressively and deliberately irritate people, not because of some invented sociopathology used to cope with the invincibly superior other. And I'm not condescending, I'm just not coddling you. You clearly have native intelligence, but your ability to cope with social cues is either damaged or lying fallow because you'd rather get yourself all worked up into a lather about everything, and, failing that, stir some shit and make yourself a target so you *can* work yourself up into an indignant lather. Plenty of people here have different ideas from the majority, including me. And yet somehow we manage not to completely and permanently alienate the shit out of virtually everyone with long, drawn-out side-topic rants, humorless and personal insults, and 5-gallon bucketloads of butthurt. Also, I'm not a Christian. I don't know where you get your ridiculous ideas, but if they have a return policy, take advantage of it. <<can't go wrong with a Toyota except for maybe a Prius
>> I am convinced the Prius is an ingenious marketing ploy. I know four people who own a Prius and rave about them...except all they rave about is gas mileage. That's it...no mention of comfort, quiet ride, great handling, durability, etc. etc. JUST MILEAGE! Finally, my aunt broke down and said she couldn't understand why her Prius wasn't getting the fuel mileage she was "promised". She drives on a freeway for thirty miles each way in her daily commute, right around 70 mph. I explained to her the "great" mileage only occurs at city speeds when the electric motor does most of the work; usually 35 mph or less. When I asked her what her freeway mileage was I almost spewed my soda through my nose: 17 mi./gallon. I am convinced Toyota markets the Prius solely to deluded lefties who refuse to look at their actual mileage and just tell themselves how awesome they are. And then there's the ridiculously expensive battery... Posted by: Sgt. York at November 14, 2012 01:52 AM (yk8/j) Posted by: andycanuck at November 14, 2012 01:52 AM (nkiQM) 566

"Democrats?"
that's what i was getting at. "I have no problem with the use of 'Xtian' but HE thinks it is grating to us and employs it to that end." uh, nope, try again. it's because i'm an awful typist who doesn't use his pinkies and, in most cases, his ring fingers, so words like "christ" and "unfortuantely" (SEE that's how it always comes out) tend to be troublesome. if there were a similarly accessible abbreviation for the latter, i'd use it, too. like i've said before, i don't have anything against xtians, since i'm marrying one. the thing i have difficulty wrapping my head around is the BLATANT xtian hypocrisy. you'd think you might at least lay off the abusive obscenity when you're claiming a religion whose second greatest commandment is "love thy neighbour as thyself", but what do i know? Everyone says it's because Toyotas are most of the cars on the road. That's not even remotely true.
I don't know where that comes from, but Auto statistics online are AFU. My Wild Ass Guess is that Toyotas sold about 170k out of 1.2 million total sales over the last year. That won't be continuous going back in time, but unless 1 million of those were Ladas, I don't see Toyota being a majority of anything. It's not that big a deal, I just have a pet peeve about *really* obviously wrong ideas. Especially if I hear them a lot. Maybe I'm the Weird Toyota Driver Magnet. When there was pushback because of the horribly broken response to social cues, he went madly passive-aggressive, and in typical pseudo-autistic fashion, can't get out of that mode as long as the stimulus exists. My Wild Ass Guess is that Toyotas sold about 170k out of 1.2 million total sales over the last year.
Without looking it up, total US auto sales are in the 12-14 million range. Toyota has the best-selling car (Camry), somewhere around 300k, but would cream its pants if it got anywhere close to GM or Ford's pickup sales of over 500k. Posted by: Waterhouse at November 14, 2012 02:11 AM (bdZaM) 599

17 mpg for a Prius on the highway seems awfully low. I don't think even the thrashers at Car and Driver get down to that.
But there's definitely a massive disconnect between the Obama-certified byzantinely-massaged "CAFE" fuel economy numbers the lying fuck will try to impress a credulous public with, and how many actual miles you'll be able to travel with your four, five or six bucks of gasoline. The CAFE numbers, for instance, are only marginally-related to the EPA (I think) sticker number posted on the side of a new car. Which is itself only marginally-related to what you as a human will achieve in driving your vehicle in a manner which doesn't infuriate your fellow motorist.

Since I'm talking to myself here, after being disappointed yet again in the latest Mythbusters episode (makes it a clean sweep of ennui this season), I went back and watched a few shows from the earlier seasons to try and find out what might have changed.
I guess what I liked about those earlier years is that it was more Junkyard Wars-ish, in that they took more time to explain and show what they were building to test the myth in question. The past little while, it's all seemed to emphasize the fluff and ex-plo-si-ons. Not even Kari's rack in a tank top can compensate for that. All things must come to pass, I guess. "This is a Christian blog? Well hot damn shit"
lol. for the record: i never said this was a "xtian blog"! the commentariat -- at least that most vocal in-group that is quick to band together to insult those who deviate oh-so-minutely from hard-line conservative philosophy -- is at least xtian in plurality...likely even in majority...and it seems like the motivations for some of the most prevalent obscene insults and attacks are fired from the barrels of nominally xtian viewpoints. e.g., it's amazing how quickly the insults pile up at the expense of any newcomer claiming atheism, or those who would afford non-abortifacient emergency contraception to rape victims...the gay marriage thing, which so many folks are happy to inject into discussions that have nothing to do with the issue. i could just be wearing e-blinders, but i don't think so (then again, that's what blinders do >.>). either way, let's be serious: lots of people have been piling on me all week in a way reminiscent of when i first came to the blog. i made one nasty response, and all of the sudden, some two-dozen-strong corps of civility-police crawls out of the woodwork suddenly concerned about "assholes"? rly? rly rly rly? it would be nice if the hypocritical fake-outrage over Insults Coming Only From Jackson And No One Else Ever were toned down a notch or eleven. sometimes people who are insulted insult back...and sometimes, they're just better at being nasty x.X Posted by: jimi ray at November 14, 2012 02:55 AM (79EF9) 631

Then you would have a problem with the concept of "free will", for a start. Where in the Old Testament is it ever even mentioned that G-d attempted to build a perfect world? I mean, take a look at the creation story. It talks about how G-d created something and then saw that it was good. Various excerpts: And God said: 'Let there be light.' And there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called He Seas; and God saw that it was good. And the earth brought forth grass, herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind; and God saw that it was good. Etc., etc. finally culminating with: And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. Nowhere does it say "perfect". The word used in the Torah is "tov" == "good", except for the last one where the phrase is "tov ma'od" == "very good". Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at November 14, 2012 04:41 AM (X3lox) 723

Depending on the nature of the thing, you could attack/drain it on the theory that a minor injury is better than a major swollen injury (being sure to disinfect thoroughly). Or just pad it adequately with a gap at the surface and try not to move too much in your sleep. In either case, anti-inflammatories should help both the pain and the injury itself, provided you don't use them to excess. Hope you get better soon. Also, take care to use shoes that fit. Just woke up for no real reason and thought I would check the tail end of the ONT for a moment to put me back in a slumberous mood. I see jimi ray is pissed because everyone is pointing out the obvious to him (that he's a dick), and DAve (another dick) has for some reason decided to ride to the first dick's rescue. That's usually not a good idea online, but what are you going to do, dicks will be dicks, after all that's their nature. I've been noticing the upstream observation that Obama voters are inordinately angry and/or quiet this time around, which is fine by me. I hate those stupid free-loading motherfuckers, and they can be mad about the fact that they're a mob of losers being manipulated by an unethical, anti-American con man all they want. They voted for his ass, I hope they wind up eating cat food. Big Ben has the Favre injury, huh? Too bad, the Steelers were on a roll. Maybe he'll play through the pain like a good serial rapist should. He'll have to or they have no shot against the Ravens (whose star murderous linebacker is also out). Well, I'm headed back to be for an hour or so. Vic will let me know what's important in the world when I get back up for work. Posted by: Midnight Rider at November 14, 2012 05:52 AM (bS6uW) 752

Do NOT underestimate the OWS Rolling Jubilee. It's absolutely the smartest move OWS has ever made, and it is dangerous as hell. The Tea Party should look into encouraging people to do the same thing, completely transparently and without a big fuss, because if OWS is alone in this it'll get 'em respect and power.
The Rolling Jubilee and Occupy Sandy -- OWS's private relief effort -- are clear signs that OWS is pursuing power as a radical party. Why do I say this? Well, because the "tangible benefit" model is exactly what the Golden Dawn is doing in Greece, and what radical parties like the Black Panthers did in ghettoes in their heyday. Provide a tangible benefit to people in need, and they will remember you. OWS is in the process of buying voters' goodwill. Greeks will remember that Golden Dawn helped them when the police couldn't or wouldn't help. People will remember that yeah, they've still got all of this debt, but they got a letter from OWS saying "a portion of it is paid off, and we hope that this helps a little." People will remember that they keep seeing little ads in the paper every week with OWS touting the number of people who've had debt retired or eased. People will start *asking for help* from OWS, and OWS will try to deliver what it can as best it can. And someday, at the polling place, they'll ask for a favor in exchange. The issue to attack on is transparency. Didn't OWS get a truckload of donations before? Where did that money go? Why should they get more money for the Rolling Jubilee? What is that money for? How much of it will actually go to debt relief, and how much into OWS's pockets for whatever reason? This debt-forgiveness thing sounds like something that would be reasonable and fun to do. If people knew how, they could buy $500 worth of debt themselves and then forgive it, without having to give money to OWS. That approach is what the Tea Party should encourage. Personal charity is way better than reliance on gummint or OWS. Posted by: Well-Armed Lamb at November 14, 2012 08:13 AM (eegto) 758
Hope OWS is issuing those 1099s for debt forgiveness. That is taxable income.
