Q: Does Obamacare Impose a 3.8 Percent "Sales Tax" on Your Home?
Well contra the article linked the answer is Yes. The only good news is that most people won't be hit with it...for now.
We've been flooded with queries about this one ever since the health care bill became law. At the last minute, Democratic lawmakers decided on a new 3.8 percent tax on the net investment income of high-income persons. But the claim that this would amount to a $15,200 tax on the sale of a typical $400,000 home is utterly false.
The truth is that only a tiny percentage of home sellers will pay the tax. First of all, only those with incomes over $200,000 a year ($250,000 for married couples filing jointly) will be subject to it. And even for those who have such high incomes, the tax still won't apply to the first $250,000 on profits from the sale of a personal residence - or to the first $500,000 in the case of a married couple selling their home.
But if you own vacation or investment property though, look out:
The Internal Revenue Service says that to qualify for the $250,000/$500,000 exclusion, a seller must have owned the home and lived there as the seller's "main home" for at least two years out of the five years prior to the sale.
Obamacare just gets better and better doesn't it.
So Occupy Wall Street has moved on and is now buying and forgiving personal debt as part of Rolling Jubilee:
OWS is going to start buying distressed debt (medical bills, student loans, etc.) in order to forgive it. As a test run, we spent $500, which bought $14,000 of distressed debt. We then ERASED THAT DEBT. (If you're a debt broker, once you own someone's debt you can do whatever you want with it - traditionally, you hound debtors to their grave trying to collect. We're playing a different game. A MORE AWESOME GAME.)
This is a simple, powerful way to help folks in need -- to free them from heavy debt loads so they can focus on being productive, happy and healthy. As you can see from our test run, the return on investment approaches 30:1. That's a crazy bargain!
Well it's their money and they're free to give it away this way if they want. This may help some people but I suspect OWS will eventually learn what a moral hazard is and/or run out of money.

Hmmm ... if it's possible to buy back $14,000 worth of debt for $500 (about 3.5 cents on the dollar), why don't debtors just ... *buy back their own debt*?
I know, I know, they're debtors, they don't have any money. But even a down-and-outer should be able to raise that kind of money.
By the way, if the OWS types want to spend their money that way, why not? It's their cash, and it's better on that than than the mischief they usually indulge in.

The rest of the car wasn't much better. A complete POS which depreciated faster than a falling brick. My friend said he'd have come out better if he had just burned a big stack of dollars in his fireplace at home.
Been happy with Japanese cars built in nonunion Stateside plants.

I believe you can take it out without penalty if you use it as a downpayment on a primary residence. But, don't take my word for it, ask somebody who actually knows (or google it). You can also move it from whatever funds or other instruments it's in and put in a cash position. That doesn't show any growth, but it also shows no shrinkage. Yet . . .

But really, lenders will contort in all kinds of ways to lend the original debtor "buy" the debt through a settlement instead, isn't settling a debt for less than originally owed pretty much the same thing?

First will have to roll the 401k into a RothIRA.
If you do a direct withdrawl, your 401k will automatically hold 20%. And then you will be taxed normally on what is left.
If you roll into a RothIRA, that 20% is not withheld but still need to pay taxes.
Second, don't buy silver first off. Pay off your debts first. Then work on building up a tenacity chest to ride out tough times, food and such. Then worry about trade/barter items like silver.

This. You can just borrow your own money from your 401K, up to half of what you have in there, excluding any company match I think. Use the money to pay off debt and then you are paying the interest to yourself rather than someone else.

Getting a girl. These are both smooth collies which will be a relief after all the fur from our rough collie (who is now 3.5 yrs).

I have little debt. Student loans and a truck payment. I rent a house but am looking to buy a couple of acres with a small house (cash from 401k) to be semi self sufficient if TSHTF. Could I use the money penalty free as a down payment on a house?
A couple of my funds aren't doing anything growth wise but I don't want to move it to the cash position because I won't physically have the money in my possession. Another reason to cash out and take the tax hit at this years rate.

The Occupoopers are only able to buy the shittiest sort of debt t these prices. Debt that they would never collect, anyway. The Poopers are doing this for headlines since it's a total joke. Real debt that they might be able to squeeze money out of costs a hell of a lot more. The Poopers are buying debt that the debtors aren't bothered about (if they are still alive, real people, or in the country) and aren't suffering under.
If the Poopers want to keep doing this, let them, but it's all meaningless. They're doing it for PR not to actually relieve the debt of people who are suffering from its service. I'm willing to bet that if the Occupoopers are paying 3.5 cents on the dollar for this debt that it's only worth 1 cent on the dollar.

Glad your husband didn't change his mind about the second goggie...I have a black Lab, she's always been an only dog and my husband absolutely refused to get another dog. Then, my mom passed away this past Halloween, and I inherited her schnoodle-beagle (which is exactly what it sounds like...a mutt). Made a huge difference in my Lab...she's got someone to rough house with, and I don't find myself constantly dodging tennis balls.

So, on this OWS buys debt thing.
Here's the deal though, there buying debt at "pennies on the dollar." I'm not fianancial expert, but typically when you get debt that cheap it's because the current holder is so frustrated with collecting on it they've all but given up.
So all OWS is giving money to bankers that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. Way to live in the irony guys. (Plus we have a system for this, it's called bankrupcy.)

Today my brother made the mistake of suggesting that the Catholic Church should consider ordaining women. A lot of those "foreign" car companies have factories in the U.S. If it hadn't been for the UAW at least some of them would have been in Michigan.
Michigan had everything for auto manufacturing, transportation, engineers, engineering colleges, experienced auto workers, management, the whole works. We lost every chance to get that manufacturing because of the UAW. And many in the UAW were pretty blunt about the fact that they didn't want factories in Michigan unless they were union.

So, someone asked me what I wanted to talk about: 1) the 'Let it burn' attitude (fuck you people, this country is worth fighting for to the last breath). 2) The propensity for conservatives to mirror liberals by sneering at the electorate (they are soooooooooooooo stupid!)
and finally, I just want to have a cohesive discussion about issues we face where I don't have to chase the latest post by a blogger and/or search through 500+ replies to see if anyone has responded to a post I made.
Maybe this isn't a popular request, and if not then nevermind. But jeez, Ace should be able to set up a forum without too much trouble. If he needs help, there has to be a moron/ette here who can help him out.

Yes, but I keep trying to explain that "The first principle is that the principal wants to be your pal" and no one gets it. I somehow don't think your very fine example is going to help, either. It's not that any of these little things are so very hard, it's that people don't seem to have had them pounded into their heads when they were young, and it's probably too late (and too irritating) now. Haven't been here for a few days. I'm in a rural area very close to the border and enjoying the isolation. The road that I'm on dead ends at the border and once or twice a week a silver car races down it and then tears back up and disappears. Probably collecting what was thrown over the fence.
Still taking the election hard, and don't see a heck of a lot in the future that is bright. Financially I think we're screwed.

As a dedicated pick-up owner, I have owned three GM's of various sizes until the bailout. I was so furious I swore I would never buy another GM pick-up. I also swore I would never buy a Dodge (complete shit...why do you think they're the most "affordable" truck on the market) or a Ford (nearly complete shit; my father, brother and grandfather are/were devoted Ford pick-up owners despite the fact that all three of them had to visit their mechanics every other month). So I was compelled to look at the foreign trucks and was happily surprised to discover Toyota Tundra is the ONLY pick-up designed and built in the United States (GM builds their trucks in Canada, Ford and Dodge in Mexico...no, Ford devotees, those F-350s that are occasionally rolled out in Kentucky so Ford can claim they build their truck in the U.S. do NOT count), and they're built by non-union workers in San Antonio.
My Tundra's at 60,000 miles now and all I've ever had to do was change the oil and rotate the tires. Still runs as quiet as when I first bought her and that's after hauling multiple loads, trips into the mountains off-road for camping or Christmas Trees and other assorted abuse. I have the 4.7 liter V-8, get 22 miles/gallon on the freeway and can pull up to five tons with very little power loss. Rides in the worst kind of snow/ice conditions as though it were a dry sunny day, and that sweet sport shifter; I can switch between manual and auto transmission on the fly.
Best truck I've ever owned...pretty sure it'll be my last, too.

That's right. In inflationary times you want to build up as much fixed rate debt as you possibly can. Using the money to buy hard assets is a double win.
Frankly, at the rates today (artificially held, as they are) it is silly not to take on ungodly amounts of debt. The question is how long they artificially hold the rates down - or even drive them down further from these insanely low levels.

Same here. Last summer I bought my first Toyota, an FJ instead of the Jeep I was looking at before the bailout. Its a great truck by the way.
Then, at the end of this summer I was in the market for a motorcycle. I wanted to buy American, but the fact that Harley is union made stuck in my craw a bit. So, I looked into Victory. They're made in Iowa by non-union workers. Turns out, they have a reputation for being higher performance and more reliable than HD. I bought mine at the end of August and absolutely love it. The weather in Minnesota is about to shut me down, but I have had a blast on it so far.

universities of all sorts mendaciously cook their "job placement" stats in order to fool students into believing that there really are enough meaningful, career-oriented jobs for a philosophy grad such that, at least graduating from this university, those horror stories about college grads having to scrape by on waitressing tips will never happen to you!
if parents are complicit, that's even less reason to blame the children, of course. o.o but i really wouldn't want the inconvenient facts to get in the way of the oh-so-popular bashing of college students around here. ~.~
i'm not sure what "other alternatives" you could possibly be talking about, unless you think everyone should be a mechanic or work in retail of join the military for life...even engineering and science degrees cost $35 000 a year, for the record, and no, sorry, taking "courses" online with scam operations like university of phoenix doesn't provide the same sort of opportunities for career-oriented job placement that a degree from a real four-year university would.
especially not in an economy like this one, where it's truly an employer's market, and even folks with high-powered degrees are in some cases reduced to seeking employment incommensurate with their level of education.
alum associations unfortunately perpetuate an in-group sort of nepotism, so even the university you attend can be instrumental in landing you a "real" job upon graduation. alums from harvard and the ivies are known for their preferential hiring of "their own", but even state schools like A&M and UT, both heavily involved in texas oil, encourage cultures of school preference that manifest as a sort of "school-choice affirmative action".
it's a hard sell to tell me that a kid entering college with a dream, who has never tried for a real job and knows no more about the job market and placement rates than what the university's Lying Lying Liars tell them, can be held fully responsible for believing what he's told.

I was in Mountain View......a bit closer....and in a building-type that failed miserably in the 1994 Northridge quake (apartments over parking). But even old building codes are better than no building codes at all. My father retired as the #3 Engineer for the City of Los Angeles, and I will firmly maintain that building inspectors are some of the great unsung heroes of the modern world, even though they can be a serious pain in the ass.
And, yes -- I really believe that even though I've intentionally thwarted them at times. I was involved with a commercial project in South San Jose that involved putting a driveway across a sidewalk.
Attempt #1 -- by the book. Passed all inspections. Had a few grading vehicles go over it, and it cracked. Inspector made us replace it.
Attempt #2 -- by the book, with added rebar. Passed all inspections. Had a few concrete trucks go over it, and it cracked. Inspector made us replace it.
Attempt #3 -- by the book until the inspector completed "pre-pour" inspection....then went back, and dug another 6" out of that MF the night before the pour. Laid in serious rebar and wire mesh. Hitler's bunker could only wish that it could have so much concrete and steel. Despite subsequent abuse, didn't crack. Only problem is if the city ever decides to run a sewer pipe through that area or something.

Hi Adriane. Thanks. Not really. My mom is in a nursing home
temporarily. Its supposed to be a week, until she is off iv antibiotics
and the latest abcess is more healed. But then she comes home and we
have to hire 24 hour nursing. The money is going to run out fast. So
far she's not in the kind of pain my dad was at this point, but i don't
know how long that will last. Its horrible to watch her go through
this. I wish God would take her before it gets worse.

I don't know where that comes from, but Auto statistics online are AFU. My Wild Ass Guess is that Toyotas sold about 170k out of 1.2 million total sales over the last year. That won't be continuous going back in time, but unless 1 million of those were Ladas, I don't see Toyota being a majority of anything.
It's not that big a deal, I just have a pet peeve about *really* obviously wrong ideas. Especially if I hear them a lot.

I mean, take a look at the creation story. It talks about how G-d created something and then saw that it was good. Various excerpts:

Sorry to hear that. Depending on the nature of the thing, you could attack/drain it on the theory that a minor injury is better than a major swollen injury (being sure to disinfect thoroughly).
Or just pad it adequately with a gap at the surface and try not to move too much in your sleep.
In either case, anti-inflammatories should help both the pain and the injury itself, provided you don't use them to excess.
Hope you get better soon. Also, take care to use shoes that fit. Extra socks and larger shoes might have helped.

This debt-forgiveness thing sounds like something that would be reasonable and fun to do. If people knew how, they could buy $500 worth of debt themselves and then forgive it, without having to give money to OWS. That approach is what the Tea Party should encourage. Personal charity is way better than reliance on gummint or OWS.
