| Overnight Open Thread (11-12-2012)Well I'm back in the US - all exhausted and jet-lagged and with my sausage contraband unconfiscated. Sometime the system fails us. This is a classic short story that I had forgotten all about until logprof mentioned it a week or two back. I got another barber that comes over from Carterville and helps me out Saturdays, but the rest of the time I can get along all right alone. You can see for yourself that this ain't no New York: City and besides that, the most of the boys works all day and don't have no leisure to drop in here and get themselves prettied up. It's only a few pages long - so just go read the whole thing here. By the end you should have caught on to the sub-text. If not, read it again or cheat and go here for a quick analysis. What does it say about human nature and how does this apply to our modern politics? Discuss.
After he was defeated for reelection in 1989, New York Mayor Ed Koch was asked if he would ever run for office again. "No," Koch replied. "The people have spoken - and they must be punished." Indeed. I hate to pile on but this just seems inept and thoughtless. From the moment Mitt Romney stepped off stage Tuesday night, having just delivered a brief concession speech he wrote only that evening, the massive infrastructure surrounding his campaign quickly began to disassemble itself. It's a shame the Romney campaign didn't reflect the skills and virtues of Romney the man. Once worth over $100 million after selling his anti-virus software company while in his 30s, he's now worth far, far less, wanted for murder in Belize and on the run. How did this all happen? Well read this article and then the one above and you'll start to see. I consider his story a cautionary tale about becoming super-rich without a driving purpose in life. 30 Years Ago: A Look Back at 1982 Time Bandits, Delorean, Ed Asner, and the Johnny Wadd. For once a video showing how a food is made that isn't entirely disgusting. Mostly because people's expectations for hot dog are set so low. Me - I'm getting hankerin' for some dogs. Heh: Taylor Lautner says werewolf-on-infant love is a "touchy subject" And John Cusack is making a Rush Limbaugh biography. What could possibly go wrong? Three days after Paula Broadwell entered the center of national controversy, FBI agents Monday evening entered her family’s Dilworth home and appeared to be searching both floors.
The four or five agents brought cardboard boxes used for carrying papers and were on both floors of the home. About a dozen members of the local and national media gathered. It wasn’t immediately clear what the agents were focused on. Broadwell’s apparent affair with retired Army Gen. David Petraeus, who is married, led him to resign Friday as CIA director. Broadwell’s Charlotte neighbor Sarah Curme said Monday that Broadwell, her husband and two young sons were doing pretty well considering the circumstances. Broadwell marked her 40th birthday over the weekend with family in Washington, D.C. -- In a January interview with the Observer, Broadwell talked about how much she relied on her husband, friends and family to help with child care while she wrote her book, “All In: The Education of General Petraeus.” fromm Charlotte Observer tonight Posted by: Thunderb at November 12, 2012 10:25 PM (Dnbau) 36

I'm confused how anyone can make an "unauthorized" biopic. You know at the end of movies when they say, "Any similarity to any person living or dead is coincidence" ? Pretty sure you can't just make a movie about someone without their permission.
Can you make a plausibly deniable fake biopic ? Sure. Don't know if that's what Cusack is making, but I honestly don't see how someone could make a movie about someone without their permission. Posted by: deadrody at November 12, 2012 10:27 PM (DkAJe) 40

Perhaps the GOP should adopt this as their platform:
The Sharon Statement Adopted in conference at Sharon, Connecticut, on 11 September 1960. In this time of moral and political crises, it is the responsibility of the youth of America to affirm certain eternal truths. We, as young conservatives, believe: That foremost among the transcendent values is the individual's use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force; That liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom; That the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice; That when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty; That the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power; That the genius of the Constitution- the division of powers- is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people, in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federal government; That the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs; That when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation; that when it takes from one man to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both; That we will be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the United States is secure; that history shows periods of freedom are rare, and can exist only when free citizens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies; That the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatest single threat to these liberties; That the United States should stress victory over, rather than coexistance with, this menace; and That American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does it serve the just interests of the United States? Semi perm post until it sinks in for the slow witted trolls
Here is all you need to know about how doing another round of amnesty will go. Many of you are probably unaware, but the GOP used to own California. Richard Nixon, yes that Richard Nixon, was a congressman and Senator and Reagan was Governor from '67 to '75. Do you think men such as these will ever be elected in California ever again. Surely not! A Brief History of the Presidential Voting History for California with a little background 1965 - Immigration and Nationality Act Passes Ted Kennedy: "First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same... Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset.... Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia.... "In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think." THIS AS WE KNOW WAS A LIE 1968 - GOP 1972 - GOP. 1976 - GOP. 1980 - GOP. 1984 - GOP. 1986 - Simpson/Mazzoli Amnesty Act Passes. Largest general amnesty for illegal immigrants due to our cities being flooded by the '65 act. 1988 - GOP. 1992 - DEM. 1996 - DEM. 1996 - Illegal Immigration Reform and Responsibility act - Smoke and mirrors that was neither reform nor responsible. It's main function was to water down sponsership requirements putting chain migration on steroids. 2000 - DEM. 2004 - DEM. 2008 - The political class tries to do another round of amnesty but is rebuffed by public outcry 2008 - DEM. 2012 - DEM. California is now entirely Democrat and will never vote for another GOP President again because of massive unchecked illegal immigration to that state. Here is an article from the PEW center on hispanic voting patterns. http://tinyurl.com/6uuc4 No Democrat has received less than 56% of the hispanic vote. Two years after signing the largest general amnesty for Hispanics, the GOP nominee garnered 30% of the hispanic vote. John "Mr Amnesty" McCain received 31% of the hispanic vote. George W. Bush did the best with 40% of the hispanic vote. On average Democrats get 65% of the hispanic vote. The GOP will be committing suicide if it does another round of amnesty This is the fate that awaits the country if we are stupid enough to commit suicide but seeing as we have idiots in leadership positions and within the ranks of the Conservative "intelligentsia" this seems the likely outcome. Texas does have the right to split up.
(It had the right to secede, too; but it exercised that right already - and then it idiotically joined the Confederacy a month after that. It wasted so much money, time and troops that it fell apart and surrendered, Germany WW1 style, even though no Union troops were on its soil. So, that secession ship hath sailed. If Texas had done a Kentucky and stayed neutral in the war, it'd be independent to this day.) (But I digress.) Everyone needs to read Ramsdell's history of Texas after Reconstruction; it is an older book and so free on several archives. That digression just posted mostly derives from that. In addition, it deals with the wrangling under which many Texans pondered exactly that - splitting up the state, and making new states, with El Paso going to New Mexico Territory. No 'what can be done?' whatever God allows. in 1812 the British were about to strangle Lady liberty in her crib.....God sent a hurricane and tornados to DC and said to England "no." in 2012 The President was about to strangle the Golden Goose in Liberty's insane asylum and God sent Sandy..... I'm not sure I'm joking. I'm about to go to bed and get more calm and less muratic acid brain going. The skies are clearing and a little poverty with the promise of earned gain is calling. Good Evening
I know many are believing we are boned. However, I believe there are many untapped financial opportunities in the upcoming year. For example: 1. I plan to open a little grocery store with no groceries. What....well, real simple. EBT Fraud is easy and, more importantly, with enough of a kick back to the local Democratic party boss, I should be left alone. Its win-win, the patron will get 50% of what they "bought" back in cash, the pay-offs are prob. 10%, I gotta probably spend 20 - 25% in over head and the rest.....profit. Plus, since all I gotta do is sit by the cash register all day, I got plenty of time to comment here. 2. Green Energy consultant. I know nothing about green energy. I know just enough to write a phony baloney grant request and smart enough to realize that kicking 50% back as a campaign contribution keeps my grants going. 3. Union Organizer for Pan Handlers. Hey, someone gotta organize what corner each pan handler gets. Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for Life at November 12, 2012 11:05 PM (OWjjx) 199

Sven,
It isn't treason. The electorate voted in a nanny state, adducing the 10th amendment or 'states rights' is ipso facto racist to the political, media and academic classes, and they voted to live beyond our means now in the hopes we will never have to live beneath our means later on (i.e. our children). It is an opinion that Lincoln was wrong about states rights, even if he was right about everything else. Our side's goose is cooked under the current configuration. If anyone here can demonstrate how the party can 'realistically' be saved I'm open to suggestions (but not self-delusion, like we got throughout this campaign). And no, immigration reform is suicide, so forget that. Posted by: Pyrrho of Elis II: The Secret of the Ooze at November 12, 2012 11:05 PM (Kd6lF) 202

Newt jumping to the head of the collaborators line: Newt Gingrich is joining the cadre of Republicans calling for the Republican Party to more actively reach out to a more diverse electorate, arguing on Monday that the party needs to become more "inclusive." "I think we need to be inclusive, and I emphasize the difference between inclusive and outreach," Gingrich said Monday morning in an appearance on ABC's "The View." "Outreach is when five white guys have a meeting and call you. Inclusive is when you're in the meeting. And I think we have to understand to be inclusive." Also: Former House Speaker and onetime presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Monday said that if President Obama was “sincere” about forging a plan to avoid the looming “fiscal cliff” and cut the deficit, Republicans would have no option but to work with him. “The president faces the biggest choice since January 2009: Does he sit down in a room and honestly, openly negotiate with Speaker [John] Boehner [R-Ohio] and [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.], or does he come in, give a set of demands and go hold a press conference?” said Gingrich on NBC’s “Today.” “If the president’s willing to do it, the Republicans have no choice,” he added. “You can’t turn down a president who’s just won reelection if he’s sincere.” Vidkun Gingrich... I'm getting more optimistic by the day. I don't know who said it but the Dems really did win themselves a ticket on the Titanic. They're in a lose/lose situation.
They've already decimated the economy with government intervention. It isn't going to recover. It's going to get worse and worse. And if they somehow manage to win in 2014 what are they going to do? Rejuvenate the economy? They are economic poison. All they have done is hasten then end of their beloved State. They will drive down economic activity and continue to spend like drunken sailors until the checks finally bounce. Much of the world has already stopped buying our bonds. It's not that far off. And we need the State to collapse. Freedom is not compatible with a monster progressive state. It doesn't mean the country will collapse. It does mean we need to work on what comes after, but we do need something to do. Don't we? Posted by: runninrebel at November 12, 2012 11:16 PM (J4gw3) 255

But, but, but .....Newt was a REAL conservative! He led the 1994 "revolution". See here, Newt was always in love with his own voice, and still is. What Newt loves most is Newt and the sound of his own voice. Interesting guy with lots of ideas, but about 50% of them are total bullshit. He needs a full time press secretary that can control the stupid things that he says that negate the interesting things that he says. Dick Gephart actually said something that I thought was actually pretty fair and generous about Newt when Newt was Speaker of the House. When asked what happened to Newt as Speaker (especially his fall) , I was expecting something kinda nasty and invective. Instead, Dick said,"Newt thought he was Prime Minister, when he was only Speaker of the House." He is in the stupid "let's rethink everything!" mode.He really thinks he is Churchill and going to be called back to "save us". Yeah we know! But thats' not a problem. The problem is philosophy that does not fall in line with the philosophy of the founding documents ensuring Free Will and the Pursuit of Happiness. "Negative Rights" is the Philosophy of the Founding documents, and Obama and his Ilk want a living document that supports the idea of "Positive Rights." If the Democrats supported even half of what Conservatives want there would be no big with Democrat majorities. This is the way it used to be. @ 183 Maet
Love your work, you are awesome! But on this point I must protest. Yes, parties have lost big and come back before, but never has the demographic writing been on the wall this clearly. And the case of California after amnesty is damning. I sincerely doubt that we get out of the next term without some kind of immigration reform that structurally damns us. Alternately, statehood for Puerto Rico might damn us as well. It is true that no immigrant is forever beholden to one party, but the probability that the majority of them will go with the party whose imprimatur is on the immigration law is high. further, many immigrants espouse liberation theology, which is inimical to most republican ideas (but not secular nanny-state ones). So what is our big move, Maet, if it isn't at least giving passing thought to the really big moves like going 3rd party and amnesty? And if we don't go with a big move like that (which let's face it, we won't), what is our recourse when the next thing doesn't work (which let's face it, it likely won't)? BHUT, ideas DO matter to the Left. For 100 years they've never stopped debating and refining their ideas. However, the entire purpose of all the ideas they've refined haslittle to do with building or even maintaining a healthy system. To the contrary! The great preoccupation of the Left, the one subject they've spilt more ink on than anything else is this: "How do we take this sucker down?" Remember, these guys started with Marxism, class warfare, and material dialectics. Here's their plan, literally: 1) Replace the system; 2) ???; 3) Profit!

Just a question for academic discussion. At what point would secession become justified? How far from the original intent of the Constitution would the country have to drift before such a thing could be an acceptable consideration? I guess what I'm getting at here is there has to be a breaking point when it comes to centralized government and disregard for the Tenth Amendment. I'm not necessarily suggesting it's been reached. What I'm asking is....is there a point where itCAN be reached? Posted by: Reggie1971 at November 12, 2012 11:39 PM (8cOY0) 306
Look samwise, this has nothing to do with race and cannot be reliably tied to IQ either. Don't play the games we see from time to time of academic 'studies' trying to prove that conservatives are stupider, more socially maladjusted than their eudaimonic liberal counterparts. This is purely to do with cultural and political predilections. if 12 million Germans, Australians, Indians or Chadians moved to the US at once, it would probably shift our political balance likewise...

Modern high IQ societies present but one approach. If you want to use natural selection as a tool to evaluate that approach, beware. An argument could be made that high IQ societies are inherently unstable. Classical Greece thrived for only about 50 years. Rome's Golden Age came and went, literallly, in the space of a generation. (Arguably, perhaps a little more. But that's it. A little more). And today, the highest IQ societies are the ones trapped in demographic decimation.A strong argument can be made that we in the west stand at the brink of another, looming Dark Age, scheduled to arrive in the next 50-100 years. Meanwhile those damn Trobianders will still keep on keepin' on. They had their own less dramatic but equally viable survival strategy. And natural selection does not give a whit about all the drama, right?

Meh. You're so stupid it's amazing. The march of technology occurred thanks to society, itself made possible from concepts of law and virtue. No, the GOP really does suck at some very basic core political practices. It has got to get better. Of course, here is the one difference between the parties. Larger parts of the GOP are private sector workers. We have jobs outside of politics. We do it for a mutlitude of reasons. Democrats rely more frequently on politics for their job. The US has not been a largely socialist nation since the 1930's. In policy terms, you have a point. But in my youth I used to insist on arguing that Democrats were really Socialists. Why? Because it was true, for one thing, but also because the communication of that truth meant something then. We were culturally opposed to socialism. It was a scandal to be labeled a socialist, and the Democrats themselves hotly denied the charge. Hotly. Fast forward to 2008, Barack Obama wins the presidency, and Newsweek runs the cover, "We're All Socialists Now". These days it doesn't pay to call out Democrats as socialists, because it is widely seen as true. And also, it is widely seen as not being a problem. After all, we've been socialist since the 1930's, right? But the fact is this: the American people WEREN'T socialist, culturally, until very recent times. Bill Clinton, the last Democrat president before Obama, BRISTLED at the charge. Because socialism was a dirty word. Then, poof. File all that away. We've always been a socialist nation, don't ya know? And we've always been at war with Oceania!

Holy crap, if this stuff is true then this whole story makes sense. The BO admin has been supplying weapons to rebels all across the 'arab spring', and BO wanted those weapons back before they could be used to do anything politically damaging in the election year, so the CIA and Stevens (who facilitated the supplying of said weapons) were sent to Benghazi where rebels were being held and interrogated (tortured), and they were there the same time the terrorist rebels launched an attack on the compound killing Stevens and the CIA agents (former Navy SEALs). Now Petreus was blackmailed about his affair and will be the fall guy for the whole Benghazi affair, to cover up the fact that O was supplying weapons to dangerous terrorists and that rebels were being held and tortured in the Benghazi compound on his watch. I think insolvency at the federal level is much more likely that succession. There would need to be a genuinely regional rift between two distinct cultures for succession to be realistic. Our rift is ideological and virtual.
There may well be succession if the DC goes tits up, but that would be a formal matter to protect the state's residents from liability for federal debts. And at that point DC would be in no position to enforce the union. But a classical succession movement is extremely unlikely. Posted by: runninrebel at November 13, 2012 12:15 AM (J4gw3) 392

Everyone here would agree that things look impossibly bleak for our country. Damn near impossible to defeat the Democrat demographics and platform we say. Yet, we must look at who is running the show. Is it the utterly inept servants of a social engineering experiment which has always failed. Or is it the Lord Almighty who created us and the galaxies around us. Jesus said to Pilate if weren't for the Father placing Pilate in power he wouldn't even be questioning him. The reasons the Leftist hate Christ so much is because He takes them off their throne of self-
importance. Fear not the leftists and what they can do but fear Him who can cast the body into hell. All the lies and deceptions the leftists heap upon us are really heaped upon their puny souls. It is a story that indicts everyone. Jim Kendall is cruel. The barber is so morally blind that he mistakes Jim’s evil for innocent fun. The townspeople never question Jim’s motives or those of his cronies at Wright’s poolroom and, because no one sees Paul as human, they cannot conceive of him plotting to kill Kendall. Even the reader is lulled to sleep by the easy delivery of the barber. It is only on the second read that many readers understand how terrible the people in this town are, and how awful Lardner thinks people are in general.

Sam, The problem with that is reasonable people believed Obama couldn't go negative unless he had a good record to run on. This is the lesson learned....we now know the IQ of the country. Romney played defense late in the game, and I for one do not believe the election was on the up-in-up. But I digress....It is possible that the Republican establishment never wanted to win, many believe thats why we had McCain last time, because the problems cannot be fixed...therefore there is no reason for Republicans to be left holding the bag when the homeowner wakes from his slumber. I also don't buy the "conservative bubble/cocooning" meme. I hardly think it's outrageous to think an incumbent president with a terrible economy and dismal approval ratings won't be able to get a d+6 turnout. I was hoping for r+1 or even, or at worst D+3. I think that was a reasonable assumption based on history. Of course, none of us knew what a disaster ORCA and the ground game would be.
After some time for reflection now, I refuse to believe that we need a major overhaul for the party. We didn't lose because of messaging or demographics. Supposedly this is breaking--I just found it so don't know how old it is. _____________ General Investigated for Emails to Petraeus Friend By ROBERT BURNS AP National Security Writer ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT November 13, 2012 (AP) The Pentagon says the top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation for alleged "inappropriate communications" with Jill Kelley, the woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom former CIA Director David Petraeus had an extramarital affair. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday. Panetta says he ordered a Pentagon investigation of Allen on Monday. A senior defense official, who discussed the matter only on condition of anonymity because it is under investigation, said Allen's communications were with Kelley, who has been described as an unpaid social liaison at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., which is headquarters to the U.S. Central Command. 449 Arright I'm out. Sam deserves the Shanaban Hammer for the race-based politics.
- Nowadays, race-based politics is just bringing a gun to a gunfight. Race is what the Democratic Party is all about. Race is why they are winning. They're importing a new nation on the assumption that it will vote the way the want, and they are right. The Republican Party gets 90% of its votes from Whites, and Mitt Romney won both sexes and every age group among Whites, but he lost because non-Whites vote 80% Democrat, and the Democrats take care to import millions of them while promoting anti-family values that drive down the fertility of Whites. That is what the fight is about. If you don't address that, you're just kidding yourself. And you will lose. And the Republican Party is indeed losing, specifically by not living up to its responsibility to give political protection to its mass base. The party acts like a general who thinks he can afford to let his soldiers all be killed and he will win anyway through his abstract principles and genius. It's not working. How far from the original intent of the Constitution would the country have to drift before such a thing could be an acceptable consideration? Good evening again. I'm only kinda here. Wind's blowing, temperature's dropping, day ending in Y, odds of internet going increasing.
what was your linen decision '12? Posted by: Kalneva at November 12, 2012 10:59 PM (cQmXn) Howdy, Kalneva! After going back and forth with what was available in store at Bed, Bath Beyond I eventually settled on the teal. Gray wasn't me, purple and red insisted on themselves, chocolate and tan remind me of work, and white...well, I had to debate it but eventually teal won out. Something about it just seemed more inviting. Now as for the comforter I've decided any cheap piece of shite will do. I'll hardly use it save for a total of a month out of the year and nothing at BBB looked good or if it did was too expensive whereas Target has some better ones and will be selling 'em cheap on Black Friday. Give Kohl's a look-see, too. Posted by: Robert at November 13, 2012 01:43 AM (4ixH5) 548

logprof, I don't argue about standard deviations and points of IQ and such like some others, basically for that reason. Politically, "free stuff at Whitey's expense" is a winning agenda. That's enough to drive events.
You can get too caught up in IQ issues even if it's all true. You could say lower IQ non-racial groups need free stuff at Whitey's expense more because they are less able to earn good money themselves, or you could say higher IQ non-White groups see the advantages of free stuff at Whitey's expense more clearly. You can argue about all the different national cultures that go into the "Hispanic" category, and all the different national cultures that go into the "Asian" category. And when you are done arguing, the election returns will come in and show that, Hispanic or Asian, low IQ or high IQ, this culture or that culture, "let's take Whitey's stuff and give it to ourselves" commands big majorities of non-Whites. Really interesting how ABC is going at full steam ahead--now.
Jake Tapper had that email from Stevens to State requesting a DC-3. Have to go back to look at the date on that but he might have had that before the Oversight Committee doc dump. If{/i} Tapper at ABC had that first--the whistle blowers might have tried to go to ABC first... Also--it smells to high hell that all this honey pot crap is coming out--now. Could be pay back. ABC News had that email about Stevens requesting a DC-3 on October 5th. ___________ [i]Oct 5, 2012 7:00am Email Shows State Department Rejecting Request of Security Team at US Embassy in Libya ABC News has obtained an internal State Department email from May 3, 2012, indicating that the State Department denied a request from the security team at the Embassy of Libya to retain a DC-3 airplane in the country to better conduct their duties. Copied on the email was U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in a terrorist attack on the diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, Sept. 11, 2012, along with three other Americans. That attack has prompted questions about whether the diplomatic personnel in that country were provided with adequate security support. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/10/email- shows-state-department-rejecting-request-of- security-team-at-us-embassy-in-libya/ _____________________ The Oversight Committee doc dump was on October 10th. Dont be smug. It's not just the Dems and Secret Service who are getting paid to get their brains fucked out. I am sure that Repubs have got in on that angle too.
To end on a more positive note, maybe their brains have been so fucked out that we can legally and safely declare them brain dead and euthanize them. See Terri Schiavo for legal precedent. Posted by: L, just L at November 13, 2012 02:02 AM (QRf5S) 568
