Peter King: If Obama Wasn't Told...

I must object to this.

It's a standard trope of argument to take an opponent's statement -- even if it doesn't seem true -- as true, and then make arguments based on that.

In this case, Peter King is saying if it's true the FBI and Eric Holder never told Obama that Petraeus was compromised, that speaks poorly of them.

This is often a useful form of argument.

But not here. I realize people don't feel comfortable lodging the term "liar" at every step but it must be said here.

It is simply untrue that Holder and Mueller didn't tell Obama. I do not need a cite for this. It is simply impossible to imagine otherwise.

What did everyone here do when they first read this? Why, you probably told someone else. It's juicy, it's interesting. It's both cloak-and-dagger and slap-and-tickle. It's also, of course, important.

Most sex scandals are not truly important. This one is.

So Holder and Mueller had official reasons for telling Obama that Petraeus was compromised. They also had unofficial reasons-- it's an interesting bit of dirt on someone once touted as a possible Republican presidential candidate (and then later as a possible vice presidential candidate).

But the story they're putting out is that they ignored both the requirements of their positions as top advisers (officially, they were required to tell the chief foreign policy and national security executive in the country) and also ignored the purely human urge to tell tales out of school?

It's not plausible, it's not credible. It's a lie. Plain and simple. Let's not dance around with the if they're telling the truth... formulation in this case. They're not telling the truth. There is no need to entertain a possibility if it's not a possibility.

They're lying, and they're obviously lying, and they're lying in a patently ridiculous way.

The only question is, Why are they lying?

32 King et alii need to build a case, fast, for POTUS suborning perjury on the part of (now ex-)DCI Petraeus' testimony before Congress the other week -- you know, where he parrotted the White House line about the Muhammad video being the trigger for the "spontaneous" riot.
I say this given that Jennifer Griffin at Fox has now reported that indeed the CIA was holding prisoners at their Benghazi annex location; this squares with Broadwell's remarks at a filmed 26 October lecture at the University of Denver (?) that this was the case, that Petraeus had learned of this, and that the sense among Petraeus' folks was that the chief object of the 11 September 2012 attack was actually the CIA location holding-pen. Existence of which was in express contravention of a 2009 Executive Order, and about which the POTUS and DCI might both have been fully aware prior to 11 Sep.

Petraeus had been staying with them in their line about "it was The Video"...
But he wasn't under oath.

He was about to be sworn in...in front of Congress...where he might've told the truth.
I think that was too big of a risk for them to take.

By appearing to be scapegoating Petraeus, they've reverse-Alinskied you guys into behaving as if Petraeus is Your Man In Washington, even though he's firmly on the other side (other from *yours*) in this whole War on Terror deal.

So, they're smarter than you. They're making you dance, making you worship a man who hates you.

If their who-knew-what-when lying is purposeful, and its purpose is you-related, the purpose is probably this: Lying about trivialities directs the opposition's interest in the story toward trivia (timelines, bureaucratic information flows, etc.) and away from "What the fuck is the story here?"

So what the fuck is the story?

Is there a story?

I bet there isn't.

So he votes "Present" by claiming to have no idea what was going on, just like he did with Benghazi.

And that might work for some people, but it's his job to know these things.

Ronald Reagan was smeared as a senile buffoon who ate jellybeans all day and was clueless as to what was happening in his administration. Lord Rainbowshanks now claims this same ignorance as a virtue.

How about that? My hate is still fresh.

Petraeus has already played ball on Benghazi. He initially supported the YouTube/spontaneous mob cover story when he briefed key members of Congress shortly after the attack, even though we now know he knew differently.

88 1. When Petraeus was up for the job as CIA Director he would have been vetted. He would have had to take a polygraph. Its SOP. He would have been asked about affairs, about any embarrassing or damaging information. They should have discovered the affair then.

2. When Kelly complained about the emails last spring (April I think) and they discovered the Petraeus connection, the Director of the FBI would have been notified, who would have notified Holder at DOJ, who then should have notified the JEF. They should have notified the head of the Intelligence Committee. All that would have been SOP.

3. When Petraeus was interviewed by the FBI in Sept and admitted the affair, the Director of the FBI, the DOJ, the Intelligence Committee, and POTUS should have been notified

They are lying. They all knew. I no longer think that Petraeus is gonna admit the JEF refused to make any decision and thats why Benghazi was such a clusterfark. He is not gonna tell the truth or he would have already

The administration hid it because it could not come out before the election that the head of the CIA was stuck in a Fatal Attraction relationship while the ME, and Benghazi, burned.

But Petraeus will support the JEF if he ever does testify. We are so screwed

At some point (possibly accidentally, and probably in about 4 years),
we'll figure out what was really going on in the consulate in Benghazi.
CIA Prison? Selling AAMs to the Syrian resistance? Gathering up
swords to turn them into plowshares?

Then we'll all collectively go "well, duh."

Then those strong on defense Democrats will win another election.

My 21 year old son just told me, "You don't need top secret clearance to know the Benghazi consulate was CIA operation and a probably a prison. What did the state department do decide they needed to open consulate in Benghazi to help all the American tourist visiting war torn Libya or giving out visas to Libyans looking to come to USA on vacation."

91 Finally! I have been pointing out in comments here and eleswhere for several days that the idea that the FBI investigators would not tell their Director, and he would not tell the AG, who would in turn not tell the President, is laughable!

But that is precisely the assumption implicit in the "coverage" of this story in the mainstream media, who state as FACT that Obama found out two days after the election. Someone get over to NPR and let them in on the big secret - their boyfriend doesn't tell the truth when it doesn't suit him, and as it happens, it never suits him.

Calling Obama a liar is as controversial as calling the midday tropical sun hot. Both are obvious to all but those with their eyes firmly closed.

I never thought Petraeus was anything like that and the junta isn't scapegoating Petraeus, they're just stopping/delaying his testimony. I have no idea why any GOPer in Congress is allowing this - I don't give a shit what personal problems Petraeus might have, none of it excuses him from testifying on time. But ... this is all in with Shrillary leaving on a jet plane so that she isn't around to testify, either ... and they're accepting that total bullshit, too. Shrillary was around to dance on the coffins of the Benghazi dead and lie her retarded ass off about it all but now she's off on a world tour. She should be served with contempt and so should Petraeus. And the rest of the junta, too, as this is all so transparent it would be funny if it weren't so seriously dangerous.

They probably told him this affair never need be made public. Then when Benghazi happened, they were able to secure his silence.

As soon as Obama was re-elected, they cut him loose. Foolo.

If he was honorable, he would make public everything he knows about Benghazi. But, if he were honorable, he would have done that before the election and probably should have resigned as well.

My guess?
I suspect that the investigation started before Ryan was announced as Romney's VP candidate. There was a slim chance that Petreus might get the nod, and this would have been a huge embarassment for a Romney/Petreus ticket. Once Ryan was announced, the delay became a potential source of embarassment for Obama, so the news of the investigation was delayed until just after the election.

Otherwise, this will die down and ultimately be accorded "birfer" status, just like questions regarding voter fraud. That's all "unfair" and possibly even "racist" and has Bad Optics, you know. When the sewer isn't repaired, the shit keeps flowing.

151 Now we know the real reason why Barky avoided all those Security Briefings.
....Deniability.

Notice I didn't say..."plausible deniability".
Because it's his job to know things.

But 'deniability' has served him well.
It doesn't have to be plausible.

Posted by: wheatie at November 12, 2012 02:19 PM (ICEh3)

Meh. Barky doesn't need any sort of deniability. He just denies things - even obvious things. He and his junta spent two weeks stressing that the Benghazi attack was over a youtube video, jailed the guy connected to it, and then turned around and claimed they never blamed it on the video.

We are in the third world where the ruler needs no deniability of any sort. He just denies things. It's Sukarno come to the West. Big surprise.

164 The Federal Civil Service is the largest, most efficient rumor mill in existence. If there was a rumor, a hint, even a slight whiff of any indiscretion, especially within the Executive ranks, it would take exactly until lunchtime for news of it to be all over - and I mean ALL over - town. So there is no plausible way that the FBI, Eric "Dick" Holder, et al, didn't know at least the basic gist of it.
Thing is, nobody's really all that surprised, at least at the antics of Mr. Petraeus. What's probably shocked the shit out of them is the fact that it all came out this soon after the election. Makes it a little harder to maintain that aura of complete ignorance.
They'll manage, though. I have faith in them. People who are this good at lying are rarely called on it.

239 Once again I have to say- it doesn't matter if Obama was told or not.

If he was, he knowingly kept as the head of the CIA a man known to be a major security risk. How compromised was he? Apparently the pillow-talk between him and his squeeze included information so classified that he lied to Congress about it- if you listen to her, at least. How compromised was he? Compromised enough that when the FBI realized that his email address was involved, they didn't go to him and say "Hey, did you know someone hacked your email?"

If he wasn't, then his Attorney General has gone completely off the reservation, as have the majority of his senior DoJ staff- indicating gross negligence and incompetence on his part.

Either of those should be worthy of impeachment.

246 http://tinyurl.com/7sm9bkd (Fox News, June 8, 2012)

On the evening of Tuesday, June 30, 2009—just five months into his
administration—Barack Obama invited a small group of presidential
historians to dine with him in the Family Quarters of the White House.
His chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, personally delivered the invitations
with a word of caution: the meeting was to remain private and off the
record. As a result, the media missed the chance to report on an
important event, for the evening with the historians provided a
remarkable sneak preview of why the Obama presidency would shortly go
off the rails.

---

During the presidential campaign, most of the evening’s dinner
guests, like their liberal counterparts in the media, had dropped any
pretense at objectivity. For instance, Michael Beschloss ('Presidential
Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989')
described Obama as “probably the smartest guy ever to become president,”
which appeared to put Thomas Jefferson in his place.

Judging from Mr. Obama’s questions, one subject was uppermost in his
mind: how could he become a “transformational” president and bend the
historic trajectory of America’s domestic and foreign policy?

When one of the historians brought up the difficulties that Lyndon
Johnson, another wartime president, faced trying to wage a foreign
military venture while implementing an ambitious domestic agenda, Mr.
Obama grew testy. He implied that he was different, because he could
prevail by the force of his personality. He could solve the worst
financial crisis since the Great Depression, put millions of people back
to work, redistribute wealth, withdraw from Iraq, and reconcile the
United States to a less dominant role in the world.

I won.

Posted by: Romeo13 at November 12, 2012 03:04 PM (lZBBB)

287 1. This affair was known about while Petraeus was in Afghanistan. That would be before he retired, and prior to him being named to CIA.

2. Of course Obama knew. He used the threat of reveling the affair and Petraeus getting demoted (with demoted pension) to get himto accept the CIA position.

3. So then compromised Petraeus was in CIA and was being talked about like he should be a candidate (pres or veep). This talk mostly came from the Obama people, who were trying tolure Romney inot making that mistake.

4. When Benghazi happened, I notice this all looked like it was going to get dumped on the CIA. I think they were trying to force Petraeus to do it. For all I know, someone in the CIA had info and was getting ready to drop it against Obama.

5. The idea that Obama didn't know is, of course, ridiculous. However, everyone is going to try to shift blame to Holder or someone in the FBI because if they don't, Obama is guilty of blackmail and extortion, which are felonies which fall under high crimes and misdemeanors, and the GOP wants no part of another impeachment.

using the 'assume it's true" formulation.

If the CIA annex held prisoners--the attack on the consulate was to divide the resources at the annex--if they went for a rescue--and to pin down the resources at the consulate.

But then, again this is all based on the rather questionable assertion--

296 "The only question is, Why are they lying?"

In case this is what you're hinting at, let's get this out of the way; this isn't about silencing a white knight riding in like the cavalry.

Petraeus is straight corporate military. His testimony, at best, would merely present the CIA's side of things from their own bureaucratic point of view, and cast Lord Rainbowshanks in a slightly less glorious light than Team Obama would prefer. But that's it.

Peaches is getting the knife because he's a former (and potential future) rival whose fig-leaf presence in the administration has already served its purpose. But that time is past. Obama won. Now it's time to clean house.

Using the corpse of Petraeus's credibility and political viability as a monkeywrench to toss into the gears of the Benghazi investigation is just a bit of ad-libbed irony on their part. They enjoy it, sure. It sends a nice message to other rivals. Very Chicago. But Petraeus was a dead-career-walking the second this scandal hit Eric Holder's desk. It was inevitable. Only the timing was in question.

304 Also on Oct 15th or there about there was a prison break--so that could be where Broadwell got her inspiration.

Weekly Standard Oct. 15th

The Associated Press reports on a mass prison break in Tripoli, Libya:

Libya's Supreme Security Committee says 120 prisoners have escaped from jail in the capital city of Tripoli, where security guards are suspected of having accepted bribes to free them.

Spokesman Abdel-Moneim al-Hurr says only two of the 120 have been arrested since their escape Monday. It is the second jailbreak in Tripoli this year.

Prisoners say that since Libya's uprising, some have been languishing in prisons without charge. They also say the courts have not moved to hear their cases.

368 Nuclear fuel from Enterprise headed for Idaho
The Associated Press
Posted : Sunday Nov 11, 2012 16:53:47 EST
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Spent nuclear fuel from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Enterprise that is being decommissioned will be sent to eastern Idaho for study and storage, a Navy spokesman says.

Tom Dougan of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program tells the Post Register the spent fuel from the ship’s eight reactors will arrive at the Naval Reactors Facility at the Idaho National Laboratory in 2015.

RELATED READING

11/5: Enterprise to be dismantled at Bremerton

11/4: ‘Big E’ returns home after final deployment

“Many of the major components and other equipment are nearing the end of their useful life, and it’s not cost effective to further extend the Enterprise for combat operations,” Dougan said.

The world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ended its remarkable career at sea Nov. 4 when it pulled into its home port at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia for the final time after participating in every major conflict since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.

Dougan said the spent nuclear fuel once in Idaho will be examined to help with future reactor design research before being placed in storage.

“(The) fuel is transported via rail in specially designed railcars that meet the Department of Transportation shipping requirements for spent nuclear fuel,” he said. “The Navy has been managing spent fuel in Idaho since the late 1950s.”

The Navy will officially deactivate the Enterprise on Dec. 1, but it will take several more years for it to be decommissioned as its reactors are taken out.

After spent fuel is removed at Norfolk, the Navy plans to tow the Enterprise to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton in Washington state. The nuclear reactors will be cut out of the ship and barged to the Hanford nuclear reservation.

The reactors will be buried in a trench the Navy has been using since 1986 to bury radioactive reactors from other nuclear-powered vessels, mostly submarines.

Reactor disposal will take six to eight years. The rest of the Enterprise will be scrapped at Bremerton.

An inglorious end to an heroic Lady. But such is life for a Nuclear Ship/Boat

369 Some guy named Lincoln had something to say about that.

Yeah, he did. And it probably ended up killing the US slightly slower than allowing the secession would have.

Prior to the Civil War, several states had threatened secession- no one once doubted their right to do so. So it wasn't until Lincoln that anyone thought you couldn't secede.

Uh, WTF?

Last TOTAL damage estimate I saw a few days ago (for all states, and including economic losses, i.e. nothing whatsoever to with repairs) was around $50 billion, with NY about 30% of that (i.e $15 billion), and actual damage, as opposed to economic loss, around 60% of that, so $9 billion.

And much of that would be covered by insurance.

381 54 At some point (possibly accidentally, and probably in about 4 years), we'll figure out what was really going on in the consulate in Benghazi. CIA Prison?

Actually, this IS what was going on. CIA was holding these guys secretly. The bad guys found out where and attacked to get their buddies free.

No rescue was sent, because if people are rescued, questions like 'why was the CIA secretly holding and interrogating terrorists' get asked.

This was a coverup. Thanks to Petraeus' inability to control himself, he talked to his girlfriend, who couldn't keep her mouth shut.

So, in fact, we owe a great debt to Paula Broadwell.

382 This one is important? Not really. We have already had Holder lie through his teeth to Congress on Fast and Furious. That one was important, too. Border agents getting shot, many dead in a foreign country. Were there consequences. No and the Dems did all they could to avoid the truth. Petraeus was a liar here given what he told Congress about the "spontaneous" protest. Now we know he is a liar who cheated on his wife. He gave us "victory" in Iraq (in reality, victory a mile wide and an inch deep now that we know who will be running that country). He got our service members killed in both Iraq and Afghanistan to win the hearts and minds of savages (we won neither and lost the wars).

An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban,
called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in
Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues,
local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former
President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to
remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove
such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha
statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an
Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

I think Texas is about to secede

Setting aside all the problems with secession generally, it would be nice to have some country that was more conservative/libertarian than the USA. It would be a good counter example to the leftist statist BS that the Dems want to pull. Right now, the USA is the most "free" state on the planet ("free" in the libertarian sense, not the anarchist sense).

IF these discussions were going on withing the Halls of Power here in TX, I would hope that moves were already being made to secure the US Military resources within the State.

Because then we have a fighting chance.

Also- second the notion you go get some sleep. When I don't want to dope up too much, I'll use valerian (sp?) root. One capsule is usually enough to let me wind down and sleep. If I really can't sleep (and I know I have at least 8.5 hours) I'll take 2.

That's why I think it entirely possible Obama wasn't told. Even before campaign season he was highly disengaged, rarely meeting with his own cabinet or congressional leaders. He had briefings sent to his iPad instead of personally attending. He did manage a hundred rounds of golf, so there is that.

I mean, how often does Mueller even get an audience with The One? My guess: almost never.

You know the answer to this, Sven.

We let our compassion and our honor...be used against us.
We fight with honor...they don't.
We let things like 'political correctness' and 'multiculturalism' creep in...when they are simply cloaking devices for curtailing Freedom of Speech and devaluing our own culture.

If we are going to "let it burn", then we must demand that R's in congress block all bailouts to the states which should burn first.
Bailouts will only delay the burn.

"Jennifer Griffin at Fox has now reported that indeed the CIA was holding prisoners at their Benghazi annex location; this squares with Broadwell's remarks at a filmed 26 October lecture at the University of Denver (?) that this was the case, that Petraeus had learned of this, and that the sense among Petraeus' folks was that the chief object of the 11 September 2012 attack was actually the CIA location holding-pen. Existence of which was in express contravention of a 2009 Executive Order, and about which the POTUS and DCI might both have been fully aware prior to 11 Sep."

As for his affair compromising security, isn't this proof of that? That Broadwell knew of the prisonsers at the CIA annex and the one who must have told her was Petraeus?
Wasn't she essentially outting Petraeus at the same time she may have been trying to protect him (by saying he wasn't allowed to speak to the press?).
All the way around, a huge mess, all because of Obama's "light-foot" Mideast policies and all because the Chicago boys think they know what the hell they're doing.
It's going to be really tough, as the layers of the onion are peeled off one by one, to get any Dems to say the POTUS knew anything. They will not. The black folk I know are already convinced (which is one reason black folk never climb out of their socioeconomic mess and dysfunction--it's just easier to lie to yourself about the man keeping you down than to admit your own fuckin' failings as a group) that whites in general are out to get Obama..

452 But I'm thinking Benghazi , instead of a a full-blown "secret prison," did detain interrogate subjects and then relocate them to prisons elsewhere More like a secret Hoosegow.

So they tried to fake everybody out there by looking defenseless as if to advertise no need for defence. HEY GUYS WE ARE harmless and unobtrusive; but the mistake of gaining such an appearance not with camouflauge but actual weak security, to the point of not letting anyone there have some when it was needed and begged for, and incidents were increasing and escalating.

If there were trying to fool the people there, they didn't do a very good job. I think they will have more success fooling Americans, though, and keeping them from understanding how the facility was being used and how necessary boosted security had been. If Americans find out now, it'll be like Obama just murdered a bunch of Americans to hide his methods.

453 Some of this situation *really* pisses Scooter Libby off, that's for sure.

Just had a delicious thought (even though he's a loon). I have no idea if there has been an impeachable offense such as obstruction of justice, but if so, the Obama admin has to worry about Old Joe, whose only chance of ever being President, a job he has coveted for decades, is if his boss is impeached.
I'd think Barry and group would never show their hand to the Veep, but some things are hard to hide.
It's nice to think about their having to worry about Joe as well as so many other things.

455 Would be interested in knowing the lying "national security briefings" given to Romney by the Obama admin. Once he got those briefings is when it seems he decided to NOT go after Bammy at all on foreign affairs.

You recall Admiral Poindexter protected Reagan with "plausible deniability."
I can buy that Holder would hold off telling Obama until after the election as long as it was only for a few weeks. However, the thing that I don't buy that some began saying yesterday is that the affair didn't begin until after he became Director.
Every journalist now who had been in Afghanistan said it was a not so secret secret that they were a twosome.

137"I imagine Obama probably has an arrangement that all news come through Valerie Jarrett. She decides whether it is ok for him to "hear" it or not."
That's probably 100% accurate.

459 They are lying because Obama should have either made him resign before the election or told the American people, among other things.

460 Oh and one of the women at Fox (Catherine Herridge or the other one) said they had heard it is true there were detainees in Benghazi (contrary to US policy and the CIA statement today).

461 Why are they lying? It's what they do, it's who they are. These people are incapable of telling the truth when a lie would suit their purposes just as well.
