I do not believe that any nation in the history of the world has buried its soldiers farther from its native soil than we Americans -- or buried them closer to the towns in which they grew up.

We celebrate this Veterans Day for a very few minutes, a few seconds of silence and then this country's life goes on. But I think it most appropriate that we recall on this occasion, and on every other moment when we are faced with great responsibilities, the contribution and the sacrifice which so many men and their families have made in order to permit this country to now occupy its present position of responsibility and freedom, and in order to permit us to gather here together.

4 Other details emerged Saturday indicating that the Petraeus allegations became a secret election-night drama for the Obama administration. That evening, the Justice Department informed the director of national intelligence, James R. Clapper Jr., that their investigation had unearthed compromising information about the CIA director, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official.

Clapper then spoke with Petraeus and urged him to resign, notifying the White House the next day. That sequence has become a source of controversy, raising questions among some members of Congress about why key intelligence committees were not notified earlier and why the FBI waited before informing the administration about a probe that had stumbled onto embarrassing details about the CIA chief.

The law enforcement officials did not provide an exact timeline for the investigation, but they said the inquiry started several months ago. They said investigators thought they were dealing with a routine harassment case until some communications were traced to a private e-mail account belonging to Petraeus.

The sexually explicit nature of the communications caused investigators to suspect that someone had broken into Petraeus’s e-mail account, leading to concerns about potential national security breaches, according to the officials. As the investigation proceeded and more evidence emerged, including Broadwell’s role, FBI investigators realized they had uncovered an affair between Petraeus and Broadwell, the officials said.

The e-mails from Broadwell indicated that she thought the other woman was becoming involved with Petraeus, according to the officials. They said the e-mails were “threatening and harassing” but not specific enough to warrant criminal charges.

One of the officials said that the recipient of the e-mails complained to Petraeus about them and that the FBI later obtained e-mails between Petraeus and Broadwell in which they discussed the harassment.

The investigators first interviewed Petraeus about two weeks ago, the officials said. They reviewed the evidence with him but did not suggest that he should resign or that he would be charged with a crime, according to the officials.

One of the officials said Justice Department officials were unclear on what steps to take after they concluded that there would be no charges against the CIA director or Broadwell and that there had been no breach of national security.

“What was our responsibility?” said one of the officials. “We were in an area where we’d never been before.”

The notification finally came Tuesday evening, while polls were still open across the country in an election that would return President Obama to office for four more years.

“Director Clapper learned of the situation from the FBI on Tuesday evening around 5 p.m.,” a senior U.S. intelligence official said. “In subsequent conversations with Director Petraeus, Director Clapper advised Director Petraeus to resign.”

To my Vidor, Texas bull riding friend Emmett Horn, killed December 23, 1964 during an ambush in the Ashau valley, I Corp, South Vietnam.


Emmett was a leading a patrol of CIDG (civilian irregular defense group) infantry when attacked from ambush. The CIDG hunkered down instead of responding forcefully, and Emmett was attempting to rally the force. He was fatally wounded from a head shot.

If I were an employer, I would fire anyone I know that voted for TFG. Not kidding.

I was thinking, that if I were a business owner, I would get my "salary" just below the high tax rate coming. It wouldn't be hard. Not only could they "spread" the "income" around, but hire spouses, push more into "company expense," etc.

Push everyone to 28 hours a week. Or, two 20 hour "shifts."

Businesses are going to get creative to get around TFG's shit regulations and policies, now.

It's only going to get worse. Far worse.

Government will eventually have to downsize, and pensions and benefits will be squeezed. No matter how hard they try to prop it up. If there is no income from the private sector, there is no income to feed the beast.

43 Dad served in the Navy...Fighting Seabees...served a couple tours in Viet Nam....brother in Army,,,,another brother in the Navy....I served in Air Force and my hubby retired from the Navy after 26 years.

I really knew no other life than the military, It was a good life with great friends along the way.

It makes me sad to see our nation wounded like this, knowing all the folks who have given so much.

55 My wifes uncle at 93 years old, is now bedridden with hospice and we are waiting. No diseases to speak of, just wearing out. Has had dementia for a while. Was a 2nd Lieutenant in WWII and a paratrooper. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant after Operation Varsity. Never spoke of what he did or what happened in the war. Now the dementia makes him babel and talk of things that are probably war related. We have gone through some of his service items. Found a diary that was interesting. He had written out the "Blood on the Risers" song in its entirety. That is the song they were singing in Band of Brothers.

San Francisco Reporter Beaten and Robbed During Live Shot (Video)

KPIX-TV cameraman Gregg Welk was attacked by a group of young men during a live-shot this week in Oakland. The youths punched him and stole his camera while he was on assignment on a busy Oakland street.

The attack and robbery happened in broad daylight.

You have to job-share with Betty because your position that is full-time will have to be 2 part-time positions. You have to get a second job at 20-25 hours, no healthcare, to pay the bills. My father joined in 1937, served at Pearl until he was sent back to CA in 1940 after being injured in a plane crash. The family never learned details, but he had "interesting" (classified) duty in Asia before WWII. Flew sub patrol out of Coronado in PBYs from 1942.

My godfather was a Navy combat photographer in the Pacific.

Me? 4F and regretted it to this day.

So when he started talking about how corporations weed out information as it is sent to the top, and how new organizations have those closer to the information handle things and that that is more efficient, the host said, "Oh, sort of like how government should handle most problems at the local level, rather than a top down management."

Complete panic as he realized the contradiction, and he said "Oh, not the same at ALL! Government has to operate differently, because it's government!"

They talk about tax rates on the rich, i suggest tax rates of 90% with the money being distributed in food stamps and unemployment benefits directly because the economy is horrible. This only works if you do it with a straight face and they can believe you though. If you were going around saying "Obama is going to kill us all" before the election I dont think they wil buy it.

My next move is to start agreeing with them when they talk about how right wing fox news is, and say that obama should shut it down. they spread lies, they are not a news organization. Noone should be able to watch them, only CNN, MSNCB, or PBS. I think I will also suggest that our current national security posture should give the administration veto power on foreign affairs stories, because we shouldnt rile up hatred that you know the reich wing will have to muslims if they hear of anything like terrorist attacks. He was in the Cavalry out of McAllen TX, but instead of having a horse, he had a donkey because of how rocky and steep the road was. Both my brothers served in the vietnam era. My nephew was Force Recon, served in the first Gulf War, Operation Freedom, behind enemy lines, calling in strikes. My daughter served two tours in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne, and my son in law is currently serving in A-stan. I am both grateful and proud to have a lineage and decendency that includes so many brave warriors.

The R's in the House should let O raise taxes for those that make over $500,000/year to 80% and get rid of all the deductions and loopholes in the tax code. Hell, they voted for this shit, as Menken said-give it to them good and hard. Tax the snot out of the rich, just hold the line and make sure the middle class doesn't get screwed. When that vote comes up in the House the Repubs that don't want to vote for a tax increas shoul just vote Present and let it sit on the shoulder of the Dem's.

245 As some consider the path forward after Tuesday, there is a little story I'd like to remember on this Veteran's Day.

In June, 1942 the Japanese Navy had marched over nearly a third of the Earth's surface, essentially uncontested. It's men were highly trained, it's ships and planes innovative, its numerical superiority unmistakeable. By all normal measures, it should have easily taken the island of Midway on June 4, 1942. It did not. But that is not what I want to talk about.

Among the forces thrown against the Japanese Kido Butai that day were three American torpedo plane squadrons. Their planes were outdated, their torpedos slow and unreliable, they had no fighter protection, and they came in piecemeal. Facing them was perhaps the best fighter plane in the world in the Mitsibushi Zero. The men flying these planes were under little illusions about their mounts before the battle. They knew the odds. Yet they manned them that day, flew them that day, fought them that day.

And, almost to the man, died in them that day. Three squadrons. 35 out of 41 airplanes. No hits scored.

History is full of cases such as this. In the case of Midway, the battle was a victory. A similiar "forlorn hope", a few months earlier, at the Battle of the Jave Sea, had been both a massacre and a defeat of no redeeming value. Sometimes victory just simply goes to the bigger battalions.

But not always. Two years later, at the Battle of Samar, an entire Japanese battle fleet was turned back by woefully outgunned tin cans and planes equipped with the wrong kind of bombs. At Bastogne, a lightly equipped parachute division and elements of others held off four German ones, including two Panzer units. Victory sometimes goes to those willing to hold on, no matter what.

The message on this Veteran's Day is simply this: You can lose. You can win. The first never demands you make a decision to fight. The second always does.

Or now, our right to our own bodies and medical decisions trumped by the IRS of all agencies in order to provide a more perfect Big Brother via unaffordable mandated universal health care with exceptions for all with the money to maneuver their own choices.

Not a landslide, not a mandate for socialism. And I DO NOT BUY this "permanent demographic shift" bullshit.

This loss was a combination of 1) poor GOTV vs. good GOTV 2) early negative advertising advantage by Obama set image of Romney as greedy and out of touch 3) Hurricane Sandy and Turncoat Christie, 4 ) fraud

The article concludes that the "expand the map" strategy pushed by Rove was lethal in the end and suggests that had the campaign focused instead on those 4 swing states, we could have won.

What baffles me, still, are these things: high EV numbers in swing states, party i.d. polls by Gallup and Rasmussen showing high Rep numbers, Oct polls showing Romney several points ahead, numerous polls showing an enthusiasm gap by Republicans.

When McCain lost I had no questions about the outcome but this time it's hard to reconcile some of the facts with the result.

One silver lining for me in this grueling election cycle was discovering a number of strong, black conservatives on twitter. It's heartening to see people out there standing up for what's right even though I'm sure they pay a high price in their personal - and probably even professional - lives.

I know that the years I spent in academe as a conservative were emotionally draining and it did adversely affect my professional life as well.

That's why when the Smart Set decide to abdicate on issues that are of importance to many conservatives, including many black conservatives, it infuriates me. Most of our betters in the GOP have few negative repercussions -- win or lose, they make sure they still have jobs and mix with the right set. Eff them all to hell.

Where I live, my closest warehouse store is 30 miles away. (moved to a red state shortly after '08 election made it clear the end was near)

My wife and I recently joined Sam's Club and no longer give money to Costco.

My husband I are are thinking about coming home to Texas. In Colorado, I've got two democrat senators. My congressman is ok, but he barely won our district this time.

My family moved to Texas in the 1830's. I haven't lived there since I was in my early 20's - My husband was in the military and we moved around a lot. Settled in Colorado for practical reasons. Maybe time to head home.
