Happy Birthday United States Marine Corps

237 years. Established by the Continental Congress on Nov 10, 1775 during the American Revolution. Here's a link to a pretty cool timeline, lots of photos and history.

42 They did not know who came for them
In their entrenched redoubts
Who should be pressed into the sands
By blustering and shouts

Yet it did not turn out as planned
Through fire and horror scenes
They saw their vanguard swept away
By the United States Marines

The brotherhood of soldiering
That does not have a peer
That always answers freedom call
And all that we hold dear

So when you spot the Red and Blue
Topped by a snow white cover
Shout Semper Fi and raise your chin
And treat them as a brother

8404 designation:

Training to become an HM-8404 FMF Hospital Corpsman (Field Medical Service Technician) begins at Camp Lejeune, (FTMB - East) Jacksonville, North Carolina, or at Camp Pendleton, (FTMB - West) Oceanside, California, also known as FMTB - Field Medical Training Battalion. Each student is issued a MARPAT camouflage uniform to be worn throughout their training. Training is similar to basic training for the United States Marine Corps. Students must pass the physical fitness assessment (PFA), be able to accomplish multiple hikes for extended periods with weighted gear and utilize urban warfare and navigation tactics during field operations. Students must become proficient with the basics of invasive techniques such as needle thoracentesis, cricothyroidotomy, intraosseous device placement, intravenous therapy etc. Practical application labs as well as written tests are administered regularly during the training to establish competency. Students train daily in all weather conditions, and must learn how to disassemble, clean, and reassemble their M4 rifles. Any sailors not meeting the requirements to pass will be dropped from the program, 15% fail out before graduation. Upon completion of FMTB, Corpsmen are presented a Caduceus shield to wear on their left collar as a representation of their field medical capabilities. Graduates are also designated as "green" side corpsmen as opposed to "blue" side corpsmen who maintain their scope of practice in hospitals and clinics not in the field.

61 The only new thing under the sun is the history you do not know.

In June 1942, VT 8, a Navy torpedo squadron, flew off the deck of the USS Hornet to attack the Japanese fleet preparing to attack Midway. It was as critical a moment as any ever faced by the US military. Though their aircraft were badly obsolete _ slow, under armored, under armed _ every man prsssed home his attack and every man in the squadron but one died doing so.

In addition to bottomless valor and duty those brave patriots shared something else in common. Not one of them had ever fired a live round in training. For several, the battle was the first and only time they ever took off from a carrier with a torpedo.

Despite their total dedication, not one crew scored a hit. But the real scandal is that even if these brave but ill prepared heros had managed to drop their torpedoes it would not have mattered much. The torps likely would not have exploded as they were notoriously unreliable early in the war due to design defects. That was the practical result of FDR's decade of neglect of the Navy.

Think about that as Admiral Barky guts the military in the next four years.

82 I really dont think emailing my congressman will help.

Different forms of communication carry different weight with them. email and fax's ranks low as do pre-printed postcards duped and sent by the millions.

Maximum impact - a hand written hand addressed old school letter that's not being transcribed from a standard script. A few hundred hand written unique letters about something carry more weight than thousands of emails and tear out postcards you just stamp.

When someone takes the time to sit down at a desk and pen and old school letter, that says they're serious.

If those conservatives who sat out this election saw...were confronted with on a daily basis...the ugliness the left brings to the table, they might have been motivated to get up, and vote.

You are referring to the late Ens. George Gay, who was floating in the sea with a grandstand seat watching the Japanese fleet get destroyed.

The tragic story of Torpedo 8, and the woefully obsolete Douglas TBD Devastators will never be forgotten. Ironically, their sister aircraft, Douglas' immortal SBD Dauntless dive bombers were the aircraft that struck the fatal blows. Though just as obsolete as the TBD's, they were rugged, dependable and soldiered on through most of the war, gradually replaced by the TBF Avenger and SB2C Helldivers.

Oh what we could do today with the guts of just a handful of the brave, resourceful guys who flew those ships.

138 My kids school put on the most moving Veteran's Day assembly I have ever been to. Months ago they sent and e-mail asking for the names, service and conflict of any that the children's family members had served in. They invited all those family members to the school yesterday.

The kids all assembled in the school theater. A girls sang the national anthem, and then we all recited the pledge of allegiance, standing of course. A boy read a poem about the sacrifice of America's warriors and the debt we owe them. Then a girl played the Marine Corp Hymn on the piano.

Then the school's history teacher, dressed in his Navy uniform, read the names of the students who had vets in their family, what service, what conflict.

As your name was read you were to stand and be acknowledged by the students. The school choir came out and sand a medley of the service's anthems. When your service's song played, you were to stand again.

Then he played a video from wounded warriors. That was tough. The mostly WWII vets there were crying. Me too.

Next, the school's substitute teacher spoke. He was a Jewish boy growing up in Germany in the run up to WWII. When he was 9, his teacher called him to the head of the class and explained he was a dirty Jew and would not be able to go to school any more. He and his parents fled Europe for New York and he had to start kindergarten as a 9 year old because he did not know any English. He was drafted during the Korean War, and when they found out he could speak German they sent him to translate and assist in interrogations of Nazis awaiting charges and trail from WWII. He said they were unrepentant. And then he spoke of what an amazing country we live in.

Finally, the old gunny running the show read the poem "A Common Soldier".

My husband I were so moved.

With some help, they did chew up a lot of the German military. Its fair to say it was a shared effort. The Russians certainly took the heaviest losses.

After the war was over many German and Soviet generals remarked on Soviet tactics. ex. The Germans would clear mine fields, Zukhov just attacked through them as if they weren't there and accepted the 10% or so losses the mines caused. His theory was he'd have lost the 10% anyway halting an advance and becoming more vulnerable to air attack while a mine field was cleared...and it would have delayed the advance.

162 Just A Common Soldier
by A. Lawrence Vaincourt

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one

And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today

He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?

A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small

It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start

If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. The eagle represents the proud nation we defend. It stands at the ready with our coastlines in sight and the entire world within reach of its outstretched wings. The globe represents our worldwide presence. The anchor points both to the Marine Corps' naval heritage and its ability to access any coastline in the world. Together, the eagle, globe and anchor symbolize our commitment to defend our nation—in the air, on land and at sea.

Moreover, he would never have been reelected. Obama is going to destroy this country. He has begun and will continue to do so. And none of it would've been possible if the media did their jobs. But they didn't and here we are. The average voter, and even those of our close friends we deem "highly intelligent," know next to nothing about all the scandals that have rocked this administration. They know next to nothing about what's really in Obamacare and how it will ultimately affect them. They no nothing about the anti-American sentiment held by so many in this administration. The MFM kept them all in the dark. And it's made a profound difference.

Missing is the pennant in the eagle's beak bears the Corps' motto: Semper Fidelis, meaning "Always faithful." The "fouled" anchor represents the naval heritage and that the ship it is from is underway. The globe represents the world-wide reach or projection of the service, with the Western Hemisphere and North America displayed as the homeland and region the Corps is from and its first successes. The eagle represents the nation. Note that our parent service, the Royal Marines, uses two of these same symbols, with its globe face representing its success in "every corner of the globe."

231 Why the Branches of the Military Don't Get Along

It's largely due to the fact that there is no standardization of the terminology.

Take the phrase "Secure a building" for example.

To the Army this means that you set a perimeter and make sure nothing goes in or out.

To the Marines, this means going in room by room, neutralizing all
threats, setting a perimeter and God help anything that comes near the
place.

To the Navy it's turning off the lights and locking the door.

To the Air Force it is get a three year lease with an option to buy.

248 Husband Wrote Letter to NYTimes About Wife Having Affair with 'Government Executive'
Related to the Petraeus affair?
9:18 AM, NOV 10, 2012 • BY DANIEL HALPER Single PagePrintLarger TextSmaller TextAlerts
Here's a letter to the New York Times Magazine's "ethicist," which was published over the summer:

My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be “true to my heart” and walk away from the entire miserable situation and put the episode behind me? NAME WITHHELD

There is, as one might imagine, much speculation that this is somehow related to CIA director David Petraeus's affair with biographer Paula Broadwell. Or it could be completely unrelated.

I wonder if we are looking at the beginning of a Nixon/Watergate unraveling here? Hubris has gotten more people in trouble than gold and boards. Well ok maybe not broads.

Local runners will have a unique opportunity to support an ambitious
runner, honor veterans of American military service and get in a run of
their own on Sunday. On Veterans Day, ultrarunner and Army veteran Mike
Ehredt will finish a 2,140-mile run honoring service members who were
casualties of the war in Afghanistan.

Ehredt began the Project
America Run at the northern border of the U.S. in International Falls.
He will finish along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico at Stewart Beach in
Galveston.

260 "Marine Corps launches new diversity campaign".

I recall once reading that during WWII the Marine Corps adopted the Army practice of wearing division insignia on the shoulder of the uniform. After the war ended, however, the Commandant ended that practice declaring that the use of such insignia was intended to instill pride in one's division but Marines should not be divided amongst each other as there were only Marines.

Is not this new call for "diversity" in the Marine Corps inconsistent with that?

Sudden new report to Larry Kudlow of CNBC Kudlow Report on the sudden resignation of DCI David Petraeus. The information is that the resignation was not about the alleged affair. The resignation is about Benghazi. More twists ahead than a road on Gibraltar.

I'm gonna bet that Petreaus WANTS to testify. I suspect that when called to serve his country, he did so, and has been regretting it ever since.

100%. I remember back in my day (1980's-early 90's) the absolute worst insult to give to a Marine (at least by a fellow Marine) was to call him an 'individual'.

Unfortunately, politics has a way of asserting its ethos over the military. I remember the Tailhook scandal, and having to go through mandatory sensitivity/sexual harassment training. I knew right then that it was time to go. It only became worse with Clinton. Most of the guys I served with are all retired now, so I don't have any contacts with todays Marine Corps, but I can only imagine the PC crap they have to endure. Sort of like the old Soviet political officers, looking out for any hints of unauthorized thoughts. The upper echelons of all the services are filled with time serving political suck ups, I would like to think the Corps has a lower percentage than the other services, but it probably isn't so.

I knew when I heard that Army general tesitfying to Congress after the Ft. Hood massacre that the biggest problem he foresaw was if the Army did anything to disrupt the 'diversity' of the Army, which is its greatest strength. It is one thing when politicians and college presidents spout that pablum, but it is downright disgusting to hear it from a 'military' man.

What I was saying is if Baraka doesn't want Petraeus to testify, he won't testify. And this is whether Petraeus wants to or not. Dear Leader now has the final word on everything. The American people voted for dictatorship. It's what we'll get.

Another thing about the Petraeus resignation that I have been banging around in my head. If Petraeus was CIA director, he could be covered under executive priviledge, the same as Holder was on FF. If he is no longer in the executive branch, I suppose that no longer applies. Obama could probably attempt to withold documents under executive priveledge, but he couldn't exempt Petraeus from testifying as a private citizen as to his direct knowledge of events. I am not a lwayer (thanks be to God), so if I am wrong someone can correct me, but this sounds logical.

Happy Birthday, Marines.

I am eternally grateful to you, for your bravery and valor.
Ever vigilant, watching over us in places you'd rather not be...it humbles me to think of your sacrifices.

I'm so sorry that wewere unablegive you a better Commander in Chief.

272 It's only been about 15 years for me but yes, This.

I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps a couple generations ago. Sometimes
it was hard. Sometimes miserable. Most times boring. I was challenged
and generally rose to that challenge. It is part of who I am to this
day. I am proud to say I was a Marine. The young Marinestoday are more
professional, more dedicated and more deadly than I ever was. Semper Fi,
OORAH!

RAH! To tell the truth, I only did 4 odd years in during peace, and It made me more and less. I rose to the pinnacle they told me to climb and I'm DAMN proud of it, but it made me less when I left and came home because noone had ever been there, so I felt as though I fell.

If you believe, which I did, then it's hard to transition out. and 15 years later, I'm disgusted at my fellow citizen because they don't act like my fellow Marine.
