Breaking: David Petraeus Resigns As CIA Head

Over extra-marital affair?

I'm getting this second hand from people who saw it on TV.

Shit Just Got, Um, Weird [DrewM.]: Petraeus' affair was with a staffer for....Elizabeth Warren?

Or not. It was way too good to check or be true.

But, you think he had an affair as soon as he got to Washington, basically, and then had the honor to not ruin the election of the retard destroyer of America who had just committed what can only be considered an act of treason in Libya and the cover-up?

And then he announces his affair in his friggin letter of resignation?

217 A photojournalist for CBS 5 San Francisco was beaten and robbed of his camera by a group of young men in Oakland following a live newscast report Wednesday.

Photographer Gregg Welk and reporter Anne Makovec had just finished their noon report on the passage of Prop 30 in front of Oakland Technical High School on the 4300 block of Broadway.

After the live shot, an unknown number of men rushed up, punched Welk and grabbed his camera, according to CBS 5 Communications Director Akilah Bolden-Monifa.

The men then fled in a car with the camera. Welk suffered minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and released, according to Bolden-Monifa. Makovec was not hurt.

The attack was the latest among a series of incidents involving members of the press in Oakland. In recent months, journalists with the Oakland Tribune, KTVU and KNTV have been accosted and robbed of laptops, cameras and tripods. The cost of broadcast-quality cameras can run into the tens of thousands of dollars each.

During last year’s Occupy Oakland protests, a number of TV news vans were vandalized and a photographer for KGO-TV attacked while covering a murder near the Occupy encampment.

And then he announces his affair in his friggin letter of resignation? I don't think so. I don't think even close to "so".

-------

I don't really think much about this at all. I don't buy into every possible conspiracy theory. I'm sure this was all planned or maybe announced and that Obama sat on it or asked Petraeus to sit on it until after the election. I have no problem with that.

I have no clue what his involvement was with Benghazi. I don't think any of us do. That is the reason to call him in to testify. I don't see how his resignation affects this at all.

And I have no clue when he had his affair. I don't care. I don't know if he is honorable or not. Sure having an affair is not honorable, but great and honorable men throughout history have had affairs.

Maybe it all is too weird, too much of a coincidence. Call him in front of Congress and find out.

276 Options:

1. The simple one. He's generally an honorable man but strayed from his marriage. He couldn't take the deception any longer, or his wife found out, and he chose to honorably resign. He didn't want to do it before the election out of deference to his boss, so he waited until now. And he specified the reason for his resignation so people would not wrongly assume that he was resigning in protest.

2. The juicy one. His "affair" was with a prostitute, and his hand has been forced because it's about to become public.

3. The conspiratorial one. The administration has known of this for some time and has been using it as leverage to control him. He hoped to hang on if Romney won. When Obama got re-elected, he figured he was tired of the blackmail and decided to quit.

4. The REALLY conspiratorial one. He was pissed about the CIA being thrown under the bus about Benghazi, and told the administration that he intended to tell the truth next week at the hearings. The administration told him that they knew his little secret, and he told them to f off and quit.

I go with the simplest one.

334 And I have no clue when he had his affair. I don't care. I don't know if he is honorable or not. Sure having an affair is not honorable, but great and honorable men throughout history have had affairs.

But such an honorable guy would not go into the CIA having the affair and then, because of honor, leave the same office because of that affair. So, if he has any honor, one must assume he was clean when he went into the CIA and evidently banged the first chick who walked into his office.

Maybe it all is too weird, too much of a coincidence. Call him in front of Congress and find out.

337 Who told him to say all that shit to Congressional members? He flat out knew what happened, and he knew what was going on in Libya and why Stephens was there. Someone told him what he was to say to Congress or else. But because others in the CIA were leaking, and telling Jennifer and Catherine the truth, he got egg on his face, and when hearings were coming up he was either going to have to lie, be caught in a lie, or not.

I will also say that several others have left because of the Regime. Gates left. Not that he was a saint, but he left. Now who is left? Nothing but traitors, and our new Stasi overlords.

I also am wondering how this reshapes the CIA? The CIA has been functioning totally out of character. They are intelligence gathering, not the military, or special forces. However, they are now operating in a very, shall we say, strange manner compared to how we typically see them operating. To me it is a shift of the military being special forces to the CIA having control over that department. All of which gets us clusterfarked.

They could do the same thing had he not resigned, which is approximately nothing. Not unless he got caught in a blatant, provable lie.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. If Obama wanted to continue trying to bury the Benghazi story (and he does), the last thing he'd want is for his CIA director to resign unexpectedly.

Usually egregious cases get punished however. A four star general (five?) who is the head of the CIA is most certainly egregious, assuming it's true.

Four Star.
Yeah, adultry is usually something that you don't punish because it's a pain in the ass to prove. Better to go after them for other stuff like disobeying a lawful orderplus "conduct unbecoming" if they're an officer or "behavior detrimental" if they're enlisted.

I think he went too far when he admitted he was having the affair mainly because his wife's cooter was stretched out enough to fit a 2 liter bottle of Coke and her bunghole, though still tight, stank. The two paragraphs about just wanting a cooter that could still squeeze and/or a clean bunghole seemed a bit too detailed for my tastes.

Because you don't. You quit to spend more time with your family.

I am sure he had an affair. I am sure they made him put the reason in the letter to stop speculation about the reason for him quitting really being Benghazi

If you really want him to be quiet about Benghazi and under your thumb, firing him is NOT the way to do it.

He had an affair. They found out. They wanted to keep him quiet. Perhaps he outed the info himself to get out from under the admins thumb

I think I am giving him too much credit

I don't care if people are Eagle Scouts in their private life. I just want people who get the job done reliably, quickly, competently, on time and on budget.

I've seen some dissolute louches in the workplace whose positions were nevertheless secure. Why did their bosses keep them on? They delivered. And they led their own lives on their own time without bringing any of it to the office.

What was the comment Lincoln made about Grant when told that Grant was a drunk? Something about finding out what the General preferred and sending him a case of it.

If Petraeus's side squeeze was someone inside the Agency, that's different.

677 >>But I don't see how having an affair can hurt him in his job unless it was a security no no.

That's my point. In his position, it is ALWAYS a security no no. The point is not that you're having an affair with a spy. It's that you are doing something that you want to remain secret very, very badly. If he didn't care if his wife found out about it, he'd divorce her ass and pound away on his mistress.

When people want very badly for their secret to remain secret, they will go to great lengths to appease anyone who knows their secret. That's what makes them a security risk.

That seems implausible.

Firing Petraeus doesn't ensure his silence. . .in fact exposing the secret gives him no reason to cooperate.

KEEPING him place (with the threat of exposure blackmail if he doesn't play ball) seems like the plan if you want him to cooperate.

If this were simply Petraeus resigning over guilt, or for fear of potential blackmail, he wouldn't have wanted to. . nor had to. . specifically admit to an affair. He could have cited vague "personal reasons". The fact that he specified that he was resigning over a sexual affair has meaning here.

Petraeus retired from the U.S. Army on 31 August 2011. His retirement ceremony was held at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.[158] During this ceremony, he was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal by Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn.[159] During the ceremony, Lynn in his remarks noted that, General Petraeus has played an important role as both a combat leader and strategist in the post-9/11 world. Lynn also cited General Petraeus' efforts in current counter insurgency strategy.[160] Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in his remarks compared General Petraeus to Ulysses S. 735 If this were simply Petraeus resigning over guilt, or for fear of
potential blackmail, he wouldn't have wanted to. . nor had to. .
specifically admit to an affair. He could have cited vague "personal
reasons". The fact that he specified that he was resigning over a sexual
affair has meaning here.

It would've come out eventually whether he admitted it now or not. He might as well take his lumps all at once rather than wait for the press to uncover it later on.

You can't have the head of the CIA. . .who literally is in charge of all our nations secrets. . .be in a position where he is subject to blackmail. That's either by the person he was having the affair with, or anyone else who knew about it. Its a major potential security breach.

As mentioned WAY up thread, as one example, it used to be SOP for Soviet spies to blackmail sensitive people by luring them into sexual affairs, then threatening to expose them. In fact the Soviets literally recruited and trained special young female operatives for this specific task.

What I question here, is that Petraeus specifically cited a sexual affair as the reason for his resignation. If he were purely resigning for security reasons, he wouldn't need to heap the extra added embarrassment of specifying exactly why. He could cite 'personal reasons' or 'family concerns' or such.

The fact that he specifically mentioned an affair means that HE wants it out there on the record. One plausible reason why he might is to prevent someone ELSE from putting it out there to control the narrative and discredit him.

752 Hot Air also made an interesting point. Petraeus mentions that he was married 37 years. He got married July 6, 1974. So it is actually 38 years. If you use the 37 years, the affair occurred sometime between July 2011 and July 2012. FWIW, he retired from the Army in August 2011.

821 6 days just before his testimony. CIA has been contradicting the White House and Hillary.

My BS meter is off the scale.

Maybe, MAYBE he is having an affair but his choice of resigning and it's timing is suspect.

I believe this choice was given to him as the least negative impact for him and the country.

This just smells like a week old fish laying in the sun.

822 Who was the one person in the government with enough pull in the military to stop Obama's defacto dictatorship... David Petraeus... moved to CIA to get him out of the military... and use the affair to get him out of government... the coup was bloodless

Obama's stance on giving him the tax increase above $250k as a sign of good faith shows he is on a scorched earth policy...

Lisa,
speaking only for myself, it's not that I don't care. I am scared
shitless for my country about what the SCOAMF is going to do in the next four years.
Humor is as much a release from the pain as much as it is a defense
mechanism against the sheer insanity that I am sure this episode will prove to be a prelude to.

this is over and we have two judges ready to go.”

828 All of the above are possible.

However men will do some amazing reckless things for women.

Maybe he fell head over heels in love. Asked for a divorce. Wife of 37 years goes ballistic. He just puts the whole sordid affair out there.

One thing is for certain he was forced to admit to the affair in public. Something was keeping him from doing the personal reasons route.

Posted by: Long Island at November 09, 2012 05:07 PM (r4/6a)

829 The man apparently had a stellar military career. Makes you wonder what would cause him to just toss it away, to tarnish his reputation like this. At least you'd think he'd have gotten a publicist to have the woman come forward or something so he could make the "I made a mistake but I love my wife of 37 years speech". Would have at least made it more palatable or something.

843 Obama's search team might do well to look for a descendant of Beria, or perhaps he should check with Vlad and see what he suggests. Now that he has so much flexibility and all.

I don't know the truth of this affair and resignation but there is too much here, including the fact that MSNBC broke the story, not to be suspicious in light of Benghazi.

The D/CIA's wife works for CFPA, which was originally set up by Senator (elect) Warren. Not his mistress. I don't have time to go through hundreds of comments to see if anyone else set this straight.

His mistress is an author, probably not employed by anyone, authors are usually self-employed.

And Andrea Mitchell is the wife of the previous head of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, and probably shouldn't be a news reporter because she can't possibly be objective about financial news or the economy. Which is inevitably the core of political news.
