Obama Presser: Give Me My Tax Hikes On Those Making $250,000 Or More Right Now, Before Anything Else, As a Show of Good Faith

He just finished speaking.

I can't believe we have to listen to this guy for another four years.

I can't believe it. I really can't. I'm still processing this-- this happened.

Another four miserable, impoverished years.

Here's an idea. I don't know if this is a good idea. I imagine some will be pretty angry about it.

8 of the 10 wealthiest counties in the country voted for Obama, and thus higher taxes.

Fine.

Here's my compromise solution. Let's agree to raise taxes on income greater than, say, $600,000 per year. Or better yet-- $1,000,000 year, which is what Joe Biden claimed their policy was in a debate.

But we'll insist that investment income rates be lowered.

Why? Because Hollywood-types and other celebrities (rappers, athletes, Bruce Springsteen) make a lot in income.

They want their income taxed at higher rates? Fine. You got it.

I know a lot of "innocent" Republicans will be trapped by this. That's why I don't know if it's a good idea. But it seems likely to me we will lose (Obama doesn't mind if he crashes the US economy by taking us over the cliff; he'll get a poll boost out of it).

So punish those who voted for this. It's what they wanted; give it to them.

And also change the rules of charitable deductions that things that celebrities donate -- their old shoes (for auction), their appearance at a gala -- cannot be counted as actual charitable deductions for tax purposes. Only cash counts, baby. So Kathy Griffin (or whoever) can't just keep reducing her taxes by occasionally showing up for an hour at an AIDS benefit.

Let us work assiduously to make sure they pay their "fair share." Vindictively, even.

And I would like to add that Democrats have a super-majority in both houses in California. They have already started talking about an oil severance tax, removal of tax breaks on enterprise zones, raising taxes on commercial real estate and last but not least, either doing away with Proposition 13 or working around it to raise property taxes.

I would also like to state that Governor Moonbeam told the voters that if they voted for the tax hike in Proposition 30, tuition wouldn't have to go up in both the UC and CSU university systems. Yesterday evening, the Cal State University system came out and said they were raising tuition anyways.

And now in Los Angeles, both Councilman Herb Wesson and LAPD Chief Beck are asking that a sales tax increase be placed on the ballot for March 2013, or they will have to fire cops.

READER PAUL FONTAINE WRITES:

Glenn, I’ve been thinking about this. I’m a libertarian who mainly votes Republican because fiscal conservatism comes first and freedom, to me, means more than just the freedom to f*ck who I want and kill fetuses.

Anyway, I just read this article: Obama Wins 8 of 10 Wealthiest Counties in US.

And I’m saying to myself, why am I going to war for these people? All this effort to try to protect the “job creators” and they’re voting for Obama and ever larger government and more taxes. I think it’s time to give them what they want! I would love to see a Republican bring forth a bill to tax the sh*t out of those making over $500k (the 1%). These are the people who live in these enclaves. Let’s do comprehensive tax reform, eliminate most or all deductions and lower rates for everyone…except them. Let their rates go back to the Clinton era rates AND eliminate their deductions. This goes hand in hand with your “eliminate the Hollywood Tax Cuts” proposal. Now granted, this would not do a whole lot to address the budget deficit. Anyone who is good at math knows that. However, it completely cuts the legs out from the Democrats, gives these rich jerks their just desserts for voting for Obama and supporting him financially, and will help insulate the married working professionals who Obama and the Dems REALLY want to soak. You can even defend it in public to your base by telling them “Look at the stats, these people vote in DROVES for Obama. They want this. They deserve this”. Once you’ve passed this bill to raise taxes on these liberal elite, when the Dems come back to try to get the rest of us, they will no longer be able to demonize R’s for protecting “the rich”. The Republicans are now protecting working families who are just trying to finance their own retirements, their kids’ college educations and pay their mortgages. They could KILL the Dems in ads and they would have nothing to fall back on. Am I crazy? I think this is the way to go.

You get social security, take out the same taxes you take out of my paycheck. You get food stamps, take out the same taxes you take out of my paycheck. Simple. Fair.

And stop supporting corporations. Make them pay their fair share, period. If they leave they leave. Really how many new people can they fire? They're so lean most humans are only in management now.

He wants to tax struggling families to death and allow corporations to make ridiculous profits? The voters think the Republicans are in the pocket of corporate America, no way, it's the democrats who have allowed corporate America to make the most embarrassing profits while regular Americans have had to go on food stamps and have lost their homes. But Romney never brought up anything controversial.

83 Economic illiterates like Obama forget that for many, income is fungible.

If I'm earning anywhere between $230 and $350k, and some retard in Washington says that my already 42% marginal tax rate isn't high enough, and its "not fair' that my taxes are so low, then enacts some increased rate, do you know what's going to happen?

Suddenly, and for no external reason, I'm not going to make over $250k anymore. My pre-tax expenses will mysteriously go up all of a sudden. I'll sock away more money into deferred compensation. I'll take more vacation time. Etc.

In addition to making those with incomes over 600,000 pay more we also need to:

2. Revoke all Hollywood tax credits.

106 Romney got the highest % of white voters ever, higher than Reagan. Minorities voted in overwhelming numbers for Obama, and because of the demographic change, it wasn't enough to overcome them. Democrats have been trying to breed out white people for decades and they've almost succeeded.

Fuck Amnesty, and fuck pandering to the blacks, they have been brainwashed by the media, and schooling system to hate whitey. The democrats have openly become the party of minorities, and play up racial politics to devastating effect. The racism card is powerful, and It's time for the GOP to start using it. They already think we're the "White people party" so why not just own it and start pandering to white people problems?

The Top trending thing on twitter after the election was #fuckwhitepeople. If the GOP could win 70-80% of the white vote we would never lose an election. That sounds much easier to me than trying to appease a bunch of racists who want free shit.

And, just to make it even better, I am going to call it the "Funding and Financial Security of Public Broadcasting Act of 2013". Yup, part of the proceeds from the tax will go to fund PBS. The electorate spoke....they want Big Bird. Who better to pay for it than the people profiting from our airwaves. Comcast, Disney, etc. are all big corporations.....they can afford it. The problem isn't assets, the problem is "earned income tax". The rich don't have that much "earned income". They need to have a special rich tax bracket for ALL sources of income.

235 You are wrong Ace.

You are buying into their thinking which is "lets make someone do something by legislation"

But that doesn't work.

The problem with tax hikes on the rich is that rich people are better at keeping their money than the government is at taking it. That is why they are rich. They hire tax lawyers to craft tax-avoidance strategies. They move wealth offshore. They hang around with politically powerful people who write the tax laws. They know how to work the system.

So the government doesn't get the money it wants from the rich. So where does it go? To the middle class, which has a lot of money (because there are a lot of them), and who are not as good at keeping it.

So my advice:

1) Get smart, fast, on financial issues. Find a good accountant who can tell you how to legally lower your tax bill. Read up on tax-deferred investments, offshoring, precious metals, property tax reduction, and the like With a little work you can avoid a surprising amount of the tax hike coming down the bend.

2) Figure out healthcare for you and your family. There will be winners and losers with Obamacare, and your job is to be a winner.

3) Network.

4) This one is for you, Ace. There will be a large demand for forums and knowledge portals that deal with this sort of stuff. You will do us -- and yourself -- a service if you can include more info on these subjects.

2) An immediate four year moratoreum on all immigration to the U.S. We have over 23 million unemployed and under employedhere in the U.S. We must stop new immigrants coming in for a period of time to get each and every ablebodied American citizen working... jobs for Americans!!...so that we can shore up the Social Security and Medicare systems.

3) If we don't do these two things... the Social Security and Medicare systems will go bankrupt, collapse and Social Securiy checks and Medicare payments will no longer be made.

That is our choice. There is no other way to shore up Social Security and Medicare.
Repeat ad nauseum. Repeat ad nauseum. Repeat ad nauseum

I realize of course that SS and Medicare probably will go bankrupt eventually anyway.... I just want all ablebodied men and women off of welfare and working. Don't care what color, creed or religion they are.... get off your lazy asses and get a f*cking job. Skin in the game baby.

239 I'd refuse to enact "partial fixes", make Obama submit his entire proposal (which, of course, would take until December the-last-day-before-recess).

Then, get ALL Republicans to vote "present", pin it on all Dem votes, and apologize because there simply was no time left for debate and modification.

Couldn't agree with any of it, but we didn't have the luxury of time to discuss it.

-Push your representative to repeal the federal exemption for state and local taxes

- press your state legislature to make a minimum retirement age to 65

Crash the system, Ace? Let it burn! Yeah, I can go along with that.
The reasons I can go along with that, are:
1.) It's inevitable. Has been for some time, now. It's all gonna crash and burn, anyway. Yeah, I know. Math is hard...but math doesn't care whatanyone thinks. Whether it starts with the economic collapse in Greece or a wide-spread -possibly nuclear-war in the Middle East and/or Southwest Asia, or if China and Japan can't get over arguing who owns whichdeserted islandlocated in the South China Sea. It's all gonna crash and burn, anyway.
2.) No one, and I do mean no one, is really interested in fixing the system and returning our nation to constitutional principles, politically, economically, morally or any other way. Mostly, they (including most conservatives)just want to kick the other pigs out of the trough so that they can fill their own bellies.
3.) Even if you did do #2.) above, the system, as we know it, would crash and burn, anyway. From highways to power to sewage treatment to zoning laws to you name itwe're all too dependent on big government. Remove big government and return to a constitutionally limitedgovernment and it all collapses. Life, as we know it, would not be the same.

Posted by: wth at November 09, 2012 02:10 PM (wAQA5)

269 1. Revoke the non-profit status of any organization with more than $1 million in assets. What do we need all these charities for when we have the benevolent government looking after everything. Understood in this light, every single non-profit organization is nothing more than a tax-dodge for the rich.

2. Tax the endowments of any higher ed with an endowment of more than $1 million (see also #1). Why should a bastion of the 1% like Harvard be able to hoard billions tax free? Shared sacrifice, baby.

3. Eliminate deductions for charitable contributions. Period. Full stop. Dumping a few hundred grand into the endowment of your Ivy League alma mater is fine. Just don't expect to write it off.

4. 75% punitive tax on the rich. You voted. We heard you. Now pay up suckers. And don't go thinking you'll just endow some foundation to get around it (see #1). Since all that might create some hardship on the middle class folks. New tax rates:

< $250,000 = 0%
$250,000 - $1,000,000 = 45%
>$1,000,000 =75%

Keep in mind no deductions. Everybody is on the short form now.

This won't work because there is not as much money there as Democrats imagine but what the hell? The rich voted for this guy so this must be what they want. Meantime, I'll enjoy not paying any taxes for the next few years.

Finally, do away with digital copyright. This is Hollywood's love-child with the Holder. These folks think they are not paying enough but at the same time they demand the right to throw a single mother in jail because she downloads pirated music or movies. Uh-uh. Not in my America you don't. Digital files may be freely copied and transferred. What's it to us anyway? All that money just goes the Democrats wealthiest backers. We've been a cheap date for way too long on this issue. From now on all true libertarians, conservatives, and Republicans are pro file trading.

50% of college grads cannot find jobs, yet many voted for The Won II.

They own this.

Nearly half of Catholics voted for this in spite of their leaders admonishing them not to vote for Obamacare. Half of this denomination goes through the motions and considers themselves religious. I could not look in the mirror. This includes some of my family members who have, apparently, abandoned us when not provoking. You see: we make more money than they do. We are "wealthy" evil Republicans. That is what this is all about in the culture wars: envy.

Could have this stat wrong, but 66% of Jews voted for this.

They all own it.

I am from generations of French Huguenots, who fled Portiers, France during the Reformation. Fled to Scotland and bred with Celts (clan: MacDonald). Kings killed them for wanting Bibles in their language. They then fled to America, and some died in the American Revolution. Some died in the Civil War. Some died in World Wars One and Two. Some die now in Afghanistan and Iraq. I will not forget them and just stay home and whine, or put my head in the sand.

As some have said, let it all burn to the ground. Let the blame rest squarely on them. Get ready, it is going to get very ugly. And I am so sorry for the good people who are going to suffer much more than me...I am praying for you. God is stronger than all of this.

History shows things have to get really, really bad before people revolt against tyranny. My shield is God. My weapons are protest and my vote (which may or may not be counted, depending on conspiracy charges of computer hacking). In times of severe crisis and threat (see: 9/11), people turn to God. Do you see a wave of change coming? I do.

I have yet to hear a complete speech by Barky. Unfortunately I have to pretend, for another four years, that he only exists in the periphery of my vision. I can still hope he trips and plants his face down the steps of Marine One. I can still hope his mole grows with each lie and betrayal of Americans. Thank goodness for mute buttons and my Pavlov's Dog quick-action remote.

Not try to weaken red states with giving citizenship to15 million Anti republicans voters.

The republicans have to make them suffer for putting their liberal culture over the fiscual stability of America...Democrats want to tax them tax them... Why are republicans protecting them... They live in cities that 250,000 anit' rich... The upper west side, donors to democrats along with Hollywood, so Obama goes afte oil . Why aren't republicans going after Hollywood tax shelters.

The problem with republicans we have stupid people like McCain on one side wants the US money and even personal in the middle of every civil war, and other on the end who are protecting big busniess all the big busniess that are tech who fund democrats a media democrat donors....and when democrats throw one false argument, like taxing oil... Republicans should counter with how about Hollwood , who don't even do a movie in a state besides most outside the country unless they get tax benefits, or all the other tax loop holes.

We should have had a candaite who was more anti war. Which Romney should have done.Who crictized Obama failed polices in Afganstan and Lybia.. Who talked daily about the failed surge , the 1300 deaths under Obama....that's why Clint's speech was the one high light, he mocked Obama about Afganstan ..... why democrats needed to destroy him later...When he said ( mock speaking to Obama). you thought AFGHANISTAN was a good idea , I guess Russsia's decade there didn't mean anything to you.

We have a party that pretends the public is smarter then it is.... And these social conservatives... With I' m against abortion if women are raped., that's a not a policy,,,so why push it.
That's what destroed Romney of any chance of winning, I knew Obama was going to win when I saw the last PEW poll. They have been right for the last 4 decades, and no Carter was 4 % down from Reagan ,. PEW last poll had a 6 + democrat

But what is worth remembering, for fucking conservatives is after the 2 nd debate still after the third debate the gap between women voters disappeared, 11% and the media and liberals started to panic, and punshed the blinders bullshit..

And the debate were Romney was aggressive, in the first 20 minutes was his best with women voters.

the blinders crap wash't working what worked was the fool Mourdock comments... And Pew last poll the women cap back to 11%....

304 Listen, everybody! Nothing will change until MSM changes and stops their biased reporting. We all must do some brainstorming as to how we can make it painful for the MSM. There doesn't seem to be any united efffort yet so talk of boycotting them doesn't seem to work. The key to doing this is to have Republicans in Congress get on the offensive and quit waiting 2-3 weeks before responding to MSM negative reporting or nonreporting. To me, the Republicans always whimp out and don't get in reporters faces and demand the truth. For instance, with Benghazi, why didin't a large group of Republicans demand to go on TV and demand the truth be oute? Evryone talks about Romney not getting his message out. Everyone's so polite, except for BHO and Democrats. They all go on TV with same lies but same messages. Nothing will change until MSM feet held to fire!.

Big entertainment stars aren't paid as individuals. They form companies, the producer pays the company, the company pays the star a small portion of his "fee" in income and uses the rest to "run" the company, i.e., pay the entourage, buy "supplies", invest, etc. You don't make that much money without knowing somebody smart enough to tell you to get a good lawyer to deal with it.
Why not just tax Hollywood's "windfall" profits -90% of any box office receipts over $100M. Or better yet, tax movie and television revenue, not profits, just like Obamacare taxes medical device makers. You can't tell me medical devices are less important than sitcoms and chickflix.

323 Well, I'm way late to the party and nobody will ever read this, but:

I don't think Romney, Mia Love, and the other high-polling R's lost because people didn't vote. I think there was widespread vote fraud. (Remember, in Al Franken's case they kept finding "misplaced" boxes of ballots in various car trunks. I'll betcha it's just as easy to "disappear" boxes of ballots, too.) And for sure with electronic voting, it'd be simple to write a little subroutine that that said "IF vote is for Romney, IF counter =8, THEN change vote to Obama and reset counter to 1". Bang! 12% of Romney votes get allocated to Obama.

I assume that proving vote fraud would be next to impossible given the current state of affairs (ie, the party engaging in vote-tampering is the party in power). (*) Unfortunately, electronic voting doesn't leave a paper trail that can be grabbed and re-counted. And electronic records have nothing like "hanging chads" or other "indicators of intent". Once something in a database is changed, there's no way to know what the prior information in that record was. Computerized-everything makes Winston Smith's job REALLY EASY, now that we're in 2012 and not 1984. (Remember that Stalin remarked that it's not the votes, it's WHO COUNTS THE VOTES that matters.)

So, anyway, if we're going to renew our Republic, our first goal HAS to be to restore integrity to the voting system. Screw "efficiency". (The Nazis were real efficient, too, you know, but look how that turned out.) We HAVE to use paper ballots, which can be warehoused, physically retrieved and recounted by a different set of hands-and-eyes. And we NEED to do the Iraq purple-finger thing, so that any given individual, no matter how many sets of "official documents" he has, can vote only once.

= = = = = =
(*) The only thing I can think of, this time around, (and it's really way-out-there, requiring hundreds-of-thousands of people who believe they were disenfranchised to get off their butts and actually DO something besides complain to their friends or fellow-bloggers) would be :

Send a letter to your Secretary of State, declaring that you have NO FAITH in the election results as reported and certified by the S-o-S office. You would have to violate your own voter confidentiality and state on-paper who you voted for, more-or-less in the format "I believe I have been disenfranchised. I am willing to testify under oath that I voted for the Mitt Romney/ Paul Ryan ticket, and I believe my vote WAS NOT COUNTED." You would also have to include your full (as-registered) voter name, plus your residence address, so that your particular district and precinct could be established. (And it might be a good idea to send a cc: to some third party, such as the GOP, who could track how many complaints were being brought forward in which states. Another thought would be your local consumer-protection advocate.)

IF there are significant numbers of protest letters sent, The Powers That Be will be forced to address the issue. As I said, it's a long shot, and would require everybody --that means YOU READING THIS, y'know-- to look up the address of your S-o-S and actually compose and print the letter and buy the stamp to mail it in.

If you feel this election was stolen, if you feel your government no longer represents you, if you are afraid that there is NOWHERE for a conservative to turn to be heard - if you're mad-as-hell and not-gonna-take-it any more -
WRITE THE LETTER.

MAKE THEM KNOW WE WON'T SIT STILL AND BE GOOD PROLES.
Or, be a sheep and let the wolves vote what to have for dinner.

324 Errr, ahhhh not fer nutin', but Joisey had 3 o' them richest counties......Hunterdon, Morris & Somerset.
HuntCo is rural, with a multitude of 18th century homes(we restored 3 in southern HuntCo) and believe it or not a fiercely independent, self reliant people.....farmers and financiers alike. A bastion of the old America where equality ruled the coffee spot at the Ringoes deli, or the Seargentsville fireman's fair.
Morris is also rural, and Morristown is kinda lefty but the rest is a lot like HuntCo.
ONLY Somerset went for O. And the wealthy are far outnumbered there by the populations of New Brunswick and the adjacent Brunwicks & environs.
DO NOT lump all the NJ's folks who have worked hard-thru generations; we were working with Dad rehabbing inner city housing in the 70's before my brother and I were 10-with the massive population we have that is as addicted to Gub'mint money as is Chris Christie-who was NEVER conservative enough for me.

325 Spot on. I've been thinking exactly the same thing. Step aside, say that we didn't originate this plan, but since the President says it will solve our deficit problems, abstain and let the Democrats pass it. Since the wealthy are all voting lib, let's see them put their money where their mouths are. You could exempt all small business owners who earn their income from a small business and employ at least 20 employees, but otherwise, simply step aside and let them "lead.". Since taxing the wealthy won't solve any of our deficit problems, the liberal demagoguery will be fully exposed.

329 The "compromise" they should come up with is to raise taxes on incomes above 400,000, but with an exception for income derived from S-corps or LLC's that employ a certain number of people. Exact details and levels can be worked out, but they can do it in a way that doesn't hit business owners who employ people and let it fall on all those people in the rich Obama counties, movie stars, etc. In short, people with high incomes who don't employ anyone.

Posted by: jukin at November 10, 2012 02:32 PM (WGm5T)

331 This is really late, and it's not going to be read, but I'm going to say it anyway.

According to the Census Bureau, in 2011, there were about 2,808,000 households making $250,000 or more. The problem is, they weren't exactly making seven figures per: the average income of those households was $426,271. So the aggregate income of the $250,000 and up bracket comes to about 1,196,968,968,000 dollars. But in 2011, the federal government spent 3.63 trillion dollars. They literally could have taxed the $250,000+ bracket at 100% and still run out of money by Cinco de Mayo.

What about the $200,000 bracket? Well, that was 2,297,000 households averaging $220,171, for an aggregate of 505,732,787,000. So, if we taxed $200,000 and up at 100%, we'd be at 1,702,701,755,000. That's 1.7 trillion, and we're not even halfway there.

Next bracket down is $195,000, of which there were 312,000 households averaging $197,150. That works out to 61,510,800,000. That brings us to 1,764,212,555,000 in revenue, if we assume 100% taxation of $195,000 and up. We're still not even halfway there.

Now let's add in the $190,000 bracket, and since I see this is going to be a while, I'm going to get a lot less chatty. Households: 380,000; Average income: 191,948; Bracket total: 72,940,240,000; Grand total: 1,837,152,795,000. All right, we're halfway there.

$185,000 bracket. Households: 363,000; Average income: 186,981; Bracket total: 67,874,103,000; Grand total: 1,905,026,898,000. (1.9 trillion, we're still trying to get to 3.63.)

$180,000 bracket: 460,000 households averaging 182,096. Bracket total: 83,764,160,000; Grand total: 1,988,791,058,000.

$175,000 bracket: 530,000 households averaging 177,007. Bracket total: 93,813,710,000. Grand total: 2,082,604,768,000. (Yay, we're finally over 2 trillion! Only a trillion and a half or so to go...)

$170,000 bracket: 617,000 households averaging 172,017. Bracket total: 106,134,489,000. Grand total: 2,188,739,257,000. Remember, we are taxing all of these households at ONE HUNDRED PERCENT to get this much revenue.

$165,000 bracket: 610,000 households averaging 167,143. Bracket total: 101,957,230,000. Grand total: 2,290,696,487,000.

$160,000 bracket: 697,000 households averaging 162,013. Bracket total: 112,923,061,000. Grand total: 2,403,619,548,000.

$155,000 bracket: 740,000 households averaging 157,104. Bracket: 116,256,960,000. Grand: 2,519,876,508,000.

$150,000 bracket: 1,166,000 households at 151,719. Bracket: 176,904,354,000; Grand: 2,696,780,862,000. Less than a trillion to go!

$145,000 bracket: 893,000 households at 147,037. Bracket: 131,304,041,000. Grand: 2,828,084,903,000.

$140,000 bracket: 1,031,000 households at 142,077. Bracket: 146,481,387,000. Grand: 2,974,566,290,000.

$135,000 bracket: 918,000 households at 136,911. Bracket: 125,684,298,000. Grand: 3,100,250,588,000.

$130,000 bracket: 1,211,000 households at 132,091. Bracket: 159,962,201,000. Grand: 3,260,212,789,000.

$125,000 bracket: 1,258,000 households at 127,046. Bracket: 159,823,868,000. Grand: 3,420,036,657,000.

$120,000 bracket: 1,540,000 households at 121,936. Bracket: 187,781,440,000. Grand: 3,607,818,097,000.

The $115,000 bracket puts that way over 3.63 trillion dollars. And you have to assume there may be some higher numbers in there somewhere, so let's just stop the addition at the $120,000 bracket.

Now, for those of you whose eyes have glazed over at all the numbers...

HEY!!!!!

SNAP OUT OF IT!!!!

Now, then, what was all that math about, again? That was to show how much aggregate income those brackets made, and what it would have taken to balance the 2011 budget from a strictly soak-the-rich stance. It would have taken a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT TAX on all incomes over $120,000.

We cannot tax our way out of this. It is impossible. That's not ideology, that's math.
