Kaus: Republicans Now Rushing To Amnesty Camp

Here's the problem: Hispanics are sort of in favor of amnesty.

But that's not why they vote Democratic. They vote Democratic because... they're Democrats.

So we're making a play for a very Democratic voting bloc by promising to make more Democrats.

An article I can't find at the moment (found it-- it's from a blog no one reads) noted that Hispanics say in polls they are broadly in favor of big government with more spending and more programs. I think they are more in favor of that than amnesty.

Not sure what amnesty gets us. One of the basic problems here is that pro-amnesty people brag that George W. Bush, who pushed amnesty, got 40% of the Hispanic vote.

40%. So he only lost it by 20%.

So every million Hispanics that vote, the GOP loses 200,000 votes. And that's Best Case Scenario. I don't see what amnesty does except increase the number of Hispanic voters who will vote against us.

Via Hot Air, this article by Heather Mac Donald rubbishes the "natural Republican constituency" hooey:

A March 2011 poll by Moore Information found that Republican economic policies were a stronger turn-off for Hispanic voters in California than Republican positions on illegal immigration. Twenty-nine percent of Hispanic voters were suspicious of the Republican party on class-warfare grounds — “it favors only the rich”; “Republicans are selfish and out for themselves”; “Republicans don’t represent the average person”– compared with 7 percent who objected to Republican immigration stances.

...

And a strong reason for that support for big government is that so many Hispanics use government programs. U.S.-born Hispanic households in California use welfare programs at twice the rate of native-born non-Hispanic households. And that is because nearly one-quarter of all Hispanics are poor in California, compared to a little over one-tenth of non-Hispanics. Nearly seven in ten poor children in the state are Hispanic, and one in three Hispanic children is poor, compared to less than one in six non-Hispanic children....

The idea of the “social issues” Hispanic voter is also a mirage. A majority of Hispanics now support gay marriage, a Pew Research Center poll from last month found. The Hispanic out-of-wedlock birth rate is 53 percent, about twice that of whites.

The demographic changes set into motion by official and de facto immigration policy favoring low-skilled over high-skilled immigrants mean that a Republican party that purports to stand for small government and free markets faces an uncertain future.

And Now Cubans, Too: Cubans voted 49% for Obama in Florida. The one segment of the Hispanic vote that used to vote Republican is now moving strongly to join the Obama's Racial Coalition.

Ha Ha Ha Ha: Drew just emailed me to say the "more in favor of big government" statistic I wrote about came from a blog no one ever reads.

Seriously… Medicare/Medicaid , Social Security, Obamacare… all of it. Unsustainable but the law of the land and completely entrenched. So let it all collapse.

The Middle East can burn and all of the Oil-ticks can starve in their godforsaken desert.

Israel will be fine. They don’t need out money or our weapons. Obama was a hater and the New York and Florida Jewish population STILL went for him. Oh well.

Let China attack Taiwan , it will keep them occupied for years and years to come so they will be hard pressed to maintain the rest of their global mischief.

Pull out of Afghanistan. They do not deserve one more penny or one more drop of our blood. I would'nt waste a good piss on them.

Pakistan can rot. I would encourage a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. It would keep them bottled up as well ( as well as out “friends” Russia and China). The whole of Asia could fall into the sea and I would not weep a single tear.

This is still basically the freest nation on Earth. Voters from other nations are pretty much always going to make our country more like theirs. And while I enjoy tacos and hot Scandi dames, I don't want people who vote for corrupt Latin American politicians and Scandi social welfare programs bringing that part of their culture here.

I'm not completely opposed to immigration, but it's insane to allow any more Swedes or Mexicans to come into this country than necessary, unless you want this country's public policy to look like that of Sweden or Mexico.

And were Obama's policies (or the perceptions of them) more popular, or did he have a far better turn-out machine? If it was 60/40, there would be a good argument for both. At 50/48, it's tough to make both arguments simultaneously, although that doesn't seem to be stopping anybody. 94 Fuck it, let them have their fucking amnesty. Then let the country barrel even faster towards a fiscal meltdown under the weight of unrepayable debt. After that their won't be one thin fucking dime for the government services they and their fellow democrats want.

As (I think it was) Drew said here the other day, there is no electoral solution to the debt crisis. We just have to let it crash; i.e. we are at the point where we have to destroy the village to save it. Only when people see the real life, terrifying consequences of their actions is their any possibility they will learn and only then can we start rebuilding.

In the mean time, we can continue to warn people it's coming. They won't listen now, but when the crash hits, they'll remember - and wish they had.

96 What is wrong with Republicans that they can't say, "Hey, we'll talk about that issue after we talk about this other one. If you try to combine the two, or talk about them out of order, negotiations are done."

Just leave the question of amnesty out of it. Say, "Border enforcement first. We'll discuss what to do with those who are already here after we've figured out a way to secure our own border."

As many have pointed out in the past, this is every bit as much a National Security issue as it is an immigration issue.

97 Enough with this madness about how the GOP will benefit from amnesty, look at California the GOP used to own California

Presidential Voting History for California

1968 - GOP
1972 - GOP
1976 - GOP
1980 - GOP
1984 - GOP
1986 - Simpson/Boles Amnesty Act Passes
1988 - GOP
1992 - DEM
1996 - DEM
2000 - DEM
2004 - DEM
2008 - DEM
2012 - DEM

California
is now entirely Democrat and will never be a GOP state because of
massive unchecked illegal immigration from the shit hole that is Mexico

This
is the fate that awaits the country if we are stupid enough to commit
suicide but seeing as we have fucking idiots in leadership positions and
within the ranks of the moron horde this seems the likely outcome.

99 "Hector" has been making an ass of himself for several days with assertions such as the one that conservatives just want to shove all Hispanics into gas chambers. (Yep. Said that.)

Here's the actual reality. What the studies overwhelmingly show about immigration is that HIGH-SKILLED IMMIGRANTS are an ECONOMIC POSITIVE. They are a net benefit to the society in which they arrive. They on average pay more in taxes than they receive in services. They have strong productivity.

Whereas, by contrast, LOW-SKILLED IMMIGRANTS are an ECONOMIC NEGATIVE. They are a net drain on the society in which they arrive. They on average pay less in taxes than they receive in services. They have weak productivity.

This has nothing to do with race. It has nothing to do with culture. And it works that way in all countries.

A white low-skilled immigrant is just as bad for America as is a brown low-skilled immigrant.

Or,

A brown low-skilled immigrant is just as bad for Australia as is a white low-skilled immigrant.

Other societies that used to have large amounts of low-skilled immigrants coming in have figured out that doing so is a mug's game. And they have had to stop playing that game. They have gone to points-based systems where you get most of your points based on having useful skills that will let you produce new wealth instead of consuming the host society's existing wealth.

The fundamental problem with Hispanic immigrants is that they have low skills. I'm happy to let in as many Hispanics with engineering and medical degrees as we can find. There just aren't very many. Instead we are getting tens of millions of people who often can't even read and write. Not even in their own language.

I agree, it's a silly fantasy to think that amnesty will benefit Republicans. But we do need a humane solution. I don't know what, exactly, which is the problem.

What sucks is the Hispanics who are most likely to vote GOP would also be those against amnesty, from what I've heard.

Of course, the media gives a platform to Hispanics shilling for amnesty most loudly, though. Even if that is the majority opinion in the Hispanic population, it's not monolithic. Ask those who, for example, went through the legal citizenship process what they think of amnesty.

If we're ever going to have a home of liberty again, immigration is one thing we can't give up on.

This is not a comprehensive list, but here are some reasons for this:

1) National Sovereignty- a country that does not control its own borders is not a country.

2) Cultural Homogeneity- as long as the US insisted on assimilation (more or less) we were fine. It wasn't until we became "a mixing bowl" instead of "a melting pot" that things really started going off the rails. Open borders and amnesty would ruin any chance of a homogenous culture- which means the North American Continent because the new Balkans.

3) Re-Conquista- this is a stated goal of groups like (and including) La Raza. When the US collapses, they'll move in to reintegrate us with Mexico (at least the South West). There's no reason to give them a leg up on that.

241 It's all done. The Hispanic population will continue to grow at a far greater rate than native born whites. They will swamp us at the ballot box, ESPECIALLY when they get amnesty and are eligible to vote. Their higher out-of-wedlock birth rate means they will be accessing social welfare programs at an incredible rate. They will never vote for a party who pledges to scale that back. They claim it is "racist" to support reigning in welfare programs. Ironically Reagan was part of this sell-out with his 1986 amnesty program. That only encouraged even more illegals to come. I get it that no one believes in seccession because it worked so well last time. How about a peaceful seccession this time? Get your states to stand up to the Federal government the way Arizona did. The Feds are running out of money and power. They won't be able to fight back soon.

That was me yesterday and it was great. Today I think the fucking world has lost its mind, although not really because there are plenty of shellshocked, pissed off people, so I'm mad that a group of idiots are causing destruction not only through Obama but through the GOP's inane over-reaction.

I'm not even sure who the idiots are. Not convinced yet the election wasn't stolen through fraud, in which case I'm mad at the fraudsters and Romney and the GOP for not insisting on a thorough review of voting data and irregularities. If it was people who sat out (which I just can't believe yet), I'm mad at them. I need to know who to be mad at, aside from Obama and O voters which is a given.

My secret dream? There was massive fraud, someone in a position to find out discovers it, there's an investigation, Obama is canned and Romney is sworn in come January. Pipe dream, but I'll feel better once I'm convinced there is no possibility the commies stole the election.

I liked yesterday better. And that day started the possibility someone was trying to break into my house while I was in the shower.

255 I'm starting to think THIS is more about Obama than Democrats in general. We'll have to see in 2014 and perhaps 2016. Unless the Democrats can find another "Obama", it will be interesting to see how the dynamics will work with a 'white' democrat vs. a 'white' republican. or a 'hispanic' republican, 'female' republican, 'other' republican, etc, etc. We have a deep bench in all of those demographics IMHO, and all I see on the democrat side are Hillary, Biden, maybe Cuomo. Anyone have anyone else they think the democrats can bring to bear in 2016?

Of course, we'll just have to see what the damage is by then and if there is anything worth salvaging. I think we can limit the damage to a great extent if the House grows some balls. (I know, wishful thinking).

We'll be lucky if it ever gets as good as it was in the 1930s.

Note bene: amnesty, legitimizing a large block of permanent, Dem-voting takers, will do nothing except guarantee the inability of the GOP to win a national election for the next eighty years. Period. This is inarguable.

Trying to compete by sacrificing our core principles in order to pander to numbers wins nothing; even if we were to win an election that way, we get NOTHING. The Dems have realized that ( A ) giving away loads of free stuff and ( B ) conduction massive voting irregularities adds up to a winning strategy. The only way to restore America by political means is to take away from Washington its ability to give away free stuff. Defund and defang the Federal government.

That will not happen by political means. When the majority of voters is now comprised of takers who have the ability to vote for more free stuff, paid for by the productive class, we cannot win an election. The new majority will not surrender its right to free stuff just because we tell them the system will collapse otherwise - not until after it actually happens.

The only solution is to withhold. Let the system crash and burn. Let Cloward-Piven run its course. When the EBT cards run dry and there's no one left to refill them, the panic will start. We have to insulate our wallets from them - minimize what they can tax away from us. Whatever you want to call it - going Galt, making less, the gray market, letting it burn - is the only way this ever gets fixed. If that means civil disobedience, or the fourth box, or secession, we're exactly where this country was in 1773, only this time, it's not George III and the redcoats we're facing; it's Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen. It's our own, internal, mooching and looting new majority, enabled by an illegitimate and corrupt governing class.

292 1) The GOP will get absolutely no credit for this. The Democrats, the party of the Klan and Jim Crow, opposed any notion of the Civil Rights Act until they had all the power and could claim all the credit. Now they have a fiercely loyal 80-90% voting bloc.

2) This could very well be the final catalyst for a serious and motivated third party movement. I tend to shrug at the 'eff the GOP Establishment' rhetoric, but if they do something this colossally stupid that a majority of their base opposes, then I can't see this not happening.

We lost by 1%...sure, let's completely kill the party once and for all.

It's almost impossible to reach them. The few that escape become just like everyone else, some are republicans some are democrats. The ones on the plantation which are the vast majority vote for democrats. You aren't going to win them over by getting into a bidding war with democrats.

srsly, If you don't accept the knowledge we are falling over the cliff, That stuff really is free why wouldn't anyone?

The govt has instructed the population that recieving free stuff is decent and good , and if it;s not really free only rich will be hurt , or those that make a dollar more n hour then they do , or in fact might make 20 k less thna they do , but who cares., who cares it's free.

we know that business hires illegals , pays them barely substantive wages, and pass's on the housing , healthcare, section 8 and food stamps to american taxpayers. so they can actually survive.

if we were to look at amnesty srsly, if illegals from everywhere and anywhere have started famlies here, why aren't THEY coming with a proposition as a group that makes sense for the host country?

what about fidelty to america only? what about legal/documented promise to not be on the dole and self provide as immigrants before them have?

325 >>>he Hispanics I see every day are indeed hard-working, family-oriented, and either Catholic or Evangelical.

Yes and they are also poor (as a group, obviously; no, I don't think every Hispanic is poor). Poor people tend to vote Democratic -- the only group of downscale people who vote Republican are whites, and even they have joined the Obama Train.

So we're going to increase the share of poor people who need government assistance? At a moment when the government is going bankrupt from its current promises?

If we mass-amnesty Hispanics, should we mass-amnesty Chinese? Asian Americans also vote against us, and they also would like come to America.

Which of the world's poor should we not make into citizens with full claim to the generous (and bankrupting) social safety net?

327 But we cannot be the anti-Hispanic party. This is how they see us.

And how do you suggest that change? Because, you see, despite what you and Hector seem to believe, we're not the anti-Hsipanic party. We're the anti-illegal immigration party.

To conflate the two is to subscribe to the same school of thought that says, since there are a "disproportionate" number of poor, urban blacks who are convicted of crimes, and Republicans are the anti-criminal party, that Republicans are anti-black.

Neither is true. We are against people breaking the law. It's hardly our fault that the people most seen (whether or not they're actually the ones who do it the most) as braking the law are poor, urban blacks and (on immigration) Hispanics.

Now the fact is that I agree- we have to change that perception. But how do we do that without ceasing to be the anti-illegal immigration, and anti-crime parties?

343 The amnesty issue is not about Dem voters or GOP voters, it's about national sovereignty and the Rule of Law. FFS sake, it's not as if illegals don't already have citizenship. They all do ... in another friggin nation!

It looks like the whole notion of the modern nation-state is being taken apart (with the retards in the GOP joining - once again, as they did when they first killed the GOP in 2006-2008 and brought Barky on) and people are arguing about future voters. This has nothing to do with votes. Shit, you can just about forget voting anymore, especially as the Executive can do anything he wants on a whim with total impunity.

If there is not a secession and the forming of a new America this will get uglier than anyone can imagine. And, in the end, there won't be anything left. This is what happens when the third world gets control. It shows us all why it has always been the third world.

346 They should approve amnesty. Then the people that hire them will have to pay above minimum wage, SS, medicare, all that stuff. They lose their competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Then if a huge segment of them end up on public assistance, well now the state labor unions and teacher unions are going to start having to worry about how much is going to be spent on wellfare vs union wages. Sure they raise taxes in the states, but there's just not enough money to go around.

We need to start dismantling the Democratic coalition. There's a big to do about SoCons vs. FiCons, wait till it's union vs minority vs academic vs subsidized business.

349 Ace,

I don't know if anyone pointed it out yet, but the Math isn't quite as simple as you put it.

(For the record, I am not for Amnesty de facto. I might be for it if it is tactically worthwhile, but I am not sure of that either.)

Here is how Amnesty might make sense. It's a matter of opportunity cost. Increasing a demographic that only votes 40% Republican is, on its face, not smart. However, if NOT increasing that demographic causes it to vote 20% Republican, it can be a good idea. It all depends on the numbers and whether Amnesty would really push the percentages that way.

Let's assume there are 12 million Hispanic voters. Let's also assume Amnesty would add 5 million voters (probably a low estimate, but I am just spitballing to show how it might be a possible boon for Republicans.)

20% of 12 million = 2.4 million for Republicans. So Dems would get 9.6 million, a difference of 7.2 million.

With Amnesty, let's say it is 40% of 17 million, so 6.8 million. That leaves 9.2 million for Dems, a difference of 2.4 million. So, we still lose the demographic, but not by as much.

Again, all the numbers are spitballed. It also doesn't take into account White voter response, but you get the idea.

Is there a "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" gene that only white people have? Unless its pretty much exactlythe same plan the Democrats want (which hopefully it won't be), if we get out front and come up with a big plan of our own that isn't necessairly amnesty but isn't hardline either, then we can dare Harry Reid to table the plan. If he doesn't, it'll get voted down by the Dems in the Senate anyways. At least thenwe can point to this plan and say we made a serious effort on this, why are the Democrats being so obstructive.

400 Late to the party, but we shouldn't be trying to woo any one constituency away from the opposition. Wooing just means whispering sweet nothings in their ear and promising them the sun, moon and stars. Well, we can't do that, because the sun's been mortgaged to China, the EPA has its eye on the moon, and the stars are working on Muslim outreach with NASA. In short, we can't offer anyone MORE of anything, because there's no MORE to be offered.

What we have to do, and this is across the board, is start teaching people -- again -- that self-sufficiency and independence is better than the Nanny State. Show them why this is so, and don't let up on it. Don't get squishy. When you turn squishy, it just means it's easier for the enemy to squash you. We've compromised ourselves into the hard corner, and there's no room left to compromise anymore. We have to start reclaiming ground.

402 Obama is going to try to rush as much shit through as quickly as possible, because our situation is going to quickly and steadily deteriorate and his political capital is greatest now. He did it in 2009 too. Why is Boehner helping him? Why the hurry within 24 hours to jump on the tax increase and amnesty trains? There's certainly an argument that these are huge problems and should not be rushed through. Hoping the GOP House reps are resistant.

But then again, I hoped (and thought) Obamacare wouldn't pass, that SCOTUS would kill it, and that Obama would be shown the door. Maybe I should move up my plan to start doing hard drugs when I turn 80 up a few decades.

It gets dismissed because the idea is relegated to the fringes of the right.

If some intellectuals, hell any intellectual, could lay out the case for a smart, orderly and non-violent means of secession, then it might get more traction. It's not a quick fix. It will require a lot of sacrifice and a few generations to transition in to.

Until that happens, it'll remain a kook fantasy.

434 So Repubs are the party of whites.

It's not the worst thing in the world to be the part of the largest ethnic bloc.

We aren't headed for ethnic bloc voting. We are already there. It's the best predictor of voting behavior.

If you meet somebody and they are black. The odds are 95%+ they support the Dems. If you meet somebody and they are Indian or Pakistani, odds are 70%+ they vote Dem.

We aren't America anymore. That country died a long time ago and we just won't admit it.

We are a multi-ethnic state. Look how multi-ethnic states vote -- by ethnic bloc.

Embrace it. We were the aberration with the melting pot. The Left killed the melting pot decades ago. It's not coming back -- ever.

452 What we need to do is neuter the argument that Republicans hate hispanics. Republicans have chosen to do...nothing on immigration reform. We don't need to support amnesty (we shouldn't) but we should do something more than building a big wall and hoping. Immigration may not be the engine of hispanic opposition but it is a potent fuel. We can't ignore how these issues feed off one another, Ace.

We need to play racial politics. We need to make a sustained and full-frontal assault on Democrats as patronizing hispanics. We need to make the Democratic narrative unpalatable. Our support for immigration reform must be premised on making American stronger by bringing in people with a strong work ethic and traditional values. If we think we can't convince hispanic people on economic issues...only try to keep them out...that's not a winning formula. It's weakness. I think you agree, Ace, that the fading of the gay marriage issue ultimately benefits Republicans politically. The same is true on immigration. We need to own the issue. I'm afraid too many conservatives have painted themselves into a corner of nothing v amnesty.

499 My shock on election night that the majority of the electorate in
America voted for a socialist welfare state over capitalism has only
been dwarfed by the right's ease in accepting the MSM/Team Obama talking
points afterward. We all saw Obama crying, slumped over rambling
on Monday to a puny crowd while Romney speaking to fired up, 10,000+
crowds who waited in the cold rain to see him. But now the MSM
wants us to believe it was tech failures in ORCA that caused those
people not to show up or that a Sandy photo op in a ladies cut leather
bomber jacket turned things around for Obama or-- and this is the most
ludicrous --that DailyKos/SEIU run PPP polls Nate Silver were
"right" and everything that ever happened in every election before was
wrong (including what we saw with our own eyes Monday, November 5th).
But the right has jumped right on those b.s. memes so they can finger
point blame Romney or "changing demographics" (how is the Hispanic
vote supposed to help in the midwest again? Heck, Ryan hurt the ticket
more with women than Romney's stance on immigration did with Hispanics)
rather than see the truth: the corrupt MSM the corrupt Chicago/Union machines "won" that election for Obama and if we don't do
something to stop *both* we will never have a fair election in this
country again.

Mass amnesty is a proven failure. But we should absolutely have a different immigration policy vis a vis Mexico. Mexico poses a unique challenge. If China were on our southern border, I'd also want a different immigration policy. Cubans get favorable treatment. Given the rampant illegal immigration that occurs and our continued benefit from illegals working here, we need to legalize the immigration that is occurring in some reasonable way.

Mainly by accusing you of thinking it. They dream of violence then accuse their opponents of doing the same.

I bet if the big trains came to haul away every Romney voter you know to shove them into an oven, you wouldn't lift a finger in protest. That's who you are. A liberal. A worshiper of death and violence.

Let me let you in on a little secret. Their is NOTHING WRONG WITH MEXICO. It's a great plot of land, and should by all rights have a humming economy almost as good as the US.

But they don't. Because they've got huge huge political problems. Problems I don't want to import. So I insist that every person that wants to immigrate from a country that has known issues go through a rigorous process of selection and naturalization; So I don't import someone else's political issues to heap on top of our own.

It would be really interesting also, to see which states would join a consitutional "new republic". There would be a few surprises, I bet.

"I went to church. I dropped a twenty in the plate. I said my hail mary's. I was in synagogue." "I voted for the poor. I voted for everyone to have healthcare. I voted for everyone to have a voice, not just the rich."
It makes them feel better about themselves, so fuck the long term rot it's causing.

531 It's also not a quick fix, which is another problem I have with the issue. People just tossing it off like the final magic button to solve our problems. It isn't. It will be painful, difficult, require massive sacrifice and commitment...and that's not even taking into account the potential for civil war.

But it has to enter the larger discussion, first. That's what I've been trying to do for years. Frankly, I saw it as the clear future (if there was to be one) since Bush and McShame started with their amnesty bullshit (as that would have destroyed America and led to the Southwest leaving, anyway). Ever since the Indonesian got elected, secession took on a different importance and as he has been allowed to run amok in government there's no question that this Constitutional Republic is definitely dead and buried. So long as people want to talk about amnesty, which means that they are against the notion of national sovereignty, then the idea of secession is a natural continuation. Those of us who want to defend the concept of national sovereignty and the Rule of Law must be allowed to form our own nation where we can practice our form of government - specifically our form of American Federal Constitutional government that we were guaranteed.

Once people can start talking about this seriously then we can get into the details of debt, military, etc. But, that probably won't happen as secession will more likely happen in a forced way (when states like Arizona finally just have had enough) and the chips will just have to fall where they may. Our chances of a Cxechslovakia type resolution is slim. The dems won't let anyone leave, like any true leftists. They hate our guts but enjoy our money and even moreso, love being able to dictate what we can say, think and do.

534 The GOP doesn't actually have an "ethnic voting base", it has an "idea-centric voting base", with "America" as the idea. It's the Left that has brainwashed a good part of the population that that "idea" is actually a "dog whistle", as if the ideas of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are ethnic.Dems will shout you down vociferously for claiming there is evidence of differences in intelligence among races, but they get a pass for saying that certain "ideas" are "white" ideas? Is there a "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" gene that only white people have? That seems FAR more dubious than the genetic evidence for differences in intelligence, yet Dems have no problem denying they exist.

536 If the logic is that the party needs to shake off stale old positions and draw in new voting blocks ... how about we actually take a look at which ideas are in fact stale?

Not to War on Drugs any names, but lots of people find the GOP's 'small-government-don't-micromanage-my-freedoms' vibe hypocritical. Look at gay marriage, which young voters overwhelmingly support. Take the Santorum Sauce away, and the GOP becomes less scary to them. The social penalty for voting GOP vanishes, and new territory opens up for us.

How about war in general? Does anyone know anyone that still thinks we should be in Afghanistan? Remember when George Bush was running for office and outright dismissed the notion of nation building? Where is the GOP leader that's ready to stand up and say that again? Where's the guy who will take the fear-of-another-war card out of the liberal's deck?

The problem with the GOP brand is that on a street level, when you actually talk to people who aren't into politics, they see the disconnect between small government rhetoric vs large government solutions, and it turns them off. It's time for Republicans to take a cold hard look at the autopilot and the waypoints we have programmed into it. The cheap and content-free way of appealing to more voters is to pander to skin color, but you can't outpander the Democrats. You just can't. They feel grievance in their bones, and that can't be faked. It's foolish to try, and ultimately, unnecessary.

Because what we can do is out-think them. That's starts with assessing which fights are worth our time, which are legacy social issues that contemporary society has moved past, and where we might actually win people over. There are core conservative beliefs in live-and-let-live freedom, fiscal responsibility and peace-through-strength that are overwhelmingly popular, but we're losing that fight by letting the core message be diluted by toxic levels of hypocrisy around the edges.

543 The more I think about it, the more I wonder if it is a case of people parroting the candidate they like as wellI think that Obama gets a disproportionate amount of non-white support because he's not white. That's where the huge "he understands me" number might be coming from. It'd be interesting to see what would happen if Rubio wins the nomination and runs against a white guy (which is almost for sure going to happen as the Democratic Paternalists will take the votes, but only have about 3 non-white people in positions of power). Would we see more Hispanics suddenly like individual enterprise?

The biggest disconnect is that conservatives don't ever talk about empowerment as being a result of freedom in non-white neighborhoods. They also seem to be afraid of admitting that discrimination exists and as much as we hate the "i feel your pain" stuff, it would be wise for conservatives to try and understand how past discrimination worked and show non-whites that discrimination comes from Big Government. After all, it was government-paid bus drivers that kicked Rosa Parks to the back of the bus, government-paid cops that unleashed the dogs on civil rights protesters, and government-paid teachers that are failing minority schools.

Last night I had a meeting with some conservative folks I'll be working with. We got on this issue. When I said that black people have only participated in capitalism for 50 years or so, everyone was at first taken aback and challenged that idea. Then I said, if you can't shop at Woolworth's or you can't sell your good because your skin isn't white, you're not participating in capitalism. The average white Republican doesn't get that, not because of some sort of racial attitude, but because it never occurred to them. That is the disconnect that needs to be fixed.

Don't confuse immigration enforcement with immigration policy.

We obviously need a coherent and enforceable policy.

But right now we do have rampant illegal immigration. And most of it is not "bad."

Right now the Republican Party's position is complacency. In part because we don't want to alienate hispanics, in part because enforcement of current laws is impractical, and in part because we don't want to alienate the base. It's a losing formula all around.

I've worked with immigrants of dubious legality and see it as less of an abstraction than perhaps you do. I see the guys who have been here for 5+ years on and off who speak only a few words of english. We can't reasonably deport all these people but they also have no incentive to integrate. We do benefit from immigrant workers. I knew one guy who fled Mexico after his wife was held for ransom. He had been a manager of some sort but in the US washed dishes. I don't know if he had legal status or not. But several years later, he spoke excellent english and was a manager at the restaurant.

549 Most here deeply believe in conservative principles, and that Dem/lefty policies will cause massive pain and destruction if implemented. The second part is about to be tested. If things go as expected, the results will be a better argument for conservatism than any verbal appeal could accomplish.

As undeserving as the are, the GOP will benefit. When this happens, hopefully the tea party will make demands that steer them in the right direction. This might be the most realistic path for us. In the meantime, the GOP should attempt to neither help or hinder Obama. Actively helping him betrays our principles and will give no one a reason to turn to conservatism. Hindering them will dilute the pain and people must realize their suffering is caused by Dems.

It's already beginning, with the reports of impending layoffs and closings. Jacked up taxes starting Jan 1 and more Obamacare chaos will also be felt by many people.

551 I think Bush got 45%, not 40%, of the Latino vote...but I could have that wrong.

If you get 40% of the Latino vote you can win, if you get 20% you probably can't. So while it's counter-intuitive, it's better to let more D voters in as long as you get a higher percentage overall.

Saying we're going to do nothing about this on-going problem for the superficial reason that we're afraid it may help Democrats is not going to be considered a legitimate argument by anyone...ANYONE.

It's the ultimate argument of a self-serving politician. BTW, the whole "enforce the Border first" thing, has also always been illogical. Most non criminal illegals just come in legitimately and then stay. Border enforcement is mostly about criminals (e.g., drug dealers).

Lastly, if we don't deal w/ this now, when we still have some leverage (the House), eventually the Ds will gain enough power, where they will simply do it themselves.

They'll then get all the credit and the Latino voting pool will be permanently poisoned.

So you don't see what this gets us, but do see what not doing it gets us in both the short and long term: screwed even worse.

BTW, O was right when he talked to that Iowa newspaper, off the record...Latinos did put him in office. And he will continue to demagogue this issue. Face it: as a politician, he's smarter than our side.

Refusing very publicly to do immigration reform is exactly what O wants you to do. And so many of you are going to do it for him (shouting to everyone who will listen how politically astute you all are the whole time).

Correct.

434 It's not the worst thing in the world to be the part of the largest ethnic bloc.
-
Not inherently, but it is if you consistently let your ethnic bloc be reduced absolutely and / or as a share of the population, be discriminated against (by affirmative action) and generally be reduced in wealth, power and prestige.

A functioning sectional party has to support its section, promote the opposite of the bad things that happen to a losing ethnic group, and get credit for that from its natural supporters.

To put it mildly, amnesty is inconsistent with this.

555 499 "rather than see the truth: the corrupt MSM the corrupt Chicago/Union machines "won" that election for Obama and if we don't do
something to stop *both* we will never have a fair election in this

country again."
--

Yes x 100.

It's frustrating that the GOP and conservatives are all blindly firing in a circle rather than looking, hard, at the left. If the election was stolen, then the GOP is unnecessarily digging itself new, deeper holes for itself based on false premises. It is crucial that we investigate the 2012 election with a microscope before we start writing prescriptions for 2016 or even 2014. There is absolutely no downside to a thorough investigation. That the GOP is so quick to move on is counter-intuitive; they should want to look for evidence of fraud and I'm not sure what to make of their behavior (don't want to go tin foil, but their behavior is puzzling).

If there was systematic fraud, or enough in just 3 or 4 states, it could be responsible for O instead of R. We have a short window, until Obama is sworn in, to find out if the election was stolen. No harm done if we find out if was not.

And angienc is right, if we don't do anything now, we are giving up on fair elections. The left will know they can get away with more and more because nobody will do anything about it or even raise questions. Every indication, and there were many, pointed to a Romney win. We have known for years the left would do anything to keep the WH in 2012. It is inconceivable they did not employ fraud; we just don't know the extent, and the hows and wheres.

Frankly I thought Romney/GOP anticipated fraud better and had armies of lawyers ready. The lack of activity or even questioning is surprising. As was Romney's concession even when we knew military votes were suppressed, in Philly they kicked out GOP poll watchers, and voting machines were changing R votes to O. Maybe Romney was so stunned he wasn't thinking clearly?

350 The GOP doesn't actually have an "ethnic voting base", it has an "idea-centric voting base", with "America" as the idea.
-
There's a competing agenda promoted by the mass media, academia and so on, and its bottom line is anti-White. It's everybody versus Whitey, or if we're being even more specific, against straight White men.

Among Whites, a strong majority prefer the idea "America" and a very important minority accept the anti-White complex of ideas. There are Whites who hate White people as much as any none-White. (Rev. Michael Pfleger, famously associated with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the Trinity Baptist Church, is an example.)

Among non-Whites, a strong majority are receptive to anti-White ideas, and a minority prefer "America". Unlike with Whites, the anti-White idea does not conflict with collective, ethnic self-interest. And it pays. So even non-White groups with no obvious internal coherence or grievance against Whites, like "Asians" (who are actually doing better than Whites educationally and in career-building) are always likely to be drawn into the anti-White coalition.

This is immensely important for practical politics.

My point is that he's going to demagogue the issue to motivate his base to come out in the mid-terms and re-take the House.

If it works they'll just do amnesty by themselves, and w/ no compromise at all. In other words, no "getting in the back of the line" and waiting for ten years or more before you can vote.

Pissing off the 40+ million Latinos (and millions of Asians, btw) because you are afraid of what will happen w/ the votes of the ten million illegals ten years from now is called "getting out-chess-moved by O".

This is why I said O is smarter than our side (I don't mean smarter than you in particular). As I said the percentage matters more than the absolute number...mid-30s to low-40s you can win, 20s (where we're heading if we don't get real w/ this) and we lose. Lose enough and the Ds just do amnesty anyway, a worse variety, and get all the credit.

Off topic: I'll take a Mexican w/ 2 or 3 jobs over some lazy lily-white "occupy" type any day. But that's just me.

I think for Republicans to sell out their White base on this issue would be demoralizing.

577 @ Lightworker

I cling to the naive idea that we can convince people. Since hispanics and blacks and gays are secluded in their "communities" we need to go through the gates of those communities and make an effort. We keep hoping they see how great our American-centric views are but the Democratic guards at the gate don't permit them to peek out much. Those communities don't understand that their community gates are actually prison bars. We need to appeal to minorities on their own terms. That doesn't mean adopting liberal policies.

Terrible idea to cluster behind our own gates. I understand your view quite well. I understand its genesis. Setting aside any moral objections, it is simply short-sighted.

578 575 Why does everyone claim that current immigrants do not want to assimilate?
-
Because they continue to be different in the second and third generations, and actually in later generations.

And, they are not White. The practical, political significance of this is that they always have an offer on the table from the anti-White left to take up the hate-Whitey cause, realize they are oppressed, and get free stuff. History shows that that offer, constantly and artfully made, and backed by real free stuff, is effective.

579 Latinos are as white as Jews, Irish, Italians, Chaldeans, etc.

It's so bizarre to get fixated on "race" as if it's this insurmountable stumbling block between people. Sit down have some drinks with some Mexicans, and you'll find that they are fine folks, just as willing to work as you are, probably for less money and longer hours. In a generation, their kids will be marrying your kids and all this nonsense about how they will always be different is just trash. (Doesn't stop some people from saying the same things about Jews, who, DO have ethnic and religious practices that are distinct from American protestants... But are nonetheless good, respectable Americans just like everyone else).

What made the Irish "black" to the British, the Jews "scary" to WASPs, the Italians "dark" to everyone else was, in large part, the "white" groups willingness to accentuate the distinction with these foreign groups and stoke feelings of resentment and hate.

The reason Latinos break for progressive candidates is the same reason other groups do.... Conservatives have often argued that minority cultures degrade the dominant one. And if you come from one of these minority cultures.... why would you vote for someone that sees your presence as a problem? Think about it. Even if your sole aim is to assimilate and start a business and live like a capitalist, you still aren't going to struggle to be warm to people who see your accent as evidence of moral decay.

580 I find it a little odd that an ethnic group; so proud of their unique culture that they refuse to assimilate; whose loudest self-described civil rights group is called "the Race"; are, on one hand coming off as conservative old family value types, yet on the other hand demanding social programs to support their old family values; and they actually favor socialist democrats?

Oh, that's right, they are fucking national socialists, right there on the surface.

Of course democrats see socialism like fish see water, so all they see are a proud ethnic people.

581 "Oh, that's right, they are fucking national socialists, right there on the surface."

It's not the hatred that directed at them that dissuades Latinos from voting Republican.... it's the fact that Latinos are actually nazis.

Hmmmm..... food for thought. The kind of food for thought that gives you e. coli.

582 Fraud stole it and now, lies based on the fraud (like we "lost" because we're anti-amnesty) threaten to change the GOP forever. We the grassroots must tell people that we not only didn't "lose" over amnesty, we didn't "lose" period! Ulterman's Report, Pundit Press, "ObamaFraud", and Lame Cherry. Read them!

If the RINOs/party leaders get their way and change the GOP based on these lies, they will run a LEFTIST in '16 (if there is a '16); it will be JEB; he's thick as thieves with Rove and party leaders and guess what? He's pro-AMNESTY. These party leaders are prepping us for JEB with these lies.

Aslan's Girl, I've been making the same point too. I need the fraud to be proven (or disproven), because I too fear the GOP will do stupid things based on faulty intel.

Relatively few people seem to be considering fraud, which I consider to be an obvious thing to check before we start the circular firing squad which is well under way. If fraud is proven, and the result would be a Romney win otherwise, then for God's sake let's not let Obama get away with it. Seriously hope the GOP or Romney camp is investigating. Even if we find that it wasn't decisive in Obama's win, at least we (and the left) will know we aren't rolling over.

584 "I went to church. I dropped a twenty in the plate. I said my hail mary's. I was in synagogue." "I voted for the poor. I voted for everyone to have healthcare. I voted for everyone to have a voice, not just the rich." It makes them feel better about themselves, so fuck the long term rot it's causing. BCCohran, the church-going Catholics vote GOP(and it's been my experience that the people in the pews are frequently far more conservative than the old '60's era Vatican II priests.) So do Orthodox Jews. The problem is not the religious ones, it's the mainly secular, Christmas-and-Easter Catholics and the Jews who turn up at the synagogue once a year that are the problem

586 How much longer will the GOP remain the only politcal group not permitted to appeal directly to its ethnic voting base?

It already does.

587 579 Latinos are as white as Jews, Irish, Italians, Chaldeans, etc.

No, and they know the difference. Brown Pride and Brown Power and La Raza are racial concepts. No White guy told Cain Velasquez to get a big Brown Pride tattoo on his chest.

579 What made the Irish "black" to the British, the Jews "scary" to WASPs,
the Italians "dark" to everyone else was, in large part, the "white"

groups and stoke feelings of resentment and hate.

No, that's an anti-White narrative that hides everybody else's contributions to conflicts and pretends that it was all about Whites inventing a false distinction to oppress people. So there are no real "whites" but they are still guilty of all racial conflict anyway. What a piece of sophistry.

The reason Latinos break for progressive candidates is the same reason
other groups do.... Conservatives have often argued that minority
cultures degrade the dominant one.
-
No, they vote for Democrats because they are Democrats. These are their values; pro-big government and so on.

You are propagating a false narrative where everything is Whitey's fault, even though you also suggests with scare quotes that Whites don't exist. You are anti-White and you are not telling the truth.

No, there is a huge difference between an implicitly White appeal and an explicitly White appeal, a direct appeal, which is what's needed.

An implicitly White appeal is when politicians rock up at places Whites like, such as NASCAR events, and they say vague things that imply they have a lot in common with the people there, but they never articulate Whites as a legitimate group with legitimate interests like any other, and they do nothing for Whites as Whites. It's all smiles and waves and no action.

A direct, explicitly White politics is when you openly say you are appealing to Whites, just as if you were talking to "the Black community" or some other group like that, and then you actually defend White interests. You oppose Affirmative Action, explicitly so that Whites can have as good a chance as anyone else to get a job they are qualified for. You don't pretend you only care about Blacks getting a false reputation for being over-promoted or whatever. You explicitly say you are doing this because it's good for White people to have fair employment rules, and then you follow through. And then you tell White people: 'I did this for you; vote for me,' in the same way that politicians tell Blacks or Jews or any legitimate group that their legitimate collective interests have been served and the politician wants to be rewarded with votes for that.

Only explicitly White politics can ever defend White interests when they are challenged, which in a multi-racial state with an active anti-White mass media and an anti-White party (the Democratic Party) they constantly are.

In reality, Whites do not receive the benefits of explicit identity politics, as other groups do; they are constantly attacked as a group but do not get defended as a group. This is bad for the Whites, and in the long run also bad for the party that gets 90% of its votes from the Whites, because when you let your supporters be driven down into the dirt, you go down after them.

589 Look at the most recent cover of Newsweek magazine, and read the top headline:

GOP: YOU'RE OLD, YOU'RE WHITE, YOU'RE HISTORY!

Do you think you can hide from the anti-White left that the Republican Party is the White Party, that this is all about race, and that the anti-Whites are winning? Good luck with that.

590 How many Latinos even know about groups like La Raza or MeCha exist, much less support them? It's like saying all blacks are secretly in favor of the Black Panthers. Most Latinos are regular people just trying to make a living.

And get this: Latino nationalities and ethnicities are not all the same. There is animosity between Mexicans and Cubans and South Americans and Central Americans just as there can be between Europeans of different nations and Asians of different countries. They are not some homogeneous bloc supporting some racial conspiracy.
