For Sequestration

Sequestration is a terrible, horrible, no good idea.

And we must let it happen.

You know what you call $1.2 trillion in budget cuts? A good start.

After last night it's clear that as presently constituted there is no electoral path to reducing the size and scope of government. Since we can not do that in an orderly and rationale way, we must use the tool we have at hand.

The lame duck will feature a lot of talk about "grand bargains". No Just no. While the GOP and conservatives were crushed last night, the GOP still retains control of the House so "the people" voted for more gridlock. Then gridlock they shall have. And that means enforcing the current law of the land....sequestration.

I'd much rather a messy, disorganized and painful set of cuts than an clean, orderly and disastrous set of tax and spending increases.

As someone once said, "never let a crisis go to waste bitches". At least I think that's what they said.

Oh and the debt ceiling needs to be raised again.

As a commenter pointed out: Let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. All the people who were taken off the roles 10 years ago? Back on baby!

1 Agree.
Let's have sequestration.
Sounds great to me.
Also, just for fun, when the Bush tax cuts expire, lots of the 47% who currently pay no taxes, will 'suddenly' find themselves with tax bills again.
Yay.

You want to know why we lost? I decided I am going to go engage in some consumer whoredom to assuage my utter depression over the election results. I'm about to leave to do so and what did I do? I checked my bank balance, made sure my bills were paid, made note of my balance, deducted out the one bill that will hit next week, moved some money to the savings account and then decided how much money I have to spare. After all, if I can't pay cash, I can't afford it. Those who voted Obama in? Off to the mall baby! I think there's still room on the credit card!

49 I'll be interested to see what the Church does as a result of this assault on religious freedom. I see four possibilities:

1) Lawsuits.
2) Simple refusal to follow the mandate--hopefully with the imagery of priests and nuns being dragged off in handcuffs
3) Restricting their educational and health services to Catholics only. This is a hard decision, but apparently the only businesses considered "religious" are those that cater to only one religion
4) Closing down Catholic schools, hospitals, and charities.

The fifth, I suppose, is capitulation, but the day that happens is the day I take a second look at Orthodoxy or some other faith.

For sequestration...

Got a Plan B?:

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is scheduled to deliver a statement this afternoon on the need for a bipartisan deal to avoid jumping off the fiscal cliff, a combination of tax increases (including the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts) and spending cuts that will go into effect in January.

Congress has eight weeks to come to an agreement. Boehner will argue that Republicans and Democrats must “take steps together,” according to a brief press release from his office.

So...we like small government...but we reallylike huge military budgets and havingover a hundred permanent bases in other nations - not including embassy detachments -including the militarization of our national civilian LEO's,too. Uh...That's part of the definition of an empire, folks. It's also part of the definition of a police state. If America is a global empire, then embrace it. If we're a police state, then embrace that. If we're a nation of free people, then embrace that. You can't do all three. Not and call yourselves sane, anyway. There's no ...logic in holding those three thoughts all at the same time, folks. You can be an empire and a police state, but you can't have small government with either of the other two, let alone with both.
Support for small government, not to mention constitutional constructivism, says that if you get the global empire, you don't get the freedom and liberty, let alone small government.
Slash the military budget, of course, only after we bring our troops home, except for, perhaps certain aspects of support for Veterans. (We hired them, we sent them into harms' way, we gotta tke responsibility for the outcome.) also: If we go to war, we break things and kill people, make the rubble bounce, take their stuff, and come home. We don't nation build. We don't build permanent military bases on foreign soil. We're the United States of America, not the Empire of America. Says so right on the paperwork: "We, the People, of the United States of America..." unless, you know, it's just another g-d damned piece of paper, after all.

142 HA HA Drew! Classic next-morning post.

First, you are absolutely right that is the correct answer for any serious person.

But I'm the guy slapping you across the face next-morning. Get it tougher, man. The House GOP is going to say "no" again to Obama? Um. Dude. These establishment guys only think in terms of win/loss. To them [-- worried about 2014 re-election and looking wide-eyed at one another as they wait, LEADERLESS [in any real sense], for some spin angle to glom onto and push out to US, their, you know, loyal supporters --] the Country just said raise taxes of peeps making $250+ per year. Done and done. They WILL agree to that in principle, and thus sequestration falls away.

How it's spun? Heh. Boehner will call Obama, grovel and concede essentially to Obama's terms. Worried about the fallout in the conservative base, Boehner will privately make a "face saving" deal with Obama where Boehner and his House get to thunder and pomp on the House floor and conservative media framing some issue (military spending? Budget cuts?) and then Obama, getting to play his much desired "conciliatory card," will make some concession and a deal will be done. Obama and Boener will then go out and suck each other c--ks about working together.

100% guaranteed this is how it goes down. Just fill in the blank: What's the GOP framed issue [oh, we'll get something catchy that will get mouthed around our own echo chamber] that Obama will agree to?

This is an easy one to game out. GOP needs to (a) speak to anger of base, (b) save some face after this election debacle, and (c) avoid their perceived risk of pissing off this new majority that will wipe them out in 2014.

Obama needs to get started on his makeover. He'll pull the trigger on some notable staff changes. But more importantly, he needs to appear to have stature, reasonableness and maturity. You know. "Obama - the Champion Bi-Partisan of President of all time"

So Obama will have to give GOP something. But what could Obama POSSIBLY give the GOP?

HA HA HA SUCKERS!

"Budget Cuts" Washington Style. You know, using fraudulent methods of accounting for "cuts" and "investments" etc.

Same old shit folks.

I think the only way to get the 47% down to something reasonable is to give the nation a good dose of the agenda they elected and let them watch where it takes us. Remember, it wasn't a fluke like we thought, the American people *want* Obama to be President. In order to change that thinking, we need to let them have a whole bunch of what they voted for.

One thing to remember about Sequestration:

It hits Defense harder than any other department, because they all had their baseline budgets jacked up at the beginning of O's term. Cutting them just gets them back to basline, whereas Defense gets real hard cuts.

Have a nice day.

Posted by: Fnord at November 07, 2012 01:37 PM (hoJnS)

For decades, the Democrats have used military spending as a hostage, demanding tax increases or a hands-off policy on entitlements or they'll kill the military. They've always played it as a bluff, knowing the GOP is viscerally concerned with protecting the country, but it's time, I think, to let them shoot the hostage and have done with it. I don't write this lightly: my own son is finishing out his advanced infantry training and his assigned permanentunit is slated for deployment to Afghanistan in early March. I want him to have everything he will need on the battlefield. I want him home safe, but I also want him to live his life in a country worth fighting for.

No more grand bargains or compromises. No more reaching across the aisle. No more nice.

185 Totally agree Drew. Let the Sequestration happen. Let the Bush tax cuts expire. Sure, it'll hurt - but I'd rather take the hurt now, then let some "compromise" permanently establish more pain. If the Democrats want to stop the Sequestration - or keep the tax cuts - then they need to move towards us.

Posted by: MattR at November 07, 2012 02:03 PM (xEKPT)

186 All of the left wing political movements - The Nazis the Communists and the Progressives share one thing in common; a pathological hatred of anyone who is successful. The left in this country is made up of many different factions who's only binding tie is that hatred. That hatred is the reason that Obama's cry of revenge was so effective at rallying his base of all of life's losers.

I am sure that most of you thought "Revenge - against whom and for what purpose? What have we done to anyone to warrant 'revenge'?" The answer to that last question is that you were more successful at life than somebody else was. The beta male personality of most chronic losers is not concerned with absolute values of success, but only in relative values. The fact that the worst losers in this country live like kings lived in almost any other time and place - matters not to people who measure happiness and success in relative terms. To them the fact that a person is more successful than they are is not a source of inspiration, an example of how to do things, but rather a person to hate because they make the comparative failure look and feel bad.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote "...the gulags were not an unfortunate side effect of Communism; the gulags were the whole point of Communism." Until you understand this about our adversaries you will not understand what they mean to do. What they want to do is to drag you down to their miserable level of failure - if the country is dragged down with you - that bothers them not in the least. That is their real agenda - and that is exactly what they intend to do. From the Kos kids in their parent's basement to college professors who provide the intellectual base for leftism (remember - those who can do, those who can't teach.) revenge is their motive.

On the other, I'm thinking all the threats of people to vote Libertarian, to let it get bad enough that people realize how bad it is, people picking up their ball and going home, etc., etc., were not empty threats. So, now instead of a pragmatic victory, we have a pretty major loss leaving us with just the House to play cards with. Oddly enough, I don't think the media, in 2016, will suddenly think that they can stop blaming Bush. I'll say that if things don't get better, they'll just repeat what they have for four years:

I would love to know what libs think they actually gained by electing tfg, again.

I mean facts, and why it is a good thing.

unemployment is historically high
(esp among blacks)
homelessness up
income down
inflation
downgrades
weak dollar
less freedom
food stamps up

what exactly? what is the upside?

what do free contraceptives really do for a society or an economy?

what does biggov really do? It doesn't fix ue.

obamacare? it doesn't cover everyone, will lead to massive suffering, esp for the elderly or euthanasia. Less doctors. Less choice. Poorer technologies. Less research. And, increased taxes.

Increasing taxes and weaving in fees and penalties into every aspect of our lives just makes a country poorer --- see any socialist country and california.

SS will go broke under libs.

Honestly, what is the upside?

284 $1.2 trillion would make a difference if the cuts happened in ONE year. Then the budget would actually almost balance.

Over ten years that number means jack shit.

So for all the phoniness that sequestration represents, I say roll over on it. Give the Dems whatever they want to avert the cliff. Make it crystal clear that THEY OWN IT. Abstain on the votes, even. If the American people want the SCOAMF's "ideas" to carry the day, well then, that's what they get. If the Republic burns as a result .. then that's what happens. The people get the government and the country that they voted for. Eventually the tipping point is passed and you can no longer save the country from itself.

That point was passed last night. The death spiral is inevitable now. May as well bring it on.

Also, these defense contractors are not much different than Solyndra. Basically, crony capitalism for those with the best lobbyists. The F-35 fighter jet program was shown to cost a trillion dollars, that's less than is being cut with sequestration.

Our Founders would have been disgusted if they saw what sort of things our military engages in. Unless we're going to be invaded, we should stay out of it. The NeoCons are what destroyed the Republican brand.

We are fighting an uphill battle with demographics. You cannot win a national election when you only carry 30% of the Hispanic vote, especially given their % of the electorate will continue to increase.
It is time for our side to offer sensible, comprehensive immigration reform. Lyndon Johnson became the champion of the Great Society and believed that Blacks would be beholden to the Democrats for the next 200 years. Except, of course, if the Dems decide to runMichelle "Evita" Obama who will win in a landslide because she'll be the first female AND black president and by then we'll be so thorougly and completely lobotomized and brainwashed into the growing-by-leaps-and-bounds identity politics culture that the p-whipped Republicans won't even bother to field an opposition candidate.

325 I am hearing that Obama was +10 on women voters last night. And more women are voting in elections consistently than men.

You are not getting the full story on that number. Sure women went for Obama but if you break it down it was because 96% of minority women voted for him and only around 45% white women.

So it is really the minority vote that put him ahead. I say "minority" but I guess I should say "privileged class". Whites are the minority now.

327 a question for anyone who might know - how much of the Defense budget is related to active military and retiree comp and benefits, how much is overhead (see Washington D.C.) and how much is actually spent on weaponry and programs?

328 Agreed. The military budget needs to be cut. They'll adapt. They'll have to figure out the details for themselves. I literally could not care less about the other cuts.

The media, of course, will blame the results on the GOP House. It should be pretty fucking obvious by now that they'll blame the Republicans for everything anyway, no matter what we actually do. So we really need to stop pretending that we're winning fucking style points and start doing some actual governing.

No, but there are plenty of people happy to take shots at us and damn the consequences. Cutting the military and pulling out of the rest of the world will only leave it a much more violent and dangerous place, and that will eventually come back to haunt us.

343 We are fighting an uphill battle with demographics. You cannot win a national election when you only carry 30% of the Hispanic vote, especially given their % of the electorate will continue to increase.

The main flaw is that this assumes that amnesty would result in an increased percentage of this vote. I do not believe that the percentage would increase; furthermore, the raw number of Democrat voters would explode since the vast majority of the newly minted legal immigrants originate from countries in which handouts and patronage are an expected way of life.

Do-Nothing needs to be a badge of honor. For every liberal and reporter that complains about deadlock, every GOP Congressmen can point back to the election, "My constituents don't have a problem with my priorities." We crawled over glass, and yes, it failed. Now it's their turn. Obama and the Dems should have to crawl over glass to get meetings with the House GOP. Then they should still tell them, "With all do respect, Fuck Off!"

My dream, though, (and I'm not totally familiar with the rules), does the House even have to organize, Can the GOP simply opt-out, flee-bag even, would the Dems have recourse. What are the Quorum rules?, the GOP should just always ensure there aren't enough bodies to conduct business on the Floor. Keep the Committees running we still have to get to the bottom of Fast Furious and Benghazi, but nothing else can happen.

Too many of them don't understand that empires can and do collapse. They were raised in an era of US global domination and take that to be "normal" rather than an accidental "gift" side effect of being the last man standing after WWII.

Well, the last man standing effect started to wear off in the late 1990's, and its completely gone now. The "gift" 40 years was squandered by dim bulb politicians who thought it was the new normal too.

What we're seeing now with Obamanomics, the economy, unemployment, etc is a reversion to the pre-WWII norms where the US wasn't particularly exceptional...the "new normal" today is reversion to the old normal for pretty much of all 5,000 years of recorded history.

360 Forget what the Repubs need to do. It's economic collapse. What emerges from that collapse will be nothing like the current status quo. Unfortantely, 9 times out of 10, that gives you a Hitler and not say a George Washington or Abe Lincoln so I'm not hopeful.
Only consolation is SCOAMF will be presiding over that crisis. Debt to GDP is at 104% or so (take a gander at the lastest DTS over at Treasury and see how fast total debt jumped in Oct. Debt ceiling runs out before year's end).
The only thing holding us up is pure pyschology, the belief amongst the world that the US economy can't fail. Just like Wile. E. Coyote when he finally noticed there's nothing but air underneath his feet, we crash.
We'll have a debt crisis before SCOAMF is out, the world will drop the dollar as the reserve currency (China and Russia are just waiting to make the move), and then the shit hits the fan.
Helicopter at the Fed will either print fast enough to cover the deficits and we hyperinflate, or he won't and we go into deflationary collapse mode. Either way, real GDP collapse and it's Argentina.

It's not an Amnesty or giveaway issue. Throwing Amnesty into the ring now would get us a firm backslap from the Hispanics and they would carry on voting Democratic.

We have an optics problem with women and hispanics based on the Dem and Media portrayal of Republicans as being the party of old, white men who hate immigrants (unless they are mowing our lawns). We need to actively recruit young, vibrant Hispanics in the Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona.

Once we have established a base of Hispanic trust in the Southwest, we could extend outwards to the growing populations of hispanics in the midwest and east coast.

Whatever you meant to say is immaterial as the end result (and the only goal of the Democrats and the greedhead Republicans) is total amnesty. We could go in with a good faith attempt at commonsense reform and we would still end up with some form of amnesty because our people continually make the mistake of assuming that the Democrats are good faith negotiators. They don't care about Hispanics, they only care about power, and more Hispanic voters means more Democrats elected.

Why? Because it's a no-win for the GOP. For all his faults, Boehner is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

They can negotiate and get screaming wrath from the base, or they can hold firm, shut down the government, get blamed and face an angry electorate in 2014 who wants their goodies back.

Anything the GOP does in January can be undone by a Dem controlled House who would be all too happy to just raise the debt ceiling without cutting spending.

The country is sick, but the voters have decided that the medicine is too bitter to take. Force it down their throats and they'll find a new doctor.

If you're looking for a solution, there isn't one short of convincing the electorate that they can't have their cake and eat it too.

382 Aside from the insane defense cuts and letting the Bush tax rates expire, the rest of sequestration is exactly what the nation needs. If anyone wants to "let it all burn" then that would entail NOT having the rest of the sequestration cuts and NOT raising the debt limit since that would be adding fuel to this fire and bring on the reality of rising interest rates sooner, which will be the massive, fiery explosion as the Fed loses control and the reality of the debt becomes totally unservicable. It would not seem as bad for a little bit of time into 2013 but that facade would crumble late in the year and the economy, monetary system, and feral government would all look like a Fisker Karma race in the rain.

America's Suicide by Indonesian is complete. A trillion in cuts and not raising the debt limit are the only chances this nation might have to muddle through, at least on the financial side. Cold comfort even if that came to pass as the rest of society will be assaulted and killed, anyway.

I don't understand everyone calling for House Republicans to abstain. I
sure as hell didn't vote for my representative yesterday so he could
abstain. I voted for him to say "No. Hell no!" to everything Obama or
Reid tried to push through.
--
Because abstaining has the same end result as "hell no" without giving the media/Dems the opportunity to demonize the GOP as obstructionists and "the party of no."

Don't stop them, but don't help them.

But this is idle talk. Boehner will deal. The GOP reps might or might not go along though.

396 Liquidated my stocks. Going to every pawn shop in town to buy silver.
Not sure if its the best way to buy it. Anyone have better options ?
Silver rounds on line ?

Don't know about other places - but in Texas you never want to buy less than $1000 worth of silver at a time; there is no sales tax on bullion sales of $1000 or more. Saves $87.50 per thousand.

397 the 47% who don't pay taxes will feel it somehow.

Posted by: perdogg at November 07, 2012 03:07 PM (oSdsj)

398 All of this. Sequestration....let the tax cuts expire....all of it. Honestly, I wish Boehner would just meet once with Obama, tell him we look forward to whatever plan he has and then leave. Just adjourn the house.

The media will complain. The media hates us anyway.

400 Agreed, Drew.
No tax cuts. The Obama Party wants all the Bush tax cuts gone, they can have them gone.
People want higher taxes so damn bad; let them pay them themselves.
And yes on sequestration. As it was put beautifully above, it's time to shoot the hostage. Let the Obama Party explain why they massively slashed defense spending to give money to the drunks. We saw this when they essentially sh*t themselves to keep layoff notices from going out prior to the election; use it.

401 "I was at the gym earlier and fox news was on one of the tv's and they flashed some exit polling data that stated something like 59% of voters said the economy was the most important issue, and only something like 40% thought the country was headed in the right direction, and yet Obama was reelected?"

Learned helplessness. Economic ignorance.

For too many people, of all parties, voting isn't about enacting real-world solutions. No more than sex is about making babies. It's something you do to feel good. Or maybe for revenge. A distraction from watching the world inexplicably fall apart all around you. Then, of course, you chalk it up to "bad luck" and do it all over again.

So people know it's bad but they don't think they can do anything about it. It's ok, though, cuz their smart friends the Democrats take are fixing everything and standing guard so Scrooge McDuck doesn't steal their vaginas while they sleep.

402 "And that means enforcing the current law of the land....sequestration."

Which will quite possibly lead to some part(s) of the world blowing up.

403 They'll just borrow more to fund the spending. In fact, the current administration will use the plummeting economy as a reason to have another gigantic wasteful stimulus.

Posted by: looking closely at November 07, 2012 01:37 PM (PwGfd)

Borrow from whom?
The world will loan us to do siht they don't want to do, like security, that they will get a return.
They won't for us to go all Wall-eye.

404 FUCK 'EM.
Say yes to everything they want. Raise taxes, more regs, more free shit..go for it.
I just want to hurry the WAR along! Sooner the better.
And I'm making nothing but grocery purchases from now on. If I can afford 'em.

406 Drop the hammer on all this shit. Show the idiot fuckers what Bush did for them and what Obama's done to them.

407 Until this country totally collapses nothing will really change. The takers will suck the well dry and have a better lifestyle than the makers. None of the rest really matters.

Posted by: conservativechick at November 07, 2012 03:48 PM (8GQ/G)

408 I agree with this. Completely. Don't raise the debt ceiling. Let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire for EVERYONE. Drive off the "fiscal cliff" at full speed.

Let it burn.

411 While going over the fiscal cliff has some of the same appeal as "Hey, let's go over Niagara Falls!", I work for a defense contractor. We would find not having any income very inconvenient at this point. It would be one of several times that has happened since 2001. I know for sure that I don't want to voluntarily do this again. You can go over the cliff, but I don't want to go with you. There has to be a better way. Admittedly, one better way would have been to not re-elect El Presidente Obama (president for life of the banana republic formerly known as America).

Posted by: Jim Bender at November 07, 2012 05:24 PM (fbpjp)

412 Last night was the night we lost our country. It's a slow creep toward second-rate banana republic status now. We're officially a kleptocracy.
