21 Good morning, all. Polls are open here in Indiana.

My daughter, who moved back home, had to get a drivers' license yesterday in order to vote today. (She forgot that a Virginia DL wouldn't work for voting purposes.)

Indiana requires picture ID with proof of residence.

To get her license, she had to produce birth certificate, Social Security card, divorce decree, and two bills with her address here.

I would say that Indiana won't have too many fake ID's in use.

Im in CT too. I just wish this state had a real chance to go either way. Sadly, cities like Bridgeport and Hartford, probably hurt this state the most voting wise and otherwise if you know what I mean. You can throw New Haven in there too.

87 Just got back from voting Romney/Allen/Griffith in SW Virginia. I got there about 10 of 6 (polls open at 6 here), and there were about 6-8 folks already in line...14-15 inside voting or in line to vote while I was there and still that many when I left with more walking up thru the parking lot. That's compared to maybe 8-10 at the same time of day in 2010...fwiw, likely not much.

This county narrowly went for Obama in 2008 (I wasn't living here then), but went for Griffith in 2010 when he flipped the congressional district to the GOP. I expect Obama will get a lot of votes here this time, too...35-40% of the county gets some sort of government check every month and some families (through several generations) have probably been on the dole since the 1930s. That's the factor that helps Obama run better here than he should...or it did in 2008 anyway.

It looks way too easy to copy for me to feel comfortable about, but at least there were making sure names and current addresses were matching up here locally. I'm guessing they won't be that careful in places like inner city Richmond and around DC.

This would be depressing unless you've seen some previous discussions hear about the proliferation of Romney/Ryan signs in the same neighborhood over the last 2 months. In 2008, literally every home had an Obama sign.

Just a note on what you might hear about Ohio today...

Ohio doesn't have partisan registration, so it is impossible to determine how the early vote is broken down. The counts you will see from the pollsters and news agencies are returned absentee ballots and early voting totals based on precincts and how they voted in 2008.

The trouble with this method is that in 2008, there were a number of precincts that went narrowly to Obama just because it was a "historic" race. So now, even though the precinct was a fairly republican area in the past and in 2010, any returned early vote is assumed to be for Obama. This skew the results tremendously.

This miscounting will also cause screams of fraud when the real totals are released. Democrats will say that it's impossible they lost and cite early vote reports using the flawed methodology. The shit is going to hit the fan all because of bad reporting.

If Romney wins, I hope he does 2 small, symbolic, but important things. Vows to not campaign until sometime in 2016...this perpetual campaigning has to stop. And, keep the Inaugural celebration small, tidy, and non-glam. Every contrast he can make with SCOMF will help.

The Bible says that every government in place is ordained by God and that He alone sets up and takes down. I have quoted that to myself many many times recently. Lines this morning were longer than expected. Nobody really said who they were voting for but lot's of talk of getting a fresh start, digging out of this mess, etc. and other very generous allusions to Romney. I would say of the early voters 65-75% Romney.

I didn't live in this precinct last election so I can't say how this compares to 2008. But I did notice a much stronger Romney volunteer and sign presence than Obama. 223 Went to polling place. Parking lot was packed. 3-4 times as many as previous elections (even '0. Folks work around here even if they don't draw a paycheck from somewhere so lots of early votes isn't uncommon but not a full parking lot.

At least we won't be blaming 6% for staying home around here.

I sure do hope its people voting to move on from the last four years than stick with more of the same. But in this stupid state, its probably more liberals wanting more of the same. Have to believe though that in other less blue states, people wanting to get rid of Obama will really come out in droves.

I hear that. Knowing how many liberals are here, I grew a bit angry the closer I got to the ballet this morning. Especially after seeing some Obama signs and what I view as some obvious Obama voters in line. I cant stand people like them. How people can be so ignorant and so idiotic. And I bet most of them could not debate why they think Obama should be re-elected with any facts or sense. I just think there are a lot of voters who vote yet know literally nothing but catch phrases and repeats of the lying attacks on Romney.

267 So, I volunteered with the RnR campaign, was all set up to be an election observer, had my precinct assignment and all my Project Orca information...THEN, I got an email from the chairman of the Carteret County Republican Party informing me that North Carolina election laws do not permit poll observers from a specific candidate, only from one of the political parties. Observers have to attend special training sessions, there are only three observers permitted at any polling place, and basically this guy had no idea what the hell Project Orca was. So...I tried, folks. I have a feeling there are going to be other volunteers in other states who are going to find themselves in the same situation...maybe keeping this thing a "big secret" wasn't such a good idea after all...

I don't think sad politically is what you want to be in advance of a big vote, but I think letting smoke be blown up your ass is a bad idea. Even if you were wrong, it never hurts to think of the election as close and turnout as critical.

Now on to the somewhat related part I think someone here might enjoy or benefit from.

I was thinking about all of the debates I've seen over the years, and the first ones I can remember watching live were during the '92 election.

Remembering the Vice Presidential debate that year, I thought Admiral James Stockdale was senile when he made his, "Who am I? Why am I here?" comments. That's certainly how the media portrayed it.

However, a few years ago, I realized he wrote these philosophical papers

AFTER that debate. His mind was very sharp. During the debate, Stockdale had issues with his hearing aid and somehow compensated by trying to make a philosophical rhetorical flourish.

But that's not even the key point of my comment.

I'd really like you to download and read those papers by the heroic Stockdale themselves, available on the US Naval Academy's website. You'll find them on that page above under the heading "Admiral James B. Stockdale". They are entitled "The Stoic Warrior's Triad" and "Master of My Fate".

Stockdale, as you may know, was the highest ranking officer to be a Vietnam POW. When asked in an interview who didn't survive being a Vietnam POW, he said it was the most optimistic prisoners:

"They were the ones who said, 'We're going to be out by Christmas.' And Christmas would come, and Christmas would go. Then they'd say, 'We’re going to be out by Easter.' And Easter would come, and Easter would go. And then Thanksgiving, and then it would be Christmas again. And they died of a broken heart."

Stockdale DID believe in a kind of "Disciplined Optimism", which was a chapter title in one of his books.

This is sometimes called "The Stockdale Paradox" in philosophy and goes like this:

You must confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

Anyway, that's food for thought. I know flat-out optimism is very popular in American culture, but Stockdale drew heavily from Greek philosophy, especially Stoicism and especially from Epictetus. Stoic ideas are more popular in American war colleges than in society writ large because of the enormous and very real dangers and hardships warriors face. As many of you veterans and family members of veterans know all too well.

I'm just going to try to gently suggest that those who aren't as optimistic as you are, who may even seem downright brutal in their analysis of the present situation, are not necessarily an enemy trying to dispirit you. They may be your ally with a different philosophical approach to problems.

And a couple weeks ago, when I was getting ready to vote, I collated an e-mail list, with addresses taken from both the embassy list and my contacts from Internations, a world-wide expat networking site. I sent e-mails out, reminding American citizens to vote, and explaining the procedure. Now, outside active duty military and security contractors, most of the expat community are liberal types--academics, State Department, NGO/Peace Corps--so I was very much surprised by the responses. A few were militantly pro-Obama, but most were kind of, "I don't really like (or know)Romney all that much, but Obama has had four years and hasn't done much. So let's give the other guy a chance." These were responses from expats from Jordan, Turkey, Ukraine, Kurdistan, and Albania.

I am seething over this but I seem to be alone. Part of the reason we have gas supply issues on Long Island is the gas that is here needs to be mixed with ethanol before it can be distributed to retail stations per regulations. No one is willing to wave this restriction. So many here do not have power and depending on generators now not just for normal electric usage but to turn on furnaces.

309 Sadly, we have all mail-in ballot here in WA (something the state did after Christine Fraudoire stole her governorship in 2004). So no poll observations from the NW corner of America. That being said, my girlfriend who voted for O last time, is very excited about voting him out. The beauty of running lots of milesvwith someone is that they are your captive audience. I took advantage of the hours spent running with her, to put some knowledge to her. She works in finance at Microsoft, so losing her Cadillac health plan over Obamacare helped her see the light too.

Yesterday, a friend and I were working out, and she asked who I was voting for Governor. I was able to give her some contrasts between Rob McKenna (our Republican AG who was one of the AG's that sued against Obamacare and our brainless Democrat Representative Jay Inslee). She thanked me afterwards and said she would vote for McKenna.

I'll call my mom before I go to work. She was talking about not voting a few weeks ago. I told hemr to get her skinny butt out to the polls and vote for Romney. She lives in PA, her vote really matters. I will nag her this a.m., she has to vote!!!

380 The last three days all of our firm's paid, professional GOTV has been for Republicans. Romney, some Senate races, and some west coast House races.

All the Dem GOTV went away. Maybe their check bounced.

I early voted on the first day we could in Ohio. My wife is a traditionalist. She was in line at 6:30 this morning with our good friend, next-door neighbors.

I stick by my oft-stated conviction that Romney will win by 7%, we will gain 8-10 House seats, and get to 53 in the Senate. Romney will win Ohio by at least 3.5% and probably closer to 5%. Mandel will win.

There is a great song by a little-known blues band from Massachusetts that broke up years ago called the Radio Kings. The lyric goes something like, "My day of reckoning has finally come, no more won't happen again."

Today is Barack Obama's day of reckoning.

Got there 10 minutes early. They let us in and we stood in line in a room next to the polling area. I was number 32 in line - yeah, I counted; wasn't much else to do - and I finally got to vote. It was pretty busy, though this is a new precinct for me. Last Prez election it was crowded, too, early on Election Day.

I was out the door, heading home by 7:35. So it wasn't bad at all.

Already voting in NJ has become a fiasco. I drove 20miles out of my way from my in-laws house this morning, only to find a closed firehouse with nary a soul to be found. Now, I knew they would have no power but I was under the impression that I could vote via paper ballot or at the very least get direction as to which polling place I should go. Not a single person or fucking sign on the door. Looking into the affidavit voting now.

I'm feeling very disenfranchised right now.

Mrs VIA grew up in this development.
Every available parking place is taken for both polling place.
Cars are parked in every streetside location.
Alleyways are blocked by cars.
Mrs VIA says she has never seen it like this.
The 08 election was nothing like this either.

I just heard the leader of the Independent Hall TEA party on the radio, he said if anyone encounters this situation, to stand their ground if they hold a certificate, but not to be a vigilante. Videotaping or cameras are not allowed at the polls. He gave a hotline number that goes to the state GOP who will dispatch attorneys to deal with the situation.

I was on the phone last nite with a good friend from my city days. He was telling me all the new ways that the city is extorting funds from residents, mainly through taxes and extreme parking regulations. I said I am so glad I moved out of there...there's definitely things I miss about being a city girl. But that city is run by clowns, buffoons, hoodlums, and professional fuckups.

398 I took my dog for a walk downtown to drop off my ballot in the drop box at the county office building. I'm in Seattle, so it's all vote-by-mail and then trust King County Elections (hah!) to count honestly. These drop boxes are big and have "ballot drop box" on them in enormous letters.
Anyway, a man with a heavy south-Asian accent was at the box right before me and asked if he needed to put a stamp on the envelope if he put it in the box. I was so tempted to say "It depends on who you are voting for" but I was nice and just said no.

And as Sophie and I were leaving, another man walked up and asked if this was where you deposited your ballot. Between the silly question and this being King County, but mostly the silly question,I'm sure he was voting for Obama.

The southern half of the county is purple because of Galveston (the Chicago of Texas), but it's turning more red by the day. Anyway, there are a million political signs posted along the sides of the roads. Most of these are for local races, a bunch encouraging you to vote straight ticket Republican, and quite a few Romney signs. Until this morning, I had not seen the first Obama roadside sign. That all changed last night. Someone had taken an Obama sign and attached it to the top of a Romney sign along with a "STOP" above Romney's name. What a microcosm of today's Democrats. Instead of having their own stand or post, they have to take advantage of their opponent's property.

546 Am I Blue?; Am I Blue?....well actually No, I'm not blue at all, but the state I live in (CA) sure as hell is blue. I sympathize with the frustration of other morons and moronettes who live in solid blue states like NY. I feel that as long as I live here I'm going to be stuck on the sidelines while the real excitement of the game goes on. Nevertheless, my wife and I have once again voted the straight Republican ticket. Even if it doesn't make any difference to this leftist hell hole (with nice weather) that I live in, it's nice to know that I was a part of the landslide that's going to kick Obama out of office.

BTW; when I was growing up in Canada, red was always associated with socialism/communism. How did the Republican party come to be lumbered with the color red on the electoral map?

460I voted absentee in Creek County, Oklahoma. There's no question it will go R. In Cape Town, South Africa today at a refinery. There's some interest in the election, as you would expect from a Chevron plant.

Hey, I grew up in Creek county OK.
No doubt about our state going for RR.

560 Just a quick note from here in Haverhill, MA (if anybody's still reading) - walked to the polls. No real lines, but a lot of people coming and going, very steady voting. And everyone with a real quick step, as though they can't wait to get the job done. Heard Brown and Warren both being interviewed on the radio - he's hoarse and upbeat, she's slow and tired andwent into some tearjerker story about how she still remembers being 5 years old and sitting at her mother's feet while mom worked as a poll watcher. I'd have given a week's pay if the reporter had asked "was this before or after she told you you were an Indian?" but no luck.

As I said earlier, can't watch the results. I'm too anxious. Anyway, I can watch Chrissy Matthews' head explode and Madcow foam at the mouth at my leisure for the next four years. I'm going back to work on my book. See you all tomorrow.

562 I could have voted twice this morning if I were dishonest. The process is supposed to be that you check in showing your ID and the lady hands you a slip showing which ballot you get. This morning they were a little disorganized. The woman handed me my voting slip before she checked my registration. I could have voted then come back later and gotten another ballot the correct way. I would never do that. t also does hurt that most of the ladies that work my polling place know me.

564 I just voted. Got there 20-25 min early. In and out in 7 min. but only because I'm so pushy. Poll workers always act like they are deer in the headlights. It was crowded but not as bad as 2008.

GOOD MORNING! Didn’t make it to the polling place before 7am after all, but we were in the first less-than-twenty.

1972, Nixon running for re-election. I wasn’t 21, but they had given me the vote. I was living in Little Rock and voted absentee. I asked my Republican campaigning aunt for advice on the candidates and she, of course, only said vote straight Republican party. There was no third-party candidate on my ballot then, IIRC. I was not happy with Dick and how his “secret plan to end Viet Nam” had gone, among other things. I sure wasn’t pro-McGovern. But in my state, certain things are sure, like a Republican win for Nixon 1972. So I voted for McGovern just to be a tiny protest against Nixon’s failures.

In the ensuing decades, I voted many times like that, as frequently as I could for the Libertarian Party candidate, partly on small-L libertarian principles, partly so a viable third party could stay on the state ballot (although they lost that privilege years ago), partly to protest the two major parties, even if I favored one of them. I’ve probably voted “against” far more often than I’ve voted for. *cough* McCain *cough.* With rare exceptions, I’ve been able to say, don’t blame me, I voted for the other guy.

Even though I once voted for the woman who said the government had planted a radio chip in her head, I do take the vote deadly seriously. Always, always, we looked at the individual candidates as closely as time permitted. I’ve voted for Democrats when the Republican was just too incompetent-seeming.

This year, for the first time for either of us, both the mrs and I voted straight-party. I hope Aunt Pat is looking down from Heaven and smiling that, after four decades, I’ve finally taken her advice.

Also, got out and voted R/R in Gainesville, GA this morning. Didn't have to wait in line at all, but I don't think there is much chance of this part of GA going for Obama.

Anecdotal evidence, I've seen exactly ONE Obama/Biden yard sign...it was small and appeared at the end of last week.
