Why Romney Won, And Why His Victory Should Have Been Obvious Before the Election

Bob Krumm writes a column as a retrospective, from after the election, looking back at all the reasons why Romney won -- and why this outcome should not have taken people by surprise.

It's good.

Like everyone is now saying, someone is going to be shocked on election night. Following the shock, everyone will say, "Of course, it was so obvious."

If Obama wins, the obvious thing will be that he led in most swing-state polls. Of course he won.

But if Romney wins, it will also be an of course situation -- good Lord, he was winning independents by twenty-two (!!!) hot damn points. Good Lord, the fundamentals were always against him -- no president has been reelected with a huge 7.9% unemployment rate (and the real rate is quite a bit higher than that, at 18% or so).

Good Lord, was he really thinking he could overcome these hurdles by ginning up enthusiasm among young voters (who are not in fact enthusiastic) and black voters (who are suffering an outright depression in black employment?)

Oh: He lays out five different scenarios, one of which is "Nate Silver Is right" (Obama wins) and "The RCP average is right" (Obama wins, very narrowly).

Other scenarios feature Romney winning.

Prediction: Good guys win 51%-48%, 309-229. We win OH, PA, WI, and NH; we lose IA and NV.
And if anyone is STILL eeyorish about Ohio, go read Barone's analysis again, because it is exactly the sense I get from having lived my entire life in this state. The conservative voters that turned out in 2004, but didn't in 2008, are amped up more than I have ever seen.
In fact, I think Barone is being a little too cautious. The early voting numbers are so strong in our favor that not even Axlerod can refute them. The mythical OfA registration GOTV effort is all hype--there are 300,000 FEWER registered voters in Ohio today than in 2008, and60% of those are from Dem stronghold Cuyahoga County. Early-voting unaffiliated voters are going to have to break to SCOAMF by 2:1 for this thing to be close.

There is no such thing as a useless vote. Every single vote in the popular vote, even if it doesn't result in electoral victory, makes this election a mandate that cuts both ways: support of Romney/Ryan and refutation of the incumbent.

I think we're going to see a LOT of hard blue states go ever so slightly purple this year thanks to the popular vote.

Most people try ding it the RIGHT WAY from the start, and only get aggressive when there's no other way to survive. They thought they could bully and harass people into doing what they wanted and, when it didn't work, ONLY THEN did it occur to them to play nice.

Let us all be grateful for a land so

As we

God bless America, land that I love Stand beside her and guide her Through the night with a light from

Please pray for
our country today and tomorrow. The power of prayer is like no other
force:Heavenly Father, please bless our nation. I pray
that You will restore our country to your integrity and goodness through godly
leaders who extoll their faith through their actions and words. I pray that
our vote tomorrow will raise the standard for morality in this country, lest
we never forget our founding principles. Thank you for the right to vote, and let us never
forget that privilege and all the abundant blessings you have given us in a
free country. I pray that Christians and Jews will seek this privilege wisely
tomorrow, casting their vote to protect the unborn, the elderly, the disabled,
our military, our freedoms, our children and future generations of free
Americans. I pray America will always be a country to extend her hand to those
in need, to protect and assist those who need our help. May there be a force of righteousness in this
prayer that will effect every citizen and every element of government in our
country, sending a powerful message to our elected leaders and the world of
who we are and the values we stand for. These values have always been with us,
and forgive us for taking them for granted.I pray the United States of America will continue
to be a beacon of light on the hill for the rest of the world. Please restore
our place as the land of freedom and economic prosperity through new
leadership. Dear Lord, please protect and bless our military in harm's way, as
we owe them our eternal thanks for their sacrifice. Please give them a
Commander in Chief who will protect them and serve them with honor.

I ask for protection, safety and
strength for those we vote for tomorrow.Dear Lord, please continue to protect and bless our
country, and may we please have one more chance to change the course of
history with our vote tomorrow. Thank you for all you have given us. In Thy
name, Amen.

The time has come to turn to God and reassert our
trust in Him for the healing of America...Our country is in need of and ready
for a spiritual renewal.

so, worst worst case can still have obama 300+ if the polls are accurate and it's 2008 all over again with one or two defections.

But really, we get FL,NC,VA,OH,NH at the least. WI,MN,MI,IA,CO,OR will be heartbreaker losses.boom. 270 for romney.

Once the midwest barrier breaks, MI,WI,MN,CO: R315

There's already evidence in various states that there are efforts in that direction (the latest in Iowa, cf. Trinko at the Corner). A Chicago admin will not go gently into that good night; they will commit fraud upon fraud against the dying of their might.

We will beat them, anyway. (GOTV, GOTV, GOTV!) The Wisconsin election was a prelude. Just means that whatever the margin of Romney's victory is, we know it would have been even more crushing, but for fraud.

This is something that's interested me for a while. I've mentioned it before, but the Dems have managed to create for themselves a party that's almost entirely comprised of fringe elements. They prostrate themselves at the feet of radicals because, as of right now, radicals make up the most active, vocal sections of their party, and there are a lot of them.

But what the Dems don't realize is that the fringe whackjobs ARE NOT their base. Their base is still made up of blue collar Ma and Pa Kettle Democrats. They might not be loud and in-your-face, but they're still the base. And what they're hearing from Obama and his ilk isn't what they want to hear from their party. What they're hearing from Romney is much closer to what they thought the Democrat party stood for. Like Ryan said during the VP debate, Romney/Ryan are a helluva lot closer to being JFK than Obama/Biden.

So not only is Romney appealing to his own base, and to the fringier elements of the Republican/conservative electorate (with the exception of Gary Johnson and Nor Luap supporters), but he's also siphoning away members of the DEMOCRAT base. Not their fringe -- their base. Those are the only voters who continue to give the Dem party any legitimacy, and they're going to start moving towards becoming Republicans with this election. Mark my words.

2) Chick-fil-A barometer this year. What has changed? Nothing.

Don't know where you saw Drudge leak the final Gallup poll but someone on BusinessWeek say it's 49-48 Romney but the Twitter buzz is that Romney has the momentum going into Election day with O's hurricane bump over.

I read that history shows the incumbent usually ends up 1% higher than his final RCP number. That would be O at 48-49 tomorrow (not accounting at all for the D+ skews)

Ras says 49-47, which is pretty close when you consider that a bad day for Romney rolled off and a good day came on. By tomorrow morning, I think Ras will have it 50-47. I'm guessing that, for actual votes, Romney rounds down to 51 and Barry rounds up to 48 (there'll be about 1.5% third-party votes).

But then he would have been a totally different person. Benghazi happened because Barky is who he is. The coverup happened because he is who he is. There is no possibility of Barky having handled any of this differently because ... he is who he is. He could not have moderated anything during his criminal tenure because he never intended for anything different than what he has done (though he did fantasize about having inflicted an even greater blow against America, even as he has done so much damage to our nation that we might well not be able to recover from it).

All of these fantasies about "what if Barky had acted like a halfway sentient person ..." skip over the sad truth that Barky could not have done anything differently or he would be a totally different person. You can't wonder if a revenge-seeking prick with an 84 IQ had not sought revenge or had an IQ north of 90. It was just never a possibility.

I just bookmarked that photo.

Our fighting men and women fight, as Romney would say, for love of country, not for revenge. It's their job and, at the end of the day, they are still good and decent and honorable, unlike those we fight against. They fight the enemy, seeing horrific things along the way, and yet still maintain the compassion to care for one of God's smaller creatures and the vulnerability to seek solace in the comfort of small, furry things.
