Nanny Bloomers: We Don't Want the National Guard Keeping Order in New York City Because We Don't Want Those Extra Icky Guns
A few days ago Kathleen Parker, alleged by the media to be conservative-leaning and alleged by me to be an idiot, cooed at the prospect of Michael Bloomberg running for president.
If nothing else, this year has brought us the end of the long-threatened Michael Bloomberg presidential candidacy, and thankfully (hopefully!) the last term of Mayor for Life.You know what's worse than highly-trained, highly-disciplined men with guns? Looters and criminals of opportunity, and citizens getting panicky about looters and criminals of opportunity.
Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state. “We don’t need it,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”
When night falls in the Rockaways, the hoods come out. Ever since Sandy strafed the Queens peninsula and tore up the boardwalk, it’s become an often lawless place where cops are even scarcer than electrical power and food. Locals say they are arming themselves with guns, baseball bats, booby traps — even a bow and arrow — to defend against looters. ... “We booby-trapped our door and keep a baseball bat beside our bed,” said Danielle Harris, 34, rummaging through donated supplies as children rode scooters along half-block chunk of the boardwalk that had marooned into the middle of Beach 91st St. “We heard gunshots for three nights in a row,” said Harris, who believed they came from the nearby housing projects. Carly Ruggieri, 27, who lives in water-damaged house on the block, said she barricades her door with a bed frame. “There have been people in power department uniforms knocking on doors and asking if they’re okay, but at midnight.” And another local surfer said he has knives, a machete and a bow and arrow on the ready. Gunshots and slow-rolling cars have become a common fixture of the night since Hurricane Sandy. “I would take a looter with a boa [sic]. If I felt threatened I would definitely use it,” said Keone Singlehurst, 42. “Its like the Wild West. A borderline lawless situation.”I don't mind armed citizens, but panicky armed citizens often produce less-than-optimal outcomes. There might be a little less panic -- and also, a little less crime and looting -- if there were a stronger presence of order in the stricken areas. Bloomberg is so anti-gun he's afraid of national guardsmen -- citizen-soldiers who have at least a basic-level security clearance -- toting firearms. City-dwellers may finally be understanding what rural folks say -- when danger is seconds away, it does you little good if the police are 10-15 minutes away.

I was wrong for how I acted yesterday. As my g/f says, I tend to be too much of a pessimist. I know, not a great way to go through life. In this case, Ive largely held strong to the idea that Romney could win, but did let negative things I hear/read in media affect me a bit much. I guess part of it is I didnt want to be too hopeful and then have a big let down on Tuesday.
But its not good to be that way. This is too important and what purpose does it serve to be negative. Certainly it isnt helpful to those who post here either. So I do offer my apologies for yesterday. All in all, I am indeed much more hopeful and feel good about the results Tuesday. There are millions and millions that believe Obama must be beaten, and plenty that fell for his bs in 2008 that have woken up.

Some idiot didn't understand timezones, and set the server to local time instead of zulu time. Pixy, being from Oz, got the word about the daylight time change late, but fixed the local time offset manually.
Then some server farm retard advanced the server's time.
Wheee ....
( proper procedure is to set server time to zulu time ... and to have your program check what the local offset is supposed to be before putting a timestamp on anything. That way everything just works. )

The early vote is overrepresented in the polling and many are finding ESPECIALLY SurveyUSA, that over 95% of their polled voters are likely voters. Only possible in a state like Washington where we get 90% turnout rates, but nationally it is 60-80%.
Too loose voting screens and too much EV and you have a poll skewed to the democrats. People are going to be shocked on Tuesday.

But in all this exciting fine tuning, nobody seems to have bothered to think about the much greater task of keeping floodwaters out of the subway system. Admittedly, getting public support and finding the money for flood protection would be hard, but it is exactly that kind of hard job that governments are supposed to do. Leadership is getting the important things done, not looking busy on secondary tasks while the real needs of the city go quietly unmet.

I have it on very good authority (my Mama in Mississippi) who has her own Mississippi Power dude she has befriended through others, because that is how we roll, state that Mississippi crews were in place days before the storm and are still in Maryland somewhere.
This is how hurricanes are run, y'all. Our neighbors and others states rush to the state line, or just out of harms way, and rush in. We, in turn, welcome them, chat them up like nobody's bidness, befriend them, know where they are from, and give them iced co-cola's and pound cake. Add to that the fact that the infrastructure , utility lines--hell the trees have never seen wind and weather like this before.

I was almost dehydrated and delirious two weeks ago in Daytona Beach, but I was a happy old supermodel during the two hours home (not counting the insanity of park and ride and, I am pretty darn sure, a union conspiracy amongst the lame bus drivers to the Speedway).
Total time gone from home: 9 hours. Commute total: 4 hours. Standing in line: 1 hour. Standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands: 3 hours. Feeling afterwards: Priceless.

I was in Lowe's yesterday buying leaf bags and saw one of those on display. It looks verrrry tempting. Will cost a few grand to buy it and have it installed, but I can afford it. I took a brochure.
The thing I'm most concerned about is how to keep it from getting stolen. I know that generator theft is not a problem at present, but it will be in the not-too-distant future.

Yeah Kent State. The rioting students were disobeying a no protest order
from the campus IIRC. Were tossing things at the Guard unit and then
managed to trap the unit against a fence with nowhere to go. And the
Guard had to fight their way out.
Didn't they do some audio analysis in the last year or two and confirm what the LT in charge of the Guardsmen claimed at the time, that there were shots fired and he acted to defend himself?

Rickl, hide the generator if you can. If its a propane unit pour a concrete base with J-bolts set in the concrete. And then torque the generator base to the J-bolts. Still might want to build a screening wall or tall shrubs to hide it.

Bill was one of my daily reads for a long time. He was also a central player in the Rathergate fiasco and once even managed to snatch up a Bob Schieffer interview by ambushing him in a parking lot.
Near the end he lost his sense of humor and had a bit of a thin skin, but I wish his site were still around.

Anyway, Just thought you'd like to know two things.
1. The Dem GOTV calls are desperate, hectoring, pleading scripts basically trying to scare and/or guilt Dem base supporters into getting off their lazy asses. The R GOTV calls are very basic, "please vote for Romney, thanks!" and "Don't forget to vote for Romney, thanks!" type scripts.
2. The reaction from the registered Dems called and the registered Rs called is night and day. Cursing, hang-ups, and indifference from Dems. Upbeat, happy, and encouraging from the Rs. Plenty of folks telling our interviewers to "go get 'em" and "thanks for the work you do" from the Rs called.
This isn't going to be close on Tuesday.

They were put into an extremely volatile situation and were backed into a corner. The Leftists lit the fuse. There should have been a bigger State Police/County Police presence to arrest and detain, instead of intimidate. If I have a clip (M-1 Garand) of 8 rounds locked and loaded and I hear a gun shot from the area of incidence, I probably open fire, also. The agitators knew the Guard did not want to open fire. The deaths are on their hands, but that was not in keeping with the Narrative®.

After Katrina we had curfew and National Guard paroling everywhere...
Nobody had issues with it at all.
Matter of fact they were welcomed with open arms..
We had very few incidents in retrospect...Don't get me wrong we had some but for the most part very safe and orderly.

After 9/11 and the war in Iraq I would horrify husband/sons by thanking troops. I went up to a Marine in full dress blues in an Atlanta airport restaurant and gave him money "for a beer." I don't think this was proper at all, but I meant well. I am sure he thought I was insane at the time. I worry, now, that he was escorting a Marine home. Being the daughter of a WWII Marine, I just saw "MARINE" and thus made a fool of myself. Oh, well. A lot of them have learned not to make eye contact with me, but I thank them anyway.
On Delta and Southwest, can't say for other airlines as I don't fly them, they ask for a round of applause for our troops on planes. Sometimes they ask for passengers to let them get off plane first so they can make connections. I will never forget one soldier, who was waiting like a gentleman for me to pass in the aisle as we left and I told him thank you for his service. He looked me square in the eye and said, "No, ma'am, I thank YOU." I then had to rush by in blurry tears.
For heaven's sake, let's get these men a real Commander in Chief. Pray.

This warning can't be voiced too often.
The ethanol shit that the feds are forcing refineries to blend into gasoline in order to allegedly be "green" make that gasoline SERIOUSLY BAD NEWS for carbureted small engines. Such as the ones on small generators.
The gasoline with ethanol will go bad when stored much faster than gas used to. And the ethanol is hygroscopic. It'll pull moisture out of the air. Which means that the gasoline the ethanol is in will then rust your small engine's fuel system from the inside, thanks to that water.
Putting fuel stabilizer in the gas will help a little. But really, you should not count on storing modern gasoline for more than about a month or two. And you should always, always, always drain your generator's tank to the last drop and allow the carb to run bone dry before storing the genny.

That explanation has been shown as false SO many times. Why would it be that independents are ex Republicans when in 2010 the electorate was even or R+1? Shouldn't THAT have been the election where the independent vote would have gone UP?? That was the HEIGHT of the Tea Party influence and if that was true, it would have been shown in the polling. It never happened.
Didn't happen then and its not happening now. There is systemic rot in the polling organizations now and they cannot be trusted.

The Republicans simply did not turn out in 2008. Some of those that did, came out as Independents, but NOT to the extent that would matter. Having less Republican turnout added to the percentage of Dems and Indies in 2008. If you look at Ohio, you can see in 2008 McCain got nearly 200,000 votes LESS than George Bush did in 2004. Obama actually got LESS than John Kerry did in 2004.
The DRI in 2008 was screwed up BECAUSE Republicans did not show up.

ANECDOTAL PHILLY/PA ANALYSIS:
First off, people don't give much of a fuck about Christie in Philly. If he had come here and campaigned w/ Romney, it would have been nice but not a game-changer...the reverse (the optics w/ Obama) is also true. Helped O, but not nearly decisive.
Didn't go to the rally today because it said it had "airport-level security" and I was hoping it would have been in Philly...but having heard it went well does mean something.
Suburban Rs outside of Philly are the unicorn sort that we often hear of, but never show up..."fiscal conservative, social liberal, independent". But this is the one election where the legend of how a Republican should win may be true. Because I think this R&R ticket will work w/ them.
Again this is anecdotal, but I am not the sort to say we'll win if I think we'll lose...I just won't say anything...I really think we've got a better than 50/50 shot in PA.
It's not so much that you have to actually be a milquetoast politician here...just come off like one (a bit). For example, Casey jr is a liberal, but comes across like a moderate...so does Toomey.
And so do R&R. There's just sort of an instinct you get when you know an area well, that's hard to describe to outsiders. But I'm telling you, as a Philly resident, R&R is a ticket that can truly work here.
As to Sandy's effect? In the anecdotal sense? It's hard to say. I definitely don't think it will send people in this area rushing back to O saying "we need government". But could help him in the sense that he got on a more positive message and seemed more bi-partisan.
On the other hand, if your shore house is underwater, and FEMA isn't great are you more likely to vote or not? And for who? Remember, lower turnout screws Ds in this area.
I can probably see the people angry at O wanting to make the effort to vote, more than the ones who're just OK w/ him (but not thrilled) wanting to.
Something also very important...In Pennsylvania WE HAVE NO EARLY VOTING.
90%+ will vote on Election Day. I've gotta think that helps us. In that sense Sandy's positive optics for O, may result in a wash w/ the fact that Sandy has made it more difficult for Ds to vote...and we know how they like to early vote.
NATIONAL PHILLY/PA ANALYSIS:
From what I've read PA has been trending Red for close to 20 years. Very close elections in 2000 and 2004. Only Philly's incredible turnout has stopped that (Bush lost by about 2% in 2004).
McCain was tied until Wall St collapsed. Now you've got a perfect Republican PA ticket w/ R&R (I can assure you these two guys will play here) and a failed semi-radical liberal in O (does not play in PA).
Even more, the Senate race is close...I think those numbers are less prejudiced than the Presidential ones...because R&R have even an even better chance of winning than Smith does (PA people are boring enough to like one R one D in the Senate...which doesn't mean I don't think Smith can win, only that I think R&R can win even more).
Basically it's this: If Philly doesn't give incredible turnout to O, then the odds are a R&R win. It doesn't take a miracle. Just Math (to paraphrase one of O's more patronizing insults to Republicans).
This was a state Ds only won by 2% in 2004, w/ a stronger D candidate in PA terms (Kerry's calm manner, anti-war stance) and a weaker R in PA terms candidate (Texas drawl, seemed like a war monger).
The Ds never thought it would come down to PA, so they never poisoned the airwaves. Don't watch a ton of TV, but I can tell you (I'm in Philly) I've seen few ads for O.
So we're gonna see if they can mach the incredible D turnout of 2004 and 08 in Philly. Or they lose.
But don't let anyone tell you this is a "miracle reach". He's got as good a chance here (in PA) as he does in OH or WI. Or MI or IA or NH. Or MN.
And possibly better than all of those.
PS - I hear the Redskins and Giants lost (defeated by the Steelers), and this helps the Republican candidate, according to magical-thinking. That's great. But it's also great because the Giants and Redskins suck. LOL

After the 1999 OKC monster tornado, the city already had a clean-up plan in action and power people on station by the time FEMA even showed up. Most of the work was done by private companies and the area actually started the phase of rebuilding within two weeks of the storm.
Plus, everyone in OKC chipped in, offering any help where help was needed.
OK is a "Right to Work" state. It made all the difference in the world.

May 3rd. I"ll never forget it. We were at that gas station on 44, in Stroud, the one by the McDonalds?
The cinderblock walls were breathing in and out, and we didn't even get the F5/6. It flipped two 18 wheelers right over the building, into the McDonalds parking lot. I kept hearing this huge thumping going on, and couldn't imagine what it was...turns out ot was the vending machines. Kept feeling water hit my face and was grossed out cuz I thought it was toilet water (we were in the ladies room) turns out the roof was gone above us.
By far the worst one I have been in.

The residential parts of NYC are very old too. Even if you're good from the xformer through the laterals and down into a meter, there's a good chance the service conductors into the basement are ancient cracked cloth/rubber insulated shit going into an equally ancient panel.
A dunking in salt water ain't gonna improve the tripping ability of those old Zinsco and Federal Pacific breakers.
A lot of the service entrance cable and panel lugs are aluminum too, even if the busses are copper. Al and salt water will react badly. There's a huge amount of premise checking and replacement that needs to be done before a joint could be safely turned back on. At a minimum, any dunked breakers need to be tossed.

We lose 1000 WWII men a day. My Daddy, a Marine, and my hero, served 30 months in the South Pacific including Peleliu (1st Marine, second wave onto island). He died almost four years ago and I miss him daily. I go completely nuts over those men who served. At the World War Two Museum in NOLA, or the monument in DC, I am a very busy girl.
You are correct about Vietnam Veterans. And our current military...I am not sure where we find such good men and women. This may be why I am currently certifiably insane about Benghazi.

And we weren't anywhere near the worst part of it. I kept going outside before it hit to stand with my aunt, who is a chain smoker, and the wind was so strong an hour before the tornado even got to us that I was amusing myself by standing with my back up against the wall and shimmy-ing up it. Pushed my way half way up to the roof the last time we went out. Then all of a sudden, nothing. No wind, no rain. A little old man shoved me and my aunt in the door and said this is IT.
And sure enough....we barely made it to the ladies room when it hit.

This warning can't be voiced too often.
The ethanol shit that the feds are forcing refineries to blend into gasoline in order to allegedly be "green" make that gasoline SERIOUSLY BAD NEWS for carbureted small engines. Such as the ones on small generators.
The gasoline with ethanol will go bad when stored much faster than gas used to. And the ethanol is hygroscopic. It'll pull moisture out of the air. Which means that the gasoline the ethanol is in will then rust your small engine's fuel system from the inside, thanks to that water.
Putting fuel stabilizer in the gas will help a little. But really, you should not count on storing modern gasoline for more than about a month or two. We'd been watching it come together from across town.
And watching it on local channels, with the storm trackers filming those three smaller funnels that came together...to form the mile-wide monster F5.
The Weather Channel was showing "Fair w/25% Chance of Showers", on the local forecast.
We only had a few trees uprooted.
The poor folks in the path of that thing were devastated.

Thank God for men like your Dad and mine; truly, the greatest generation. I don't know if America knows how blessed we are because of the men who are/were the backbone of this great nation. My Dad, US NAVY, and my hero died 9 months ago. A void nothing and no one can ever fill. I miss him more and more, so I work on continuing their effort, posting every scrap of info on Benghazi and getting SCOAMF out of OUR WH.
I see a hint of some of the kind of men our dads were made of here quite often, that's why I keep coming back.

Dad always wondered why I loved history, particularly WWII. But it just fascinated me. Plus the family who had served, from my grandfather to my Dad to cousins. So I have a strong attachment to military stuff. Even served in the guard, one way to pay for college without incurring debt. Plus got to see Germany, Italy, and parts of South America.

We have a brand around the Mid Atlantic called "Pure" and they sell ethanol free gas. It's about 10% more expensive than the ethanol gas, but I get about 15% better gas mileage, so it is actually cheaper than the ethanol gas. I also had to get a new carb for my generator this summer when the derecheo hit Virginia and my generator wouldn't start because of the damn ethanol fuel screwing it up. Now, I just use that sweet ethanol free gas in my generator.

That's the estimate. Dr. Fujita thought that winds on earth could only max out at 318 mph. I asked Gary England at a charity function about 3-4 years later about that and he just smiled and shrugged and said that what Dr. Fujita said was just a theory. He seems to think it was much higher also.

For what it's worth, quality modern compound bows, in the 50-70lb max draw range (legal for deer hunting), are under 40 inches axle-to-axle, newer ones even as short at 32 inches, as the newer designs have the limbs pointing almost straight back.
As an urban weapon, they are quite practical and lethal up to 200 yards, assuming the archer (you) have developed the muscles to draw the bow and the skill to hit a 15" x 20" target at that range. 100 yards is a much likelier maximum range, with 50 yards being a practical maximum range. Plan on 20-50 yards.
The rate of fire is much higher than a crossbow, provided the archer (you) have trained enough. There was a video here on Ace, about a year ago, showing a Russian girl shooting an arrow every 3-5 seconds at what looked to be a 25-meter target. Her bow was probably 20lb or so, but a properly sharpened broadhead would make an ugly wound all the way through anyone less than 12" thick. The arrow would likely still stay IN the target, but that's a bonus.
The shock value, to the target and to the co-targets, should not be underestimated: almost no sound, then blood everywhere and lots of pain and screaming ... and both will last for at least a few minutes. Of course, the co-targets will desire greatly to see what the archer's (your) insides look like, and study them in detail, so the archer (you) must be prepared ...

He also did everything---everything---as a provider first, thinking of himself second. I am his only daughter, was spoiled silly, and encouraged in my craziness by him from birth. However, once the crisis is over, I tend to fall apart.
They opened 44 a few hours after the storm passed and we got about 5 miles down the road and a little gust of wind blew up and I almost got hysterical. It was pitch black, couldn't see a thing, and I about lost it.

When Florida's call for Gore was pulled and then awarded to Bush, he told Fox News that it was too early even though Bush had a 100K vote lead with 90% of the votes in, especially if it was a couple of counties and then listed several of the precincts. It's about 50 miles, more or less....but Tammy, OKC is huge and sprawls like an octopus in all directions, over about 6 counties.
But from the NE quadrant of OKC, Stroud is about 50 miles.
And yeah....there were somewind gauges that actually did break.
The 'last shown reading' they said, was at 360 mph.

Wow. The mental hospital was still there when I was growing up, Shep Pratt, and we use to play on their land. There, of course, was no beltway or any damn thing else. Cheri, when I was in jr high my mom and a guy that I played catch with every day's dad worked at the VA hospital in Topeka. We volunteered three summers in the collective therapy gym playing ping pong and basketball etc with the patients.
It really gave you a feel for how much some gave for us.

Whatever you buy, get a conversion unit in .22lr or a "clone" gun in the same caliber so you can practice with it a LOT cheaply.
The fact is, so long as the gun you pick is reliable (and pretty much all revolvers or military style autos are, nowadays), your proficiency with it is going to matter FAR more than what model or even caliber.

Agreed. Maybe Letterman felt he had to explain it-- translate it-- soften it, for his liberal audience. (So it's not that Matthews is a fucktard anyone would love to see cry, it's that he's "histrionic.")
Still, good joke. Between this and Letterman's comment to Maddow (that Obama was dishonest about what Romney said on GM bankruptcy), I'm thinking Letterman's lost some of those Obama tingles. Cutting down on the koolaid. Even if he almost certainly voting for Obama.
Maybe he's sensing that Leno is capitalizing on at least occasional Obama jokes, and benefitting from that, and Letterman belatedly realizes he should give him some competition on the non-Obama-bootlicking front (with respect to an audience that is not composed solely of MSNBC-Obama fanboys).

And my Daddy, God rest his soul, was a good man, but he probably shouldn't have ever got married. He and his first wife got married when they were 14 ( did I mention we are stereotypical hillbillies?) and he had 3 kids by the time he was 18. He loved them dearly, but the marriage didn't work out. He then met and married my mama, but he missed his kids horribly. I always understood that and never felt slighted; he visited us a lot and I was surrounded by love all around, so I don't think I ever really felt the loss.

That 45 did feel real good, no question about it. Problem was the recoil on it had me missing the target low anticipating what was coming. Now, I never really shot much other than rifles a couple times, so I want to keep practicing with my friends 45. So does my lady. Mostly because it's just damn awesome. Not sure it's the right one to own though.
I'm thinking the 38 might be the best fit, and it would be much cheaper to keep practicing with, right? And we could purchase either 38's or 357's with that?

Mourdock (whom I worked with back in the 70's) may pull it out. My sister, a very moderate GOP voter, wasn't going to vote for him until the flap started. Then she got mad at the dem ads which were lying about him, so she went ahead and voted straight GOP.
I miss my dad, too. He died 16 years ago. Vet of WWII, North Africa and Italy. Two Bronze stars. Came home and raised his family. He was a yellow dog democrat who was thrilled Clinton won (and never saw the Monica stuff). He would vote for Romney today.

I disagree with him on abortion (I was fervently pro-life until I changed position about a year ago), but it is so obvious that he had a different, and principled, point than the one he was slurred with having. Even McCain sickened me for calling on Mourdock for apologizing. He didn't do anything wrong. He expressed a classic and philosophically defensible pro-life position, one I also held and expressed for most of my life.
Further, he seems like a nice guy.
So beyond him just being a Republican (and I don't know much more about him than this blowup over his answer), he actually increased my estimation of him by his answer and handling of it.
I disagree with the guy. But it was an honest, principled answer.

I do have a wood-burning fireplace (and yes, it can
be said that the smoke and smell from the chimney would do the same
thing) and a propane heater, but for light I'm going to use oil lamps.
May I throw in an idea that came up Saturday at our monthly Preparedness Breakfast. For interior light if TSHTF there are several parameters. Fuel consumption, fire risk, observability from the outside, and light levels amongst others. If there are Morlocks about, you don't want to be too bright inside and draw attention; just enough to get around with an occasional higher intensity task lighting.
Around here [Colorado] in any hardware or home supply store they have solar cell yard lights that you just stick in the ground. The sun charges the batteries during the day, the batteries run for several hours at night. Charge them outside during the day [make a holder out of a cardboard box with holes punched out to stick the stakes in]. Put 2-3 of them in each room at night. They will give enough light to navigate by, and are not bright enough to attract a lot of attention outside; especially if you are careful about windows and placement. For task lighting, there are versions of the same light with an aimable spotlight that is bright enough for task lighting, including reading. The spotlights generally have an on-off switch. Cost: $3-5 each. Charge each day, outside if possible, through a window if not.
No, they don't last all night. But if TSHTF, you are going to be going to a diurnal schedule anyway. No external fuel required, no fire risk, easy to store till needed.Hope this helps somebody.Subotai Bahadur
