There is a big rally outside of Philly tonight (tonight?).

131 One thing about Romney has been growing on me...he makes his plans and plays his strategy. He does not suckered into stuff. I think this bodes very well for a president - not to be sucked into the media's game and also to plan and execute. I think a lot of politicians, GOP included, tend to just roll with punches and react too much.

I hope Romney will have a kick ass plan and strategy for his first 100 days and I bet he delivers the goods. He may not be the most "conservative" candidate but I suspect he will deliver on his agenda - that's important.

-------

--------

Well, crowds have been embarrassingly small in recent days.
The crowd last night, in Ohio...was pathetic.
They even had the people behind Barky, evenly-spaced, with spaces between them...to try to hide how few there were.

So it wouldn't surprise me if there were a mostly empty auditorium.

166 The high quality of the Romney campaign has been a pleasure to watch. I'm sure all of us can find ways to nit pick, but overall I think we can all agree that it has been well run overall. Refreshing, given the usual buffoonery of Republican campaigns. Thus, we can have hope of victory on Tuesday.

Now that it seems there is some possibility of victory, my other hope goes beyond Tuesday. I hope that someone (preferably many someones)is made to pay for the crimes that have been committedover the last 4 years. Someone has to answer for all this.Putting them out of power for a while, sending them back to lurk in the shadows, is not enough. They must be dragged through the courts, ruined, bankrupted, anddisgraced. It'sa greaterror that we do not punish this kind ofcorruption with death. Whatever suffering can be legally inflicted on these trash should be visited upon them without mercy.

I just realized, earlier today, that this will be the very first time in my life (and I'm not that young) when I've actually been voting *FOR* a President, and not *AGAINST* the other guy.

I actually like and respect Mitt Romney. I'm certain there will be times I'm infuriated by some policy he's embraced, or some fight he's chosen not to fight, but I really believe he's going to be a very good President, with the potential to be one of the greats -- in part because he'd disagree with that last sentiment.

couldn't get the link to post--here's the article from this morning's Cleveland Plain Dealer, that Dem rag.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Legendary performer Stevie Wonder this morning expressed his love for Cleveland during a get-out-the-vote rally at Cleveland State University.
His love went largely unrequited.
Fewer than 200 people showed up to watch Wonder perform a handful of his hits at the early voting event in support of President Barack Obama.
Most of the people had learned of the event just hours before the 9:30 a.m. start time. Some just happened to be in the area and followed the live music.
Campaign volunteer Ken Johnson asked who in the crowd had voted early before introducing Wonder.
Nearly every hand went up.
Wonder took the stage at about 10:30 a.m.
"I do a song. You go vote. You come back. We do some more music," he said before opening with "Sir Duke."
No one left to vote after the first -- or any -- song.
A shuttle meant to take voters to the nearby Cuyahoga County Board of Elections left empty after Wonder's final song, "Superstition."
Obama for America Ohio, which hosted the rally, informed its nearly 34,000 followers on Twitter about the event around 10 a.m.
"Perhaps it wasn't advertised properly, but the people who are here are fired up," said Bill Milhoan, of Mentor.
Milhoan, who said he supports Obama, was one of the few people in the crowd who have not already voted.
"It would be disingenuous to say I am here because of Obama," he said. "How do you pass up a chance to see Stevie Wonder?"

294 Okay went and looked it up--

Conducted since 1948, Field Poll surveys have a strong rate of accuracy as only four out of the last 52 races for president, California governor and the state’s U.S. Senate seats that it has predicted have turned up incorrect.

The four incorrect races were: President Harry Truman against Thomas Dewey in 1948, President John Kennedy over Richard Nixon in 1960, Sen. John Tunney’s loss to S.I. Hayakawa in 1976 and Gov. George Deukmejian’s surprise victory over Tom Bradley in 1982.

4 times since 1948.

We were up in SouthernConnecticut/ NY Citya couple of years ago on business, and this joker that lives there (who was our business rep) was trashing Rudy Giuliani and praising Bloomberg. He's fifty something.

Bloomberg is an ass, no question about it. Rudy came off to a lot of those people as some kind of facist, because he actually had solid ideas for solving problems, instead of singing Kum-bay-yah and expecting them to go away.

People here in WI and IA and PA changed their minds because they saw JEF wearing a bomber jacket and walking around with his new girlfriend Chris Christie? The only thing I can think of that benefited Obama was that Sandy kept the nation's attention off of his sorry ass record for a few days.

Because garbage in: garbage out. The polls are only getting a 9% response rate, and that means they are incapable of properly building a representative sample of the nation's voters. In fact, the Pew Research center data notes that the more likely a voter is to vote, the less likely they are to answer a poll.

The polls are trash, utterly worthless.

Accurate polling depends completely on random selection of the sample. What we have with political polls is anything but random sampling. IowaHawk wrote a great piece on this topic a while ago. His bottom line is that the margin of error on political polls is unknowable, and certainly much larger than statistical principals predicated on a random sample would indicate.

True enough in my case. And I am not even answering my cell when it shows a number I don't recognize because I am sick of being polled and also - considering I can't spare any more money to give to RR -sick of being hit up for cash. They really don't let up when they get you on the phone and I've done all I can, financially. I understand where they're coming from - I've worked the phones for RR myself, but I have too many expenses right now to be guilted into pulling out the credit card again. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 03, 2012 06:19 PM (r4wIV)

Yeah, I loved how the Pew article handwaved about how miniscule response rates really don't affect poll accuracy. Consider me unpersuaded.

I suppose the alternative for pollsters is to admit that their product is crap and close shop. I don't see that happening anytime soon, at least as long as there are paying customers for their crap.

445 His bottom line is that the margin of error on political polls is
unknowable, and certainly much larger than statistical principals
predicated on a random sample would indicate.

The key issue is that "Margin of Error" is not -defined- to mean "The one true answer lies within these bounds."

It's "If we reproduced this exact procedure and methodology, the randomness should mean that we get a result within the MoE 95% of the time."

If you methodology is sound, you get a correct measurement. If your methodology is unsound, you get complete crap ... in which you can still manage to drive down the "Margin of Error" to whatever range you desire with the law of large numbers. (Bigger sample). But it's still garbage.

It's the measure of internal self-consistency.

That's true with mathematics, but its not true with people. People introduces a variability that statistical efforts cannot quantify down to a specific number, and that was what Iowahawk was pointing out. And he's right. You can come up with a margin of error that's fairly reliable when counting how many beans go bad in a crop or how many cars will develop a fault. The part I find interesting is that the polls act like there's a fairly substantial slice of people wavering like lost sheep. More trivial details (like 'Shall I answer the phone?') end up being most of the shifting.

477 "I have said nada about Southerners being any of those things."

I think you miss the point. Yankee-hatred isn't personal, it's institutional. Yankees have denigrated southerners since there WAS a south, and they don't feel bad about doing so. I've heard it, literally, my entire life. When I lived up north, the first thing people did when they found out where I was from was make fun of my home.

Not to mention y'alls' ancestors invaded and torched our cities and ruined our economy for thirty years, instituted military governments, denied our basic rights, summarily executed people who didn't get in line quickly enough, and unconstitutionally re-wrote laws (ever wonder why Reconstruction is glossed over in history class?); and some fuckwit up-thread was bragging about this.

And this Sandy incident is just confirmation of a longstanding judgment. To southerners who, depending on their flavor, deal routinely with hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, fires, and floods, all this bitching and whining and stupidity from a small hurricane is pathetic. A few days without power and New Yorkers are pulling guns on one another in the street and crying to all who will listen about dying. And apparently, almost none of them saw fit to prepare despite long warnings. It's weak. And whining about being playfully named-called over it by a segment of the population that is *routinely* defamed in print and broadcast is moreso.

Toughness is more than attitude, yankees. And when actual hardship arrived, most of you were found wanting.

Posted by: madamex"

When I was growing up as a Catholic in the fifties and early sixties a lot of people had 5 or more kids. 10 or more was not rare. And all of the kids in the Catholic school I attended were well fed and housed.

One of the problems of welfare is that it has trained baby daddies to believe that it is not their responsibility to take care of their own kids. They consider it to be the role of the taxpayers to see that their kids are fed and housed.

There will always be a few people who need help due to medical problems, disability, or death. But a good share of the so called poor are that way because they no longer share the tradition lifestyle of school, job, marriage, and children.

480 "That's true with mathematics, but its not true with people. People introduces a variability that statistical efforts cannot quantify down to a specific number"
Didn't Nate Silver first make a name for himself as a baseball statistician? As every baseball fan knows, baseball is all about the stats - what's this pitcher's ERA, how many RBI's per season does that guy average, how many away games does this team win as compared to home games, etc, etc, etc. So Silver moved from baseball and became an authority on elections when he predicted in 2008 that McCain was going to lose - which everyone knew anyway. So now he's cited by lefties as some sort of stats god.

The the gas prices made it too expensive to run the ferry, the only way to get there. Tourists stopped coming to golf, the market crashed in 08 and the little island never recovered. It is the saddest thing.

South Carolina has a lot of second home real estate, and when the market crashed people were more concerned about their primary residence, and let the one in SC go into foreclosure.

498 FenelonSpoke, who is messing with you? Point them out to me.

Listen, peoples, this is not the Civil War. Take your wrath to WaPo and help me, if you have a plank in your eye and want to mess with people. Fight for Benghazi and the four Americans who died on 9/11/12. There was finally an editorial today in WaPo, and they called FOX News, you know the excellent reporting by Jennifer Griffins, Catherine Herridge and Bret Baier, "scurrilous." I'll give them some scurrilous...

Here's the deal, those of you slamming those suffering people (AMERICANS!) in NJ and NYC after Sandy: they were unprepared, thanks to the US Government since 9/11 and President Bush not focusing on personal preparation. Thanks to the stupid media over hyping storms.Yes, even after Katrina people don't have water or tuna or crackers (I am not talking of those whose homes were flooded away or burned to the ground and are homeless right now). I am talking about middle class citizens who ignored this storm because of Irene and did nothing. And there are probably many of them fighting for gas right now.

Americans have amnesia and very short attention spans. I worked with emergency services here in Florida after 9/11. People were just starting to learn about shelter in place.People, after 9/11, were paying attention. Some even got more prepared after Katrina. But they, again, have short attention spans, and the reign of terror under Barky certainly has no focused on small government or taking care of yourself!

To start yapping about inner cities, and how "ugly" NOLA and Charleston are, well, my pretties, I am a redneck. Generations of redneck, darlings, and I am not going to let you slam FenelonSpoke, who is a good person. I am also not going to let you slam two very pretty Southern cities. FenelonSpoke and others like her are hurting right now. I know what that feels like, after seeing my beautiful Mississippi Coast wiped off the earth with Katrina. So, knock it off with the "I was without power for x amount of days and I was prepared." It does not matter. It does not help. People are in bad shape there, and are relying on FEMA, which is not some magic carpet ride of supplies.

Residents of NYC or NJ, answer this: did your authorities, prior to Sandy, tell you that you would need 3-7 weeks of food and water? If not, shame on them. That is standard here in the swampland of Florida. And, one more dang thing for those of you currently slamming NJ, we here in Florida prepare because we go through this every stinking year: hurricanes and tropical storms. I can prep like nobody's bidness.

So, knock it off and if you have some pent-up venom, take it to the WaPo and fight for four dead Americans. Or take it to the mainstream media and link Drudge links to the forgotten borough of Staten Island and the looters of Queens. Do not start a Yankee/Rebel thing here.

Benghazi: Best for Romney to leave it alone. It's too close to the election to explain it to low-information voters, who are the only ones who have not made up their minds yet. Could backfire if he tries it. He doesn't need Benghazi to win.

Yankee Pussies: I was born in Boston, but raised in Texas. I have extended family near Boston and D.C. They are ALL pussies. But, it is a stereotype to call all Yankees pussies. Not all of them are. Watch the youtube video of the great boatlift of 9/11 as an example. Lots of good people out East.

I'm still trying to figure out why they are complaining about no food after 4 days. Look, I've gone up to six days without electricity. It's not fun, depending on the temp. But you use your gas grill for cooking. Layer your clothes and put 2 extra quilts on the bed.

For food. You start with the ice cream in the freezer. You use up the milk, etc from the fridge. As meat in the freezer thaws you grill it.
Bread lasts awhile.

Later you eat canned goods, peanut butter, cereal, you have dry milk. Canned juice. Some of these women that say they have no food live in houses. Don't they have canned spaghetti os, tuna, stew, soup.? Every time there's a sale on tuna or chunky soup I buy a few cans and shove it in the cupboard.

I feel really badly for the old people, but some of these people who are on the news carrying on shouldn't be that bad off.

liberals "nuance" their explanation by claiming that Romney is captive to his turrible right-wing base, in a way he wasn't to the MA electorate.

Of course, then they come with all the ways in which the GOP has supposedly moved to the right today, when really it's been about this conservative since the 1980s (and sure enough, back then Reagan was the one who was too "radical" compared to the glorious GOP of the past...which was of course too radical in its time as well...etc., etc.)

531 How is this for a "thank you" from NJ electrcians--->

A New Jersey power company denied Friday that it is turning away nonunion volunteer crews who want to travel great distances to help reconnect power supplies severed by Hurricane Sandy. But an Alabama utility is clarifying that it was the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers [IBEW] — not the company — that turned them away.

And a Central Florida utility worker told The Daily Caller that he and his crewmates are still waiting for the union to back down before they could go to Long Island.

This is what Christie had to say---->

“I’ve been on the phone with PSE&G [Public Service Electric and Gas Company], JCP&L [Jersey Central Power & Light] and the union, and they’ve all absolutely promised me they would never turn away a single worker whether they were union or nonunion, and I wouldn’t allow it,” Christie told reporters shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

“I would invoke my powers under the Disaster Control Act to prevent that from happening, but they’ve assured me we don’t have to.”

Any coverage from Geraldo regarding this....and his Koi? Jerkwad!

538 I have been visiting my facebook for the first time EVAR because I want to check in on my Jersey friends. We only moved from their a year ago.

A couple had generators and are sharing elec with their neighbors. They are heating their homes with wood fireplaces, and cooking on the grill. Even toasting bagels on the grill which made me laugh. They have organized grilling tailgates in backyards to share food with their neghbors.

The dads are cleaning gutters, tree, branches, street, bailing water, cleaning out basements and helping each other where they can

They are encouraging each the to stay "Jersey Strong". They have organized pick up football and soccer games to keep the kids busy. And those same kids are collecting coats, shoes, blankets, diapers and formula to send to the shore which is in such terrible shape

That seems pretty American to me.

The larger buildings are their -own- water tower. Meaning they have to have power to the pump in the building to pump water to the 30th floor. (Or whatever). You can't "just" pressurize the pipe enough to do the job - because you end up needing special pipes, etc.

This is ignoring problems everywhere else has sometimes with the system getting contaminated because somewhere wasn't designed to be underwater itself.

That is who you are seeing, today, waiting for FEMA to solve their problems. I have no idea what people are thinking after Katrina, but there are people who are not so bright. There are also elderly and poor people who are suffering, and I cannot judge them. They cannot even get out of their highrise as the elevators don't work. To me, this is worse than the 9th Ward of NOLA and people using axes in their attics. There are more suffering after Sandy than Katrina, as there are more people.

I understand that, but some of the women who were on tv news were from , I think, Staten Island and had good size houses with yards. I know about the size of apartments in the city, a cousin of mine lived there with roommates and would laugh about the size of apartments on sitcoms. And those people wouldn't have cupboard space to store much.

ChristyBlinky is going to request a ballot and fill it out with the address of Govenor Christie. It is an easy mistake if I am caught. Many uses of the word "Christie vs Christy" plus the fact I was in NJ a year ago. It could work, right?

THIS IS INSANE. Even though the electoral college will go for Barky anyway. Perhaps if it will keep them yelping about "needing more time" I should let this one go.

Mr.Coyote and I went to see Kid Rock at WinStar a few months back. The tix were outrageously expensive but Mr. Coyote and I don't get out of the den much, so I splurged. Best show I've seen in a coon's age, with the exception of Bob Seger, who is as underrated as Springsteen is overrated. (Let the flames begin).

I also love me some Rodney Atkins. His song "These are My People" likely describes a significant portion of the southern branch of themoron horde.

BTW there were a number of wimminfolks who burst into tears at Seger's show during "We've Got Tonight". It might have had something to do with all the booze we had consumed, but boy did that bring back memories.

I am so used to being called a redneck that names never bother me. I just laugh. I was in college out West and had such a Southern accent I could have been from another country. It is always a surprise when I show some intelligence, as they thought I was Ellie May Clampett. "Gollee, Paw, I need me some vittles! Let me go rustle up some possum!" I was in a nutrition class in college (for RN degree). The subject of "hominy" came up and all eyes came to me. I honestly did not know what hominy was (the puffed corn looking stuff from a can), but I did weigh in on "grits."

I was blessing hearts right and left on WaPo the other day just to watch them swarm with anger re: Benghazi. One leftie started then blessing my heart back! Lefties are not very original or have complex thoughts, bless their hearts. I also follow the blessing of hearts with, "good try!" as they are cretins. It is like kicking a hornets nest and is better than rioting, which I will do if Barky wins. That's right, I will riot. Follow me on twitter #ChristyBGoesBerserk! (not really, I do not twitter).

614 One thing I didn't care for was that big Colorado "C" insignia made up with people wearing red, yellow white shirts. What were they, like 50 deep by 50 wide? That's 2500 people who didn't come out of the woodwork to see Romney, they were part of the venue. I caught onto that about 2 seconds after I saw the first pic published about the Red Rocks concert way back when. Future advice...don't do that. The blue white R insignia on the rocks was subtle enough and very well done.

Nate Silver now claims he can't be wrong because you see if Romney wins Silver declared it is because all of the state polls were biased. I understand why this clown convinces so many people. He listed the 20 state polls that came out Friday, all but one showing an Obama lead. But he doesn't mention how many of them show Obama under 49 percent, nor does he mention party ID, nor does he mention the historical accuracy of the polling company.

The only poll I'm interested in is Gallup, not sure if they are posting new numbers on Monday or Tuesday.

If you go by Silver's logic Romney doesn't have a chance to win Florida.
