Saturday Morning Open Thread

Three days, people. Three. Days.

Like Scott Brown has been saying on the campaign trail up here, don't go to bed the night of November 6th wishing you had done more.

Also, a reminder for all you Chicagoland morons that there's an election-eve meetup.

8 Good Morning Morons. Today is Saturday, November 03, 2012. On this sad day in 1913 the US introduced the income tax. We have not been free since that day. The top rate was 7% for incomes above $500K. Isn’t it amazing how that shit works?

Yes, the Ohio crowds were inspiring. Everywhere you look, it's inspiring.

The clip below with Romney comparing his message of American greatness vs SCoaMF's Revenge, with the clip to barry hanging over the podium spewing his darkness and anger, is a true study in contrasts.

I feel the wave.

And, I also see SEIU, the Black Panthers, the UN and the media. All the evil pushing hard against the good.

If this really has been one four-year-long horror movie, it better have a happy ending.

68 Just got through watching 10 minutes of raw footage of a helicopter flyover of Long Beach Island, NJ where I spent a good deal of my summers when I was young. It was pretty close to the epicenter of HC Sandy landfall. I have seen the aftermath of hurricanes on the Outer Banks so I have something to compare it to. What was most striking was the number of roofs with zero damage, which is pretty amazing. In fact I don't recall seeing any missing shingles. This was mainly a 'water' event. High tide, low barometric pressure, and a full moon combined. A few homes -- not many --swept off their foundations. Appears as if the entire island was completely submerged for some period of time by ocean overwash -- which would not have happened on the Outer Banks with their tall dunes. Looks like mainly first floor flood damage, which is going to be expensive to repair but the majority of house look like they are repairable. Boats tossed around everywhere -- I can't believe so many people left so many boats of a size that fits easily on a trailer and could be ferried away quickly and easily behind. 'Easy come, easy go' I guess.

Posted by: Vic at November 03, 2012 07:52 AM (YdQQY)

Roberts reiterated Christie’s vow to bring utility companies to heel if nonunion workers weren’t welcomed into the Garden State.

So now it's the companies' fault for what the unions pushing them around are doing? All of these unions have to go. They are un-Constitutional entities - thinking that if I hire someone to do a job that that person somehow owns part of my company (out of nowhere) - and unions were the original terrorists, looking to bring pain to anyone and everyone in order to settle arguments they had with their employers. And unions are among the most violent pieces of shit in America, usually getting away with their crimes for some unknown reason.

And I don't get Christie's "threat" to invoke his emergency powers. Crews have been turned away (or otherwise made to know they're not welcome to come help New Jersey unless they sign more crap away to jersey unions than any employer has ever asked of an employee) so what is the Obama-loving governor waiting for? Is his state not in emergency mode?

92 Morning all. Mitt's speech last night was great. I
couldn't stand the thought of him when he became the candidate, but I
would have voted for an egg salad sandwich over the JEF. Now, I don't
think anyone else could have pulled this off against him and I am
actually looking forward to voting FOR Romney instead of against Obama.

Posted by: Ruby at November 03, 2012 07:55 AM (vt4Ip)

My opinion of him is much, much higher now than during the primaries as well. I'm sure he'll do stuff - and likely pretty fast - that will infuriate me once he's in office, but there hasn't ever been a president of either party who didn't. I think he'll do a decent job overall though. And compared to the alternative, he'll look even better. Definitely voting for Romney now, not just against the fascist thug.

DOJ lawyers and other employees will monitor voting in Harris, Fort Bend, Dallas and Jefferson Counties in Texas; Alameda and Riverside Counties in California; and Orange County in New York.

The Justice Department observers will join a growing throng of lawyers and poll watchers sent by the presidential candidates as well as state and local candidates. In addition, Houston-based True the Vote, self-proclaimed poll integrity organization, has pledged to deploy a virtual army of watchers to sniff out alleged voter fraud at polling stations in Texas and elsewhere across the nation.

175 Finally, when the team had suffered multiple strike denials after giving what they believed to be air tight intelligence, one of the women snapped.

From the book:
When Director George Tenet paid a visit to ALEC Station not long afterward, one of the women on Scheuer's staff confronted him angrily: "You and the White House are going to get thousands of Americans killed!"
Tenet's response reflected this subtle prejudice and rankled ALEC Station further.
"You will all think clearer in a couple of days."

By this time ALEC Station was regarded as "cultish" and "obsessive."

Later, when the CIA had finally had enough of Scheuer, they removed him from the station, telling him to tell his people he had "burned out," and that they were going to give him a medal and monetary award.

According to Bowden, Scheuer said he told them to "Stick it in your a*s."

That was in 1999. Two years later, Osama struck.

178 Vic, used to do this when I worked 2 jobs and one was in the early a.m.

I incinerated a lot of frozen entrees because I'd fall asleep waiting for it to cook.

buy a mechanical (that's important) timer. They're usually max 1 hour.

Start the eggs a cooking. (time a batch so you can guess how fast the stove will boil how much water you put in)

Set timer. place where you sit or snooze.

At the least, you won't wake up with smoke and burnt breakfast at most you may prevent a fire.

Sen. Vitter: Deport illegals who vote

Illegal aliens and noncitizens who vote in U.S. elections would be put on an accelerated path toward deportation under new legislation introduced by Republican Louisiana Sen. David Vitter.

While this is a “seemingly common sense proposition” there is currently no law on the books that would make voter fraud a deportable offense for foreign nationals, Vitter told the Daily Caller in an interview.

I like it, but just being an illegal is supposed to be a deportable crime. I don't like watering that down by making it sound as if they aren't deportable on that count, alone. I do want a law that says that legal aliens (residents or tourists or whatever) who try to vote are immediately deported. It's already as illegal as hell for them to contribute money or in-kind contributions to campaigns (though America seems to have blown all this off by letting Barky hold an actual campaign rally in a foreign nation, for fucking foreigners). Adding the deportable option to that unenforced law sounds good ... even though it would, in the end, be as meaningless as the rest of our laws concerning voting and foreign interference in our elections.

New Mexico is more anecdotal. I know some of he activists there, and hey are clever people who have done a de facto purge on all the illegal/dead voters in the border towns. That's why Martinez was able to win, and it's why Mitt has a good chance.

Compared to America's native tribes, black Americans have nothing to bitch about. No President or Congress ever broke contract treaties with black Americans. Certainly, the timing was an issue. But no more.

It's said that revenge is best served cold. Even so, revenge, vigilante or social justice apply to only those who participated in the wrong being addressed. That war was fought. Revenge was given its due. Lives were butchered and destroyed along with the plantations that relied on slave labor. Whatever the South had was burned to the ground. Liberia was purchased for any who wanted to return to Africa to have their own nation to build for themselves in their own pursuit of happiness. Barack Hussein Obama was elected POTUS in 2008. EVERY opportunity has been provided for No Child Left Behind, etc. etc. etc.

Vote revenge, like truth, cuts all ways.

The story of this year is how the polls missed the electoral composition, or rather, how they assumed the voting preferences of the white population. Can't argue with Ras and Gallup party ID numbers. EV in CO is confirming them.

The crew, which was at a staging area in Virginia as the company awaited “clarification,” eventually returned to Alabama on Thursday after getting word that Seaside Heights had received the help it sought, Hardin said in a statement.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at November 03, 2012 09:47 AM (dX4hn)

330 Hardin said the Decatur Utilities received documents from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers “that implied a requirement of our employees to agree to union affiliation while working in the New York and New Jersey areas.”

Hardin and a company representative did not respond to a request for details about the documentation, including which IBEW local might have sent it.

Jim Spellane, chief spokesman for the IBEW’s national office in Washington, said he did not know from where the paperwork might have come. "We didn't send it to them," he said.

Spellane said national union officials were looking into the matter.

Although Hardin says that “at no time were our crews ‘turned away' ” from the Seaside Heights utility, “it was and remains our understanding that agreeing to those requirements was a condition of being allowed to work in those areas.”

voicing his great dislike for our prez. Pretty sure he is a long-term

My fantasy is that on Tuesday evening when the overwhelming results come in that the Secret Service or Special Forces escort Bari, 'squatch, their kids and Voodoo Grandma out of the White House for what happened in Benghazi. Bari can then go to jail. The rest of his crew can hang with the homeless in D.C.

345 This:

R+3: After watching the Romney rally in Ohio, I am seeing this result as
much more possible. If Romney's energy continues to build, and Obama
continues to make gaffes like "revenge voting", then we see massive
turnout on Tuesday. The GOP gets all of the self identified
Republicans, and the reports that Obama has been cannibalizing his
election day voters turns out to be true. In this scenario, Romney wins
by over 6, with a 52-46 final tally or better. This would be a similar
result to the 1988 election. Romney would win OH, CO, FL, IA, NH, WI,
PA, NV, OR, and ME-2 for 329 electoral votes. He would also have a good
shot at winning MN and MI.

Romney is going to win.

346 You know, I think that in the end, this whole ugly, hyperactive election can be boiled down to one thing -- smiles. Barack Obama has a huge, relaxed, megawatt smile that sooths babies, and comforts old ladies. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, actually looks like smiling causes him pain. Romney has the sort of grin-and-bear-it grimace that might be more appropriate for a colonoscopy, than greeting voters you need. My advice for Republicans going into 2016 is, pick somebody with a GENUINE smile, not somebody who looks lika crudely-carved, wooden mask

355 Hi ya American Dawg. The rest of ya might want to skip this.

I clean em in the bath tub. Hot water. Lay a cymbal in the tub and wet it. Sprinkle a fine layer of BKF on the cymbal. Use a worn out Scotch Brite scouring pad circular motion following the "grooves". Don't scrub hard. Do both sides and rinse under hot water. Try to handle by the very edges w/o grabbing. When rinsed, lay on big heavy towell and dry. Then final dry with blow dryer to remove all water.
This will likely remove any lettering that is ink stamped on the cymbals. Mine never were.
Enjoy the sound of a cymbal that has all the crud off, even out of the grooves.

I paid $30 for a ten piece set of tri-wall cookware at Montgomery Wards in 1971 and still use it.

Lawn. Mine. Get off it!

I realized at some point, that those guys had been traveling for upwards of three straight days in slow moving bucket trucks, and most likely won't see their families for another two weeks at least.

From NBC's Garrett Haake:
Today there is a palpable feeling on the Romney campaign plane that the end is near.
Traveling with Romney from NH this morning is the core of his senior staff, including the aides with whom he is personally the closest: Beth Myers and Bob White, both of whom have been with Romney since the start of his political career and rarely travel.
Senior aides gathered on the front steps of the plane, informally, for photos before we took off, and many of the top folks stood around in the front section of the plane, laughing and smiling with Romney before we took off.
One top adviser told NBC after the rally that all the campaign's final ads are cut, and unless there's major news in the final few days, the ad shop's work is done.
Ann Romney also visited the press section for the first time in months, doling at snacks and admitting she had been emotional at her last solo rallies earlier this week (she seemed to tear up on the stump here this morning as well.) Unprompted, she told reporters one of her favorite moments of the campaign was throwing a touchdown pass in the press vs. staff football game at the third debate.
But while there is a prevailing sense that the long, strange trip is coming to an end, I certainly wouldn't call the group resigned - aides are still punchy and largely upbeat about their chances on Tuesday - and among the rare travelers today: Mike Leavitt, the head of Romney's transition team, still hard at work.

I've updated my Senate odds on my blog.

Here in PA, Smith has been hammering at Casey, (radio, TV, and print), and tying him to Obama's anti-coal regulations, which have cost this state jobs. Only recently have I seen anything from Casey....I think the guy's getting worried.

The one ad for Casey I heard was pathetic.....long on personal attacks, (He's rich! He's a Tea Partier! He's trying to buy the election! He's extreme!).

It'd be nice to go to sleep late Tuesday night knowing both Obama, and Casey are destined to join the ranks of the funemployed come January.

I picked it up off of a Chieftans album. They did a recording in Nashville with a bunch of Grand Old Opry stars. They had Don Williams sit in for "I can't Stop Loving You."

The other tune I snagged of that album was a version of "Wabash Cannonball" with Ricky Skaggs...used to play that out cub scout camping with my son. The boys would sing along and provide all the train whistle noises.

If and when Romney wins, and if/when Republicans pad their numbers in the House -and mebbe take back the Senate...
What happens if nothing changes, and we see nothing but business as usual?
Over the past few decades, anti-incumbency populist movements and T.E.A. Party 'vote the bastards out' groupshaven't been getting the job done wrt smaller government and balanced budget, among other things.
Do you start yet another - meaningless - 'vote the bastards out' movement? (Doing the same thing, over and over - year after year, decade after decade -while expecting different results.)
What happens? How will you address the problem?
If you're responsible voters and responxiple citizens, you should have a logical, rational answer, even if it isn't 'reasonable'.

"Maine 10% - The Independent will win this race. He could decide to caucus with the GOP, especially if it means being in the majority."

Oddly enough, I think we need more "independents".
If either branch of Congress had about 20% "undependable" voting members, we'd get a more thoughtful process, which would eventually require a more thoughtful electorate.

495 Dear ******...

A lot is at stake this Tuesday.

There are so many important items not yet accomplished on the progressive agenda, and if we do not turn out one unified, progressive voice of support for President Obama and down ticket progressive candidates, we will see the future we fight for slip further away.

Mr. Romney has vowed that Planned Parenthood will be defunded, the Global Gag Rule will be reinstated, and he will appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade.

President Obama's executive order granting college DREAMers temporary legal status would be revoked by Mr. Romney, cutting off hope for any additional college student DREAMers given that Mr. Romney has promised to veto a comprehensive DREAM Act, instead supporting "self-deportation."

If conservatives control both houses of Congress, the Defense of Marriage Act won’t be repealed, and there will be no hope of comprehensive immigration reform.

Under a Republican Senate, the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization will exclude protections for LGBTQ, undocumented, and native victims of violence.

And in a Romney-Ryan budget, the wealthiest in this country will pay less in taxes while economic supports for the impoverished are slashed.

Are you ready to put away your dreams of progress over the next few years? I’m not.

These are just a few of the things we stand to lose. Take the pledge to stand with me and vote for President Obama and progressive Congressional candidates.

Remember at Red Rocks, he saw the crowd and privately, back stage, humbly asked God to be worthy? She gonna tell them that? Would they understand it? He is a sober guy and even if he wins, it is a sobering challenge ahead of us. He is not a "spike the ball" kind of guy. He is not the guy to proclaim he is the messiah or to exhort people to vote for revenge.

good catch!

How do I know Mitt will win? By comparing the turnout at the Ohio rally to the rally McCain had in suburban Philly a few days before 2008 election. I looked around the room - a high school gym, estimated about 1500 people. Thought: this is not a good sign. It also spoke to the incompetence of McCain's campaign strategy. He used time/money to show up in Delaware County which he ended up losing by 20 points. Romney has been focussing on Bucks and Chesco which he is more likely to win. The Chester County GOP head predicted R/R wins Chesco by 8 points. I'm thinking more like ten.

IMO the TP has had a much more beneficial effort this time around, what with their support for Constitutionalist candidates and all. Many great bills have ben passed in the House, only to die at the behest of The Obstructionist Hairy Reed in the Senate. That's why the Senate races are so important.

The beast of government needs to be defanged, and the TP is just the group to help it happen.

528 I think each and every one of us better prepare are selves for a horrible night on Tuesday. A week ago, everything seemed to be falling in to place for Romney. Now, not so much. Florida seems like a toss up now. Ohio seems like a long shot. Without Florida and certainly Ohio, its over.

Im certainly still going to vote, even while I live in idiot filled Connecticut. But the truth of it all is there are just too many stupid people and too corrupt a press.

When we have voting machines that "malfunction" when some vote Romney and it pulls up Obama, I think its more than a sign. This has bothered me since we heard of this weeks ago. And why in the hell do people buy in to this calibration nonsense? Im sorry, but unless the people behind these machines are idiots, this was done intentional. This is like pressing the R key on your keyboard and having the O key show up. Anyone with some programming and software background of any kind knows that this "malfunction" can not only be prevented, but its almost impossible if the machine is built and created properly. You're telling me that we have voting machines that have to be calibrated as if they are a slot machine?!

How many people voted for Romney, only to have it come up Obama, and not notice it? Perhaps not many but you never know. Every vote counts, and for this to have been allowed to happen with out a full investigation and stricter guidelines on these machines is disgusting and a crime in my mind. You dont hit one button and have another option chosen unless its intentional or the machines were built by morons. Either way, there is no excuse and no reason that a heavy investigation shouldnt occur.

549 Those of you who have been following the White House Insider on Ulsterman Report know the riots are coming when JEF loses. The plan is to have JEF go out in a blaze of glory by "ending" the riots. People are going to die and there is going to be a lot of destruction. But, the riots and JEF's reaction to them will cement his place in history as a racial healer. Or so thats the plan.

Anyway, the point of this is that by JEF agitating his troops with revenge and all that that type of talk entails tells me he knows hes going to lose. So, he has to spark the fire that will lead to the riots so that he can then implement his post election plan. Just my two cents.

552 264/UC,

Late to the party but CONGRATS!!
This is the best thing to ever happen to you, even though you don't yet know it. Relax and enjoy!
I had my son at 38. Couldn't have been a happier, healthier pregnancy.
In the words of Hypnobabies (lol!) "Pregnancy is natural, normal, healthy and safe."

Yaaaay another future R voter, unless he/she is a rebellious little chump.

553 That is one beeyoootiful guitar. Love that natural wood Fender too. Wouldn't have known what it was till I saw your answer to Mr piano mover.
I've got an old super twin reverb (don't know what year) that guitar would sound great through too.
With someone that really knows how to play doing the honors that is.

560 553 The wood on that particular guitar was spectacular. It sounds fantastic unplugged but it had the typical fretboard problem that all custom shops have where the rosewood swells and contracts in different places and is wavy after it hangs up on display for a while. That's why nobody was biting on it and I got it under market. I tore it down and did a complete level and polish, Made a bridge and tailpiece out of 4130 Chrome Moly steel and machine a compensated nut out of bone. It is the best Les Paul in Austin bar none.

Thanks for thinking of us, but we have two shotguns and husband, self, and 15-year-old son all know how to use them. We also have NRA and USMC stickers on the front door, which tends to discourage unexpected visitors.

I'm a judge of election and so I'll be out all day - don't expect to get home until 9 pm. After which I will pop an Ambien and go to bed. Husband and son have been instructed not to wake me up no matter who wins.

Or the more common lesson of , when in someone else s house, don't shit on the carpet.

Don't be that guy.

What the fuck are you talking about shithead? Someone accuses you of threatening the president and that makes you guilty? Eat a dick and then master the concept of innocent until proven guilty.

You know, many years ago when I started coming here, after being
kicked out of every God Fearing blog for behaving, well, much like you
are now. I took me awhile to understand that everyone that disagrees
with you or offers you advice is not your mortal enemy.

Strings of Capitol letters does not give you more attention. If you
are not careful, you could be seen as not a member of the community, but
a party joke, like JeffB.

I do enjoy some of your more colorful rants and am usually glad to see you here. I am also open to an apology.

Posted by: Oldsailors Poet, Wonders what Dagny thinks at November 03, 2012 10:45 AM (3Y7RV)

Back from class and happy to engage you in some facts. You accused me of theatening the president then of assaulting you. Maybe in the many years of experience you have you dont think the first is out of bounds and the second is pure paranoia, feel free to apologize first. Also while i am sure you have many many many years on me, i am pretty sure i wont be asking you for wisdom and guidance any time soon. Nothing personal but I generally dont take advice from random internet joes who tell me I am going to get a visit from the secret service for threatening the president.Just sayin. you went way out of context and way overboard, expecting an apology for your behavior is way out there.
