Whoah: 13% of Obama's 2008 Voters Are Defecting to Romney; 3% Undecided

I thought 10% was the maximum he could lose, and still win.

From Hot Air (I thought I discovered this on my own, but clicking back, nope, Hot Air),13%, with 3% more undecided.

So, ultimately, somewhere between 13 and 16% will defect from Obama to Romney.

Obama won relatively big -- more than any Democratic president in recent memory -- but not so big he can afford that level of defection.

70 million voted for Obama in 2008; 60 million voted for McCain.

13% of 70 million is 9.1 million. Subtract that from 70 million and add it to 60 million and you get... Look, I don't do math. I'm just an unfrozen caveman blogger. Your strange world of magic scrawlings confuses me.

And this doesn't even count the independent advantage for Romney!

I can't see how this poll can be true, and yet Obama's tied in the Washington Post's head-to-head.

But again, unfrozen caveman blogger.

Bonus: I figured if Obama lost 10% of his support, Romney would win.

But actually Obama can only afford to lose less than that if his lost support mostly votes for Romney instead of just staying home.

My 10% figure was based (to the extent I base math on anything) on figuring that about 60% of Obama's lost votes would just stay home, and 40% would flip.

But if most of Obama's lost vote is actually voting Romney... well, he can afford fewer lost votes.

Oh Wait: It's wrong to say "And this doesn't even include Romney's advantage with Independents," because, actually, it does include that-- the independents who voted for Obama, but who are now defecting.

But what it doesn't include is much-higher enthusiasm among non-Obama voters in 2008. Many of whom stayed home that year.

Not this year, baby.

Not this year.

Obama in 2008 - 69,456,897 votes
McCain in 2008 - 59,924,814

Obama in 2012 - 58,343,793

Yet, Canadians are trying to storm the election in support of obama.

We saw an idiot Canadian donating (getting caught by using her name announcing it) to obama's campaign, and now this:

Orléans students' U.S. election trip to Ohio cancelled after parent complaints

It was alleged the students would be campaigning for Obama, which outraged some parents who say the Democratic leader eschews Catholic values because of his pro-abortion views.

...

Reports said the trip was organized by civics teacher Scott Searle, who is listed as a volunteer for the Obama for America campaign.

...

Initially, the trip was touted as a way for students to be introduced to the U.S. electoral process, but Pierre said any semblance of an unbiased trip soon vanished.

“The board says that there was active participation in the campaign, and initial reports that that wasn’t the case must have been reconsidered by the board,” she said.

Unbelievable.

At least this was stopped.

OK-- let's say that the Democratic turnout will be supressed by 10% (just because they frickin' lazy). that's 63 million votes for Obama just on turnout. If 9.1% of those will go to Romney then Obama scores 57 million votes.
I know for a fact that any moron that voted for McCain will almost assuredly vote for Romney which means that the 9.1% (5.7 million votes) not cast for Obama will be cast for Romney bringing his total to 65 million votes. I also know for a fact that a number of Republicans stayed home last election because they just could stand McCain so we adjust romney's figures by 10% (6.5 million votes)
Throwing out all decimals as a conservative estimate my total will be:

-
O: 57 million
R: 71 million

Posted by: CheshireLion at November 02, 2012 04:31 PM (zNDIM)

101 O down 16%, R up 13% (plus Mcan't sit out types)....

So 70M-11.2M=58.8

60+9.1=69.1

R=54.8%
O=45.2%

Not a bad day...

109 **Could someone explain to me this “Romney will take this country back fifty years” crap that’s all over the left today? **

The liberal pathology prevents its victims from being able to speak or argue rationally. Instead, they grunt in code words for their various prejudices.

50 years ago mean, the 50's, a time when America was prosperous and the family structure was intact, and America was very strongly anti-communist and there were no hippies.

Of course, the left hates all these things.

They claim there was racism (hint: there was) but then again, the avg black family existed and there were black jobs. No ghettos. But there was institutionalized racism so you know, you can't have that. Same with dames. They couldn't yet work at jobs that involved pushing fake paper around an office (i.e., HR offices that exist to hire female HR officers) but they were generally happier than today.

Nonetheless, that's what they mean. Why? Apparently, because Republicans are anti-communist and pro-business, and pro-family...so...50s. racist.

As I pointed out in another thread.... look at Facebook.... Liberals are vocal and Profane... and MANY on the right, silent... browbeaten into silence because they don't want to FIGHT about it.

Now, take that meme and apply it to polls.... where many on the Right, do not answer Polls...

And you suddenly have 5-8% of voters NOT being reflected in the pollig data... due to their own chosen silence...

Add in the institutional bias of just about all the polls, where they think more DEMS will vote, the Reps..... which belies most of history (2008 was an outlier)...

And you have the perfect situation for Polls to be wrong... and WAY like in Reagen terms, wrong...

But this week, she called her parents to say she had voted for President Obama. The care home in Fayetteville where she lives registered its residents to vote and drove them to the polls, Green said.

182 Going on the premise that Rasmussen is the most accurate poll (at least based on 2004 and 2008 predictions), he has them tied today with a D+3 (I think) split. Most pollsters agree that Republican enthusiasm is higher for this election than in previous years so, based on 2010 numbers, we should see at worst, a D+1, at best a R+1 or R+2 next Tuesday. Early voting seems to confirm that more republicans are motivated to vote compared to democrats. So, assuming this is the drift for the next 4 days, it seems logical to think Romney has a better chance at winning than Obama, right?

186 Ace--

The 13% actually does take into account Romney's advantage with independents; that's one of the main factors in the shift.

Also, by itself, this wouldn't be quite the disaster for Obama that it seems, because there are two relatively small but important group of voters who didn't vote for him last time, but are likely to break significantly for him this time: voters ages 18-21, and recently naturalized citizens. Part of of the 13% loss (but only a part) is likely due to the aging of the population: Romney is winning older voters, so it stands to reason that some of Obama's 2008 voters will have defected simply because they've become older (and wiser, obviously).

Combined with the reversal of the enthusiasm gap from four years ago, however, this does appear to have the potential for something close to repeat of 1980.

Posted by: SpitfireIXb at November 02, 2012 04:42 PM (HBsj6)

187 43

If I'm doing my math right, Obama can have back all 3% of his undecideds. Minus the 13% who say they are voting for Romney, he's at 60.4 million. Starting with McCain's total of 59.9 million, if only 1 out of 13 former Obama voters who say they're now voting for Romney do so and the rest stay home, Romney wins by a couple hundred thousand votes.

He predicted a 100 seat gain and a Senate Majority for Republicans in 2010. How did those predictions work out? Also the notion that an incumbent under 50% is in huge trouble is not accurate. If it's 45% incumbent to 39% challenger, the incumbent will win in a given race.

262 from breitbart on Colorado polling data, "In PPP's poll, Democrats have a 4-point edge in the sample. The partisan split is D/R/I: 40/36/24. I don't think in the history of the state have the Demorats made up 40% of the electorate in a presidential election. Even in the Democrat wave year of 2008, the GOP actually had an edge in the make up of the electorate. The partisan split was 31% R, 30% D, and 39% Ind. In 2004, the GOP had a 9 point edge over Democrats. "

If you take the DRI of 40/36/24 (only giving O+4 at 50%) and put it into 31/30/39, you get:

O=31+16, 47 versus R=30+23 53

for colorado, a purple state

Belize is steadily becoming just another tiny, crappy, violent, lawless Central American state -- albeit one with larger white and larger black minority populations than the others.

The occasional rich American moving down there doesn't really impact the fundamental demographic shifts.

319 So this is next to meaningless.. but I will relay this little tidbit to all you worriers in hopes it will cheer you up.

5 years ago, I started going on Daily Kooks.. to basically troll.. It can be fun.. and they are so easily annoyed.. it almost isn't a challenge... I've been banned from there, but I still visit often to see which way the wind is blowing from the other side.

But here's the point.. Those are probably THE most rabid bunch of partisans on the internet. But their numbers are not even half what they were during the 2008 campaign. Participants in diaries - i.e. commenters - would normally be in the several hundreds.. No more.. many of their "diaries" fail to garner 50 recommends.. only a few a day get recs and comments in the hundreds.

It tells me that, on the whole, liberals are less interested in politics.. the younger ones have given up.. The OWS crap beat the fight out of a lot of 'em.. Obama's failures to come thru on all the far-lefty promises have beat down another big chunk of those libtards as well.

2008 was a lib fantasy come true. And it was the perfect storm for us.. McCain! Ye gods! What a loser.. and they had their god who was gonna save the world.

It's gone though.. And I think their drive is gone and they are beat down enough for us to win.. because our enthusiasm and our drive is akin to what they had in 2008.

So.. don't worry.. we got this one..

321 Seriously- should I be worried if Dick Morris is worried the hurricane has bumped obamas numbers?
====================
No.
Why?
Early and absentee voting.
Obama won in 2008 because he racked up huge points there.
Case in point: NM Albuquerque saw a 63/37 split before election day and a 55/45 split on election day in the JEF's favor.
With 2 days to go, it's down 56k from 2008; and only 13k were added yesterday.
Most of the early voting is in the books; Romney focused on the soft supporters--people who likely voted for the JEF last time, the JEF focused on his hard-core.

Any increase for the JEF now will be due to the soft supporters--many of who Romney already got to the polls for him.

341 My theory on the polling being "close" is this. Its all about the donations. If they release a poll to big of a win/loss for one side whats the point to donate to them anymore? If romney is up by 10 points in every poll its in the bag right? So he wouldnt need anymore money to win. And if hes down by 10 points (this goes for either candidate) no point in donating because who wants to give money to someone who is going to lose? So they purposely keep the polls "tied" to keep that sweet sweet cash flow.

What a difference.

358 I think surveys like this are far more telling than simple polling that can easily be gamed.

All the polls say the same thing at this point, independents are going for Romney by nearly double digits, it's just a matter of how many Republicans vs Democrats are put in the poll.

But when you have a survey that shows a SUBSTANTIAL amount of people saying they voted for Obama last time around, but now they're voting Romney, it looks like a landslide to me. Especially considering that's not factoring in a possible Republican tsunami of turnout.

Posted by: McAdams at November 02, 2012 05:15 PM (plgt6)

359 Wanted to say something to the people who fear Obama's Sandy bounce (I think he got one).

1) It (or much of it) may fade by Nov 6. Obama looked Presidential and I think the global warming stuff helps him w/ independents, especially women.

However, bounces based on optics aren't really deep ones (IMO). It's why most convention bounces fade relatively quickly...you see everyone at their best, but it doesn't really alter their record and issues.

I really think as people think more about the election this weekend, and Monday, and less about Sandy things will largely return to whatever they were going to be anyway (w/out Sandy).

Part of the reason I think this is that O's two strong debate performances didn't move the needle for him. I think many of the people who claim to be undecided have actually hardened their hearts against him.

2) A lot of us (I'm one of them) had something like 51-47, 51-48 as the popular vote result. If we were right the bounce shouldn't be able to alter those numbers enough to get a popular vote win for O.

Perhaps he could go a point higher or so, w/ more undecideds breaking to him, but I don't see many Romney voters flipping over Sandy, only undecideds.

Remember also, that even w/ a popular vote win of under a point, Romney likely would have something like a 67% chance of winning the electoral college too. Over a point and his chances go into the 90% plus range. Over two points and the chances of an EC win increase to virtually 100%.

Quite simply: He doesn't have to win by very much to ice this thing. Remember 2004 was considered a close election and Bush won by 2.4 points.

Even with a Sandy bounce for O, a similar performance to Bush's is very achievable for Romney. Thus, this thing can be "close" and still be a very solid win. Remember that.

364 Been said many times, but one more time for the eeyores. There is no way in hell that bambi can win again. No. Way. I know I live in a red state, but it is almost impossible to find the voter willing to state they are voting bambi ...and I know some of them were part of the fooled last time. My pulled from thin air says that at least 1% that voted for him to "be a part of history" won't be doing it again, at least 1% that voted for him won't because the economy still sucks, and at least 1% o that voted for him because McCain sucked so bad won't. Romney wins Tuesday, and it would be an epic blow out if it were not for those that will still vote for the chocolate jesus simply based upon his skin color.

White men: 61-37 RR
White women: 51-46 O
White % presuming gender balance is equivalent: appr. 53-44 RR

So, in a state that's 81.0% WNH, 15.6% H/B, the minority vote turns the total about 12 points? I guess that works mathematically. Dubious.

372 I saw a recent poll showing defection rate of 12%, can't recall if it was state or national. I think it was in Ohio. It also showed Obama getting 9% of Republican votes.

In 2008, I've read Obama got 9% of Republican votes also. McCain got, like, Lieberman's vote and that was his entire Democrat support.

So Obama is holding on to his 9% liberal Republicans but Romney is more than matching him.

Racist Right calls Obama a traitor over death of FOUR Americans, But calls Bush a Patriot over the death of thousands! Sean Insanity uses suffering people as "prop" to demean Obama's efforts while Hate-Radio and Romney does NOTHING to help!
It’s disgusting how President Obama is being vilified for the death of FOUR Americans. It was a horrible tragedy but it also shows another mental problem with the right, and that is being hypocritical to the bone.
With the election next week, the party of racists, bigots, extremists haters are NOT hiding the hard-core fact that they don't want black people in the White House anymore. That proof is in the pudding.
You right wing nuts blame Obama for everything from how your kid does in school to the weather conditions.
I’m supporting Obama because generally speaking I believe he is tilting the country in the right direction, particularly from an economic perspective, whereas the Republicans would do irreparable damage to the economy and gut vital social programs that are a lifeline to many Americans just like they did for eight years Under Bush.
Wow so let's see shal we? Despite alledgedly being nothing more than an unqualified "community organizer" we now have a guy that can have people killed, controls the tectonic plates and can call down earthquakes at will, has the power to manipulated the global media, is going to circumvent the Constitution to obtain a third term, somehow is taking guns away despite only a single significant bit of gun legislation during the term which actually expanded gun rights, and is simultaneiously both the messiah and the antichrist. Wow I can understand why you oddballs are so frightened by this uberman
No doubt Obama-haters like here are without dobut the biggest racists in American History. Bigger than the KKK, bigger than the Nazi. Bigger than Rush Limabugh!
The party of racists, bigots, extremists, homophobes, AND hypocrites scream bloody murder over the fact that FOUR Americans die under a “lie” that President Obama told, but then again these exact same hypocrites didn’t whine, in fact, they didn’t care or mind that hundreds and thousands of Americans died under a lie President Bush told. They didn’t mind that they died for an unjust war or that they died looking for weapons of Mass Delusion.
That is a fact!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Terrorist Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Traitor Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Communist Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Marxist Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Socialist Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Muslim Is an Un-American Racist AND a Bigot!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Liar Is an Un-American Racist AND a hypocrite!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Fraud Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Enemy of America Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Destroyer of America Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Murder Is an Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Evil Man Is an Hateful Un-American Racist!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Homo Is an Un-American Racist AND a lying homophobe!
Anyone who sees Obama as a Failure Is an Un-American Fact-challenged liar who thinks 8 years of Bush was a Success!
I think in some republicans minds he is a virtual communist, but in reality he is nothing of the sort. Hell! He's NONE of these things! Just a Black man as President who doesn't scare Americans, just the party of racist, bigots, extremists, homophobes who will go as far to exploit the suffering of Americans, like Sean Insanity to demean the President!
POS SCOAMF - nicknames for Obama popularized by Brain-dead racists and Dog Fellaters.
"The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work...
and then get elected and prove it.” - P.J. O’Rourke
