One Of The Few Real Surprises Of The Campaign: The Des Moines Register Endorses Mitt Romney

And smacks Obama around in the process.

A taste:

The president’s best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short. Nothing indicates it would change with a second term in the White House.

The president’s prescription upon entering office was a dose of government stimulus, which was the right call because it put cash in the pockets of consumers, made investments in vital infrastructure and kept millions of teachers and police officers on the job.

That stimulus was necessary to bridge the nation from recession to recovery, but the time is past for more government stimulus.

Consumers must feel more confident about their own economic futures to begin spending on the products and services that power the economy. A renewed sense of confidence will spark renewed investment by American companies. Industry will return to full production and hiring will begin again.

That should come with Mitt Romney in the White House.

Newspaper endorsements don't really matter too much (if at all). The only way they have any impact is if they are a surprise. Here's the DMR's record via Slublog.

• 1964: Lyndon B. Johnson (D) - won
• 1968: Hubert Humphrey (D) - lost
• 1972: Richard Nixon (R) - won
• 1976: Jimmy Carter (D) - won
• 1980: Jimmy Carter (D) - lost
• 1984: Walter Mondale (D) - lost
• 1988: Michael Dukakis (D) - lost
• 1992: Bill Clinton (D) - won
• 1996: Bill Clinton (D) - won
• 2000: Al Gore (D) - lost
• 2004: John Kerry (D) - lost
• 2008: Barack Obama (D) - won

This isn't the yawner that the NY Times endorsing Obama is. Plenty of free and paid media mileage to be wrung out of this one.

Bonus fun: About 5 minutes before the endorsement hit, Obama's Iowa comms director tweeted this.

Considering today's @DMRegister editorial on Akin, Mourdock, and Romney's extreme position on womens health, hard to imagine DMR endorsement

A writer for the Communist Party USA says that “…re-electing Obama is absolutely essential,” and warns that “divisions among Democrats and a potential wave of bad economic news can combine to threaten President Obama’s reelection.”
Marxist John Case, who writes for various CPUSA publications, has written a piece, “The danger of a Romney election,” for the party publication People’s World, which warns that “Re-electing Obama is not sufficient to bring economic recovery or even relief to our people. Only a different class configuration in political power can do necessary minimum reforms to give us a chance. But re-electing Obama is absolutely essential. Now is not the time for hand washing the complexities and tactics away—or failing to triage the most critical questions from those that are less critical. We cannot win everything at once!”

120 As a Iowan, I can say I'm not surprised. Iowa is VERY much in play and I expect it will turn R this year. The mood is against Obama and there's a ton of Radio/tv ads from him trying to make up some ground and failing.

I'm surprised. Nobody really likes the Des Moines Register. Conservatives hate it. It used to be a statewide paper, but now it's really just for the city and immediate suburbs. It's more of a public utility than a business and I suspect it hemorrhages money 3 out of every 4 years, when Iowa doesn't get national attention.

The comparison to Nixon is apt. They'll endorse Democrats unless they are completely embarrassing. I'm actually surprised they endorsed Carter the second time.

Regarding the "ladyparts" editorial: My suspicion is that there was a huge fight among the editorial board and that the losers got to write that editorial as compensation.

131 guys we are gonna have to settle for soft endorsements from any lefties.

They cant say we were wrong this guy was a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

Getting them to actually say ROmney would be better for the country is good enough for me.

I dont care if the left doesnt accept the fact that his is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

I know he is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.
You know he is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.
They know he is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.
They know we know he is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.
We know they know we know he is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.
And they know we know they know it

The disappointment in their shriveled little socialist hearts will never be fully known until we hear the wailing and lamenting of their metrosexual she-men on election night, decrying for all the world to hear: DEMOCRACY DIED TONIGHT MAN! IT DIED! IT'S OVER!

The knowing is sufficient. And the anticipation feeds my soul.

Once he is out of office the left will cannabalize him for fucking up the democrat party and setting socialism back another 30 years in this country (assuming Mitts more Ronnie than Willard).

Those extreme american hating cuntfaced shitstains like Bill Ayers will not now see in their lifetime the glorious socialist state they dreamed of and the decline of America they hoped and worked for.

It may still happen, but they will be long in their graves by then and we will have ample opportunity to avoid that and instead piss on their tombstones.

The sting of that knowing - that their life's work is a failure, is more than satisfying enough for me. I can live with them not being able to say outright, Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure in their endorsement.

Because we all know they will say after the election Obama WAS a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

Romney gave a complete interview to the DMR while campaigning in a barn, while Barky gave an "off the record" interview that only was released after an editorial from the newspaper. The mood of the country is shifting, and I don't think Barky can recover. Just today the LA Times released an article that even though Barky will win California, he won't win it in the huge numbers like he did in 2008.

That being said...closure decisions are made by the district manager in conference with the most senior manager in the building. it is highly likely that the mall will close sometime Monday, and thus they will make the decision to close Macy's also.

we had a conference call on Friday to discuss this very scenario.

don't worry. Most retailers are safety conscious these days, and do not do the crazy things they did in years past. Back then, the philosophy was, if the customers still want to shop, we'll stay open. no longer true. thank the lawyers for this one.

This is a hope. It's not the best hope; I'd rather we took the schools back (they're so bad that most parents are terrified of having to send their kids to them, anyway), but it does give me some hope for the trapped kids.

The Obama Campaign thinks that Abortion and Birth Control are what matter to most Americans....they belittle women but dividing them into a singular issue gender which is insulting. Most women do not believe in unlimited abortion like Obama and Planned Parenthood and most do not believe TAXPAYERS should pay for their Birth Control and to paint Mitt and Paul as anything but loving husbands that support their wives is insulting. I find it amazing Bill Clinton treated his wife like garbage....Obama is virtually never with his wife and yet Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Mitt Romney clearly adored and adores their wives who are always with them. It blows my mind....Conservative Men treat their women like queens while liberal man act like Queens!

It is no wonder why conservative women are beautiful for the most part and liberal women look like a poster child for expensive plastic surgery!!

Women, like men, worry about JOBS, Future, Money, Opportunity, Values, Military, Education, Family and America!

Newsflash to Obama!! Des Moines Register realizes the same!! And this is a major blow to the Marxist!

285 I don't think newspaper endorsements move votes either ... but I will say this, one of the feelings I get from less political people is they're afraid to say they're against Obama for fear of being called a racist, or if they're a minority, a sell out. Perhaps this year because of these fears newspaper endorsements like this could move a couple thousand votes and a couple thousand votes can really matter in Iowa. If a paper is endorsing Romney and the voter is on the fence, an Iowa voter could feel very assured it's okay to feel the way they feel and vote for Romney after this endorsement. The fact they haven't endorsed a Republican since Nixon plays well in peoples minds too.

292 Is anyone thinking that the Amish are going to come out in droves and vote against JEF this yearlike they voted against Kerry in 2004?

They seem to do this when they really think it's critical for the country.

Since they don't have phones, no one is polling them

They are pacifists (before you ask, I'm not real Amish) and so their support for Bush was surprising. The Amish are not well-organized so I don't know if there is any general push. They do try to stay out of elections. Mennonites are even more pacifist. Mennonite colleges drown in "conflict resolution" and they're obsessed with it.

Both are, of course, personally and spiritually conservative so a radical social agenda -- like gay marriage -- would impact them. Also, Obamacare and it's current and future mandates would be anathema to them. As far as the war thing, Obama's been a hawkchicken so he wouldn't appeal to them at all on that score.

It's scary to have to think that way, but, were one an honorable person in this situation, would you trust this administration not to have a massive shredding party? And I mean "shredding party" as a metaphor, not just literally, lots of paper getting shredded.

377 Obama must be disgraced in such a way that there can be no doubt what he did.

It cannot be a half-hearted measure. We have too many people in this country (including some of my relatives) who think this is just all BS that Fox made up.

The American people need to see actual evidence so that there can be no doubt.

Obama cannot win Iowa now. He cannot be even with democrats and republicans in registration and lose ANY Independents OR any Dems. He will now lose some dems and is behind in INDYS and I feel this is NOT just an Iowa phenomenon, it is a nationwide one!

government stimulus, which was the right call because it put cash in the
pockets of consumers, made investments in vital infrastructure and kept
millions of teachers and police officers on the job.

That stimulus was necessary to bridge the nation from recession to recovery, but the time is past for more government stimulus."
...the hell? The first was a "necessary bridge to recovery," but the recovery ain't never happened. So first one mandatory, but naaaaaahhhh, we don't need a second.

388 As far as IL goes, I have not seen one Obama lawn sign so far in my very mixed-race city neighborhood. Not one. A couple of R/R signs - actually the one on my street was gone this morning. I wonder if it got stolen overnight. I do see a lot of those annoying "proud union home" signs that came out around the teacher's strike, and signs for the state senator race, but no Obama.
I don't know if IL is such a given for Obama that no one thinks they should even bother, or if it's indicative of lackluster support.
And I've seen a handful of Obama car stickers. This is nothing like 2008.
In my immediate family, three Obama voters have said they are going to vote for Romney. They're life-long dems, and theydon't want to, but they're struggling. They need some jobs. And they have woken up to the fact that they've beenlied to repeatedly, from campaign promises like closing Guantanamo to the cost of Obamacare to Benghazi.

I don't think there's any evidence to preserve. I think Obama had a closed door meeting with SecDef Panetta and just said something along the lines of, "It's too risky to do anything." Since no orders were issued, there's no document trail.

403 They proved me wrong because even they in their Liberal minds could not bring themselves to do what their default mechanisms normally would cause them to do. Today the Des Moines Register abandoned the Liberal Presstitute media protection racket for the Lyin kING and showed the country it is OK to vote with reason and foresight rather than hatred, fear or blind ideology! In doing so they signaled to the country and the rest of the Presstitutes that "DESCENT IS STILL PATRIOTIC" My hat is off to you Sirs!

Posted by: ConcealedKerry Or SubMitt at October 27, 2012 10:27 PM (2BH9a)

404 This stuff has probably already been posted, but I did not feel like reading through all of the posts before posting. Obviously, the import of this endorsement is whether it "seems" to deliver the state's electoral votes, not whether they picked the next president. The Register picked the winner of Iowa's electoral votes 14 out of 23 times (61%) if we go all the way back to 1912. This includes President Wilkie in 1940 and President Dewey in 1944. This includes 5 of 6 (83%) since 1988. They missed on Carter in 1976 (Ford took Iowa) and missed Reagan's victories in 1980 and 1984. I'm not sure I'd credit them for 1964 (or 1932 or 1936) since these were "no-brainers", but they did (as noted) deliver Iowa to Wilkie in 1940 and Dewey in 1944.

409 "Uh, yeah. And muttering about "public sexual objectification of women" basically makes you a whiny liberal beta. Women are literally made to be sexual objects. Even women see other women that way."

lol, i kind of am a "beta". not really whiny and certainly not liberal, but i have my very own "alpha" that belongs just to ME who chose this short, scrawny, mute beta of his own accord, so i'm really not losing sleep over it.

either way, i'm pretty sure you and the rest of the folks here missed my point. i don't care about sexual objectification of women; i certainly wasn't trying to *moralise*. i just object to the notion that the red-blooded american maleness of a guy can be reduced to his taste for blowjobs and pretty...unsophisticated...sexual contests.

being as women freely compete in wet t-shirt contests, you won't see me complaining about them. just complaining about the preposterous implication that enjoying wet t-shirt contests is some sort of threshold for manliness.

maybe i'm biased, but i know this tall, broad, strong, outdoorsy guy who, oh yeah, almost died in iraq (and *never* tries to milk sympathy for it...never even TALKS about it) protecting your freedoms and mine.

i just sort of resent the sentiment that he's anything less than a manly, (literally) heroic red-blooded american male because he's not beholden to stereotypical male sexual psychology.

by all means, have fun with your wet t-shirt contests and lap dances -- i know *plenty* of women enjoy participating in those things, too. just don't denigrate the men for whom those things are *not* their cup of tea as somehow not manly "like the should be".
