What Romney Needs to Win Wisconsin

In three charts.
Walker won easily in his recall not thanks to depressed Democrats in Madison or Milwaukee but by amped support in the Milwaukee suburbs, the Green Bay markets, and, importantly, the "rest of" the state. Places like NW Wisconsin (Duluth Metropolitan Area) W Wisconsin (part of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area) and Central Wisconsin. These "other parts" get ignored but are critical for a Republican and can make a serious difference.

Evidence below the fold, VERY big evidence.

Snapshots of two different crosstabs by region.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Crosstab by region for Mitt Romney-President Barack Obama, Marquette Law Poll October 17 2012:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

A very obvious difference in the "rest of" territory, confirmed when you compare Romney's narrow los by .5% in this to Thompson's equally razor-thin .3% "win" in the same poll:

Crosstab by region for Tommy Thompson-Tammy Baldwin, Marquette Law Poll October 17 2012:

While this may seem like a subtle difference, closing the gap by another 4 points while performing roughly the same in all other regions flips a tight race in the Republicans' favor.

Winning the region outright, like Walker managed to do? President Romney. This is why ads are going up in Minnesota, and also why Governor Romney must push visits and efforts in the often-neglected western and central regions of the state. Well, if he wants to win, that is. But hey, what do I know. Not like I covered the Badger state during the recall.

17 And we would have to be idiots to think that Romney's people haven't game-planned these type of numbers in every winnable and barely winnable state. I'm confident they have similar charts for Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Oregon as well.

But no...instead of looking to all available evidence over the last 9 months that these Romney people actually DO know what they're doing, we get posts all day about media polls with fucked up demos. Because keeping Obama's base from totally bailing on him with 11 days to go if a "key state" showed Romney ahead wouldn't AT ALL be part of a media outlet's polling plan.

Not at all...

How about Michigan and PA?

Posted by: Jumbo Shrimp at October 26, 2012 07:35 PM (DGIjM)

23 I suspect the Wisconsin GOP knows this already, and that is why they have pushed for this from Team Romney. Don't be shocked- not my call, but want it out there- don't be shocked if Romney actually wins Wisconsin while losing another critical state. The Republicans are heavily invested under Reince, Walker and the rest, and as we learned from the misinformation attempts during the recall, the R ground game is stronger than it has ever been. We had a troll in here constantly whining how Barrett had a superior ground game and Walker wasn't fighting and blah blah blah- which all turned out to be lies. Per Dave Weigel, no friend to the right, the current R operations aren't at the capacity of June but are humming and far more engaged in than in the previous Presidential races. I'd feel great if Romney/Ryan did a tour through the north and west and central in addition to advertising and I suspect we will see it soon.

103 I don't think Wisconsin is going for Romney. We haven't voted for a Republican President since 1984 and we've had plenty of GOP Governors & Senators in that time.

Living in Madison, I can report that the local liberals basically blew their wad in the recall election and there's not even 1/100 of the passion around this race, but the Obama ads that run here are pure red meat designed to make sure turnout doesn't dip too low. I'm sure it won't.

Central WI isn't reliably Republican at all. The key central counties of Wood, Portage & Marathon are always very tight races. If Romney wins it'll have to be on the backs of Green Bay and the Fox Cities and the Milwaukee suburbs. So yes, showing up in a Packers jersey might not be a bad idea.

However, anyone offering a "Brandy Alexander" would be laughed out of the state. That's some John Kerry level of ignorance.

109 I honestly do not understand what the fuss is about.

Have we forgotten that there is not currently a single major pollster that is not WILDLY oversampling Democrats?

According to Gallup the electorate is R +3. Republicans have increased enthusiasm by 40 points over 2008, our financial situation and GOTV efforts are galaxies better than 2008. Romney has tied with women, leads with men by double digits and Independents by an average of almost 20 points. In addition we have a POTUS embroiled in a Libya scandal that will only grow worse in the next week and a half.

Even Rasmussen is still turning out polls with D +6 samples. That whole charade is about to go away very quickly. Gallup has already started to turn with his Romney +5 poll today. By Tuesday Gallup will have Romney + 7 or +8. Rasmussen will follow. State polls now using Dem +9 samples will switch to Dem +0 samples. We are about to see a 1980's style surge to Romney if for no other reason that we have abandoned the bullshit sampling.

Relax people, work hard on GOTV but this is in the bag.

136 @119. They rally in Marion is a great location because it pulls small city and rural people from Marion north to almost Sandusky, as well as Columbus suburbanites in Delaware County.

Obama really fucked up the GM thing for his vote in Montgomery County (metro Dayton) by screwing over the Delphi people. Obama knows he has a problem in the black community in Cincinnati, hence the visit next week and all the ads on black radio here in town. The rest of metro Cincinnati is heavily R.

Kasich may have muddied the water by including cops and firefighters in the pub employ bill but, on the whole the new R crew in C-Bus has been pretty good at taking away advantages for the Dems over the last 2 years. The re-districting involving Kaptur and the little freak from Cleveland was genius. The bad blood intra-party between Toledo and Cleveland Dems has been a thing of beauty.

Getting Schmidt defeated in the CD2 R primary was also a great thing. She was a serious ticket drag in a key R district and now she's gone.

181 I can't imagine Romney not making Wisconsin his #2 swing state behind Ohio. He freakin' put Ryan on the ticket, so that had to be part of his calculation. Ryan is going to want to win his home state.

So far, Romney has executed a nearly perfect campaign, my guess is the big push is just now coming online for Wisconsin.

If Gallup is close to right on the popular vote, Romney has several paths besides Ohio. And I'm not an Eeyore, but I don't trust Ohio to always do the right thing. There needs to be a Plan B, and Wisconsin if anything is almost more likely to flip to Romney since Obama has not tainted the water supply there yet with $100 million in campaign spending.

Here's what's not right. It's totally bogus in the extreme to assume only one party is voting early.
So Obama leads by double digits in those who voted while Romney leads by double digits of those who WILL vote? If that doesnt smell like a turd, I dont know what does.

What I really think is happening is that some Obama supporters may be lying about having voted early. That's the only way to make the demographics and numbers balance out. Why do that? If Obama campaign is bugging people about voting, it could be they are saying that to get the callers off their backs. Just speculation.

I'm surprised that Paul Ryan doesn't simply camp out in Wisconsin until election day and say in his distinctive Cheesehead accent "Why would you vote for a Bears fan?"

As for me, I signed up for the ORCA program in the AOSHQ sidebar and I suggest that everyone else does too. Don't let your fellow Americans hang out to dry like Obama did to our boys in Benghazi. Volunteer.

188 A big chunk of that Western Wisconsin population actually works in and around St. Paul MN. On work days that I-94 corridor is jammed with commuters heading west in the morning and back east that evening. It's a conservative stronghold, but all the media outlets (TV, radio) are in MN. Tommy Thompson is from that area (Elroy WI).

Not coincidentally, that "North Metro" area north and east of St. Paul is (or was) Michelle Bachmann's district.

In 2000 and 2004 George W. Bush missed taking Wisconsin by 10-12K votes out of 2.5MIL cast. Obama's big win in 2008 had less to do with him than with independents disgust with McCain. (I voted for him but it wasn't easy.)

The margin of victory in Wisconsin will come from Paul Ryan's 1st District where he routinely takes 65% of the vote, roughly 20% of the Dem/Independent vote.

189 Here are the results of an unscientific survey taken on a thousand mile road trip from Minneapolis through cental Wisconsin three weeknds ago. This trip included the cities of Sheboygan, Milwaukee, and Madison. The basis of my survey was campaign signs observed while driving. Outside of three cities mentioned above, it is clear that Romney-Ryan have the market. The exception to this was an area of complete wilderness near Baraboo, in which the sparse population seemed to mostly support the Democratic Ticket. (The map labeled this area "There be Dragons".) The interesting thing about the fore-mentioned cities was not the absence of Romney-Ryan signs, but rather the lower than expected (my expectation) number of Obama-Biden signs. I have always pictured these cities as blue-collar / university hardcore Democrat. They may still vote that way, but with a lot less enthusiasm than in the past. I readily admit that my analysis may be colored by my expectation of what a hardcore, left-leaning area looks like, as I live in the heart of Congressman Keith Ellison's district in Minneapolis.
