New WaPo/ABC Daily Tracker Has Romney Up 50% to 47%;
Leads With Independents By 19 -- NINETEEN -- Points

And the partisan split? D+4!

This is a very naughty poll. I need to spank it.

The WaPo points out that 50/47 is actually a statistical tie (Margin of Error), which I guess is true, but they go on to suggest that it's a genuine lead, inferring from other stats.

Romney does now boast a statistically — and substantively — important lead on the economy, which has long been the central issue of the race. When it comes to handling the nation’s struggling economy, 52 percent of likely voters say they trust Romney more, while 43 percent say they have more faith in the president.

And just as the challenger has leaped ahead on this score, he has effectively neutralized what has been a consistent fall-back for Obama: economic empathy. In the new poll, 48 percent say Obama is more in tune with the economic problems people are having, and nearly as many, 46 percent, say Romney is the one who is more in touch. Just two weeks ago, Obama had a nine-point lead on the question.

One more thing they point out:

Should [Romney's 19 point lead with independents] stick, it would be the sharpest tilt among independents in a presidential election since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide win.

70 From the RNC Memo on Ohio:

"In the 19 polls released in the public realm since the first debate,
Governor Romney leads among Independents in 15 of them (two did not
include data among INDs). And, if you take an average of his lead among
Independents in those 15 polls, the margin is 12 points (49-37).
***
Looking back at the past five major statewide races in Ohio, the candidate who wins Independents has won the state:
[Obama won I's by 8]
***
According to the Quinnipiac Poll, Republicans are more enthusiastic than
Democrats about voting in the upcoming election by a double digit
margin (52%-40%).
***
We have knocked on 21 times as many doors and made three times as many
phone calls in Ohio compared to 2008. Sometime this week we’ll knock on
the two millionth door and make our sixth millionth voter contact since
May.

84 The "empathy" poll is what gives it away that Romney is on a landslide path. Ace, you mentioned it many times before, once the electorate has decided on a candidate, it starts grading that candidate higher on all sorts of sub-topics - ones that the other candidate clearly does (or should) dominate. You explained it much better, though.

This seems a perfect example. You would think Obama would be blowing Romney away in this category, and he was. But the cascade looks to have occurred.

"The biggest challenge we've always had is that unlike FDR--who came into
office when the economy had already bottomed out, so people understood
that everything done subsequently to his election was making things
better--I came in just as we were sliding. Because of the actions we
took, we averted a Great Depression--but in the process, we also muddied

I predict seeing this on election night:

pundit 1: how could the polls be so far off?

pundit 2: especially in Ohio and Michigan. There was no indication of 5 point Romney wins in those states.

pollster 1: I guess almost all undecideds broke for Romney.

pollster 2: Yeah, that's the ticket.

I think even the non-biased pollsters still have kind of a 2008 hangover on how much support for Oblamer there is, despite what they saw in 2010.

122 Off topic but somewhat related:

Warning longish post.

Longtime neighbor of my dad (45 years in same houses next to each other) honored her recently deceased husband (avid Republican) by getting a Romney/Ryan yard sign. This was always a joke with him and my dad, since Dad is a staunch dimmacrat.

They would always good naturely trade barbs, but at the end of the day no harm no foul.

No sooner did this little old 85 year widow put a RR sign in her yard then a Obama deranged neighbor came over, yelled at her, cussed her, sent threatening emails told her she was in violation of HOA covenant. Very upsetting to someone who is so weak she is on Oxygen and can hardly walk. She called my dad to ask for help and also to find out if the Obama deranged neighbor was right about yard signs.

Turns out people who buy in that area NOW can't put up yard signs, but my Dad and next door neighbor can, cause they have been there since the beginning doncha know.

So my Dad got a HUGE Romney/ Ryan sign and put it in his yard (even though he will probably vote Dimmacrat) just to say to that Obama deranged neighbor "SCREW YOU BITCH".

So Obama deranged neighbor now has to look at two signs as she terrorizes the neighborhood, and one of them is in a Dimmacrats yard. Nicely ironic.

Sorry for the long post I hope you enjoyed it.

125 19-POINTS: "and he now has only days to convince a lot of independents in states like Ohio and Virginia" BWHAHAHA

How Bill Clinton May Have Hurt the Obama Campaign

1. A simple comparison hurts a loser. Unlike Obama, Clinton was never this far behind in a campaign last two weeks.
2. Without a brain, Strawman Obama ASKED for advice.

How [ELSE] Bill Clinton May Have Hurt the Obama Campaign
By MATT BAI, NYT

"Mr. Clinton was able to set himself up against ideological extremism so successfully because he really was a centrist deal-maker, and everyone knew it. However much Mr. Obama may see himself in the same pragmatic vein, the voters, by and large, do not. As it is, though, Mr. Obama has chosen his path, and he now has only days to convince a lot of independents in states like Ohio and Virginia that Mr. Romney really is some raging conservative, rather than the more malleable, somewhat awkward fellow he is impersonating on TV. It’s an approach that has both pluses and minuses for Mr. Obama, much like the former president whose influence pervades his campaign."

130 Keep in mind that just because a poll is a "statistical tie" doesn't mean it's an ACTUAL tie. Though the numbers for both candidates are subject to ranges, the statistically most likely "true" number is that Romney is, in fact, leading by 3% in a poll that is tilted six points to the Dems (actual partisan split is R+2).

138 Via RCP, Obama's vote share in the most recent polls:

Average: 47

AP: 45
Ras: 47
ABC: 47
IBD: 47
Gallup: 47
Monmouth: 45
NBC: 47
CBS: 48
Zogby: 50
Politico: 47

Notice a trend?

It's going to be very, very, very difficult for O to win if he caps out at ~47% of the vote. He'd need a third-party candidate to suck up 5-6% and keep Romney at ~48%.

Don't see it happening.

Final bit of good news: evidently Zogby (if I infer correctly from CAC's twitter feed) is not a reputable pollster, so I'm ignoring that 50% number. Note also that IBD re-weights to 2008 electorate models, so Romney is never going to lead in that one.

I think it's happening.

152 Also from the RNC Memo, seems the Republicans are focusing their early and absentee vote efforts on the weak and marginal GOP voters, getting those leaners to the polls early.

While the JEF is focusing on getting the hard supporters to the polls early.

The JEF was planning on an October surprise and Romney was counter-acting it.

This is why it's going to be a landslide: Romney is focused on locking down the hard to get votes first and saving the "I'll crawl through glass" voters for election day.

Think of it as a war: Gen. Romney is sending his green recruits to the front first and they are holding their own against Pvt. Pantywaist and his veterans. On Nov. 6, Romney will send his veterans against the JEF's newbies--who are you betting on?

What changed? Is this an admission that D+11 models were flawed?

I think they just change the D+'s to keep the story going.

I'm not sure that it's even intentional on their part- getting it too wrong would be bad for business.

My theory is that Dems are just more likely to participate in phone polls. Maybe because they're bored from being stuck at home all day collecting welfare, or are more eager to proclaim their political associations to an anonymous voice on the phone.

Also, it's possible that Republicans are more distrustful of pollsters as with the MSM, so are less likely to play ball.

Or some combination of the above.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of people called in these phone polls don't participate. There was a recent one where only about 1 in 30 people called responded. 1 in 9 is considered good.

195 Should Romney's 19 point lead with independents] stick, it would be the
sharpest tilt among independents in a presidential election since
Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide win.

See, here's the rub:

1. Reagan won that election 59% - 41%.
2. That was in a D+2 year (38/36/26 D/R/I).

I just don't see how even with one or two added points in the D+ column (can't be more than D+3 or 4) and with more stable pools within party (figuring that Mondale bled a number of Dems in '84) that the race is really this close.

Just as likely, what we're "seeing" has been the unreported case until now.

"Brother, can you spare a dime/ make that a $5.00 minimum donation." BHO

And to think that Obama ridicules any historical references as if irrelevant when tackling Republican fiscal agenda, yet indulges himself.

Unlike FDR, Barry's NEW DEAL never appealed to Americans who work or at least who are looking for work. FDR may have run "Bill of Rights" into the ground promoting the Right to Work as another New Deal Bill of Rights. But Barry's effect has been the dissolution of THE Bill of Rights during his singularly UNPRECEDENTED miserable excuse of an administration.

People...as Rasmussen has said....the election will not be that close. As for OH...will people in here (SOME) cut the crap about it. If you clueless clowns think the Dems will have plus 7-10 YOU ARE NUTS! It is your own petty fear that makes you believe that. Heck Chuck Todd laughed about the TIME POLL in OH that so distorted numbers even he called it GARBAGE. They has GOP turnout below 2008 and with PLUS 9 Dem Sample. NEWSFLASH TO THE WORRY CROWD:

Obama only leads by about 7 percent in early voting....last time in 2008 he was up 20 percent....GEE tell that to some and it goes right over the head!

Survey USA....had those under age of 40 making up 48 percent of their poll yesterday...in 2008....in OH it was 41 percent...SORRY the big secret that many in here do not understand:

These polls are all OVERSAMPLING THE YOUTH vote in relation to 2008 which was a banner year for the youth vote....All indications is that it will be quite a bit lower...so TIME AND SURVEY USA do what? Heck they oversample the 18-35 yr olds...which happens to be what??? THE NUMBER VOTING BLOCK FOR OBAMA! They are deliberately oversampling single females in this group to overstate the female gender gap and to keep Obama in the game. And that time poll has Obama up over 20 in early voting...another thing Chuck Todd laughed about. Obama is nowhere near up 20....he is down to 7.

Another nugget about SUSA Poll...they show Romney winning Independents by 8 percent...same as Obama did in 2008 and they also show Mitt winning 20 percent YES 20 percent of the African American Vote....yet they show 47/44 OBAMA...right!! sure it is....Notice that 9 percent undecided...hmmm I wonder to cover thyself SUSA?

They thing to watch...early numbers plain and simple. Go over to Jim Geraghty at NRO from yesterday and CHECK OUT OH NUMBERS...the actual numbers....stop thinkingabout BS skewed polls...and check out the real numbers...or do you wish to live in denialville?

The GOP is way up in early voting in OH and the DEMs are down...That is all that matters and Obama's team knows it. That is why there are rumors of them trying to cobble victory without OHIO!!!

Take the time and educate yourselves and you would FEEL MUCH BETTER ABOUT OH, THE REAL NUMEBRS PROVE IT!

OH will gofor Mitt...I have family members in OH working on the campaign and they are exceedingtheir targets. The response has been fantastic....check the numbers at NRO withGeraghty from the Campaign Spot yesterday!

Who else heard that lady (yesterday?) on Rush saying that 'as a fiscal conservative' she voted 2008 vs. McCain/Palin to prove how pure she is, voting for Obama '08. But based on being such a pure fiscal conservative, she's been supporting Romney's '12 campaign all along and will vote vs. Obama this time.

The brainless wonder couldn't have at least thrown her '08 protest against the Republican corruption by voting a write-in candidate or some other little party candidate? And she considered herself '08 so much "smarter" than Sarah Palin.

273 edit @272
BTW, check out Drudge regarding Texas kicking UN election watcher's butts if they see them around our polling places trying to inspect. They have been warned!!!! Snarky tools!!!

274 Speaking of naughty, four large sample polls each with a 3 point lead and Romney at 50 in three of them. I have but one good spanking hand and many targets!

BTW, what kind of drugs are the guys at TIPP smoking? A LV screen that passes over 90% of the contacts with a plus 7D model can only be construed as nonsensical.

I have long heard the complaint that the guys at RCP are breaking all kinds of statistical rules by averaging polls that have different sample models. They may want to redo things a bit so the reader can enter a DRI model to see what the polls would produce.

275 Sweet. The trend is our beyotch, er, friend. Methinks too that this is not a "comeback kid" poll, rather one for credibility. Panties are bunching in the 'Rats and presstitute's offices as I type.

276 This voting machine ain't workin' right. In all those other states I voted for me, all I had to do was vote for Romney.

Virginia: Romney 50, Obama 48; Update: New Fox News poll also shows Romney by two

278 Bret Bair is showing that Nevada is going democrat. But the poll he's using is the RCP poll.

279 beautiful sight!

Gallup, ABC/WP, AP, Rasmussen: Romney +3,+3,+2,+2

280 Good lord. In new FoxNews polling Romney leads with Independents by 22 points! Was tied a month ago.

Posted by: Bill Mitchell at October 25, 2012 06:45 PM (hlUJY)

281 Romney up 19 with Indies but only leading by 3 makes sense to me.

282 LOVE the story about the political signs.

I mentioned this coupla days ago, I was a a b-day party and I ran into a 90 year old navy vet. I told him I'd be happy to take him to vote but he said he had several offers already and he COULDN'T wait to vote against TFG! This, in the people's republic of Illinois

285 I kind of understand how black people felt with Barky won. I want to go to DC for the inauguration!

This is the day we start to take back our country.

286 My understanding in Intrade is mainly non-US betters, and many of them just see a poll in the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN etc and assume it has no agenda. It's not like most Europeans get their American news from Fox.

Also, betting on political elections is almost always an extension of who you "want" to win, not about coldly calculating what bet will make you money. Europeans overwhelmingly love the socialist Obama that bows to foreign leaders and is embarrassed of America, so its natural to think that's where more bets are going to be made.

Intrade will probably be accurate the day of the election, but it's mostly worthless for something that people have such strong emotional feelings. Even if I thought Romney was going to lose the election, I couldn't see myself betting against him, and I'm sure the other side of the aisle feels the same way and is just going down with the ship.

287 Should [Romney's 19 point lead with independents] stick, it would be the
sharpest tilt among independents in a presidential election since
Ronald Reagan’s 1984 landslide win.

Please, God.
