Karl Rove: No Candidate Has Ever Lost After Being Up 51% In Mid-October On Gallup

This isn't a poll post.

This is a poll analysis post.

Please note the crucial distinction.

It's just a fact.

Why would Gallup do that? Complain about Gallup all you want, but they have a business they need to defend. And their historical record is pretty darn accurate. Gallup is going to play it straight. Now, they may be using a faulty or outdated model (as soothsayer believes - I think soothsayer), but that is not necessarily their fault. A sign of the times perhaps.

In any even, Gallup is a business. A business that will survive no matter who wins. They will play it straight.

Obama has been given far more credit than he ever deserved. He won an easy victory in 2008. John Edwards would have won that battle. Obama didn't win it because he was so great. He won it because the facts on the ground were all lined up against the GOP. Now being an historical candidate, with limited background, and a compliant media certainly helped.

But since his reelection, everything he has done has basically been unpopular. And he started losing elections immediately. We will look back on this and wonder why we were so worried about this guy. He was destined to lose because he governed like a left-wing ideologue in a conservative tilting country. No more, no less.

130 Obama will basically be known as the American Idol president. He won at AI's peak of popularity. He was new and fresh. He was that one hit wonder. But there was no substance underneath it. Never was. He could only have been elected in 2008. I'll give him credit for this. He knew 2008 was his moment and he seized it. And its possible he will go down as a very consequential president merely because he enacted Obamacare. He may be a one-term president, but if Obamacare stays on the books, it may well have been worth it. But his losing this reelction bid is entirely predictable.

Now, if he wins, I will have a lot of crow to eat.

141 The poll of polls has it tied

The "poll of polls" includes some dubious information. Both IBD and ABC are heavily weighted towards Dems (+7 and +9, respectively). Adjusting those two polls to a more reasonable turnout
projection, Romney would have slight lead in both, which would lead to
an RCP average of about +2 for Romney.

Regarding Rasmussen v. Gallup, Rasmussen weights his responses to a pre-determined party breakdown (in his case, D+5), while Gallup asks a series of questions and determines likely voters that way.
I guess the election results will tell us which methodology was more accurate.

O's Gallup number, and the right track/wrong track number, have been in "small chance of re-election" territory for months.

As noted above, in an incumbent referendum, when things suck, the main question is: is the challenger an acceptable replacement?

In this case, yes. That answer was already in place, I believe for some time. But the (bizarre, huge, un-presidential) pre-emptive SCOAMF campaign to dirty up Mitt, and of course the supportive "press" distortionstrategy, just ensured a greater backlash/unleashing of inevitable preferences once Mitt was formally introduced to a record debate audience via the most lopsided political ass-kicking ever seen in the electronic age.

The only real question now is the amplitude of the wave, and how many boats it lifts over the reef.

195 "I just requested Nov 7,8,9 off to burn some vacation time. A 3 day bender of valu-rite and pudding."Might I suggest that you instead request three days off BEFORE Election Day and use it for ground game volunteering?Because if Barky squeaks back in, still a very real possibility with the illegal/graveyard/cluelessfuck/obamaphone vote, your intended 3 day bender is going to be followed by four years of utter misery.

My calendar:

Sat-Tues: Volunteer, work my ass off.

Weds: Nurse hangover

Thu-Sat: Lost in the woods

Sunday AM: Beg the wife to let me and give me a key for the new locks

Sunday PM
Beg for a key to the new chastity belt

spot on, runninrebel

I've shared your "landslide" premonitions for a long time.

But of course that won't affect my behavior in the least.

In any case, I remain very sober (that is, glum) about the future even after a landslide, thanks to the state of everything - government, electorate, civil society, culture. Bambi is a SYMPTOM, not cause, good people. His ineptness - and that of his sub-mediocre staff and cabinet - have ensured he's a one-termer, and that his damage will be limited. But that he was even able to enact some of his idiotic "agenda" illustrates the broader problem. Look at the way the Dems quickly folded and forced that idiot Clinton (and he is) to "triangulate" - i.e., follow a GOP congress on the big issues. Just for starters, that Dem party is already gone - what remains is monster that pure menace - no speed bump, brake, or anchor on the dumbest, most unconstitutional, or insane ideas of the left fringe. Not any more.

I will achieve 10% confidence in the future if, in the first 9 months of the Romney administration: ACA is fullyrepealed, all "sequestration" nonsense involving DOD is done away with, Kennedy retires and his replacement is Miguel Estrada - nominated as Chief Justice, bumping Roberts down to Associate, the most important 20 executive orders get issued (mostly nullifying the insanity of the current incumbent's orders), someone of the caliber of The Stache is made SecState, there is a bloodbath in the flag ranks, esp. of the Army, to clean out the Caseys, Dempseys, and Chiarellis, and a titanic assault in launched to return some decency, professionalism, and sanity to the DOJ.

I think too many people offering this advice to their fellow Romney/Ryan voters about not being overly confident are conflating voters with those actually running the Romney/Ryan campaign. If they get cocky (like Bush's people did in 2000 when they were actually campaigning in California late in the election as a display of confidence), then it can be a problem. But all of us being confident really has no impact on the election results unless we don't go and vote because we're so sure of Romney winning. That's obviously not going to happen.

Good question. Guard against overconfidence in July. Something Obama and his supporters probably should have done. The wave is coming and it can't be stopped. If Mitt loses, it won't be because I was overconfident. I will admit i completely misread the electorate. But confidence from Rove and the partisans are good.

1. People like jumping on bandwagons and being part of the winning team. Which team looks like it is winning right now?

2. The GOP base is likely not going to sit at home now, and certainly not because we are so confident. The Dem base just might if they know it won't make a difference.

3. Even the MSM will at some point just get out of the way, and save what little credibility they have left for when Mitt takes office. Why blow it all cheerleading for a losing effort in the final weeks. They did their best.

4. Taunting from a lead ismuch more fun.

Did he watch the debate? Or listen to it? Did he read the transcripts? Did he read any after-action fact checking?

No. None of that. His Twitter feed last night filled up with instapolls by alphabet networks saying that Barky won overall. Therefore, in this guy's rather dim mind, Obama won, Romney lost, no further insight required.

This is a registered and highly likely voter we're talking about here. Who congratulates himself on how "tuned in" he is.

257 #224 I followed that election closely. Bush was drawing huge crowds until the very end, bigger than we are seeing for Romney now. I fully expected a landslide.

I think their internals showed such, but they didn't realize the magnitude of the vote fraud, since the machine hadn't been used against a competent Republican in a long time. The reason Bush squeaked through was because he was so popular and such a relief from Clinton that the fraud couldn't overcome it.

And that was why the democrats hung on so long, and why Bush wouldn't give up. He knew he had won, and they knew they should have been able to steal it.

The DUI didn't depress turnout as much as give them an excuse to explain why the final vote differed from the last polls by Gallup and such I remember Zogby changing his methods the last few days and polling on different days. Poll watchers at the time couldn't figure out why he did that. Of course, he started showing a move away from Bush even though no one else did, and since he polled different days than Gallup he couldn't be compared. Zogby's brother was working for Gore.

I will always believe that Bush won the real votes in a landslide.

And that is why my governor, Mitch Daniels, and other Republican governors pushed so hard for voter id.

I think if the party machine in the various big cities is discounted, ACORN taken out of the mix, and so on, Bush won by 3-5% and McCain probably won in 2008.
