Crowley On September 30th: Administration Took Weeks To Admit Benghazi Might Be A Terrorist Attack

@lochnar with a great catch from Candy Crowley's interview with David Axelrod on September 30th.

Here's the full exchange for context (video here). I'll highlight what I think are the important parts.

CROWLEY: I am joined by Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod. I want to pick up on what John McCain and I were talking about. There's a back and forth now about why didn't this administration -- why did it take them until Friday after a September 11th attack in Libya to come to the conclusion that it was premeditated and that there was terrorists involved. John McCain said it doesn't pass the smell test, or it's willful ignorance to think that they didn't know before this what was going on. Your reaction?

AXELROD: Well, first of all, Candy, as you know, the president called it an act of terror the day after it happened. But when you're the responsible party, when you're the administration, then you have a responsibility to act on what you know and what the intelligence community believes. This was -- this is being thoroughly investigated.

CROWLEY: But first it was, like, not planned.

AXELROD: We need to bring to justice--

CROWLEY: First, they said it was not planned, it was part of this tape. All that stuff.

AXELROD: As the director of national intelligence said on Friday, that was the original information that that was given to us. What we don't need is a president or an administration that shoots first and asks questions later.

CROWLEY: But isn't that what happened?

AXELROD: And, you know, Governor Romney leaped out on this Libya issue on the first day, and was terribly mistaken about what he said. That is not what you want in a president of the United States. And as for Senator McCain, for whom I have great respect, he has disapproved of our approach to Libya from the beginning, including the strategy that brought Gadhafi to justice.

CROWLEY: But this has to do not with the approach to Libya but with the murder of four Americans in Libya. And didn't the administration shoot first? Didn't they come out and say, listen, as far as we can tell, this wasn't preplanned, this was just a part of --

(CROSSTALK)

AXELROD: At this point, this is what we know, and we are thoroughly investigating. And that's exactly what you should do. That's what the responsible thing to do is. I was kind of shocked to see Representative King attack Ambassador Rice for what she said last Sunday here and elsewhere, because she was acting on the intelligence that was given to her by the intelligence community. To say she should resign -- she is one of the most remarkable, splendid public servants we have. That's thoroughly irresponsible.

Here's Crowley talking to McCain before she interviewed Axelrod on the same show.

Friday we got the administration's sort of definitive statement that this now looks as though it was a pre-planned attack by a terrorist group, and some of whom were at least sympathetic to al Qaeda.

Why do you think and are you bothered that it has taken them this long from September 11th to now to get to this conclusion?

The Friday she is talking about was September 28th, the Friday before the show aired on Sunday the 30th. Obama's Rose Garden statement which Crowley said last night was when Obama claimed to call it "an act of terror" was September 28th* Last I checked the 12th came first.

So which is it Candy? Did it take the administration until Friday to admit it might have been per-planned and "that there was (sic) terrorists involved" or did Obama claim on September 12th in the Rose Garden that it was "an act of terror"? It can't be both.

* I changed the date because I misunderstood which Friday she was talking about.

What amuses me most is this: two months ago, the team negotiating the debate schedule/format/topic on behalf of Obama probably thought they scored a huge win by having the final debate focus on foreign policy instead of not-at-all-helpful-to-the-Obama-campaign domestic policies like the economy. 96 willow@39,

Excellent reminder. That is the most under-reported scandal of this event. An American was arrested for free speech in order to bow to government imposed, self-exercised Sharia Law. Furthermore, the arrest was conducted under the fraudulent auspices of this victim being an unsavory character and that had nothing to do with the real reason for his imprisonment.

Think about it this way; there is nothing the O-ministration and the MSM want more than to ignore the Benghazi Blumpkin.

This exchange keeps the story alive for a few more days and all that's needed is enough time for the seed of doubt to crack open in the low-info voter. Doubt is a dangerous thing for an incumbent.

It's not this thing alone that's going to make a different. It's the accumulation of all the weird, hinky stuff that has accumulated on Obama.

It does fucking matter. The White House had a lot of sources warning them of a TERRORIST attack. They tried to peddle the story that the attack was NOT a terrorist attack and was in fact a SPONTANEOUS DEMONSTRATION - then they could say they were never warned about a SPONTANEOUS DEMONSTRATION.

They were warned. They ignored the warnings. Americans died. they tried to make those warning irrelevant by saying they were never warned of upcoming spontaneous demonstrations.

1) Read the question
2) Time the responses
3) Warn candidates when they are approaching or have exceeded the time limit and stop them when necessary.
4) Stop one candidate from interrupting another.
5)Ensure that all candidates have equal speaking time.

That's it. Full stop. You should not hear anything else coming from the moderator's mouth. That is not their job. They should be all but invisible.

Here's two things Americans will never understand:

1) Why couldn't we get the FBI into Benghazi for 3 weeks? Too dangerous? We're Americans, we take Marines we can go anywhere.

2) Why can't we get an answer on who gave the bad read to Susan Rice? That oughta take about 10 minutes, not 5 months.

Americans should not tolerate this, and Romney needs to tell us he'd know the answer in 10 minutes. And fire somebody. He can always "go to the binders" for a replacement.

Don't you think that the Libya situation fits into the larger narrative about the administration's dishonesty about multiple issues and their incompetence? After all, they didn't secure a consulate in an unstable country filled with foreign terrorists who hate the U.S. and knowingly lied about the cause of the attack on the Libyan consulate. You have to look beyond the micro issue and to the macro issue. The Romney/Ryan campaign understands this, which is why they are trying to include all the smaller failures by the Obama/Biden administration as part of the large narrative about their incompetence. It helps make their point about the most important issue, which Romney won handily last night at the debate -- the economy and fiscal strength of the U.S.

150 The walkback will be complete by the last debate:

CANDY CROWLEY:

Well, you know, I heard the president speak at the time. I, sort of, reread a lot of stuff about Libya because I knew we’d probably get a Libya question so I kind of wanted to be up on it. So I knew that the president had, had, said, you know, these acts of terror won’t stand or, whatever the whole quote was.

And I think actually, you know because, right after that I did turn around and say, but you’re totally correct that they spent two weeks telling us this was about a tape and that that there was a, you know, this riot outside the Benghazi consulate which there wasn’t.

So he was right in the main, I just think he picked the wrong word. And I, you know, they’re going to parse and we all know about what the definition of is is, but, I, uh, you know, in the end, I think John [King]’s probably right. I think this has a lot more to with jobs and the debt crisis and all of that kind of stuff.

I just think that probably it was one of those moments and I could even feel that here, you know, when you say something you’re not expecting. It’s just that was the natural thing coming out of me going, ‘Actually he did, you know, call it an act of terror.’ Uh, when, you know, half the crowd clapped for that and the other half clapped for ‘But they kept telling us this was a tape, this was caused by a tape’ so, you know, in the main, the thrust of what Governor Romney was saying, which is why I went back and said that, um, but I just think he picked the wrong kind of way to go about talking about it if that makes sense.

1) Let the candidate dance around a question specifically directed at him.
2) Protect that candidate during a moment of disagreement with his challenger.

The entirety of a moderator's role in a debate should be as follows:

1) Read the question
2) Time the responses
3) Warn candidates when they are approaching or have exceeded the time limit and stop them when necessary.
4) Stop one candidate from interrupting another.
5)Ensure that all candidates have equal speaking time.

That's it. Full stop. You should not hear anything else coming from the moderator's mouth. That is not their job. They should be all but invisible.Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit and ABO Supporter at October 17, 2012 12:36 PM (4df7R)

169 Which by the way leads me to question why Romney was not better prepared for this remark?

This statement by Acxelrod was easily found (he called it an act of terror the day after). Yet Romney fumbled, almost indignantly when the President mentioned it.

Romeny could have responded with the entire litany of remarks by Rice, at the UN et al about how it was the video.

Instead Romney breaks debate rule #1 and asks a question of the President?

Garsh.

First question to President Obama: What the fuck is wrong with you?

Followup question:

What were you thinking? What was going on in your mind? Presidential gravitas? Where, where did you come up with that? You're not presidential and you have no gravitas. You know you really need some help. A regular psychiatrist couldn't even help you. You need to go to like Vienna or something. You know what I mean? You need to get involved at the University level. Like where Freud studied and have all those people looking at you and checking up on you. That's the kind of help you need. Not the once a week for eighty bucks. No. You need a team. A team of psychiatrists working round the clock thinking about you, having conferences, observing you, like the way they did with the Elephant Man. That's what I'm talking about because that's the only way you're going to get better.

202 There's two issues with the Libya question. Everyone is concentrating on Romney's statement. What's not being discussed is that al-obama totally dodged the question. The question was, who was responsible for the lack of security and why". Crowley's job, if anything, was to get al-obama to answer the question that was asked. That also is not being discussed.

My opinion on Mitt's response is that the RNC should demand a formal correction from Crowley. Crowley saved al-obama and also provided a headline for him. This needs more than some half-assed walk-back by Crowley. They should be held accountable. She had no business whatsoever doing what she did and should be called to the carpet for it. The RNC should not let this slide.

Exactly. They don't quite realize that the post-debate polls showing a narrow Obama "win" in last night's debate has more to do with how his performance improved from his pathetic performance in the first debate. Plus, the Left is ignoring the fact that those same polls show Romney dominated on economic issues, which are by far the most important issues to voters in this election. It looks to me like Obama may have slightly "won" the battle but lost the war.

As such, any and all statements by a Republican that refer to women are prima facie evidence of their intentions.

The mysterious and hidden epidemic, first highlighted by the Center for Public Integrity, has claimed thousands more lives across Central America. In El Salvador and Nicaragua alone, the number of men dying from the excruciatingly painful disease has risen five-fold in the last two decades. High rates of CKD also have been found in rural villages in India and among the rice paddies of Sri Lanka. The CKD plaguing sugarcane workers, however, is something scientists have never seen before. “It affects people who don't have obesity, diabetes or hypertension, which are the usual risk factors for chronic kidney disease,” said Sasha Chavkin, a CPI reporter who has covered the mysterious epidemic for several years. “No one can figure out what it is that's making all these people sick.”
