Overnight Open Thread

There were some very troubling moments in the VP debate last night pertaining to the military and is captured very well in this article: A Civil-Military Headache From The VP Debate That Could Linger.

Where things really got dicey was when, in response to the charge that the Afghan surge withdrawal timeline, Biden tried to hide behind the military. Raddatz pressed him on the complaints she is hearing -- we all are hearing -- but Biden dismissed it as nonsense. He pretended that the withdrawal timeline was proposed by the Joint Chiefs rather than imposed by the White House.

That is not true. The Joint Chiefs and the Afghan combatant commander did go along with the White House order, but they proposed a slower, conditions-based timeline and they certainly did not want it announced at the outset.

This is a very dangerous game to play. Because of the strong support for the principle of civilian control among our armed forces, civilians can and do make the military salute and obey orders the military think are inadvisable. Canny commanders-in-chief try to minimize those instances, working with the military to cajole and bargain them into supporting positions that they initially opposed (this is exactly what Bush did with the Iraq surge). But when the White House bigfoots a decision, as the Obama White House did multiple times on Afghanistan, it is the president who must shoulder the political load for the decision.

Biden knows, or should know, that from the military's perspective President Obama imposed an under-resourced Afghan surge, undercut it by announcing the timeline, and interrupted the last fighting season by accelerating the withdrawal. That was his prerogative as commander-in-chief. But if that policy is criticized, as Ryan did in the debate, the Obama White House must be honest about how it came about. Biden cannot pretend that this was the military's plan all along.

Biden saying that the military asked for $1T in cuts, surge withdrawal, etc almost sounds like a rapist blaming the victim saying they asked for it.

It's your plan Democrats. Own it. If you are gonna take the credit for bin Laden, then man up and take the credit for your Afghanistan surge debacle, Iraq SOFA failure and defense cuts. It is little wonder that military support is so little for Obama/Biden.

Beer Sales

Beer sales declining for the last 3 years? In the age of funemployment? Hmmm. Anyhow, here are the 10 States That Sell The Most Beer. I'm surprised that southern states didn't have more representation but New Hampshire is number one?

According to Jones, there is an even more important reason for residents to seek out some states to purchase beer: taxes. New Hampshire has the highest per capita alcohol consumption because "anyone who is driving through or lives on the border of New Hampshire will probably opt for the 5% or 6% savings, and just go into the state to buy their alcohol there," he said. As a result, it is common for New Hampshire liquor stores to be visited by residents of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine.

Beer Bonus: Andy sent along this link that just might be an addition to many morons bucket lists. However, at $95K, it might go unfulfilled. Beer In Space. Is there beer tax in space?

Fire Soccer

So I know soccer isn't too popular amongst the hoard here but what if it involves soaking a coconut in kerosene for 2 days, lighting it on fire and then playing soccer with it? That's how they roll in East Java. Fire Soccer. I'm guessing the last guy picked for each team ends up being the goalie.

Of course, if fire soccer still does not do it for you, there's always Lingerie Football League. Careful, the video is over an hour long.

The Chicago Way

Bribe Wasn't Big Enough, so city inspector's conviction overturned, appeals court rules. Message: You can take bribes, just be sure to keep it below the limit.

Dinosaur Age Scene

Kinda cool. 100 Million Year Old Spider Attack Found In Amber. I have just one question though. Just how fast was prehistoric tree resin because the way this article reads, it's friggin' scary fast.

It does exist. Sugar Company's Ad Concept: Sweet Pastries Are As Good As Pron.

We probably have the high beer consumption because the state sells all liquor through its own stores. So if you want alcohol from a gas station or grocery store your choices are beer or wine. And who drinks Chardonnay on game day?

I'd recommend a Beretta Tomcat in .32ACP. It's not much bigger than the Berettas chambered for .22LR/.25ACP, but more powerful (for a mouse gun). The Tomcat is what I stuff in a back pocket of my shorts when I can't conceal my Glock M36.

Berettas in general are well-made with a good fit and finish. A nice feature of their pocket pistols is the tip-up barrel design. You don't have to pull the slide to load or unload thechamber.

I don't meet many people day to day, but the one from Penna I talked to was livid about Biden. Here is his take:
"FYI - I turned the TV off before the debate was done last night. Couldn't stand
it and sure wouldn't call it a "debate." Biden is very shrewd., highly
intelligent and must have something going that appeals to the masses to have
been in public office for this long. However, the SOB was rude beyond belief
and I don't think Ryan was prepared for that. Joe would stab his own mother in
the back. And to think someone like that is only a heartbeat away from the
president. "
The other was a woman I was talking with during the debate, and on the fence about the election. She was disgusted by Biden and will vote for Romney now. A Virginia voter too!

I just think 22s, especially short-barreled 22s, have such a limited usefulness that I can't imagine it'd be the right tool for the job. .25s are worse.

The advantage the Beretta 21 has is that it's a tilt-barrel, which is good for really weak hands. But then so is a revolver (maybe).

Also a coon is a little big for a .22 (or worse a .25). If she just wants to scare it get an airsoft. Don't wound an animal and let it take hours or days dying, that sucks ass.

If she's ready to kill it something bigger like a .380 or a .327 (not a typo) can be in a small package without too much recoil.

233 Heh, the NH beer story makes total sense to me. I don't know that it's all CONSUMED here in NH, but it definitely gets bought here, along with a whole lot of liquor across the spectrum. You cross the border from any of the surrounding states into NH and nine times out of ten you're going to find a state liquor store within ten miles of the border.

That always reminds me of one of my favorite Granite State stories. Back when Meldrim Thomson was governor in the 70's he learned that Massachusetts was sending its tax agents into NH to take down the license plate numbers of MA citizens who were buying liquor in our liquor stores, with the plan to charge them for the sales tax after the fact (because Mass is full of Massholes). Thomson didn't take too kindly to another state shouldering into NH's territory, so he had them arrested.

That was back when governors could be awesome without being threatened by union goons and fat thugs (BIRM).

268 249 Pain pump and insulin pump. Automated way to deliver pharmaceuticals. Though it means having such a contraption inserted into you. With a staph infection I would think that is a very bad idea, another spot for the staph to start munching. And besides some of the pumps can be monitored by Wi-Fi and I am waiting for someone to hack the pumps.

I gotcha. I actually am a Type 1 diabetic. I've been telling docs no on insulin pumps for over 10 years now.

252 I did my last bout with staph without prescription pain medicine. Unpleasant but bearable.

It's not actually the infection itself. It's all the pressure put directly on it. I, Uhhh, sit on the wound pretty much all day

Here's a bill I'd like to see introduced, the "Make a Liberal's Dream Come True" act. In it, funding is established to send any US citizen* a free one-way ticket along with a moving allowance to any country in the world that will take them. In exchange they give up their US citizenship for 10 years and if they want to re-apply then, they may.* Hell, maybe even forgive half of any outstanding taxes they owe as an incentive to get them to go.

Anyone who stays is here voluntarily. You can return to the country of your father's dreams, on us. Hate the warmongering imperialists? You can leave. Think you're not getting your fair share here? You can leave. Think doctors chop off limbs for profit, there's a war against women, hate greedy capitalist pigs, think there are too many religious nuts, don't want to live in a country with guns everywhere? This bill is for YOU!

* Like all other current US laws, the MALDCT Act applies equally to undocumented citizens, no ID required. Also, in 9 years we pass a bill that sets quotas for returnees. For every one allowed back in, 10 others must leave first.

Bonus: "unexpectedly" the US turns around its economic calamity within 15 years, shocking its detractors.

270 Biden knows, or should know, that from the military's perspective President Obama imposed an under-resourced Afghan surge, undercut it by announcing the timeline, and interrupted the last fighting season by accelerating the withdrawal.

This skips over the entire, sordid first part:

Barky initially called for a strategic review of the Afghan war. The pentagon review came back with a recommendation for a surge, which Barky didn't like, so the Indonesian Imbecile claimed that because it took 6 months for the review to be completed it was delivered obsolete (as "conditions on the ground have changed" - implying that Barky knew the conditions on the ground better than the commanders on the ground and that the Pentagon would turn in an obsolete review with shitty recommendations because they were so inept) so Barky ordered another strategic review, which took 4 months to complete, after which Barky just made a number up for the surge (after having killed a fighting season) and then the above saga of Barky's intentional harming of our military position continued.

297 Its said you're never more than a few feet from some sort of spider anywhere on the planet. Some are quite small and almost invisible, the size of dust mites.

Outdoors I tolerate anything, indoors I use a size/mobility matrix to decide their fate. Anything prone to walkabouts gets whacked. The littlest one that make a tiny web in a corner and never leave it, I don't bother. They're allies of a sort snarfing up gnats and shit that sneak in. If I can catch a harvester(daddy long legs) and relocate them outside, I do.

When its time to vacuum, and its visible, everything goes in and the ecosystem gets a reboot.

Lovely. Using insulin to murder someone is a very good way to do it. Within a few hours there's no trace of it in your bloodstream. And the needles used to inject insulin are unbelievably tiny, so the odds of catching the injection site are slim.

It's a conundrum. How can whole professions -- media, academia,
publishing, Hollywood -- be so evil and stupid? Surely some of them can
be at least smart enough to see disaster ahead, or decent enough not to
want it to happen? Don't they at least have any sense of
self-preservation? Because I guarantee you that if American society
collapses I am personally going to beat Jon Stewart's head in with a
tire iron and take his canned food.

403 381 What's the summary of Sayet's conclusion?

Posted by: 18-1 at October 12, 2012 11:19 PM (AUeaU)

It's hard to summarize, but from a section of his "modern liberals" video:

- None of the ideas, philosophy, religion, etc. of the past have succeeded in eliminating war, poverty, crime and injustice.

- In order to establish a utopia without these ills, we must stop fighting over what ideas are right, and accept that all ideas are of equal value.

- This requires the rejection of all facts, logic, reason, evidence, truth, morality and decency. These very acts require discrimination--an act of bigotry--which is evil by definition. We must eliminate discrimination by becoming completely indiscriminate.

- Since all ideas are of equal value, they should then produce equal outcomes. The evident fact of un-equal outcomes then becomes de-facto evidence of injustice. Whatever is successful has cheated, exploited, and oppressed. Whatever has failed is a victim of oppression and injustice.

- To make all ideas appear to be equal, what is good, right and successful must be devalued, and what is evil, wrong, and failed must be praised.

You really need to see the though process. The video is not long and it's worth it.

I get not wanting to sit want watch a video, though.

Modern liberalism is largely a parody, a distortion, a *perversion* of the ideals it claims to hold.

Anti-discrimination demands elevating some people over others.

Compassion demands theft.

Tolerance demands disallowing ideas and people.

Enlightenment demands not knowing certain things.

Freedom demands submission to others.

And on and on.

We use the same words but different languages.

In Geometry one way to prove an axiom is false is to subject it to a test. First you declare the axiom is true. Then you follow a path from there using logical steps. At the end of the path you find a contradiction or falsehood. You then conclude your original choice was wrong, and the axiom is proven false.

Sayet claims, rightly, that the Liberal mind can not and will not see the contradiction as proof that the axiom is false.

In other words, they are insane.

Thus Krugman's recitation of the Broken Windows Fallacy as a solution to a depression, which *should* have shocked and appalled any first-year economics student, yet was printed in the "Paper of Record" (for the left).

It's an unutterably stupid idea, and yet They Can't Quit It.

I disagree. Judging liberals by the their statements, and calling them insane because their stated views are at odds, not only with reality, but each other presumes that what they publicly say has any relation to what they believe.

If you instead judge them on their actions, things make more sense.

1) I am better then others - morally and intellectually.
2) Therefore I, or at least those like me, should rule, as such superior people would produce a superior society given the opportunity.
3) The lesser elements of mankind cannot understand the complexities of my intellect, which just further proves that they need a strong hand to rule them.
4) Since they are too stupid to submit willingly, we must deceive them. To achieve this, I must not only repeat the lies my leaders tell me, but force myself to *believe* them. Reality is just a construct anyway.
5) Once we gain sufficient power, we will usher in utopia.
6) If utopia is not achieved, we have not gained sufficient power, or our leaders were not truly liberals.

449 381 from the vid:

:
[...]
What I discovered is that the Modern Liberal looks back on 50,000 years, 100,000 years of human civilization, and knows only one thing for sure: that none of the ideas that mankind has come up with–none of the religions, none of the philosophies, none of the ideologies, none of the forms of government–have succeeded in creating a world devoid of war, poverty, crime, and injustice. So they’re convinced that since all of these ideas of man have proved to be wrong, the real cause of war, poverty, crime, and injustice must be found–can only be found–in the attempt to be right.

If nobody ever thought they were right, what would we disagree about? If we didn’t disagree, surely we wouldn’t fight. If we didn’t fight, of course we wouldn’t go to war. Without war, there would be no poverty; without poverty, there would be no crime; without crime, there would be no injustice. It’s a utopian vision, and all that’s required to usher in this utopia is the rejection of all fact, reason, evidence, logic, truth, morality, and decency–all the tools that you and I use in our attempts to be better people, to make the world more right by trying to be right, by siding with right, by recognizing what is right and moving toward it.
[...]
What you have is people who think that the best way to eliminate rational thought, the best way to eliminate the attempt to be right, is to work always to prove that right isn’t right and to prove that wrong isn’t wrong. You see this in John Lennon’s song “Imagine”: “Imagine there’s no countries.” Not imagine great countries, not imagine defeat the Nazis, but imagine no religions, and the key line is imagine a time when anything and everything that mankind values is devalued to the point where there’s nothing left to kill or die for…

And realized it was already late at night. Tell me I didn't miss anything vital, 'cause I have to go find something else to do.

I was gonna say,
Joe Biden made a deal with his dentist to show off the dental work all night for undisclosed reimbursement,
then I saw Nevergiveup apologize for the dentists. So I didn't say that.

Spent way too much time manipulating photos today for VP Showdown 2012 -- what I saw going on between the candidates. Maybe grinworthy.

Yes...ish. From what I recall he just left and the writers were left with the question of what to do, so they dispatched him permanently. Watched it live and it was a hell of a shock and freaked a lot of people out.

570 I'm on a tear. I've just found out that as a retiree, my health insurance is going to go up again, by a lot. This has been going on since that Obamacare bill got passed.

My big concern is what will happen when I see my union teacher, very liberal sister in law.

The last time I saw her she started on this rant about TFG's EO to make it just fine and dandy for illegal aliens who were brought her by their parents to take jobs. She got into a whole Obamaesque hate-the-rich thing because two well to do women she knows didn't like the executive order. I managed to refute everything she said, I remained controlled and non-aggressive.

But the mood I'm in now over my health insurance skyrocketing since the bastard passed his healthcare bill, I'm afraid that the next time I see her the police will be called.

"Coming from rural Idaho, Mecham said he was aware how important public broadcasting was in sparsely populated areas that receive no other signals over the air."
Oh? Just how important is it beyond the dumb notion that it must be "important" somehow?Oxygen is important, as is food and shelter, and I guess clothing. PBS probably comes in at number 140,000 on the list of important shit.
And glancing at the PBS coverage map on the FTC website it looks like PBS covers about 1/4th of the US map, with rural areas being most if not all of the places that don't receive PBS. I'd look closer but the 30MB.pdf coverage map crashed my browser.

620 They say the amber (tree sap) flowed over the wasp and spider but my guess is a droplet fell on them and transfixed them for the next drop or two which finished them off.

Sap can be fast as it is not as viscous at the point of origin than after being exposed to air. Witness maple syrup which is from maple tree sap.

Depends on the sap, the tree and the time of year (season) on how fast it flows.

I've seen certain pine tree saps which can be quite fluid when just exuded from the tree.

yeah that is my guess too. like a drop of motor oil just happening to fall on them. it just so happened that it hit squarely on the spider. if liquid amber really act as quickly as it is claimed to have acted in this story then there would be all sorts of amber fossils of insects and other critters "in the act" of doing whatever they are doing. but there aren't.

Actually, yeah. Most of the trees from then are extinct and it was hotter, so it's difficult to say, exactly, but it's hard to imagine that both the spider and wasp were preserved in such a position from a flow, alone, no matter how quickly it moved. You'd think that they'd be pushed around into a more random situation.

635 @614

you got it -- the only "time travel" is going forward through time!

the original poster, who *really* ought to refrain from attempting to make science jokes, apparently missed the sheepish retraction wherein it was conceded that the engineers had failed to account for relativistic time dilation when calculating the speed at which the satellite-to-earth signal was xmitted.

you're reading that properly: some engineer decided he would disprove einstein by simply failing to use the framework of einstein's special relativity theory in his calculations. laff.

(for the less science-inclined: "einstein is wrong because when i do things the wrong way, i get the wrong answer...no srsly!1111!111!!1" o.o)

things like this happen all the time when you let engineers pretend do be doing actual science!

anyway, my favourite cat joke was "do you have any sodium hypoboronite? NaBrO". so stupid. i feel like that would go over rather well on a high school chemistry test these days. i liked the couplet about the chemist's boy drinking sulphuric acid, too, but then i'm a sucker for some cheezy rhymes :3

638 @631 I remember shock waves running through the habitual Left when Newt's crowd showed up, and when W won. You know what snaps them right out of it?

I call it my 9/12 strategy. I tell them what I would have done the day after 9/11, and all of a sudden they realize that the awful rightwingers in charge really are the moderates we say they are.

After kinda-sorta sos'lists hear from me about what really ought to be done, guys like Mitt and Paul suddenly look like their best pals. Puts a quick end to the suicide talk.

Just as a for instance, try telling one you've gone long on Cat stock, because somebody will have to dig all the mass graves, and it's another corollary of Broken Windows. They'll stay alive just to piss you off. The downside is, we still have to support them, and put up with the mewling.

Seeing the open bomb-bay doors on that B-17, I have to mention that today I stood inside the open bomb-bay doors of a B-52H at the Miramar air show. First time, and surprised at how small it looked. Especially for the large nukes in the arsenal at the time the aircraft was first used.

Asked the co-pilot if he had a cowboy hat to do the Slim Pickens thing - he said the topic actually had come up with other B-52 colleagues, and I shared with him the trivia (think I read it here first) that in Pickens' famous survival-kit line about "having a good time in Vegas", the city in the script was actually Dallas, but had been changed and dubbed in in post-production due to the Kennedy assasination, which took place at the same time.

Asked him how old he was - 26 (!!!!). He looked 20. Asked him how old his plane was - 52! Told him how I recalled when the first B-52 crew younger than the plane came along - back in the 1980s, and how it was sort of a big deal for defense geeks.

Was astonished to learn that he's based in Minot, ND. He sort of agreed. For missile silos - perfect. For air operations? He was stoked to be in San Diego - said they rarely ever touch down anywhere outside NDduring all their training flights.

As feared, my fundamental gloom about things was pierced by the awesome energy, dedication, anddecency of all the young Marines Italked with today (and thanked). Dissimilar air combat training pilot, UAV operator, LAV commander, couple of youngsters who run a mobilemini air-control tower, V-22 Osprey crews, some WWII vets who I could actually tell something new about Corsairs and Wildcats. Have been so torn and furious at how the country these magnificent folks protect and serve has been degraded and damaged (and not just in the last 3 years).Have regretted myown service(civilian) in several far flung trouble spots of national concern. And these damn guys go and ruin everything byhaving the time of their lives while playing with the greatest toys ever devised.

Oh - and the F-22 must be the first aerobatic combat jet - it was doing rather ridiculous things usually seen only in custom-built aerobatic aircraft. However, still not soldon the cost-benefit thing with it (now a capped program) or even more so the F-35.

Hey CDR M,

Please pass this along to Ace, as it is my gift to him for this October:

The State Department has made it obvious that we cannot blame the State Department for gross U.S. security failures in Benghazi.
The White House has made it obvious that we cannot blame the White House for gross U.S. security failures in Benghazi.

That leaves only one culprit.

Obviously, it was that idiot-monkey Ambassador Stevens and his own negligent Consulate who is to blame for the gross U.S. security failures in Benghazi.
Yeah, that's the ticket! And also those cowardly Navy Seals that didn't have the first clue as to how to fight back against a mortal enemy.

It's all so obvious now: WE MUST BLAME THE VICTIMS of this Heinously Murderous TERRORIST ATTACK.
- THEY SO DID THIS TO THEMSELVES!

I emphasize U.S. security failures here to bring attention to the one lame counter-argument that is available to the Administration (which is BOTH the White House and ITS State Department): That it's really only the terrorists' fault.
But failures of U.S. security can never be the fault of the terrorists.

Joe just proved he was the asshat we always knew him to be. He was like an angry monkey flinging poo.

750 For your daughters B

Took off work a little early
To walk my daughter home from school
She started asking questions
The way 5 year olds do
She said "Billy tried to kiss me daddy
What about these birds and bees"?
I said "Go ask your momma"
Then I pulled her close to me

First you take some vows, two bands of gold
Till death do you part, to have and to hold
Love patient and kind, you'll find that's enough
That's how you make love

752 Trust me: New Hampshire is where everyone in New England buys their booze. The New Hampshire government knows this and capitalized on it. They built state-run liquor stores right on all the interstates, about a mile from the border to any of the other states.

Ironically, though, you can't buy beer at the state liquor stores; you have to go to a proper liquor store to do that. So, I've no doubt that New Hampshire would have an even more commanding lead in the hard liquor category.
