Twelve Years Ago Today: The Bombing of the USS Cole

In memory of the 17 US Navy sailors who lost their lives in an attack by Al Qaeda on the USS Cole. The is the Cole Memorial, at Norfolk Naval Station.

Cole memorial2.jpg

We let our guard down or show weakness, this is what they do. Just like last month. Only this time they were thoughtful enough to tell us they were coming.

39 other sailors were injured in the attack. Below the fold, the names of those who perished.

24 Friends: Another patriotic solder needs our help: Col. Allen West is down by 9 points in Florida -- the avalanche of dirty tricks and slanderous videos by the Dims is overwhelming. I got this in an email from Newsmax today, asking for donations to help West, Mia Love, Tim Scott, and Vernon Parker.

Dear Patriot,

It seems the relentless and overwhelming deluge of negative ads is taking a
toll on Allen's campaign.

The Democrats are absolutely determined to destroy every single black
conservative running for office this year. We must fight back hard and do it
NOW!

While this poll of Allen West's race was conducted by the Democrats, I'm told
that other surveys also show that Allen is in the fight of his life.

This is VERY, VERY bad news.

These polls show that a black conservative can be ruined if you simply spend enough
on horrible negative attack ads.

We have to help reverse this tide. We must stand up to these smear
campaigns. We need to defend Allen West, Tim Scott, Mia Love, and Vernon
Parker.

What the Democrats are doing is vile and despicable. But they will keep it
up as long as they believe they can win.

For an incumbent like Allen West to be down nine points or even to be
tied is a very dangerous sign.

And if the liberals are able to crush good conservatives like Allen West, Tim
Scott, Mia Love, and Vernon Parker this year, how many others will be willing to
step forward and put themselves and their families through a similar ordeal in
the future?

That's what we are fighting for.

Fight back today!

30 Joey Bin Biden, #20:

Good one.

I couldn't expect that Ryan's preparation would be so deep on all subjects that he could school Biden on technical details of nuclear weapons, but I think the Romney campaign ought, somehow, to make this point:

- The president has said he will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons capability. So have we. The argument is over where to draw the red line.

- We define that as having enough plutonium or weapons-grade uranium to make a bomb. Once they have that, the bomb is sure to follow.

- The vice president apparently defines it as having the weapon fully assembled, and possibly (we're not sure what he meant) mounted on a delivery system.

Coming back on topic: all honors to the sailors lost aboard the Cole; and rest in peace, CSM Plumley.

According to Joey "giggles" Biden and Barack "I killed Osama" Obama, Al qaeda is no longer a problem. They got Bin Laden. Killed him Dead May 1, 2011. So the same organization that bombed the African embassies in 1998, and attacked the USS Cole in 2000, and attacked NYC and DC on Sept 11, 2001 is no longer a threat. Nevermind that this Al Qaeda is the same jihadist organization that attacked our consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. And according to Lt. Col. Wood is better organized in Libya than we were.

Bin Laden is dead, Al Qaeda is not a threat. Do not tell me otherwise. Do not worry, there is no threat. Barack killed Osama, the headbad guy. Just like in the movies, the threat is over once the head bad guy is dead, and everything is all flowers and puppydogs better.

57 What happened to the USS Cole was a spontaneous protest. We are told by the intelligence community that what happened was that a group of Yemeni fishermen became enraged when they heard that pork was being served in the Cole's galleys, offending their religious sensitivities. They just happened to have a boatload of high explosives handy to demonstrate their anger. We condemn in the strongest terms the Cole's mess specialists, who deliberately provoked their generous Arab hosts by brazenly serving bacon.

68 My gut is approaching 50-50 on this election. I've thought all along that it was winnable, but victory would be tough--probably 3 to 2 in Obama's favor. The bitter primary season made me drop down to maybe 2 to 1 in Obama's favor, but picking Ryan moved it back to 3 to 2.

All the relentless bad polling and unbelievable media bias was really starting to worry me, until Romney's debate again moved it to 3 to 2.

This week, though, the wheels appear *that* close to coming off the Democrats. Right now I think they have a much better chance of imploding than Romney does.

If he bests President Boo-boo in the next debate, Mitt will come out of it the clear favorite. No matter what Nate Silver says.

96 Regarding the West comment, there are some scamming sites out there soliciting contributions that then don't go to the candidates. I don't know that the one mentioned is a scam, but as always, be careful.

I haven't heard anything about West being in trouble either. He was ahead a couple of weeks ago.

97 ie.... whoever wins the vote total in each district gets that vote, with the overall winner of the State getting the two electoral votes for the Senators... (that way winning a State is a bonus, but not everything...).

That's been kicked around before but iirc that would more or less result in a permanent Republican presidency.

Here's the 2008 Presidential popular vote results - http://1.usa.gov/RDeDU9 - it's eyeopening to see just how coastal the Dems' voting block is.

It would really contain the voter fraud, too. The smallish states like NE and ME feel free to do it because it doesn't make a difference.

I think that qualifies as a "first world problem." But I actually agree with you- someone who would kill their own child is not someone who can be trusted ever again in society. If someone is that dangerous to society, execution, not lifetime imprisonment, is the correct answer.

113 What we need more than congressional district-level electoral votes is more congressional districts. The size of Congress has not grown since Hawaii became a state in 1959. That's ridiculous. There are too many people in most Congressional districts now and it is impossioboe for one person to adequately serve or reflect the views of 600,000 people. Jonah Goldberg proposed a few years ago that we go to a 600-member House.

122 Biden's behavior about the stimulus was awful, although Ryan could have done better at rebutting it.

Ryan: "I'm the representative of [whatever] district in Wisconsin, so when the federal government takes $800 billion of the people's money to dole out, of course I'm going to represent my constituents and ask for some of it to be sent back home to Wisconsin. I'm not going to roll over and let you pass it out to the administration's cronies and deprive Wisconsin of its fair share."

And Biden...ugh! He really did act like he was some royal magistrate dispensing *his* money. Something about "I'll entertain any request you send."

Vomit.

123 Whatever happened to the story about the Libyan staff asking for help during the attack? Benghazi is right next to the Med. Where were our 6th Fleet units at the time of the attack? Any carriers or amphibious ships nearby? Flight time from US air bases in the Med/ fleet unit positions at the time to Benghazi? What were our options/ capabilities & how long did the attack last? When was the first report of the attack received? Did admin officials make decisions in response to any pleas for help? Was any input solicited from or given to admin officials by any of the Joint Chiefs while the attack was still in progress?

Just curious whether Obama or other officials denied *any kind of military support* during the time of the attack, as it appears the attack lasted some time.

Ryan was getting slapped down by the Dominatrix Moderater, on nearly every rebuttal.
But at least he got the dig in that Biden was "supposed to be looking after it".

One of the really bad things about the Stimulus...was all the govt jobs they created with it.
Those add to the deficit spending, to keep them going.
