Ryan Wins CNN's Poll of Undecided Likely Voters, 48-44%
Also Wins on Likability, Ryan 53% Biden 43%

Who wants cake?

Not a crushing victory, but a victory nonetheless -- the sitting VP was bested by the challenger.

So Romney passed the Threshold test -- spectacularly -- and Ryan passed it as well.

And in both debates, they won.

Alex Castellantos on CNN had a point: The post-debate buzz will be about Biden's buffoonish mugging.

I hate to say this, but as I said in the liveblog, Biden's Mission Number One was to reassure and re-energize the base. He did that. He at least stopped some Democrats from defecting to Romney, or deciding not to vote.

But he did play exclusively to the Democratic Client Groups -- all the groups with their hands out for federal money. It was all Tamanny Hall, ward-heeler stuff -- vote for me, I will put Cash Money in your pocket.

Where's yo' dollah?

I don't think that will help with independents and those on the fence. Those people were already with the Democrats. Those who rely on the Democratic Client State for their income will, naturally, vote like their income depends on it.

Still, Biden did accomplish that much.

But the main trajectory of the race is that Romney and Ryan are capable, knowledgeable, pleasant men with serious ideas about the future of this country, better qualified for office than the men in office now, and Obama and Biden are still pushing musty old welfare plans from the late 1960's.

Likability: Pollsters say that likability sets the upper bound for your level of support. If people don't like you, they won't vote for you.

This debate will not strongly impact the race, but note that Ryan -- the crazy extremist who wants to kill your grandparents -- is viewed as likable by more than a majority of the public, whereas Biden has... the Democratic Client System base.

Biden Lied About Voting Against The Wars. He claimed he wisely voted against them, out of concern for their cost.

In fact, he voted in favor of both.

AP Poll: CAC tweeted an AP poll showing Ryan well ahead but it now seems like there's a lot of doubt on this.

CAC gets tipped to polls early by a source. Most of these are correct. Every once in a while, his source is wrong.

Laughing Boy: He played to the MSNBC crowd. But at what cost?

91 I watched, I evaluated and concluded. To make my position more succinct, here is what I agree with and care not to personally opine on:

In the closing rounds, Ryan spoke calmly, chiding the president for
divisiveness and broken promises. Biden nearly comically told us he
never said anything he didn’t mean. Ryan gave a classic closing
statement, actually asking viewers for their votes. Biden whined about
getting shortened on time. Raddatz must have been exhausted. Any
audience members hanging on certainly were.

It was the most bizarre performance in any debate in my memory. Biden
was so obnoxious, so over-the-top, that it is hard to see how
independent voters, especially women, would find him tolerable, let
alone effective. Arguing with the female moderate, jabbing his finger
and constantly interrupting both Raddatz and Ryan, he came across like a
bully.

Raddatz at times was unable to stand up to Biden’s bullying, but she
hung in there, never losing her poise. She returned some of his jabs.
She was a more active moderate, to be sure, than Jim Lehrer. But the
debate was certainly lively, and she was exquisitely fair.

Losers: Biden; the aide who forgot to tell him there was a split screen; incivility.

Winners: Ryan; civility.

100 I would have to see Ryan pause one time while lunatic Joe was laughing while Ryan was talking about a serious subject like Iran, and in a very concerned voice ask Joe if he was OK. And point put that the nuclear issue in Iran is a serious issue where lives are at stake, so he his inappropriate laughtter couldn't be about that. And ask him again if he was OK.

Posted by: JBS at October 11, 2012 11:53 PM (lZE/o)

101 If not for Raddatz, I think Ryan would have clearly won because Biden was so deranged. But she kept after Ryan about being more specific, which gave Biden a chance to act like an audience applauding, rather than the cackling, obtrusive loon he was being most of the time. I don't think she ever helped Ryan.

This was a boxing match where one guy has weights in his gloves, the referee is a bit on the take, and the other guy is trying to be Gentlemen Jim Corbett following the Marquess of Queensberry. Ryan's unflagging sportsmanship impresses a neutral audience, but it's more of a wash on the judges' score cards.

If people watched to the end, that one sigh Biden made while Ryan was being very thoughtful and serious was horrible--an exclamation mark on his entire jerkwad night.

105 69 Posted by: chique d'afrique - I agree. I have always thought Biden is the smarter one. He knows his stuff (or at least he acts like it). Obama can barely talk without (literally) hemming and hawing. Obam just repeats a few things over and over, but Biden knows stuff since he's actually been involved in the Senate, and the Vice-Presidency, for decades. I'm not saying Biden is right, just that he can talk. Funny thing that the guy the country considers a walking gaffe machine can talk policy better than the POTUS.

Yup, if you noticed, The last half of the debate, Biden started getting frustrated. It was because he wasn't getting a reaction out of Ryan.

187 I think Ryan did what he had to do but he could have been more assertive. The Romney campaign knew Biden was going to run with the "young punk" schtick and planned according but I know Ryan could have been more assertive than he was. That said, he won on substance and Biden's behavior tonight was even worse than Gore's back in '00.

Biden is doing schtick -- it's what he imagines uneducated white guys might say.

284 I think Ryan did what he had to do but he could have been more assertive. The Romney campaign knew Biden was going to run with the "young punk" schtick and planned according but I know Ryan could have been more assertive than he was. Raddatzwas no Moderator That Night
InSeptember, 2009 my wife and I had dinner at the Red House Restaurant in Cambridge, near Harvard sq. An ABC News van was parked close to the restaurant.
We were seated at a table next to a 50ish woman and two men. The woman at the next table was drinking white wine with her table mates and talking loudly about, primarily, the Kennedys. Everyone at the Red House deck area could hear what this woman was saying. The boorish creature'spersonality was obviously too big for a small restaurant and she could care less whether her loud blithering would bother other diners.
I tried to ignore the lady, and concentrate on having a nice dinner, but the neighbor lady's voice could be heard in the next county. Her party ordered up one bottle after another. The lady was raving about how great the staff of Ted Kennedy was. On and on and on. "Greatest staff in history"."Brilliant staff."This went on for at least an hour. It was one of the weirdest dinner conversations I have ever heard. Her table mates seemed to be trying to humor her and just make agreeable noises.
While praising Ted Kennedy's staff, the lady spoke disparagingly of Ted Kennedy, who had just died a few days earlier. She also had no use for Ted's brothers Bobby and Jack.
Throughout her monologue she seemed to use reporting jargon so it became obvious she was an ABC reporter or producer. It was also totally obvious,as evidenced by the array of empty wine bottles, and slurred speech, that the lady was loaded to the gills.
When I got home I checked the ABC news site and learned that the woman seated next to us spewing dirt about the Kennedys was ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz. Positive ID. Her voice was instantly recognizable--even after several bottles of wine.
I saw an ABC NewsTed Kennedy tribute clip of Raddatz mournfully praising the "Lion of the Senate" that was directly opposite tothebitterdisdain for Ted K she expressed so vehemently in a public place.
Strange but true.

345 Again, as with the first debate, I only saw the visual (I was on the elliptical watching Predator on my portable DVD).

As far as the visual went, it seemed pretty even. Biden didn't seem awkward and uncomfortable. Of course, he could have been saying anything (and probably was).

Ryan seemed pretty good. There were times when he was looking down, which I would have advised against, but overall seemed comfortable.

My advice to any Republican/conservative on TV: NEVER look bored or unengaged; ALWAYS look happy and thoughtful; REMEMBER that the Media are WAITING for you to pick your nose, scratch your ear, far, fiddle with your teeth, etc, etc, etc, and if you do any of those things, THAT will be all over the news.

There's a story Tony Curtis tells about making "Some Like it Hot." Billy Wilder told him and Jack Lemmon that they had to be perfect on every take, because when Marilyn Monroe had a good take, they were going to use that one, no matter what the other actors were doing, "even if we were scratching our balls."

Republicans, you are Tony Curtis. The Demoncraps are Marilyn Monroe. The Media is going to enshrine them against you. Remember that always.

365 So here's the question:

Raddatz quite plainly justified all the concern that Tucker Carlson and the rest had raised about her background. She was an out-and-out Team Obama shill, and she was quite clearly giving Biden the run of the house.

But in doing so did she give him enough room to hang himself?

If she'd kept the lid on him, would his stupid-ass I-know-something-you-don't-Axelrod-got-me-the-questions-in-advance smirk have been so evident? Would his interruptions have been so offensive?

We dodged a bullet here.

The deck was clearly stacked against us, and given Raddatz' behavior and how the whole thing went off I'm inclined to believe just about every possible conspiracy story on this one.

But it appears the best they managed for all their skulduggery was something approaching a tie on the issues, and some very, very poor optics on their side.

Posted by: JEM at October 12, 2012 12:39 AM (o+SC1)

366 My theory on Biden's grins, lears, snorts, and continuous interruptions: he was nervous about his early LibyaLies, worried they'd become a focus, his nervousness led to overcompensating in the "jam Ryan" debate strategy.

By the time they signaled to him to tone it down near the end, it was too late.

Heheh.

390 Biden made the same mistake as most of the idiots on the Left made after the Romney/Obama debate.

He assumed that Romney won by making the other side look dumb.

But what they don't understand is that Romney used reality and factoids as his weapon and not personal attack. Since Democrats have always had to lie to make a case they can't pull of the aggressive tactic like Romney did, and it comes across as the playground Bully.

Romney learned this tactic in the Business World, and that why Democrats have no idea what the hell to do to win this election.

I'd personally call it a draw...Luntz's dunces did, and the snap polls generally favor Ryan, but it's still just a VP debate. Ryan came off as knowledgeable and respectful of the "elder statesman" Biden, which should help him pass the "heartbeat away" test. Biden came across as testy, condescending, and at times buffoonish, so even a draw is a win for team R^2, as the momentum remains unchanged. All Ryan had to do was hold the line, and he accomplished that. The onus is now on O to change the momentum in the next two debates. I seriously doubt he has the chops to pull that off. I'll also mention, again, as first posted by CAC, that OFA is pulling staffers out of MI to defend OH.

Polls on CNN and CNBC (Drudge) show Ryan winning. He won on some polls for "undecideds." Though how anyone could be undecided is a mystery to me.
Joe Biden was rude, condescending, and a complete jerk, interrupting Ryan 82 times. He laughed and shook his head on split screen. His smile was creepy, like Sandusky creepy. Then...with fifteen minutes to go, his sugar high (or whatever he was on) ran out of steam. He was a colossal jerk, no two ways about it. The only people pleased are the debased base who would vote for Obama even if he told them he ate puppies three meals a day. Paul Ryan was himself: polite, staying to subject and policy, and did a remarkable job of not being rude back to Joe Biden, even when double-teamed by the stupid moderator who has abused Botox and had Obama at her wedding. The End.

Posted by: ChristyBlinky, unbanned, ready to get this done at October 12, 2012 12:47 AM (baL2B)

400 Ryan won the debate.

The takeaway from this will be that Biden is a rude jackass. It may have played well to the MSNBC crowd, but outside of that, it was a disaster for Democrats. These debates are mainly about the unengaged voters that decide elections, and the universal reaction was disgust towards Biden's clownish behavior.

That being said, Ryan was a little bitch imo, and I've ruled him out for ever being White House material. Maybe the "yes, ma'am" choir boy plays well with independent voters, but I want someone more assertive. Perhaps letting himself be a punching bag and letting Biden make a fool of himself was all part of the strategy, but he let both the moderator and Biden get away with murder.

Romney should have picked Chris Christie for VP.

i have to admit. the moderator did seem to favor crazy uncle joe, but that first question on benghazi right out of the gate was quite a doozy. i expected that ryan would have to force that into the debate. actually, the more i think about it, the more i think ryan won by quite a margin. i think it's most important to seem as though you are serious and having a serious discussion about really important issues, like our ambassador being raped in the streets of a foreign country after being denied a security detail in libya. ryan did this and was clearly very knowledgeable on foreign policy and absolutely owned the budget discussion. that said, i do have to agree that it looks as though the vp has it more together than the guy in charge, and joe biden is a fool's fool.

416 Biden do do the R/R team a few favors though: he made it obvious where Obama will try to attack Romney...Takeaway points for me:

Romney must state, very very plainly that that cutting the mortgage interest deduction for people claiming less than $XX interest is not part of the plan. He must do this, in my opinion...it was a weak spot in the first debate and it will be used against him again. He needs to show a number. Use the same formula banks use. For example, set the line at what the banks now consider a jumbo loan, which I believe is 630K, per Fannie Mae. Mortage interest on loans that exceed that is disallowed (I'm being simplistic here, but bear with me).

That telegraphs two messages: R/R is NOT going to increase taxes on middle-income taxpayers, and sorry if you have a jumbo, we're limited the interest deduction. Who does he lose in that calculation? Upper middle class voters. Mebbe. When Reagan eliminated the credit card interest deduction, it didn't hurt him at all.

Second: Romney must again say it clearly: at RETIREMENT a younger person (today) gets the option: stay in traditional Medicare, or if you can find a better deal in the private sector, take the same money and go buy it...AND he needs to say...if you take no action, you're automatically still in Medicare.

Reason: Biden insinuated that older people (like me) will be too doddering to know what to do. Romney needs to make it clear that if you don't do a thing or are confused, the default remains federal Medicare.

I think you may be right. The 1st Romney/ Obama debate and now this Ryan/ Biden one have been extraordinary, and (if R/R win) will go down in history as extraordinary, for very different reasons.Romney's debate performance was arguably the best debate performance by a presidential candidate since debates have been televised. And Biden's debate performance was arguably the most grotesque, bizarre, offputting, disrespectful unpresidential performance by a major candidate since debates have been televised. If R/R win, I think those debates will be famous (and in the second case infamous) for decades to come.

445 The purpose of calling someone a liar then was not merely to refute their ideas or arguments. It was to nullify them, to eliminate them from participation in politics. That's what is so unsettling about a David Axelrod or David Plouffe following accusations of dishonesty and lies with "whether that person should sit in the Oval Office." And that is followed by President Obama himself feeding the new line in stump speeches without himself ever using the L-word.

This Obama campaign is saying, We don't want to compete with Mitt Romney. We want to obliterate him.

NV03 Debate. Incumbent Joe Heck (GOP) was smooth and well spoken. His
opponent was wooden and did nothing but repeat Dem talking points
without passion.

NV04 Debate. The Dem (Horsford) came across as a know-it-all

"there he goes again" comment about how his opponent misrepresents him

1896, "aggressive, exuberant, touchy," Amer.Eng., with -y (2) + feist "small dog," earlier fice, fist (Amer.Eng., 1805); short for fysting curre "stinking cur," attested from 1520s, from M.E. fysten, fisten "break wind" (mid-15c.); related to O.E. fisting "stink," from P.Gmc. *fistiz- "a fart," said to be from PIE *pezd- (see fart), but there are difficulties.

Dreaming of deeds that we mean to do,
All complete, in a minute or two--
Something noble and wise and good,
Done by merely wishing we could.
We've forgotten, but--never mind,
Brother, thy tail hangs down behind!"

Song of the Bandar-log [Monkey People], by Rudyard Kipling

or clarify something."

Don't forget the feces flinging. That's the fun part.

536 New blog post:

New post: When Congressmen Attack!

"Looks like things have gotten a wee bit testy between Congressional rivals Rep. Brad Sherman and Rep. Howard Berman. They are both vying for the newly drawn 30th Congressional District in California. Due to California’s new “Jungle Primary,” where the top two vote getters regardless of party advance to the November election, the 30th Congressional district features two entrenched Democrats vying for the same seat with a fury reminiscent of the Mensheviks/Bolsheviks a hundred years ago, or perhaps Stalin vs. Trotsky?"

I never smile if I can help it. Showing one's teeth is a submission
signal in primates. When someone smiles at me, all I see is a chimpanzee
begging for its life.

I knew all along Ryan would "pass the test."

You can't fake decency.

Which is also why Biden loses.

549 Ryan won despite the miserable and ineffective moderating, with the she-bat allowing Biden to tramp all over the timing and continuous interrupting, and the obviously deranged Biden.

Gawd! What an oafish buffoon.......someone needs to seriously tell this old guy that he's just not that funny. It was almost sad to watch some old gezzer laughing at his own jokes and thinking everyone was laughing WITH him.

And, I was too busy watching to see if his false teeth fell out during one of his rampages.
