| Holy Shit: Washington Post Runs Op-Ed Asking Why Mitt Romney Isn't Richer, and If He Isn't Richer, Doesn't That Disqualify Him From the Presidency?Guess the debate and the ensuing polls are really panicking the liberals, eh?Mitt Romney is worth $250 million. Why so little? Mitt Romney is indisputably a very rich man. And if he is elected president on Nov. 6, he will become one of the wealthiest people ever to hold the office. But exactly how wealthy is Romney? The figure that gets tossed around is $250 million in net worth — meaning the total value of his assets, financial and others, minus any debts. Mitt Romney's $250 million net worth is much smaller than that of the other big players in the private-equity and leveraged buyout business, as listed in the latest Forbes 400 list of the richest people in America. Only $250 million? Really? It’s a big number, but frankly, it seems low. Given the industry in which he made his fortune (private equity), the era when he made it (the 1980s and 1990s) and the wealth of his peers in that business (mostly billionaires), Romney should be worth a good bit more than that. Why isn’t he? ...The article then goes through his listed assets, suggesting that Romney might be understating his wealth, based on... well, nothing, really. It then tries to dream up reasons why Romney shouldn't be richer. It doesn't credit any of them for being true. But one of the reasons pretty much explains it all -- the private equity market took off, and entered a "Golden Age," the year after Romney left Bain. That pretty much ends the matter, doesn't it? The first billion is the hardest, and Bain only made its first billion right around the time Romney left. After that, Bain racked up the billions; but the first one was the tough one. And then Romney left to pursue a career of public service. But the writer is unconvinced. Leaving us with two possibilities-- either Romney is lying about his wealth, or Romney is stupid and cannot be our President. Does it really matter if Romney is worth $250 million, $1 billion or more? Rich is rich after all, right? I think it does, politically as well as substantively. Politically, the alternatives are not great. If he were perceived as the first real billionaire to run for president, it would only exacerbate popular doubts about how someone living so removed from the concerns of average Americans — or even just 47 percent of them — could effectively represent them. And if he is not a billionaire, doesn’t it suggest that he was not a great private-equity investor after all, thus torpedoing his claim to understand how to create jobs and get the economy back on track? Something to keep in mind on Nov. 6.I think we should all rise from our seats and applaud the Washington Post for this. There is hackery, there is partisanship, and then there is... this. This is resplendent. Congratulations, Washington Post. You are now officially beyond mockery. Comments1

Additional reasons Mitt's not richer:
1) He gave away his entire inheritance. I'd bet lots of people he worked with kept theirs. 2) Mitt gave 30% of his income to charity last year. We know he's ALWAYS given @ least 10%. How many millions is that over the course of a lifetime? Posted by: Shawn at October 06, 2012 07:02 PM (/lltO) 27

Here's one logical reason he's not richer: Since he tithes a minimum of 10% of his pre-tax income to his church annually, he's given away hundreds of millions of dollars over the years that would have added to his assets and grown even larger had he not given it away. But if he were worth $500 million or even a billion, the libs would be even more outraged. Poor Mitt can't win. Neither can rich Mitt.

Plus, Mitt has used a lot of his own money on his campaigns (for governor, and president in 200 If the Romneys had been more selfish with their wealth (like the Obamas), they'd probably be worth a billion or so. They said that he gave so much to charity to reduce his tax burden and also said that giving to the Mormon Church wasn't a legtimate charity. Barky also made grunts and groans about reducing the charitable deduction back in 2008, claiming that it was unfair that those in higher tax brackets got higher percentage reductions from the same dollar donations - i.e. he argued for the fairness of a flat tax ... for charitable deductions. I seem to recall that the tax deduction for charitable contributions is limited each year to 50% of your Adjusted Gross Income, with excess amounts having the ability to roll forward into future tax years until exhausted. That and total Itemized Deductions are further reduced in steps as your Taxable Income increases over certain threshholds.

I was distraught in 2000 when All Gore lost and when John Kerry lost in 2004. When your a Democrat, it is a tribal mentality and people who do not agree or think like you are the enemy. It is a cultural thing as well. I remember seriously thinking that we needed to get amnesty to get all the illegals to vote for us to keep the evil repukes out forever. I was fine with vote fraud only when our side was doing it because the ends justified the means. Brainwashed.
The thing that caused me to have an epiphany was actually a conservative friend and talk radio. I would "listen" to the other side to make myself feel all high and mighty and "moderate" aka extreme liberal. Little did I know that the whole time I was listening, I realized I started agreeing with them more and more. I listened mainly to Michael Savage because he would criticize Republicans and Michael Medved because he took a lot of dem callers. The problem was, a lot like the Romney Obama debate, the debates there were so lobsided that even I became persuaded by the hosts on them to become a Republican. Michael Medved is really good at finding common ground with democrats by phrasing questions in ways Newt does where 60-70% of Americans agree with. So yeah its probably a tl:dr but there you go. I almost needed counseling in 2000 because my whole world crashed down around me since NO ONE could possibly vote for a dirty nasty REPUBLICAN. From the WaPo: "Does it really matter if Romney is worth $250 million, $1 billion or more? Rich is rich after all, right? I think it does, politically as well as substantively." If we are to go down this path, then we should also ask the following questions: 1. Vice President, and former Senator Joe ("I have a high IQ" or some such shit, yet bounced from running for President ... for cheating in college) Biden, was the 49-th wealthiest Senator, and he's been in the Senate forever ... ... so a) what's the problem with the actual value of Romney's personal wealth ... and b) why didn't this matter months (or maybe 4 years ago? ... and c) Jeeenyus Joe is really rather far behind in terms of personal wealth, particularly when time-in-office is factored in ... why? I think I know why Romney has "so little" money. It is the answer we should be giving. It is in the link in the Posted by: section.
No, seriously. I think this is how we should push back. Ace has a really good line of attack on -why- the question is stupid, but I think turning it around and answering the question in a way the Washington Post would rather us not answer it, is better politics. And ever so much more satisfying. Posted by: Matt S. at October 06, 2012 08:08 PM (7oWbB) Posted by: Mirror-Universe Mitt Romney at October 06, 2012 08:13 PM (boomF) 201

Romney never made Bain go public... When you go public it's all about the bottom line, so like other wallstreet firms it becomes about gambling betting against the US, beting against the American people... What this stupid hack doesn't say is firms like Goldsacks who make billions ,but do they make lasting American companies and invest in growing the American ecomny, no it about the buck...... Romney wasn't looking to make a quick buck, he was and you can see that by what he actiually did invest in to make a profit and make a company that made money for the investors, the shareholders and the workers.

Wow. Driving near Glendale, California, at the junction of freeways 2 and 134, I saw something I couldn’t believe. On someone’s empty land set back from the freeway, there is a giant set of letters sort of like the Hollywood sign. It simply reads “Romney.”
First thing that came to my mind is, will it be 24 hours or less before it is vandalized and torn down. The second thing that came to my mind is, I can’t fucking believe it! I'm printing this. This is a crowning achievement of modern journalism.
It's almost like the writer was studying Ace's prior literature on the media double standard. He/she actually made opposing cases in the last two paragraphs. Even if he/she weren't ignoring Ace's points about the timing of Bain's earnings, this would still be one of the great journalism pieces of our time. The last line is almost overkill, but it puts the piece firmly beyond satire. Posted by: hurtin1 at October 06, 2012 08:41 PM (f5BLY) 214

The power of compound interest, and the vast amounts he gave to charity along the way (starting with his inheritance) would seem to explain this.
Giving away even just ten percent of your income, and then ten percent of all the investment income that comes from your accumulated wealth, over time adds up. Really. Posted by: Clint at October 06, 2012 08:58 PM (IJDTs) 223

Hey NW Conservative your story is pretty much like mine. Democrat always. Daughter (now 32 years old) went door-to-door campaigning for both Gore and Kerry. The whole family was pretty distraught when they lost and we thought the sky was falling. Everything changed for this family when the clown announced he was running. We looked into his background, his history (what little there was) and didn't like what we saw. We started linking to Drudge, once in a while listening to Medved, Hannity and what do you know? Our whole family, including three grown children are all now Republicans. I was born and raised in liberal land Southern California and I would have been ashamed at one time to say that I was a Republican because I thought they were evil. The fact is that I'm in my mid-50s and I want to keep what I worked hard for my whole life. I have a comfortable life and the government already confiscates too much of my paycheck. We need this SCOAMF out of the WH and someone who has good business sense running this country! Romney/Ryan 2012

which he made his fortune (private equity), the era when he made it (the 1980s and 1990s) and the wealth of his peers in that business (mostly billionaires), Romney should be worth a good bit more than that. Why isn’t he?" Romney stepped out of the Private Equity game to: 1. Save the Olympics at SLC. 1999-2002 2. Become the Governor of a state. 2002-2006. 3. Run for President. and he did it all Pro Bono. Willard Romney had to give money to his creepy racist cult of a church, which reduced his personal total. He also had to contribute to right-wing hate groups, and launder money to hide in illegal campaign accounts for when he began his campaigns against our beloved President.
He originally planned to run against Hillary Clinton, which makes him a sexist. Fortunately the distinguished bipartisan statesman John McCain stopped him. But this time, Willard Romney overran the other lunatic racist Republicans, including the Christian Domionist Islamophobe Bachmann, who's even dumber than that slut Sarah Palin. His racism and fearmongering has brought him within one election of the Presidency, which should be the property of our beloved, wise, multiracial President, Barack Obama, who I and everyone I know support completely. "Romney earned his money by manipulating the system."
-- For the most part, that's how everyone earns money. If you do not touch the system, it will not work for you. Simply entering the workforce manipulates the system to some end (namely, you earning money as opposed to someone else earning it.) So, this statement is, on its own, meaningless, except for the connotation it creates. Posted by: Matt S. at October 07, 2012 09:28 AM (7oWbB) 253
