The real number of jobs added last month according to the normal source of that data was 114K. According to the WSJ yesterday it takes between 200K and 250K to break even based on those same real numbers.
It is easy to see from that that Obama's numbers are pure bullshit. Everyone expected the numbers to go to 8.2%, instead they went down. But the real numbers are much worse. The published U-6 number is 14.7% (total unemployed). But that is still from the BLS. I would say the actual total unemployment is probably in the 20% range. That is what one economist has said. Been there, but my oldest, who is 23 now, was only 4. I can't imagine going through that with kids who know. For about ten years after I rejoined the workforce, the first thing I did when I entered our home was listen for the beeping sound on the answering machine of an interview call back. I couldn't help it.
I got laid off again 6 years ago. I saw it coming. The last day with that company was a Friday. The first day of my own company was the next day. I'm still a one-man shop, but profitable. My business turned 6 in August. Posted by: Othered at October 06, 2012 04:58 PM (EuW9O) 114

"If you double 7.8% you're about 3/4 of the way to the real UE rate." My very accurate number is 20.2% based on a number of factors including grocery store current and future stock orders and declining brand choice offerings, durable goods, gasoline, electric and water usage per capita and housing (rent and home equity late payments and defaults) A panic is beginning to set in as retailers are seeing the purchase power of the middle class decline every month. Metals and plastics distributors have seen orders decline over the last year to the point they are on the verge of unprofitability and do not see the demands created during the first two years of the stimulus returning. Not only that, foreign investors are quickly conglomerating the biggest distributors into MetalsUSA. The bullshit that auto sale are coming back is laughable as the majority of GMs sales were to the taxpayer in fleet sales. Now that money is expended and never going to return. I had an interesting conversation with one of my wife's elderly relatives recently. We were talking about the current hard times, and he began recounting his life in the Great Depression, complete with eating squirrels and whatever else they could glean from the land. I in no way mean to diminish the current situation or those undergoing hard times, but poverty back then really meant poverty, as in nothing to eat. For all the complaints here about the entitlement state, and most of them are correct, I'm still glad we have some elements of it.

This ad really hit home for me. My husband hasn't had a paycheck in over two years cuz his business isn't doing more than making his employees payroll. We have been living off my income (which went down this year).
This economy has been brutal on him. He feels humiliated that he isn't making anything for the 50 hours plus he works per week. I assure him that things will get better after the election but if TFG gets reelected I don't think he can mentally keep up the charade. If you're having real problems then I would suggest trying a switch to running your computer on Ubuntu or a similar Linux distribution off of a USB flash. It won't touch anything on your hard drive (though you can access anything you want) and you can see if you like it better for what you want to work with. The whole OS is on the flash so you can take it with you and have your same system on any machine. I switched from hard-drive based OSs to flash OS years ago and would never return. Unless there's something you definitely need Microsoft for this would be my recommendation. And if you don't like it you just pull the flash out and your old system is right there, untouched. So I can't just zorch it and put Ubuntu on it. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 06, 2012 05:36 PM (VJCRJ) But that's exactly my point. If you run the OS off of a USB flash then nothing on your hard drive is touched or changed. NOTHING. If you're interested I'd be happy to help you. The first thing you would do to find out if you "might" like it is to download, say Ubuntu (all free, and I still prefer 10.04), on a bootable disk and boot from that disk. As I said, nothing on your hard drive will be affected but you'll get to see the system and play around a little. You can't do much off of just the boot disk, but that is just to get a feel for things. As I said, nothing on your hard drive will be touched. You will be running the Linux off of the CD or DVD boot disk. If you like it or even want to see hwo to more I'll be happy to help you make a USB flash or run a script to get persistence from the boot CD/DVD. It's all pretty simple, unless you have to go hunting around for it all on your own. Download the free boot disc and check it out. It can't hurt. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 06, 2012 05:43 PM (X3lox) 232
@Anna So I can't just zorch it and put Ubuntu on it.
That's the nice part of running off a thumb drive. You didn't scorch -anything-, and yet you've at least got a clean OS going. You can 'restore' back to the state you were in by pulling the drive. The "elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC" on Amazon (and similar) are small enough that you just don't -care- that you're running off of something other than the internal drive. 280 The only way we will stop the liberals and their welfare/social spending is an Article V convention to tighten up the Constitution and limit the ability of the courts to short-change it. Short of that the only other thing is another civil war.
-------- An Article V convention is a great idea, Vic. But it is a scenario that requires a level of civility and knowledge, that the Left has eroded to the point of being negligible, at this point. That was their plan. If we do have 'another civil war'...it will not be civil. It will be nothing like the one that happened before. And there will be no one to come to our aid, from foreign agressors who might seize the chance to finally overtake us. Posted by: wheatie at October 06, 2012 06:14 PM (l5RhJ) 303

is an Article V convention to tighten up the Constitution and limit the ability of the courts to short-change it. Short of that the only other thing is another civil war. --- Theoretical question here. If we can modify the Constitution through a convention, could we dissolve it, disband the federal government, and reorganize wheichever states actually have enough in common to justify sharing a country? Had a discussion with a low information friend who's convinced she's well informed, but doesn't seem to understand why I'd be offended when she keeps talking about changing the channel whenever Paul Ryan is onscreen because she hates him for his position on abortion. Which seems to her to be the only issue of the election. I'm really doubting reasoned discourse is ever going to work. Posted by: Methos at October 06, 2012 06:18 PM (6LvlL) 317

Fuck the trolls we win. Gallup can hold its likely voter polls down as much as they want with the other pollsters till the "debate bounce" is done. Unfortunately for them, Biden debating is full of lose for them and their other candidate hasn't taken hard questions ever. This debate bounce will last to the election.

"From FoxxCon and the telemarketers of the Sham Wow, comes the BamaFone! Just use your EBT to buy this phone and the US government will use Chinese Yuan to pay your bills. Operators are standing by to take your order. What comes on the BamaFone you ask? Its molded in glossy black plastic with gold accents. It has one ring-tone that starts with 'Let me be clear' and has one wall-paper of Barack Obama. You can surf the Internet with it using the Obama Search Engine, each use can be charged to your EBT and will help pay for Barack Obama to take golfing lessons. And if you order within the next 24 hours we will throw in a MichelleFone for free! Just pay shipping and handling. This gem comes in a swirly collage of pinks, mauve, and purples. The ring-tone plays 'I am so proud of you for using my phone.' The wallpaper shows Michelle in her garden. The Obama Search Engine works on this phone as well. And there is a recipe book for 100 Arugula Dishes." Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 06, 2012 06:40 PM (VJCRJ) 394

Jas I am so sorry to hear that but you are in good company. I lost my
job 2 years ago as of Sept. Its brutal out there. I actually felt the same way about the ad ... close to home. Posted by: Long Island at October 06, 2012 06:20 PM (kzp9t) Thanks, but, fortunately, I'm back working full time, and loving every single minute of it. When the worst part of my job is having to be up between 4:30 and 5 AM, I consider myself damn lucky to be be where I am. Fortunately for my wife and I, she was fully employed the whole time, and I was able to make use of my underemployment by finally getting my degree 25 years after leaving college, ( not that it actually helped me getting my current employment.) It is such a fantastic feeling being productive again. I think God every night for my good fortune. Yeah, two years of underemployment killed the 401k I had accumulated, but, we were able to keep our house and pay our bills. I feel as though I lost two years of my life, and as a male reaching his late forties, I was beginning to wonder if I was getting to old for the job market. Part of the problem with the night group is that it's become carryover from the political discussions at a point where everyone is burned out of them. What we need are two threads, one an overnight political thread and the other an overnight open thread. At least until after the election.

Iwon't go into it right now but I remember sitting at the table saying nothing because the wolf wasn't just at the door he was sitting at the damn table and at any minute something really bad and irreversible could be said or happen. Being a kid and knowing that your family is about to explode and that your dad can't take care of everything is devastating. Anybody who lived through that will feel a little sick when they see this ad. It needs to be played on TV at prime time every night.
