| Overnight Open Thread![]() But over the last three years, the tide has turned. We broke the Taliban’s momentum. We’ve built strong Afghan Security Forces. We devastated al Qaeda’s leadership, taking out over 20 of their top 30 leaders. And one year ago, from a base here in Afghanistan, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal that I set – to defeat al Qaeda, and deny it a chance to rebuild – is within reach. This was only 5 months ago. Let's see how it looks right now. The Taliban has NOT been broken. They destroyed 6 USMC jets in their attack on Camp Bastion Which Was Our Worst Air Loss Since Vietnam. And what of those "strong" Afghan Security forces? Why they're only killing Coalition Troops instead of the Taliban. And the goal of defeating al Queda and denying it a chance to rebuild? Total Failure. The murder of Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans in Libya on September 11 has created a growing political backlash in the United States, but there are three other reasons that this attack is significant. First, an al Qaeda unit successfully assaulted American soil for the first time since 9/11. Second, we were -- once again -- caught by surprise, and third, the attacks show that al Qaeda is not just alive and kicking (as I mentioned in my previous post), but that our current strategy for dealing with the group is failing. What's sad is that journalists have dug deeper on stories like the Haditha Massacre, troops peeing on dead bodies, etc. than they have regarding al Queda's resurgance and murder of an American ambassador. Of course, this might have something to do with it. Intelligence Officials Angered By Obama Administration Coverup Of Intelligence. The president said during his nomination acceptance speech that “al Qaeda is on the path to defeat,” an assertion contradicted by the group’s rise in the region. The administration, in particular, wants to keep hidden solid intelligence showing that the terrorist group behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans is now flourishing under the Muslim Brotherhood regime of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. @ 79: his idea of what actually happens with health care is probably about as sophisticated as that! When Obama gave his crazy line about doctors "amputating feet for money," we in the medical profession were all wondering if this guy could possibly be any more stupid and uninformed. A patient with gangrene, vascular disease, limb ischemia is a complex disaster of a patient. No doc cheerful takes that case "to ampute feet just for lots of money." You end up working like the dickens to try to save as much of the limb as possible, taking care of the patient's dozens of other medical problems which usually also include uncontrolled diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension and renal insufficiency at a minimum - in short what medicare pays you doesn't cover a fraction of the work you do. For our president to be such a dimwit and to insult the medical profession so blithely - for criminy's sake! From that comment on, I knew that TFG was completely ignorant - just making sh*t up and being allowed a pass by a completely incompetent media. Posted by: Interested Party at October 06, 2012 10:52 PM (RE+1w) Funny how the media keeps putting VA in the Dem camp, but the ads that Obama and Kaine are running are not the ads that the frontrunner runs. Kaine is running one ad saying that he will work with whoever is President, doesn't sound like he thinks Obama will win Virginia. Now Kaine is running an ad trying to "triangulate" raising taxes. Instead of Obama's plan on 250K, he wants 500K as the point to raise taxes. Doesn't sound like someone who thinks Obama's plan is working in Virginia. This is the kind of campaigns Dems ran in Virginia in the 70's, 80's and 90's to distance themselves from the Dem national party. Posted by: MrCaniac at October 06, 2012 11:06 PM (Zd/NW) 204

Anyone know about shotguns? I was on here last week with questions about them and thought I knew what I needed for home defence (Rem 870). I figured out later that they don't make a left-handed version. My whole life I've been plagued with being lefty in a righty world. Are there regular lefty shotguns avalible (Benelli shotguns are lefty but around $1,700). Thanks. Posted by: Watson at October 06, 2012 11:20 PM (hsUCI) Stoeger makes a bottom-eject version. @317 Bad trolls go to troll limbo when they die-- a place where there are no "con" websites for them to jack off to and no computers. It's a gray kind of noplace but does vaguely resemble their parent's basement in some aspects. There are some faded Obama HOPE posters on the wall to mock them mercilessly-- sort of like that welcoming sign in Dante's Inferno--"abandon all hope, ye who enter here."

With the short barrel, the Ithaca makes a fine grouse gun>>
It was a gift from my older brother when I was 16 for grouse hunting so yes I may have unrealistic love for that gun. But it also is the one that I hit the most clays with. The thing about guns is they are very personal. I know guys that swear by one that don't work well for me. Anyone that is adverse to just collecting tools cause the collecting is fun should find a range (or for shotguns a clay club) where you can shoot many and find the one that feels the best. "Sheriff" John Rovick, the beloved Los Angeles children's TV show host whose gentle, fatherly persona made him a welcome guest in homes throughout the 1950s and '60s, died Saturday morning. He was 93. "Cartoon Time" with Sheriff John became an immediate hit with young viewers, earning an Emmy Award in 1953 for outstanding children's program. KTTV by then had added a new show to its schedule at midday, "Sheriff John's Lunch Brigade," which stayed on the air until 1970. One highlight of the show, whose primary target was 4- and 5-year-olds, was Sheriff John's reading of the names of dozens of viewers who were celebrating birthdays. Then he'd sing "The Birthday Cake Polka" — "Put another candle on my birthday cake. We're gonna bake a birthday cake ..." — as a large cake revolved on a lazy Susan. Sheriff John also had lunch along with his viewers — he'd usually eat a sandwich and have a glass of milk after saying a brief nondenominational prayer. "It was a real good little prayer," he recalled in 2008 in The Times, the words still fresh in his mind: "Heavenly father, great and good. We thank thee for our daily food. Bless us even as we pray. Guide and keep us through this day." LATimes RIP -- and you're sure not going to see any prayer, non-denominational or not -- on good old lefty Sesame Street. Can Japanese sex and porn get any weirder? I know they're doing it with robots now. I bet that's why they're so obsessed with robot technology. *********** You know what really "disturbs" me? Some thirty-forty years ago, the Japanese billed themselves to the world as cultured, refined people, pointing to the tea ceremony, concepts such as "wabisabi", geisha, Zen gardens, Noh, Kabuki, and all that. Westerners used to live there to soak up some of that culture. Today? The Japanese government poured millions of tons of concrete all over the country in a vain "stimulus" after the Crash in the early 1990's, and as for "culture", it's weirdness and degradation all the way down. NDE is near death experience. I've had a couple and I'm young so I thank Him every day. One when I was 10, had a chevy pickup hit the front passenger side tire of the car I was in. I was in the passenger seat, another foot closer to the door and I'd probably be dead. Another when I was 14, my cousin and I liked to train hop when we were at my grandparents house. We jumped on a train we thought was stopping, started going faster. We both jumped off and all we had was some scrapes and scratches.

Speaking of the Japanese, whenever I watch sci-fi I'm always perplexed by the fact that other planets are portrayed as having only one monolithic culture, unlikeEarth with our varied cultures and languages and ethnicities. Why are there no regional differences on Vulcan, for instance? Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever. Posted by: Buzzsaw at October 07, 2012 12:50 AM (L4ZuH) 426

Posted by: 18-1 at October 07, 2012 01:19 AM (AUeaU) On the contrary, multiculturalism and creating a single dominating culture go hand in hand. Multiculturalism is used to denigrate each civilization by saying they are all equal. The only way they can be equal is if they are equally valueless. The left then swoops in and slowly weaves together a single narrative and the cultures mutate into one. It is the basic M.O. of the left, from the Jacobins, to the NAZIs, to the Communists, to the modern Progressive Left: Destroy the current society so that it can be replaced with their delusional utopia. The way they destroy it, and the way the replace it varies, but the basic plan is the same. Posted by: The Political Hat at October 07, 2012 01:43 AM (sZTYJ) 501

Pottstown’s ‘Big Bird’: Romney didn’t ruffle his feathers
POTTSTOWN — Remarkably, it seems the aspect of Wednesday night’s presidential debate that the nation has latched onto has less to do with taxes, the deficit or health care policy and more to do with a threat to fire a giant yellow bird that lives on an imaginary street. And while reaction to Gov. Mitt Romney’s promise to cut taxpayer funding for PBS and “fire Big Bird” has ranged from the incredulous to the hilarious, few know how the big guy himself feels about it getting the ax from a Romney administration. So we decided to ask him — well one of him anyway. Longtime Pottstown residents will recall that Lionel Douglass, Pottstown High School Class of 1973, spent five years inside the Big Bird suit both on the PBS television set and on stage as part of a road show. Early morning on March 13, 2011 (28 hours or so before the Reactor 3 building exploded). TEPCO's workers had figured out that by rigging up the car batteries they could provide just enough power to operate the main steam safety-relief valve (SR valve) to release pressure inside the Reactor 3 Pressure Vessel. Ten 12-volt batteries were all they needed for that operation for the moment, they figured. The problem was that they didn't have 10. They asked the workers with cars to please remove the batteries so that they could be used.
20 car batteries were offered. But they needed more. Much more, in order to monitor the conditions of Reactor 3 and Reactor 2. The monitoring systems in the central control room were also down, because of lack of electricity. They needed the batteries in the order of 50, 100. Iwaki City was 30 kilometers south of the plant, and there were big auto parts stores in the city. So, TEPCO workers decided to drive down there and buy car batteries at the store. But 8 car batteries were all they managed to buy in Iwaki City. Asahi Shinbun article doesn't say whether it was lack of money or lack of inventory at the auto parts stores. It was not that TEPCO's Headquarters in Tokyo had sat paralyzed. It had already ordered 1,000 batteries from Toshiba on March 12 and arranged for having them shipped to the plant immediately. There was a problem. A government permit was needed, apparently, to transport that many batteries on the highway, and the permit was not readily coming. The vehicle loaded with 1,000 batteries couldn't leave Tokyo unless the issue of the permit was resolved somehow. In the end, 320 of 1,000 batteries did arrive at the plant, in the evening of March 14, long after the Reactor 3 explosion. The core inside the Reactor 2 Pressure Vessel had already been exposed. Jewish leaders expressed outrage Friday over the State Department’s praise for, and defense of, a controversial Muslim leader who has defended terrorist groups and suggested that Israel may have been responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Salam al-Marayati, founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), was picked to represent the United States government at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) annual 10-day human rights conference, the Human Dimension Implementation Meetings (HDIM). Al-Marayati’s well-known anti-Israel bona fides prompted Jewish leaders and others to express outrage over the Obama administration’s selection. “It is regrettable that someone with such distorted, conspiratorial views—even with a lackluster apology—is delegated by our government to represent our country abroad,” the Anti-Defamation League said in a statement to the Free Beacon. Posted by: Watson at October 06, 2012 11:20 PM (hsUCI) ---------------- Savage sells cheap pump guns (below $300) under the Stevens label. I believe they eject empty shells downward, which makes them OK for left-handed shooters. For what it's worth, I looked at a some reviews and owner comments. They said the gun is Chinese made, comes with a heavy layer of factory grease inside which should be cleaned out for proper function, and also reported rough finish and burrs on internal parts which might be worth smoothing with a file. Also that reassembly can be difficult until the proper trick is worked out through experience. Steve Haugen, an economist at the BLS, provided CBS News with a partial, but plausible, explanation for the improbably positive household survey results. He noted that people in the 20-24 age group, including college students and those who often work temporary jobs, left the job market this summer in August, earlier than usual, confounding the expectation of the BLS that they would leave in September. Since the BLS does seasonal adjustments of its data, a big decline in employment in this demographic was factored into the bureau’s calculations for September. “Because there was no decline,” Haugen said, “there’s a big increase after seasonal adjustment.” In other words, perhaps hundreds of thousands of nonexistent temporary jobs were reported to exist. The Obama administration may also be taking other measures to improve the official jobs data in the run-up to the election. It has added 10,000 civilian workers to the federal payroll just in the last three months. I call BS on this story. Posted by: Buzzsaw at October 07, 2012 02:47 AM (L4ZuH) The nuke plants use 125 VDC and 250 VDC systems for the Safety relief valves and steam driven pumps. Unfortunately all the batteries and the distribution panels are put on the lowest level of the control or reactor building. (Seismic/earthquake proofing the system - these batteries weigh a lot, 100-400 lbs/cell and 120 cells for each 250 VDC battery.) The tsunami flooded the lower levels of the buildings. They needed to hook up batteries in the control panels above these flooded areas. A set of 10 car batteries would be able to operate the SRVs for about a half a day to a day, maybe. A set of 20 would run the steam driven pumps for about a half a day. maybe. But that would have been an extra half a day. By then, they should be able to jury rig the next things, like the big generators. (one was within a half hour of powering up, when the first unit blew up (U2?) and severed the cables from it to one of the units (U1?). IMO A big problem was they were running the show from Tokoyo and TEPCO and the Government were not responding quickly. Posted by: rd at October 07, 2012 04:21 AM (9sUlj) That and because Carter engineered the idiotic return of the Sinai at Camp David. Of course, Israel bears some responsibility, too, for still failing to understand arabs and arab culture. Land won in war with arabs can NEVER be given back to them. Never, ever, ever. The only way to get arabs to stop attacking is to take shit from them and let them know that with each new attack they'll lose more shit. Land is a big thing and keeping that is of utmost importance, even if the winner doesn't want to keep it. It must be kept to establish the victory to the arabs and to thwart future plans they might have for another attack. Giving it back only insures future attacks. Still, it's pathetically funny how Egypt can consider the near total loss of their entire 3rd army (and the Suez Canal ... once again) as a victory. They are truly out of their minds and Westerners need to recognize this sad fact. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 07, 2012 04:34 AM (X3lox) 570

http://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/scarce/why-obama-now I could only make it through a minute of it. It's total shit. So many lies that I could spend two pages explaining just what's wrong and stupid about the first minute. The middle class never invented anything. Geniuses invent things. The middle class benefits from their inventions. Henry Ford created an industry, not the workers he paid - as the cartoon stupidly tries to use as an example of ... something. The Bush tax cuts increased government receipts by leaps and bounds. Congress just increased their spending to cover it all and then some. Tax cuts and supply side theory didn't cause the crash. Barky and his idiot supporters did with their government perversion of debt, intentionally forcing the mispricing of debt in order to subsidize sub-sub-prime loans (as no one ever got prime loans - the prime rate was the rate of loans for AAA businesses) and hide the cost of it. This ended up having the debt mispricing arbed throughout the debt market (the largest and most important market there is) and that eventually came crashing down, taking everything else with it. I could go on and on and on but that's enough. And I didn't even address another bunch of idiocies from the first minute. I dread the thought of having to listen to the rest of it. It's plain stupid and a pack of lies. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 07, 2012 06:38 AM (X3lox) 585

Government "investments" in research led to the waste of billions of dollars in bullshit global warming crap and the cost of TRILLIONS of dollars in injury to our economy (and those around the world) from the rancid returns of "global warming research". The only government spending that ever effectively yields workable products is defense spending and that's the first thing that idiot leftists want to cut to shit. Government spending on education has served to pervert our public system and make it worse now than it's been in decades along with driving the price of universty tuition through the friggin roof (and textbooks, too, which are at a level well above highway robbery). I meant feral govenment spending, here, obviously - not local. The feral government has no business mucking around in public schools (elementary/secondary) throughout the nation. If the feral government had been under Barky around the turn of the 20th century, they would have mandated DC electricity (as a tax, no doubt) as the standard and the US would look like a fifth world shithole with an electrical generating station on every city block and most of the US not even having access to electricity.

Do you know any real commies? They're great. Best way to figure out what dems and unions and whatnot are all about, is to hang with them until their guard drops and they open up. It's a hell of an eye opener. Painful, but quick. Posted by: otho at October 07, 2012 07:03 AM (yBF/9) 595
Get the morning thread started already.

Good morning ladies. It's a rainy day in VA, but I don't mind. Maybe I can fire up the wood stove later.

Pretty rainy here in NC too. What a coinkydink.
Posted by: JDTAY at October 07, 2012 07:19 AM (a0nis) 598
But is it a rainy day in Georgia?

what's the temperature like around Va/Nc?

No rain in E. MA. A bit on the cool side but nice so far.
I'm guessing Choom Boy is still asleep. Posted by: MrScribbler at October 07, 2012 07:26 AM (ZgX/g) 601
After 6 weeks of high 90s to 100 weather, fall hit a couple of days ago. It's going to hit mid 70s mid afternoon. But it feels so cold now. What amazed me when it was hot, was that the temp would go up 5 to 10 degrees and hour in the am. But now it is normal fall weather and I'm still complaining. It's my right.

Sort of a good feeling to wake up and realize we are another day closer to Election Day.
And Gerg is still a knob gobbling, penis breath loin licker who does Hobos for a nickle a pop. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 07, 2012 07:37 AM (m6L2f) 605
So we're here this morning, stuck in an old thread that smells of Gerg sweat?
Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 07, 2012 07:37 AM (dX4hn) 606
That's not sweat.

I should not be forced to share a thread with he-who-must-not-be-named. I demand a pure, clean morning thread, ASAP.

then I wouldn't have to get on the treadmill
Posted by: kelley in virginia at October 07, 2012 06:05 AM (HNwOT) Running a couple of miles around the neighborhood is much better than running a couple of miles on a treadmill. Burns more calories. Plus better scenery. Unless you live in the ghetto. But every Moron of good standing is eager to go all Death Wish in that case. If you're looking to burn off some of that cheesecake the elleptical machine is also a pretty good compromise between the two. Good evening again.
Internet is working again. Too late for me, though. So...good night, ONT! Good morning, Vic! Posted by: Robert at October 07, 2012 07:41 AM (4ixH5) 611
We should see Romney ahead by 3 in this morning's Rasmussen. Friday was a huge Romney day in his poll, and Saturday is unlikely to match it. However the last pre-debate result will drop off and the Saturday poll will likely be Even or R+1, dropping an O+2 out of the average.
Gerg will be along about 5 minutes later to tell us that the debate bounce is now over and forgotten, and that now all anyone is thinking about is the Friday jobs number. Posted by: Dave in Fla at October 07, 2012 07:41 AM (dX4hn) 612
It is a right.
Posted by: sTevo at October 07, 2012 07:41 AM (VMcEw) I think we should organize a popular revolution and seize the means of blogging from the greedy Ace and his cobs and establish a new community. A sort of of...bloggunist community. Henceforth we shall speak as one in a more democratic fashion. Naturally, I appoint myself leader of this new vanguard. So, while we all sit here waiting for the morning thread to appear, and pick belly button lint to kill time......
Went to go see Tim Burton's Frankenweinee in 3D yesterday. Strange,. Very Strange. But funny in it's own right. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at October 07, 2012 07:44 AM (m6L2f) 614
